Neo Nazi Gunman Arrested in Mesa, Ariz., Shootings That Left 1 Dead, 5 Wounded

White supremacist mass shooting in Arizona
US News • Views: 32,591

The 88 and rune tattoos indicate that the suspect is likely to be a neo-Nazi or other white supremacist gang member.

UPDATE at 3/18/15 5:09:15 pm by Thanos

SPLC and others confirm affiliation with Hammerskins; other mass shooters like the Sikh Temple shooter have come from that group as well.

Ryan Giroux

The gunman who cut a bloody swath through a Phoenix suburb Wednesday morning, shooting six people in Mesa, Ariz., has been arrested, city officials announced.

Police did not identify the suspect, but an Arizona law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation told the Los Angeles Times the man was 41-year-old Ryan Giroux.

The official requested anonymity because he or she was not authorized to discuss the case. Giroux has a lengthy criminal history that includes convictions for assault in Arizona and Los Angeles County, court records show.

Bet good money they’ll be able to get this guy not only alive but with not much bodily damage. Sorry know that distracts from the fact this guy killed someone but damn it if the police can get murderers alive, there’s no reason they can’t get African-Americans who at the very most may have been petty crooks.

Neo-Nazis should not be able to own guns.

If some amendment says otherwise, it’s wrong.

Hammerskins is also where the Sikh temple shooter came from, they are notoriously violent.

No argument with that but I wonder how you do that since not every Neo-Nazi will pun intended be wearing his Nazi love on his sleeve.

Three mass shootings in one day, Malmo, Mesa, and Tunis. At least two appear to be totalitarian-inspired (Neo-Nazi in Mesa and Daesh in Tunis), and the 3rd a Chicago-grade piece of gang-warfare. Not a good day.

Reminder: I’m from Chicago, and white gangs have wrecked havoc of Malmo’s level just as black gangs have. So with me its not racial, just a note that Europe has seldom seen gang warfare on the level of Chicago’s worst.

OT, but here is the daily update.

Hungary ended up giving independence to Bosnia and Croatia, which I quickly absorbed.

The war with Spain ended nasty. I didn’t get territories, but they were forced to leave Naples, except for Palermo. They also gave independence to 3 nations in Algeria, which I will absorb one by one. I will have to fight them again, but I will have a much better navy.

Also, Russia is becoming an issue. Because of how angry I am with the Russians right now, I aim to completely eliminate them in the game.

Edit: Spanish were able to push back, but only once I had occupied Madrid. 45k was too few soldiers. Next time, it will be 75k.

It should also be noted, of the three Turkic Gunpowder Empires (Ottomans, Safavids, Mughals), the Mughals were the one who had issues with Religious Tolerance the most.

Iran is the Time Lord of nations, able to adapt over time. And the Ottomans got to where they were by being relatively open.

The Mughals were like that for a time, but Aurangzeb was intolerant to a stupid extent.

Sucks to be a bitcoin dependent drug dealer.

Over the past weekend, the massive anonymous market known as Evolution halted withdrawals of bitcoin from its website, telling users that it was dealing with technical difficulties. Then on Tuesday evening, both its market and user forum went offline, with no opportunity for drug buyers and sellers to pull out the funds they had stored in their Evolution accounts. The result has been a wave of panic that’s shaken the online black market economy as much as any of the law enforcement drug busts of the last two years.

The Mughals were like that for a time, but Aurangzeb was intolerant to a stupid extent.

Aurangzeb was a zealot and he was also too ambitious by half. Unlike previous Mughal rulers he had to conquer all the land in India he could seize, regardless of the costs or if his empire could effectively garrison its holdings. The result was Hindu revolts beginning in Aurangzeb’s old age that rapidly crippled the Mughal empire.

That Aurangzeb lived as long as he did didn’t help either. He lived into his late 70’s, and his eldest sons were in their 50’s when he died, meaning that his successor was comparatively weak and short-reigning.

The story through history, a powerful long lived king resulting in weaker successors.

I would think the best example was Ramesses II.

His following Pharaohs would have harder and harder times controlling their courts, and fighting back against the Sea Peoples effectively crippled Egypt.

Punchline being that we don’t even know who the Sea Peoples are.

I prefer the name the Greeks gave Ramesses II, Ozymandias.

One could also put Louis XIV of France in that same category.

It is also to me the height of irony that most people know Ramesses II Greek name of Ozymandias through Percy Shelly’s famous poem. The irony comes from the fact the shortly after he wrote it the Rosetta Stone was deciphered, and the ability to translate Egyptian hieroglyphics meant that more people today know of Ramesses II than know of Percy Shelly.

A “friend” of mine (my friend’s daughter in law) has a neck tattoo at the nape of her neck. At their wedding, everyone was commenting about “some other guy’s namea’ on her neck.

It was her brother’s name and the date he died.

There’s a ton of people here in So Cal with the RIP stickers on their cars, the deceased, their birth and death dates, and a in forever memory blurb.

It’s beyond my understanding really. Take it to a tattoo? I just don’t know.

But that’s just moi.

I was always told that the extremely long reign of Pepi II brought down the Old Kingdom. According to Wiki here, it might not be that cut and dried, but I think it’s arguable.

Sometimes, I think there’s a bit more of a message in them, like when there are several at one particular wide spot in the road. Like it’s a “Watch what you’re doing here” sign or something (like maybe the DOT should do something about this shoulder). And I always look at it like there’s a story of someone there, who was loved by somebody. It’s in public, not shut off in a corner of a cemetery.

Interesting, and yes, sad, topic.

The county to the north of us is Black-majority, dirt-poor. Its roads were the worst in the tri-state area. The sheriff encouraged family crosses, and even put up a few to mark the killing field. At one time he had 51 crosses on about 40 miles of road. When that story became a national news item, the money to fix the problem ‘appeared’.

On the side of a road in NJ, where I grew up, there is a little terra-cotta angel holding a container for flowers. (Or at least there used to be.)

It’s a tangible reminder of a place (and a day) where a lot of lives changed. And I found that, for me, it helped (just a little) with closure. With feeling like she’s not entirely forgotten.

I don’t begrudge anyone else their closure either.

My claim was of necessity, not justification. No one in the US government truly supported South Africa’s apartheid system, but until the end of the Cold War the problem was the danger that a ANC-led government would have aligned with the Soviet Union. And given the strategic position South Africa occupies and its natural resources, a Soviet-aligned South Africa would have been unacceptable for the national security of the United States. So we continued to trade with South Africa, though not in arms or military aid (the tech transfer for the G5 howitzer being the sole exception).

I can’t claim that was morally justified, but it was what we had to do at the time. The goal was to maintain the USA’s strength as a nation, and it did not have a moral purpose. And we helped push out the National Party soon after the Berlin Wall came down. So it was an ugly, immoral, but needed thing to continue trading with South Africa during the 1970’s-1980’s. it was about power, not who was right, as was much of the Cold War. As a nation, we did evil to keep our power, power we needed to survive.

If anyone knows what a better policy would have been, given what we knew at the time and what our track record of managing revolution is, please tell me.

The Cold War prism you’re looking through doesn’t really give a full picture of all the factors involved. We used the same paranoid rationale (“OMG, if the Soviets get influence in this country—Chile, Vietnam, Nicaragua, S. Africa, etc.—then we’re all doomed”) to justify a whole array of illegal, immoral, counterproductive, excessive acts around the globe. Fact is, not only were there many patriotic anti-communist American political leaders who opposed the Reagan/Thatcher policy, but so did the leaders of many western democracies who realized that South Africa, even with the ANC in power, was not the giant bogeyman portrayed by the right.

You can claim necessity all you want but it shows to me the great problems that exist with your belief system. As I asked you downstairs, try to put yourself in the eyes of a black South African seeing US presidents and political leaders talking about freedom and liberty and then seeing that government champion the regime that treated you and yours as if you were subhuman. Not only was supporting Apartheid morally wrong, it ruined our credibility to be a leader against authoritarianism. I really wish you would try to look at the human side of things. I am well aware that the Cold War required difficult decisions by our policymakers but at the same time, lines needed to be drawn and supporting Apartheid was a big fuck up made by many a conservative Western policymaker and frankly I am not ready to concede that it was just strategic in decision like you want to claim given that many of those same policymakers also were okay with Jim Crow segregation.

I got so tired of Michele Bachmann being in town every other week…so far, we’ve already had the teabagger hootenanny, Rick Santorum, Ted Cruz, Rick Perry and I can’t even remember who else, not counting our “native son” Lindsey, and it’s only March of 2015.

And remember, this brilliant state went for Newt in the primary last time around. Good times.

re: #168 palomino

Said it much better than I could have, thank you.

182 klys (maker of Silmarils)  Mar 18, 2015 9:11:31pm

Sometimes you just have to laugh, because …well… yes.

Matt McLaughlin, a lawyer from Huntington Beach in Orange County, paid his $200 filing fee Feb. 26 to submit the “Sodomite Suppression Act” to the voters. Declaring it is “better that offenders should die rather than that all of us should be killed by God’s just wrath,” it would require that anyone who touches a person of the same gender for sexual gratification be put to death by “bullets to the head or by any other convenient method.”

[…]

The state Supreme Court has the power to keep measures off the ballot if they violate the California Constitution. It has exercised that power to disqualify measures that cover more than one subject, broadly defined, and to block last year’s attempt by legislative Democrats to seek a statewide advisory vote on a U.S. constitutional amendment that would limit corporate spending in federal elections. Presumably the justices could locate a state constitutional provision that would discourage shooting people in the head.

(Emphasis mine.)

183 klys (maker of Silmarils)  Mar 18, 2015 9:12:35pm

In other news, the whole method in which propositions can be presented to the voters (and the state constitution can be amended) in CA is completely fucked up. I didn’t have an adequate appreciation for this until I moved here.

184 HappyWarrior  Mar 18, 2015 9:14:30pm

Why didn’t the people of Latin America, South America, Africa, and Asia deserve the same freedom that conservatives talked to of the Eastern Bloc? Sorry it’s bullshit just to claim that our interests involved supporting shitty regimes. It’s a cop out. One that frankly ignores the inherent racism that did exist in policy where democracy and freedom were something that was thought to only be deserving to white people. It’s something that goes back to Woodrow Wilson and Colonel House refusing to meet Ho Chi Minh during the Paris Peace Conference due to President Wilson’s own prejudices. I’ll argue that not only was it morally and ethically wrong to support tyrannical anti-communists simply because they were anti-communists, I’d argue it was strategically wrong too and we see the direct seeds of that in present day US-Iranian relations. And as Palomino has greatly pointed out, there were many Western anti-communists who saw the folly of such policies even then so it’s not mere hindsight bias.

I know you’ve left for the night but I get mad because you just shrug it off as a game we had to play. You never even try to place yourselves in the situation that the people in those countries. And I’ll disagree with you until kingdom come that ti was done out of necessity. The fact is the Reagan administration actually did reverse many of the positive steps the Carter administration had made with in regards to third world dictatorships. And again I’ll ask you to put yourself in the situation of a person hearing American political leaders talk about how communism was despotic yet seeing them go around and give monetary and military aid to the right wing dictatorship and guerrillas in your backyard. I’ll further argue that not only was this wrong but it did not help our interests like you claim. It only made us look like hypocrites to the world.

What I find telling about this line of thinking (call we group it in with neo-con stuff in general?) is how lacking it is in results. Over and over again, a certain type of politician and pundit says we have to do this or that, and yet over and over again those moral compromises come back to bite the U.S. on the ass. I wish there were some way to perform some Sabermetrics on foreign policy and show with stats how these “necessary” moves ultimately make the U.S. and the world less safe and less secure.

I really disagree with you there. For one, we actually did support some communist regimes that were independent of Moscow. The Romanian regime led by Ceau↞scu and also the Yugoslav one by Marshal Tito had tact Western support. So, I really don’t think it was as simple as containing communism. I really do think there was a bit of racism in why our policy was okay with totalitarianism in one part of the world but not okay with it in the other. I really do feel that we alienated a lot of people who we otherwise could have had as allies against the Soviets if we had been about the principle of anti-totalitarianism.

That was my point. It was all about containment. It didn’t matter too much what you did to your people, as long as we could use you to our advantage.
The Soviet Union wasn’t even really completely Communist. It was all about isolating them, more than stopping the spread of global Communism.

Fair enough but did we really isolate them by supporting the Apartheid regime? I’d argue that we actually enabled their propaganda by doing that. Same thing with Latin America.

re: #158 Dark_Falcon

It’s not easy hindcasting alternate strategies. But I remember feeling, while visiting South Africa, a sense of incredible relief that an impossibly good ending had somehow been reached. All around, places like Zimbabwe and Mozambique were mired in civil war and economic collapse, and here South Africa was, with a degree of comity between the races and the tribes, with an economy that was still ticking over, and with real hope that it might last. Endure.

And it has.

Nelson Mandela was one of the great statesmen of the 20th century. His “Truth and Reconciliation” policy was probably the key. The basic premise was that all crimes committed by any parties to the conflict, for the purpose of advancing war aims, would be forgiven. No war crimes trials, no nothing.

But—-you had to fess up. If you kept silent and were later found out, too bad so sad you missed your chance.

There was a spate of confession. And what it did was it hammered out of all the bitter people, the ones who were so sure just how wicked the other side had been, any sense that their own side’s hands were way cleaner. And it drove home the point that pure justice, untempered by mercy, would be just too drastic and too comprehensive.

Lincoln’s “With Malice Toward None” speech had elements of the same insights. But dead men can’t set policy and things didn’t work out as well as they ought to have.

So go ahead and mull over alternative strategies. Nothing we did was anywhere near perfect. But dang, we got lucky, if it was all luck. Or maybe having the Soviet Union and its tendency to fish in troubled water sidelined by the time things unfolded in South Africa improved the odds.

Ben Carson Warns Sunni and Shia Muslims Could ‘Unite’ to ‘Destroy’ U.S.

Asked how he compares the threat of ISIS to that of Iran, along with North Korea, Russia and China, Carson said that the U.S.’s “biggest enemies” are on the Sunni Muslim side, meaning ISIS. But, he added, “there are a number of sponsored terrorist groups that emanate from the Shia, which are based primarily in Iran.”

“Right now, they’re fighting each other in Iraq, admittedly,” he continued. “But in the long run, I think they would gladly unite against us in their attempt to destroy the United States, our way of life, and Israel. And we have to be extraordinarily careful about any alliances with them.”

As Hewitt put it, Carson is unique in positing the prospect of a Shia-Sunni alliance, pointing out, “they are at each other’s throats right now, aren’t they?”

I am writing to express dismay at Sewanee’s recent awarding of an honorary degree in Theology to Tom Wright, former bishop of Durham and now professor of New Testament at St. Andrews University in Scotland. I am the current professor of New Testament at the School of Theology at Sewanee, and Wright’s receiving an honorary degree during my tenure is a professional embarrassment. Some of the readers of this letter will know Wright as an outspoken opponent of LGBT rights and a vociferous critic of the Episcopal Church for its progressive stance. I find Wright’s position on these matters offensive and harmful. It is an affront to the School of Theology in general and to its LGBT community and its allies in particular.

But that is not my complaint here. My complaint is that Sewanee has recognized Wright as a scholar in my discipline, when in fact he is little more than a book-a-year apologist. Wright comes to the evidence not with honest questions but with ideologically generated answers that he seeks to defend. I know of no critical scholar in the field who trusts his work. He contradicts what I stand for professionally as well as the kind of hard-won intellectual integrity I hope to instill in my students. I feel like the professor of biology who has had to sit by and watch a Biblical creationist receive an honorary degree in science.

To be fair, Wright was voted his degree under a previous administration before I became professor of New Testament. And he was voted that degree when he was simply another conservative Church of England prelate of the sort we used to court. (A few of these are still in the pipeline!) But a number of things have changed. Not only are there a new administration and a new NT professor, but Wright has since retired as bishop and found a job at an under-funded Scottish university anxious to attract young full-fee-paying American Evangelical men questing for old-world cultural capital. My only consolation is that the embarrassment of Wright’s honorary degree was overshadowed by the even greater debacle of the stridently propagandistic Eric Metaxas, who was tapped to speak at this semester’s convocation. Sewanee seriously needs to rethink is honorary degrees. I am afraid that after last week they will bring a little less honor.

Sincerely,

Paul Holloway

N.T. Wright seriously proposes - as a “scholar”, not as a theologian - that the best historical explanation of the alleged empty tomb and the alleged post-mortem appearances of Jesus is … the resurrection. Color me surprised.

Now, I don’t object to anyone believing in anything, I certainly don’t object to theologians defending the resurrection. But as theologians, not as alleged scholars. One can make a leap of faith and say that yeah, this shows us that Jesus rose from the dead.

One cannot say that “the best historical explanation … [is that] Jesus was indeed seen alive, because he was truly raised from the dead”. Such conclusions are outside of the realm of history. I must therefore conclude that Wright is a hack, if not worse.

Agreed. I completely separate my understandings of pre & post crucifiction Jesus. One is historical and can be understood in the context of 1st century proto-rabbinic Judaism. The other is purely a creature of faith.

The Bible is not science text or a biography or a history. It consists of a New and Old Testament.

A testament is a statement of faith. It contains facts and statements, but only those that serve to support one’s point of view on why one believes in something.

Until people learn this distinction they will continue to conflate faith with reason, science, history and objective observation.

You how there’s been talk in DC of sending mortar-spotting radars to Ukraine, and I said it was a bad idea because it would end up with the tech in Russian hands?

Well, three of those radar set were sent to Ukraine, and what I feared has come to pass:

Artillery: Russia Grabs American Gear In Ukraine

March 17, 2015: The Russians have captured an American ground radar in Ukraine. In November 2014 the United States flew in the first three (of twenty) AN/TPQ-48 portable (69 kg/150 pounds) mortar spotting radars, along with American personnel to quickly train Ukrainian troops on how to use it. With a range of 6,000 meters these radars and their computers can quickly locate where the mortars firing shells are as soon as the radar spots the shells in flight. Some of these radars were in sent to eastern Ukraine by the end of 2015 where Ukrainian troops were facing Russian backed rebels as well as Russian troops. In late January 2015 the Russians broke the ceasefire and launched another offensive. Ukrainian troops were forced back in some areas and the Russians claimed to have captured one of the AN/TPQ-48 systems and publicized the incident.

How long have you used Dvorak? And how long did it take to get used to switching from qwerty?

I haven’t used Dvorak myself, but I suspect the adjustment isn’t that difficult. When I was younger and doing consulting work across Europe, I often ran into different keyboard configurations - Germany, Italy, Holland - and there were slight differences…once I figured those out I was able to type full speed.

Most of the classroom computers here default to taking keyboard inputs as pinyin cues for Chinese characters. I’ll be halfway through a word before I see what’s going on and have to switch to English input.

I switched four years ago from QWERTY as a summer exercise to speed up my typing. It’s really great at speed. The biggest hurdle is every keyboard in the US being QWERTY by default, so I had to learn how to switch to Dvorak on any machine I’m using. It took about two weeks with a typing training software.

The funny thing is watching people try to type on a keyboard after I’ve switched it over and forgot to switch it back.

It also makes me look like a hunt-and-peck typist when I’m using an unfamiliar QWERTY keyboard. :)

He also looks like Doogie Howzer; hard to believe he’s even 25, but he’s very good, thorough.

I had an experience with an ear specialist a few years ago like this. Guy looked fresh out of college, but listened, explained what was going on and was cordial and really took time on the appointment, which is usually not a thing with the specialists I’ve been to.

The best class I ever took in high school was typing. It would be years before I ever did any real typing but the mechanics were still there. My wife wanted to do it in her high school but they had no typing class. It was a foofy high school and they assumed their grads would have secretaries to do the typing for them.
Say what you want about QWERTY, but as far as I’m concerned, it’s good enough. I also don’t understand what the typewriter origins have to do with the criticism. If the layout was intended to keep the letters from jamming, one would think it would also keep your fingers from interfering with each other also.

re: #254 darthstar

Wow. That’s some really weird shit.

Yes, I have seen Randy Quaid’s penis. I have watched Randy Quaid perform cunnilingus on his wife. I have watched Randy Quaid receive a blow job. I have watched Randy Quaid choke his wife with a belt while she brings herself to orgasm. And I have lived to tell the tale.

From the camera mounted on his desk, we see him wordlessly grab a GoPro and proceed to his wife on the bed. He pulls off her bikini bottoms and goes down on her. At least, it appears so. The bill of his hat blocks much of the action until Evi takes it off and puts it on her own head. Randy’s face just sits there, wedged between her legs with hardly any movement. Is he alive? Is he breathing? Are there lingual acrobatics going on under his massive beard? It is entirely unclear, just as it is unclear if his wife is deriving any pleasure from it, as she makes nary a sound.

Speaking of sound, the whole time that this is happening, their dog, who is right there in the room with them, is barking in the background. Incessantly. Gratingly. I cannot emphasize enough how completely awful it is to listen to and yet they seem completely impervious to it. That is truly the most unbelievable thing about this video — not the weird sex or paranoid rantings, but the fact that they do not tell that dog to shut up.

Then comes the erotic asphyxiation scene. Evi ties a belt around her neck, says something about autoerotic asphyxiation and how that was how David Carradine “supposedly” died, and then tells Randy, “Let’s pretend we’re doing that.” But first, she asks Randy to come up with a safety word.

Randy: “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”

Evi: “That’s too long a safety word. How about ‘Rupert’?”

Randy: “Okay, Rupe.”

Then she starts up the vibrator and Randy, responding to the dog who is, of course, still barking, says, “I’d like to strangle that dog.” (Most relatable moment of the whole film.) Eventually, her face turns kind of red and she seemingly orgasms while moaning, “Ah, Rupert. Ah, Rupert.”

It’s about as nuts as it sounds. They yell at each other a bunch, particularly about what they’re wearing and whether their outfits are suitable, given the subject at hand. Then, seemingly resolved on that particular debate, she gives him a blow job while he wears a Murdoch mask. Then he pretends to give her a blow job while she wears a Murdoch mask and pretends to smoke a joint. Naturally, the dog is barking once again.

I have but one question after sitting through the entire 72 minutes of those videos: Where is my hazard pay?

On the other hand, a couple of my graduates have fallen into specialized translation jobs just because they are only one in their office who has any English skills. Excellent performances from the very hawt Gillian Anderson, as work-obsessed DCS Gibson, on loan in Belfast from the Met for this case, and also by Jamie Dornan as a serial killer, is very much worth seeing.

In one scene, Gibson is having a brief conversation with ACC Jim Burns, with whom she once had a fling. He says, “You don’t realize what kind of effect you have on men” and said he would have left his wife, his kids, everything, for her.

She replied, “It would have been a mistake.”

Andrea Mitchell ‏@mitchellreports
In 1st interview since election Netanyahu backs off opposition to Palestinian state after White House threat

I’ll refer to what I stated previously about Netanyahu. No matter what position he staked out, he’s going to piss off a significant portion of Israelis. No 2-state solution? That pisses off the Israeli left, and further alienates Israeli Arabs, to say nothing of the Palestinians and other Arab countries (though some actually benefit from the status quo or ongoing conflict since it means more influence on Palestinians and/or as a source for cannon fodder).

Accept 2-state solution? The same Israeli right that chose him because he’s “strong on defense” will now fret that the guy turned around and stabbed them in the back because he’s going to go and cut a deal with the folks he was demonizing the day before.

Fact is and remains that Netanyahu says and does anything to remain in power. Whether he can actually cut a peace deal is entirely besides the point. His only mission was reelection, and in that he succeeded.

I still don’t see him as the Israeli leader who can achieve a peace deal, or even engage in a disengagement a la Sharon. Instead, he’s going to continue fumbling along with the status quo and will find himself with another conflict with Hamas before long that undermines his whole “strong on Israel’s security” bit. His record to date is not different than Kadima. Both suffered through conflicts with Hamas that had mixed outcomes.

Largest cities in US:

1) NYC (D)
2) LA (D)
3) Chicago (D)

And keep going down the list: Dallas (D); Austin (D); Raleigh (D); San Jose (D); San Francisco (D); San Antonio (D); Phoenix (D); etc.

There are some cities with independent or nonpartisan mayors, but of the big cities, Miami has a GOPer for Mayor.

Of course, I know the point - he wants more spending on nuclear inventory, which means less money for social programs and anything else non-military related.

We’d just have to ignore that the USAF has ordered itself a pair of hanger queens - the F-22 and F-35 (which also provides hanger queens to the USMC and USN) that are unable to do the jobs that they were intended, but sure are pretty to look at.

Meanwhile, the USAF wants to send the A-10 to the Boneyard, even though there’s nothing else in the inventory that can do what it does. Nothing. It isn’t glamorous like the F-16 or F-15, let alone the F-22, but it can put lethal force on the enemy at close range in a way that no other aircraft can in the US inventory.

The B-52 has outlasted every attempt to retire it, because it is a perfect design. It carries more than other aircraft, can do standoff launches, can drop massive amounts of ordnance, and while it lacks stealth, it isn’t nearly the hanger queen that the B-2 is either. The B-1 might have speed over the B-52, but it too lacks the ability to put volume of weapons on target.

Heck, the design is such that they could tack new engines and avionics to it, and it’ll be good to go for another generation.

Remind them Columbus Ohio is run by Democrats.

Mayor Greg Coleman has been mayor since 2000. He could probably remain mayor, but at 60 he has decided to retire as the mayor. Good chance City Council President Andrew J. Ginther will be elected mayor this November, or it might be Sheriff Zach Scott…both Democrats.

By the way…Coleman was also City Council President for two terms before becoming Mayor.

Economy, infrastructure, jobs in Columbus…all doing fine by today’s economic standards.

The last few elections the Republicans have basically run token candidates knowing they get clobbered. They might have a slight chance this time, but with Coleman pushing hard for Ginther and Ginther never screwing up anything, the Repubs will have a hard challenge.

What did they call those “company towns” in which the workers rented their homes from the employer and bought stuff on credit at the “employee store”. They would have their “charges” deducted from their paycheck and be left in debt at the end of the pay period.

This is the current state of most minimum-wage employees these days. Only the debtor is a hospital or Visa.

That woman seems to be laboring under several delusions. For one, the nukes actually did fall near Charleston, but back in 1958 (Tybee Island). And it was Eisenhower as president, and it was an accidental air-collision.

And Truman had to deal with the Admiral’s revolt. (primarily because Truman canceled the USS United States aircraft carrier project, and intraservice rivalries meant that those funds went to the USAF, not the USN).

Not Obama.

GWB had a bunch of generals go off on Rumsfeld though.

Again, not Obama.

In other interesting news, I finally completed Shelby Foote’s Civil War trilogy, all via audio CD, with Grover Gardner the narrator.

It’s quite a fascinating level of detail, and I learned a lot about different battles and various generals. Pretty amazing the writers who can pull all this information together and transform it into narrative form.

That being said, it’s an account heavily weighted towards the South. Not so much the tone of it, just the amount of material dedicated to telling about its generals and people. The tone is pretty even keel, even though Foote’s sympathies seem rather clear. I got pretty winded of it towards the end and skipped through some sections.

Anyway, I’ve probably heard as much about the Confederacy as I care to for a while and feel a need to delve back into some Lincoln- Grant-Sherman-Sheridan material to compensate.

The narrative reflects the general run of civil war historical literature at the time Foote did his research. I could directly connect some of his prose to corresponding sections of a book of Gettysburg at that time. The general more union-centric counterpoint to Foote would be to read Bruce Catton’s trilogy from roughly the same time period.

If you want a one volume treatment of the war and causes MacPherson’s _Battle Cry of Freedom_ is probably your best bet. And there are probably enough ACW readers here you could get recommendations regarding the various facets and campaigns if you are interested in any particular event.

Yeah I’ve got a number of ACW books, including McPherson’s although haven’t read it. As much as I like having the actual physical form of a book, e-readers and audio CD’s have been my best means of actually digesting the written word. You’re right as to the time period Foote was writing in and how the ACW was academically as well as popularly portrayed for many years. One of the few instances I think where the winners didn’t actually write the history(ies), or at least not most of them, for many years.

It makes me want to have one. I promise to love it and hug it forever and ever! Also, so would the dogs…of whom I would not trust with a stuffed one, let alone a live one. Seriously, though, that little thing is totes adorbs!

This incident indicates the extent to which we are going from a society where people are called on to help each other in need to a society that throws people to the wolves.

And I want a corgi. Two of my coworkers bring theirs to the office. Very sweet, charming dogs.

My cats might have a problem with me getting a dog, though. Heh.

I loved my old corgi. One of the best dogs I ever had. Other than his penchant for eating my cucumbers off the vine. He left everything else in the garden alone, but would grab a cucumber off the vine, throw it around, bite it in half, maybe eat some of it, and then leave it laying there.

Have I mentioned how much I love my sister?

heh. I had a dog that did the same thing. She would stroll down to 100-foot row of cucumbers, inspecting each one. When she got to the end of the row, she’d turn around, give one long glance down the row, then run to pick her preferred selection.
She also liked to dig up potatoes.

The “south fumbled the war while the Union won via attrition” theory was still in the ascendant when Foote was writing. Also know as “The Freeman School” since that the main historian who’d written the authoritative biography of R E Lee along with a subsequent volume on Lee’s generals. Others built on his work and there was a solid Lee-Jackson focus on the ACW for a number of decades.

The South missed some opportunities and squandered some resources. The missed opportunities are a feature of almost any war between sides that were anywhere near being evenly matched. The squandering mostly arose out of the militant and uncompromising martial culture of the South. Who but a coward would settle for hemming in a Yankee position and starving it out or in some other way vitiating its influence on the wider war, when there was a prospect of driving the hated bluecoats off the ridge and into the river or sea or something?

The answer just wouldn’t occur to them.

There’s even a book.

Attack and Die: Civil War Military Tactics and the Southern Heritage Paperback - July 30, 1984
by Grady McWhiney (Author), Perry D. Jamieson (Author)

From the ad text:

In the first twenty-seven months of combat 175,000 Southern soldiers died. This number was more than the entire Confederate military force in the summer of 1861, and it far exceeded the strength of any army that Lee ever commanded. More than 80,000 Southerners fell in just five battles. At Gettysburg three out of every ten Confederates present were hit; one brigade lost 65 percent of its men and 70 percent of its field officers in a single charge. A North Carolina regiment started the action with some 800 men; only 216 survived unhurt. Another unit lost two-thirds of its men as well as its commander in a brief assault.”
Why did the Confederacy lose so many men? The authors contend that the Confederates bled themselves nearly to death in the first three years of the war by making costly attacks more often than the Federals. Offensive tactics, which had been used successfully by Americans in the Mexican War, were much less effective in the 1860s because an improved weapon - the rifle - had given increased strength to defenders. This book describes tactical theory in the 1850s and suggests how each related to Civil War tactics. It also considers the development of tactics in all three arms of the service during the Civil War.
In examining the Civil War the book separates Southern from Northern tactical practice and discusses Confederate military history in the context of Southern social history. Although the Southerners could have offset their numerical disadvantage by remaining on the defensive and forcing the Federals to attack, they failed to do so. The authors argue that the Southerners’ consistent favoring of offensive warfare was attributable, in large measure, to their Celtic heritage: they fought with the same courageous dash and reckless abandon that had characterized their Celtic forebears since ancient times. The Southerners of the Civil War generation were prisoners of their social and cultural history: they attacked courageously and were killed - on battlefields so totally defended by the Federals that “not even a chicken could get through.”
