PEDESTRIAN AT BEST was written by Courtney Barnett
I love you I hate you
I’m on the fence it all depends
whether I’m up I’m down
I’m on the mend
transcending all reality.
I like you despise you admire you
what are we gonna do
when everything all falls through?
I must confess I’ve made a mess
of what should be a small success
but I digress
at least I’ve tried my very best I guess.
This that the other
why even bother,
it won’t be with me on my death bed,
but I’ll still be in your head.

Put me on a pedestal and I’ll only disappoint you.
Tell me I’m exceptional I promise to exploit you.
Give me all your money and I’ll make some origami, honey.
I think you’re a joke but I don’t find you very funny.

My internal monologue
is saturated analogue,
It’s scratched and drifting,
I’ve become attached to the idea
it’s all a shifting dream bitter sweet philosophy,
I’ve got no idea how I even got here.
I’m resentful
I’m having an existential time crisis,
what bliss, daylight savings won’t fix this mess.
Underworked and oversexed
I must express my disinterest,
the rats are back inside my head
what would Freud have said?

Put me on a pedestal and I’ll only disappoint you.
Tell me I’m exceptional I promise to exploit you.
Give me all your money and I’ll make some origami, honey.
I think you’re a joke but I don’t find you very funny.

I wanna wash out my head with turpentine and cyanide,
I dislike this internal diatribe
when I try to catch your eye
I hate seeing you crying in the kitchen
I don’t know why it affects me like this when you’re not even mine to consider.
Erroneous.
Harmonious.
I’m hardly sanctimonious.
Dirty clothes, I suppose,
we all outgrow ourselves.
I’m a fake,
I’m a phoney,
I’m awake,
I’m alone,
I’m homely,
I’m a Scorpio.

Put me on a pedestal and I’ll only disappoint you.
Tell me I’m exceptional I promise to exploit you.
Give me all your money and I’ll make some origami, honey.
I think you’re a joke but I don’t find you very funny.

Nice little pop rocker.

It even reminded me a tiny bit of The Buzzcocks.

The flagpole at the Indiana state capitol is flying a white flag:

Pence signs ‘fix’ for religious freedom law

Indiana’s social conservatives wanted a law that insulated them from the gay rights movement. Instead, the state has now enacted protections based on sexual orientation for the first time in its history.

Top Indiana Republican lawmakers overhauled their week-old religious freedom law Thursday with a follow-up measure intended to ease concerns driven by businesses that it could lead to discrimination. Gov. Mike Pence then signed it into law.

The changes appear to have tamped down some of the criticism — but in doing so Pence and lawmakers infuriated social conservative activists and set the stage for a bigger fight next year over expanding Indiana’s anti-discrimination law to cover gays and lesbians.

SNIP

The changes prohibit businesses from using the law as a defense in court for refusing “to offer or provide services, facilities, use of public accommodations, goods, employment, or housing” to any customers based on “race, color, religion, ancestry, age, national origin, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or United States military service.”

It doesn’t accomplish what the law’s critics wanted most: Adding sexual orientation to the list of categories protected by Indiana’s anti-discrimination law.

But that debate, GOP legislators acknowledged, is coming soon. House Speaker Brian Bosma said the backlash against the religious freedom law has “opened many perspectives” and that the anti-discrimination law “needs to be discussed.”

I’ve highlighted the first bit because it shows how the social conservative activists have been hoist by their own petard.

I am suddenly seeing a lot of stuff online about a study by Bjorn Stevens at Max Planck Institute on “aerosol forcing.” Can’t follow it very well, but it’s splashed all over climate change denial sites as a “game changer” and something that will leave climate change “zealots” and “alarmists” flat-footed. That kind of terminology of course raises a lot of red flags … not exactly sober scientific talk. Anyone know about this study?

So, Courtney is a 28 singer-songwriter from Melbourne Australia.

And Wiki entry says “Known for her witty, rambling lyrics and deadpan singing style.”

Cool!

Go get ‘em Courtney. No stupid voice-enhanced girl pop crap for her!

I took my app to my favorite needlework store today but was unable to get anyone to try it and give me feedback about what seemed logical and what I should be sure to focus on explaining. Sigh. I will just try to cover what I think are the important points and then try one of the other needlework stores in the area sometime next week.

Oh well. Back to trying the website into submission.

That kind of terminology of course raises a lot of red flags … not exactly sober scientific talk. Anyone know about this study?

I searched for some scientific commentary on his paper, and found his own summary of his findings:

In this talk I will argue that the role of aerosol forcing has been greatly exaggerated, but to the extent the aerosol is responsible for a substantial forcing of the climate system this forcing was realized in the middle of the last century, and for both reasons the aerosol has ceased to be important for present or future changes in the global climate.

eaps-mit.edu

His journal abstract is here: journals.ametsoc.org . The paper is itself is paywalled.

I gather his argument is aerosol forcing of climate change has already happened, in the middle of the last century, and is now no longer a driver of climate change. He is not saying climate change is not happening at all, so I doubt his paper is much of a “game changer.” The denialists tend to grasp at straws, and more than likely most have not read the full paper.

Aerosols do two things: they trap heat from the surface of the Earth, and radiate (reflect) heat from the Sun. His paper discusses the lower bound (that is, the possible minimum value) for such thermal effects. The abstract says the lower bound is less negative (in the arithmetic sense) and more certain now.

ADDENDUM: He has written before about aerosol forcing, in 2013. HIs conclusion then was aerosol forcing of climate is less important than other effects, such as ocean temperatures and CO2 levels mpimet.mpg.de

Tell me again why diplomacy and negotiation in conjunction with others in this matter is a bad thing. I know it’s not as exciting as selling arms to Iran in violation of Congress in order to pay for the release of hostages, and divert the fund to the Contras, in violation of Congress. I mean, if we had a real imperial president we’d just pay off Iran. None of this fancy-pants diplomacy.

I think I’m going to go study for a while. I’m getting antsy.

Frankly it’s not about what was done, it’s about who did it. If this had been accomplished by a GOP administration, the right would be wanting Nobel prizes placed on top the heads of the president and his SoS but because it’s Obama, IT’S MUNOICH 2.0!!!!!!!!

I did a little checking and think you summed it up well. This is basically an investigation into the mechanisms driving climate change. His conclusion is that aerosol forcing is no longer a primary factor. He’s not saying climate change isn’t occurring, just investigating which mechanisms are responsible.

Think of it as ruling out a suspect for a crime. The fact that one suspect isn’t guilty doesn’t mean no crime occurred.

My initial search for the term aerosol forcing pulled up tons of RWNJ sites. Guess this is their latest attempt to try to make their denialism seem rational and fact based.

I don’t know about other states but the Civil Rights movement for me was always taught towards the end of the school year and by then everyone was looking forward to summer.

I would wager most of them have not read the paper in full (you have to pay money to see it online), or if they have, are misconstruing its findings. Science papers are not that easy to read for a layman, to begin with, and if you read them with a preconceived notion in your head, you can probably find what you want to see to support those notions. (See which, quote mining the Bible)

Science papers are some pretty dense reading, written by scientists for scientists, and a specific group of scientists at that. It’s one reason why science journalists mischaracterize scientific papers so often. The reporters want bombast. Very few science papers provide it, though there are exceptions. Most people paid no attention to Einstein’s 1905 and 1911 papers on relativity until the 1919 solar eclipse, when astronomers verified one of his predictions of general relativity. That was bombastic.

I think alot of people are shocked at the violence. I think your average student knows that it wasn’t easy but they’re obviously shocked to see that plenty of people were murdered simply because they were supporting civil rights. I remember watching the film Mississippi Burning and yes I realize a lot of the film is fictional but it left a deep impression on me. And then it made me ill later seeing that Reagan announced his presidential run in the same town with a speech about states rights.

Yeah. There were a lot of eyeballs getting wide when they saw the beatings and the nastiness of the whites along the way. I love Mississippi Burning, even though it’s a lot of fiction.

This one is mostly for cross stitching or embroidery, but I may have to think about how easily I could adapt it to something useful for folks in those areas.

Yeah it while it gets the FBI’s role wrong really does show what the activists were up against. i like to think I would have had the courage to have joined them but I can’t honestly tell you what I would have felt had I been a college student and I had read what happened to those three guys. Just awful. really the Southern judicial system before integration was awful. You’d have blacks executed for the most petty of crimes and a white could get off for killing a black person. And there’s still a lot of problems.

April 2, 2015 — There are now 25 states that bar private health plans offered through the Affordable Care Act’s (PL 111-148) insurance marketplaces from including abortion coverage, and lawmakers are set to consider similar measures in other states this year, National Journal reports (Owens, National Journal, 4/1).

Background

The ACA requires insurers to keep funds for abortion coverage separate from those for other health services as a way to ensure that federal tax credits do not pay for abortion (Women’s Health Policy Report, 2/20).

the monies cannot mix?

Are they afraid they might make more little tax-exempt baby monies?

Another example of unintended consequences. A Missouri Christian website called Exodus Cry blogged about the movie, Pretty Woman, saying it glorified prostitution and lured young women into a life of sin. The blog was reprinted in a women’s publication in Australia, and sex workers in Sydney — where prostitution is legal — took to posting selfies on social media in protest.

bbc.com

[The blog author] told BBC Trending that she stands by what she wrote despite the sex workers’ campaign, and that legalised prostitution creates an environment where illegal sex trafficking can then occur. “Just because there’s a handful of women and men who are posting pictures on Twitter saying this is an empowering job doesn’t make it true about the industry,” she said. “They have a voice but they’re the voice of a very small minority who have the privilege of getting on Twitter and being able to post those kinds of pictures”.

Tilly Lawless [who started the selfie trend] told us she remains angry about these arguments, which “allow us to be oppressed in similar ways to women being trafficked, undermine our independence and autonomy and take away rights from us”.

Out of concern for a depletion in the number of honey bees in recent years, the city of Portland, OR has approved a ban on the use of an insecticide that conservationists say is to blame for killing off the honeymakers, despite protests from some local farmers.

The Portland City Commission voted unanimously to suspend use of products containing neonicotinoids, effective immediately, reports Reuters. This makes the eighth U.S municipality to outlaw the insecticides as activists make the case that it’s the reason bees and other pollinating insects have been dying off.

Frustrated at how this news was presented-Orange County has upped the bar on “good cause” to get a CCW. It got reported that “self defense will no longer be considered adequate cause”. Wut?

Turns out (sigh) you do need to cite a specific threat. But still you get your permit for self defense. If you can show good cause. Like maybe what you have to carry around for work, or having been threatened by a violent person. I was listening to AM 1070 a 24 hour news / traffic station. Not a political format at all. But they cut it short enough to further a major misunderstanding of events.

I mean as an American whose family in Czechoslovakia was directly impacted by the appeasement, yeah it’s something that bothers me but I don’t use Chamberlain as a scapegoat or act like Churchill was totally awesome. Fact is WWI and its consequences left the leaders of what became the Allies between a rock and a hard place. And what’s really annoying to me is the people who bring up Munich the most are Americans who are totally oblivious to the fact that we probably would have never gone to war with Nazi Germany if Hitler hadn’t stupidly declared war on us first.

If this teacher had been questioning creationism or climate change or the causes of the Civil War, the RWNJ media would be calling for her head on a platter. Funny how they aren’t.

How about a moratorium on questioning other people’s religious bent? If they say they are X, they should have the benefit of the doubt. Yes, I realize this would apply to people like David Vitter, but it seems better than the alternative.

Will check those out. I actually had a little bit of a crush on Tracy Austin as a kid, but thought Chris Everett was hotter. ;)

I’ve always had a bit of a crush on Arantxa Sánchez Vicario myself, for which I’ve caught impish hell for years from my Spanish friends because her family were supporters of Franco. They’re all Gaby Sabatini fans. Not that I blame them, Gaby was fantasica, but I liked Arantxa’s spunk and nobody has bettered her at the lob.

I’ve noticed over the past couple of seasons that players are using the lob more often as a tool, but Arantxa used it as part of her strategy. Big diff.

Belated reply, but wanted to say that the Green Book was one of the eye-openers I’ve come across while trying to research the Civil Rights era for a novel. One of the reminders of how segregation affected every aspect of life in very real and inescapable ways. DWB - driving while black has always had dangers that a white person never has to think about.

Another discovery in the research was the mountain resort at Lincoln Hills, Colorado — ran from 1922-66, and for many of those years it was the only resort west of the Mississippi that catered specifically to African-Americans. Jim Crow may have reigned in the South, but it extended across the country.

One degree of separation. A friend of mine had one and let me try it out once at his home. He was a university math professor, and he lugged it around to conferences.

It had a teeny tiny CRT screen, and was quite a hefty piece of hardware, both in cost and weight.

This. It’s money. You don’t have to like the people you’re serving. Just. Serve. The. Stuff. Deposit the money and be done with it. There’s no Christian doctrine that specifies telling people “fuck off” who want a cake/pizza/whatever.

We also ate at this restaurant:
Their catering van is parked in front of the old cemetery gate. People are asking “why is the catering van parked at the cemetery, who eats at the cemetery?” Well obviously it’s to alert tourists to the existence of this restaurant, and hundreds of tourists pass this spot every day. Also maybe the caterer lives in the same building we were staying at.

The restaurant is in an old wine cellar and specializes in Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine. I ordered the goulash and it was incredible.

Landlord Sends Man $1,200 Bill To Cleanup His Roommate’s Blood, Who Was Shot Dead By Police

thinkprogress.org

“Last month, a Madison, WI, police officer shot and killed Tony Terrell Robinson Jr., an unarmed 19-year-old. The city’s chief of police has compared the case to death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO.

“On Wednesday, the Wisconsin-based Devil’s Advocates Radio Network reported that Robinson’s surviving roommate, Anthony M. Limon, had received an eviction notice, giving him five days to vacate their Madison apartment or pay their three-days-late rent and $1,192.15 for “bio-hazard cleanup” for removal of Robinson’s blood from the apartment. The notice was addressed to Limon and his mother, whose name also appears on the lease.”

“The notice was sent by landlord Ray A. Peterson. Peterson told Devil’s Advocates co-host Mike Crute that he believed it appropriate to bill Limon for the bio-hazard removal because Robinson’s name did not appear on the lease.” More

It appears my DIL is having landlord problems, also, a bait and switch operation in which people are told untrue things about whether or not they are actually buying a place. Many of her neighbors are Latinos and like her, just needed a place to live, so all of them are getting ripped off. She’s bringing her alleged “lease/purchase contract” this weekend so I can look at it, although the “rent” she says she pays is supposed to be going toward a lease/purchase arrangement. Those are never a good deal, since the landlord apparently won’t repair anything and makes the tenants do it all. Iran and the US are alike in some respects, esp as youth rise up against theocratic oppressors who stifle those freedoms we too often take for granted in the US, creativity and the aspirations of life itself. And although we in the US don’t live in such a theocracy, there are plenty here who would wish it on us, as we’ve recently witnessed. We should never allow that to happen—it’s been done in other societies, and it’s a failure for anyone who really does love and respect life.

My inspiration has always been, since I was a young girl, to “do no harm” and to try making life here on earth as good as possible for everyone, not look to a reward in a “hereafter” at all. And I have fought for that, will continue fighting for that until the day I die and no longer exist. Call me a Pollyanna or naive, but it’s what I do and it gives me peace to know I’m doing the best I can while I’m still here and striving to understand that which I don’t yet understand, even at my advanced age.

Yeah, none of us here expect to get back our security deposits, even though my old landlord used both apts we live in here as “models” to show to bankers, etc. Rentals are OK if you can find a decent place with a decent landlord, but these current owner/mgmt co are a Clown Car just out to make money.

I don’t even expect the present “owner” (an LLC) to keep this property very long, but will probably flip it to make a profit.

Our old landlord would have already seeded and fertilized the extensive grassy areas by now. He was a “grass guy” who mowed at least once a week in the summer. The landlady did the plantings and I do pot gardening. No, no, not that kind, although I might if I could get away with it. : )

Chuck want’s to build an auction clearinghouse to allow anonymous Randos to blackmail whoever they please, probably in exchange for whole chickens stuffed with flash drives full of bitcoin or something equally addletarded. He’s desperate to commoditize his obsession with “opposition research” but how to deal with the fact there are only so many quasi “legit” targets in politics and media?

And then the answer struck him. Golly gee wouldn’t it be nice if everyone got to live in fear of packs of coercive, grotesque bottom feeding sewer dwellers crawling through all of society’s rotten shit and selling the undigested bits of corn and peanut back to the highest bidder.

This episode was about a Turkish confectionery in Cologne and at 11:05 the host asks about a wedding cake with two men as toppers that he sees in the vitrine and the baker explains that they’re simply keeping up with the times and why wouldn’t one want to offer cakes to same-sex couples when they marry.

Exactly. Crowder’s secret shopper isn’t gay, what he was doing was the sexual identity equivalent of shucking and jiving in blackface. However problematic the bigoted reactions / refusals he managed to elicit may be, his performance was an intrinsically inauthentic and patently offensive stereotype, itself deeply rooted in his own prejudices.

248 The Week Of No Pie  Apr 3, 2015 5:23:42am

Crowder went to a halal bakery in “sharia-controlled” Dearborn MI to order his GAYEY GAY FABULOUS GAY CAKE

I actually watched the entire nauseating homophobic Islamophobic video. He actually went FROM BAKERY TO BAKERY until he found ONE Muslim baker who was hesitant to make a GAYEY GAY FABULOUS GAY CAKE but other halal bakeries that he went to agreed to make it. Then he had to make his customized order more and more outrageous until they refused.

In other words, it was an O’Keefe stunt.

It could easily be that Crowder’s video is an O’Queef-job. We don’t know how honest the editing is and whether he supplied the full context. The point is, this is not something that can be established or refuted from the video itself. If his claims are honest (and there is considerable doubt about that, but they haven’t been refuted yet), then it’s not a case of false equivalence. It would, in fact, be the same as a Christian bakery refusing to cater to a gay wedding.

If the Obama’s wanted, they could easily have a unique entertainment show for TV. Think of all the stuff they could cover and do it well from knowing about it, being good at it, etc. Politics, current events, entertainment industry, comedy, sports…on and on.

Hmmm. I want intellectual rights if anything like this should happen.

This is how a “Christian” spends Good Friday.

[Embedded content]

As I expressed my frustration about that excrement the other day…

Look at your TV. Count the people on it who claim to be Christian. When you get to 100 pause and consider them. Most will be people who loudly claim to know God’s will for all and that we must follow their teaching or there will be (literally) hell to pay. If you’re lucky, out of that hundred, you might see 2? perhaps even 5? that actually live the Way of Jesus? The ones who actually give Witness to God rather than to the dictates of their wallet?

For that majority, their words are put to the lie by the lives they live, the actions they call “good”, and that more than any other reason is why so many Millennials are rightfully walking away from the church. Possibly as much as 99% of current evangelism is based on the arrogant presumption that they are - no, make that we are - the only doorway to God even though so very few of these ministers have ever walked through that doorway themselves.

No, but (as a non-religious person, so my understanding may be flawed) I thought the commandments were a Big Deal. The bedrock and highest part of the law. Did you read Jim Wright’s latest rant over at Stonekettle Station? It’s epic—made me LOL at least half a dozen times. After talking about some of the Twitter derp related to the RFRA, he goes on to talk about that guy in California who proposed that “Sodomite Suppression Act” saying people should be allowed to murder gays.

That’s when it starts to get really good:

You know what I think?

I think this is as good of place as any to get this hate right out into the open.

I think it’s about time to drag this festering murderous Christian bigotry out of the dark kicking and screaming and spastically clutching its little plastic Jesus, drag it out into the light where we can all see the ugly hunchback pinheaded slobbering monster clearly for what it is.

Go on, get it out in front of the voters.

But — but — instead of the Sodomite Suppression Act, let’s call it The Mandatory Christian Compliance Act.

No more cherry picking Leviticus for Christians.

From now on, for those who identify as Christian fundamentalists, if you insist that the rest of us comply with your religious ideas, if you’re going to demand the right to kill Sodomites as your God commanded, then you have to comply with all of His law, all of it, to the letter, not just the part you like.

Since the primary Christian objections to homosexuality come from the Book of Leviticus, let’s just us see what other requirements that part of the Bible levies on Christians, shall we? […]

In the same vein, RudePundit’s response to the freakout of Erick, Son of Erick and the rest of the Peanut Gallery over the “clarification” is good stuff as well. Particularly the last few paragraphs:

Here’s another take for Erickson, a hand of kindness reached out to someone who sees only demons where he should see human beings, a flower instead of a straitjacket: Religion adapts, evolves, changes as people change. When Christianity spread to Latin America (or was forced on the people there by cruel colonists and missionaries…sorry, trying to be nice here), the people put their own spin on the icons and the imagery and, yes, the message. Back in the day, Christianity used to mean killing infidels, much like a sect of a certain, younger religion. But that was untenable in an industrializing, urbanizing, wider-educated Western world. So it changed. Churches were segregated in many places, with racism justified through sins of Cain or some such shit. That changed (well, it’s not enforced, although many churches are still self-…ok, ok), too. When one group of Christians didn’t like what another group of Christians was doing, they broke off and formed their own version of the faith.

In other words, stop being such a whiny ****faced ferret (or ferret-faced ****, whichever way works better for you), Erick “Erick” Erickson. Your precious faith will survive because people are scared and ignorant and want to believe in phantoms and miracles. It just won’t give a shit if someone is gay.

And those who still do? We’ll call them “Christian extremists.”

Run Ted, Run. He would be a perfect addition to the GOP Klown Kar.

Actually, Nugent recent said something far worse than a lie about a movement to get him to run for president:

Ted Nugent: Veterans Commit Suicide Because Obama Is President

guns.com saw the RWW piece and reported on it, adding some additional details:

Political theater at its finest, Ted Nugent said troops are telling him that they’re killing themselves because of President Obama.

“Here’s your job, Republican Party,” Nugent told an audience of silverware clinging against porcelain plates. “Twenty to 25 of those guys kill themselves every day, and they haven’t told you why, and they haven’t told anybody else why, but they told me why: because the Commander-in-Chief is the enemy.”

The statement capture on video, which was aggregated by the left-leaning website Right Wing Watch, is not given any context other than it was said during the Lincoln Day Dinner in Maricopa County, Arizona, on March 28.

Patrons who paid $250 a plate or $2,000 a table got to meet the aging rocker. Other presenters included Congressmen Matt Salmon, David Schweikert, Trent Franks, Sheriff Joe Arpaio and County Attorney Bill Montgomery.

This is not the first time Nugent connected veteran suicide to the president. Last May, during an interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, Nugent blamed what he views as Obama’s violations of the U.S. Constitutions as motive for veterans’ suicide as opposed to mental illness or post traumatic stress disorder.

Hannity got absolutely owned by, of all people, Pat Buchanan. Now I have no love at all for that blithering anti-Semite, but it was amusing.

Hannity began to get rather exercised. But Buchanan continued, undeterred.

BUCHANAN: Are we going to be frightened by words from some character in Iran? …Listen to the American head of intelligence. He says Iran does not have a bomb program as of 2013. Secondly, if they start building a bomb, we will know it. Third, Iran has made some concessions, they’re not enough, it makes them less able to get to a bomb…

…Your friend Bibi’s been talking about Iran getting a bomb since 1992. In 2006, he said they’ll be building 25 bombs by the end of the decade. Are they? No.

Buchanan also explained that U.S. and Iranian interests are allied to some degree right now.

BUCHANAN: In Iraq, Iran is fighting ISIS and Al Qaeda. In Syria, they’re fighting ISIS on behalf of Assad. In Yemen, they’re not involved there.

…Sean, they’re fighting our enemies. I’d rather have Iranians fighting in Tikrit and dying than American kids there.

But the best part was when Buchanan told Hannity, “The reason Iran is gonna be a power in the gulf is because your president, George W. Bush, invaded Iraq and turned it into an ally of Iran.”

Hannity tried to blame President Obama but Buchanan wasn’t having any of it.

BUCHANAN: Sean, the reason we’re in this position is because Saddam Hussein, a thug, was overthrown, his state was destroyed, his army was broken up. Elections were held by Bush’s democracy crusade and the Shia won and we lost Iraq!

Buchanan finished by making Hannity and Netanyahu look like cowards.

BUCHANAN: I’m not scared of Iran, for God’s sakes. They don’t have an atomic bomb. …Bibi’s sitting on 200 atom bombs and he’s fretting over Iran, which hasn’t even produced weapons grade uranium?

The United States could finish off Iran in an afternoon. What are you frightened of, Sean? …I think you’re hysterical, Sean.

From Crooks and Liars.

I don’t agree with the assessment that “We could finish off Iran in an afternoon”, nor do I think any rational person would.

Last I checked, sin wasn’t an item that existed whether you believed in it or not (if that’s your faith). Like gravity.

Discount store variety Christians. Pick’n’choose your sins, some are marked down and cost less, others are overpriced to make up the loss leaders.

In other words…not Christians at all.

I’ve always dreamed of sitting next to St. Peter and getting to watch him run those big ol’ pearly gates, ejection button at hand. I imagine that button gets a workout. Anyone who answers his first question, “are you a Christian” with all kinds of syrupy overdone positives saves time and gets the reject right off.

It’s like they read the economic portion and forget about the soc-con portion. Kind of like how Paul Ryan loved him some Ayn Rand and ignored that she was strongly supportive of legalized abortion and greatly condemned organized religion.

From what I’ve observed here in the South, a lot of Libertarians (and Independents) label themselves as such, but always vote straight-ticket GOP. In a nutshell, they are too cowardly to call themselves Republicans.

For argument’s sake, it should be kept in mind the Rouhani isn’t the one who has final say on whether Iran will honor the deal, as that decision is reserved for Khamenei. But seeing as he’s issued a fatwa against his nation having nukes and the same people who six years ago wanted the Mullahs out are today celebrating this deal, I think he’d be a fool to turn his back on it unless there was a major upset in the final negotiations.

The gospel Jesus actually said something opposite, it was Paul who was against the idea. (That said, in classical Christianity all Bible is the Word of God, so the gospel words are re-interpreted to mean that Jesus’ death was the “fulfillment of the law” and thus abolished it).

re: #456 Rev_Arthur_Icantbreatheing

I think the evidence of his existence is pretty undisputable. Too many witnesses.

What witnesses? None of the gospels were written by witnesses, they’re late hagiographies full of fabrications (virgin birth etc.). The earliest sources on Jesus are Paul’s letters and he wasn’t a witness, he claims to have gotten his teachings through revelation by resurrected Jesus in a vision. The closest he comes to naming a real witness is “James, brother of the Lord”, usually interpreted as Jesus’ brother. It may as well have been a literal brother of Jesus, but the reference is just too ambiguous, since all Christians were called brothers of Christ.

The earliest non-Christian sources are Josephus and Tacitus, both highly problematic as evidence for historicity.

While it seems more plausible that there was a Jewish preacher/rabbi that got mythologized with time, than that there was no such person at all, the evidence for this is neither indisputable, nor certain. I’d say, 55:45.

I’d guess that stats for prominent liberals or conservatives are about the same. People are people are people and they do what people do-including sometimes changing partners when they can.
Many conservatives are hypocritical about the sanctity of marriage. On the other hand, I’ve heard liberals talk about how the divorce was sad, but really best for everyone when the “everyone” it was best for was just the person who wanted the divorce.

re: #467 Nyet

While it seems more plausible that there was a Jewish preacher/rabbi that got mythologized with time, than there was no such person at all, the evidence for this is neither indisputable, nor certain. I’d say, 55:45.

you mentioned Josephus and Tacitus, so I’m not going to go over retread ground, but I’m going to ask this: You’re sure they made shit up based on nothing? I’d take a radical cult leader over that.

Rev, did you ever see the movie about them titled “The Flaming Lips - The Fearless Freaks?”

It’s really fun and also a bit gripping too when they talk about Steven Drozd’s drug issues and how creative he is and their fear of losing him.

Wayne Coyne, the main insanity leader, is just a great free spirit dude. I loved the scenes with his poor wife as he explains the huge cardboard, plywood and Styrofoam ‘space ship’ he was building in their back yard for a video/movie idea he has going on.

I got to see them on the Yoshima tour back about 2001 or so. They were on The Unlimited Sunshine Tour with Cake, Modest Mouse and a few others. A great show was had by all.

Right, it’s the hypocrisy that bothers me. I don’t want to hear Newt Gingrich on marriage number four tell a gay couple who has been together for 50 years that them getting officially married ruins the sanctity of marriage especially given that Newt’s a serial adulterer.

Sometime During Eternity …
By Lawrence Ferlinghetti

Sometime during eternity
some guys show up
and one of them
who shows up real late
is a kind of carpenter
from some square-type place
like Galilee
and he starts wailing
and claiming he is hip
to who made heaven
and earth
and that the cat
who really laid it on us
is his Dad

And moreover
he adds
It’s all writ down
on some scroll-type parchments
which some henchmen
leave lying around the Dead Sea somewheres
a long time ago
and which you won’t even find
for a coupla thousand years or so
or at least for
nineteen hundred and fortyseven
of them
to be exact
and even then
nobody really believes them
or me
for that matter
You’re hot
they tell him
And they cool him

They stretch him on the Tree to cool

And everybody after that
is always making models
of this Tree
with Him hung up
and always crooning His name
and calling Him to come down
and sit in
on their combo
as if he is the king cat
who’s got to blow
or they can’t quite make it

Only he don’t come down
from His Tree
Him just hang there
on His Tree
looking real Petered out
and real cool
and also
according to a roundup
of late world news
from the usual unreliable sources
real dead

Ferlinghetti and I may both burn in hell for this one. OTOH, I’d rather be in hell with Ferlinghetti than be in heaven with Pat Robertson.

Well, yeah, given that I accept that man->myth is (slightly) more probable than myth->man, it’s strange to ask me “You’re sure they made shit up based on nothing?” ;)

BTW, “on nothing” is an exaggeration. If Jesus (which conveniently means “Savior”) is mythical, he would be a result of the process known as Euhemerization which happened to other mythological personages. At first he would be conceived as a heavenly being (and he was in fact conceived by first Christians as an archangel of God/sub-God - see Bart Ehrman’s latest book), then with decades various “earthly” details would be added to his biography. We do actually have an early apocryphon - Ascension of Isaiah - in which Jesus is crucified not on earth but rather by demons in a heavenly, sublunar realm. And the canonical book of Hebrews basically depicts Jesus as a heavenly High Priest who performed his sacrifice in the heavenly Temple. Acc. to mythicists these are the traces of the original belief in a purely heavenly Jesus who was then supplanted by an earthly one and euhemerized.

Now, frankly, I would need more convincing before accepting this hypothesis as more probable, but neither is it inherently implausible by itself.

503 ObserverArt  Apr 3, 2015 9:45:30am

I think the reason ‘Christians’ (not really) hate the back track on the religion protection acts is they would have been able to get their hate on without directly having to be involved. They had a chance to crow every time a gay person was rejected.

That is pure weapons grade hate right there. State sponsored.

And so very very far away from any real Christian teachings, but here they are. I’m sure they will figure out other ways though. They are good at this stuff. Christians had a lot to do with Temperance Movement…look how well that worked out.

I guess they always have to have someone to hate on. They can’t seem to do what is called for…look in on themselves and improve on their own issues…they just skip that part and start messing into other’s lives.

Instead of celebrating the good, they have to dig the dirt on others. Now, how ‘Christian’ is that?

History is awash with examples of the “other” who was blamed for all of society’s ills and how society couldn’t begin to right itself until it cast the “other” out or forced them to convert. Perhaps that’s why you don’t hear about many cases of Jewish stores wanting to ban gay customers, because they know what it’s like to be the target of society’s hatred.

Lisping, wiggling his hips and waving his hands, Crowder walked into bakeries in a heavily Muslim area of Dearborn, Michigan and performed an exaggerated pantomime of gay stereotypical behaviors.

“What do you think happens when a gay, like SUPER gay Crowder tries to get a super gay wedding cake baked at a Muslim bakery?” asked his blog breathlessly. “I’m pretty sure you can guess, but you might as well watch this week’s adventure to Dearborn, MI to find out!”

“Many” of the Muslim bakeries did agree to bake the cakes for Crowder and his pretend partner, he admitted. More, he said, that probably would have agreed had the bakeries been run by Christians. His video, however, only featured the three bakeries that refused.

Beck states flat out that America started WWII

“People make a big deal of ‘Death to America!’ chants,” Greenwald said. “But most people understand that rhetoric and actions aren’t the same. Iran can’t impose death on America. The United States took down Iranian government in 1979 — of course they’d be hostile to foreign invading powers.”

“I agree,” Beck responded, before veering on a historical tangent. “When we entered the Progressive Era, we caused World War II. We caused a lot of the animosity in South America, because [we imposed an ethos that] what’s good for us is good for you.”

BTW, three years ago or so I used to argue here, at LGF, very strongly against mythicism and for nearly certain historicity, dismissing mythicism as wholly without merit. I was basing my argument on what I perceived to be a convergence of evidence between Paul’s mention of “James, brother of the Lord” and Josephus’ alleged mention of James, brother of Jesus, called Christ. This seemed like slam dunk to me back then. It was only later that I got convinced that Josephus was most probably writing about Jesus ben Damneus (with “called Christ” being probably an accidental interpolation of a scribal note into the main text, a usual occurrence). There are several reasons for this (the context doesn’t seem to fit with the mention of our Jesus, but makes all the sense if ben Damneus is meant; and most importantly, this passage is never quoted by those early Christian apologists who used Josephus all the time for their purposes and would have seized upon such a juicy mention). And without Josephus’ support, Paul’s phrase is weak tea.

Add in all the cool little bits we’ve seen Barack do, and they are one fun, cool presidential couple. So much natural charisma.

If the Obama’s wanted, they could easily have a unique entertainment show for TV. Think of all the stuff they could cover and do it well from knowing about it, being good at it, etc. Politics, current events, entertainment industry, comedy, sports…on and on.

Cleaning house in between posting for this Sunday’s dinner. : )

Luckily, I have tile floors in kitchen going into the eating/LR area, so it’s pretty much a breeze. Very little vacuuming (which I hate), just a large area rug. : )

We are still in the 10 year battle to replace our carpeting. Every time we have the money we can’t agree on tile or hardwood.

I think we’ve finally settled on porcelain tile that looks like wood.

we have the guy coming next week to talk about installation.

BUT, that means we have to clean the carpet before The Easter Dinner.

The bill sponsored by state Rep. Pat McElraft (R) would lengthen the state’s waiting period for abortions to 72 hours from the current 24, and would prohibit doctors at some state-funded public colleges from performing elected abortions.

“We are multi-taskers here in the General Assembly,” McElcraft told local station WRAL, when asked why she was pushing the bill instead of focusing on economic issues facing the state. “I am absolutely an advocate for jobs, but we can do lots of the things. And actually, when we can have a few more little taxpayers born, why not?”

Hey all,

it’s morning again.

Today we have to clean the house for The Easter Dinner.

Nothing like the Orthodox Juice version of cleaning, but still, I’d rather skip the whole thing.

I like to live in my house. I’d prefer to take everybody out to a restaurant. Unlike my mother, I don’t have a formal living and dining room, so our whole routine gets interrupted for .

My one girlfriend (Jewish) hires a special cleaning company to do her house. She quit doing it herself when her kids were small.

How is your life today?

Taking a rest and having a beer while the lamb marinates. All the root vegetables are chopped, spices arranged, and it all starts assembling as stew in the stock pot starting in about 10 minutes.

Will start on the lentil curry while the stew simmers. If the foodies want pictures of the final product I will take a few snaps.

So this is a thing in Austin now.

Snoop Dogg poses with DPS trooper for photo at SXSW event, officer is reprimanded and referred for counseling.

I just cant help but think if it had been Willie the officer posed with, there would not have been the same issue.

Clevenger said the Gilmer-based trooper was called to Austin two weeks ago to help work during the music festival. Spears was in uniform with the distinctive Stetson in a secured area when the rap star and actor stopped and asked if he could get a quick photo with the trooper.

Clevenger said Snoop Dogg’s publicist took the picture.

Snoop Dogg posted the picture on Instagram, along with the line, “Me n my deputy dogg”

DPS officials saw the posting and cited Spears for deficiencies that require counseling for posing with a known criminal.

Calvin Broadus, aka Snoop Dogg, has been convicted several times of drug possession. In 1993, he faced a murder charge when his bodyguard shot and killed a rival gang member. Snoop Dogg and the bodyguard eventually were acquitted of the charge.

Clevenger said that Spears, had no knowledge of drug convictions.

596 Blind Frog Belly White  Apr 3, 2015 11:00:26am

We barely celebrate Easter. Mostly we celebrate the pagan rebirth aspect, with the eggs and candies. Mostly just candies.

But, growing up, we’d dye about 3 dozen eggs (I’m the youngest of 6 kids, remember), and Easter morning, my Dad would hide most of them all over the downstairs rooms. He was devious about it. There were always lots of easy, obvious ones for the little kids, but then there were the ones he hoped we wouldn’t find, so he could impress us with his cleverness - like slitting the felt on the bottoms of lamps and putting one in there, or putting them in the hem of the curtain, then pushing it all the way to the middle, so checking the end wouldn’t do it.

The amazing thing to me was that he could remember all the places he’d hid them, as many as 30 eggs!

We kept figuring out his hiding places, so he had to get even more devious. This reached a zenith one year when he sliced an egg in half along the long axis, and placed the two halves in a decorative box we all KNEW was too shallow to hold an egg!

The mainstream media has cited such statements as signs Bush “intends to position himself on economic issues like income inequality in a way that diverges from the approach traditionally championed by the Republican Party.”

But this week, Jeb Bush’s team brought on economist Glenn Hubbard — the lead architect of President George W. Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy. Hubbard also crafted Mitt Romney’s economic plan, which involved de-regulating Wall Street, further slashing taxes on corporations and the wealthy and turn Medicaid into a block grant program in which states could “experiment” with health funding for the poor. He claimed the plan would create 12 million jobs in Romney’s first term alone.

He could go on tour with Hucklebeeberry on bass and do their whole campaign to crappy Nugent lyrics and tunes.

I wonder if any of the other GOPers can play the drums. I bet Rand Paul thinks he can.

Doubt it. Drumming takes serious work and discipline; I can’t think of a single one who could hack it.

Good for her. Now if she’d just get some good material for her next session… Maybe cover some Halestorm? ;)

That is how I feel. I have never registered with either party since day one. I have voted for sane republicans just as I have voted for sane democrats, and a couple independents (You’re welcome Ross Perot, even though you were a little insane on some things. We are hearing that giant sucking sound you spoke of).

I’m going to try and catch them this summer. They play around PA a lot, them being from PA and all. Couldn’t get down to Pittsburgh the last time they were there, and missed them in Youngstown a little after that. I am going to make a show damnit.
