I’m betting on the whole Chamberlain peace in our time line, ignoring that Reagan cut a deal with the Soviets on arms control, and that deal pushed concept of trust, but verify.

Do the right wingers think that there will be no verification, or that blind trust is all the P5+1 will do?

More to the point, it does seem that right wing and a bunch of Israelis think that these talks consist solely of the US and Iran, and that everyone else has to abide by the deal. There are multiple countries involved, and the talks are the work of consensus between the parties. Any deal will have to be signed off by all those involved, not just the US and Iran.

Of course, the right wing wont stop trying to sabotage any deal done. They’ve threatened as much.

It should also be remembered that the deals that Reagan negotiated with the USSR concerning nuclear arms did not meet the demands of the extremes, they did not seek total disarmament but they also got rid of more weapons and types of weapons than hardliners approved of. Anybody who has a modicum of sanity would say that was a good deal, but I don’t doubt that the hardliners here and Iran will cry foul.

My understanding has been for awhile now that we had the opportunity in 2003 to get a deal with Iran that would have dismantled much of the work they were doing, that they offered it to us in the wake of Iraq. But they would not go so far as regime change, so the White House ignored the offer and just pushed forward with the saber rattling.

IIRC Iran had another reformist as president during that time period. Ahmadinjad didn’t come in until later. But man just thinking about that, so frustrating and to think that the Republican nominee if elected would echo that same type of approach.

When talking about the Iranian program people forget their position. From their view they have the Sunni Bomb in Pakistan, the Hindu bomb in India, the Jewish bomb in Israel, so I understand why they are trying to get one.
On the other hand one more belligerent nation in that neighborhood with nukes would pretty much guarantee a nuclear war there.

43 lawhawk  Apr 2, 2015 11:50:22am

re: #27 Thanos

I think the Israeli nuclear program isn’t even part of their calculus. First and foremost is that Pakistan is nuclear (and Pakistan is nuclear to offset the Indian nuclear program, all an outgrowth of the separation of Pakistan and India after end of British colonial rule). Pakistan has shown itself willing to proliferate nuclear tech to others, and there’s longstanding rumors that Pakistan would provide nukes to Saudi Arabia if Iran went nuclear.

The Sunni-Shi’ite schism is a significant part to the backdrop. Regional rivalries also come into play, and both Iran and Saudi Arabia (and Gulf States) want to assure dominance/prominence, so they’re all trying to undermine the other.

Israel, for its part, wants to survive without fear of being thrown into the sea (and has done its share of military actions to go after perceived threats - Osirak and Syrian nuke facility raids, to name but two). But it’s nuclear ambiguity and willingness to hit at others for their nuclear programs can also spur those other nations to develop their own programs to offset the Israeli advantage.

Double edged sword - the nukes provide a certain level of protection to Israel, but are destabilizing all the same since others want that capability to equalize the threat (assuring mutual destruction).

Yeah, a framework deal that if everyone approves would cut all pathways to a nuclear weapon is a bad deal?

It’s almost like these folks aren’t reading. There’s lots of equivocation on the deal, and it’s success, particularly knowing that Iran has played games before (as have other countries like Iraq and North Korea when under scrutiny from IAEA), depends on all the parties cooperating.

If Iran doesn’t cooperate, then we’re still in the same position if no deal were in place.

That last big is ignored by the right wingers.

The Iranian people are really happy and relieved that this is happening. They were mumbling that the Ayatollah issued a fatwa against a nuclear bomb yet would let them suffer under sanctions by not being willing to prove it.

Yet there is another contingent of Iranians, not living in Iran, who were hoping for increased sanctions that might spur unrest and overthrow the government. Of course, they don’t live in Iran and wouldn’t have to suffer.

One other group that says this just underlines the hypocracy of the West and Israel sitting on their stockpiles of nuclear arms.

We hear about the Revolutionary guards and the Beseji fighting ISIS in Iraq but there is not one word of ISIS or the Iranian government doing anything in the Iranian press. No mention of ISIS ever. I think my favorite RWNJ bullshit about all this was the wannabe intellectual who tried to tell me that bakers are artists and that trying to get them to serve gays was somehow a violation of their free speech rights. That was a special bit of stupid.

Cal Thomas started an article with:

“If I visit a kosher restaurant and order a pork chop, am I being discriminated against when the waiter says they don’t serve pork?”

If I walked into a kosher deli, and order an oil filter, am I being discriminated against if the waiter says they don’t serve car parts?

154 HappyWarrior  Apr 2, 2015 1:16:59pm

Listen as an American with relatives that were directly impacted by the Munich Agreement, it really pisses me off that every time this sort of thing happens the Republicans bring up Munich and Neville Chamberlain as if Chamberlain was just patting Hitler on the back and saying “Go ahead and take over Czechoslovakia, dear old boy, we don’t care.” Was Munich a mistake? Certainly. Are a lot of people’s perceptions of it overblown because of hindsight bias and ignoring that our own country wouldn’t have gone to war with Nazi Germany if Hitler hadn’t declared war on us? Absolutely.

What moronic conservatives like Cal don’t want to get at is teh fact that the cake the gay couples are asking for is the same as the ones they’re baking the straight couples. It’s more like if I go into a koshe restaurant and ask for a kosher meal and the waiter asks me if I’m Jewish and I reply no, he refuses to serve me and tells me I’m a heathen.
