Saturday Noir: Bob Schneider, “Chinatown”

A long-lost Tom Waits song?

There’s a cold wind blowin’ down the ninety nine
And the ghosts of New York City they all doin’ just fine
When that little Smith and Wesson went and lit up the night
All she showed when she heard were them cold pearly whites

None of them kisses dropped down in the hole
While the midnight sun played the starring role
Was gonna turn around that black Cadillac
Filled with little white rails, just the cold hard facts

So when you done dancing and the rain slows down
We’ll all meet up at Eddy’s o’er in Chinatown

Think you got the answers but you got it all wrong
The days too short and the nights are way too long
Wake up to find your whole world falling apart
In a fifty dollar dress over a broken heart

Dig in the dirt while you’re dancing with the dogs
Rollin’ around lost in a fog
Bangin’ on tomorrow like a big black drum
Kick your head back and spit at the sun

So when you done dancing and the rain slows down
We’ll all meet up at Eddy’s o’er in Chinatown
We’ll all meet up at Eddy’s o’er in Chinatown

There’s fifty on the table there’s trouble down the line
There’s 200,000 dollars nobody’s ever gonna find
You know you’ll never see her come walking through the door
And the bars about to close and the sky’s about to pour

You take your last slug and stumble out into the street
You pull out your gun and you whisper trick or treat
And as you pull the trigger beyond a shadow of a doubt
You hear her sayin’ the name and the lights go out

So when you get done dancing and the rain slows down
We’ll all meet up at Eddy’s o’er in Chinatown
We’ll all meet up at Eddy’s o’er in Chinatown
We’ll all meet up at Eddy’s o’er in Chinatown

Okay, so a question for the Lizardem who are servants of pets:

I just returned from the store to buy cat and puppy food so the cats wouldn’t kill me in my sleep.

I have Amazon Prime. And as I was lugging in the bags of food, I was wondering if it would be less expensive to order from Amazon and have it shipped (assuming it was free shipping)? (along with cat litter).

Does anyone do that?

Also, recommendations for a good dog brush. I have a furminator for the cats, but Murphy’s hair seems too thin for it, and he doesn’t really seem to like it.

Thanks.

Charles,

have you ever heard of either Jeffrey Foucault or Peter Mulvey?

Might give them a listen. Mulvey, especially, is into alternate tunings and has an interesting style. Foucault has a great plains sound that’s haunting.

I don’t get our pet food there, but I do get my protein bars (Quest Bars). With Prime it is cheaper than anywhere I can buy locally. So I wouldn’t be surprised.

If you have prime anyway, have it shipped but in bulk. Amazon’s got a warehouse somewhere near you, and if they don’t stock that they will job it out to someone local who do…

Got to see him in N.C. in a club with about 20 people there. We sat on a couch (!) right in front of the stage!

I’ve ordered canned food for my cats via Petco online when they’ve had a really good price, but I don’t ever do it in the winter because I don’t have control over what kind of temps the food is going to be exposed to in transit (or how long it’s going to sit on my front porch before I get home from work).

We’ve got the only two cats in the world who don’t like tuna. Won’t eat tuna flavored food, won’t eat their food when we put tuna juice on it (which was always nirvana for every other cat)—but they will lick tuna juice off the dog’s food when we put it on there. Psycho felines!

How to Buy a Cubic Yard of Mushroom Compost for the Garden:

1. Make several calls to suppliers. Pick the one with fewest cops enroute.
2. Fill an airtank from the compressor. Take the tank to the flat trailer tire.
3. Fill tire—It holds!!! Spare doesn’t.
4. Drag the trailer from the back to the driveway.
5. Blow out the pine debris with the residual compressor tank.
6. Look through the garage for the new trailer lights. No go.
7. Find the old lights you took off last fall, and a forgotten wiring harness.
8. Check the van’s wiring output harness with tester. No go.
9. Remove van taillight module. Looks good.
10. Free and unwind van harness assembly. Find shredded part.
11. Cut, splice, rewrap harness.
12. Test. Yay!!!
13. Prefab new/old trailer light wiring. Test. Yay!!!
14. Secure and weather tighten.
15. Bolt lights back onto trailer.
16. Gather tarps and binders to secure compost.
17. Garden shop closes compost sales until Monday.
18. Open first Guinness of Craic Week.

NYPD edited Wikipedia entries of Eric Garner and two unarmed men who were shot by cops

The Garner entry seems to have been edited the most, with numerous changes made on the page.

‘Garner raised both his arms in the air’ was edited to say ‘Garner flailed his arms about as he spoke’ and ‘Use of the chokehold has been prohibited’ became ‘Use of the chokehold is legal, but has been prohibited.’

A sentence was also added to say that Garner was bigger than the officers on the scene.

As for Bell, who was shot dead on November 25, 2006 by undercover officers at his bachelor party the night before his wedding despite being unarmed, his entry was not only edited but there was also an attempt to have it removed completely.

On the Articles for deletion page, someone from the department wrote, ‘He [Bell] was in the news for about two months, and now no one except Al Sharpton cares anymore. The police shoot people every day, and times with a lot more than 50 bullets. This incident is more news than notable.’

The entry was not removed.

I’d say I’m surprised, but I’m not. This kind of dishonest Wikipedia editing is way too common and I’m glad it was exposed in this instance.

Keep notes of local prices then compare. Sometimes it’s not so good a deal. Sometimes it is. Like I just bought a 90 pack of Finish dishwasher tabs for 9 bux. Cheaper than anywhere else. With TP, I’ve experienced it’s basically a wash, so I order from Amazon.

From the article:

So what use have all those digits been put to? Statistical tests have suggested that not only are they random, but that any string of them occurs just as often as any other of the same length. This implies that, if you coded this article, or any other, as a numerical string, you could find it somewhere in the decimal expansion of pi. Of course, that’s relatively meaningless, since you don’t know where to find the material you want. An apt metaphor for an age when we are being asphyxiated by mushrooming clouds of information.

Evangelist Franklin Graham: Obama’s Mom “Must Have Been a Muslim”

On the Family Research Council’s Washington Watch radio show, evangelist Franklin Graham said Obama hasn’t been aggressive against ISIS because his mom was a Muslim. Graham clearly has no idea what he’s talking about.

From Right Wing Watch:

One of the problems we have [is that Obama’s] father was a Muslim, and his step-father was a Muslim. [He] lived in Indonesia and went to Muslim schools. His mother must have been a Muslim — we don’t know that, but she married two Muslim men, so there must have been something there. And the framework that the president has growing up, his influences in his life was that of Islam.

This makes me happy. (h/t Balloon Juice)

Conservatives are happier than liberals, or so decades of surveys that ask about life satisfaction would suggest.

The existence of a so-called ideological happiness gap is so well established that recently social scientists have mostly tried to explain it.

But a new series of studies questions the gap itself, raising the possibility that although conservatives may report greater happiness than liberals, they are no more likely to act in ways that indicate that they really are happier…

…”What our evidence suggests is that it’s limited to self-reports of subjective well-being,” Professor Ditto said. The article appears in the March 13 issue of the journal Science.

In fact, when behaviors rather than self-reports were examined, liberals seemed to have a small but statistically significant happiness edge.

Conservatives may say they’re happy, but they’re seething under the surface. And they blame you.

Yes, Nyet. Josh Muravchik was the chairman of the YPSL (Young People’s Socialist League) in the early 70s. He was a hard core disciple of Max Shactman. Shactman was one of the founders of the Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party, but eventually, Shachtman wound up in the New York Liberal Party.

I was involved in YPSL during the same time, I broke with them over their obsession with attacking Eugene McCarthy and George McGovern.

They’re more happy because their only happiness is derived from Cleek’s Law: Today’s conservatism is the opposite of what liberals want today, updated daily.

And they do everything they can to push our buttons, because that’s the kind of assholes they are, and that makes them happy.

On the fly, there’s a few things.

Tracking facial muscles. Real smiles and “fake” smiles are different.

Another possibility would be tracking physio data to ascertain genuine emotional state. For example, in-saliva cortisol (stress=anger/fear). galvanic skin respons (fear). heart rate. etc.

I loved Tim Roth in that show, it was the whole premise of the show itself that was a bit much. I mean, for him to 100% know who’s lying and who isn’t just by looking at them for a split second? Seems a bit far fetched.

Putin has made a lot of shady thug Russians a lot of money and recently they have lost an awful lot of it due to his blunders. Putin is a tough thug but he isn’t the only one in that country, he’s not in a good place.

But more seriously, when “Peskov says that Putin is going to watch a film about Crimea tonight” is among top news, something is wrong, and if Putin is indeed alright, how is that anything but trolling?

I found the premise far-fetched, but I enjoyed his acting.

I also liked “Dead Like Me” (also on NF streaming), because Mandy Patinkin was in it, but the premise wouldn’t hold up after a couple seasons.

Finland and Sweden are mulling co-operation in the field of defense, Sweden’s military has gotten a serious funding boost and is to shift more towards defense of the homeland.

As to the sense in Sweden, it’s hard to tell, but I know the Finns are concerned, as they been invaded once and fought two wars against the Soviet Union.

Not to mention that if Dugins Foundations of Geopolitics is to believed, Finland might be a target for Russian expansionism.

And no need to apologize, I am one of the 5% of the people living in Sweden who are Finnish Citizens. It confuses the heck out of many people.

It improved things between the two nations slightly, but the underlying problem for Russia remains: North Korea is a nuclear armed and irrational state that threatens a US ally. And if the Norks ever use those nukes on America or its allies, a (relatively) small but notable part of Russia will be irradiated by the fallout from the nukes that will obliterate North Korea in retaliation.
