AZ GOP Lawmaker Suggests Law Requiring Church Attendance

Separation of church and state, what a concept

Arizona State Senator Sylvia Allen, who is a Republican if you can believe that, suggested this week (while explaining her vote for a bill that would allow people to carry guns basically everywhere) that Arizona lawmakers should debate a bill to force citizens to attend church on Sunday. You can’t make this stuff up.

Republican Arizona Senator Sylvia Allen suggested this week that lawmakers should debate forcing people to attend church services once a week.

Allen acknowledged such a law would never be allowed, but floated as an idea to create what she described as a much-needed “moral rebirth of this country.”

“How we get to back to a moral rebirth of this country, I don’t know, since we are slowly eroding religion at every opportunity that we have,” Allen said. “Probably we should be debating a bill requiring every American to attend a church of their choice on Sunday to see if we can get back to having a moral rebirth.”

Sylvia Allen also believes the Earth is 6,000 years old, and therefore we don’t need any environmental laws to regulate uranium mining.

YouTube

And Allen believes strongly in the whacked out far right “Agenda 21” conspiracy theory, and thinks it’s replacing the US Constitution with a commie government. Yes, she really does.

YouTube

This has been your daily glimpse at how insane the Republican Party has become.

I’d just start my own church.
It would involve adult beverages, cookouts and great music.

Oh, and lots of cats and dogs.

I’m also wondering (yes I am!) how much further she can backcomb and tease that hair, and how many cans of hairspray she goes through each week.

A moral rebirth, or just the afterbirth of a completely insane idea? Definitely the latter.

She’ll waste everyone’s time - and taxpayer dollars - with this crap.

And these people still seem to ignore the purpose of the 1st Amendment. It’s to protect the rest of us from the likes of her and her ilk who want to subvert the law and use it to impose their religious views on the rest of us.

Much like how Indiana is trying to do the same by legitimizing discrimination by couching it in the name of religious freedom.

“How we get to back to a moral rebirth of this country, I don’t know, since we are slowly eroding religion at every opportunity that we have,” Allen said.

Their religion is eroding because they turned it into a justification for every mean spirited, half-assed idea that came into their heads. Having eschewed all of history save for the years of the Reagan presidency they’re too fucking ignorant to know that when religion meddles in politics, politics returns the favor.

Agreed.

As I put it in my most recent page:

the church, at it’s best, becomes a support group in it’s corporate worship, helping it’s members to perfect the real worship of God - the living of good and loving lives helping and loving anyone and everyone by living the Way of Jesus in this world. This world. Again - This. World. Not the next. Imagine there is no heaven and you’ll be closer to it than you ever were before.

Deep thoughts from the right.

I wonder if he thinks it’s okay for liberals to refuse to serve him because he’s a right wing shit for brains. It would be wrong of a gay privately owned business to demand the right to refuse to serve straight people. The difference of course is gay business owners aren’t asking the government to let them discriminate. Really, I’m half tempted to pretend to be gay at one of these stores just to show them how stupid their “religious beliefs” are. you are providing a secular service, you don’t get to claim your religious beliefs won’t allow you to provide services to certain people. For fuck sake, we had this argument years ago when bigots wanted to deny people service because of their race and now the bigots want to claim it’s okay to deny people service because of their esxuality.

There is always the inverse option:

266 HappyWarrior  Mar 26, 2015 10:15:25pm

Just refuse service to the first person you see pull into your establishment’s parking lot with a right wing bumper sticker and go sorry “My religious beliefs find conservatism to be immoral, I can’t serve you.” They’d get pissed. The right wing answer is “Well the market will punish them” and yes that may be true but that’s not the point. When you’re operating a business in the public sphere, you don’t get to pick and discriminate against people. I guarantee you none of these Christian bakers have turned away divorcees even though the Bible also considers divorce immoral. If you want to believe homosexuality is immoral, that’s fine, I think you’re wrong but I can’t stop you from believing that but once you enter the public market, you don’t get to pick and choose. And I agree, this is definitely their reaction because they know they’re getting their asses kicked during the marriage equality debate. It’s sad. A large part of the country is progressing on this issue while another is doubling down on their anti-gay bigotry.

Well, he wouldn’t, would he? From the reports I’ve read, flying was not only his vocation, but his avocation as well.

I’ve suffered from clinical depression a few times throughout my life, and you wouldn’t want me as your pilot, even if I told you everything was “OK” with me. A clever person knows how to answer the questions and even meds don’t really help when something (or someone) obsesses you and they sometimes screw with your recovery as well. And there’s always a “trigger” which could plunge you into the depths of suicide ideation, but for me, it was always a cry for help, which I sought on my own.

“Illness” is rather broad. Could be anything from a bad sinus infection to terminal cancer. Though I imagine something farther towards the cancer end of the spectrum might have caused or contributed to the depression he supposedly was suffering.

There is a pervasive sentiment in American society that girls can’t (or shouldn’t) do STEM subjects. And even when they can, adolescent girls face a stigma of being too nerdy to attract boys, so some will feign disinterest to be more “girly.” As a science teacher, I tried to fight this perception, but it’s difficult to convince a girl that she’s more than capable of designing a toothpick bridge, no matter what her dimbulb boyfriend says.

There’s seems to be a similar social problem in China, but parents here will push a child to excel in everything.

Girls in China don’t get that much in school, but as they approach their mid-20s, there is overwhelming parental and societal pressure to find a BF, get married and pop out a kid by age 30. Young women who pursue graduate degrees or careers run the risk of becoming “leftover” women, because women in China are supposed to marry up, and men marry down. Nevertheless, quite a few of my female students here say the hell with that shit and go onto further study.

Not in a good way. There has been a sharp increase in human trafficking from neighboring countries like Vietnam and Laos, and some isolated cases of country girls disappearing suddenly.

Chinese men are overwhelmingly sexist. The younger generation are somewhat better, but the older guys are pretty irredeemable. It’s going to take decades for real gender equality to catch on here.

357 Justanotherhuman  Mar 27, 2015 6:26:05am

The US is so behind in policies other countries take for granted. Maternity or paternity leave, for instance. I think it’s important for parents to be able to bond with their infants and both mothers and fathers should be able to take at least 6 mos, with pay, to do this. What happens, though, is that women are the ones who generally leave the workforce and stay home when their kids are small, sometimes out of a sense of guilt; it’s the rare male who becomes a “house husband”, unless it’s a matter of who makes the most money.

Nevertheless, we don’t favor parents in the US, in spite of the rhetoric. And this impacts women the most.

Part of the sexism there, no doubt. Even in this country, when men are laid off and have to stay home and/or look for another job, they generally have few skills in child care and house keeping, at least the ones I’ve encountered. And it’s not as though they’re incapable of learning, they simply think it’s all “women’s work”.

I went to elementary school in a mostly black and Latino neighborhood where I was picked on a bit for being bookish and nerdy, but there were kids who stood up for me as well.

Yeah, that’s a thing in white working class neighborhoods where my kids spent a lot of time (out of economic necessity we had to live there), even though they were exposed to educated people.

A genuine “anti-intellectual” sentiment resides in those kinds of neighborhoods often passed on by the parents. More important to get a job right out of HS, or even quit altogether and work to get some money, out of short-sightedness and lack of alternatives and sometimes, help w/family finances, although that wasn’t a huge issue.

Yeah, I had a number of black and Latino kids who stood up for me, I think it was because they had picked up from their parents that it was good to have an educated friend.

Here in Columbus and just down the street and around the corner from where I live there is a previous middle school the city turned into an all-girls middle school academy to push mostly inner city girls into sciences without boys doing stupid boy things. I think it is an elective school that kids from all over the city can come to, but seems to have a bit of a “no-no” attached to it since it is inner city.

Hey, if it helps inner city girls get a jump start on some of the bigger schools and all the private and charter schools…I see it as a plus.

Interesting read all right. I guess that they can all go out to their yachts and sulk.

That’s the thing about these billionaires, and even millionaires. They have their own self-constructed safety nets. An Open Letter to States Considering Imposing Discrimination Laws
Posted by Jeremy, Yelp CEO

…it is unconscionable to imagine that Yelp would create, maintain, or expand a significant business presence in any state that encouraged discrimination by businesses against our employees, or consumers at large. I encourage states that are considering passing laws like the one rejected by Arizona or adopted by Indiana to reconsider and abandon these discriminatory actions. (We’re looking at you, Arkansas.)

I hope that in the future the legislatures in the nineteen states that have these laws on the books will reconsider their actions. In the mean time, Yelp will make every effort to expand its corporate presence only in states that do not have these laws allowing for discrimination on the books.

I also hope that other companies will draw a similar line in the sand for equality on behalf of their employees and the greater public to persuade legislators to do the right thing and stop or rescind these harmful laws.

Turned around after about 20 feet and discovered she was taking the cat for a drag.

I put leads on my two cats as “training” practice for an upcoming move. The moment I snapped the harness around the one cat and put it down it simply sat down and looked at me with that ‘you can’t be serious’ expression. And then refused to budge from that spot until I took the harness off.

The other cat saw me looking at it while holding the harness and simply sprinted upstairs and hid under the bed.

Ignoring James Baker of course. Or that Nixon and Kissinger limited Israel’s advances after holding off the initial onslaught in the Yom Kippur War. Or LBJ likewise limited Israel’s advances to avoid capturing Damascus and Cairo.

The latter two were politically motivated as a result of the Cold War, but had Israel captured the capitals of those two countries in either 1967 or 1973, the Middle East would look radically different and quite possibly have resulted in a more stable region as those countries would not have fomented violence against Israel thereafter. As long as the evaluations are designed to do nothing more than identify those pilots who pose a danger to their passengers I’m all for it. There’s a tendency in situations like this one for companies to over react and the consequence of that might be to deprive capable pilots who, for instance, suffer from all-too-common mild depression of their jobs. Finally, I think that some of those poor individuals who are most deeply disturbed have an uncanny knack for gaming the system.

Agreed. But no testing at all — that’s incompetence. This particular pilot was reportedly suffering from ‘severe’ depression back when he took the leave from flight school, and was treated for more than a year. I’ll wait to see a reputable report, but I do think that’s cause for alarm.

And I believe that our society does have ‘good enough’ testing to tell the difference between severe and mild depression.

True, but so were we by sending Israel Standard ARM (Anti-Radiation Missiles) to knock out Egyptian SA-6 missile radars, first generation Paveway Laser-Guided Bombs, and TOW missiles to knock out Egyptian, Jordanian, Syrian, and Iraqi tanks, We were justified in sending such weapons, and you’re right that the USSR was even more deeply involved, but we still had to be careful least Moscow decide to openly intervene.

The need to limit superpower conflict often meant wars could not be fought to a proper conclusion during the Cold War, which meant more war later. That remains a tragic outcome, but direct conflict between the US and the Soviet Union would have been an even worse outcome.

Actually, the real issue is that Iran is supporting the Houthi rebels. We don’t want to get into conflict with Iran right now because it would scuttle any nuclear deal we might otherwise get.

Yemen may scuttle a deal anyways, though so far Iran hasn’t condemned the US over the Saudi intervention yet, which is telling.

As a guy who grew up with Schumer attending every single one of my graduation ceremonies from grade school to law school, I’d love to see that happen.

I’ve seen a few people say that Warren should run for the position, in the hope of swinging the caucus further to the rightleft, as if Schumer (or Durbin) aren’t sufficiently liberal.

North Korean elites get their Marie Antoinette groove on:

North Korea’s well-to-do feast on French baguettes

French-trained chefs are cooking up a storm in Pyongyang where North Korea’s privileged classes are devouring their baguettes, a pro-North newspaper reported on Wednesday, even as much of the population outside the capital struggles to feed itself.

The Kumkop General Foodstuff Factory for Sportspersons, which was established in 2011, sent its pastry chefs to train in France last year as part of a drive to become a world-class food plant, the Choson Sinbo said.

SNIP

Pyongyang is home to most of the North’s wealthy and educated class, as well as bureaucrats and a growing middle class.

But in the countryside, many do not know where their next meal is coming from. The United Nations has said over a quarter of all children are malnourished.

So Harry Reid is retiring at the end of his term. The big questions now are who will succeed him as minority leader.

The big money seems to be falling on either Chuck Schumer or Dick Durbin.

The real question is whether either Schumer or Durbin can grow the Democratic caucus in the Senate, winning back seats lost, etc., and running the caucus effectively.

Schumer seems like he’d be the better fit. Durbin and Warren are probably more closer to where I stand ideologically but I think Schumer temperament wise is better for the job and I do think the leadership needs to get younger in both Houses.

War with Iran would make the Iraq War 2 look like a cake walk.

Years back, the unrest and instability in Yemen would have resulted in calls for the US to act unilaterally and to do so with or without a coalition. Now, Saudi Arabia and other regional powers are taking action, and the US is in the background.

Not sure if that is an improvement or a setback, since the outcome is still in doubt, but it is clear that the right wing thinks that the failure to drop bombs on Iran is an ongoing failure, even though they cannot identify who, what, where, and how to bomb Iran in a manner that makes any sense. The right wing proposes bombing for the sake of bombing, without identifying other means or that the outcomes that might be worse (like say radicalizing a population against the US that might actually favor the US or is at least neutral towards the US).

True, that. I suspect that the rollover in Iraq gave far too many people the impression that a war with Iran would go the same way. Among the many things they overlook is that Iran can bring tanker traffic through the Gulf of Hormuz to a screeching halt. And, as always, they refuse to contemplate the aftereffects of another war in the ME.

The GOP, which has seen its last Jewish Congressman booted because he was insufficiently right wing Teahadi (Cantor), and last Jewish senator years back (Specter) switch parties, yeah, they’re the pro-Jewish ones.

Chuckles is trying to claim that Democrats are trying to somehow pivot to be more pro-Israel/pro-Jewish, even though the GOP is cravenly engaging in identity politics without care for consequences. Their invite of Netanyahu was designed to get a pro-GOP Israeli reelected; their policies mesh with Netanyahu’s view on Iran, but that’s as far as it goes.

The GOP has no clue about Israel, its people, culture, or needs.

That’s how you get people like Carson wondering what the point of a parliamentary system and who is this Labor and Likud (why don’t they elect people like they do in the US).

The worst of the worst on the right wing are all about supporting Israel so long as it furthers their own religious beliefs and views for an End Times outcome.

Giving Native Americans the legal right to use peyote as part of their religion is exactly the same as letting Christians discriminate against LGBT, dontcha know?

The Federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act was intended to correct what Congress felt to be a bad Supreme Court decision that gave government too much power over religious practice. It directed the courts to use different standards and set a number of rules to protect religious organizations. It was a good law, but the name is now being taken for laws intended to keep bakers from having to bake wedding cakes for gay couples.

But I don’t think that stereotypical case is about religious practice. If two men want a cake with two groom figures on top of it, that’s their business. You’re the baker, just bake the damn cake. On the other hand, in those same two men want to get married in a church that does not approve of their union, as a religious institution the church should be able to refuse them. But no one is talking about forcing the church to allow such a ceremony, and churches and bakeries are not the same type of place.

Mind you, Bharara was one of Schumer’s proteges; he was Schumer’s chief counsel in examining the firing of federal attorneys by the Bush Admin.

The speculation wasn’t that he’d go after Schumer’s seat, but that he might be nominated as next AG.

Another distinct possibility is running for NYS Governor (2 of last 3 governors of NY have been AG - Spitzer and Cuomo).

But I lean towards him going into private practice or is considered for a federal court justice slot.

That’s Schumer’s seat until such time as he wants to retire on his own terms.

The previous generation of RFRA laws were intended to prevent government overreach into places where government ought to be deferential, the current crop of state laws being called RFRA are intended to allow people who don’t like non-heterosexuals to refuse to serve them.

As the UK election draws closer, Labour accuses the SNP of taking votes away from them and making a Tory victory more likely - however it’s looking very likely that despite their protests, Labour will be manually installed into Downing St by none other than the SNP, whether they like it or not. Which is kinda hilarious.

Everyone in Westminster politics seems to be outraged at the temerity of the Scots. They seem to forget it was them who insisted that we were all “Better Together”.

Here a Guardian writer attempts to grapple with the issues. Might have been nice though if someone had whispered in his ear that the SNP is now led by a woman called Nicola Sturgeon, and has been for the last several months.

Kory is going to have to get out more. Seems not enough people know who he is, and Kory can’t stand that.

Keep digging that hole, Chuck:

The Council of Ephors was a Spartan institution. Not surprising that the senior staff group of Allan West would have such a name.

He looks like such a tool even without the AK. Reallly what a little coward? You don’t need a fucking gun to go out grocery shopping Kory. He’s an insecure wussy.

Yet, not seeing anything directly identifying as such as part of West’s campaign.

But did find pix of West getting a molon labe tattoo.

There’s one reference by West to the council, in recounting the story of Thermopylae. Problem is that he doesn’t exactly see the council in the best of terms - because it was Leonidas pleading with them to send troops to defend Sparta from the Persians, but that fell on deaf ears.

Would it surprise anyone that Jim Hoft is at epicenter of Germanwings crash conspiracy that the copilot was a secret Muslim? Yup. There he is. And his idiocy is picked up by Andrew McCarthy and others and repeated ad nauseum. Even though it’s so thinly sourced that it’s transparent.

[edited] And as I hit post, guess Charles saw something similar, since he just posted downstairs!

Pretty sure he is the complete douche canoe that you see wearing the fedora in all of the Tarrant County Open Carry events.

Is that a fedora or a porkpie?

I always thought fedoras had much wider brims than what Mr. Penis Extension always wears.

“Fine you want to wear a fedora. First, you must have an interview with the Hat board and demonstrate that you’re not a douchebag.”

Watkin’s hat is not a fedora! *fashion police*

Not a porkpie. Porkpie is what Walter White (Heisenberg) wears.
