The James O’Keefe Scandal Gets Worse: Ex-Staffer Says He Crossed a Line With Vile ‘Kill Cops’ Stunt

Right wing undercover incitement
Wingnuts • Views: 32,504

I have to confess that I’m totally unsurprised by the latest news on James O’Keefe’s creepy subterfuge: Ex-Staffer Slams James O’Keefe: He Crossed a Line With Vile ‘Kill Cops’ Stunt.

Richard Valdes, the former director of special operations for O’Keefe’s organization Project Veritas, told TPM on Thursday that the guerrilla filmmaker wanted an undercover operative to infiltrate a rally held by the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network in mid-January. At the time, Black Lives Matter demonstrators were still taking to the streets of New York City to protest a grand jury’s decision not to indict an NYPD officer in the chokehold death of Eric Garner.

Valdes said O’Keefe dictated a script to him and then told him to email it to the operative for use at the rally. Here’s the full text of that script, according to emails provided to TPM by Valdes’ attorney:

As a minority and a Muslim, I know what it’s like when the police treat me unfairly. They have even searched my little daughter’s body. Can you believe that? Do you know what it’s like to have your rights violated because of the color of your skin or because of your name? -PAUSE-

Sometimes, I wish I could just kill some of these cops. Don’t you just wish we could have one of the cops right here in the middle of our group? -PAUSE-

What would you do if we could get Officer Pantoleo (who killed Eric Garner) right here in this crowd? What would you do to him?

In a Jan. 9 email addressed to Valdes, O’Keefe, and other top Project Veritas employees, the undercover operative, Mohammed Alhomsi, apparently declined to carry out the assignment. The email cited both legal concerns and concerns about the language of the script in turning down the project. That email was among those provided to TPM by Valdes’s attorney.

There are times I really laugh at the fear that some people choose to live with on a daily basis.

Up until the point where they choose to vote or legislate based on that.

It worked for O’Reilly; no wonder O’Keefe is trying to copy him.

Crossed a line? No shit. O’Keefe’s made a career out of this and no one in right wing political circles calls him and his gang of assholes out on it.

Dirty tricks have been part of their tactics for years.

Segretti’s involvement in the “Canuck letter” typifies the tactics Segretti and others working with him used, forging a letter ascribed to Senator Edmund Muskie which maligned the people, language and culture of French Canada and French Canadians, causing the soon to be Democratic presidential candidate Muskie considerable headaches in denying the letter and having to continue dealing with the issue. Many historians have indicated over the years that Muskie’s withdrawal from the Presidential primaries was at least partly the result of Segretti and some of the other “Ratfuckers” creating so much confusion and false accusations that Muskie simply could not respond in any meaningful way.

“…I’m sure that O’Keefe will explain that they would never ever ever let any police officer actually get killed, because the real plan was to get someone — preferably someone of the dusky hue -on film threatening to kill a cop so that they would be arrested instead so, no harm, no foul, just a black guy, amirite?

And Jeebus knows no James O’Keefe production has ever gone sideways or badly for him in the past. What could possibly go wrong besides ending or ruining someone’s life, not his own?”

Charles, I have a technical question about embedded videos. China blocks both Vimeo and YouTube, so going directly to either just gives me a “page not found” notice. However, I can watch embedded Vimeo streams on your site (and mine, as I found out just now) with no problems. Not so YouTube embeds.

So, is Vimeo forwarding the stream through your server, so that the Great Firewall thinks the stream is from LGF and not Vimeo? And, does YouTube not conceal its URL in a similar fashion, so embedded YouTube vids are blocked?

Am I making sense?

Listening to Rubber Soul.

The chapter heading in our listening comprehension text this week was “All you need is love.” Naturally, I had to introduce my 18-20 year-old Chinese students to The Beatles. Showed them music videos of “All You Need Is Love”, and “She Loves You,” because they sing part of the earlier song in “All You Need.”

The lyrics are easy to learn for EFL students, BTW. I’ll bet Sir Paul and John had no idea about that at the time.

Yeah I remember reading about the Canuck letter in All the President’s Men. Nixon sure did employ a lot of genuine scumbags. Win at all costs.

Richard Nixon was the worse type of failed president: Unlike Herbert Hoover and Jimmy Carter, who were not up to the job but were still decent men who tried to do the right thing, by 1972 Nixon had become a viscous, bitter, ends-justify-the-means president who did not care about the violence he was doing to America’s system of government.

In his focus only on himself and his goals to the exclusion of legitimate questions of if his goals were the right ones or if his methods were wrong because of the harm they did, Richard Nixon in fact came to resemble Woodrow Wilson, whose presidency also ended in failure large part because of an isolated president who would accept no views other than his own. Thus Nixon ranks as one of the two worst presidents of the 20th Century.

Someone is paying James O’Keefe to continue to be an oozing shitstain on the body politic.

It’s not like he’s got a real job. Shouldn’t we track down the funder who pays for his crap?

How many pianos do you suppose are in China?

Sounds like a Fermi question.

1.3 billion people. Figure 30% are middle income or above and can afford to have a piano in their home. That’s 390 million individuals. Assume half are married with children — 195 million. Then figure 1 in 4 has a piano in their home, giving about 49 million.

Then, we’d need to include all the schools, music shops, bars and hotels with pianos.

OK, there’s a whole lotta pianos in China.

IANAL, but it would seem that O’Keefe’s little stunt, had it been pulled off, would have been incitement under Brandenburg v. Ohio

(1) speech can be prohibited if it is “directed at inciting or producing imminent lawless action” (Check!) and (2) it is “likely to incite or produce such action.” (Check)

oyez.org

I’m not sure New York or NYC has such a law regarding incitement to imminent lawless action, but I’d bet that there’s something on the books. What O’Keefe was proposing wasn’t a mere stunt, but a highly dangerous act that could have gotten someone killed.

Nutburgerette Sandy Rios is warning Christians to “prepare for martyrdom” if the SCOTUS legalizes SSM next month.

*headdesk*

Sandy Rios, director of governmental affairs for the American Family Association and host of a daily radio program, did not specify what she meant by that - but her context was clear.

“Homosexual marriage is going to bring about the tip of the spear of the battle we’re going to face,” Rios said Thursday to a gathering of religious right activists and pastors.

She told the Christian activists to “stop playing it safe,” telling them the Bible encouraged bold action.

“You must prepare for martyrdom,” Rios said. “I don’t know what it’s going to look like, but it’s coming.”

Religious conservatives have been encouraging activists and lawmakers to pledge to commit unspecified acts of civil disobedience if the court strikes down bans against same-sex marriage.

I have’t worn a skirt since the ’90s when skirts were required for women at a law firm; the partners were troglodyte sexists and liked “to look”—one even went so far as to date the help openly—so I wore my skirts just below my knees; always wore suits. I later won an EEOC charge against them for creating a sexist working environment. The sr partner remarked to me that he wouldn’t have hired me if I didn’t have a “tight ass” and there was always a veneer of sex around that office, perpetrated by the men—they saw young attractive women as “fair game”, basically thought women would allow, and do, anything to keep their jobs. I only lasted 5 years because I was good at my job and refused to “socialize” with them. I was building a pile of evidence, too.

9 Things You Think You Know About Jesus That Are Probably Wrong

I usually don’t like such pieces, which mostly seek to sensationalize rather than enlighten. This one is not awful. But gets off on the wrong foot:

Married, not single. When an ancient papyrus scrap was found in 2012 referring to the wife of Jesus (most likely a forgery), some Catholics and Evangelicals were scandalized at the very thought. But unlike the Catholic Church, Jews have no tradition of celibacy among religious leaders. Ancient writers documented exceptions like the Apostle Paul or the Essene sect precisely because they violated the norm. In the Gospels, Jesus iscalled rabbi; and all great rabbis that we know of were married. A rabbi being celibate would have been so unusual that some modern writers have argued that Jesus must have been gay. But a number of ancient texts, including the canonical New Testament, point to a special relationshipbetween Mary Magdalene and Jesus. For example, the non-canonical Gospel of Phillip says, “[Jesus] loved her more than all the disciples, and used to kiss her often on her [mouth].”

The part about a rabbi is a weak probabilistic argument. Even if statistics somehow support it (I don’t know one way or another), why couldn’t Jesus have been an exception? Then it becomes purely idiotic. Who the fuck cares what the 3rd century C.E. Gospel of Phillip says on the matter? Being a late apocryphon, it has no historical value whatsoever, so why mention it at all except to give the rubes an illusion that there are some actual hints that J was married?

In any case, a question mark after the first sentence is a must.

The next plan, as I understand it, is to find a way to get a veto-proof majority in the Senate to pass Menendez and Kirk’s bills, so that the Senate may impose new sanctions and impose themselves into the negotiations.

NPR was reporting today on the expansion of middle class Chinese tourists dollars$ and their traveling . Quite a bit of $.

Oh, no doubt. Their travels have also sparked complaints about their poor manners and crappy behavior.

For example, one lady on an airplane refused to close the latrine door while she was using it. A mother let her toddler pee in the aisle on a plane. Another let her kid take a crap on the sidewalk in Hong Kong. A Thai blogger bitched online about a group of Chinese tourists who jumped the queue for tickets.

That being said, I have not witnessed such horrible examples in my travels, but it is a fair criticism that some of China’s nouveau riche are still country bumpkins in many ways.

That bolded part would only increase dislike of the United Nations in the US. Nah. The UN haters started at the time of the JBS and nothing much any reasonable administration has done or hasn’t done affects that irrationality.

The magick-thinkers about “Israel” will continue to do so.

The US must pursue foreign policy for our benefit, not for either the current state of Israel or the Palestinians.

That’s what so many who seem so hot about this issue seem to forget.

US foreign policy is to serve US interests, not others’.

Now, in our enlightened world I hope we agree that what is best for the entire planet will be best for us most of the time and I for one wish we all had a more planetary worldview rather than a tribal one.

Yet I still expect Obama and Kerry to undertake negotiations for my benefit, not for people in other countries.

184 freetoken  Mar 21, 2015 9:14:13am

And lest anyone not understand what the #1 goal of US policy in the Middle East is, I will present it here:

Don’t drag us into a war.

Especially don’t drag us into a wide-scale war.

The #2 goal is this:

Don’t disrupt the flow of oil and commerce in the region.

Any goals lower on the list are not so important to us.

185 Targetpractice  Mar 21, 2015 9:14:38am

This administration has been taking it on the chin for the past six years, not trying like past administrations have to impose peace talks or negotiate in Israel’s stead in order to secure some manner of legacy. It’s defended Israel’s actions again and again in the UN, souring our relations with our own allies just to provide cover in the hopes that some manner of peaceful negotiations could begin.

With the announcement last week that Bibi will not allow a Palestinian state to exist, I think it’s past time to press the matter. More to the point, it’s time to make clear that this continued refusal by both sides to reach a peaceful resolution is causing trouble on an international scale. If it takes a UN resolution to make that happen, then so be it. I’d think anyone who supports Israel would prefer UN imposed negotiations to the alternatives, such as an EU boycott that would cripple Israel’s economy.

186 Justanotherhuman  Mar 21, 2015 9:17:44am

re: #178 Dark_Falcon

That bolded part would only increase dislike of the United Nations in the US. Also, any UN resolution regarding a two-state solution would be premature at this time and will remain premature for the foreseeable future. Such a resolution will be a mature idea at the same time the thinking of the Palestinians matures and not before.

Then you above all else ought to condemn Netanyahu as he’s trying to scuttle our effort to bring that to pass.

For years now, across administrations, it has been the US approach to offer both carrots and sticks. To the Palestinians who want to live with an existing Israeli state we offer the carrot, while to those who want to destroy an Israeli state we offer the stick.

But now Bibi comes along and says that the carrot won’t be real.

Bibi intentionally tries to subvert US policy for his own (and even his more hardline coalition members’) goals.

Which is just fine for them if they are indeed representing their people (in the current state of Israel), but as an American I say we ought not follow them down their own, ultimately self-fulling destructive, beliefs.

Powerful entities do not normally use terrorism as a tool. It is the weapon of the underdog. Israel does not need to use terrorism as they have an almost certainly nuclear-armed military and powerful friends. The Palestinians have neither.

I don’t support terrorism in any way, shape or form, but you shouldn’t pat Israel on the back for not using a tactic that would not help them in any way.

Quite honestly, I don’t think either side in this matter is serious about a peaceful resolution. Trying to offload all the blame on the Palestinians ignores the reality that Israel, at least under a right-wing/orthodox government, has no real intention of accepting a sovereign Palestinian state. I actually believe that what Bibi fears most is that the violence ends, because then he’ll have no excuse for why negotiations don’t go forward.

Oh grow up. PLL wants to put all the onus for finding a wife for him on other people, has decided that she must be a muslim, and is upset that other people can’t fix the convert on the spectrum can’t establish his problem. You both bear responsibility for where you are in life and shouldn’t expect other people to solve all your issues for you or get impatient and upset when they can’t.

Do I care that you’re in a very similar boat? No. Take some of that personal responsibility you’re on about and fix your problems yourself. You aren’t most muslims. You should stop trying to be. It’s creepy and they clearly don’t like it. You are always going to be a convert and that comes with being to a certain degree on the outside. If you really absolutely can only consider being in a relationship with another muslim, ignoring how fucked up that is for a moment, go to Kosovo and teach English. It’s a muslim country in Europe and they absolutely LOVE Americans.

Put yourself out there, take a risk, stop trying to shoehorn yourself into a situation where you clearly don’t fit and stop putting the onus on the community to make you fit. Go somewhere where your outsider status is an asset. Go to Kosovo.

Understandable.
However, it sounds like you are seriously stressing out looking for a quick solution to your (hopefully) temporary situation.
If family connections is the usual way to go and gender separation is problematic, then you need to start building serious friendships/relationships with the male members of your community.
Take honest stock of yourself and look for which of your qualities are ones they would look at as positives for their sisters/cousins/whoever and which ones are not. Make yourself an attractive possible match for their female relatives.
Also, there is the condition you have that the woman should not be a convert. Switch that around: how would you feel if the fact that you are a convert yourself is the reason no one is willing to be matchmaker for you?

Sigh.

The hardest thing Americans are going to have to do in this generation is get used to the idea that the United States is just another country. Still a very big and very powerful country to be sure, but not “the indispensable nation, not a beacon of liberty shining into the darkness, and not the only great power that matters.

Gwynne Dyer - Future: Tense. The Coming World Order

A fine demonstration of how difficult that is going to be for many Americans, D_F.

I find this whole thing disturbing. Women are being discussed as though we are commodities to be bargained for among the menfolk.

Indeed.

I haven’t commented here in quite a while but here goes:

I have been married to an Iranian-American for 35 years. We travel to the ME and Iran often.

I am somewhat sorry along with being slightly amused by the gentleman’s hope for a Muslim bride.

I know scads of Muslim women and have yet to see a marriage arranged by Parent’s anymore. Their American Muslim woman and they can find their own mate…thank you very much.

Yes, the family will be consulted but they usually go along with their daughter and the majority are college educated and more often than not professional.

And as the young man has demands…let me tell you…she will have a long list of her own…..like my daughter has.

“The car entered Turkey from Syria, carrying a licence plate registered in the southeastern Turkish province of Gaziantep, Doᇺn News Agency reported March 21.

“22 full-automatic rifles, a Russian-made heavy machine gun, eight grenades and some 2,700 bullets were found by the police who searched the car in Kocaeli’s Gebze district after an unnamed informer alerted security services.

Morning Lizards.

I convinced the husband that it was ok to have an accountant do the taxes for us again this year, so two weeks ago I got all the paperwork together and scanned and then mailed him a DVD of it. Now waiting for the verdict on what the numbers will be.

I could have done it myself but a) although I am unemployed I have been busy working on that project and b) if I manage some level of successful self-employment in the next several months, I want the ability to dump all the tax issues on someone else’s lap.

We paid off the mortgage last year so this is our last year with interest deductions (which were honestly getting pretty low anyway).

Property taxes would be a lot higher except this is CA and Prop 13 has long, long-term consequences. See: the decline of the school system.

I’m glad I caught you. I know you were part of the deep conversation we were having last night, and I don’t know if you read the rest of this thread. Things took a good turn with Mrs. Fish last night and I think we’ll be okay.

re: #347 Backwoods_Sleuth

jeebus, you did what I consider the hard part!
For me, the actual tax returns take up about an hour or so.
Organizing the paperwork documentation is the nightmare part.

I have a list from last year’s taxes (and the scanned documentation), and all miscellaneous receipts (for things like deductions) get put in an envelope that lives in the closet during the year. So in the end it is a matter of getting all the forms that don’t get mailed but are instead downloaded, and scanning the paperwork.

That was still probably a good 4 hours worth of work or so, but …going through and entering things, and triple checking, and verifying that I understand what the hell is going on to the best of my ability …that tends to take more like 12.

Oh yeah. I’ve got an annual Master Tobacco Settlement payment that has to be split up between interest income, farm income and long-term capital gains. Last year’s sequestration has totally screwed that up because I got only a fraction of the payment and it messes up all of the previous years’ calculations.
For the measly $1100-something normal payment it was a ridiculous amount of computation. The 2014 payment was about a third of that and I still can’t figure out if I’m supposed to report the entire amount I was supposed to get or what I actually got.
2014 was supposed to be the last year (the MTS was for 10 years) but I have a sinking feeling the nightmare will continue a while longer…

Employee stock purchase plans, where you can purchase stock at a discount.

That difference between the normal purchase price and the discounted purchase price you get is considered regular income and taxed as such. And then anything over the normal purchase price (assuming you are able to sell at a profit) is capital gains.

And it wasn’t until 2010 that companies were required to send out the information in an easy to keep track of form to allow you to calculate the regular income portion.

We have a whole spreadsheet, which was a giant bitch to come up with and is now mostly irrelevant because the new company does the things differently. Just until we finish getting rid of the previous holdings.

With all this tax talk, it’s good not to have to file anymore. That’s what happens when your only income is SS and you own nothing at all except personal possessions. When I was making a lowly $35K back in the ’90s, I had to buy another house because the one I’d been in for 14 yrs had little interest to offset my earnings as a single (kids were grown, of course) and I’m sure I was paying more taxes as a percent of income than Warren Buffett.

I’m sure the Rs could come up with a way to tax personal possessions, though. : )

That would be the Burden on the Wealthy Tax they are working on.

All of us below their 2% status will pay a proportional tax based on our meager value and worthiness to them. It is based on the burden we all cause them for having to be concerned with social programs and the like. The less you make the bigger the burden, so you pay more than those that are less a burden.

The stupid thing about those discussions is that the category “white” “European” and “Hispanic” are not all of the same kind.

It’s one of those things that is of no concern to those who want to push buttons.

Nearly all “Hispanics” have significant amount of European ancestors, courtesy of the Spanish (or Portuguese, or French.)

This topic is mostly about fishing for buttons to push.

Most who would self label as “Hispanic” also have significant Native American and African (almost always slaves) ancestry.

But then again so do a non-trivial portion of people in the US already, including those who self-label as “white”.

Too bad it’s not a concept that makes sense.

If anything this hot-button is about speaking English versus not.

A very tiny fraction of my ancestors spoke English before 1600. Their children picked up English as a way to live. I only know of a handful of my ancestors who came over from England.

This whole issue is part of the politics of America in the last half of the 20th century, when in the US we decided to want to lower labor costs by welcoming, or at least not closing the door to, millions of people from Mexico and Central America.

And they didn’t speak English, and they are sort of brown. Which makes them the “other”, so now they are the enemy or something.

The only thing it takes to stop a bad guy with 6 molotov cocktails in a bag with a machete is a good guy with 6 molotov cocktails in a bag with a machete.

Or 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag.

Nice fat throw over the place, and I dare say I hit for a double:

I’d say you struck out swinging, with all the empty force of Casey at the Bat.

You’re still wedded to trickle down economics as an example of economic literacy. Indeed, it’s still the linchpin of the gop’s economic philosophy. It hasn’t worked over the last 35 years, and it won’t start working just because REAGAN!

The defect in your thinking is holding onto the gop’s doctrine of the past without examining the intervening years of contrary evidence. You’re stuck in idelogical mud rather than adadpting to facts on the ground. It might make you feel good inside, but it’s deeply irrational as an intellectual guiding force.

As for economic results, please tell us how the policies of Bush Jr. were superior in theory or results to the Clinton and Obama years. Bush was the first president in history to launch wars while cutting taxes. How did that work out for us? Please, defend it.
