Indiana Anti-Gay Activist Opposes Mike Pence’s Plan to “Clarify” the RFRA

The anti-gay base keeps giving away the game

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has been all over the media yesterday and today, pretending the “Religious Freedom Restoration Act” has nothing to do with discriminating against LGBT people, and today he announced that he’d push for a “clarification” of the bill, to show that it doesn’t do that thing everybody knows it does.

Pence has a problem, though; the anti-gay activists who helped ram this bill through the Indiana legislature are opposed to any such clarification, because of course they are.

Micah Clark of the American Family Association’s Indiana chapter, who stood right behind Pence, along with several other Religious Right leaders, when he signed the bill into law and has quite a record of anti-gay activism, said today that he opposes any such clarification.

He told AFA President Tim Wildmon today that conservatives should call Pence and other state officials and demand that they oppose any effort to clarify that the law does not legalize discrimination: “That could totally destroy this bill.” (In Georgia, supporters of a similar bill also opposed a push to ensure that the legislation will not permit discrimination in business.)

Wildmon agreed, adding that the Indiana law is necessary to protect anti-gay business owners from “persecution.” The law’s critics, Wildmon claimed, are waging “spiritual warfare” against state officials.

Here’s a photo originally posted proudly by Micah Clark, showing Clark and several other anti-gay activists standing with Pence when he signed the RFRA, with annotations added by GLAAD to make it very clear that Pence is simply lying about its intent.

This has to be extremely frustrating for Mayor Ballard since Indianapolis has local nondiscrimination laws that specifically protect gays and lesbians in employment, housing, education and public accommodation, which include business transactions.

re: #17 Nyet

He will come to earth to kick ass and chew gum, and he will be all out of gum.

To wit:

11I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. 12His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”a He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:

KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

And this:

14I looked, and there before me was a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was one like a son of manb with a crown of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. 15Then another angel came out of the temple and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, “Take your sickle and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.” 16So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.

17Another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. 18Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, “Take your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine, because its grapes are ripe.” 19The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God’s wrath. 20They were trampled in the winepress outside the city, and blood flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses’ bridles for a distance of 1,600 stadia.c

That would make a great horror movie.

Yeah, claiming your power descends from an invisible being who only talks to you is pretty much the basis of most of the really awful despotic regimes in history. The real Founding Fathers knew this - not the fake ones constructed by the RWNJs for the sole purpose of nodding their animatronic heads along to the beat of the same old ignorant shit.

Always interesting to watch the facial expressions when you start comparing the various versions of the Bible to the whackos, asking them to please tell which one is the “real” word of God, and which just a construct of imperfect human understanding… their world starts to fray around the edges and they don’t like it. Not one bit.

The development of the canon was not quite arbitrary, only authoritative books were included, and the Apocalypse of St. John was the only one such among this genre. But even that didn’t save it from controversy, since some churches didn’t want to accept it at first.

OK, not absolutely accurate, there also was the Apocalypse of Peter, which is mentioned in the Muratorian canon, which means it did have a measure of authority, but it is mentioned with a remark that many people don’t want it read in the churches, so it was still less authoritative than John.

Some religious leaders have realized that people are disinclined to buy their attempts to impose religious beliefs on secular matters. Those religious leaders may even have realized that the country isn’t going to become a theocracy so they’re trying to use laws like Indiana’s RFRA as a force multiplier.

So it appears the tenants here might be forming an ad hoc committee to fight the ebil mgmt co that just keeps taking our rent and won’t fix anything (plus shows up unannounced at 8 am wanting in without notice.

We got a visit from one of them this morning along with the pest control guy (who won’t come in w/o a mgr) and tried to invoke “rules” that weren’t included in our leases, plus took photos on his cell phone when he went into an 18 yr old guy’s room while he was still sleeping after the guy’s mother asked him not to. He took photos in other of her rooms also, but I didn’t notice him taking any in mine (but I was also trying to keep the Munchkin out of the way).

I really don’t mind the pest control guy, who I call by his first name since he’s been doing this over here for years usually after 12, but I don’t know this other idiot from Adam’s house cat. And this guy thinks they can impose rules on us in our own abodes when we’re already under a lease that doesn’t contain those rules? That shit isn’t flying with any of the tenants, and this guy doesn’t know it, but if he goes in any apt when someone is sleeping, he could end up on the wrong side of a gun (several tenants own them).

When I studied German, I had a heck of a time with the grammar. There are 6 words for “the”, 5 for “a” and everthing gets an ending. Then on top of that, word order gets changed around. If I were to say in English: “I would have gone home first, but I stopped to get gas” it would be something like: I would home first gone have, but I had gas to get stopped.

Your count is a bit off. We’re talking 3 genders x 4 cases, that is, 12 forms of “a” and 16 forms of “the” (because of the plural “the”). That is, if we’re talking about pure articles, because there are also article-like words like “kein”.
But there is a system to that madness. One gets used to it after a while.

What is a particle?

Definition

A particle is a word that

It still takes the form of a phrasal verb. BTW there are lots of parallels in German. E.g. “eat up” - aufessen (ich esse etwas auf), where “auf” in general corresponds to the sense of “up” (e.g. aufwärts = upwards). Aufbrauchen - use up. Aufkommen - come up (this idea came up …, die Idee ist aufgekommen). Of course in German these are “full verbs”.

Text of the editorial is here:

Editorial: Gov. Pence, fix ‘religious freedom’ law now

We are at a critical moment in Indiana’s history.

And much is at stake.

Our image. Our reputation as a state that embraces people of diverse backgrounds and makes them feel welcome. And our efforts over many years to retool our economy, to attract talented workers and thriving businesses, and to improve the quality of life for millions of Hoosiers.

All of this is at risk because of a new law, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, that no matter its original intent already has done enormous harm to our state and potentially our economic future.

The consequences will only get worse if our state leaders delay in fixing the deep mess created.

Half steps will not be enough. Half steps will not undo the damage.

Only bold action — action that sends an unmistakable message to the world that our state will not tolerate discrimination against any of its citizens — will be enough to reverse the damage.

Don’t bring up split infinitives, because you know that proves evolution (of language).

One of my biggest complaints about language education in China (and I have many) is the slavish focus on “book grammar.” Students from junior middle school onward do countless exercises on which English form is correct. In the early years, it’s not bad, but as they approach the college entrance exam, they have to know what is an attributive clause, an adverbial clause, and on and on. The exam questions are all multiple choice, and half the time, there are two or more correct answers, given current English usage. So, I’m often on the spot when it comes to explaining why the book answer is better than all the others. Half the time, I don’t know, because I never had an English grammar class.

Chinese students are so paranoid about their grammar that many don’t want to open their mouths to speak, for fear of making a mistake. And listening to conversational English confounds them, because we native speakers don’t always follow them grammar rulz.

On the other hand, the really top students have better English than most native speakers in America … Sarah Palin, for example.

Question: How is asking a baker to bake a cake or a pharmacist to fill a prescription threatening their religious liberty?

They need to be able to impose their principles on the surrounding populace.
Otherwise they don’t truly feel free.

They really are down to depending on the 27% now. Problem is, they can get all of the 27% out to vote, and in an election with 50% turnout, that adds up to 54%, and here we are.

2016 is an open presidential year, so I’m hoping we can get a big enough turnout to win, but how long can we depend on this to save us from disaster?

Because in their opinion they would be helping those pour souls into eternal damnation.

Did you read the link I posted a few days ago, where some peasant asked Mullah Mohler if it was ok for a Christian to be hired as a laborer in building a Buddhist temple?

Apparently the layman felt it was wrong but was in search of guidance.

Sure enough, Mullah Mohler counseled his little lamb that indeed yes, it was wrong for a Christian to help build a Buddhist temple.

So this is the direction in which they are heading, in case you want to know where this whole affair is headed.

Isn’t it a requirement to spread the faith among these faithheads? The more fundamentalist the faith, the more boldly and loudly they proselytize.

I just realized something. There’s an awful number of people in power that are fundamentalists.

I never started with Twitter because it seemed ripe to turn out like the comments on YouTube.

Youtube commentary is calm, rational & mellow compared to twitter. Twitter is not worth any trying to save.

You’re a Christian. You run a lumber store. Some Buddhist monk comes to you and wants to buy ten thousand board feet to build his temple?

Should said good Christian be forced to sell his lumber, to enable the Buddhist to go to hell?

Well?

Incoherence.

Pointless incoherence at that. Rubio’s chances are even more DOA than Jindal’s.

Well, this particular Buddhist monk is a Muslim, and I don’t think the Buddhist Muslims allow gay, do they?

It all really depends on your understanding of what evangelism really is. I’ve argued (see here littlegreenfootballs.com) that providing an example to follow is what was intended rather than the more common bible bashing that happens instead of evangelism all too often.

Last time it was month after month of new darlings in the “anyone but Romney” sweepstakes, each one quickly abandoned. Is this going to be a similar “anyone but Bush” hoedown, or did Rancid Prius curtailing the debate season put a spike in that? Any thoughts?

The RNC appear to be in quiet mode. I suspect they spend their time in back-rooms with millionaires and billionaires trying to figure out how skin the Christo-cat.

How are businesses that will express their “religious freedom” in Indiana going to determine who’s gay? Are they going to ask everybody that steps in?

If the Orwellian nature of how these assholes are using the words “religious freedom” hasn’t sunk in why are you reading this blog?!?

The perversion of the language is so goddamn striking. These people are desperate. Their minds are so clouded with hate that their actions are making second class citizens of thousands of Hoosiers. It’s pretty mind-boggling.

I think they’re terrified. They see the train of change bearing down on them at frightening speed and they’re doing everything they can think of to try to stop it, to no avail, I think (hope)—the majority of Americans seem to have made up their minds and are moving forward, barking dogs be damned.

Good one!

It’s after midnight here, so I think it’s time for me to head on out too.

G’nite, lizards.

Charles, every time I move back to the LGF tab, LGF does a full refresh. It gets quite frustrating on a tablet because the site bounces around as everything loads.

343 CuriousLurker  Mar 30, 2015 9:58:24pm

I’m pretty sure it’s a tablet issue, not an LGF issue—my iPad Mini does the same thing. I don’t even have to switch tabs, sometimes it just does it when I tilt it a certain way. It does it whether I’m using Chrome or Safari and I’ve never been able to figure out how to make it stop, which is why I almost never use it here.

Okay, now I’m really leaving.

Later, lizards.

With my Android devices, clicking “New Comments” refreshes the entire page, as does tabbing. I suspect the pages are swapped into/out of RAM as needed.
