New York Times Dumps “Race Realist” Writer With History of Writing for White Nationalist Sites

“Race realism”
Media • Views: 32,285

On Wednesday, Gawker’s J.K. Trotter exposed the history of Razib Khan, newly hired by the New York Times as a science writer: New Times Op-Ed Writer Has a Colorful Past With Racist Publications.

It seems Mr. Khan has a habit of writing “race realism” articles for white nationalist websites such as Takimag and VDARE.

(“Race realism” is the phrase dirtbag racists use to describe themselves these days, in a feeble, transparent attempt to give a scientific veneer to their bigotry. It relies on discredited pseudo-science to argue that African Americans are less intelligent than Caucasians for genetic reasons.)

Well, it’s good to know that people who write for Takimag and VDARE are still persona non grata at the New York Times, although we might ask why the Times didn’t vet Mr. Khan in the first place: New York Times Signs Contract Writer Razib Khan, Then Dumps Him.

In a statement released by spokeswoman Eileen Murphy this morning, the New York Times has signaled that it is severing its recently inked relationship with Razib Khan:

After reviewing the full body of Razib Khan’s work, we are no longer comfortable using him as a regular, periodic contributor. We remain open to consideration of submissions from him to our op-Ed pages, both in print and online.

And of course, look who’s sticking up for Razib Khan and his white nationalist connections:

PhD student in genetics and cats who’s written for some pretty high end magazines in the past. It was a “contributor” position along with 19 other people, so they probably didn’t do as much due diligence. And it’s not like they didn’t hire Bloody Bill Kristol for a while.

Because he’s got a resumé of writing for publications like Slate and The Atlantic. Some of these “race realist” creeps are incredibly sneaky, and Khan is very careful to avoid openly racist language in his articles while still promoting the sick idea that African Americans are less intelligent than whites for genetic reasons.

Between this hire and last week’s handling of the “bombshell” story that began “Emailghazigate,” one might almost get the impression that the people in charge of doing research at the Times are slacking off.

10 lawhawk  Mar 20, 2015 1:00:46pm

I’m shocked. Shocked that Chuckles is out there defending Khan and spreading his noxious commentary all at the same time. But don’t call him a racist, because that makes you a racist.

I’ll be blunt. Chuckles is a racist. And an addled one at that. Whether it’s the drugs, alcohol, or auto-erotic asphyxia (and I’m just asking the questions), I cannot say, nor rule out. I’m not like former Senator Frist who can identify and treat patients from video/photographs alone.

First, a Style writer uses alt med loon Joe Mercola to justify his science-ignorant “Apple Watch will give you cancer” idiocy.

Today, it turns out the NYT has a science writer who’s an ignorant racist.

It’s like someone keeps daring this NY Times to completely fuck up their reputation for rational science reporting, and the paper’s going “Challenge accepted!”

12 Justanotherhuman  Mar 20, 2015 1:01:17pm

re: #5 Charles Johnson

Thanks. I would have thought a paper like the NYT would have vetted anyone a little better than they did, esp since he had published in mainline stuff like that. Surely they must have also heard something about this guy.

It’s not like the NYT is the Podunk Press or something…

And that’s why so many Jews don’t trust the GOP. When you say something like that you ignore that Jewish Americans are more than single issue voters; that there are important issues besides Israel that don’t comport with GOP positions.

Like equal rights and equal protection under the law. The GOP has undermined the CRA and VRA, but many Jews see those laws as essential protections of civil rights - for all Americans.

Trying to distill all Jewish support down to where it’s support for Israel ignores all the other issues, let alone that Democrats have also been strong supporters of Israel.

The GOP has repeatedly spun efforts by the Obama Administration as being anti-Israel, but the record simply doesn’t bear this out. Obama extended additional assistance last year to let Israel roll out more Iron Dome batteries, and has not forced Israel to resume talks with the Palestinians (even though nearly every Admin in the last 40 years has attempted a peace initiative to burnish their legacies, whether the parties wanted it or not). Obama hasn’t even clashed with the Israeli govt over settlement construction, which was a regular feature of the 1980s and into the 1990s (which should tell you that 1) settlements aren’t an impediment to a peace process, and 2) Israel isn’t being pressured into stopping the settlements with the loan guarantees and other economic measures that the US has used in past disputes over Israel’s reticence over resuming/starting a peace process).

Obama doesn’t want Iran getting nukes (and he’s far more hawkish on trying to get to zero nukes - he’s a true-believe on nonproliferation), so claiming that his negotiations would result in Iran’s nuclearization ignores that the GOP has no alternative other than the “harsher sanctions” that they can’t specify in any way that makes sense.

About the only thing someone can point to as being even somewhat against Israel’s interest is that the US still has not renewed a memo of understanding that allows Israel access to oil reserves in a crisis (even though it has never been called upon since the memo of understanding was created 35 years ago).

That might have been the discussion, but its not what Lane was saying:

LANE: What the heck. So I’m going to say, first of all, I agree with my colleagues to this extent, he says it’s low income people who aren’t voting, and then threatens them with a fine, right, if they continue to not vote and that seems a little strange to impose further burdens on the… whatever.

But actually, there is a problem in this country with voter participation. We do vote at a much lower rate than a lot of other democracies, but there’s so many other things we could do to make voting easier and cheaper, starting with putting it on a Sunday, or making it a national holiday, increasing direct mail voting, a whole lot of other… automatic registration… a whole lot of other measures which may not be popular at this table, but would increase participation before you start threatening people with compulsory voting.

I just can’t understand how people go along with this voter suppression bullshit. Our long-time Secretary of State in Washington, Sam Reed, was admittedly a Republican, but he did everything possible to make it easy for people to register and to vote, culminating in the current statewide vote-by-mail system. Maximizing participation was a declared goal of all sides for so long that I don’t know how people can switch their mental gears so fast.

Shouldn’t the teabaggers, who are outsiders “fighting the system” according to them, be the most afraid of being excluded, whether there’s any chance of that or not?

I know why the GOP pols and plutocrats want to limit the vote—they know low turnout helps them. But they publicly deny that, and I thought we were supposed to take everything they say as gospel?

78 Targetpractice  Mar 20, 2015 2:22:16pm

And I agree with him totally. Mandatory voting should be a last resort, because there are so many other things we could try to bring up voter participation rates. First amongst them is making the day a mandatory paid holiday for all workers, so that the poor don’t feel as if they have to choose between a paycheck and a vote.

They’re big fans of it, as long as it works in their favor. Any chance of giving “the enemy” an advantage must be stopped.

And on that note, the one major thing that REALLY pisses me off about Republicans: Democrats should not be “the enemy”. We are all Americans. Fuck this partisan, I’ll-kill-the-country-if-I-don’t-get-my-way bullshit. Man up and learn to compromise in the name of American patriotism.

2. After you have removed the spines, use a sharp knife to score crosshatch in the paddle from the round end toward the base, about 1/3 inch apart, being careful not to cut through the base. (This not only makes them look pretty after grilling but helps to speed the cooking process and to reduce some of the mucilage from the pads.)

The last time I dealt with fresh nopales pads, the quantity of mucilage was overwhelming.

Updated: Mar 20, 2015 4:55 PM CDT
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) — Three Fort Lauderdale Police officers have been fired and another has resigned after an internal affairs investigation uncovered an extensive exchange of racially-insensitive material among the law enforcers.

Addressing reporters Friday afternoon, Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Frank Adderley said the investigation revealed 31-year-old Officer Jason Holding, 25-year-old Officer Christopher Sousa and 29-year-old Officer James Wells have been terminated. A fourth officer, 22-year-old Alex Alvarez, has tendered his resignation of his own accord.

Adderley said the officers engaged in “sustained department misconduct and … conduct unbecoming of a police officer” which “involved racist text message exchange among themselves.”

To these people America is a religion.

It’s an impossible situation. You can’t regard America as a voluntary association, if you can be born a member or excluded based on which side of a line you were born on. Every effort to turn “American” into a nationality, though, founders on the very ridiculousness of the concept.

Even in 1787, when everyone but British, Scots/Irish, and German could be ignored, it was an impossible circle to square. Now, it’s just insanity.

If you’re one of those people who has to divide up the world into “us” vs. “them”, there’s no way that line will ever divide “American” from “Everybody else”. It will always divide “My Kind of American” from “The Wrong Kind of American + Everybody Else”.

15 weeks+ based on years of service, which is very generous to newer employees. Losing your job is always hard, but this package is going to be a big help to people transitioning to new jobs or retirement. If they had to let people go, this is a kind way to do it.

Here’s an interesting defense of Khan, from Ben Goldacre’s Bad Science forum (de-linked from his main site some time ago because of some pretty nasty posts that mysteriously got a 300-page thread ‘lost,’ but that’s a long story…) :

This is utterly mental. Khan does write for odd places, but his blogging is strictly evidence based, yet somehow some morons on the internet interpret highlighting genetic differences between populations as being racist.

Read the comments on that gawker piece. Alternates between scientific illiteracy denying any difference due to genetics, and scientific illiteracy stating black people are stupid, because genetics.

Khan’s had a blog on population genetics since the early days of science blogging and was one of the regulars at scienceblogs. He’s been around for years without any significant controversy following him, other than the usual differences of opinion.

…he absolutely does not go beyond highlighting genetic differences, his interpretations might lean to one conclusion or the other that other people may disagree with for sound reasons, but not beyond the evidence.

Incidentally, the charge that writing for Taki means somebody should be sacked has political repercussions in Britain. Where a certain American citizen was notorious for publishing and defending Taki for articles which were explicitly racist. That citizen is Boris Johnson.

I managed to write some really cool implementations this week. Made me feel like I legit earned that certification.

I will devolve into techno-babble here, under a cut for Lizards who don’t care. :)

The app has fragments nested in fragments (hah) and those sub-fragments had specific menu options available. Unfortunately, as the user was swiping between them, the update of the menu options at the top was delayed by about 2-3 seconds - long enough that you could click on a menu option that no longer applied to the current view. Also, it just looked fucking sloppy. Not even StackOverflow yielded answers that worked.

I hated having to move the menu items out of the fragment because that loses some of the reuseability that they are supposed to support (by having all parts relevant to the fragment in the fragment, as opposed to the hosting activity) BUT the user experience is much better for having done so. I already had something that was updating information back in the host activity (so that I knew which view was active in the nested fragment) so it was easy enough to add things to its menu set as invisible and then toggle the appropriate visibility commands so that it appears instantaneous instead of with the delay.

This ignores the 30 minutes wasted because findItem() and getItem() both return menuItems but one searches by id and one searches by index and if you get them confused it is bad.

And then another 20 minutes because I commented out one line of code, not realizing how it interacted with the rest.

I’m only lookin’ at you for saying ‘Here’s an interesting defense of Khan’, for whom I don’t think there is a defense.

Uhhh…in the context of how they’re a bunch of really nice people whose incredibly nasty postings about people they don’t like (in this case a doctor) led their leader to all but kick them off his website. They were defending him, and, yes, I found that very interesting, especially since they’re such a bunch of swell chaps whose views (fairly garden variety ‘skeptic’) are generally in line with what most would consider sane (i.e. pro-science, not anti-vax, not climate change deniers, anti-creationist, etc. etc.).

Apologies if that wasn’t clear.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Out on the presidential campaign trail, Gov. Scott Walker has left “Wiscahnsin” back home in Wisconsin. He now wants to strengthen the economy, not the “ecahnahmy.” And while he once had the “ahnor” of meeting fellow Republicans, he told one group here this week that he simply enjoyed “talkin’ with y’all.”

The classic Upper Midwest accent - nasal and full of flat a’s - is one of several Walker trademarks to have fallen away this month after an intense period of strategizing and coaching designed to help Mr. Walker capitalize on his popularity in early polls and show that he is not some provincial politician out of his depth.

He is tailoring his pitch to his audiences — wearing pullover sweaters in earth-tone colors in one early primary state, New Hampshire, and discussing the power of prayer in another, here in South Carolina.

good freaking grief…

Right. Like so:

Our application is a fairly substantial business sales and service app that the client’s field associates use to record their service calls. I managed to take the central feature of our application - the data-driven protocol that the field associates follow - and create a flexible, self-updating tree structure that will basically take all the work out of writing the UI elements. All we have to do now is walk the tree, render the items, and the self-updating structure is smart enough to refresh only the elements that change as the user records their responses.

They decided to kick the can down the road. They did not assign the matchmakers at the Mosque anyone more recent than who applied in November.

So, since Fatemeh has stated she feels like a dead end in Iran, and wishing things could work, I may find a way to get her a job here.

And I am really close to writing the article on how the Muslim Community is failing in helping converts find someone. Or more simply, I will be pulling an Oswald. I will get their attention.

You say that, but this is beyond frustrating. I am the only person in my group of friends that is not in a relationship. Hell, most of them are married, and 2 or 3 of them have kids. Meanwhile, friends are beginning to dwindle, and I need a support structure, as my family won’t really function as such.

Purely from a logical standpoint, I need something, and I have fallen through the cracks most everyone. I really do want to marry within my faith.

Make friends. I know, I make it sound so easy, but as someone who is painfully shy and introverted in the extreme, I know it’s important for mental health and balance. A spouse is a full-time job, even if it’s a fun one. It is not a vacation.

If I as someone who also has Asperger’s and knows the pains and frustrations of the romance game. I have to agree with the suggestions made. I know it can be frustrating watching friends and other acquaintances find love and settle down but love and marriage should never be rushed. And I have to agree also that your standards for the right woman are too rigid. I know it’s important for you to marry a fellow Muslim but at the same time, the focus ought to be on someone makes you happy and vice versa. I know ASperger’s is tough but you’ll enjoy life much more if you don’t let society peer pressure you. I know easier said than done.

It’s not been a good day, Lizards.

In the space of maybe two hours, I got the news that Twisted Sister’s drummer, AJ Pero, passed away this morning. Then I found out that an old friend from NYC’s Bitter End club, a guy who gave my band a shot when just about no one else would, also passed away today.

I was talking to a friend, and he made the observation that it’s not our aunts and uncles passing away now, it’s our friends.

I feel sad and old today. The snow does not help.

This makes no sense at all.

It makes perfect sense if you’re a bigot like Laura who knows her audience.

The last time I dealt with fresh nopales pads, the quantity of mucilage was overwhelming.

It’s actually pretty good if you boil it first.

re: #5 Charles Johnson

I don’t think the idea is totally sick. I don’t think blacks area the position the because of their genes (is it likely hundreds of years of enforced terrorism, torture slavery, limited education and employment opportunists and negative propaganda will all be cleared up in a few generations?) but I’m willing to explore ideas even those that may be used by disgusting people.
Most of the people who believe this are racist though.
They tend to have a deep dislike and contempt of blacks that they won’t challenge so look to ways to justify it.

re: #178 Three Chord Monty

Apologies if that wasn’t clear.

Sorry if I misinterpreted ‘interesting’.
