Then There Was the Time Ted Cruz Said, “We Need a Hundred More Like Jesse Helms in the Senate”

In a 2013 speech to the right wing Heritage Foundation, newly announced presidential candidate Ted Cruz sang the praises of Jesse Helms, the notoriously racist Senator from North Carolina. Cruz said Helms was the first politician to whom he ever donated money, and ended his fond reminiscences with the statement, “We need a hundred more like Jesse Helms in the US Senate.”

Remember, though — Ted Cruz can’t be a racist because his best friend in college was black.

The first candidate he ever sent money. Well that says a lot about Ted and I think it shows you why the GOP youth movement while young in appearance is just as old and reactionary as what Helms was. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. i knew Cruz was a craven asshole but this yikes.

We need a hundred more like Elizabeth Warren in the US Senate.

Helms Sings a Song of ‘Dixie’; Moseley-Braun Looks Away

Moseley-Braun, a Democrat from Illinois, told the story at the National Urban League annual dinner Wednesday night, about two weeks after another tangle with Helms in which she defeated his move to renew a patent on the Confederate flag insignia.

The incident happened Tuesday, she said. When Helms stepped into the elevator, “he saw me standing there, and he started to sing, ‘I wish I was in the land of cotton … ’ And he looked at Sen. Hatch and said, ‘I’m going to make her cry. I’m going to sing ‘Dixie’ until she cries.’

Helms Sings a Song of ‘Dixie’; Moseley-Braun Looks Away

He was a coward and very representative of how his party has forfeited any claims on civil rights in the past 50 years. Jesse Helms was a bigger bigot than Robert C. Byrd and even Strom Thurmond were during their time in the Senate even if Helms never wore KKK robes that I know nor ran for president as an arch segregationist like Thurmond did.

Voter ID is the law; live with it

Let’s be clear about something: Voter ID is a mistake. Plain and simple.

But let’s be clear about something else: It is now the law in Wisconsin, after the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear a challenge to the state’s version of voter ID. It’s a puzzling decision given the high court’s decision last fall to delay implementation with the November elections pending. The spring election is only two weeks away and this decision could have resulted in significant confusion and some votes not being counted.

To his credit, Republican Attorney General Brad Schimel immediately moved to ease any confusion with the spring election, saying IDs would not be required for the April 7 ballot.

“Absentee ballots are already in the hands of voters, therefore, the law cannot be implemented for the April 7 election. The Voter ID law will be in place for future elections — this decision is final,” Schimel said in a statement.

And voters will have to live with it.

Good advice I guess, “STFD & STFU.”

Helms was also an asshole personally in a way Thurmond wasn’t, or at least he stayed that way after Thurmond had changed. Nasty though Strom could be, he would not have sang ‘Dixie’ for the sole purpose of badgering a black woman (though he would not have moved to stop it until late in his life). Helms was just being a dick there.

Right, and I haven’t even gotten started on how he acted during the early years of the AIDS crisis. I think Strom while he never expressed regret like Byrd did showed signs of regret because he did do things like vote for the MLK holiday and I think he voted for some civil rights amendments too. By no means was Lott right to say that we would have been better off had he won against Truman and Dewey but he showed some growth, the same cannot be said for Helms who remained an unrepentant dick until he died. I only regret that Helms did not live to see Barack Obama’s presidency.

Yep, he was a huge homophobe as well. Like claiming all cases of AIDS came from sodomy while the mother of Ryan White was in attendance. He was just naturally an asshole and sadly the people of North Carolina didn’t seem to mind and gave him five terms in the Senate.

Minor additions from Wikipedia:

Helms had a negative view of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people and LGBT rights in the United States.[270][270][271] Helms called homosexuals “weak, morally sick wretches” and tried to cut funding for the National Endowment for the Arts for supporting the “gay-oriented artwork of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe”.[272][273] In 1993, when then-president Bill Clinton wanted to appoint ‘out’ lesbian Roberta Achtenberg to assistant secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Helms held up the confirmation “because she’s a damn lesbian”, adding “she’s not your garden-variety lesbian. She’s a militant-activist-mean lesbian”.[271] Helms also stated “I’m not going to put a lesbian in a position like that. If you want to call me a bigot, fine.”[270] When Clinton urged that gays be allowed to serve openly in the armed forces, Helms said the president “better have a bodyguard” if he visited North Carolina.[273] His views on gay and lesbian citizens were depicted in the 1998 documentary film Dear Jesse.

Helms initially fought against increasing federal financing for HIV/AIDS research and treatment, saying the disease resulted from “unnatural” and “disgusting” homosexual behavior.[56] “There is not one single case of AIDS in this country that cannot be traced in origin to sodomy,” he said in 1988.[274] In his final Senate year, he strongly supported AIDS measures in Africa, where heterosexual transmission of the disease is most common, and continued to hold the belief that the “homosexual lifestyle” is the cause of the spread of the epidemic in America.[56][275]

Her father was not an ambient racist, carried along by the provincial thinking of his times; he was dynamically racist, a man who helped shape and amplify those currents. That he had a black daughter doesn’t simply complicate his legacy, it further damns it. In ways that run contrary to any parental creed, he worked to make the world a worse place for his child and her children. Read my re: #61. Thurmond’s crime wasn’t just the hypocrisy, the extramarital affair or the definitely statutory if not provably forced rape, i.e. the definite power imbalance and consent issues at play. His crime wasn’t passive. His crime was an active one, it was overt and his agency in it was absolute, ongoing, recidivist and unrepentant.

His crime was making a name for himself by actively opposing the rights of people who looked exactly like his daughter. That’s not just a sociopathic total lack of empathy, but an utter failure as a parent to acknowledge one’s offspring as deserving of basic rights and equality under the law. What Thurmond did, how he constructed and conducted his entire public life, is simply monstrous and inexcusable. Trying to contextualize it in the “long history in the South” isn’t just useless, it’s factually and morally wrong.

I celebrated with Chinese takeout a bit earlier since a simple test eliminated a major invasive one. And I feel vindicated in firing last year’s dr who kept sending me to specialists. Another one totally not needed that she referred me to actually sent me a letter a couple of weeks ago (over a year later) trying to tell me I could have cancer, blah, blah, blah, a really nasty one trying to invoke fear.

This new young doctor specialized in the care of patients in rural areas, so I know he’s not looking to get rich. We’re just going to take this test every year. He did send in an Rx for some fish oil capsules since my triglycerides are a bit high. And recommended Vit D, but I’ll also get more of that with 20 min of sun every day, if it ever decides to stay out for that long.

Read my Thurmond’s crime wasn’t just the hypocrisy, the extramarital affair or the definitely statutory if not provably forced rape, i.e. the definite power imbalance and consent issues at play. His crime wasn’t passive, it was active, it was overt and his agency in it was absolute, ongoing, recidivist and unrepentant.

His crime was making a name for himself by actively opposing the rights of people who looked exactly like his daughter. I’m not justifying it in any way. I was saying that what he did wasn’t unique but was part of a very long history of white southern men raping black women. I wanted to add context, yes, but I have never nor will I ever attempt to excuse Thurmond’s act of rape. that he didn’t see his actions as rape makes his mindset worse, not better.

Even back in my day, we feminists often said we’d never vote for Republican women because they were constantly voting against their own best interests, no matter what the issue was. We all had Republican women in our families for the most part, so it wasn’t a secret. Even those in my own family circle thought I was some kind of “traitor” to kinder, küche, and kirche even as I was raising my kids, working FT and keeping house in my off-work hours.

Unlike with McCain, whose birth specifically in 1936 and specifically in the Panama Canal Zone created legitimate questions about his eligibility due to an obscure legal gap, Ted Cruz, having been born in 1970, falls under this rule:

law.cornell.edu

The following shall be nationals and citizens of the United States at birth:

[…]

(g) a person born outside the geographical limits of the United States and its outlying possessions of parents one of whom is an alien, and the other a citizen of the United States who, prior to the birth of such person, was physically present in the United States or its outlying possessions for a period or periods totaling not less than five years, at least two of which were after attaining the age of fourteen years

There’s still legit a question about Cruz’s eligibility. Namely whether NBC status can be conferred by an act of legislature. In other words, is there a difference between citizenship at birth by via the Constitution (14th Amendment) and “statutory” citizenship conferred by a lesser Act of Congress.

One could plausibly argue that McCain was on stronger ground than Cruz, because despite the ambiguity in the law both the Canal Zone and the Naval Air Station he was born on were legally owned and operated US territory at the time. No such claim can be made for Cruz.

I find it a bit amusing that Cruz’s parents divorced while he was in law school and you never hear about his mother. You can’t even locate her online except as mentioned in stories about Ted Cruz, as almost an afterthought in biographies.

And both his parents were married previously, with both having 2 daughters each fro those marriages.

Yet, where are the sisters? Is he close to them? The only family member I recall seeing (other than the wife and 2 kids Cruz presently has) is his father, Rafael.

Anyway…I am willing to bet that this story of Ted giving Jesse Helms $10 out of his .50¢ allowance is total bullshit.

Who is going to check? And he knows it.

I see it like the lead singer in a band that tells the audience the new drummer lived in the city they are playing in just like he also lived in the last three cities they recently played.

Ted’s a bullshitting bullshitter…would you believe anything he says about anything…especially something there is no way to verify?

Big day for Ted. I’ve followed a few of the comments today. Having this fool as the first official Republican candidate is great. All those loons are going to have to ramp up the rhetoric now. It will be especially fun to watch Cruz and Paul. I see both as willing to say and do anything for a vote or two. They will be out to top one another, and it will force the entire pack of clowns to clown it up.

Jeb is already pandering based on his most recent comments. He probably would be better to stay away from the fray and then act sensible at the debates and convention and get the candidacy. He seems scared to play it straight though. That will be his loss.

Oh yeah…saw some saying they are running out. Here is some more.

re: #114 goddamnedfrank

On the contrary, McCain was on a far shakier ground, because the Canal Zone was not de jure a territory where the full Constitution applied, and this specifically concerned the question of citizenship. This is all very well explained by Prof. Chin.
Even if one argues that the 1937 law retroactively granted him an NBC status (also a shaky proposition, because the text of the act does not seem to be retroactive), the NBC retroactivity itself is pretty controversial.

Cruz was naturalized by statute at the time of his birth, which makes him an NBC.

Fought with them all the damn time with getting the damn email blasts to go out properly. Their techs were the worst.

This site I inherited and the client wanted to stay on GoDaddy. I thought since they already had the original windows asp site going for close to 6 years moving to a new server for a php page site would be no big deal. I was wrong. re: #142 ObserverArt

I’ve got nothing good to say about them. I had bad experience with them a few years back just with them handling our many company email accounts and email marketing.

We were going to have the old and new running and then I went to have them cut off the old site on Wednesday and by Wednesday night they had both the old and new off line. Just got the new site up this afternoon.

And their admin UI is just horrible. Every time I have to log in (and I don’t go near them until it’s an absolute necessity), it seems like they move stuff around and/or set up new pages and don’t remove the links to the old pages.

Last time, all I had to do was point DNS servers away from them to another host. After waiting a week for the new settings to propagate, then going through three days of trying to get hold of tech support (robo-phone system, which I loathe) and having them ask for credentials I didn’t have, I tried what I thought was an old tech support number and got through - at which point the tech kid told me ‘Oh, you’re working from the old page for DNS settings.’

They’d changed their UI and never updated the damned links. Useless.

I liked Richardson as a candidate back in 08. I really liked his creds but Obama was the better choice in the end even without the questions about Richardson’s ethics that have come out since then. Now John Edwards is someone who I liked in 2004 despite not liking his hawkishness on the Iraq War but someone who I did not like as much in 2008 because he came across as pandering to the liberal base rather than sincere heart thought out positions. I liked Biden though I found him cocky (this has since changed since Biden became Obama’s running mate and IMO one excellent VP). Dodd I felt indifferent towards- he didn’t excite or offend. Gravel was amusing and Kucinich was a reminder of my moonbat days.

Under the circumstances, I’m glad some non-local authorities are looking into this. But the lack of something to step off of doesn’t necessarily indicate foul play. I believe initial reports indicated a sheet was used instead of rope. It’s plausible that he climbed the tree to tie one end of the sheet to a branch, tied the other around his neck and then let go.

Death by hanging is either by a broken neck or by suffocation. Suffocation is painful and prolonged. Someone who understood that might prefer the quick broken neck.

Sorry if this seems morbid. My cynicism suspects this was a murder, but I think it’s premature to reach conclusions.

There is an apparent urban legend making the rounds that several times as many boys as girls have been born in the last few years for some reason, and (naturally) the gummint is covering it up.
I’ve heard this from a couple of sources, both affiliated with fundamentalist churches. Both cite the classic FOAF (friend of a friend) as a source.
The interesting thing is that this same claim was prevalent in fringe fundy circles in the late 70s.
I wonder if it is an example of a cyclical urban legend, one that reccurs at regular intervals, sometimes to the week. This phenomenon is documented by folklorist Jan Brundvand in several of his seminal works on urban legends.

I think the thing with Cruz and why probably why a lot of his fellow R’s don’t like him is that he’s pretty much been running for president from the moment he was swore into office. Now could say the same thing about Rand Paul too but it’s even more blatant with Ted.

seems to me like he’s been running for president since the first time he bullied somebody into giving him their lunch money

re: #249 William Barnett-Lewis

For this he deserves thanks even today:

On the night of June 29, 1971, Gravel attempted to read the papers on the floor of the Senate as part of his filibuster against the draft, but was thwarted when no quorum could be formed.[70] Gravel instead convened a session of the Buildings and Grounds subcommittee that he chaired.[70] He got New York Congressman John Dow to testify that the war had soaked up funding for public buildings, thus making discussion of the war relevant to the committee.[71] He began reading from the papers with the press in attendance,[70] omitting supporting documents that he felt might compromise national security,[72] and declaring, “It is my constitutional obligation to protect the security of the people by fostering the free flow of information absolutely essential to their democratic decision-making.”[72]

He read until 1 a.m., until with tears and sobs he said that he could no longer physically continue,[72] the previous three nights of sleeplessness and fear about the future having taken their toll.[8] Gravel ended the session by, with no other senators present, establishing unanimous consent[71] to insert 4,100 pages of the Papers into the Congressional Record of his subcommittee.[41][66] The following day, the Supreme Court’s New York Times Co. v. United States decision ruled in favor of the newspapers[66] and publication in The Times and others resumed. In July 1971, Bantam Books published an inexpensive paperback edition of the papers containing the material The Times had published.[73]

Cruz hasn’t made a lot of allies in his political career, I can’t think of one. The only guy that even hangs around Cruz is Sen. Lee of Utah and that is because he is a mindless teabagger who needs someone to lead him around by the dick.

Sarah Palin likes him.

Death by hanging is either by a broken neck or by suffocation. Suffocation is painful and prolonged. Someone who understood that might prefer the quick broken neck.

Sorry if this seems morbid. My cynicism suspects this was a murder, but I think it’s premature to reach conclusions.

The bit I have been hearing of this I am leaning towards suicide. We had a kid around here 6 - 7 years back that did the same thing. Climbed a backyard tree with a sheet, tied it off on branch, tied around neck, jumped. Until I hear something about signs of a struggle or abrasions to the deceased I will keep leaning towards suicide. Though I admit when I very first heard about the incident the first thing that came mind was lynching.

You only get a first shot at a first impression, and Cruz showed he’s amateur hour despite the oratory performance in front of a stacked, packed, and rented audience at Liberty U.

Where’s his computer/IT/tech department’s skills to make sure they have their site live from the get go, and that the tedcruz.com domain is his? He knew he was doing this months (if not years) ago. Yet, he and his crew failed to secure the sites?

If he can’t secure his domain name, how can he keep our nuclear weapons secure?

How can he complain about Obamacare’s website rollout, which was far more technologically advanced and critical but hobbled by the delay in waiting for the Supreme Court to determine what was constitutional? His site? What’s his site btw? It surely isn’t tedcruz.com, because that isn’t his.

It appears to be tedcruz2016, but it’s a mess, and still loading on FiOS 50/50 (to say nothing of security issues).

Or that his logo is an upside down flag burning (well, his disdain for the US Constitution, the separation of church and state, and civil rights enshrined in the Constitution are well known).

Chuckles has, however, doxxed and smeared lots of folks who weren’t political officials, let alone presidential contenders for a major party nomination. He’s real good at doxxing and smearing folks. Yeah, there’s no denying that he was. And frankly if Glenn didn’t have his head so far up his ass, he’d know that it’s Donald Trump more than anyone who is pushing the Cruz birther nonsense. That part is fine, but the cartoon CL referenced was seriously over-the-line. It wasn’t just nasty, it was also stupid because to depict Ted Cruz as a monkey in the manner that it did (no details beyond that, because its gross) makes the person who drew it and those who pass it around look like assholes.

I think I recall Geller or Orly Taitz trying to claim that because his parents were unwed that made him ineligible. Just a laugh riot. Honestly, if I had it my way, we’d do away with the born citizen requirement. We allow people who become naturalized citizens to serve in the Cabinet, the Supreme Court, and Congress. Well if they try to argue that, they’re still wrong since Ann Dunham was 18. Speaking of Obama’s mother, one of the proudest I was of him was when he was a candidate when Bristol Palin’s pregnancy was publicized. He pointed out that he too was the child of a teen mother. And I guess that genuine gesture of empathy to the Palin family is why I find Sarah’s grudge hatred directed at him and his entire family so pathetic. She doesn’t know how to disagree without being nasty and it’s something that her older children have sadly inherited from their mother.

A revolution devouring its own children again. Honestly, I could care less where the guy is from. As I said, I’m someone who wants to waive the natural born citizen requirement even but as a fan of dark comedy, I do love the Wingnut flavor du jour having the same questions about his legitimacy that they made about Obama but I have much bigger problems with Cruz as a candidate. The page we are on about for instance is something that bothers me much more than the fact that his American born mother happened to be in Canada at the time of his birth.

To be honest, one of the reasons it bothers me is because using “Ted” or “Bobby” gives me the impression that they’re ashamed of their ethnicity. POTUS never tried to run away from his ethnic heritage. Marco Rubio didn’t suddenly start calling himself “Mark”. It’s a pet peeve with me.

I hope Cruz hangs in there well into the GOP primary debates, for the damage and dissonance he’ll bring.

It’s gonna be a l-o-n-g campaign season.

OBAMA’S MOM WAS 17 WHEN SHE HAD OBAMA AND YOU HAVE TO BE 18 TO BE CONSIDERED A CITIZEN FOR THE NATURAL BORN CITIZEN CLAUSE

For reals, that is the card some of them are playing.

That’s baloney and they’re grasping at straws.

The fact that Ted Cruz was born in Canada caused some on the left to beclown themselves now that he is officially running for president. Not to be left out, the birthers just drove up in their own clown car. The Birther Clown Car is a hybrid, powered by brain farts.

re: #427 HappyWarrior

Well if they try to argue that, they’re still wrong since Ann Dunham was 18. Speaking of Obama’s mother, one of the proudest I was of him was when he was a candidate when Bristol Palin’s pregnancy was publicized. He pointed out that he too was the child of a teen mother. And I guess that genuine gesture of empathy to the Palin family is why I find Sarah’s grudge hatred directed at him and his entire family so pathetic. She doesn’t know how to disagree without being nasty and it’s something that her older children have sadly inherited from their mother.

I stand corrected, this is what the baggers care citing:

….citizenship “at birth” of one born outside of the United States to only one citizen-parent, that such citizen parent have resided in the United States for not less than ten years, at least five of which were after the age of fourteen (8 U.S.C. §1401(a)(7)) (1958 ed.) We all know Mr. Obama’s mother didn’t met this requirement.

One of the many screaming freeper threads over his eligibility

Some of the difference is that Rubio does not only court white voters and so seeks to present himself differently. In my mind, this is not just a political calculation but also stems from the fact that Marco Rubio is genuinely proud of his Cuban heritage. But it cannot be denied that his courting Cuban-American, Dominican-American, and Puerto Rican voters made presenting himself as ‘Marco’ far more viable.

We’re amused by the fact that your party’s flavor of the month actually was born abroad. I don’t think it makes him ineligible and hell I want to do away with the requirement honestly so we don’t have these confusions in the future and I think it’s unfair to children like many of my own ancestors who came to this country at young age who were but except in the place of their birth American for all cases and purposes. I don’t think it’s legitimate that my great grandfather who was born in Germany would be ineligible to run for president but his sister who was born here would be. And as I said, Cruz being Canadian born is really the least of his problem. Wishing the Senate had 100 of one of the worst racists ever to walk that body in modern times though, that’s a biggie and that would be a biggie if he were born on the moon.

Right, I’m just saying, I can easily see why people are confused a little. If I recall, Obama pushed that legislative resolution and that brings to part of why I despise the birthers aside from their blatant bigotry but they claimed he did the resolution to “distract” from questions of his own birth. IF I recall the resolution guarantees that children born to US servicemen and women abroad he viewed as natural born citizens regardless of where they are born. There’s also a lot less Reagan Democrats now than there was in 1980 and 1984. If that’s seriously his “strategy”, he’s fucked. And the Reagan Democrats responded well to Ronnie since he actually could display a sunny disposition. Ted on the other hand scares three year olds.

The only reason I even brought up McCain’s status to people back in 2008 was to point out the hypocrisy of conservatives. Obama WAS born on American soil. If they’re going to accept McCain’s status, then there’s only one reason they won’t accept Obama’s: That he got too much sun in Hawaii.

To be fair, I could say that about each and every one of them. Reagan is an ideal not the reality to many of them even those who were older during Reagan’s presidency. The thing is though, the Reagan Democrats for one pretty much stopped voting GOP heavily after Reagan left. There’s a reason why W Bush is the only candidate not in Reagan’s direct coattails is the only GOPer to get over 50% of the popular vote since 1988 and even Dole, McCain, and Romney know more about getting crossover vote more than Ted Cruz does. And as I said, he’s eliminating all voters under the age of 50 as potential crossovers when he says the Reagan Dems. not a smart tactic. Doesn’t surprise me since he offers nothing to people of my generation.

Fact is though Cruz and I say this as a strong critic of both Ronald Reagan the candidate and man. Reagan could portray a sunny disposition. Ted OTOH has video of him scaring a three year old. Reagan could work across the aisle and with even avowed enemies of the US. Ted? I can’t recall a single instance of him working with a Democrat in the Senate. And finally you could see why people found Reagan likable. The guy could laugh at himself- “I won’t make my opponent’s youth and inexperience an issue.” Cruz wants to be the Reagan that was a fringe lunatic in the 60’s and couldn’t beat Nixon and Ford. But even that Reagan had more complexity than Ted since that Reagan had signed a liberalized abortion law.

I don’t talk about this much because it’s little more than legalistic pedantry and I don’t really give a shit about what the Framers thought or “original meaning textualism” in general. But there there have it, strictly speaking I think he’s in somewhat of a gray area at best.

re: #409 HappyWarrior

That’s what I figured and why I thought the Obama being born in Kenya stuff was nonsensical since via his mother, he would be a natural US born citizen regardless of situation unless one of these lunatics wants to argue that Ann Dunham wasn’t President Obama’s mother which is something that I think even the most insane of them won’t deny.

Being born to an NBC mother is not a sufficient condition. It only is taken together with the other criteria.

web.archive.org

Birth Abroad to One Citizen and One Alien Parent in Wedlock

A child born abroad to one U.S. citizen parent and one alien parent acquires U.S. citizenship at birth under Section 301(g) of the INA provided the U.S. citizen parent was physically present in the United States or one of its outlying possessions for the time period required by the law applicable at the time of the child’s birth. (For birth on or after November 14, 1986, a period of five years physical presence, two after the age of fourteen, is required. For birth between December 24, 1952 and November 13, 1986, a period of ten years, five after the age of fourteen, is required for physical presence in the United States or one of its outlying possessions to transmit U.S. citizenship to the child.) The U.S. citizen parent must be genetically related to the child to transmit U.S. citizenship.

Question: would his mother fulfill this condition? IIRC she wouldn’t because she was 18 when BO was born, whereas she would have to be 14 + 5 = 19 acc. to this requirement.

(There might have still been an out for that situation, because her ostensible husband was a bigamist, and so it can be argued that their marriage wasn’t legitimate in the first place and Obama was born out of wedlock. In this case the requirements were more lax, see the above link. But the point stands: a mother being an NBC is not a sufficient condition by itself.)
