Indianapolis Star Front Page Editorial: “FIX THIS NOW”

Politics • Views: 34,258
Indianapolis Star’s front page editorial today on the controversial “Religious Freedom” law

We are at a critical moment in Indiana’s history.

And much is at stake.

Our image. Our reputation as a state that embraces people of diverse backgrounds and makes them feel welcome. And our efforts over many years to retool our economy, to attract talented workers and thriving businesses, and to improve the quality of life for millions of Hoosiers.

All of this is at risk because of a new law, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, that no matter its original intent already has done enormous harm to our state and potentially our economic future.

The consequences will only get worse if our state leaders delay in fixing the deep mess created.

Half steps will not be enough. Half steps will not undo the damage.

Only bold action — action that sends an unmistakable message to the world that our state will not tolerate discrimination against any of its citizens — will be enough to reverse the damage.

Gov. Mike Pence and the General Assembly need to enact a state law to prohibit discrimination in employment, housing, education and public accommodations on the basis of a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

Those protections and RFRA can co-exist. They do elsewhere.

This is what happens when the Republican governor and legislature of a red state pander to the religious nutcases the same week as the NCAA Final Four.

That is something I was wondering earlier, did Pence get bad advice on this or did he ignore good advice? Did his legal advisers tell him what the consequences of this law could be? Did his PR adviser tell him that signing this now, in the middle of the NCAA basketball tournament, wasn’t the wisest idea? Or did they bullshit him about how this would be seen as a great step forward for protecting “religious freedom”?

Now they’re crying Foul that anyone would have the temerity to complain about their crappy bill.

Jim Wright on Facebook:

“Was I expecting this kind of backlash? Heavens no.”

That was a very surprised and hurt Indiana Governor Mike Pence. He wasn’t expecting “this kind of backlash.” This kind.

See, he and his pinch-faced right-wing conservative Evangelical supporters WERE expecting a backlash. Just not THIS kind.

What they were expecting was protests from a few gays and a handful of long haired liberals whining about civil rights and equality - and they just didn’t care. Screw ‘em. Those people don’t matter and can be ignored so far as Mike Pence is concerned. He doesn’t represent them. He doesn’t care about them. He doesn’t respect them. They’re second class citizens and they should be grateful they aren’t being stoned to death in the church parking lot. And in this Pence and his friends are no different than any other nasty small minded religious bigot. For them, their religion isn’t a refuge or a comfort, it’s a spiked club that they use to beat others into submission.

Pence pledged to “fix” Indiana’s utterly unnecessary and completely idiotic Religious Freedom Restoration Law. But, Pence insisted again this morning, the problem isn’t the law itself but how it’s being perceived. He says a “fix” is needed only because “frankly, the smear that’s been leveled against this law.” Republicans are hurt and upset at how unfair it all is. They didn’t give a goddamn about the pushback from gay people or liberals, but when businesses such as Walmart, Saleforce, Apple, and the NCAA threatened to pull out, well, THAT got their attention.

It amuses me that once again, the same people who do nothing but harp endlessly over Ayn Randian free market solutions are upset when that very same free market threatens to take its money elsewhere.

So now Pence is announcing a “fix.”

HOWEVER:

- Pence said he opposes adding sexual orientation to the list of Indiana’s protected categories under the state anti-discrimination law.

- Pence says the “fix” WILL NOT involve statewide anti-discrimination protections for LGBT people.

That’s right, the law de facto gives businesses the right to discriminate against gay people BUT NOT ANYBODY ELSE specifically because EVERYBODY ELSE IS PROTECTED UNDER INDIANA’S ANTI DISCRIMINATION LAW. And Pence says he wants the law fixed, but does not support adding protections for gay people.

Think of it like how black people in 1960’s Alabama had equal rights … so long as they sat in the back of the bus and kept their mouths shut.

A year ago, Pence led Republican efforts in a bitter constitutional fight to ban same-sex marriage in Indiana.

So, forgive my skeptical face when Mike Pence says that he never intended this law to allow discrimination against gay people.

Pence is just the second coming of Bull Connor and George Wallace.

“Was I expecting this kind of backlash? Heavens no.”

Heaven no, Mike Pence didn’t see it coming. The people on the wrong side of history never do.

I wish this guy would run for president.

That seems the most likely conclusion, that they expected a couple minor demonstrations, perhaps some bad things said in the national press, and then it would be over and done with. The LGBT crowd would realize they were powerless and move on, while Pence and the GOP’s base would be protected when SCOTUS inevitably stricks down all gay marriage bans.

Because you said ‘Benghazi’, I’d normally post some news out of Libya, but today I’ve got nothing from there, so here’s some good news from Iraq instead:

Iraqi forces recapture government headquarters in Tikrit from Isis

Iraqi forces have retaken the provincial government headquarters in Tikrit from Islamic State (Isis), a significant advance in the battle to recapture the city.

“Iraqi forces cleared the government complex in Tikrit,” an army major general said on Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The government buildings have been under our control since last night (Monday).”

It is the most significant advance in Tikrit since pro-government forces launched an operation to retake the city on 2 March, their largest since Isis led an offensive that overran much of the country’s Sunni Arab heartland last June. It leaves Isis in control of the north and east of the city.

Cummins and other companies testified against RFRA legislation at public hearings. Other firms weighed in with letters or by button-holing legislators from their home districts.

It didn’t seem to help the anti-RFRA cause even when two companies with influential Republicans at their helm came out against RFRA. They were Angie’s List, whose CEO Oesterle managed Republican Mitch Daniels’ 2004 gubernatorial campaign, and Kittle’s Furniture, whose chairman, Jim Kittle Jr., was chairman of the Indiana Republican Party from 2002 to 2006…

More

The Cummins mentioned above is Cummins diesel. Pence and the Indiana lege received plenty of good advice, they just chose to ignore it.

Anti-Israel spew-fest at the University of Southampton gets canceled:

A conference at the University of Southampton discussing the right of Israel to exist has been cancelled, say the organisers, who have accused the institution of bowing to pressure at the expense of free speech.

The conference, due to take place next month, described itself as “unique because it concerns the legitimacy in international law of the Jewish state of Israel”, but critics denounced it as one-sided.

Among those who condemned the conference were the Jewish Board of Deputies, and MPs including Eric Pickles, the communities secretary, and Caroline Noakes, MP for Romsey and Southampton.

SNIP

Others due to appear at the conference included Richard Falk, the Jewish American academic and former UN special rapporteur who once compared Israel’s treatment of Palestinians to the Nazis’ treatment of Jews.

Noakes expressed concern about the presence of Falk and said the university could “bring itself into disrepute by hosting such an apparently one-sided event”. Pickles said there should be a platform for all sides, warning that “the far-left’s bashing of Israel … often descends into naked antisemitism”.

Haters gonna hate, but there’s no reason for a university to give them a platform.

I get the feeling that Gov. Pence (even though, after all this, he really really doesn’t come across as too bright) knew damn well what the IN RFRA bill meant, and was meant to do, and who he was enacting it for - just look at that pic he publicized of the (closed) signing ceremonies: three Republicans, a rabbi, and the Spanish Inquisition. I guess the CW is right in this case: he didn’t expect any major blowback; except, of course, from Big Gay and its weenie-librul apologists, who could be safely ignored. Now, ol’ Mike is front-and-center having to defend a crap law against a national firestorm; and (being not-too-bright) can’t do much more than whine about “mischaracterizations” , how he himself isn’t prejudiced (like, who cares?) and everyone is being so mean to poor little Indiana….

As to the point of remembering how various martyrs were done in, the reason would be not to celebrate pain and suffering, but to celebrate the tenacity of the saints, in that they didn’t renounce their faith so as to avoid such a fate.

There’s a Catholic High School in my home town named “Kapaun”, or if you wanted to go into detail, “Bishop Kapaun”. Not until decades later did I come across the story behind the name.

From Wikipedia:

Emil Joseph Kapaun (April 20, 1916 - May 23, 1951) was a Roman Catholic priest and United States Army chaplain who died as a prisoner of war in the Korean War. In 1993, the Pope declared him a Servant of God, the first stage on the path to Catholic sainthood. On April 11, 2013, President Barack Obama presented the Medal of Honor posthumously to Captain Chaplain Kapaun for his actions on November 1-2, 1950 in North Korea. He is the ninth American military chaplain Medal of Honor recipient.

The story is not behind a paywall but it is behind this Link.

Wow! He actually said that on Morning Joe? Did he get the whole sentence out before Joe started screaming over him?
