Food for thought:

The symbol for Rafael Cruz’s “Purifying Fire” ministry, where he served as the director:

and the symbol his son chose for his political campaign:

I’m sure the cleansing flame symbolism is just a coincidence.

It’s not that out of line. Consider the symbols of two very liberal denominations - the US and United Methodists. I’m on my phone so I am not able to link right now but both use flame symbolism.

I’ve been trying to figure out the geopolitics of this compared to the fight against ISIL in Iraq, other than the fact that Yemen is a gulf state and while the Houthis say this is a “revolution”, neighboring states, the UN and others call it a “coup d’état”. And how does AQAP figure into the entire thing as well. Did their activities lay the ground work for this Houthi takeover?

Of course, that’s apparent. My own instinct is to condemn royalty and urge democratic solutions. But are the radicals winning hearts and minds with their tactics? It seems fairly contradictory to the situation there when you see this (not that I trust Putin & Co). But it just seems like mass slaughter is no solution, either, from either side.

One of the Machiavellian games that the Saudi rulers play is to finance and encourage the spread of radical Wahabism while they themselves wallow in Western decadence. That is going to catch up with them big-time at some point.

Right. We think we need the oil, or at least some in our govt does. And it’s one of the reasons that alternative, renewable energy, should be one of our top priorities. I don’t think that for the Rs (and even some Ds) renewables are a top priority. And that’s scary, in light of climate change.

Things are changing rapidly, and most don’t like it, either ordinary people or those in power, but people can’t be held in captivity over the repressive and reactionary ideologies that should be apparent to everyone.

We have had since 1973 to rethink things but have failed to do so. If we truly had a libertarian “free market” it would not favor one source of energy over another, nor would it make the US military available to guarantee the supply of a certain product from a certain politically unstable and socially backward part of the world.

But failing to intervene would have the same disastrous effects on our economy as it would have had if the government had not intervened in the banking crisis in 2008…

Free f*ing market, indeed…

17 Justanotherhuman  Mar 26, 2015 3:05:27am

And, of course, it’s not just us in the US. Back around 1970, I posed the question to my political friends: What kind of effect are greenhouse gases going to have on the planet if developing countries ever reach the status of “middle class” as we have in the US with our use of the present energy sources? Well we’re seeing the effects of that, 45 yrs later.

Future Climate Change

epa.gov

It’s not only our usage of fossil fuels and the effects of damage to the planet by their use, it’s every country on the planet—we’ve just lead the world in their use. And we’re all at the mercies of those who make policies and money from them.

18 Justanotherhuman  Mar 26, 2015 3:13:19am

Frankly, I wouldn’t want either of these 2 scenarios; there has to be a middle for all of us.

“The USA has the largest per capita footprint in the world - a footprint of 9.57 hectares. If everyone on the planet was to live like the average American, we would need 5 planets to sustain everyone. At a footprint of 9.57 hectares per person, our planet’s biocapacity would only be able support about 1.2 billion people - far less than the 6 billion we have on Earth. On the other end of the spectrum, if everyone lived like those residing in Bangladesh, where the average footprint is only 0.5 hectares, then the earth could support roughly 22 billion people.”

So, this guy had gambling debt or his girlfriend broke up with him?

I imagine the investigation will center on his motives. He was a German citizen, and that’s all we know so far.

On Bloomberg, they talked about the cabin door regulation changes after 9/11. Pilots were opposed to the requirement that the cabin door be locked, but settled for a mechanism to unlock it near the pilots’ seats and the presence of another flight crew member in the cockpit if one pilot had to leave to use the head.

It appears these safeguards were not enough in this case.

Hmmm, statistics. We all know that flying is still statistically safer than driving, but in this case, it was not an accident.

I suppose It would be nigh unto impossible to compare, but I wonder how many traffic accidents are caused intentionally?

I only know of one case, a fellow distressed over his girlfriend breaking up with him that he (most likely) intentionally drove his truck over a cliff (after taking out an insurance policy naming her as beneficiary).

Insurance investigators look hard at single-car highspeed crashes into trees, overpasses or other obstacles. They’re more suspicious if the time of day and lighting are favorable. It’s a hard one to win, even with the use of psychological autopsy.

Considering how it used to be (don’t know if it still is) that life insurance wouldn’t pay out on a suicide (IIRC), running off the road would seem (to such a tortured soul) to be a way out that would ensure the heirs the money. But to take 150 other people with you because you’re in over your head in gambling debts and romantic troubles? Geez.

In which case, it would fall to them (any subcontractors) and Airbus to slug it out in court over responsibility - whether it was a manufacturing defect or a service/servicing defect.

It still falls on the airline because of whatever policies they have/should have in place to determine the competencies of the pilots and crew.

Huh. Way bigger number than I might have thought. Don’t recall the number but someone in science fiction ran some numbers. How long would it take humanity to occupy our galactic arm, or finally the whole thing given FTL travel? It seems we are to a big unbalanced start. Whatever that guys number was, it may have been too long. In fiction FTL or aliens come along just in time. Faved for reference.

Well this ain’t fiction and if ya ask me real population control is a big part of the equation. There is no benefit to overpopulation. It’s disaster awaiting a moment. Manage the population and we can all live well and enjoy progress. In a biological sense population control always happens. It’s a question of voluntary, involuntary or apocalyptic.

Wouldn’t the plaintiffs have to demonstrate that the airline had a reason for concern that it missed? It’s not always visible that someone is suicidal.

The news about the pilot deliberately crashing the plane is stunning. A mechanical defect, or weather related crash is one thing and most humans can handle that type of news.

When it is a human cause explanations get hard to accept. There may be no ‘why’ ever found. This will shake all people and make everyone wonder about the people in control of your flight.

How do you fix or prevent this? You really can’t.

Taitz filed the lawsuit against IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, acting Social Security Administration Commissioner Carolyn Colvin, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, President Barack Obama, John Does who steal Social Security numbers and other identifications, and Jane Does who seek asylum.

Does the airline have a mental health evaluation program in place?
How frequently does the airline check?
Were there signs missed by supervisors/staff that should have alerted them that the crew might have problems?
Was staff/supervisors trained to even look for mental health problems?

Do other airlines have programs in place? (does the airline meet the standards set by other airlines, etc.)

These are all questions that will likely be sorted out in coming weeks, months, and years in lawsuits by families against the airline (and the parent corporation Lufthansa).

Heck, they would fire people even when corporate profits were going up, because they weren’t going up fast enough.

So, no, corporations don’t always make people work harder (they may try to get same output from smaller workforce, but many sectors have already maxed out on workplace efficiencies).

93 lawhawk  Mar 26, 2015 7:09:32am

And this happened:

I thought I had seen every imaginable way to stoke the flames of anti-Muslim bigotry in America. There have been countless people on Fox News, certain Republican elected officials, the professional bigots, and even some right-wing “Christian” leaders serving up hate in various ways.

But these people all pale in comparison to Michael Sibley. You see, Sibley wasn’t content to just giving us the same old right-wing crap like Muslims wants to impose Islamic law so say goodbye to bacon cheeseburgers and whiskey and say hello to lamb kebobs and strong coffee served in small cups.

Nope, this self-described “patriot” planted a bomb at a national park in Georgia in the hopes that the public would think a Muslim did it. And yes, I know most haven’t heard about this incident. There’s not even a need to mention how different the media coverage would be have been if the bomber had actually been Muslim. I already detailed that scenario earlier this week in my article about a non-Muslim man that attacked federal officers at a U.S. airport with poison spray and a machete while carrying six homemade bombs in a duffel bag.

Sibley, who is 67 years old and lives in Roswell, Georgia, told FBI officers that he planted this bomb because in his view, “no one was paying attention to what was going on the world.” Apparently as a “patriot” he was going to maim or even kill his fellow Americans to wake them up to the threat facing America.

And what is this “threat” Sibley speaks of? Well, it’s pretty clear he’s talking Muslims. You see, according to the federal complaint, Sibley put some Muslim memorabilia in the backpack along with two “improvised explosive devices” (IEDs) he crafted.

We haven’t heard much about this incident because there wasn’t a loss of life (and without the bleeding, it doesn’t lead/lede the news). Rather, it turns out that upon deeper investigation that the bomber was trying to make it look like Muslims did it. The bomber? He was a white dude who wanted to stoke the Islamophobia with a false-flag bombing.

The bombing would have taken place in Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area’s Vickery Creek Park. Such a patriot that he saw no problem spilling the blood of Americans so as to inflame passions against Muslims.

West Virginia legislature passed a no-permit concealed carry bill this month.
The governor vetoed it.

“People are riled up about it,” Tomblin said of the bill (SB347), which would repeal legislation requiring residents to undergo a background check and complete a firearms safety course to receive a state permit needed to legally conceal carry a handgun.

Tomblin said the governor’s office has been inundated with calls and e-mails, urging him to either sign or veto the bill. However, he said much of the support for the bill’s passage is coming from out of state.

“We’ve heard a lot of concern from residents about it,” he said, adding, “Our law enforcement people are pretty much unanimously opposed to it.”

Can we get rid of the thinking that there are ever “gun discussions” going on in this country?

At The freedictionary.com discussion is defined as:

1. Consideration of a subject by a group; an earnest conversation.
2. A formal discourse on a topic; an exposition.

Sure, there are other definitions, but they all hold that there is purpose behind the back and forth talk between parties.

With guns in America, there are few discussions as there is very seldom an open mind with either one or the other party, especially if there are opposing views.

We need a better word to describe the banter when one brings up the topic of guns. I am not sure what it would be at this time. Maybe gun arguments. Argument is already considered discussion but it considers there is disagreement. And we sure have a ton of that!

re: #132 The Mother Of All Pies

Even better than that is that the GOP cut funding to the program that seeks out waste/fraud/graft in Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security. They cut more than a billion dollars.

Both the House and Senate budgets fail to include the $1.166 billion in funding the BCA sanctions in 2016 for reducing overpayments and fraud in the Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs, and the $395 million for combatting Medicare and Medicaid fraud. Congress provided the allowed amounts for fiscal year 2015 — $1.123 billion to combat fraud and overpayments in the disability programs and $361 million to address Medicare and Medicaid fraud — but under the new House and Senate budgets, this funding would end.

These program integrity activities have been found to save substantial sums, reduce program costs, and thereby lower budget deficits. For example, a key use of program integrity funding for Social Security and SSI is to conduct “continuing disability reviews” to weed out beneficiaries who have recovered from their impairments. The Social Security actuaries have found that these reviews save about $10 for every $1 they cost.

Similarly, program integrity activities to detect and stop erroneous payments and outright fraud in Medicare and Medicaid (including payments to doctors and hospitals that improperly bill or overbill the programs) saved about $8 for each dollar spent on such efforts in 2012-2014.

They cut spending, which will actually reduce revenues even further because of unrecovered fraud (which is something they constantly harp on for cost savings).

The $1 billion cut from the graft unit will mean lost revenues upwards of $8 billion. That means more than $7 billion will not be realized because of GOP fiscal irresponsibility.

And this same thinking translates to the IRS, which is unable to conduct as many audits to root out tax evasion and underpayments. Fewer audits means less chances that someone will be uncovered engaging in tax evasion.

They are waiting for a Murdoch or an Adelson to take them under their wings, declare them the leading lights of a young generation of hard-hitting journalists, and give them lots of money to continue being assholes in public.

re: #143 ObserverArt

THIS. Whatever you think of the topic of firearms, the following needs to be understood: The issue is driven by the partisans of both sides and moderates don’t really factor into the discussion. Both sides’ partisans actively dislike the other side and are not really willing to have an actual discussion with the other faction.

This is why tweets relating to guns are often so inflammatory.

Steve Beshear. “Heroin is a multidimensional monster and demands an array of tactics to support families, treat addicts and protect our communities. Senate Bill 192 is tough on traffickers who bring these deadly drugs into our communities, but compassionate toward those who report overdoses or who admit they need help for their addiction. I applaud our legislators for putting aside partisan interests for the greater good of all Kentuckians who have been affected by this devastating drug.”

Yup. Wrote about that yesterday. The GOP is pushing the estate tax repeal through the House (22-10 in yesterday’s vote). The repeal would save those making more than $5.4 million individually ($10.8 million for married couples) from the estate tax, but would reduce federal tax revenues by $269+ billion over 10 years.

This is a sop to the wealthy, and shifts the tax burden on to everyone else to make up for the shortfall.

Heck, that’s a big enough amount to buy a bunch of F-35s. Or rebuild a whole bunch of bridges and tunnels. Or even build out true HSR on the NEC. Or upgrade electric power grid. Or deal with backlog of NPS needs.

But the GOP wants to give the rich yet another tax break.

I like Bill Maher’s take, which is such a move is depriving legions of trust fund kiddies the “dignity of work.” The GOP, if it so serious about the need for folks to get out there, get backbreaking minimum wage jobs, so as to understand the “dignity of work,” then we should crank the estate tax up to 100% so that all those little tikes don’t get to skate through life on daddy’s money.

California attorney general asks court to allow her to refuse processing ballot initiative that calls for gay people to be executed - @USATODAY
usatoday.com

LOS ANGELES — California Attorney General Kamala Harris asked a state court Wednesday for an order allowing her to avoid processing a citizen-proposed anti-gay ballot measure that calls for executing gays with “bullets to the head.”

“Harris said the so-called “Sodomite Suppression Act” proposed and named by Huntington Beach attorney Matthew McLaughlin “not only threatens public safety, it is patently unconstitutional, utterly reprehensible and has no place in a civil society.”

“She filed an action asking the court for declaratory relief’ and judicial authorization allowing her to avoid issuing a title and summary for the proposal. An official state title and summary are necessary steps in authorizing a ballot initiative’s sponsors to seek the signatures needed to be placed before voters.

“Without the court order, Harris said she would be compelled by law to proceed with the measure, which would authorize the killing of gays and lesbians in the state.” More

It’s the same defense they pushed back when Bush wanted to take an axe to the “death tax,” that it wasn’t about helping the ultra-wealthy pass all of that money down to their kids, it was about keeping allowing Pa to pass down the family farm to his young’ins, instead of having it broke up after he died to pay the taxes. They portrayed it as being about helping this middle class family who didn’t have much passing what they did on to their kids, so they could use it to get a bit higher up the economic ladder.

Exactly. The “family farm” is an endangered species, if not already extinct, much like those “Ma and Pa stores” that we’re always told the GOP wants to help pass down to the next generation. When in reality, the stores they’re trying to save are the major corporations like Wal-Mart, who the Waltons would love to see a few more billion annually left in their pockets.

The estate tax threshold amounts were increased a few years back, and indexed to inflation so as to preserve family farms. That began in 2010 - increasing the threshold to $5 million and reducing the rate to 35% (from $3.5 million and 45% in 2009). The rate has since increased to 40%, but the threshold is now indexed to inflation, so the amount is $5.43 million for individuals.

There are a significant number of family-owned farms, but the estate tax is the least of their concerns for all but the largest of those farms.

Every family farmer I know is technically a “hobby farmer,” because at least one member of the family has a full-time job. The days of a single family maintaining a huge spread and making a living at it are largely gone. I suppose it can be done successfully at a smaller scale, but those folks are probably not going to be passing on millions to their kids in any event.

Pork is a big item in China, while beef here is invariably tough and expensive. So, when I get tired of eating fatty pork, the halal cafeteria offers the best alternative. Our uni has about 2,000 Uyghur students from Xinjiang, divided between two campuses. Now, there are also halal restaurants in town.

There’s a noodle dish at the cafeteria to die for. You have to be really hungry, though.

So, an air crash in the early stages of investigation not involving US pilots, crews, or airline, is now Obama Administration’s fault for not taking terrorism seriously? Even though the investigators at the crash scene have thus far ruled out terrorism?

As for the Bergdahl angle, these same folks were demanding the Admin get him back; but when they did, they complained that the cost was too high.

What the fuck was the Obama administration supposed to do about a German airliner in France? And secondly regarding Bergdahl. We get every man out. And if Bergdahl did give intelligence to the Taliban, isn’t it then a good thing we got him? I swear these people don’t even think. 281 Dark_Falcon  Mar 26, 2015 8:52:14am

“Why we can’t have nice things”, part 297:

Advocates fight against fake service dogs

Service dogs are a familiar sight in shopping malls, restaurants and airports. They wear colourful waistcoats, or vests, denoting their high level of training to assist people with disabilities. They include guide dogs for the blind, hearing dogs, seizure alert dogs and mental health service dogs.

But increasingly, according to qualified handlers, more and more people are falsely claiming their dog is a service animal.

California-based Canine Companions for Independence, a non-profit organisation that provides highly trained assistance dogs for people with disabilities, says “service dog fraud” is making it more and more difficult for genuine owners to be taken seriously.

“They have seen an increase in encounters with pet dogs, out in public, wearing service dog vests, who have obviously not been trained,” says spokeswoman Jeanine Konopelski.

In some cases the fake service dogs are observed behaving badly and there have been reports of people being bitten by these untrained animals, Konopelski said. She adds that it has resulted in some shop and restaurant owners adopting a more suspicious attitude towards anyone claiming their companion is a working dog.

Lamb is something sorely lacking in the American culinary experience. I had a great lamb biryani a couple weeks back.

My accountant gave me a reference for a second halal butcher in Philadelphia that sells lamb. Longer trek than the other one, but probably worth a try the next time I want to make a lamb stew.

There are both in the bay area (foodie heaven…), but Tibetan, at least, doesn’t have much in the way of vegetarian cuisine. Yes, they’re Buddhists, but they can’t grow vegetables in that climate, so there aren’t many vegetarians. There’s a Himalayan restaurant in my area that has vegetarian cuisine, but it’s very like Indian — which is a good place to go for veggies, by the way.

Tibetan cuisine, in Tibet anyway, relies heavily on meat and dairy products. Most veggies need to come from other areas.

That sounds like a good solution. I was hung up on conflicting needs of not having the pilot carry a cockpit key that could be taken by a hijacker, and the need to get back in if something happens to the other pilot, and didn’t see this obvious solution. Time to up my caffeine intake.

I concur in that something like that has to remain in consideration. But that doesn’t draw eyeballs so the media is going to run with the suicide/terrorism angle for all it is worth.

As for the locked cockpit door I would presume that is standard operating procedures that it has to remain locked at all times. (Though I would wonder how that coincides with leaving a single person in the cockpit.)

Suppose that there was some soft- or hardware mistake that made the pressing of the button unnecessary. I’m not sure it can happen in this particular way, but let’s assume. This doesn’t explain why the second pilot was locked out or Lubitz’s silence.

Let’s assume there was a stroke (he wasn’t dead till the end, breathing is heard on the audio). This doesn’t explain how the plane began to go down.

So either one assumes that there was a simultaneous hardware/software mistake *and* a stroke (which is pretty unlikely), or one assumes that he did it fully consciously.

The prosecutor has explained that pushing the button randomly would not have brought the plane down. And it makes sense, there must be some safety there. So there would have to be intent, even if that intent came from a damaged brain.

Anyway, as I mentioned, the breathing is heard on the audio. I assume it’s very easy to tell if somebody’s had stroke or not from that alone.

If the pilot falls forward onto the control wheel, the plane points down. If this happens with no alteration to the throttle, it goes down faster than a normal, deliberate descent.

In addition, Colombian police officers allegedly provided “protection for the DEA agents’ weapons and property during the parties,” the report states. Ten DEA agents later admitted attending the parties, and some of the agents received suspensions of two to 10 days.

The black box that is there is the cockpit voice recorder which recorded the spoken exchange between the pilot and co-pilot because we have the transcription of the last 30 minutes of this flight in its entirety.
[…]

At that moment the co-pilot was alone at the controls. It is then that the co-pilot uses the flight monitoring system button to put the plane into descend mode, I repeat, the pilot is in lone control of this Airbus 320, that the pilot is pressing the buttons of the flight monitoring system to put into action the descent mode.

The action of altitude selection could not be anything but deliberate.

Daher sei davon auszugehen, dass der Copilot bei vollem Bewusstsein und komplett handlungsfähig gewesen sei.

Medicare ‘doc fix’ bill passes House

Washington (CNN)In a rare moment of bipartisanship bringing House Speaker John Boehner and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi together, the House passed the so called “doc fix.” The House passed it overwhelmingly, 392-37.

“He has not spoken a single word the whole time,” said Robin. It is “not breathing of someone who just suffered a heart attack.” We have based the record “does not feel that he had panic”. Therefore, it can be assumed that the copilot was fully able to act with full consciousness and.

re: #376 Nyet

I assume from the prosecutor’s info (which is based on the black box analysis) that he specifically entered the descent mode. So it wasn’t about someone falling on the wheel.

The flight recorder records control inputs and aircraft speed, altitude and attitude information. It would present the same information whether the co-pilot slumped into the control column or he deliberately pushed it forward. If the flight recorder data demonstrates that the aircraft was in a controlled dive, as opposed to going inverted or partially inverted and oscillating in pitch as would have happened if the co-pilot slumped against the control column, then it was deliberate.

No downding, but please don’t talk like that. Saying a federal law enforcement agency “has been organized crime for years” is the sort of thing Alex Jones says.

Enforcing prohibition is one of the reasons that our law enforcement people have become corrupt and can’t be trusted. Understanding what the DEA is, is not Alex Jones territory. They clearly know that their mission is a sham, as the story about the prostitutes shows.

Are you in complete denial about what the DEA does to Americans who enjoy politically incorrect drugs? They actually lock peaceful people in jails and prisons.

The doc fix bill is a permanent plan instead of the 1-year extenders that have been needed since 1997. Had Congress not put in place a permanent plan, an extender would have been needed to address the 21% cut in doctor reimbursements that would have taken effect April 1.

The new proposal provides a gradual increase over the next couple of years, and then financial awards/penalties begin to kick in in 2019.

Cost over next 10 years from proposal? $214 billion. This doesn’t include CHIP funding for the next two years.

Instead of kicking in the awards/penalties sooner, which would save taxpayers even more, they pushed it off until 2019.

From what I could gather while listening to the prosecutor this morning, the co-pilot had to make several turns of the knob or button to achieve the descent. It was not just one movement.

I wasn’t assuming anything. The autopilots with which I have experience will disengage with a manual input to the aircraft controls. If the flight recorder records every button push then the prosecutor is likely correct. These aircraft are very complicated so I get squeamish when I perceive a rush to attribute the cause of a crash without a hell of a lot more investigation.

Twelve years ago, long before he nearly killed Floyd Dent, Officer Melendez had already cost the city millions of dollars in settlements and racked up more brutality complaints than any other officer in all of Detroit. In 1996, Melendez shot and killed an unarmed man, Lou Adkins, who witnesses said was on the ground and posed no harm when Melendez shot him, execution style, 11 times. The city of Detroit paid $1 million to Lou’s family in a wrongful death suit, but Melendez kept his job. Complaint after complaint on Bill Melendez has been filed for illegally planting evidence.

I would, but it’s really hot in here, and I’m way too tired from the heat. I’ll do some make-up mocking when in a more comfortable environment.

The best part is that even if this were true, you’d have to be out of your mind to think conservatives are somehow the champions of fighting income inequality.

Conservatives have never met a benefit to the American populace as a whole that they didn’t despise and regard as Marxism.

Nice, sympathetic gesture. They lost their son, too, after all.

The stupid DailySignal counts payroll withholding separately from income tax and also counts Social Security and Medicare as “taxes” in order to come up with their shit talking point.

Also they claim “higher marginal tax rates discourages people from earning more” WHAT A LOAD OF BULLSHIT.

Young Conservatives are the saddest Conservatives because they’ve been left behind by a world they can’t understand while they’re still young, instead of it being something that happens to old people who failed to improve with the rest of us. They were born already outmoded, and incapable of even interacting with their own generation.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK:

My first thought was to wonder again why ‘Vox Day’ hasn’t joined ISIS, since his screed basically boils down to The solution to disaffected and depressed men is to enslave women”. How anyone can reach that conclusion after the events of the past 14.5 years I cannot fathom.

The upside that I see is that women being able to be chosey in their mating habits might help cut down on the number of nutbars like Vox Day in the world.

Yes, I’m going to go trash my portfolio because I had such a good year in 2014 that my gains over a certain threshold are going to be taxed at a higher rate.

Should ask them if they think workers are going to work less hard if the minimum wage is raised.

That’s something I’ve always noticed, going all the way back to when I was young enough to be in a young conservative/GOP group. There was always something off-putting about a bunch of (usually white) guys running around espousing their grandparents’ political views.

Heh actually what’s really sad is a lot of them are more reactionary than their grandparents. Ted Cruz would be young enough to be Goldwater or Ford’s grandson but he’s far more right wing as are many of the other GOP young guns. And I’m not talking economics. I’m talking social issues.

Considering how out there Ted’s father is, I really can’t imagine how bad his grandfather was. I do not expect that he was a Goldwater or Ford type.

Heh true but for all we know. After all the Bush’s have actually gotten more conservative as generations go. Prescott was a Rockefeller Republican type. H.W Bush is a conservative but not as right wing as his sons. And George P. Bush (Jeb’s son) is supposed to be really right wing. I think I heard that he gave money to Cruz. when Cruz ran for Senate. I am just saying that it’s amazing that I can look at conservative leaders from before I was born and see more social liberalism from them in people prominent conservatives from today.

Republicans are definitely getting worse, but I don’t know if that’s because Conservatives got worse, or because they chased all the progressives out of what was once the party of Lincoln, and can now let their freak flags fly.

re: #365 No Country For Old Haters

Someone who’s having a stroke could do absolutely anything without meaning to. A partially functioning brain trained to fly a plane might try to operate the vehicle.

I have a brother that had a transient stroke and it knocked out his left side for a brief moment. He was in his car with his youngest daughter and as the stroke hit, his left arm went numb and pulled his hand down on the steering wheel and the car drifted to the left going into the wrong lane. Luckily his daughter was alert and smart enough to grab the wheel and pull the car back into the proper lane.

he was conscience the whole time it was going on and couldn’t control it from happening. He was checked by his doctor for any lingering effects and what the cause might have been. He was later cleared with the doctor saying it sometimes happens if there is a momentary blockage of a vein in your head.

He is now 73, and never had another attack. He was probably in his mid-40s when all that happened.

Haven’t finished reading the thread yet so maybe this is already addressed, but when officers are busted planting evidence on people, are they ever themselves charged with possession of a controlled substance?
