Israeli Election Thread

Ongoing with the latest developments from Israel’s parliamentary elections today
LGF • Views: 31,930

Many eyes around the world are directed today towards Israel, where 5,883,365 eligible citizens poured into more than ten thousand voting stations to determine the identity of the country’s next prime minister and the make-up of its government coalition.

With polls now closed, it is estimated that 71.8% of eligible citizens voted in this election, representing the largest turnout since 1999.

Initial exit polls made public at 22:00 Israeli time (16:00 EST), have presented a close competition between the Likud, headed by current PM Binyamin Netanyahu, and the Zionist camp headed by Yizhak Herzog, with both parties essentially tied with 27 projected knesset seats each; The newly formed Arab list, a coalition between four Israeli-Arab parties, has made history and secured its place as the third largest party in the country with 13 projected seats; Yesh Atid, headed by former Finance Minister Yair Lapid, is the forth largest party with 12. Given the close results, analysts are predicting that the final election results will probably not be known before Thursday.

Despite claims by Netanyahu, who called on his supporters to arrive in large numbers due to “a significant Arab voter turnout”, no unusual turnout was noted among votes in the Israeli-Arab sector.

Earlier today, the Likud was forced to admit it distributed an edited tape of former Likud minister Moshe Kahlon, now running at the head of his own party, Kulanu. The tape, which made use of a two-year-old recording from when Kahlon was a Likud member, was used in election calls, misleading voters into believing that Kahlon was supporting PM Netanyahu. The Likud was banned from using the tape and was fined 20,000 NIS by the court.

Some photos from today’s trip to the election booth (disclaimer: this writer is a dual US/Israeli citizen, and as such is eligible to vote while in Israel):

“It’s us or them” - a Netanyahu poster found on many streets & billboards across the country
A Zionist Camp poster featuring Tzipi Livni
My thankfully nearly-empty voting station; To the left: a poster identifying the 26 (yes, twenty six!) parties citizens may vote for
“We are all Kahlon” - posters for the former Likud minister Moshe Kahlon’s ‘Kulanu’ (lit: ‘all of us’) party
Volunteers amid “Now We Win - Now We Replace” posters seen at a booth set up by V15, an organization advocating for a new Israeli government
Shas election posters: “Father is gazing from above” - because what really says elections more than a poster of a recently deceased religious leader looking down from heaven, quoted saying “fulfill my will!”…

Well, as we wait for results to come in and otherwise distract ourselves, I offer Lizards a harp piece for St. Patrick’s Day. In the spirit of the holiday, the first and last photos are from last year’s trip to Ireland; the rest are whatever I felt like throwing in there to make it long enough for the harp piece, which is Rainbow Round The Moon, by one of the harpers in the area here. I recorded this last night.

Way to look at it is that, in all likelihood, even if Bibi manages to cobble together a coalition to remain in power, he’ll be deeply weakened. And he’ll only stave off his final fall from power for another year or two. He’s simply burned too many bridges to remain in power much longer.

Thus threatening the bipartisanship relationship Israel has with its biggest ally. Bibi is a fucking monster for the precedent he set for putting his political career and partisan politics ahead of the country he supposedly represents.

Ha! I just read the bit about Illinois Rep. Aaron Schock resigning.

I just knew that arrogant little pipsqueak was gonna go down in flames. Good job you little money-guzzling idiot. It really seemed your whole reason for becoming a Representative was to grab as many goodies and money you could while being in office.

And, regarding something else I saw earlier about Netanyahu claiming American money was buying Arab voters to vote against him.

Uh, isn’t that a direct attack on the Republicans that allowed him to come and campaign to our congress? Who is the money in America that would want to influence an Israel election anyway but most likely powerful Republican types.

Oh yeah…ACORN…the out of business community group that helped poorer American communities get a voice…in America. Yeah, must have been them!

It’s even worse than that. The door opens at 0:12, the shooting victim appears in the doorway at 0:17, and the first shot comes at 0:26. The cops are face-to-face with the victim for less than 10 seconds before they start shooting.

I always go back and forth on this, because <anecdote on>the few millennials I know do actually work their asses off, and I haven’t personally seen the Everyone Gets a Trophy attitude. <anecdote off>

I also remember the condescending shit the boomers in the press used to rain down on us about being lazy, cynical, etc.; while completely forgetting how the WW2 generation used to do that to them.

That said, I’m not working in HR or in a position where I see this kind of stuff everyday, so YMMV.

There seems to be much speculation about Schock being gay. I don’t care one way or the other, especially now that he resigned. But I do care if he is gay and denies it and then becomes one of the toughest on gay issues to gloss over it all. There is no need for that crap in these times unless you really hate yourself.

A few weeks back I was doing some searching on Schock. Some of the gay related conjecture articles were very funny. Gay journalists don’t mess around and cut right to the chase. They seem to think he is at least a fabulous dresser.

I think it depends upon where you look. And to be fair, all music is derivative of something.

Just look at all the 60’s 70’s covers that have come out in recent years. Enough to fill a radio station playlist for a week. We even did that with Cover Week on AFN in Germany few years back, an idea which started with me calling in regularly to request a classic song and being told that they only play music from the 80’s and later, at which point I would request the modern cover version…

It turned into “cover version week”.

Editor’s note: Voting has just ended in Israel’s parliamentary elections, where exit polls indicate the battle between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party and the center-left Zionist Union is too close to call. Israel’s Channel 1 sees a tie with each party gaining 27 seats in the 120-member Knesset, while Channel 2 puts Likud ahead by one seat. Final results will be published Thursday, though coalition building is expected to take place sooner. - Tricia

Not that.

Yup.

That stated, the results still have quite an impact - the other right-wing parties, headed by Liberman and Bennet, sustained considerable losses, the Zionist camp/Labor jumped from about a dozen to 27, Lapid’s Yesh Atid party is the third largest (probably at the expense of the Zionist Camp IMHO), and one of the right wing ultra-orthodox parties, Yahad, didn’t pass (they were projected getting 4 mandates, and got just under - all votes effectively wiped out)..

re: #174 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)

I was born in 1959 and I know a lot of folks 20 years younger than me who still revere the Doors, Beatles and the Stones more than they like modern music.

And excuse me for sounding dated, but I have heard very little in the way of modern rock music that is not directly derivative of them or some other 60’s/70’s-era band.

And you know what. If you listen to any modern composer and a new piece for an orchestra…there are roots to Bach/Mozart/Brahms…late 1700s through the 2000s!

Not poking at you…just have to remember rock’n’roll is only 60 years old. It’s still a baby in my mind.

Also, not sure what you listen to, and how much, but I take a band like the Pixies (late 80s through early 90s) and I would say while there is copying, they also did new things to power pop rock that had never been done…because I think everyone thought “you can’t do that key change there, you can’t put that line there and only play it for two beats!!!

A Very Happy St Patricks Day to one and all. Erin Go Bragh!

Of all the money that e’er I spent
I’ve spent it in good company
And all the harm that ever I did
Alas it was to none but me
And all I’ve done for want of wit
To memory now I can’t recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all

Oh, all the comrades that e’er I had
They’re sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e’er I had
They’d wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I’ll gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be with you all

If I had money enough to spend
And leisure to sit awhile
There is a fair maid in the town
That sorely has my heart beguiled
Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips
I own she has my heart enthralled
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all

re: #189 Dr. Matt

According to timesofisrael.com as of 22:10:

An easy right-wing coalition is within reach

According to the major exit polls, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is within easy reach of a right-wing coalition.

Likud, Jewish Home, Yisrael Beytenu, Shas — all of whom are essentially committed to backing Netanyahu for premier — come to 48 seats.

If Netanyahu entices Kulanu and United Torah Judaism, likely an easy bargain to make, puts Netanyahu over the top with 63 seats — according to Channel 2’s poll.

The same coalition reaches 64 seats in Channel 10’s exit poll.

Not easy in the least - Jewish Home and Yisrael Beytenu, headed by Bennet and Lieberman respectively, are now FIERCE personal enemies of one Netanyahu. Any coalition with them will be nothing short of a personal hell for the man, and there’s no certainty whatsoever that Kulanu - headed by Moshe Kahlon, who was downright slandered and had lies spread about him up to this freakin’ morning (see the original article above) - will enter a coalition with the man either.

An alternative situation, where Netanyahu somehow gets the Zionist Camp and Lapid’s Yesh Atid (both parties headed by folks that Netanyahu personally FIRED when he forced these elections to begin with), will present another form of hell for the man.

It ain’t good from my personal perspective (wanted Netanyahu, who already served three times, out - because three’s more than enough with so little to show for it), but it’s nowhere near over..

Hey, Elvis covered ‘Big Mama’ Thornton. The Beatles covered the crap out of Little Richard and Chuck Berry. The Doors covered Brecht and Weill. Hendrix’ ‘Hey Joe’ was a cover (Leaves). Joan Jett’s ‘I Love Rock n’ Roll’ is a cover (Arrows). Black Crowes covered Otis Redding. And on and on.

Don’t. Unless his condition means he has to go more urgently than other people, it would be silly to leave a stall out of use except for a single person.

So get up & stop hatin’ all the world,
Keep callin’ out to me ‘cos its growin’ hard to see
Through all the blows & unkind words.

Let the putrid little shites while away their lonely nights,
Sayin’ all they wouldn’t dare by light of day,
And if the church or the state can’t find a cure for all the hate,
Then I can’t find the need to vote or even pray.

You’ve a penny, I’ve a pound, let’s get drunk & fuck around,

I was just gonna say the same thing, that AFAIK it’s like Arabic (and all the languages that use a variant of the Arabic alphabet): No capital letters.

Just as an aside, another difference is that while Arabic & Hebrew are both written from right to left, Hebrew letters are never connected (at least not that I’ve ever seen—someone correct me if I’m wrong).

In Arabic some letters are always connected to any letter that follows them, while others are never connected to letters that follow them (all letters can be connected to preceding letters on their right).

I hate this fucking bitch with all that’s in me. What she did for discourse was lower it to a previously unheard of level - and it already was bad enough. John McCain should rot in hell for all eternity for bringing her to national politics.

This has to be a fake quote… She’s dumb as a bag of hammers but even if she never supported birthers, she knows of them, and I don’t think it’s beyond her IQ to connect those dots.

Yep. Pretty sure it’s fake.

OTOH, she probably still has a bunch of “I Stand With Bibi” t-shirts that her PAC was selling for $35 each. (That is not a joke.)

I should start an organization of unreal Scotsmen.*

* - There was a family belief that we were 1/8 to 1/4 Scot due to a family name on my mother’s side (Rose). Turns out when someone did some genealogy work on that side a few years ago that the Rose name was an anglicized “Roos” and that part of the family was actually heavily German like the other 3/4.

I also joke sometimes that I am partially French since some of the ancestral stock came from Alsace. In the 1700s.

Hmmm…where’s Lawhawk when ya need him?

What happened in Tom Cotton’s Law Career

I was intrigued when I noticed that Cotton joined the Army two-and-a-half years after graduating from Harvard Law. During that time, he had served as a law clerk for a Reagan-appointed Appeals Court judge in the 5th Circuit, then was associated with two different law firms. In two-and-a-half years? Then he joined the Army as a second lieutenant in the Infantry, rather than becoming a JAG as an automatic captain. I haven’t seen this discussed anywhere, but I have to wonder whether he was a superstar lawyer who just wanted to fight, or whether he a just a very bad lawyer.

As I understand it, if he was an attorney in good standing, he would have been eligible to be directly commissioned as a captain to be a JAG attorney, but instead, he went into the infantry as the most junior of officers. Maybe he was feeling especially patriotic and wanted to fight. Maybe he hated law that much & wanted to forget it. Maybe he actually did just suck at law, & was told to find another line of work. Maybe he was actually trying to burnish his credentials for electoral politics. No one’s saying.

I knew there was no upper/lower case, but is there any equivalent of the way Arabic uses the Kufic script, like for monumental inscriptions? I know in Israel they teach the original Hebrew alphabet in school (as opposed to the Square Aramaic script they use now), maybe they use that for some applications?

I don’t know anywhere that the old Hebrew writing is used, or that it’s even taught outside of specialized antiquities and archaeology studies.

There is safrut which is used for writing Torah scrolls, mezuzot and tefillin but that is just calligraphy of Hebrew block lettering, and Rashi script which is a round font.
