One of the reasons I love Bob Schneider’s music so much is that his lyrics occasionally get completely wacky, but still there’s something in there that’s really touching. Here’s the latest video from his EP King Kong Vol. 1.

UConn Says Ollie, Assistants Won’t Travel To Indy For Final Four

Kevin Ollie and UConn assistant coaches will not travel to Indiana for the Final Four this week.

UConn President Susan Herbst announced the decision Tuesday night in response to Indiana’s controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act and the travel ban for State of Connecticut employees issued by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy on Monday.

“In support of Gov. Malloy’s travel ban to the state of Indiana,” Herbst said in a statement released by the school, “Kevin Ollie and other members of the UConn men’s basketball staff will not travel to Indianapolis for the NCAA Final Four and events surrounding it. UConn is a community that values all of our members and treats each person with the same degree of respect, regardless of their background and beliefs, and we will not tolerate any other behavior.”

Lutheran pastor resigns after being linked to threatening email

A Lutheran pastor in La Crosse resigned on Tuesday, four days after a vulgar and virulent email threatening to gang rape a Milwaukee bloggerwho criticized police work was sent from his home email address, a spokesman for the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod said……..

Van Fossen, a liberal Milwaukee activist and blogger, said she was inundated with emails and telephone calls critical of 𠂺 blog post in which she declared that police cause more harm than good. Much of the anger was directed at the timing of the post — one day after State Trooper Trevor Casper , 21, was shot and killed by a bank robber in Fond du Lac…….

The most extreme response to the post, Van Fossen said, was a screed dated March 27 from Wendt’s home email address calling her “the dumbest (expletive) liberal (expletive) I’ve heard yet.”

The email goes on to tell Van Fossen to “Get off the drugs, (expletive), and go check yourself into rehab. … Or better yet, you’re pretty hot. So how about if I come over and rape you with a few of my friends. WHEW! At least I won’t have to worry about you calling the police.”

Van Fossen traced the Internet Provider address to La Crosse and posted the email on Facebook.

My husband keeps getting text messages for family and friends in Iran celebrating that the US and Iran has come to an agreement on the nuclear issue and that President Obama will sign off on it.

He texts back that here in the US we don’t have that news but evidently it’s being reported in Iran that there is one.

I hope that they are right.

They didn’t. Not at all. This is what Chuck’s talking about: Sowing Mayhem, One Click at a Time

He is not without some talent — he effectively ended the career of the rising foreign policy analyst Elizabeth O’Bagy after exposing her conflicts of interest and fudged academic credentials.

Chuck wants people to think that by exposing O’Bagy’s exaggerations about her academic credentials he stopped a war. It’s delusional, like so much of the egomanical garbage that comes from Chuck.

Lutheran pastor resigns after being linked to threatening email

This prompted me to check Facebook and see if my cousin attends this church.

Unclear, but I was treated to a wingnut defense by her of how it is “incongruent” of people to decline to patronize Indiana over moral beliefs because of a bill that allows the vendor to decline to serve people because of moral beliefs. The person who posted in response about how this was just the updated version of segregation heard crickets from her. (Also bonus: another friend chiming in with the “it’s just like the federal version” canard.)

Facebook would be so much better if there was just a strong no politics rule. If you want to bury your head in the fucking sand, fine, do so, but don’t subject people around you to your derp and then never respond to facts. I’m fucking tired of that. I let it pass on Facebook only because I have a personal, inviolate no politics rule there, and I believe in setting an example.

But you know what? It sucks to know I have relatives who think I don’t deserve equal pay for equal work. It sucks to know I have friends who think they should have some say over what happens in my bedroom. It sucks to know I have relatives who are fine with discrimination in a non-religious context as long as it aligns with their religious beliefs.

But I guess respecting that back is important because different viewpoints, right?

There’s a very thin argument to be made in support of that idea. I’d say that the baker would have to write congratulations as long as they write both write it and charge straight couples for that addition. What the baker doesn’t have to do is stock same sex cake toppers (bride/bride and groom/groom.) However if they stock individual (not joined) mix and match cake toppers then they’d have to sell them to gays too.

These are all dick moves, but potentially defensible. What they can never do is deny gays a service they readily and eagerly sell to straights.

Speaking of Keith Richards, a little guitar trivia. For some tunes, Keith plays a Telecaster with the low E string removed (he uses an open G tuning and removing the E string makes it easier since he doesn’t need to avoid hitting that string).

Creationism, Eh?-version:

B.C. MP James Lunney leaves Tory caucus to defend ‘religious freedom’

A veteran Conservative MP is leaving the government caucus in order to defend his religious beliefs against what he describes as “deliberate attempts to suppress a Christian world-view from professional and economic opportunity in law, medicine, and academia.”

[…]

“Since two other politicians in Ontario and Alberta were targeted during the same period, it is clear that any politician or candidate of faith is going to be subjected to the same public scrutiny in coming elections,” he added.

[…]

His cause is this: creationism. He’s the one a while back who cried foul about people forcing him to admit that not only does he not accept evolution but that creationism ought to be taught.

My hopes for the new Mad Max sort of begin and end with it being pretty to look at. Miller has a style, both in the visuals in and costumes/settings, that I like. So my fear is the evocative, pretty bits have been used up in the promos.

I have no idea what to make of the new Star Wars.

The closest Metro to Josefov is Staromestska - that goes to Muzeum or Mustek, where there’s clothing stores. I know by Muzeum there’s still Bila Labut, a department store.

I called KLM about 6 times, so t-Mobile roaming charges go on the reimbursement.

They keep blaming the delivery service, they said our bag made it to Prague on the next flight and they turned it over to the courier which of course they can’t reach.

I asked them to have a KLM supervisor call me back.

I’m so sorry to hear that you’re still having problems with KLM and that they’re pushing the problem off on to their chosen courier service. It is still all on them, which doesn’t make it any easier.

And that your husband’s meds are still MIA is even more worrying and a real problem. I can only hope that you get the bags soon. In the meantime, if you might be able to get the meds you need from a local pharmacy after explaining the situation and it might get covered with trip insurance (if any), your regular insurance, or intl med insurance.

Wishing you the best that this doesn’t mess with the rest of your trip and that you’re both well.

243 lawhawk  Apr 1, 2015 4:54:14am

As for my own family situation, the best I can say is that things are in a holding pattern and more or less stable (if critical). Tests have to be run, read, interpreted, and course of action decided upon.

But the hospital had a very interesting open secret that I didn’t realize until told last night. We had been hearing music over the PA system every couple of hours, or bursts of music every so often.

Turns out, that was their way of announcing new babies being born. It was so sweet and cute, that it brought a tear to my eye. Considering what we’ve been dealing with, that was a very bright spot.

We have given up on the bag even though KLM still has 3 hours to bring it to this apt before we have to leave for the airport.

I also gave KLM the flight number to Tel Aviv (which is El Al) and the address where we are staying in Jerusalem.

We can replace all the clothes (including the Sabbath frock) in Israel, and Zedushka is preparing a list of his meds for his doctors subs (who are also all on vacation) to fill at a pharmacy in Jerusalem. Buying stuff in Israel is a lot easier because we know where the stores are & speak the language.

There is no point in chasing around to buy underwear & stuff in Prague, we’ll enjoy lunch and I’ll buy some tchotchkas.

OTOH, what kind of leader does that make Pence? Pence deserves condemnation for his actions. He’s nothing, if not one of them, and as complicit, his “clarifications” not withstanding.

His asking for “clarification” legislation was simply a smokescreen hoping that the issue would go away. He knows that the legislature is not going to make a pass such a bill, and also not going to repeal the now existing law.

So he has now associated his name and state with the creation of Pink Crow. And the damage he will take is to his reputation, and we can hope, his political career.

Indiana’s citizens get to suffer the loss of business and the pointing and laughing from other states. Whether or not this causes the citizenry to reflect on who they want in office come the next election remains unknown.

If this vendor is asking what the event is, and then decides to refuse to give service (b/c the purchasers are gay, Jewish, religious minority, etc.), I’d sue under state and fed law that it is discriminatory and that service should not have been refused. Equal protection and all that.

The latter one shows that the class is doing a simulation with the students assuming the roles of press (2 students), POTUS, a few Cabinet positions, and a bunch of US Senators.

I presume they get time to interact and legislate with some individual goals. And then write a paper comparing and contrasting these results to reality. Makes sense for a government class, but I wouldn’t hold it as being that accurate a model.

(Reminds me of an anecdote of a friend of mine from college about what they did in a PoliSci class where groups of them simulated being various countries or other political groups for a period of time. He and another student were the Khmer Rouge.)

I think they’re hoping to attract business, or at least attention to their pizza joint in Nowhere, Indiana. It’s going to back fire on them, I bet.

WHO in the hell, gay or straight, has pizza at a wedding?!?! The owners are nothing but attention-seeking whores. They probably follow CCJ on twitter.

The family’s name is O’Connor? I wonder how they’d feel if a Muslim family who did not want to deal with Catholics put a sign on the front of their halal butcher shop reading: “No Dogs or Irishmen Allowed.”

Note: Such signs really did exist in the US in the 19th Century.

Rubio talks, but most of the party doesn’t seem to be listening. If the GOP wants to attract that demographic, they’re going to have to quell the rhetoric and fear-mongering about the “porous border,” and all the illegal immigrants come to destroy our very way of life. I don’t see that happening by 2016.

The press release Tweeted about is a tactic in service of a strategy. The tactic may well not work right away, but it’s not really meant to. It may not ultimately work at all, but what its meant to do is persuade people within the party to accept Rubio’s ideas on outreach.

You can think Rubio’s doomed, but at least give him credit for going out and trying to convince people to agree with him, rather than just doing the tired “Me Too!” dance of most politicians.

And Nigeria’s version of Pat Quinn gets the hook:

Fourth Time’s the Charm: Buhari Ousts Jonathan in Nigerian Election

In his fourth democratic bid for Nigeria’s presidency, former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari finally claimed victory Tuesday, beating incumbent Goodluck Jonathan by more than 2.5 million votes.

Nigeria’s national electoral commission announced the results close to 3 a.m. local time Wednesday, but Buhari had already announced his win on Tuesday evening and Jonathan reportedly called his rival and conceded defeat. He was widely congratulated for his willingness to accept his loss, and in a statement released late Tuesday, Jonathan said he “promised the country free and fair elections” and that he kept his word. “That is one legacy I will like to see endure,” he said.

The election marks the first time since Nigeria’s 1999 transition from military rule that the People’s Democratic Party has lost the country’s presidency and the first time an incumbent has been ousted from the office.

Representatives of the PDP on Tuesday claimed that the election had been marked by widespread fraud in certain states, raising fears that supporters of the ruling party may carry out acts of violence in coming days. When in 2011, Buhari lost to Jonathan, his supporters carried out bloody attacks that resulted in tit-for-tat violence that would eventually leave more than 800 dead in Nigeria’s northern states, a stronghold of support for the former military ruler.

Jonathan urged his supporters to avoid a violent reaction to his loss. “As I have always affirmed, nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian,” he said. “The unity, stability and progress of our dear country is more important than anything else.”

Like former Illinois Gov. Quinn, Jonathan simply couldn’t do his job well enough to win reelection a second time. Muhammadu Buhari has a reputation for being clean (not corrupt) and for understanding the challenges that Nigeria will face in trying to demolish Boko Haram.

Well; there is more to it. But not for the reason she thinks. The CSA emblem on many southern state flags actually went away for a while but was brought back in the Civil Rights era. That’s yet another reason why the flag is both a symbol of hate and not about “heritage” at all. Really, the Civil War was the most destructive event in our nation’s history. I am greatly amused by right wingers who constantly question the patriotism of liberals defending the flag of a “nation” whose actions caused a war that caused more deaths than all the other wars combined.

U.S. Resuming F-16, Tank Shipments to Egypt

ust in time for Egypt’s military campaign against Houthi rebels in Yemen, the White House announced Tuesday it would allow shipments of U.S. fighter jets, tanks, and missiles to Cairo — reversing earlier reluctance to supply heavy aid before President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi proves he has embraced democratic reforms.

President Barack Obama said he would withdraw a U.S. hold on the annual aid package — which has been in place since October 2013 — in a phone call to Sisi on Tuesday.

In a statement, National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said the Obama administration has “made clear our commitment to simultaneously pursuing our security interests and our support for meaningful Egyptian political reform.”

The decision to unlock part of the $1.3 billion in aid, as outlined in the 2015 appropriations law, came after officials examined the Pentagon’s relationship with Cairo “to determine what types of support make most sense — for the United States and for Egypt — under present conditions in Egypt and the region,” Meehan said.

SNIP

Overall, the United States will send 12 F-16 jets, 20 Harpoon missiles, and as many as 125 Abrams “tank kits,” to be shipped to Egypt in pieces and assembled at a factory that is owned by the Egyptian Army. Officials said it is being sent to help Cairo deal with urgent national security and counterterrorism concerns.

It’s the sale by France to Egypt of Rafale fighters that also helped pushed this sale through IMO. If Obama had continued to block the F-16 sale, Egypt would have just purchased more Rafales and General Dynamics would have lost a customer. Obama would rather a US firm got the business, so he OKed the deal. This is just my opinion, however.

Supreme Court Rules JCPenney Allowed to Sacrifice Employees to Appease Cthulhu

Citing the newly-established precedent of corporate-religious exemption, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Tuesday in favor of JCPenney, upholding the company’s right to sacrifice pure-hearted employees in order to assuage the Dread Lord Cthulhu, Bringer of Madness.

The Penney estate, devout cultists and owners of the multibillion-dollar chain of mid-range department stores, joined by CEO Mike Ullman, sued the government in 2012 when new federal employee protections made it illegal for them to hire virgin maidens for the sole purpose of spilling their blood on the Altar of the Cosmos, with the hope that such an offering will prolong the Great Old One’s slumber in the sunken city of R’lyeh.

These are the same people who can’t wrap their head around the fact that a flexible word like “theory” can have different definitions, but at the same time they define the unambiguous word “discriminate” to mean “whatever hypocritical bullshit happens to fall out of my mouth as justification for bigotry.”

And as long as we’re on the subject, isn’t it Christian conservatives who are bitching and whining loudest about the lousy economy? Are you telling me, really telling me, that the small town shitty pizza business is booming to such a degree that you can turn away customers, especially HUGE PROFITABLE catering jobs? Yes? No? So which is it? The economy is so great you can pick and choose your customers in a business where 80% of ventures fail within the first five years? Or the economy is hugely shitty because Obama? Which is it?

But that aside, seriously, is this really a thing? I mean REALLY?

Why the bigots fail in expropriating MLK’s legacy:

Civil rights movement goal: have everybody treated equally in the public sphere, while maintaining freedom of the individual.

Bigot perception; Blacks, gays, women, etc get special privileges because the public has to change the way they act toward previously discriminated against minorities.

Bigot reaction: I should have a right to exercise religious freedom as an individual, in order to not treat everybody equally in the public sphere. Call others hypocrites when it is pointed out that this is the opposite of what MLK and others were about.

Hank: Hey Alice, let’s go to Memories pizza and get a pie ‘cuz they are standing up against Big Gay.

Alice: Dammit Hank, you know I don’t like Memories pizza.

Hank: Yeah, but you don’t like gays more than you hate their pizza.

Alice: You’re right Hank. Go ahead on and call them up and get a large with everything. And stop by the drug store and pick me up some Tums to fight the indigestion. I don’t want more bad Memories tonight as I try to sleep.

I guess its like making lemonade when life gives you lemons.

They can always bring back the Anti-Obama Deluxe Large for $12.99 Special again after this trend dies down.

So for whatever strange reason, these pizza people seem to think the new law allows them to discriminate against gays (i.e. Big Gay). But Gov Pence says law not discrimination. That’s what crunch con Rod Dreher says, too. Gov Pence says it’s media fault for spreading misinformation, slander and lies. What do these pizza people know that Gov Pence and Dreher don’t?

Speaking of sex… a friend came over for a visit yesterday and as we sat outside enjoying a slurp of wine there was a sudden KER-THUD! on the patio. It was a pair of large blackbirds that we presume were doing the birdie nasty in the live oak on a branch that wasn’t up to the challenge. They were quite stunned for a second or two as we all sat staring at each other, but then flew off apparently without harm.

So, it’s the avian version of falling off the bed.

If it had been a Republican, or anyone not a Kennedy, that man would have been defeated in the next election. Ted Kennedy’s ‘star power’ enabled him to survive in office, but for almost any other senator Chappaquiddick would have been a career-ender. And for someone who wasn’t rich, a screw-up like Chappaquiddick likely would have resulted in a prison sentence.

How’s Ex-Sen Vitter doing these days?

No beginning to wonder if I just have a tendency to end up with “large” cats since mine have generally been 9-13 lbs while my neighbors have two year-old cats that probably only weigh 7-8 lbs when wet.

Just talking domestic short-hairs and Siamese, not what you get when you start bringing breeds like Maine Coon into the mix.

Co-worker told a story today how he was born at 11:20pm on April 1 - and his mother convinced the doctor to change to birth date to 12:20am on April 2 out of fear he would be picked on while growing up.

His mother didn’t tell him of this until he was 35.

It’s an annotated take on the IN RFRA and shows just how BS Pence’s claim that it is no different than fed or other state RFRAs.

Like I’ve been saying for a while, the right wing nutters who say Democrats enacted the fed RFRA and this is no different are lying to themselves and everyone around them since there are substantive differences that have serious legal consequences.

The IN law justifies and protects discrimination - and opens the door for private parties to use this law as a defense in private actions claiming discriminatory acts.

So the state is continuing to ignore the problem by telling me that not running water while brushing my teeth and taking shorter showers is going to somehow help.

Meanwhile, San Joaquin Valley farms still use bronze age irrigation techniques in the 21st century and bottled water selling corporations continue to drain reservoirs to send product out of state.

And we are still doing next to nothing about AGW.

To be fair, I don’t think there is anything unconstitutional about promoting abstinence even if it is informed by his religious views. Stupid and counter productive yes, unconstitutional, not by a long shot.

There’s a mountain of evidence* that proves that it does not work as a form of sex education, so AFAIC it’s a religious belief being pushed on everyone else.

The end of shitty Tex-Mex food in San Francisco is here!

insidescoopsf.sfgate.com

There was a time in San Francisco history when Chevys scattered the city’s great hills and thoroughfares, but alas, for the first time in years, San Francisco has no Chevys locations.

The city’s final Chevys location on the SoMa corner of Third and Howard closed on Friday, March 27. Word on the street is that landlord lease issues were the reason for the closure; it opened in 2000. No word yet on what will take the prime, Moscone-adjacent space.
