The Munchkin threw up a little while ago. He’s had a cough since he came back from school Friday, so I’ve had an interesting night, with company and all, too.

I hate seeing kids sick. If he’s not better by tomorrow, it’s the dr for him. And hope it’s nothing catching. He was very active until about 8:30 last night then bed and that seems to be when he fell asleep and was talking in his sleep, sort of scared me but he didn’t have a fever. I hope it’s not catching. Since being in school, he seems to have caught something 3x this year, though, and he was never sick before that.

Also recommended by Vimeo’s staff is Tony Zhou’s latest essay, this one on Orson Welles’ use of storytelling in F is for Fake:

He makes some very good points, and I find so often that I lose interest in documentaries half way through, and I think many documentaries would be better to follow Welles’ formula.

Zhou also had a good one a few months back, looking at Jackie Chan and why his own Hong Kong movies are better than his American made ones (often by American producers):

So many American blockbusters these days use camera tricks to make action look like action rather than actually having real action.

So many American blockbusters these days use camera tricks to make action look like action rather than actually having real action.

Chan’s recent work has been limited by his aging. Older Jackie can’t do the same shit younger Jackie could, partly because of the shit younger Jackie did.

But your comments ring true. HK action choreography (other than wuxia stuff) seems more real than Hollywood action stunts. Different target audiences.

The difference in the one that works for you is that the URL uses the Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure form. One doesn’t have to use them for Vimeo URLs but the comment posting software uses the unsecure protocol, which your Great Wall bots can check.

There was a number of ‘Reclaim Australia’ rallies in cities around the country today and by the looks of it, was every bit as reactionary and stupid as you’d think.
If I was aware of it I’d likely have gone to the counter-protest but I imagine it was largely spread on FB, a service I am understandably loathe to join.

Danny Nalliah from the Rise Up Australia Party addressed the rally in Melbourne and said he was “not against Muslim people, but … opposed to the teachings of Islam”.

“Likewise, we oppose Islam but we love the Muslim people.”

This theme of “rising up” is ubiquitous in fascist and protofascist discourse. That’s why one of the more useful defs of fascism is palingenetic ultranationalism: the palingenetic part is about “rebirth” of the “nation”, and this of course entails it “waking up”. The Gates of Vienna fascists also have this “Holger Danske is stirring” banner:

For our Anglophone readers: the caption says, “Holger Danske is stirring.”

When he manages to get that other eye open, everyone would be well-advised to take cover…

A not so subtle reference to what will happen when the “nation” “wakes up”.

Well, I’m not trusting the sources (mainly pro-Russian) that say the Saudis have been planning and are ready to launch one immediately.

But it could ultimately come down to that, more probably with a multi-nation task force, though, such as that used in other areas of the ME, if the fighting continues.

Technically. Of course, there are nuances.

However, the government only recognizes six official religions (Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism).[4][5][6] Although based on data collected by the Indonesian Conference on Religion and Peace (ICRP), there are about 245 non-official religions in Indonesia.[7] Indonesian law requires that every Indonesian citizen hold an identity card that identifies that person with one of these six religions, although citizens may be able to leave that section blank.[8] Indonesia does not recognize agnosticism or atheism, and blasphemy is illegal.

I know that democracy can be differently defined, but personally I don’t consider mere ochlocracy (with or without orderly elections) to be a real democracy in the truest sense of the word. For me, the real democracy = majority rules, minority rights. Insofar Indonesia denies such rights, I do not consider it a full-blown democracy. Now, democracy is not a yes/no proposition but rather a continuum, of course it’s still better and more democratic than, say, Saudi Arabia. But that’s that.

KIEV - The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry intends to ban entry to Balkan singer and composer Goran Bregovic following his recent visit to Crimea, a ministry spokesman said on Wednesday.

[…]

Bregovic said he did not care if any Ukrainian sanctions would follow his visit to Crimea.

“The Balkan people have always felt Russia’s grandeur,” Bregovic said. “I think the West has always been a little paranoid about this. I hope they will eventually get over it.”

Another example of (what I consider to be) a talented artist being a complete asshole.

So, totally bored…I put on Meat The Press and Chuckles Todd had Booby JIndal on regarding the Protection of Religion crap…and I don’t recall how many times the word “participate” was used by both Chuck and Booby…but I know I cringed each and every time.

I guess I was waiting for Chuck Todd to run with that word and ask Jindal to define it in this case of not providing a service. How is a service provider a participant in a ceremony.

I guess I’ll be waiting for a long time.

Can we have some intelligent media again sometime…soon hopefully?

You idiot politicians can say all the stupid crap you want, and you Tea Partiers can moan about wanting your country back, but dammit do not mess with the language, the words. They mean what they mean.

A participant is inherent to the event. A service provide is separate from the event. I think they are considered paid servants. Go ahead and say you don’t want to serve gays or whatever. Don’t try to use a word that means you are personally involved with the ceremony. You wouldn’t even be there if you weren’t hired.

Remember that Christ stood for greed and power along with hate and discrimination. He also hung out with the rich, famous and powerful. He wore designer clothes and drove a hot chariot, had servants and ate well. Married 3 or 4 times, and had prenups in place. Had a popular speaking arrangement contract that enabled him to demonize whoever the money behind him targeted. Charged large. Kicked the poor to the curb and told his followers they couldn’t afford to tend for the weak and ill. War was necessary to defend the Kingdom and those people “over there” were bad. Said we were all Gods Children, except for “Him, him and her, and that guy in pink, and that couple in the doorway”.
At his death he spoke “Fuck ‘em all….I got mine”….
Have a very Happy Easter regardless of the voices of ignorance saying they speak for….

Yeah, they still like to believe that the Green Revolution would have toppled the Mullahs and brought “regime change,” if only the President had thrown his support behind them. But since the Army and Revolutionary Guard were ambivalent and resistant to the “revolution” respectively, the idea that throwing US support overtly or covertly behind it would have led to the fall of the government is laughable. Odds are they still would have been crushed, but the loss of life would have been greater, further “revolutions” discredited as little more than US-paid puppets looking to remove the government, and any thought of a negotiations would have gone out the window.

I think the upside is that the more reactionary they become, the more isolated they become. Jeb has already started walking back his BS about the initial version of the Indiana law, Georgia and Nevada both tabled their own “religious freedom” bills while Arkansas’ governor forced a revision, and Rand Paul (champion of individual freedom) has been utterly silent on the matter.

Going into the primaries, there will be pressure to sign onto this “religious freedom” BS, to argue that business owners should be allowed to practice their own little version of Jim Crow when it comes to gay customers. And any Republican who signs on will be DOA in the general election. The era of gay-baiting is fast ending and the GOP simply has no way of adapting that won’t reduce it to a regional party.

He’s such a selective douchebag. Anyone who believes this guy actually gives a crap about individual rights for anyone who isn’t a heterosexual Christian male is deluding themselves.

From the morons who cry racism when you call them on their racism.

The intellectual complexity of a 10 year old child.

What really grates me and honestly makes me angry knowing the Nazi discrimination against LGBT people is when conservatives try to claim that these anti-discriminatory measures are what the Nazis would do and that they will lead to concentration camps,. No one wants to be on the same side as the Nazis I get it but at the same time, anti-gay right wingers need to realize that the views of Hitler on gay people has a lot more intersection with them than they want to admit.

We went on an outing to Modi’in Forest. Nice park, places for the kids to play, benches to sit and relax. No Wi-Fi though.

On the way home we drove past the Prime Minister’s Residence, which is only a couple of blocks away from where my daughter lives. My son-in-law pointed out the building, which is surrounded by barricades and guards, and said “I was there once, it’s a garbage house, nothing special at all and a crap garden.”

Of course not, these “religious rights” are based on “deeply held beliefs”…

As a person who has little time for or love of religion, what these reactionary asshats are doing is creating the atmosphere where less and less people will come to religion; fewer and fewer will attend church or even follow religion at all. A generation or two down the road with a healthy dose of the likes of Bryan Fisher, Pat Robertson, et al, and there will be next to no young people who will want anything to do with it.

And as this progresses, the religious right will become more and more unhinged…which will do nothing but hasten the end.

They really do see liberty and freedom as forcing people do to things their way. It’s like when they bemoan the USSC decision banning forced prayer. The decision doesn’t ban prayer in schools at all and they know this but they spread the lie that the Supreme Court banned prayer in school when in reality, it banned forced prayer.

Because of this, I have prayed every single time I have been in a school building since my youngest was in kindergarten, 26 years ago. I love to be able to tell a wingnut that no one has ever tried to stop me. Then I ask them when the last time they prayed in a school was.
