A Nasty Surprise in the Greenhouse: The Gulf Stream is Slowing Down

The disaster movie “The Day After Tomorrow” was based on long term scientific concerns about global warming’s impact on the North Atlantic Current, also called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, - what most people think of as “The Gulf Stream” - although that is a simplification.

The movie was obviously over the top in terms of the projected impacts, but after a decade in which science has downplayed the possibility of such an event, a new paper shows that the circulation is indeed slowing down.

This could signal potential impacts on weather, the food chain, and circulation of oxygen and nutrients throughout the ocean.

I’ve been interviewing key authors of the paper, Lead author Stefan Rahmstorf, as well as paleoclimate expert Mike Mann, and Glaciologist Jason Box.

This is a paper that could have substantial impact, and might very well be distorted or sensationalized, - so bookmark this post as a damper for overhyped speculation, as well as a warning about real impacts.

Yet another illustration of how conservatives don’t understand liberalism at all. We’re not saying that you can’t choose your own health care. We’re not saying you can’t spend your money where you want to but what we are saying is we believe in reasonable taxation rates. Oh and does this fuckwit ever think that maybe those of us on the left don’t like our tax money going to endless wars, a prison industrial complex, and a drug war that has had the strong support of conservative politicians.

Jesus, that IS stupid!

You can choose your healthcare. You can’t choose to not have any because you can’t predict when you’ll need it, and hospitals aren’t allowed to dump your sorry ass on the curb if you can’t pay.

You can choose what to do with the money you earn. Even the harshest tax proposals from the Dems have lower rates than in The America You Grew Up In.

You can choose how to defend your family, but since bullets don’t stop at the property line, the rest of us have some stake in that, too.

Morons.

Just read an article on Slate that argued that in order to get something done on Climate change we have to elect Lindsey Graham President. Seriously. Because he’s the only GOP candidate for President who takes global warming seriously, and the GOP Congress won’t do anything about global warming if a Democrat is President.

The Washington Post delivers a reminder of the vileness of the forces of Radical Islamism:

The brutal reason Boko Haram just took 500 ‘young women and children’

This is the story of what comes after the headlines. What happens after the shock dissolves and the news marches onto the next tragedy. This is what happens to the boys, girls and women who are kidnapped by Boko Haram — and why.

Every few months, another fresh kidnapping grips northeastern Nigeria, where the Islamic militants are embroiled in several campaigns against the forces of Nigeria, Chad and Niger. The most — and perhaps only — famous kidnapping is, of course, what occurred around this time last year at a school in the city of Chibok. There, Boko Haram made off with hundreds of schoolgirls and did god knows what with them. They were said to have become “sex slaves,” married off to any number of militants, and haven’t been heard from since.

But there have been many more kidnappings than that. Tuesday brought fresh evidence. According to the BBC and Reuters, hundreds of women and children have been reported missing in a the town of Damasak, which was just reportedly liberated from Boko Haram’s yoke. Specifics are sketchy. Reports don’t agree on either the number of people taken, nor whether the missing are exclusively children under the age of 11 or include women as well. “They took 506 young women and children” in Damasak, a trader named Souleymane Ali told Reuters inside the town. “We don’t know if they killed others after leaving, but they took the rest with them.”

Ali’s own wife and three daughters were taken as the Boko Haram militants fled. “Two of them were supposed to get married this year,” he said. But Boko Haram “said, ‘They are slaves so we’re taking them because they belong to us.’ “

The issue has never been whether the private sector COULD build roads if government didn’t. The issue has always been whether the private sector WOULD build roads, and who would pay for them.

Since roads are a common good, it makes sense for them to be built by the society as a whole, through its arm, government.

And toll streets. And toll cul-de-sacs, alleys, etc.

Not only that, but doesn’t their ‘Free Market Rules’ philosophy state that if a better, cheaper product is possible, the Free Market will provide it? How come no private company ever built a cheaper, better alternative to, say, the Pennsylvania Turnpike?

Knowing cons, they’d probably want to allow discrimination on said roads. Really, it’s simple to me. There are some things i.e. roads that are best in the public sector. There are some things i.e. entertainment that are best in the private sector. And there are some things that both can do. Wingnuts live this delusion that the private sector always knows best which is really laughable when you can think of all the problems I bet each and everyone one of us has with retail.

Pa. police officer charged with criminal homicide after fatal shooting of unarmed motorist

The attempted traffic stop over an expired inspection sticker ended with a Pennsylvania police officer firing two shots into 59-year-old David Kassick’s back as he was lying face down on the ground, according to officials.

Authorities have now charged Hummelstown police officer Lisa Mearkle, 36, with criminal homicide for the fatal February incident. Dauphin District Attorney Ed Marsico announced Tuesday that deadly force wasn’t justified.

Mearkle discharged her Taser twice before shooting Kassick in the center of his back, investigators said. Mearkle’s attorney Brian Perry argued the officer acted in self-defense. “She felt like she had to do what she did,” Perry told the Associated Press. “This person was being commanded, begged, ‘show me your hands,’ and he kept going to his waist.”

A one-and-a-half minute video recorded on Mearkle’s Taser gun captured the incident and it led to the homicide charge.

“At the time Officer Mearkle fires both rounds from her pistol, the video clearly depicts Kassick lying on the snow covered lawn with his face toward the ground,” according to the criminal complaint. “Furthermore, at the time the rounds are fired nothing can be seen in either of Kassick’s hands, nor does he point or direct anything toward Officer Mearkle.”

It’s worth noting that David Kassick was white and almost 60, which is likely why charges were filed in this case (Kassick can’t be called a ‘young punk’ or a ‘thug’). But still it appears Officer Mearkle likely fired her gun when she did not need to do so, and that justifies a homicide charge.

A friend of my wife’s is a Libertarian, who, like most libertarians, gets stumped by the roads question. I suggested to my wife that she work on her the following way:

Roads should be built by the people who benefit.

Having each individual who benefits build only a section of the road would lead to chaos - it would change surface, quality, etc. every 50 feet.

Therefore, the way to do it is for the people who benefit to form some sort of organization to get this done, to do it efficiently, and for the mutual benefit of all those affected.

Luckily, we already have done that. We call it “government.”

re: #25 Charles Johnson

Charging him with desertion is not the same as his being convicted of desertion. It’s a process starting UCMJ Court Martial proceedings. He might still end up being convicted, being dishonorably discharged, and/or serve time, or he might convince the Court Martial that his actions did not constitute desertion.

His attorney will likely move towards some kind of deal along the lines of dishonorable discharge and reduction in rank, in lieu of any prison time so as to bring the case to a close.

Since the case has been under investigation for a while now, I think we’ll see a pretty quick resolution on this.

I’m crossing my fingers that there’s a plea deal. Article 85 of the UCMJ defines desertion very clearly and if the Army can prove that Bergdahl left his post with the intent to remain absent then he’s guilty as charged. Even if he is guilty I’d say that a reduction in rate to E-1 and a Dishonorable Discharge are punishment enough.

re: #67 Higgs Boson’s Mate

I’m crossing my fingers that there’s a plea deal. Article 85 of the UCMJ defines desertion very clearly and if the Army can prove that Bergdahl left his post with the intent to remain absent then he’s guilty as charged. Even if he is guilty I’d say that a reduction in rate to E-1 and a Dishonorable Discharge are punishment enough.

Agreed, I think this is about appearance more than anything else. Charge desertion, accept plea deal involving busting him down in rank and dishonorably discharging him, and consider the matter closed. He’s been properly punished, Army makes clear that desertion will not be tolerated, and we can move on…well, some of us can, the wingnuts will screech that he should have been hanged. But, as a wise man once said, “you can’t fix stupid.”

Plastic waste taints the ocean floors

Billions of tiny plastic fragments are littering each square kilometre of the deep sea, an analysis of sea-floor sediments suggests1. Although the study sampled a small number of sites, the locations ranged from the subpolar Atlantic to the Indian Ocean, enabling researchers to design future studies that could determine where much of the plastic manufactured by humans ends up.

Plastic waste has long been recognized as a problem for the oceans: it pollutes beaches; accumulates in floating, nation-sized ‘garbage patches’; and is consumed by seabirds, fish and other creatures. In a study published last week2, scientists estimated that more than 250,000 tonnes of plastic litter the ocean’s surface.

Yet that is only a minuscule fraction of the plastic produced each year, says Richard Thompson, a marine biologist at Plymouth University, UK. Slightly less than half of the material ends up recycled or in landfills, according to some studies, and much of the rest goes ‘missing’, he notes (see ‘Fate of ocean plastic remains a mystery’).

“What have the Romans ever done for us, eh?”

That was part of how Rome answered such questions. Roads meant commerce and economic growth, but they also meant that if an area rebelled the legions could get there faster than armies could have done in previous eras.

As with many successful things relating to politics, both the initials SPQR and the roads built under those letters had symbolic value and those symbols were both symbols of fear and hope.

The one that drives me batty is the loons who want to privatize the Post Office, or as they put it, “End the Government’s monopoly on first class mail”. They talk about how the USPS loses money every year, and how FedEx could do it better.

I say, “Sure. But FedEx has to put a post office in every podunk town in America and staff it, and deliver to every address in America, every day, regardless of whether or not that office or that delivery can be done at a profit.”

This leads to hemming and hawing and mumbling about, “Well, SOME services might have to go…”

Part of how FedEx makes their profit… is that for small towns and rural routes, they deliver their FedEx envelope to the post office and let USPS take it the last miles.

Libertarians don’t know how to handle the “Roads” question so they mock it.

This is America, 2015:

Creationist museum feels right at home in Idaho

[…]

Idaho is conservative enough to embrace the museum that Lutz helped create, an as-yet-modest facility dedicated to the idea that Earth is a mere 6,000 years old. That dinosaurs and men cavorted together. That all those fossils dug up by archaeologists came into being because of the flood.

Yes. That flood.

The Northwest Science Museum’s board of directors has big plans here in one of America’s most conservative states — where the population is more than 80% white, the electorate voted for a Republican president in the last seven elections and prayer is top of mind.

When the group finally raises the necessary $150 million, its members plan to erect a 350,000-square-foot facility with a full-sized ark that will rise above Interstate 84 somewhere between Boise and Nampa.

[…]

The article touches on various theocratic traits currently running in Idaho.

But that they want to raise $150 million for a religious indoctrination center will take them to the next level.

[…] Nor could he have been at any of the so-called elite colleges and universities in this country. Their enforcement of political correctness would have driven him out, as it does with anyone who disagrees with their definition of what is proper speech.

As the socialists who call themselves “progressive” continue to undermine the moral foundations of American culture, I wonder who will be next — the Christian student who dares to warn others that they will go to hell if they reject Jesus? The truly liberal faculty member who allows debates between advocates of creationism and evolutionism?

Isn’t it about time that Americans woke up to the fact that the progressives, like the emperor in the fairy tale, have no clothes?

There’s a reason why both these ideologies have a lot of appeal with young people. I mean I understand what draws someone to both ideologies. You hear grandiose talk about liberty or equality and you think YES! The ideology for me but if you’re a details guy and I sure am, you just see the reality. I’ve known many a Libertarian over the years due to my alma mater’s economics program. A lot of them were honestly nice people but people who had heard economics from one perspective.

When you argue with these kinds of folks, they almost invariably talk as if everything is a small town, that every business is a Sole Proprietorship with a handful of employees. They speak of employers as if they’re all Bob the Business Owner with his 5 employees, all of whom could go get another job any time. It’s never BobCorp, the multinational that is the largest employer in town, and if you don’t work there, you don’t work.

Why? Because Libertarian economics only actually works when everyone has pretty much equal power, money, and knowledge. To the extent it departs from that, it works less and less well.

Oil Services giant to pay $232.7 million to end Justice Department investigation into work for Iran, Sudan
By NICOLE HONG
Updated March 25, 2015 3:53 p.m. ET

Schlumberger Ltd., the world’s largest oil-field services company, has agreed to pay $232.7 million for violating U.S. sanctions in Iran and Sudan, part of the government’s extended crackdown on companies doing business with countries the U.S. has declared off limits.

The U.S. Justice Department is expected to announce the plea agreement Wednesday afternoon, according to a person familiar with the situation. As part of the agreement, Schlumberger is expected to pay a $155.1 million criminal fine—the biggest criminal fine ever imposed for a U.S. sanctions violation—and forfeit $77.6 million in illegally obtained profits, according to the person.

Schlumberger Oilfield Holdings Ltd., a Schlumberger subsidiary, is expected to plead guilty to conspiring to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA, which allows the government to block transactions with countries under sanctions.

The agreement caps a six-year investigation by the Justice Department and the U.S. Commerce Department. Details of the deal between government lawyers and Schlumberger were completed on Wednesday, according to the person familiar with the situation. More

wsj.com

Drop in the bucket, considering that Schlumberger operates in 85 countries, having one of its headquarters in Houston. However, it appears to be having a “tough time” since oil prices have fallen and announced a 9K job reduction in Jan.

Speaking of Iran,we’ve got this story from The Hill:

US reportedly mulling airstrikes in Tikrit

Washington is reportedly considering launching airstrikes to support Iraqi forces and Iran-backed Shiite militia battling the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Tikrit — a move that could bring the U.S. closer to cooperation with Iran.

The potential airstrikes are “being discussed at a high level” and could be only days or weeks away, a U.S. official told Agence France-Presse.

The statement comes after the Pentagon confirmed Monday that the U.S. has begun been providing intelligence for Iraqi forces in Tikrit for “several days” — the first public confirmation of U.S. involvement in the battle that’s been supported by Shiite militia with backing from Iran.

The intelligence is being gathered by drones, and then provided to Iraqi forces, said Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren. He said Iraq requested the intelligence support, and that he was confident it was not being shared directly with Iran.

The BBC has also confirmed US drone recon over Tikrit.

From everything I’ve ever heard about Scientology, I cannot grasp why any human with the ability to form complete sentences doesn’t just say, “Are you kidding me?” when told its major tenets.

The trick is that they don’t reveal the tenets all at once. Originally you had to go through years of grooming (for which you paid handsomely) before they’d reveal the really weird stuff, at which point you had a large sunk investment (both psychologically and monetarily) and were hooked. Nowadays it’s all out on the net, so it’s probably harder to rope in new people than it once was, but still there are going to be some people who respond to the personal approach the Scientologists favor, and don’t go checking things out for themselves.

That’s also true of pretty much all religions. Scientology is just newer. If someone made up Christianity right now, most of us would laugh them out of the room.

In the case of Scientology, the new converts are not told the insane things that Scientologists believe. This stuff is revealed after they’ve disconnected from their friends and have been parted with tons of cash, so they’re totally emotionally invested.

Walker supported the gay marriage ban as a legislator before he became governor. But as polls have shown more support for same-sex marriage he has repeatedly answered questions about the ban by saying his opinion doesn’t matter because a governor can’t change the constitution.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the ban a day before the letter was dated, legalizing gay marriage in the state.

A Walker campaign spokeswoman didn’t immediately return a message.

I hope this works. Those Daesh bastards are holding to the death like Tikrit was Shuri Castle, Okinawa back in 1945. The problem the various Iraqi forces face is that the tactics was used against Japanese positions containing Okinawan civilians back then are now considered war crimes.* Even the more fanatical Shia militia leaders understand that a “Ben Tre solution” is not an option in Tikrit, so they’ve slowed down and now they’re asking for help.

Of course willing to work in proximity to Iranian forces is going to scare the Saudis at least a little. But it may make Iran more likely to sign a decent nuclear deal if it leads to the forces they’re backing taking fewer casualties.

*: The sentence marked should not be read as a moral judgement, it is simply a statement of fact that some tactics used during World war II have since been outlawed. I of course do not favor inflicting civilian casualties.

The House Ways and Means advances the estate tax repeal on party lines (no surprises there) 22-10. The GOP has no plan for how to make up the lost revenue, other than to push the burden on to those least able to afford it.

The estate tax hits only those individuals who have estates in excess of $5.4 million per person ($10.9 million for a married couple) and indexed for inflation.

This isn’t something nearly all Americans have to even think about. It’s a tax on the rich, and the GOP is trying to repeal the tax that affects only the rich without any care what the government will do to make up the lost revenue.

That lost revenue? $269 billion over 10 years. That’s a whole lot of infrastructure that can’t be built (among other things). Heck, that’s even a bunch of F-35 planes (so they can be hangar queens).

It shows just how fiscally irresponsible the GOP truly is, and how far they’re willing to go in their anti-tax mantra to bring government to its knees.

Good idea re: Posse Commitatus but it will never happen. The level of fear of the Federal government a proposed repeal of that law would generate would make it impossible for such a bill to pass the Senate. There are simply too many states where too much of the population is wary of the federal government.

Pretty sure they can’t just give someone a dishonorable discharge without charging them with an offense under the UCMJ first.

A dishonorable discharge (DD) can only be handed down to an enlisted member by a general court-martial. Dishonorable discharges are handed down for what the military considers the most reprehensible conduct. This type of discharge may be rendered only by conviction at a general court-martial for serious offenses (e.g., desertion, sexual assault, murder, etc.) that call for dishonorable discharge as part of the sentence.
