Tom Cotton Tries to Sabotage Obama’s Iran Deal, Then Calls for Massive Defense Spending

Not a coincidence
Politics • Views: 32,131

Sen. Tom Cotton, fresh from his disturbing attempt to subvert President Obama’s negotiations with Iran, took to the Senate floor today and advocated immense defense spending increases.

The Republican Party really, really wants another war, because they know they and their corporate masters will be the ones to reap the profits from it, and they could not care less if it drives the country into even deeper debt and recession. The American public be damned.

And of course, Cotton invoked Hitler.

While Obama has proposed raising spending on defense to $534 billion and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Jack Reed (D-R.I.) advocated a budget of $577 billion, Cotton said the U.S. needs north of $611 billion to manage a world he said had “grown gravely darker” since Obama took office.

Beginning his speech by quoting Winston Churchill’s remarks from 1933, Cotton drew parallels between the current world order and Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in Germany: “[W]e alone are growing weaker while every other nation is growing stronger.”

Considering what Cotton wants to do with Iranians, I think he is the other side of the coin from Churchill.

But remember, we can’t afford to pay for healthcare, better schools, or infrastructure, plus we need to cut taxes on the rich to spur “job creation”.

Agreed.
Been reading some arms control sites view of the agreement. Long paper short, the thing about the deal, the overarching benefit is simply a lack of war. past that, it’s better than no deal, brings inspectors to Iran and puts them in a position to abandon weapons in the face of a far more beneficial option. Nuclear for electricity and medical isotopes. Inspections to ensure safety. And an end to sanctions so the nation can prosper without the damn things. (Nukes)

Increasing the DoD’s budget does not mean going to war. It means equipping and training our forces so that they’ll be even better than now, but that does not mean we have to have a war.

hahahahaaaaa!

But when those soldiers go to war, because you don’t have a problem with a nuclear Iran if it pokes the Obama administration in the eye, they can just shut up and fade away when/if they come home and just be grateful for “thanks for your service”.

One last thing, then I need to go. I mentioned this on the previous thread, but its worth saying again: Tom Cotton did serve in the US Army in both Iraq and Afghanistan, winning the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Bronze Star.

51 lostlakehiker  Mar 16, 2015 6:40:43pm

There’s another way to look at it. The first key fact is that iran is actually pursuing a nuclear capability. This has to be understood. They aren’t building ballistic missiles to carry dynamite.

They don’t want nuclear energy; it’s more expensive to them than natural-gas fired electricity would be.

They don’t need a whole arsenal worth of enriched uranium for medical isotopes.

Now, is the deal under discussion going to have any other result, down the road, than a nuclear-armed Iran? What’s going to happen that will sway them from their course, under that deal? Inspections may slow it down, I suppose.

Churchill made the point that the choice at Munich had not been between war and peace, but between war at better odds and war at worse odds.

Here, the choice needn’t be between war sooner and war later, because it could be that sanctions would sway the regime and convince it to stand down its nuclear arsenal ambitions. But not if we give away the store.

If I wanted to adopt the same rhetorical style that seems to be the fashion, I could say that the Democrats don’t just want war, they want nuclear war.

Because that’s one possibility if they’ve miscalculated.

But I know better than to fling such a hateful and unfounded accusation. They think their deal will work. Are you sure?

I’m going to vent here, briefly.
My youngest step-son gave more than 20 years of his life serving this country, retiring as a TSgt with the USAF.
He is 100% disabled as a result of his service.
It’s fortunate for him that he was stationed at Wright-Patterson when he retired and still lives in that immediate area, so has access to the medical facilities there.
However, the facility is overloaded and sometimes he is sent to a civilian hospital to deal with his chronic condition.
The civilian hospitals are also overwhelmed.
For veterans who came home to non-urban areas, access to VA care is even more dreadful.

Sorry for shouting, but:
THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED.

And I do NOT want to hear about how the GOP can flippantly talk about going to war AGAIN, but health care for our veterans AND American citizens as well are too costly.

re: #51 lostlakehiker

Here, the choice needn’t be between war sooner and war later, because it could be that sanctions would sway the regime and convince it to stand down its nuclear arsenal ambitions. But not if we give away the store.

Clue: It’s NOT just the US in talks with Iran. How can sanctions work if Iran reaches a deal with the other countries and they remove their sanctions?

If I wanted to adopt the same rhetorical style that seems to be the fashion, I could say that the Democrats don’t just want war, they want nuclear war.

Because that’s one possibility if they’ve miscalculated.

But I know better than to fling such a hateful and unfounded accusation. They think their deal will work. Are you sure?

You don’t have the first clue what the agreement being worked entails, yet are certain the deal, being worked by NOT just the US, but by P5+1, can’t possibly result in a non-nuclear armed Iran.

The P5+1 is a group of six world powers[1] which in 2006 joined the diplomatic efforts with Iran with regard to its nuclear program.[2] The term refers to the P5 or five permanent members of the UN Security Council, namely United Kingdom, United States, Russia, China, and France, plus Germany. P5+1 is often referred to as the E3+3 (or E3/EU+3) by European countries.[3] Wikipedia

Without their help, how do you plan to accomplish anything but a war?

Are you proud of both your ignorance and your arrogance?

I haven’t read many of Stephen King’s more recent novels, because the last several I did read seemed to follow a pattern where the first 2/3 of the story are really engrossing and then suddenly he whips out the dumbest third act imaginable. It’s terribly frustrating.

I nearly always find his short-story collections to be worth several re-reads, however.

It’s a decent movie but really? I can’t think of anything made since then that hits those notes at the same level.

Umberto Eco put it best:

When all the archetypes burst in shamelessly, we reach Homeric depths. Two clichés make us laugh. A hundred clichés move us. For we sense dimly that the clichés are talking among themselves, and celebrating a reunion

Shawshank is only a three or four cliche movie on this scale…

re: #74 Backwoods_Sleuth

I have a customer who spent 20 years in the Navy and has a 10% disability and he has to get on the van at midnight to get an exam for new glasses.

If I may be permitted the conceit of commenting on my own post.

To the extent that there is criticism of the post in the comments, it is exclusively focused on the racial bias section. I find this to be an interesting phenomenon. Thus, among people who bothered to read the post, they can believe that the Ferguson PD was an inexcusable revenue generation machine, that it habitually used excessive force, that it punished people regularly for contempt of cop, that it systematically violated its citizens civil liberties. All of this is believable. But not, apparently, that justice was also administered in a racially biased (which is different from racist) way.

That’s an awful lot of dedication to the proposition that people you don’t know couldn’t possibly be racially biased. And that’s all I further intend to say on this matter.

Sorry, I’m not a big deadhead by any stretch of the imagination but, really, the Dead died on August 9, 1995.

Nor am I a deadhead, but I agree. Saw the Dead in concert while Jerry was still with them, they played for almost 3 hours, with an intermission. First half sucked and I wondered what the fuss was about. After the intermission, they said they’d been having sound problems which were fixed. Second half was great. I think a much better band live than on record. But with Garcia gone? Not sure.

re: #84 A Cranky One

Clue: It’s NOT just the US in talks with Iran. How can sanctions work if Iran reaches a deal with the other countries and they remove their sanctions?

Is it arrogance to doubt that the proposed arrangement will work? Or is it arrogance to be so sure it will?

The broad outlines of the proposed deal are emerging. None of us is entirely ignorant.

You seem to think that Russia is opposed to Iran’s becoming a nuclear power. Why?

And then there’s North Korea. Which right now is already a nuclear power, after decades of the US saying that that would be unacceptable. What does “unacceptable” mean, then? That we are not delighted by the result. It doesn’t even mean that we will not prop up their economy.

I expect that Iran will have a nuclear arsenal within 15 years. Why can they not replicate the steps North Korea took? Your side will get its way, and who knows where it will lead? I hope, and more than half expect, that Iran will be cautious. But I don’t know that it will. Look how they talk, after all. And Saudi Arabia will probably follow suit, as will Egypt, (Saudi Arabia won’t have to invent anything; they can buy stuff) and the Middle East isn’t known for being so much different from the Balkans when it comes to being a breeding ground of wars.

You say I want war. I don’t. Nobody does, really. [OK, except for Putin, who is even now waging one in Ukraine, one he started, and for ISIS, and for Boko Haram, and if we reach back into history, Saddam, and the Argentine colonels, and who-all. That’s the snag. Trotsky was right on one point.]

But the rest of us don’t want war. People get killed, and in much bigger numbers sometimes than what our own recent wars have come to. So that’s a good reason to want to avoid war. But say you assume, wrongly, that all I care about is business. Well, war is bad for business. It brings inflation, and higher taxes, and shortages, and it strips skilled manpower out of the workforce and wastes years of their time on the war, and some of them come back disabled or in caskets, which is again bad for business because they were our best, on the whole, and skilled labor is critical to the economy.

If I’m wrong and this all blows over peacefully, I’ll have to say that Obama will have earned the Nobel Peace Prize that was voted him without his having yet achieved anything much for peace at the time of the award.

Just jumping right in here, so apologies if this has been posted, but

The Rude Pundit has Tom Cotton’s number.

When Schieffer asked a perfectly logical, oughta-be-easy question, about what his big plans are if no deal is made with Iran, Cotton didn’t even try to address it. “Well, as Prime Minister Netanyahu said, the alternative to a bad deal is a better deal,” he said. What is that “better deal”? Fuck you. That’s the better deal. And we should listen to Israel’s leader instead of ours? Okay, man, but you better shut your Ozark meth whore mouth if a Democrat ever says, “Well, as Sweden’s Prime Minister said” when a Republican is president.

“Obama’s [12] Wars”?

OK, Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya I get - and Syria a “maybe”… BUT: “Egypt”? WTF is the “war” there ? And the African countries: “Uganda”, “Somalia”, “C.A.R”? What do we have by way of actual military assets there outside of some various advisory groups? Yeah, “advisory” assistance can get out of hand sometimes, *cough*Vietnam”cough*, but do these knobs really think whatever we are doing in, say, The Congo, amounts to a “war”? And “Iran”?
- if anything, they are coming in on “our side” in Iraq: not to mention the nuclear talks designed to (hopefully) prevent a war.

That’s the basic problem with wingnut memes: complete bullshit, usually, but they sound convincing, and rarely-if-ever get challenged.

re: #170 lostlakehiker

The Norks have fired off several failed tests using most of what reasonable (aka sane and non-conservative) sources claim to have been their plutonium stash.

In addition you fail to remember that President Clinton negotiated a deal that would have ENDED the Nork nuclear threat that was abrogated by the Cheney^h^h^h^h^h^hBush Administration early in their regime’s tenure. Much like the 47 traitors would do to what Obama is trying to do for the good of the world rather than the good of the military industrial complex.

181 palomino  Mar 16, 2015 8:30:31pm

re: #9 Dark_Falcon

Increasing the DoD’s budget does not mean going to war. It means equipping and training our forces so that they’ll be even better than now, but that does not mean we have to have a war.

Here’s Cotton’s claim: “”[W]e alone are growing weaker while every other nation is growing stronger.”

OK, explain how we’re growing weaker when we already spend 10 times more than any other nation on defense. And what the hell does Cotton know, after being in the Senate for 2 months, that Obama and even war loving McCain don’t already know?

Basically, you just want to spend money because the military gets you excited. You don’t even have a reason (such as needing to fight a war). It’s always the nebulous “we need to be prepared” which is an essentially meaningless Boy Scout slogan.

And aren’t you the guy who says you can live with a nuclear Iran? (Maybe because it will make Obama look bad?) How do we deal militarily with Iran AFTER they have a nuke?

You seem so hell bent on a partisan news cycle victory that you’ve lost any ability for logical strategic thinking. I’m afraid you now have extreme ODS and are of little use as the resident “moderate responsible” conservative.

This. When we are purchasing planes, tanks and the like and immediately mothballing them, what benefit is there? How does that help the military or the taxpayers. This is corporate welfare on a massive scale.

One of the biggest modern mistakes of modern economics is that defence spending is a capital investment. It’s not. It’s one of the purest forms of consumer spending as most of that money goes into things that are meant to be destroyed. Every time a bomb goes off or jet fuel is burned or ammunition expended that money that went to that is lost.

As John Ralston Saul puts it, “Armaments are a political necessity but an economic negative.”

The major characters and some of the basic plot were all that made it into the movie, but the rest was pure 80s popcorn action flick.

That said, the supporting cast was much more interesting; Richard Dawson chewed up the screen as cold, calculating game show host Damon Killian and Yaphet Kotto did a pretty good turn as one of Arnie’s “partners-in-crime” (and member of the resistance). On top of that, Mick Fleetwood and Dweezil Zappa did fairly well in their roles as other members of the resistance (Fleetwood as the leader and Zappa as one of his lieutenants).

And what can be said about Maria Conchita Alonso? Back then, she was definitely F-I-N-E; hell, last I looked, she’s still looking pretty good.

re: #51 lostlakehiker

Here, the choice needn’t be between war sooner and war later, because it could be that sanctions would sway the regime and convince it to stand down its nuclear arsenal ambitions. But not if we give away the store.

Over the last decade, we’ve done the exact opposite of giving away the store. Ten years of very harsh sanctions “succeeded” in lowering Iran’s number of centrifuges from 164 to 19,000. Oh wait, that sounds like a failure.

We can’t ratchet up sanctions much, they’re already at 11. So what are these other magical sanctions you refer to? And don’t count on the countries that Iran trades with to impose or continue sanctions. Russia, China, India, much of Europe—these nations are unlikely to extend sanctions longer or make them more severe.

All of which leaves us back where we started: with no monitors or inspectors, but lots of sanctions. Over the last 10 years that strategy led to 100 times as many Iranian centrifuges. Why the hell would anyone think it would succeed going forward?

How about we try monitors and inspectors for a while? At any point, we can always cancel the deal and re-impose the right’s beloved tough talk and (relatively worthless) sanctions.

Exactly, they sound just like all the neocons in 2002, who at first claimed they didn’t really want war with Iraq.

Then they freaked out about nonexistent nukes (sound familiar?) and wanted war so badly they thumped their chests for the first 3 years of the Iraq War, until realizing the whole misadventure was an ill-advised POS.

Most importantly, neither df nor llh seems to have any non-military solution to the situation. Thus, by default, they support an eventual war, as the status quo isn’t sustainable in perpetuity.

Iran has withstood decades of full US sanctions, so that’s worthless. And no other major economic power has shown a willingness to engage in long-term sanctions like we have.

In my learning of John Brown in primary school, I was taught that he was a madman, a blood-thirsty radical like ISIS today, or something.

He may well have been those things, and he and his sons killed a lot of people who didn’t deserve to die. He was more than that, though. John Brown was executed on 2 Dec. 1859. 16 months later the worst thing that ever happened to the United States started at Ft. Sumter, South Carolina. John Brown lit a fuse, whether he knew it or not.

Is it arrogance to doubt that the proposed arrangement will work? Or is it arrogance to be so sure it will?

Show me please where I said that the arrangement was sure to work. Otherwise, take your strawman elsewhere. Sanctions haven’t done the job, time to try something different. Some people try to learn from experience you know.

The broad outlines of the proposed deal are emerging. None of us is entirely ignorant.
You seem to think that Russia is opposed to Iran’s becoming a nuclear power. Why?

You seem to think that Russia wouldn’t mind if Iran became a nuclear power. Why? It’s not like they are part of the negotiations to prevent that, right?

And then there’s North Korea. Which right now is already a nuclear power, after decades of the US saying that that would be unacceptable. What does “unacceptable” mean, then? That we are not delighted by the result. It doesn’t even mean that we will not prop up their economy.

Under whose watch did North Korea become a nuclear power? Hint: not Obama

I expect that Iran will have a nuclear arsenal within 15 years. Why can they not replicate the steps North Korea took? Your side will get its way, and who knows where it will lead?

You mean the side that thinks that delaying their program is better than nothing? What have you got that will prevent them from doing so otherwise? Put up or shut up. Delaying their program is the first step in dealing with the issue, who knows what the future will bring?

But the rest of us don’t want war. People get killed, and in much bigger numbers sometimes than what our own recent wars have come to. So that’s a good reason to want to avoid war. But say you assume, wrongly, that all I care about is business. Well, war is bad for business. It brings inflation, and higher taxes, and shortages, and it strips skilled manpower out of the workforce and wastes years of their time on the war, and some of them come back disabled or in caskets, which is again bad for business because they were our best, on the whole, and skilled labor is critical to the economy.
d.

Are you truly that naive? Wars are bad for business? Do you have the first clue how much money was made in this country because of the last few wars? Wars cause inflation and higher taxes? Remember George W., who LOWERED taxes during two wars and passed the deficit on to Obama? Are you really that oblivious? You think businesses don’t want war because it takes skilled workers out of the economy? Tell that to all the unemployed veterans. Tell it to me, after my highly skilled job of 23 years got outsourced.

And you still haven’t even acknowledged that the negotiations include all the members of the security council, or provided any path to your goal without their help and support.

You want a solution that you think will guarantee Iran will never get nuclear weapons and claim not to want war but offer nothing but failed policies.

The military-industrial complex would like nothing better than another war. And if you think they care about the human cost then you are just an idiot.

Scott Walker’s budget forcing school districts to trim further

Wisconsin school districts are scrambling to revise their budget estimates after Gov. Scott Walker’s biennial state budget proposed effectively cutting $127 million in education aid next year.

Milwaukee Public Schools is facing a loss of at least $12 million next year as a result of that move, but plenty of well-to-do suburban districts — in areas that are overwhelmingly supportive of the governor politically — are acknowledging gaping budget holes, as well.

The aid removal “definitely compounds the already massive fiscal challenges that Cedarburg and most other districts are already facing for next year,” Cedarburg Superintendent Jonathan Lamberson said. The Ozaukee County district would lose about $430,000 next year if the proposal passes.

The state budget is in the hands of the Legislature’s powerful Joint Finance Committee, and members will be in Milwaukee on Friday to hold a public hearing at Alverno College, starting at 9 a.m. Education advocates and school officials are likely to turn out in large numbers.

Factory owner tax cuts cost $275 million more — twice original projections

A measure tucked into Gov. Walker’s 2011 budget that effectively eliminated state income taxes on owners of factories and farms in Wisconsin is costing way more than predicted and contributing mightily to the current budget shortfalls.

The Manufacturing and Agriculture Tax Credit was hailed at the time as a job-creating effort that would let businesses invest the savings in new hires and equipment.

But recent figures from the Legislative Fiscal Bureau show the credit will cost the state at least $275 million in additional lost tax collections over the next biennium, or more than double what was originally estimated.

That’s roughly the amount of the proposed $300 million cut to the UW System.

They leave his body to rot for almost 5 hours. Botch evidence. Lie. And present a shitty case to the grand jury. And Mr. Wilson is making money of killing a human being with a big fat smile on his face.

Sorry I missed most of the evening, but here’s what happened.

I drove down to Charleston for a party for this guy I know, but don’t even like. In fact, I know he’s a drunk and a cheat, and, at various times, have vowed to expose him to his wife and others, but, hey, I figured it was worth the trip for the food and conversation.

So anyway, I drive down there, kind of guessing where the party was going to be—don’t know why I didn’t look at the invitation, which was in my purse the whole time, but eventually I got to the house, and guess what? The party was YESTERDAY and it wasn’t in Charleston after all—it was about 5 minutes from my house. And technically, I wasn’t even invited.

So I turned around and came home and laughed—oh how I laughed, at how stupid it was to drive all the way to Charleston with the party invitation right there in my purse, and to never even glance at the invitation to see where, when and what the party was all about.

This fictional account of my evening has been brought to you by “upchuck is full of shit.” In fact, I ate a hamburger, watched Love It or List It and read a book. (but the pickles were divine.)

Apparently the guy made a run at the cockpit, per witness accounts. I don’t blame the outlets that do actual journalism for waiting on additional confirmation, however, which is the right decision.

It always surprises me that people think Buddhism, or any religion, is naturally peaceful. Religions are not significantly different from each other in cultural effects, or rather, any religion will interact with the other parts of the culture. So you can have Christianity of a totally pacifistic kind, like the Quakers and Mennonites, and you can have Christianity of the “Fuck your nation, you’re our slaves if you’re not dead” kind. And you can have Buddhism of the simple wooden bowl and enlightenment kind, or of the “Killing people doesn’t really matter in the great wheel of life” kind.

Religion is not separate from culture. It’s just another part of it, no different from any other aspect.

True story: At university, my independent work was on Cervantes and Don Quijote. I read the book (there were 2 volumes, printed 10 years apart) at least three times — in Spanish, and wrote about how Cervantes and the book influenced European lit. I am very fond of Sr. Cervantes, so I hope his grave gets an appropriate marker.

More true facts: The first book was so popular that several hack writers tried to cash in on its popularity by writing sequels. Cervantes was so disgusted that he wrote the second volume and deliberately had Don Q and Sancho mock the hack sequels in the second novel.

If we boil it down to a catchphrase, Buddhism is what Buddhists do, Islam is what Muslims do and so on. What one does changes with time, from group to group etc. quite independently from the wishes of the originators. Joseph Smith likely wouldn’t have approved of today’s LDS church, the Jews of 500 BCE would have a great trouble recognizing today’s Jews as Jews and Jesus, if he existed, would be pissed off by 99.99% of all Christians in history. It doesn’t diminish the “authenticity” of all these groups in the slightest.

One last thing, then I need to go. I mentioned this on the previous thread, but its worth saying again: Tom Cotton did serve in the US Army in both Iraq and Afghanistan, winning the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Bronze Star.

So whatever else he may be, Tom Cotton is not a chickenhawk.

I read that wikipedia entry and thought about it. I’m going to do some research later.

Why? Because of this little aphorism from Bill Mauldin. “The surest way to become a pacifist is to join the infantry.”

All the soldiers I’ve known and the large majority of those I’ve read about that have been at the sharp end don’t want war. They know what it’s like. They know it’s a horror. They don’t want war.

Sen. Cotton acts more like a member of the 101st Chairborne than the 101st Airborne.

Unfortunately, as a species, we have to have the bad thing happen to us over and over and over before we start to think, “Maybe we shouldn’t do that?”

I think, on some level, that you also have people who return from the clusterfuck that is the middle east with the mindset of “Win? What win? We withdrew, gave up, threw in the towel. Look at it? We need to finish it and rid the world of all Muslims. Now.”

And that, IMHO, is Tom Cotton.

I didn’t see the film or read the book but wasn’t the American Sniper mindset that it was good to kill all those people? I thought that was what I heard. I think Cotton has that very mindset.

House Republican Budget Overhauls Medicare and Repeals the Health Law

nytimes.com

WASHINGTON — House Republicans on Tuesday unveiled a proposed budget for 2016 that partly privatizes Medicare, turns Medicaid into block grants to the states, repeals the Affordable Care Act and reaches balance in 10 years, challenging Republicans in Congress to make good on their promises to deeply cut federal spending.

“The House proposal leans heavily on the policy prescriptions that Representative Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin outlined when he was budget chairman.

“With the Senate now also in Republican hands, this year’s proposal is more politically salient than in years past, especially for Republican senators facing re-election in Democratic or swing states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Illinois and New Hampshire, and for potential Republican presidential candidates.” More

At some point she returned to Palestine for an arranged marriage with Zedushka’s grandfather, but the rest of her family stayed in Ireland.

Well the idea was that it would offend white people to see a lone Black valedictorian. And really, their kids didn’t measure up to her.

That’s racism, pure and simple.

I was just being facetious, but whenever people complain about affirmative action as “reverse racism”, you should cite the example of Loretta Lynch.

The problem with certifiable is that many people believe what they see on tv. Especially older people who grew up with Walter Cronkite and later Peter Jennings…you know, real news people…at a period where lying on a news cast would have been a major scandal.

Now it’s…Meh.

Some of these folks are not certifiable. They are being lied to and eating up the lies.

They literally believe that Fox is “the news.” Of course they’ve been driven insane, and the people who did the driving should be held responsible, but we don’t seem to have any laws against fake-news designed to exploit the elderly and other people who don’t have the skills to see through over-the-top propaganda.

428 ObserverArt  Mar 17, 2015 8:46:30am

That bit about chemical storage containers triggers a comment from me about a failing dam at an old local lake constructed a long time ago. Here is some Wiki info on the lake:

Introduction

Buckeye Lake is a reservoir in Fairfield, Licking, and Perry Counties in the U.S. state of Ohio.[1] It was the first large reservoir built in America and became Ohio’s first state park in 1949. Built near the highest point of elevation between the watersheds of the Scioto and Muskingum Rivers, it was constructed to supply water for the Ohio and Erie Canal system. The village of Buckeye Lake grew up on the shores of the lake.

History

As early as the 1750’s, the area that would become Buckeye Lake was described as a great swamp known as “Buffalo Lick”. The main Indian Trails between the Ohio River and the Miami towns passed by this swamp.[2] Construction of a dike to block the South Fork of the Licking River occurred between 1826 and 1830, to provide a source of water for the Ohio and Erie Canal.[3] When filled in 1830, the lake was known as Licking Summit Reservoir. The canal between Lake Erie and the Ohio River was opened in 1833. In May 1894, the canal having fallen mostly out of use, the lake was repurposed for recreation, the area being dedicated as a public park and renamed “Buckeye Lake”. The railroads that had put the canal out of business now brought summer visitors and a town and resort grew up around the lake.

Anyway, the dam is failing and the US Army Corps of Engineers wants it totally drained and/or the dam rebuilt.

Over the past twenty or so years the area has exploded from a sleepy little village miles from the big city of Columbus to an Upper Class community of big houses crowding the shores. All those new people built their new ‘escape from the city’ homes to be a part of new upscale community and now their scenic lake is in trouble and they don’t like it.

Now there are groups opposed to draining the lake and they want alternatives. I guess they have already installed some kind of a big alarm system to let everyone know the damn is going and to get the hell out of there.

The corps is pretty sure the dam is going to go sometime. Their report was the dam failure was imminent. Sounds pretty official and assured. I guess you could joke it is damming.

So, the point. The lake has always been nice, but I remember some rumbling about the dam many years ago back before the community grew up all rich-like. Now that everyone is invested in property they seem to be willing to risk lives to keep the pretty lake instead of doing the right things so that maybe in the future, they get their lake back.

I guess I see this local story like so many larger national/world events. People are willing to ignore warnings of how bad things are getting so they can hold off the pain, costs and problems of taking the real issues on. And at the same time totally willing to go about it all the wrong way so long as they get what they want now even if it all goes to hell and people are killed and whole areas of a little town and maybe even parts of Interstate 70 get taken out and all need rebuilt.

What that hell is wrong with us? Have we totally lost reality in this country.

A dam. Police departments. Healthcare. International negotiations. Just gloss over the issues don’t upset my pretty little view(s)!

And with that…good day. Time to get busy. I’ll be lurking to catch the news on the elections in Israel and whatever else goes on in this wacky world…now with even more wackiness.

The issue isn’t even as basic as understanding the basics of negotiations. The GOP is actively trying to sabotage anything Obama. From before his inauguration, their sole purpose was to make him fail, to wit:

- Their (at the time) defacto leader Limbaugh explicitly saying he wants Obama to fail

- Elected officials meeting and planning how they could make him a one-term president

I won’t bother with others, but you not only get the picture but have been studying it along with the rest of us.

You cannot negotiate with someone who is not negotiating in good faith. Period. The GOP does not want to negotiate. They want to bomb. They would never allow a democrat to achieve success in negotiations. As well, the GOP knows nothing about negotiation or compromise to even run our freaking country, let alone keeping another country from getting The Bomb.

6:50 P.M. Netanyahu slams election panel decision to bar his address from the airwaves

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said “no one will shut our mouth,” after the Central Election Committee barred the media from airing his address, deeming it “illegal election propaganda.”

“All day politicians have been talking in the media. Tzipi, Bougi, and Yair Lapid, talked in every possible TV studio and issued obvious campaign propaganda. The only one barred from talking over the media - is me. The Likud prime minister,” Netanyahu said in a Facebook post.

It should be noted that Netanyahu appeared earlier on Tuesday on a Channel 10 talk show.

In his statement, posted on his Facebook page, Netanyahu called on his supporters to vote, saying the margin between Likud and the Zionist Union is due to “foreign funds” funneled to “leftist groups.” (Haaretz)

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback (R) suggested over the weekend that preventing women from having abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy was part of his state’s recipe for economic growth.

On Friday’s Washington Watch broadcast, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins ignored the economic disaster in Kansas, and praised Brownback for showing “Washington a thing or two” about improving the economy.

“It’s working,” Brownback agreed. “What we want Kansas to be is the best place in America to do two things: raise a family, grow a small business.”

“And we are moving that way,” he continued. “I’ve signed 10 pro-life bills, there’s another one moving through the legislature on ending dismemberment abortions, where you actually dismember the child to abort it. It’s passed the state Senate, it’s going to pass the House, and I’m going to sign it.”

Brownback said that he had also taken “all small business taxes off of small business income, and that’s seen a record number of small business filings, tax filers coming into the state of Kansas, job creation.”

Please tell me that’s not a common idea of lawmakers.

What range of values defines “common”?

None of those guys really gives a shit about Israel or the Jews, it is all about fulfilling the Prophecies of the Second Coming.

The house. It’s all about selling the house for more than it’s worth.

See: Cunningham, Duke.

For the others it’s about fulfilling Limbaugh’s prophecy of the End Obama.

More than 25%.

Doubt that more than a few believe it. The others just say it.

What was the bombshell he dropped where he feared for his life? I missed it.

I don’t even remember off hand. He was going to reveal something that would make him fear for his life. Maybe he was going to reveal that he is an abortion doctor and some right wing nut would shoot him.

re: #543 William Barnett-Lewis

Not sure that’s entirely fair to Lemay; while a far right nut case of the first water, he was far more intelligent & better educated than the gentleman from Arkansas.

Yeah. While I hate Lemay more than anybody who’s ever worn an American uniform other than Douglas MacArthur, he was supremely competent at what he did, and while he bragged that he could launch a first strike on his own, the fact is he didn’t. Would any of the current nutjobs be so restrained in the same position?
