Kneel Before the “Climate Moron of the Day,” Earth Beings

Clown show

Yes, dear readers, I have arrived at long last. Climate change denying right wing performing clown “Steve Goddard” (real name: Tony Heller) has named me his “Climate Moron of the Day,” after a rather hilarious Twitter fight.

Goddard attacks non-climate scientists because what he has, including a rudimentary understanding of statistics, doesn’t hold up against someone well versed in climate and math.

I remember when “conservative” wasn’t a subset of “completely delusional people.” That was a long time ago.

4 b_sharp  Mar 24, 2015 1:22:53pm

Here is a paper that takes into consideration all the statistical ‘noise’ regarding the apparent stall of temperature increase.

Foster and Rahmstorf conclude there has not been a stall in trend, but that the noise has overpowered the signal.

This afternoon I’ve been more interested in the Miss Universe Japan blowup and the idiot-sphere’s attachment to it to pay much attention to Goddard.

I was glad Twitter banned him but like all the Phthiraptera of the digital kind you just can’t really get rid of them.

Here is one scientist’s answer to Cruz’s comments on climate.

tamino.wordpress.com

Tamino is a statistician (Grant Foster) who works peripherally in climate science and frequently brings the math to debunk the WUWT (What’s Up With That) crap put out by Anthony Watts and Goddard.

21 lawhawk  Mar 24, 2015 1:40:23pm

I laugh at his (Steve Goddard’s aka Tony Heller’s) superior intellect.

These folks are so full of themselves that they don’t realize how much of a joke they are to serious minded folks who are intimately involved in climatology and scientific research.

And Chuckles takes that to a whole new level of derp.

22 lawhawk  Mar 24, 2015 1:41:43pm

How quickly before the right wing claims that Orly’s really a left winger?

And why would she wait until Cruz is elected President? Either he’s qualified or he isn’t as per Constitutional law. The time to determine his eligibility is before being elected president, not after.

But this way, she gets to avoid another run-in with the CA Bar and courts because there’s little chance that Cruz gets the nomination for the GOP, let alone win in 2016.

24 b_sharp  Mar 24, 2015 1:43:09pm

Were’s what Spencer (a known creationist and warming denier who runs the other common satellite temperature source) has to say about the RSS feed used by Goddard.

Anyway, my UAH cohort and boss John Christy, who does the detailed matching between satellites, is pretty convinced that the RSS data is undergoing spurious cooling because RSS is still using the old NOAA-15 satellite which has a decaying orbit, to which they are then applying a diurnal cycle drift correction based upon a climate model, which does not quite match reality.

From here.

Earlier in the last thread VB was wondering about 50s illustrations used in RWNJ Tweets. I suggested they could be found by doing a Google search for “illustrations of people of the 1950s.” I had done that search and found this women in love with her Tide Soap box. Perfect for a little Photoshop fun.

Teddy does fit a 50s theme very well.

I thought he was going to replace existing journalism. So why is he again seeking out adulation and confirmation of his journalism from an outlet he despises?

Oh wait, it hurts his ego that he is ignored by all involved and that he’s not the journalist he thinks he is.

He’s a legend in his own mind. A “journalist” without peer. Mostly because his idea of being a “journalist” means he’s a doxxing/smearing louse who hasn’t broken actual news and considers that accuracy is for suckers.

The one of the girl scouts was priceless. You could tell by looking at their faces that it’s going to be a moment that those girls will remember forever. I think Obama has a genuine empathy that so many of his opponents lack for people. Some of them can fake it and others like Cruz can’t even do that.

They seem to think fear of God is the only reason why a person would be good.

If there is no God and no afterlife, wouldn’t killing someone, and wiping out their existence utterly, be one of the greatest crimes you could think of?

If this is our only existence, don’t you owe it to yourself and to others to make it as happy and as pain free as possible because this is all we get?

No, because the other tenet of their belief is that we are all miserable sinners, and only Jesus can save us from the fate we deserve.

Three funny things about Phil’s “argument”:

1. Damning oneself with faint praise: “My religion makes me more moral than a completely hypothetical person who has NO MORALS.” As forceful a statement as “I have better hygiene that than man over there who never wipes his ass.” Have a gold star, Phil.

2. The straw atheist is passive, inactive victim in the story…which begs the question of who’s dropped by his house to rape, murder, and mutilate his family while specifically taunting him about his non-belief. And why are both the rapist/murderers and Phil Robertson mocking the atheist for his inability to make a moral judgement?

3. Is this a very-well rehearsed and scripted fantasy about a rape/murder/torture scenario, or a wholly improvised but well-fleshed fantasy about a rape/murder/torture scenario? Which is less skeevy?

In other words he’s kind of ugly, but V thinks he’s cute and he loves people.

How Robots & Algorithms Are Taking Over

In fact, this is already happening, in part because programmers increasingly rely on “self-correcting” code—that is, code that debugs and rewrites itself*

this silly remark is decorated with an asterisk, which leads to this:

Carr discusses integrated development environments (IDEs) which programmers use to check their code, and quotes Vivek Haldar, a veteran Google developer: “‘The behavior all these tools encourage is not ‘think deeply about your code and write it carefully,’ but ‘just write a crappy first draft of your code, and then the tools will tell you not just what’s wrong with it, but also how to make it better.’” ↩

yah im sure there are a lot of people here besides me that will tell you that IDEs do not make code debug and rewrite itself

It reminds me of a friend of mine who worked as an Editor for a scientific journal. She told me about a job candidate who admitted she couldn’t spell, but said it wasn’t a problem since she knew how to use spell check.

Of course, spell check only tells you if it’s A word, not if it’s THE word.

LOL, this guy is an idiot. He’s stuttering, hemming, and hawing over every question he gets asked. And he admits he can’t come up with a single example. Since these asshats claim our Constitution’s (and presumably Texas’) is based on Christianity that would make it Biblical law and therefore foreign, wouldn’t it?

Oh shit, now he’s talking about small town judges getting bamboozled by slick big city lawyers. One guy is reading him the riot act right now, snarking about “country judges” and basically saying we have real problems to deal with, why should we be wasting time solving problems that don’t actually exist.

He’s talking about preventative law now and just got loud applause, at which point the guy talking basically told everyone to STFU because this is serious and not some polarizing, emotional circus (to paraphrase).

Painful to watch. Time to shut it off. *smh*

And for what? The only reason I’ve ever heard is ‘to destroy Capitalism’, which is just stupid.

Yeah. Say what you will about Clarkson, but the show was really about the three different sides each brought to the program, and I don’t think May and Hammond by themselves could carry it off. For one thing, they’re too nice. Clarkson being a big, oafish, obnoxious buffoon was part of why it worked.

He was almost right, in that the Beeb apparently turned a blind eye to his conduct, on- and off-screen, for over twelve years (for this incarnation of Top Gear anyway). Eventually, the Beeb couldn’t ignore Clarkson’s antics anymore, precisely because of the high profile the show’s worldwide success gave him.

Frankly, Clarkson’s behavior is like drinking and driving: sooner or later, there’s going to be a hell of a wreck.

So, hearing about the show through them, I never really heard much about Clarkson’s behavior. I guess that was all due to everyone loving all the car talk, the Stig bits, etc. and looking over Clarkson’s rough points.

I think you are right. It is a hugely popular show and like a Saturday Night Live for name recognition, it can bestill be used for an all new cast and format. It could still be at BBC. But Sky is a good bet.

re: #195 TedStriker

He was almost right, in that the Beeb apparently turned a blind eye to his conduct, on- and off-screen, for over twelve years (for this incarnation of Top Gear anyway). Eventually, the Beeb couldn’t ignore Clarkson’s antics anymore, precisely because of the high profile the show’s worldwide success gave him.

Frankly, Clarkson’s behavior is like drinking and driving: sooner or later, there’s going to be a hell of a wreck.

Punching out a BBC producer was apparently the last straw.

I laugh at his (Steve Goddard’s aka Tony Heller’s) superior intellect.

These folks are so full of themselves that they don’t realize how much of a joke they are to serious minded folks who are intimately involved in climatology and scientific research.

The trouble is is that it’s being used as double speak. Racists use the term when they claim science has validated their bias, primarily through the data/conclusions used by ‘The Bell Curve’.

Other liars have latched on to the strategy to make it look like they have the science behind their views.

BTW, The Bell Curve uses a number of assumptions that they simply don’t back up to come to the conclusions in the book. It really is a ‘how to lie with data’ handbook.

It’s too bad about the AirBus—and this whole rash of accidents lately.

For many years it seemed like there was a serious airliner crash somewhere in the world roughly every year. Then abruptly—maybe because of the DC-10 getting phased out—it changed to more like every five years. It looked like a real increase in safety, but now it seems like it was just a statistical fluctuation. Like I said, too bad.

re: #180 HappyWarrior

How exactly do you “research” creation outside of just saying God did it. Creation science is a cop out for “I don’t want to think.”

I was thinking the same thing, more or less. I mean, if you’re going to accept the Bible as a history or science book, then it requires that you believe whatever is in it. I don’t even know where that idea comes from… it weirds me out when people try to understand history or science via scripture (and vice versa). Ditto for medicine, math, etc.

This is doubly true in that scripture typically has to be interpreted, not taken literally, and there are a bazillion ways to interpret things.

The only thing I’m sure of is that no single book—no history book, no science book, no religious book—has all the answers for everything & everyone at all times. We have to figure out some things for ourselves and we have to decide when looking to a particular book (or field of knowledge) might be useful to solve whatever problem/question is at hand.

It’s not that complicated, but the notion of doing so seems to scare the crap out of some people. Who knows, maybe they just don’t want to be held responsible for their choices—it’s always easier to blame external influences beyond one’s control than to accept personal responsibility for one’s screw-ups. *shrugs*

UN thwarts Russia over gay staff rights

The United Nations has voted to extend staff benefits to same-sex couples working for the UN, defeating Russian-led opposition to the measure.

The UN Budget Committee recognised gay spouses, regardless of whether or not gay marriage is legal in their country of origin.

Previously, the UN followed national legislation on the issue.

The vote went 80 to 43 against Russia’s resolution, which had backing from China, India and Muslim countries.

EU member states and the US lobbied hard against the resolution and for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s plan to include gay couples in the staff benefits scheme.

More to the point, America was meant to be whatever Americans wanted it to be. That’s the whole point of self-government. It wasn’t so that a bunch of rich white landowners could rule America from beyond the grave. It was a framework to create a government that served the people, versus the other governments of the day which viewed it the other way round.

18th Century rich white landowners were totally okay with the idea that women shouldn’t vote or own property, that one race could be subjugate by another and kept in permanent servitude. We are not bound by their prejudices.

We subscribed during the years we were in Israel, used it as our weekly tour planner. The magazine (and society) are quite serious within the limits that they are vaguely traced to the old ‘proving things’ archaeology. The work they report is solid. It’s basically Scientific American level writing on NE digging.

Thanks! I’ll go ahead and get it then, keeping in mind that there have surely been new discoveries & improved technology since 1991.

I mentioned my g-g-g-uncle Philip Sheridan downstairs a few days ago.
He was really good at a lot of his assignments and a real asshole in others.
But one thing he did was really outstanding.
This is from Wiki, but pretty much is in line with our family oral history:

On July 30, 1866, while Sheridan was in Texas, a white mob broke up the state constitutional convention in New Orleans. Thirty-four blacks were killed. Shortly after Sheridan returned, he wired Grant, “The more information I obtain of the affair of the 30th in this city the more revolting it becomes. It was no riot; it was an absolute massacre.”
In March 1867, with Reconstruction barely started, Sheridan was appointed military governor of the Fifth Military District (Texas and Louisiana). He severely limited voter registration for former Confederates and ruled that only registered voters (including black men) were eligible to serve on juries.Furthermore, an inquiry into the deadly New Orleans riot of 1866 implicated numerous local officials; Sheridan dismissed the mayor of New Orleans, the Louisiana attorney general, and a district judge. He later removed Louisiana Governor James M. Wells, accusing him of being “a political trickster and a dishonest man.”
He also dismissed Texas Governor James W. Throckmorton, a former Confederate, for being an “impediment to the reconstruction of the State,” replacing him with the Republican who had lost to him in the previous election.
Sheridan had been feuding with President Andrew Johnson for months over interpretations of the Military Reconstruction Acts and voting rights issues, and within a month of the second firing, the president removed Sheridan, stating to an outraged Gen. Grant that, “His rule has, in fact, been one of absolute tyranny, without references to the principles of our government or the nature of our free institutions.”

That’s very admirable especially considering the history of the Irish-Americans with African-Americans at that time. Glad to see he was one of the good guys in enforcing civil rights. I know his record with native Americans isn’t the best but people are complicated. I recall reading about an Irish Catholic priest who was a supporter of the early labor movement but also downright hostile to so called Greek Catholics. For those of you who are curious. Greek Catholics are an interesting sect of Catholicism that follows much of Eastern Orthodox ritual but are in league with Rome. Their priests were allowed to marry while my grandmother was a girl. I only know about them since my grandmother was raised in a GC household.

When looking at historical figures, it can be easy to judge them by modern standards. I do try to judge them by the actions of their contempories which is why I cannot give Jefferson a pass for slavery and furthermore not freeing them upon his death like Washington did. Likewise while I do believe Lincoln could have been a better progressive on race issues, I trust Frederick Douglass’s words when he said Lincoln was one of the few white men that treated him like a man.

Yes—they came out of the old urge to ‘prove’ the Bible. At the same time, they report honestly on what comes out of the ground. (Mostly university digs, I don’t think they fund much themselves.) Their level of explanation is modern, I remember a very good description of the fishing operations at the N. end of the Kinneret, Peter’s people, as a Roman tax dodge.

I remember the first time I read a monograph about East African beer culture. I was super confused about the description of the beverage being consumed. Fortunately my professor, who’d done work in the region, understood the basis of my confusion.

Dever presents a very moderate, center-of-the mainstream perspective, in a way trying to defend the Bible as a secular historical source (e.g. he rails against minimalists and revisionists). So if you want to be “on the safe side”, his books are a good place to start. But: I don’t like his prose; also he can get quite technical and long-winded for my taste. Finkelstein’s texts are much more “free-flowing”, but not everything he says is a consensus (esp. about David, Solomon and the United Monarchy).

They get really pissy when you point out the founders owning slaves. I’ve mentioned it here before but when I worked at the history magazine firm, I had to research Jefferson and slavery. And I pretty much found from Monticello no less evidence that destroys the idea that Jefferson was a reluctant and benevolent slave owner. I admire and appreciate the founders but the deification and ignoring their faults is something that disgusts me as a historian.

Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) and Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A (AMSU-A) observations from a series of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellites have been extensively utilized for estimating the atmospheric temperature trend. For a given atmospheric temperature condition, the emission and scattering of clouds and precipitation modulate MSU and AMSU-A brightness temperatures. In this study, the effects of the radiation from clouds and precipitation on AMSU-A derived atmospheric temperature trend are assessed using the information from AMSU-A window channels. It is shown that the global mean temperature in the low and middle troposphere has a larger warming rate (about 20-30 % higher) when the cloud-affected radiances are removed from AMSU-A data. It is also shown that the inclusion of cloud-affected radiances in the trend analysis can significantly offset the stratospheric cooling represented by AMSU-A channel 9 over the middle and high latitudes of Northern Hemisphere.

Let me translate that for you. Basically the satellite temperate data is full of GLAVEN!!!

Loves it!

I think you’ll also like this:

In response Ukraine is refurbishing existing equipment with Ukrainian resources. Emphasis is on armored vehicles, which Ukraine has lots of. Most are elderly, but little used in the past but still effective. The best tanks available to Ukraine right now are 250 T-64BMs and 350 T-64BVs. Ukraine also has 1,000 older T-64B tanks in storage. Only the T-64BM and T-64BM are operational and are in use with the Ukrainian Army. The Since 2007 Ukraine has been upgrading about one of the older T-64Bs to the T-64BM each month. This costs about $600,000 per T-64B. Ukrainian arms factories are also building the T-84 Oplot-M tank and fifteen are already in service and another 40 are to be ready by the end of 2015, and 120 more in 2016 at a cost of $3.7 million each. All this is possible because Ukraine contained many Soviet era armored vehicle plants and inherited them when the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991.

Ukraine also renewed development of heavy infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) using the chassis of the T-64. A Ukrainian firm (Kharkov Morozov) created prototypes of this 35 ton IFV, called theBMPV64 in 2005 but was never able to get any orders and suspended the project. Now the Ukrainian government wants to buy BMPV64s and development has resumed with production to begin by the end of the year. The BMPV64 is a T-64 with the turret removed and the upper portion of the hull raised in order to increase internal space. In addition the engine is moved to the front of the vehicle to give the crew and passengers (10-12 infantry) more space, protection and doors in the back for the infantry to exit the vehicle. There is a three man crew. The crew drives the vehicle and operates (from smaller turret than the original one) a 30mm autocannon and a 7.62mm machine-gun. Two anti-tank missiles are mounted on the left side of this turret. On the front of the turret are three smoke grenade launchers. On top of the turret is a 23mm machine-gun and a 30mm automatic grenade launcher. The T-64 armor has ERA (Explosive Reactive Armor) that can protect against most tank gun shells. In all it’s a formidable weapon that provides exceptional protection for the infantry

Specialists from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense (MoD) are also trying to adapt Zaslon APS (Active Protection System) for the BMPV64. Zaslon consists of a radar to detect incoming missiles and small rockets to rush out and disable the incoming threat. A complete APS weighs between 500 and 1,000 kg (depending on the type of vehicle it is installed on). If the APS is added there will also be upgrades to the BMPV64 fire control system to handle it. Zaslon is already installed on the T-64BM tanks.

I have to step away now, as I need to put my foot up.

He’ll have standing to have it tossed out.

This should be fun…

Yep, the left is squealing about this. Guarantee he has something up his sleeve..

Cruz is light years ahead of these morons and they don’t even know it.

He is said to be a very good lawyer-which means there is a method to his madness…

POW! Indeed.

Watch and see if Cruz doesn’t release a cost analysis and breakdown of how much Obamacare is costing his family.

$2500 savings? HAH!

So, in the upcoming debates, Cruz can ask the other participants if they’ve signed up for 0bamacare. And if they voted for it.
Nice move.

He’s going to chronicle his experience with it and right around when SCOTUS rules he will have quite the tale AND he has already written a bill for the fallout when SCOTUS does find for King, which apparently he thinks they will, which is great news in itself.

That’s an illegal punch. A foul. Right Cross, Right Jab. Left Hook. Uppercut( for in close) Set ‘em up with a right jab followed by a right cross(or two) and then let ‘em have a Left Hook!

Wow. I just posted the latest “Cooking for Vegans” video, but then it was deleted at YouTube. Not sure what happened there - I thought it was funny.

Maybe a little TOO funny. Deleted my post because I don’t want to get Rachel Staman in any trouble. If that’s what’s happening.

Weird.

The first time he comes out of a physical and gets asked how much it cost, he’ll say “Nothing, no thanks to Obamacare” and Freepers will eat it up.

Never mind.

Comedy is dangerous these days.

So the events of The Breakfast Club took place 31 years ago today.

On an entirely unrelated note, it’s time to cover my grey again. Heh.

Shoot, I opened the spy immediately, but was too late on the front page…

Well, that’ll Teach me to wait a couple of minutes.

If you have one hour to spare, I highly recommend you watch this, a most beautiful, strong documentary.

PBS Video

Filmmaker Lacey Schwartz grew up in a typical upper middle class Jewish household in Woodstock, NY. Despite the questions about how she as a white girl could have such dark skin, she believed her family’s explanation that her looks were inherited from her Sicilian grandfather. When she learned the truth about her biological father, she unlocked a powerful family secret.

I have not enough bravos

For those of you willing to jump out of a perfectly good airplane, this video is rather interesting - not often a B-17 is used to haul skydivers :)

Me? There isn’t enough money in the world.

Wouldn’t jump. But I’d love to ride in the nose.

Make that the Nightly Show in a few minutes.

$300-400 dollars for about a half-hour flight. Collings Foundation.

That loon shouldn’t be allowed to dishonor the acronym ‘BAR’. This is a proper BAR:

Would rather have an MG42, or even a Bren.

I spent 10 hours working in the dive shop today, we have a big crew going down to Huntsville to dive in a quarry there, and at the Astronaut training pool at the Space Center. Add that to a couple of open water classes and the rental equipment racks are bare, bare and bare.

We’re still shy a few regulators, so I’m bringing mine in tomorrow, swap out some hoses to make them a more standard configuration so we can put those into the mix. We’re grabbing all the staff equipment we can to make this work.

It was a good day. We were supposted to close at 7, and we were there until past 9 getting people squared away with gear.

Pro Tip: If you are renting gear, get it as far in advance as is possible, make it easy on everybody.

Thanks for posting that (or re-posting, in this case). It’s a song that’s near and dear to my heart, and that music makes me dance even if I’m sitting.

There are multiple versions of it in Spanish, some with rather ribald lyrics.
