Religious freedom means that bakers are free to express their disapproval of the homosexual lifestyle even as they are filling a gay couple’s orders.

They can quote them all the relevant passages about exactly what the Bible calls for us to do to homosexuals while flourishing a bag of frosting in their direction and reminding them where they are going to end up…perhaps more sooner than later.

As my grandmother used to say, “You can gild a turd, but you can’t make it smell no better.”

Gov. Pence and his band of legislators are working overtime to enhance this turd with a thin chocolate coating. And, because they have so many nuts on hand already…

The smart move would have been not to write the bill in the first place.
The next smartest move would have been not to vote on it(and pass it).
The next smartest move would have been a veto.
Re-clarifying the bill with further legislation that has the added risk factor of teabaggers slipping even more vile language into it falls somewhere below this line.

Fucking brilliant:

“This whole anti-gay bill they were producing here was just a horrid little thing that everybody was watching real closely, and it became evident that this state thinks more about religion than it does about government or equal rights or anything else,” said Bill Levin, founder of the First Church of Cannabis, during a recent interview with HIGH TIMES. “I filed the papers with the Secretary of State on Thursday, as soon as Mikey signed off on that damn bill, and it came back the next morning that it was accepted.”

This means the state of Indiana, which has blatantly refused to even hear legislation to legalize marijuana, has officially recognized the First Church of Cannabis as a legitimate ministry and acknowledges the religion, which Levin calls “Cannabiterian,” as an accepted faith. The church now has just as much freedom to operate as any other denomination in the state.

Well, it’s either that or watch the state’s economy head into the shitter at breakneck speed as businesses, then students and teachers, and finally middle class residents flee the state in droves. Indiana will make Detroit look like an economic Mecca by comparison.

Talk about a change in perception:

Matt Yglesias about Mike Pence in 2008:

I can tell you this about Mike Pence: he has no idea what he’s talking about. The man is a fool, who deserves to be laughed at…

He didn’t know anything at all, in short, about investing, financial markets, or, seemingly, the basic terms of public policy. And yet there he was speaking on the topic at Heritage. He’s a total fraud…

the Pence far-right crisis “plan” which, as you’ll see, is also utterly fraudulent.

thinkprogress.org

Yglesias in 2014—7 Reason Mike Pence will be the GOP nominee in 2016

Pence was a solid supply-sider as a member of Congress, and took Reaganesque fiscal thinking to new heights in his draft proposal for Social Security privatization…this kind of thing is the time-tested way to sell conservative economic policy and freed from the constraints of Obama-era debates about Keynes, Pence is the ideal person to bring it back.

It’s middle of the night in USA, finally here in Prague!

First the bad news:

Our flight was delayed twice, the first flight was cancelled and then the second flight they couldn’t find a crew! We were stuck in Amsterdam for 7 hours.

We finally made it to Prague at 8:30 PM but then spend another 2 hours at the baggage claim because they lost Zedushka’s garment bag! Which was kind of inevitable when you think about the number of aircraft and flight delays that were involved. So we are waiting for KLM to deliver it to the apartment in Prague where we are staying for the next 2 days.

On top of that it’s cold & raining, not the best kind of weather to stroll around and explore. :(

Now the good news,

this apartment is a palace! 2 bedrooms, completely furnished, fully equipped kitchen (not that we are planning on having a dinner party) right in the middle of Josefov. One of the views from the apartment window is the Old Cemetery (inorite)

I just looked outside. The rain has stopped, they are setting up the souvenir stalls on the Maiselova.

Nice; glad you made it without too much hassle. Yeah, the weather here in the Czech Republic is supposed to be rainy and windy for the next week or so, unfortunately. Still, there’s plenty to see in Prague. A word of caution - don’t take a taxi in Prague, because they’ll rip you off blind. Prague taxi drivers are notorious for charging foreign tourists double or triple the normal rates. There’s now a special police squad dedicated to catching these hucksters.

That being said, enjoy!

LOL thanks for the tip! Everything we want to see is walking distance, and the person we are renting the apartment from sent a driver to pick us up at the airport, and will return us to the airport tomorrow night for the flight to Tel Aviv.

The Republican strategist behind the smear campaign of MO state auditor Tom Schweick, found dead of suicide last month, is still flourishing by moving from MO to TX as the chief political strategist for Ted Cruz. And Sunday the media director for Schweick was also found a suicide. And Missouri Republican Party Chairman John Hancock, who evidently started the whisper campaign, refuses to step down.

Rachel Maddow had a great story on it last night: msnbc.com

The Republican Party has become so unethical, so corrupt and venal, it’s a wonder it can run any campaign these days, but that appears where they’re most successful, first against Democrats and now within their own party.

Mostly they’re doing so by spreading fear, lies, and insinuations, but they also have power and money. What are they really doing to this country? That’s what I fear most—and some people are merely lapping it up without paying any attention to what they’re being fed.

This, and laws like the “religious freedom” law in Indiana should be waking up more people than those already against it. There’s a lot of work ahead. Is the country really prepared for this kind of fight? Can we isolate that kind of thinking and change it?

Yes, well, I imagine that the forebears of most of us during that period probably lived in one room huts w/dirt floors w/a fire in the middle of the room, were under the control of the “lord” and had little to call their own, most of it going whoever ruled over them w/a bit left to eat. Unless you were born into a certain class, there was very little way to improve your lot unless you were able to curry favor in some fashion.

74 BlackPearl  Mar 31, 2015 3:33:52am

The gothic cathedrals here in northern Germany are neat because they’re made of red brick instead of the huge white stones typical to Paris:

Since a lot of the cities here were part of the Hanseatic League, a non-feudal trading consortium, the cathedrals weren’t as much built on the backs of the poor as in a feudal society. …though I imagine a solid social safety net would have been a better use of the money as always. :)

75 BlackPearl  Mar 31, 2015 3:38:08am

And actually the Heiligen-Geist Hospital in the same city was built as a hospital for the poor and a home for the elderly in the 13th century, and it’s also a beautiful Gothic building:

You could also look at the multi-generational construction projects as a way of redistributing wealth and work. The people designing and executing those buildings were the emerging urban middle class.

But it was merchant Bertram Morneweg and other merchants who built it, based no doubt on their own interests in selling their wares and developing a more extensive consumer class. That was, I suppose, an enlightened attitude for the period. Plus, we don’t know what those people had to give up in any money or property of any sort in order to enter.

“The residents of the hospital were subjected to a monastery-like rule, but they were given food and since the 17th century, eight times a year a warm bath.” Who knows if they got any baths before then? : /

Most anyone who knows anything about ecclesiastical buildings knows of the Sangrada Familia. My father told me about it when I was a teenager and for some reason it stuck with me. A mix of Art Nouveau and Gothic. It’s my favorite Catholic building because it reminds me of a sandcastle. One could build turrets and spires by dripping water-saturated sand through the fingers. Quite pretty and as yet incomplete.

Census-gate continues…

Johnson this week will ask President Obama to remove Zinser from office because of a pattern of alleged misconduct, including retaliation against whistle-blowers and the hiring of someone suspected of being his girlfriend.

Zinser is the current inspector general of the US Commerce Department

re: #94 Doofus

Don’t know much, if anything, about ‘Censusgate’, but the mention of American ‘frugality’ persisting in spite of a better jobs market may simply reflect an attitude which will persist after a major financial sector collapse. I’m no economist but if wages don’t match growth (and things are getting better) people won’t spend as much. Similar climate here.
Why spend more on wages and create more disposable income when you can always cut costs? Disease of austerity at work.

This article may show an important factor; older workers generally will be more frugal and most already have the kinds of consumer goods younger workers are working toward, such as a house, car, furniture, appliances, etc. and can put off those purchases in light of their new circumstances. They will also attempt to save more money or assets they own.

Losing a job is always terrible. For workers over 50, it’s worse.

New data from AARP shows that older workers stay unemployed longer, and their new jobs pay less.

One of the reasons I’m eager to read President Obama’s presidential biography is to see how he dealt with the GFC. One good book I read (it was a gift that worked out) was Jonathan Alter’s The Promise.
Might read it again. Dealt with Obama’s first full year in office. The Republicans back in 2008 were more amenable. If that can even be imagined. Shit has changed so much.
As an outsider, I cannot express how much respect I have for Arlen Spector. Those town hall meetings he stuck through after switching. Goddamn…

Bank closes Brooksville pawn, gun shop owner’s account

Of course the story, originally linked from FB, tried to spin the story as some nefarious anti-gun move. But once you read 3/4 of the way down you see real reason:

“SunTrust is pro-small business, and we are proud to serve more than 400,000 small business clients. SunTrust fully supports all of the rights that Americans are granted under the Constitution, and we continue to maintain banking relationships with licensed firearms dealers. It is consistent with long-standing industry practice to review relationships to ensure they satisfy a range of business and risk considerations. We have decided to discontinue banking relationships with three types of businesses - specifically payday lenders, pawn shops and dedicated check-cashers - due to compliance requirements. We remain committed to serving the needs of our communities while meeting the standards of our industry.”

I applaud Suntrust for cutting ties with such vultures.

And now what do we have? Our state comes off looking like a gaggle of willfully ignorant morons, an impression that is not entirely false, all thanks to you and your fervent belief that representative democracy is someone else’s job. Great job! Now, go fuck yourself.

It’s good they aren’t dealing with vultures, but Suntrust needs to better train its customer service people. The “gun letters” remark was the remark of an employee who had not been properly instructed as to what the situation was and how to respond to customer inquiries. And those remarks may yet cost Suntrust business because they’ll be bounced around the net as “proof of what Suntrust is really up to!”

130 Mattand  Mar 31, 2015 6:07:08am

Quick question about a recent comment on Mike Pence and Indiana bringing back Separate and Unequal.

I forget which Lizard brought this up, but it was a really great explanation of what a protected class of people is in the US. IIRC, a class deals with things like race, religion and sexuality. In the US, it is illegal to discriminate based on class.

For example, you cannot refuse someone service if they are gay, anymore than you can discriminate against someone who is straight (yes, I know that never happens). This includes using the “logic” of religion: “I can’t make those two gays a wedding cake, because the Bible says baby Jesus will set my dog on my fire if I do.”

Same goes with things like race. It’s just as illegal to discriminate against white people as it is blacks because race is a class; not just a specific skin color.

The difference between this IN law and the other 20 (including the Fed one here) is that the IN law makes no such provision for class. The other laws (which should never have been passed in the first place) prohibit things like Homophobic Wedding Service Vendor Syndrome.

The IN law is basically a giant loophole that allows out-and-out discrimination of technically anyone; but most likely the LGBT crowd, with the ability to hide behind your favorite book of Holy Fables.

Am I getting that right?

But that customer service rep brought the story back and gave it additional spark with his/her wrong words. Suntrust made the business decision last fall, and there was some YERPing about it then, which Suntrust worked to disprove. Now this one idiot has ruined much of the effort of many other people. And yes, the main intellectual fault is on the confirmation bias of many gun owners, but most people have confirmation biases and PR and customer service operations take this into account.

That bit Maddow did on the piece of GOP human waste, Hancock, was very thorough. The fact that he is now associated with Ted Cruz’s campaign says a lot about Cruz.

Ted Cruz is signaling he will do whatever it will take to get elected. He will prove to be one the slimiest candidates for president we may ever see.

It’s sad we don’t have proper journalists to bust him down to size. He’ll be on all kinds of media and people will hold their nose, interview him like he is legit, let him spew his less than truthful BS and we will all be the worse for it.

And who knows what kind of sleaze Hancock and other grease balls like him will be doing down in the mud hole and out of sight.

Editor’s note: Nigerian opposition party, All Progressives Congress, has declared victory in the country’s closely-watched presidential election. Official vote tallies haven’t yet been released, but the party’s candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, has been leading in exit polls. Nigeria’s electoral commission has been concerned about allegations about voting irregularities. We’ll keep watch for official results and statements from President Goodluck Jonathan. - Rebecca

Because the religious right has established the scope of the discussion. Their default assumption is everyone has (or needs to have) a religious belief, and the concept that some don’t never seems to enter their minds. They make such a big stink about every single law that might possibly “infringe” on their beliefs that lawmakers now have to tiptoe around religion (esp. Christianity) like someone walking around lava flows near a volcano.

In other words, they act as if America has an established State religion when in fact it doesn’t.

The issue is equal accommodation under the law. People’s individual little idiosyncratic observances are irrelevant.

Let’s say I own a kosher pie bakery. That means I sell kosher pies to anyone who wants to buy one, whether they are Jews, Muslims, Christians, gay, straight, vegetarians, Pastafarians or Methodists.

If someone wants a bacon pie I will politely direct them to the bacon pie store down the block.

I had some RWNJ dipshit ask me yesterday if I’d be fine with someone demanding that a Jewish baker make a cake for them on the Sabbath. I had to point out that if that baker is observant enough to keep the Sabbath, all of their customers would know, since the bakery would always close early on Friday and be closed all day Saturday. There’d be no way to demand anything from that baker on the Sabbath since they wouldn’t be working in the first place.

It’s maddening. They don’t understand anything beyond the talking points they swallow wholesale.

That they’re trying to drag other creeds and races into this whole mess is a pretty big tell that they know there’s no way to sell this other than naked bigotry. There’s no national cases about Jewish delis being forced to serve bacon, or black bakers being forced to make orders for the KKK, or any other such nonsense. This entire law sprung from evangelist anger over gay marriage and it has always been about allowing them to practice their bigotry publicly without consequence.

Until merchants and service providers woke up and recognized that the money of minorities was green like white people’s, racism continued in accommodation. But it took Federal legislation to take that kind of segregation apart first because left to the States, we would still be waiting. If the argument is that this law is no different than that signed by the President and other states, then Pence needs to follow their example by agreeing to sign a law that prohibits discrimination against the LGBT population of Indiana. But since that would defeat the purpose of this law in the eyes of its sponsors, namely to legalize discrimination against that same population, it’ll never happen.

It was ostensibly refusing to bestow a blessing on something they find sinful.

But Religious Freedom means that they are free to express their disapproval of gay marriage, and they may feel free to do so directly to the customer while taking the order for Bruce and Roger’s three-tier velvet sheet cake, all whilst filling them in on relevant scriptural passages about what we are supposed to do with men who lie with other men as women, and then remind them that there is still time to repent and save their souls from eternal damnation, which may come more sooner than later…

It’s simple to me. If you’re going to operate a secular service in the public sphere, then you should be providing your service to anyone free of discrimination. This. Remember, it has been a Republican mayor of Indianapolis who has publicly gone after this bill and made clear those who refuse gay people won’t do business with his city, and it was a Republican state legislator in Georgia who tacked on an anti-discrimination amendment onto that state’s otherwise identical ‘RFRA’ bill, which resulted in the bill being tabled.

So it turns out that the mythical “EMP MISSILE” various nutbars are always worrying about is actually in development. Thing is, we’re the one’s developing it:

The U.S. Air Force Has a Computer-Killing Cruise Missile

But the CHAMP still isn’t ready for battle

The British have had a non-nuclear 155 round that produces local effect for a couple decades.

As many of you know, I have a wingnut sister whom I’ve mentioned here a few times. I got a phone call from her this morning. Her church choir needs a web site, and she recommended me to the powers that be.

In the course of the conversation, I learned that the choir is being bankrolled by the wife of one James Dobson. Yeah, him.

My dilemma is this - should I beg off due to irreconcilable difference of opinion, or take his dirty wingnut money? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Even if I don’t put that on the site (provided I do it), I’m tempted to start a band and call it that. :)

I’m sort of leaning toward just providing my sister with a list of recommendations on hosting and platform and telling them to find someone local.

It would fulfill my familial obligations (wingnut or not, she’s my sister and I love her) while providing an out for having to actually do work for that fucker (Dobson, not my sister).

Besides, I’m pretty sure that if they went looking around and saw that I do web sites for heathen rock bands (not to mention my Facebook page), they’d surely fire me on the spot anyway.

I’d suggest taking the gig in the business-is-business vein. Not unlike the just bake the damn cake argument.

That said, I’ve shared this here in the past WRT my brother the audio-video engineer. He did sound and video for a number of churches and got burned Every. Single. Time. They all seemed to work from the same playbook, i.e. agree to equipment, labor, price, etc. and then make increasing demands and upgrades while refusing to pay for them, pointing to the contract. For instance, they would insist on stuff that he recommended against and then when they weren’t happy with it - as he’d clearly told them upfront - they’d demand an upgrade at the same cost.

After a few such experiences, he refused to even bid on any church or religious related jobs or he’s bid WAY high to assure he’d never be considered. Just wasn’t worth the hassle.

It’s a simple enough matter, wingnuts, if the Muslim business does not sell pork now, it will not be forced to in the future. But if the bakery sells wedding cakes to straight couples, then it must also sell them to gay couples.

Dems must use any opportunity to emphasize: if a Rethug comes to power, it means war, war, war.

Repubs are doing a great job of that. There’s no doubt that Repubs are itching for a war with Iran, which would lead to the deaths of thousands of American soldiers. But who cares, right? As long as Cheney and his ilk make $$ through war profiteering, that’s all that really matters.

re: #346 Dark_Falcon

So not all nor most Republicans are ‘thugs’ in any way. Using the insult ‘rethuglicans’ shuts down conversation and hardens the positions against the speaker of people who otherwise might listen to him/her.

While I applaud the GA state rep and the IN mayor for the actions, let’s also keep in mind that they are just about the only two GOP members to publicly call this Jim Crow law for what it is.

I’d also be curious to see what these two gentlemen’s past record on gay rights is. The cynic in me says they’re driven mostly by business concerns, rather than giving a shit that people are being discriminated against.

I wouldn’t exactly break my arm patting myself on the back if I were Republican because of these two. Treating gays as second-class citizen is still a major GOP campaign plank.

And as other people have pointed, six Republicans, one declared and five “most likely”, who want to run the entire fucking country gave an official response of “Atta boy, Mike Pence!”

You guys have a looooooong way to go when it comes to treating some of your fellow Americans as human equals.

To begin, I love you guys. This thread has given me much-needed laughs this morning.

Second - I’m on the horns of a dilemma here, need some sage Lizard advice.

Personally, I wouldn’t do it, based on the Dobson connection.

I like how they try to claim Christian persecution when a lot of Christians are condemning this. And frankly they’re one to talk about absurd caricatures when they paint gays as demonic. If you are in a secular line of work and baking cakes, arranging flowers, and photographing weddings, you don’t get to claim that your religious beliefs prohibit you from doing something that you would do for others. Or maybe it’s time to admit you’re a shitty businessperson if your service is only open to certain kinds of people.

I couldn’t get through to set him straight by letting him know that we don’t necessarily prefer those calibers and guns, much as we might like to show solidarity with our defunct Soviet comrades, it’s just that those are the ones they make in places like North Korea and Iran and that Obama and Holder can therefore provide for free through the secret ACORN/Muslim Brotherhood armaments network.

He’s saying that the people pushing for gay marriage want to be thought of in the same vein as Whitney Young and Martin Luther King Jr., sainted if you will, without having endured what those men endured.

He is utterly wrong in this contention. I’ve never known gay marriage campaigners who think they rate that high. They know the risks they run are far less than those run by men like Dr. King. They often thank those men for making it safer for those who are campaigning now, but they do not think themselves on the same level.

And that’s my wingnut rebuttal for the day.
