Episode 1 - Breakfast Skillet for Vegans

INGREDIENTS:

1 package of Gardein Home Style Beefless tips
1 package of Simply Potatoes Hash Browns
2 handfuls of of vegan cheese
a few tablespoons of vegetable oil
1 block of extra firm tofu
onion powder
garlic powder
salt
2 spoons of tahini
1 spoon of soy sauce or tamari
1 spoon dijon mustard
big dash of of tumeric
vegan barbecue sauce (no worcestershire)

DIRECTIONS:

1. In a well-oiled (spray it) 12 inch non stick skillet, line the bottom with Simply Potatoes. Sprinkle with onion, salt, and garlic powder. Press so its even. Cook 6 to 7 minutes to be lightly browned. Set the timer. You’re drunk.

2. While this is cooking, crumble the tofu with your hands, so that there are still some visible pieces, but it’s broken up quite thoroughly. Lay on a paper towel. And whisk together your tahini, tamari, mustard, and turmeric mixture.

3. Take the potato skillet out, drizzle more oil. Turn the potatoes over with spatula in sections. Sprinkle with cheese. Continue cooking 6-8 minutes.

4. Oil 2 pans and put on medium heat. Add the tofu to one pan, along with the tahini mixture. Mix the ingredients together thoroughly and cook till the tofu is warmed through, about 4 minutes or so.

4. While you’re stirring this pan, stay close to the other pan and warm up the Beefless tips. Simply pour out the beef nuggets and watch them not burn.

6. Take out your skillet and top with “eggs” and crown it with your “ribs”. Lather with BBQ sauce and you’re good to eat.

Are you a vegan, Charles?

We had a student who was a vegan who went with us to conferences in large midwestern cities. When we all went out to eat, it was incredibly difficult to find someplace she could find something to eat.

Also, where I live, a number of the ingredients above would cost twice as much as normal because it’s “organic” or whatever. Nothing against it, just an observation from the times I’ve used vegetarian “beef” and the like.

Looks interesting to this carnivore. Breakfast is a good meal for experimentation (for us anyways). We have 1 day a week where we eat no meat for dinner for about a year now. Although I was resistant at first we have discussed expanding on it.

I take it the fermented anchovy in the Worcestershire sauce disqualifies it as vegan, correct?

I have been going vegetarian for Lent for the past several years. Not strictly or religiously (fell off the wagon last night because we had a gig at a gourmet restaurant and had to try the venison steaks) but in general a six-week break from meat, especially processed meats, is a good thing for my system.

My wife is a vegetarian who eats eggs and cheese.

No fish, though, due to allergies.

I’ll never forget the day we went to a restaurant, and my wife ordered a veggie-burger - and the waitress asked her if she wanted bacon on it.

Yay to the government of, by, and for the people!
Big bills to view public documents discourage public access

“It’s incredibly easy for an agency that doesn’t want certain records to be exposed to impose fees in the hopes that the requester is dissuaded,” said Adam Marshall, a fellow with the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, which sponsors Sunshine Week with the American Society of News Editors. “If the people don’t know what’s going on, either because they don’t have direct access to information or because the media isn’t able to provide them with access to information about what their government is doing, it’s impossible for the people to exercise any sense of informed self-governance.”

Fees can be charged for searching for records, making copies, paying a lawyer to redact certain parts of the information or hiring technical experts to analyze the data.

In most cases, the fees imposed are at the agency’s discretion; those agencies sometimes waive the costs or requesters can appeal them to an administrative board. But in other cases, Marshall said news organizations and private citizens are faced with the “ridiculous choice” of weighing the costs and benefits of being a responsible public steward.

In Florida, the Broward Sheriff’s Office told Jason Parsley, executive editor of the South Florida Gay News, last year that it would cost $399,000 and take four years to provide every email for a one-year period that contained certain derogatory words for gays. The reason, according to officials: The email system could not perform a keyword search of all accounts at once.

There are a number of other examples in the lengthy article.

During the state police inquiry on Francis, the youngest of the girls, then 3 years old, told investigators that Marsha and Justin Harris had both spanked her.

Marsha Harris, according to the girl, used some sort of whip several times, while Justin Harris bent her over outside and hit her with a stick, court records said.

CCJ retweeted this:

Enstrom is a corrupt ex Tobacco scientist who was publishing total bullshit on undermining diesel emission regulations.

For almost thirty years, Enstrom’s research into smoking and health was funded by the cigarette makers.

In fact, Enstrom did so much work for Big Tobacco that when the United States Department of Justice summed up its civil RICO case against the cigarette makers [PDF] at the end of a months-long trial in a lengthy legal filing, Enstrom got his own chapter — one of just three scientists singled out by DOJ out of many dozens of tobacco-funded researchers for having been vital to the industry’s efforts to sow confusion about the health effects of smoking.

U.S. District Court Judge Gladys Kessler apparently agreed on Enstrom’s role, singling out his work for extensive treatment in a scathing 1652-page final opinion in 2006 [PDF] in which she ruled that the tobacco companies were indeed a “racketeer influenced and corrupt organization” under the RICO law, a decision upheld by the Supreme Court.

In a section entitled “Defendants and Their Paid Consultants Controlled ETS Research Findings,” Kessler zeroed in on a 2003 study published in the British Medical Journal by Enstrom and co-author Geoffrey Kabat claiming that links between secondhand smoke, or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and lung cancer or coronary heart disease “may be considerably weaker than generally believed.”

Charles,
a question for the blog software. I know there’s an LGF pages bookmarklet. Would there be a way to create a similar bookmarklet for pasting a link into a comment? Right now, I have to copy the headline, then the URL. It would be great to click a bookmarklet and have it appear in the comment field immediately, or copy both the link and the headline into the clipboard.

I don’t think it a vindication, either. UCLA most likely settled when they couldn’t get the case dismissed for risk management reasons. Going to a jury, even when the science is on your side, is rather risky. Thus the great majority of cases that are not dismissed end in some form of settlement rather than a trial.

I was an ovo-lacto vegetarian for years, but gradually added turkey, chicken and fish to my menu as I aged. When you’re getting older and losing muscle, you necessarily need more protein since your metabolism slows down and most of us become more sedentary. I could never keep up the exercise regimen I adhered to in my 40s when I weighed less than 110 lbs.

And poor people have been eating meatless dinners for years—mac and cheese, beans and rice, etc, w/a veggie or potatoes, etc. Sometimes it’s totally necessary, not because it’s a diet you want to follow with little protein and a lot of carbs.

Heh, I used to have a friend from Hong Kong who told me that the Chinese say “if you can see its back, you can eat it.” When I lived in New York one of my favorite pastimes was to go into ethnic markets and gape at all the exotic, strange seeming food.

The big Chinese supermarkets were the best—all sorts of fruit, veggies, and (often unidentifiable) smoked/dried meats & seafood I’d never seen before. Many of the packages had labels only in Chinese, so it was a challenge to figure out what some of the canned & packaged food was.

There were two things I could never get used to where Asian food is concerned: Seaweed in any form *gag* and popsicles made from sweetened red beans. I’m sure I had the mother of all “WTF?” expressions on my face the first time I was offered one. Beans + sugar frozen in a stick? Um, NO.

And seaweed? Gah, I had a Korean friend that would munch on dried sheets of that horror. It smells like a dirty fish tank. *shudder*

Here’s one thing I don’t understand—if all of those conversations with the little girls were in the reports when the state police were investigating Francis (spring of 2014), how did Harris keep his role as adoptive father and “re-homer” out of the media reports at the time?

What Harris did not publicly disclose last spring, however, is how Francis came into contact with the 6-year-old victim. In prosecutor documents recently obtained by the Arkansas Times, state police investigators and multiple witnesses concur that the child was in fact the legally adopted daughter of Justin and Marsha Harris.

arktimes.com

Who was covering for him at the time to keep that info out of any public info reports? And, as somebody had already asked, why was Harris not on the potential witness list on the Francis case before Francis accepted the plea bargain?

There’s a whole lot more to this story which the Arkansas Times seems bound and determined to uncover—good for them!

As long as I can’t smell it, I’m good. Back in TX I wouldn’t even swim in freshwater lakes because they have that awful algae smell. Yyyyuck. And water moccasins.

Also, when I was around 13-years-old I went swimming in a river up in the hill country and came out with tiny black leeches all over me. Yeah, that was the last time I swam in a river.

57 Justanotherhuman  Mar 14, 2015 1:12:00pm

That’s a lot of ingredients for a glommed up breakfast. Yeah, yeah, I know it’s satire. : )

How about a couple of nice scrambled eggs and an English muffin or toast? Even w/a little jam or marmalade spread thinly, it’s less than 500 calories, heck, even w/a tsp of butter to cook the eggs in.

Besides, can you imagine that a hungover vegan would eat anything in less than 24 hrs? They’d probably be too damned sick.

Besides, eating moderately the way I do now makes me feel a whole lot better than trying to adhere to some crappy diet, including the macrobiotic one I experimented with for a couple of months in the early 80s—felt so tired all the time that I could barely get through the day.

Some of my first design work was for a group of guys from Ohio State University’s Food Sciences.

That’s where I first learned of the sameness of injected molded plastics and many foods.

I was fascinated by the ‘long egg’ process that oozed out 18” long boiled-egg-shaped tubes so when sliced and in your industrial salad it look just like sliced egg.

Well, accept if you look in your salad…all the egg slices are exactly the same. Real egg slices…not so much.

And then I did the brochures for the Chicken processing machines. I think they were designed by French torture device inventors except they were now in stainless steel and nylon for cleanliness.

In his first swing through the early primary state of New Hampshire since 2012, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker took a tough line Saturday against Islamic terrorism, laying out the possibility he would deploy troops to the Middle East if he were president.

“We need a commander in chief in this country who stands up once and for all and says our biggest threat is radical Islamic terrorism and we will do whatever it takes to weed that out anywhere in the world,” Walker told a group of GOP activists at Concord High School.

“We need a president who will do whatever it takes, whatever it takes. Who understands we have an ally in Israel and we should start acting like it. Who understands that radical Islamic terrorism is like a virus and if you don’t take it out entirely, it’s like a virus in your computer that will keep coming back.

“And I don’t know about all of you, but I’d rather take the fight to them than wait till it comes to us on American soil.”

When I was 12 I lived in a small town (700 people) that didn’t have a swimming pool, but was surrounded by dugouts full of water. Two friends went into the nearest and came out covered in leaches.

We peeled them off and they went back in.

I never went in, I’m too chicken.

Scott Walker is not very bright. Then again, the entire conservative movement is full of superstitious dim bulbs.

I would be scared. He is a dangerous ideologue.

Speaking of dim bulbs:

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry drew inspiration from one of the nation’s founding fathers during a speech at a recent fundraising dinner for the Republican Party of Virginia.

“Thomas Paine wrote that ‘the duty of a patriot is to protect his country from his government,’” Perry said, drawing applause from the crowd during his Feb. 24 event at the Richmond Marriott.

[…]

But many quotes have been mistakenly attributed to Paine, and the association also notes on its website what its hero did not write. Among them is a virtually identical phrase the former Texas governor attributed to Paine: “The duty of a patriot is to protect his country from its government.”

Gary Berton, secretary of the association, told us, “I’ve read every word of Paine’s several times. It’s definitely not Paine.”

Berton, who has studied Paine’s writings for decades, said the phrase doesn’t even sound like a thought the founding father would convey. Paine was certainly critical of Britiain’s rule of the colonies and hoped society would one day become so advanced that it wouldn’t need government, Berton said.

“But in the meantime, he was for a strong central government with redistribution of wealth,” added Berton, who is also the coordinator of the Institute of Thomas Paine Studies at Iona College in New Rochelle.

Once, I stepped on a sand shark at Black’s Beach in San Diego. Scared the shit out of me.

We used to go to the coast at least once a year, sometimes more. The ocean doesn’t bother me nearly as much as fresh water, but then I’ve never stepped on a shark. I guess it bothers me less because for the most part you can’t see what’s in there with you.

The only time the ocean gt really icky back in TX was when 1.) thick black oil like tar would wash up on the beach, 2.) you got there during a weird time when there was tons of seaweed floating in the water (which I just now learned is called Sargassum), and 3.) when there were jellyfish infestations—the big white blobby “moon” ones were mostly just gross, but when there were swarms of Portuguese man o’ war it was too dangerous to go swimming.

When I was in high school, instead of going to the nearest beach we’d sometimes drive the extra hour to get to San Onofre.

The nuclear power plant there cools the reactor core with circulating sea water; the ocean nearby is a good 10 degrees warmer than the whole rest of the Pacific. Surfers especially loved it ‘cause you don’t need a wetsuit and there aren’t any fish.

3. At least 8 years on - off in prison system for 5+ DWI, causing car accidents without a license etc.
4. Neglected to provide for his son, which the taxpayers took up.
5. His son now is a heroin addicted criminal, causing further harm to the community.
6. At our meeting, he wanted to sell me his food stamps.

This motherfucker has cost the taxpayers millions of fucking dollars because of his arrogant stupidity and he has the nerve to complain about “others”. I hope he got the drift, I laid it out very clearly for him.

A Google For Scientific Articles, For The Next Time You're Locked In A Debate About Vaccines
Could be promising.

Sparrho is like the Google for scientific papers—and patents, posters, events, and grants. Just type in keywords, like “GMO food,” and you’ll soon have access to all the latest research. Here’s a snapshot of what comes up when you search for GMO food:

As you can see, the latest results are up-to-date (I performed the search on March 6). Some are accessible to laypeople, some are not. That’s because Vivian Chan, Sparrho’s CEO and co-founder, originally designed the platform for herself. “I was doing my PhD at Cambridge University, and realized using search engines for science doesn’t work. There are all of these databases out there, but you have to know exactly what it is you’re looking for,” she says.

Yeah, I know anti-vaxxers won’t be dissuaded by “facts” and shit, but still.

Good afternoon Lizards from rainy Philadelphia.

Got home from vacation after a delayed flight from Charlotte. Cats and plants are alive, and the former are actually acting like they are happy to see me return.

Weather cooperated much better than we hoped. We didn’t hit any rain until yesterday afternoon while returning to Wilmington.

Savannah, Pensacola, and Mobile were all very interesting. And we spent some beach time as well on three different days (Tybee Island, Santa Rosa Island, and near Fort Morgan.)

Geology over the last two days was less than hoped for. No permission to go onto one site, rivers were up and hiding their limited exposures, and there are just not many good exposures to look at in the coastal plains. We did stop and look at a active kaolin mine (clay pit), so I got a few interesting pictures from that.

The history side was visiting Fort Pulaski (near Savannah), USS Alabama in Mobile, National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, seeing the outside of Fort Gaines, Fort Morgan, and Fort Barrancus, and a NPS-run site for a Revolutionary War battle at Moores Creek National Battlefield.

About 350 pictures taken, so I get to now sit down and edit and sort for a while.

Set 5 years before SW:ANH, it’s actually much better than I expected, ok, the art’s bit strange at times due to the Ralph McQuarrie influences & vertical exaggeration they like, but that’s a different gig. The stories though have been quite good with things that happened earlier in the season impacting things later in the season & in the season finale.

No spoilers but I found the season finale that I watched with my son to be far more interesting than the over the top zombies and other “drama” so popular on TV these days. I can’t wait to see how they handle what they set up in that last episode.

They’ll wait a few years and allow Congress to pass/remove laws making them record that information. Once that dries up there will be no easy statistics to gather and it will just be “he said/he said” with Fox News winning.

Dakota Meyer was recently seen with Sarah Palin at a convention holding up a sign blasting filmmaker Michael Moore for his comments regarding the controversial film American Sniper.

The sign, held up by the smiling Meyer and Palin, read “Fuc- you, Michael Moore” with gun-sights drawn in the o’s of Moore’s name.

Even MoH winners can be complete whackjobs or co-opted by those who are.

I think one would be better off if they got a tip from Suze Orman about how to save money than CCJ.

Indeed. Anybody who thinks Charles Murray writes books about how to staff a business is way off base, and that’s actually not a slam against Murray. Someone writing about social trends and social policy is not who you go to for business advice.

Note: I don’t agree with The Bell Curve either, but somehow UpChuck managed to beclown himself in a way I didn’t think even he would do.

Note to Self: Never bet against the stupidity of Charles C. Johnson.

Dakota Meyer has his own long list of growing up in dysfunctional family baggage to deal with, along with PTSD and other mental/emotional conditions.
Perhaps the Palin family looks more normal to him than what he dealt with growing up.

Well, tonight is the first Saturday night I haven’t had to work since June, it’s sunny & 60 degrees, a local band (Molly & the Danger Band) is playing up the road and I’ve actually got a few pennies to spare. Will wonders never cease?

Later Lizards.

re: #138 Justanotherhuman

Well, we would just have to go back to the class action suits, then. That taught many companies they couldn’t get away with such crap when the statistics proved those cases. I worked on some of those back in the early 70s, compiling statistics and they were always devastating to the company’s line of “We don’t discriminate”.

The thing is you can actually make an honest argument for not incorporating affirmative action in hiring, always hiring the most qualified applicants and then have a company that reflects the institutional racism of society. You don’t need to incorporate “The Bell Curve” to do this, and it can be done without any racial animus or intentional discrimination. I’d still say that this is problematic because it perpetuates the inequality in starting conditions, and ignores a company’s interests in reflecting the community it is located in and serves, but one could also still argue that it’s at least honestly rooted in one view of a company’s best interests and is nominal meritocratic. To do this there is no reason whatsoever to incorporate any of Murray’s work, The Bell Curve is actually antithetical to such an effort.

What CCJ is proposing is just plain inefficient, and based in a system of racial hierarchy and (despite his weak denials) superiority. It appeals to him because he’s a gross, slithering little racist piece of shit.

Sitting here watching Formula E racing on my TV. It’s basically Formula 1 (same governing body, in fact, and a lot of the same teams) but with all electric cars.

Pretty neat. I actually hope it catches on more, just because the work and research these teams do into things like battery life and power management could then be applied to regular consumer vehicles down the line.

Conservatives on Facebook are trying mightily to wash the stink of the Iran letter off today. Pelosi did this, John Kerry did that…

I’ve pointed out to two of them so far that one person acting alone out of conscience (in Kerry’s case) is nowhere near the equivalent of nearly the entire Republican side of the Senate undermining foreign policy in an official capacity.

They’re so desperate to come up with an equivalent act for Cotton and the GOP’s stupidity. It’s amusing to watch. I’ve got the added bonus of posting the latest Jim Wright rant and watching them go into seizures of rage.

The Daily Mail, apparently.

And late last year that same newspaper ran an article that Bristol Palin had filed for child support from the father of her son Tripp, Levi Johnston. The article claimed Bristol filing said she had no real source of income. Selling this story and the upcoming magazine interviews, rights to the wedding photos, the stories if she gets pregnant (which I’m betting she will)… that equals income.

Palin fans will eat it up and it takes the focus away from her mother’s EPIC FAIL in Iowa.

This could be part of that, actually. Marrying Bristol Palin would gain Meyer access to her mother’s constituency.

Okay, so a question for the Lizardem who are servants of pets:

I just returned from the store to buy cat and puppy food so the cats wouldn’t kill me in my sleep.

I have Amazon Prime. And as I was lugging in the bags of food, I was wondering if it would be less expensive to order from Amazon and have it shipped (assuming it was free shipping)? (along with cat litter).

Does anyone do that?

Also, recommendations for a good dog brush. I have a furminator for the cats, but Murphy’s hair seems too thin for it, and he doesn’t really seem to like it.

Thanks.

Didn’t read his book and can’t find anything beyond an anecdote about a tractor online. Do you know about it from his book or from being in Kentucky? (Don’t mean to pry—just curious—and figure it must be pretty bad if, with all of his other problems, he wants to join that circus of a family.)

I live in Cook County, I work in Chicago, my parents live there, and I’m pulling for Emanuel. Not because I like the man, but because I don’t think Garcia is up to the job. I don’t think he’s got the connections and alliances needed to run Chicago, and he would be far less likely to be on good terms with Governor Rauner. Chicago’s mayor and Illinois’s governor have clashed before, and while both officers have won at least one of those clashes, the state of Illinois has always lost in some way.

re: #180 Dark_Falcon

Why am I not surprised that a GOP team player would be pulling for the neoliberal candidate in the run-off?

Rauner has a lot bigger problems than the mayor of Chicago (not that the mayor isn’t a major player), like figuring out how he’s going to pay the pensions to state employees that were promised to them, and getting anything past super-majorities in the lege.

His budget was a JOKE.

I know about it from being in Kentucky. It all came out in the Kentucky news when he won the MoH.
And, yes, it was really bad for him growing up.

We have a case (24 cans) of cat food shipped to the house each month, because Amazon’s price kicks the crap out of what the place where I buy my dog food charges.

Can’t recommend a dog brush. We have three different ones and our dog hates all of them.
