Did Obama “Suggest Mandatory Voting?” A: No.

This is one of those media distortions that makes me nuts, as CNN pushes the absolutely false meme that President Obama said anything like, “Maybe it’s time for mandatory voting.” Notice that the CNN headline attributes these words directly to Obama — but he never said them.

Their own video clip shows what a ridiculous distortion this is; Obama is saying we should make voting easier, not make it “mandatory.” Yes, he mentions Australia where voting is mandatory, but only to make the point that it would be transformative if more people voted in the US. It’s a hypothetical statement. He didn’t advocate, call for, or even “suggest” making voting mandatory in the US.

But if the President was trolling the right with this statement, it worked. They’re all foaming at the mouth about this today.

To people who think that too many of the “wrong” people can vote and want to impose restrictions on voting like owning property, the suggestion that voting should be easier is enough to send one into a frothing rage.

He did a great job trolling them but he’s absolutely right. It needs to be easier not harder to vote and it’s easy to see why the GOP/right has a problem with that. They know that they’re fucked with higher turnouts and hell Paul Weyrich even admitted as such 35 years ago and GOP/right wing actions 35 years ago while not showing the directness of Weyrich echo that sentiment.

I once knew of a case where a teenager was found hanged behind his house (one of my bandmates lived a few houses over and saw the body hanging up). It was ruled a suicide. (not making a judgment on this case at all, just noting that something did happen similar where I grew up).

Also, I note the man’s name is Byrd. Dark satire that it reminded me of the James Byrd case in Texas.

Dunno about Australia. But so what if it was mandatory? All you need to make that fair for everyone is include a none of the above or conscientious objector checkbox. You still undergo the process, mail or whatever. But you don’r ever have to actually vote against your will. Which might soften some legal issues with the idea.

Right but yes, they will always look for any outrage and the reason for that is simple is because they have no constructive ideas of their own and they know feeding anti-Obama outrage is the only way to distract from that.

56 Rev_Arthur_Icantbreatheing  Mar 20, 2015 11:25:57am

So in addition to the anti-vaxxers angle on autism, now they’re trying to grift on the diet angle:
Autism-Busting Paleo Book for Babies Pulled Because It Will Kill Them

Here’s some news that might come as a big surprise to you: A baby cookbook book called Bubba Yum Yum written by a TV chef, a mommy blogger and a naturopath may not be as safe as previously thought. Sure, it might stop your baby from developing autism, but only because your baby will be dead. (Better dead than neuroatypical, though, right?) (Wasn’t that the anti-communist slogan back in the 50s?)

Wonkette reports that the book, which was already written and ready for publication, has been shelved forever due to safety concerns. Australian TV Chef Pete Evans and his co-authors first raised red flags when they suggested that instead of feeding a baby formula, which has “too many chemicals,” parents should create their own baby food from “chicken liver and bone broth,” which sounds delicious, but holds more than ten times the maximum Vitamin A that a baby can take, making it a toxic concoction that would likely hurt one’s baby. But hey, at least the child wouldn’t be autistic, right? That would be horrible.

Fortunate that the book won’t be printed, at least in this format.

There’s no reasonable perspective that CNN’s paraphrase of Obama was accurate. It just flat out wasn’t. I tend to be circumspect about scapegoating media - but it’s a bit hard for me to believe that wasn’t a deliberate attempt at being misleading (I’d guess most likely to sensationalize as opposed to pursue a political agenda).

I have long believed that our government is preparing re-education camps for “dissidents”, people who dare exercise their First Amendment rights and actually speak their minds instead of the dribble and bile they want us to buy.

Hillary now confrims with her Camp for Adults idea. Though not calling them “Re-Education Camps” that is without a doubt the contents of the bubble floating over her head.

Fortunate that the book won’t be printed, at least in this format.

Unfortunately, thanks to self-publishing it will be available as an e-book, or if they use CreateSpace or LuLu or something similar, a printed book.

High School Punishes Student President For Allowing Arabic Translation Of Pledge Of Allegiance

thinkprogress.org

“A New York high school is mired in controversy this week after a student delivered the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic, sparking outrage among classmates and locals who believe the pledge should only be delivered in English.

“According to the Times Herald-Record, Pine Bush High School opened their announcements on Wednesday morning by allowing a student to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic, part of the school’s celebration of National Foreign Language Week. But students say the pledge, which was broadcast over the school’s intercom, resulted in “catcalls and angry denunciations” in several classrooms and online.

“The pledge should always be said in English,” one student tweeted. “They could’ve just said ‘Good Morning’ in a different language each day.”

“Local members of the American Legion, a veterans organization, also blasted the decision.” More

They’re pledging allegiance to the US. Not to AQ. Not to some foreign country, but in the language they know. How is that supposed to be a bad thing?

Weren’t they complaining that Muslims living in the US (though in reality not all Arabs are Muslims, and not all Muslims are Arab) needed to show support of the US?

Should be knowable. I don’t have a calibrated sense of the depth of Senator Cotton’s stupidity yet.

First of all, he didn’t say we should triple defense spending. So, to me, the rest is questionable.

The Arkansas Republican took to the Senate floor Monday — the ink barely dry on his controversial open letter to Iran — to advocate dramatic increases in defense spending, citing the rise of “Islamic terrorism, Iranian aggression, Russian revisionism, and Chinese adventurism” on the president’s watch.

While Obama has proposed raising spending on defense to $534 billion and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Jack Reed (D-R.I.) advocated a budget of $577 billion, Cotton said the U.S. needs north of $611 billion to manage a world he said had “grown gravely darker” since Obama took office.

Donors had role in Aaron Schock’s 2014 property deal

chicagotribune.com

“The 2014 deal, which occurred after the congressman’s most recent financial report, raises new questions about Schock’s pattern of repeated reliance on campaign contributors. Political donors built, sold and financed a house owned by Schock in suburban Peoria. Donors also were involved in the sale and financing of a Peoria apartment complex in which Schock invests.

“According to tax and county land records obtained by the Peoria Journal Star and reviewed by the AP, a company managed by Schock paid $300,000 last May to buy a commercial property owned by Jeff Green, a wealthy Peoria car dealer who has contributed at least $12,000 to the Illinois Republican’s congressional campaigns and who still owns a larger land tract next to Schock’s. The lawmaker then signed a mortgage application with a local Peoria bank for $600,000 — twice the listed price of the property now owned by his Illinois company, Menards Peoria LLC. Its headquarters was listed as Schock’s home in Peoria.” More

Also, read about Schock’s personal photographer:

I have long believed that our government is preparing re-education camps for “dissidents”, people who dare exercise their First Amendment rights and actually speak their minds instead of the dribble and bile they want us to buy.

Hillary now confrims with her Camp for Adults idea. Though not calling them “Re-Education Camps” that is without a doubt the contents of the bubble floating over her head.
