Rick Santorum Meets the Crazies at the “South Carolina National Security Action Summit”

Did you know President Obama tried to nuke Charleston? Yes, he really did, honest! It’s amazing how well the left wing media covered this up!

The look on Santorum’s face is classic, as a “retired schoolteacher” rambles on and on spewing one batshit crazy World Net Daily talking point after another. And then he proceeds to just carry on as if nothing weird happened, and doesn’t even mention the whole nuking Charleston thing.

Here we see the right wing base in its natural habitat.

As I said, this guy was number 2 in the Republican primary four years ago and honestly if he had more corporate pool, he could well have been the nominee. He’s a big part of everything wrong with the GOP as a party since he’s a pathetic coward that relies on scaring GOP voters about abortion, gay people, and President Obama because he wants to control people through fear.

Yeah, how come we haven’t heard about this? I know I don’t watch Faux or listen to Rush, but we usually hearing their reports 2nd or 3rd hand from someone, but this? Just nothing. Media, please do better.

Here’s a local news piece on the event. Sponsored by Frank Gaffney’s Center For Security Policy, it also featured John Bolton and Ted Cruz. Bobby Jindal couldn’t make a planned appearance due to “plane issues”, but did send along a video.

Yeah Iran-Contra. He also armed Saddam too. Seriously I just look at the shit Reagan actually did as president and I try to imagine the right’s reaction if Obama did them. Not Obama’s fault that their beloved Reagan did more to enable terrorists than Obama ever has.

It always amuses me when Reagan’s cheerleaders and yes i’ll call them that love to claim he championed democracy. You only need to look in Latin and South America to know that Ronnie didn’t care about totalitarianism, if the Soviets had been a right wing and anti-communist regime, he would have had no problem with them just like he had no problem with Pinochet, the Argentine junta, and the Contras.

Rick Santorum is a spineless punk.

He could have stopped that crazy tirade right from the get-go but he let it go because he wanted to amp the crap up.

That is why the GOP is a total failure. Accept the crazies for the votes and not a care in the world that the rhetoric is getting dangerous.

They better listen a little close though. That loon was ready to take on ALL politicians, even saying the last election was a dud because Obama and Obamacare are still there. They are getting closer to saying the Republicans are as much a problem.

If loony has a gun and gets too amped up and attacks, it won’t matter what party the dead politician is from. The GOP better start to realize this little scenario they help along could well be aimed at them too.

Doesn’t take away from that Reagan’s sole objection to the Soviet’s totalitarianism was that it was a leftist regime and not that they were you know a totalitarian regime. Reagan can’t be praised as this great champion of freedom when he not only turned a blind eye to totalitarianism in our backyard but also enabled it. Sorry if that hurts but the man was a capital F-fraud.

Well, if he’d pointed out that she was nuts and completely disconnected from reality, he would have lost the election right there, and we can’t have that happening. This is just part of the price we pay for politics, clearly, and no Republican should be held accountable for it.

CCJ brags about being a Viking, a 9th Century Viking woman is found buried wearing a ring with the inscription “for Allah”, so CCJ must be Muslim!!!!

(On a side note, I also find it amusing the woman was buried in Birka, Sweden…Birka sounds suspiciously like burka, no? :D )

From the WaPo story, this is also amusing given CCJ’s poop history:

Still, the Scandinavians did raise some eyebrows on their journeys. In an otherwise complimentary description of people now believed to be Vikings, Ahmad ibn Fadlan, an emissary of the Abbasid Caliph, wasn’t so sure about their hygiene. “They are the filthiest of all Allah’s creatures,” the Arab writer wrote in the 10th century. “They do not purify themselves after excreting or urinating or wash themselves when in a state of ritual impurity after coitus and do not even wash their hands after food.”

Update on the flash drive issue.

Recuva and something else I tried couldn’t identify the drive. So, I opted for a quick format to at least allow access. Recuva still found no files. At this point I suspected the possibility that the drive corrupted when I loaded all the photos on it.

The source laptop was my work one. Encrypted hard drive, no save points, and additional annoyances. Cursory checks today indicated that I was not going to easily recover anything from there.

So, since I had an adapter, I pulled the SD card from my camera and hooked it up to the laptop. Recuva was able to find jpegs that could be recovered and I got 304 of the photos back. Luckily I had only taken another twenty photos with the camera on the remainder of the trip after I did the initial download. So I lost twenty-one photos from Skidaway Island and of Fort Pulaski. USS Alabama and the Naval Aviation Museum sets are intact. Might still find a few of the missing ones squirreled away since I did some editing and shifting before trying to do the mass transfer.

Overall, it could have worked out a bit better. But it also could have been quite a bit worse. Thanks to all who offered advice and software recommendations towards dealing with this. Plus the moral support. :)

DD, no fire ants included with the recovery.

Did you know President Obama tried to nuke Charleston? Yes, he really did, honest!

A nuclear terrorist incident in Charleston was the premise of the 1983 made-for-TV movie Special Bulletin. Like Orson Welles’s famous 1938 broadcast of War of the Worlds, the movie was presented in the format of a news broadcast, with many, many disclaimers.
I really wonder if this might be the origin of the batshit conspiracy claims we are seeing? Perhaps the conspira-liars hope to represent outtakes as the real thing, or take advantage of the base having vague memories of having seen “something about that?”

The most memorable, to me, ‘Six Million Dollar Man’ episode involved a winery run by nuns. Bad guys were smuggling diamonds in the bottles. During the chase scene the bad guys’ black Suburban, or whatever, was inundated by a flock of a thousand sheep and could not pursue. One of the bad guys jumps up on the hood and yells at the nuns: “Get the flock out of here!”

That is impressive. My only observation on that topic is that Dick Cheney has a big mouth for a VP from an administration that was among the worst in US history.

The #1 spot on that list goes to the Buchanan administration for dithering before the civil war got started, along with the astounding belief that the Dred Scott decision would improve matters.

However, W et al. may well end up at #2 in the long run.

The geo-politics in that case outweighed the moral considerations. South Africa’s gold, diamonds and strategic position were too important to lose access to.

My friend’s 16 year old kid told me that about Iraq. We needed their oil so it was right for us to invade their country because they had oil and we need it. I chalked it up to a child’s mind.

You realize that that comment is completely sociopathic, right?

This is what I told that kid. That is like saying that you like someone’s shoes and you are more important than that other person and that they shouldn’t have them when you don’t. You can’t kill someone for their shoes. Nor can you for their gold, diamonds or position in the world.

I like the way this guy writes.

Without abortion and gay sex, Cathi Herrod would cease to exist, melting like the Wicked Witch of the West hit with a torrential downpour.

Why, the more sodomy, scissoring, and pregnancy terminations there are, the better off Herrod, president of the Center for Arizona Policy, is.

See, her six-figure salary at the far-right, evangelical Christian “nonprofit” depends on her fanning the flames of hatred against gays and railing against the evils of not carrying a pregnancy to term.

Ironically (or not, depending on how you look at it), you could say Herrod’s doing a dang good job of keeping the abortion rate high in Arizona.

Even his ‘Top 10 Hottest Women in Arizona Politics’ wasn’t as bad as I expected.

I swear, I don’t think I’ve seen so many people go off the deep end in my life as now.

ODS appears to be invasive as hell these days and I fear it will get worse, esp when the Dems win 2016 because you know it will be all his fault.

We gotta get cracking, because, do we really want to continue like this? The election won’t be won if we don’t, and it’s has to be not just politics, but educating people as well. Too many reactionaries out there who will cheat, steal and kill just to win it, from what appears to be going on. I don’t want to live in that kind of country.

And it’s not just the crazies, it’s ordinary people, like the woman at the auto repair who said she was a science teacher—pleasant enough at first, but then started talking about places and neighborhoods you couldn’t go and certain “kinds” of people.

I read her well, and told her that I saw people the same way, that I thought they were human beings like me, and I wasn’t going to judge on that kind of basis. The conversation ended…

131 Shiplord Kirel  Mar 18, 2015 4:29:28pm

Charleston nuke woman is not a lone nut, she is part of a well organized and fairly large subculture of nuts. This is apparent from her references to things like Klayman and favorite WND talking points and conspiracy claims. This subculture, in turn, feeds on itself, a magnifying echo chamber whose stridency and potential for violence grow with each iteration. This, too, is apparent from the woman’s violent tone.

I really think we are headed for a violent showdown with these people, their rage grows by the day and their worldview is so divorced from reality that no compromise, negotiation, or mitigation is possible.

Whether liberals should arm themselves against this possibility is very much a matter of individual values and circumstances, so I can’t make any recommendation one way or the other. We have a fair contingent of armed liberals right here. It is not a decision to be taken lightly.

One thing I will say, and I mean this: Arming ourselves does not make us “just like them” or lower us to their level. Their self-perceived need for firearms is based on a historically and technically illiterate fantasy of being able to defeat the national army or the racist expectation of massacring zombie like hordes of “others” who will pour out of the inner cities to loot and pillage “when the welfare stops.” This is light years from discouraging drunken vigilantes or getting the drop on an amateur assassin.

Still, I don’t mind speaking up. If they want to beat up an old lady, they have real, deep-seated problems that no one can fix, but I certainly can live with myself in peace while they flail in their rage.

When a half-dozen men and a woman in street clothes closed in on University of Virginia student Elizabeth Daly, 20, she and two roommates panicked.

That led to Daly spending a night and an afternoon in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. Her initial offense? Walking to her car with bottled water, cookie dough and ice cream just purchased from the Harris Teeter in the Barracks Road Shopping Center for a sorority benefit fundraiser.

A group of state Alcoholic Beverage Control agents clad in plainclothes approached her, suspecting the blue carton of LaCroix sparkling water to be a 12-pack of beer. Police say one of the agents jumped on the hood of her car. She says one drew a gun. Unsure of who they were, Daly tried to flee the darkened parking lot.

re: #153 Mattand

You know how keeps saying conservatives have no empathy?

Well, you know that the world will totally end if there is not an uninterrupted supply of gold and diamonds.

Speaking of which:
Security cameras are a diamond firm’s best friend
De Beers keeps a close eye on its coveted carats. Sorters’ pants lack cuffs; pockets are sewn tight.

KIMBERLY, South Africa - Not many places in Harry Oppenheimer House are outside the range of a security camera.

There are cameras scanning the lobby. Cameras in the elevators. Cameras mounted on the ceiling of the visitors’ lounge. And dozens of cameras scan each of the seven floors where 107 sorters hunch over glittering heaps of one of the most valuable commodities on earth: Diamonds.

Harry Oppenheimer House is the main sorting facility for De Beers Consolidated Mining Inc., the world’s largest diamond producer. Eight of the 23 operating diamond mines in existence are in South Africa, and nearly every stone mined from them is sorted and graded here before leaving the country. And with something as tiny and as precious as diamonds - a gem-quality stone is worth thousands of times more per ounce than gold - the security measures go far beyond cameras.

Sorting diamonds is not a line of work for someone made nervous by close supervision.

The women sorters dress conservatively and plainly - no lace allowed. The men wear maroon sweaters and gray flannel trousers. The trousers have no cuffs, and the pockets of both men’s and women’s clothes are stitched up so that diamonds can’t stray into the garments. A sign at the exit of each sorting area reminds workers: “Check your clothing.”

snip

About 10 million carats of diamonds go through Harry Oppenheimer House each year - about two tons of stones (a carat is 200 milligrams). De Beers knows to the thousandth of a carat what goes in and what goes out: Sorters can’t go home for the day if the weight of their diamonds is off.

Sorters used to work with scales, but De Beers discovered that some light-fingered employees were substituting poor-quality stones for precious gems of equal weight. Now only supervisors have access to scales, and they are separated by glass walls from the sorters, though they are not beyond the gaze of the security cameras.

If any questions about honesty arise, De Beers has a full-body X-ray machine on the first floor; diamonds fluoresce when irradiated, even in body cavities. De Beers also has designated a room for strip searches, said Angus Galloway, the general manager of the sorting facility.

There’s more.

I never understood the fascination with diamonds.

He won with 24% of the vote, which means 75% of the voters did not vote for him.

That doesn’t speak badly of the Israeli people, but it speaks volumes about their political process. It looks like the will of the Italian people is better represented by their government(s) than that of the average citizen of Israel.

I like shiny things as much as the next girl. But I am fine with fake shiny things. I see no point in $1000 rings and the like. Give me a good solid silver or platinum (I don’t like gold) setting with fake ass shiny stuff. As long as it doesn’t turn my finger or neck green, it’s all good.

Take any rational people, put them in a small place surrounded by enemies and throw ordnance at them for decades. Add in dealing with bad actors when trying to find peace. Eventually, hope for any kind of peaceful arrangement disintegrates.

I think they may be more weary of lost hope than they are of continuing conflict.

Note also that this also applies to the Palestinians.

I understand geopolitics quite well having taken course work in international relations and being a student of history but at the same time, geopolitics should never be an excuse and that post came off to me as an excuse. Not to mention the part about the diamond mines and gold.

It’s a tough situation for all involved. My real problem with Bibi honestly is the complete lack of respect he shows to the leader of a country not to mention man who has been a great ally to his country. Plus it’s clear to me that Bibi loves catering to American wingnuts for support which I think is disgusting given the fact that those people only really care about Israel to satisfy their doomsday prophecies and just a generation or so ago were blaming liberalism/socialism/Marxism on Jews. Bibi ignores the Western right wing’s anti-semitic history at his own peril.

Begin and Sadat proved that peace was possible despite full-on wars. Rabin and King Hussein proved that was possible again decades later.

You need the right leaders at the right time in history to make peace happen.

Right now, Israel lacks that leadership - I just don’t see Netanyahu as being that leader. But he’s not alone. Abbas isn’t that leader either. Nor is anyone else in the region.

The geo-politics in that case outweighed the moral considerations. South Africa’s gold, diamonds and strategic position were too important to lose access to.

Those were HUMAN BEINGS enduring abject poverty, suffering and terror under apartheid and you’re dismissing them as if they were nothing, “collateral damage”. Are you a Christian? Is that what Jesus taught you? I don’t think so.

Go over to Amazon and buy yourself a copy of Kaffir Boy, then come back and tell me what’s effing important. Better yet, here’s are some words from the author himself (emphasis added):

Much has been written and spoken about the politics of apartheid: the forced removals of black communities from their ancestral lands, the Influx Control and Pass laws that mandate where blacks can live, work, raise families, be buried; the migrant labour system that forces black men to live away from their families eleven months out of a year; the breaking up of black families in the ghettos as the authorities seek to create a so-called white South Africa; the brutal suppression of the black majority as it agitates for equal rights. But what does it all mean in human terms?

When I was growing up in Alexandra it meant hate, bitterness, hunger, pain, terror, violence, fear, dashed hopes and dreams. Today it still means the same for millions of black children who are trapped in the ghettos of South Africa, in a lingering nightmare of a racial system that in many respects resembles Nazism. In the ghettos black children fight for survival from the moment they are born. They take to hating and fearing the police, soldiers and authorities as a baby takes to its mother’s breast.

In my childhood these enforcers of white prerogatives and whims represented a sinister force capable of crushing me at will; of making my parents flee in the dead of night to escape arrest under the Pass laws; of marching them naked out of bed because they did not have the permit allowing them to live as husband and wife under the same roof. They turned my father — by repeatedly arresting him and denying him the right to earn a living in a way that gave him dignity — into such a bitter man that, as he fiercely but in vain resisted the emasculation, he hurt those he loved the most.

Here he explains why at age 10 he tried to commit suicide:

Some of the things you say are truly disgusting & inhumane in the extreme.

All Adam’s race are members of one frame;
Since all, at first, from the same essence came.
If thou feel’st not for others’ misery,
A son of Adam is no name for thee.

Therein lies the problem. People, even a majority of people, wanting peace won’t do it in this situation. It takes a leader who can galvanize that desire, and who can keep at it when rockets or bombs fly, and it takes another leader on the other side to do the same - at the same time!

But every time it fails, hope dies a little more.

I regret that I have only one upding for this. Seriously DF, try looking at issues from the other person’s shoes. Try imagining yourself as a black South African seeing Ronald Reagan speak on television talk about the concepts of freedom and then see him helping fund the regime that treated you, your friends, and family like they were subhuman simply because of their race? It’s easy to just view things from an American centric pov but we have to do better than that. One reason why I’m so sensitive to poverty and bigotry is because I know if as a person with Asperger’s Syndrome that if I weren’t white, American, and middle class that my life would be a hell of a lot tougher. I want others to have the same chances I’ve had and I don’t feel they should be punished because they were born into the “wrong” situation.

Not sure if it holds true now but when I backpacked through EU in the 90s, most of the drinking ages were 16 in Belgium, CH, Netherlands, and so on. But the driving age was 18. It made perfect sense to me- first you learned how to drink, and then you learned how to drive. But going to the bars was weird as a 20-something as there were kiddies with rosy cheeks getting their legal buzz on all around me. And probably better able to control their liquor than me, too.

If the Soviet Union had not been so hostile to the United States, Reagan would not have been elected. So your counter-factual runs afoul of a cardinal group of facts, those being the reasons Ronald Reagan was elected president.

Go back and read about the 1980 election. Carter didn’t lose because the public thought he was too soft on the USSR. He lost because the economy sucked, and the Iran hostage crisis was an albatross around his neck he never could escape.

Spoken just like a true sociopath. Seriously, who the fuck are you to dismiss the “moral considerations” so casually? Especially when the moral questions were involved the atrocity of apartheid. Could you similarly rationalize Jim Crow?

The notion that we had to do this is bullshit. Many other western nations divested in protest for the South African crimes against humanity, and they didn’t suffer this imaginary geo-political disaster you imagine would have happened to us.

And wasn’t “viking” more of a pastime than an ethnic group?

More an occupation. Not every Scandinavian was a Viking, and claiming Viking ancestry is a lie, because birth, marriage and death records were not kept in Sweden (for example) until the establishment of churches long after the Viking era. On one part of my family tree, I can go back reliably to about 1400. Before that time, family history becomes murky. That would be true for anyone claiming Scandinavian ancestry — unless they happened to be descendants of royalty.

If Chuckles is of Swedish ancestry, those people went a-vikingr east into Rus (now Russia), and got nowhere close to Ireland. The Danes and the Norwegians went west, first as marauders and explorers, then as merchants and colonists. They sailed as far as the Levant, and of course to Iceland, Greenland and North America.

The real “Viking” invasion came in the 19th century, when all those Scandinavians flocked to America and Canada as immigrants.

Well, you know that the world will totally end if there is not an uninterrupted supply of gold and diamonds.

Speaking of which:
Security cameras are a diamond firm’s best friend
De Beers keeps a close eye on its coveted carats. Sorters’ pants lack cuffs; pockets are sewn tight.

snip

There’s more.

I never understood the fascination with diamonds.

Marketing. The diamond cartel has fabricated an elaborate campaign over the many years to embue diamonds with a mystique, first by convincing people diamonds are incredibly rare, then by marketing them to rich people and young couples who want their love to last forever. Diamonds are only rare because the cartel makes it so. That’s why DeBeers and other diamond producers run such tight ships. “Rogue” diamonds would depress world diamond prices, and thus the cartel’s profits. If someone managed to find a new mineral deposit rich in diamonds, the cartel would be on his back in no time.
