Columbia Journalism School Review Finds “Major Failures” in Rolling Stone’s UVA Rape Story

All she had to do was call
Media • Views: 29,931

As we noted last December, Rolling Stone asked the Columbia Journalism School to do a complete independent review of their disastrous story about rape at the University of Virginia; tonight that report has been released, and it’s pretty damning: Major ‘Failures’ Found in Rolling Stone’s ‘A Rape on Campus.’

An institutional failure at Rolling Stone resulted in a deeply flawed article about a purported gang rape at the University of Virginia, according to an outside review by Columbia Journalism School professors.

The review, published Sunday night, says the failures were sweeping — they “encompassed reporting, editing, editorial supervision and fact-checking — and “may have spread the idea that many women invent rape allegations.”

And it all could have been avoided if the writer, Sabrina Rubin Erdely, had contacted more sources.

In short: all she had to do was call.

“The editors invested Rolling Stone’s reputation in a single source,” Columbia’s 12,866-word report concludes.

The author, Sabrina Rubin Erdely, has released an abject apology for the piece; obviously, she’s painfully aware that she may have given ammunition to the right wingers and men’s rights activists who reflexively claim all rape stories are made up:

Rolling Stone has published the full report here: Rolling Stone and UVA: The Columbia School of Journalism Report.

11 Justanotherhuman  Apr 5, 2015 5:39:19pm

Even if you, the reporter, are an actual eye witness, a single source is never enough.

Erdely, an experienced reporter, really should have known better. You leave yourself open to being conned, just for starters.

We’ll probably never know the truth.

We should note that the police investigation did not find that the whole story was made up; they said something probably did happen, but they couldn’t confirm it went down like the RS story reported it.

Eventually Jackie Coakley may come forward and tell her story. I don’t blame her for wanting to stay away from the media piranhas right now, though.

In any event it’s really her editors who should probably be fired. They’re the one’s paid to review & vet submissions, exercise judgement and restraint, make sure material to be published adheres to standard practices, and act in the institution’s best interests as its firewall against exactly this sort of sloppy journalism.

39 Justanotherhuman  Apr 5, 2015 6:00:48pm

re: #13 Charles Johnson

I agree with that and the police actually said something “terrible” had probably happened to her. But this wasn’t the usual fact-filled, straight reportage of a rape. This was fleshed out from the “single source” and filled in, not with actual witnesses to a crime, but advocates of rape prevention on campus, acquaintances of hers, and others appalled by the story of what Jackie alleged happened. I’m not going to say Jackie lied, I’m just saying that Erdely herself could have done a much better, less amateurish investigation, if she had not written the story, as she intended, simply from the POV of the victim. This, IMHO, was the fatal flaw in the entire story.

Furthermore, it appalls me that these kinds of horrendous criminal activities involving students are handled almost exclusively by the colleges, who have a lot to lose, rather than by local law enforcement, and I think that is to the detriment of the victims.

re: #34 Charles Johnson

Malicious behavior, though, gets me breathing fire.

And that’s the difference between CCJ and the Reporter’s actions regarding this story:

- The reporter got sloppy and eventually got caught but she offered a formal apology and appears remorseful and willing to accept the consequences of her actions. The editors are also at fault for not properly verifying/fact checking the story.

- Chuck just went full on asshole mode, doxxed a woman he claimed was “Jackie” without any verification whatsoever. He didn’t do ANY of the things an actual ethical journalist would do AND he has no regrets whatsoever for any of his actions no matter how damaging or malicious they are.

This is one of many reasons why Chuck, despite what he believes of himself, will never be an actual legitimate journalist. You see, no editor in his (or her) right fucking mind would put up with CCJ’s antics for very long. So he’s relegated to being his own editor and ruining people’s lives on his shitty little blog. There’s a good reason why, in the traditional editorial structure, the editor and journalist on a story should NOT be the same person. Perspective is important. One set of eyes only is seldom the best choice on a story.

The scoop in journalism has become a huge money maker (killer of all things good)

They hear the story, they BELIEVE it without the basic journalistic strategy of confirming the source.

I’ll never forget the time I learned of the term “the get” it’s all about the mouthpiece getting the money maker, being it Barbara Walters, Katie Couric et al. They want the GET. They give a shit about the story.

Not that it matters. Either one would be a wonderful pretext for Chuckie to catch a beating. I never watch boxing or any type of fighting competitions, but I would pay a premium to be able to watch and record it.

Well, I recall getting roundly downdinged for noting that the Washington Post had had some misgivings about the story. And later, for asserting that it was clear the case had collapsed.

There’s some stories that are just such a perfect fit for what people already believe.

It is not nearly as easy to know, right away, the truth of claims of outrageous wrongdoing, as it seems. People of all political persuasions fall into the trap, but the bait differs. The Jew did it. The Black did it. The rich white fratboys did it.

And to complicate things more, sometimes that’s exactly what happened. That’s why we have courts. That’s why we gather evidence, cross check who said what and how it stacks up to the forensic evidence, and maintain a guarded reserve while the evidence rolls in. If we have the patience. Not that I’ve been the model of patience, guarded reserve, etc. It’s not always easy to do what’s right, even when in the back of your mind you kind of sort of know.

A bully wanna be who is thwarted by his inability to intimidate.

I’d ignore him, but frankly I think he is dangerous. And honestly, he’s amusing in a perverse way. Try living here your whole life, though this kind of lunacy has really only reared its ugly head over the past decade or two (and moreso since Bredesen left the governor’s mansion a few years ago), as the TN GOP has taken over the executive and legislative branches (and work to sink their claws into the judiciary).

You know as well as I do that the TN Democratic Party, while pretty dominant in the large urban areas such as here in Nashville and in Memphis, is outmanned and outgunned in the exurbs (such as Franklin/Williamson County, one of the wealthiest areas in the country) and rural areas. This gives the TN GOP the numerical advantage statewide, which is why we currently have Haslam in the governor’s mansion right now and a state legislature where the Dems can offer no more than token resistance.

Oliver didn’t pull any punches. “How many of those documents have you actually read?” he asked Snowden with a palpable air of skepticism. “I do understand what I turned over,” the ex-CIA systems admin mumbled.

Not good enough. “There’s a difference between understanding what’s in the documents and reading what’s in the documents… because when you’re handing over thousands of NSA documents the last thing you’d want to do is read them,” Oliver said.

He continued, “So the New York Times took a slide, didn’t redact it properly, and in the end it was possible for people to see that something was being used in Mosul on al Qaeda.”

“That is a problem,” Snowden replied.

“Well, that’s a fuckup,” said Oliver.

“It is a fuckup, and those things do happen in reporting. In journalism, we have to accept that some mistakes will be made. This is a fundamental concept of liberty,” Snowden said.

“Right. But you have to own that then,” grilled Oliver. “You’re giving documents with information you know could be harmful, which could get out there.”

Snowden is stunned to near-silence, not expecting such a contentious line of questioning from the bespectacled late-night host.

Well, I’ve renewed my vehicle registration on-line (only 2 bucks extra, worth it to avoid the clerks office), dinner dishes are put away, email and stuff is caught up on, my work here is done.

Trying to pick a web hosting company. I DON’T want to have to start writing code or doing this one from scratch, it’s just going to be a personal site, a little blogging perhaps, post some photos, maybe some technical articles about stuff I know.

Been looking at Wix (I’ve worked on some of their stuff before, like the builder and most of the features, but not crazy about having to pay 5 bucks a month extra for each email acct.)

GoDaddy is an option, I’ve used them in the past, and well, they are better than some out there.

Gatorhosting looks attractive also.

Any recommendations. I’m not looking to code and design, looking for something that will do a drag-drop site builder type app with plenty of templates to play with.

RBS

I’ve been using Planet Earth Hosting pehosting.com since 2006. I have never had any serious problems with their service.

Saw Lucinda Williams at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano a few months ago. Excellent show though it left me wishing she ‘d doen some of her earlier material.

The Coach House is a great small venue and they have some excellent artists. Ticket prices range from $25 to $55, with a two drink minimum. Highly recommended if you’re within a drive of San Juan.

“How many of those documents have you actually read?” Oliver asked Snowden. “I do understand what I turned over,” — Snowden. And it gets better.

Nice to know that “dick pics” are more important than national security, also.

If any Lizards ever visit the Czech Republic around Easter time and see young men carrying reed whips………don’t be surprised.

Easter brings out the strange in many cultures. The Philippines has realistic crucifixions, while parts of Spain have hooded processions that resemble a creepy meeting of a secret society.

The Czech Republic is no slouch in this area. In the eastern part of the country, Moravia, it has long been the tradition for men to whip or spank the backsides of women with woven pussy willow branches on Easter Monday. The whip, used only this one day of the year, is called a pomlázka. Easter Monday is called Crvené pondělí, meaning Red Monday.

“I don’t mind. It is for health. It is to ensure you have a healthy baby,” Nikola, a young woman who grew up near the city of Olomouc, told the Prague Post. It also ensures the woman will have another year of youth and beauty, some say.

Here in the Czech Republic, Easter is decidedly…….kinky.

That is real hubris.

It used to be a fundamental law in newsrooms that every fact, name, source, quote or number was checked at least twice. If there was only one, unnamed source, then there had to be corroborating information that made that source credible. Running a story with only one source is a recipe for disaster.

Sadly, you’re probably right, but — except for a very few superstars (and for publishers) — journalism is not a career leading to great wealth. It was supposed to be a kind of public service, or calling, much as teaching, nursing or police work were supposed to be.

Besides, regardless of the students’ motivations, their editors are supposed to be doing their jobs, too, which is to make sure the reporters don’t fuck up and disgrace the paper or magazine. Offhand, I can think of several news outlets that have been disgraced big time when they ran with a story that turned out to be fabricated, either by sources or by the reporter him- or herself.

I agree. But they also see the “stars” of journalism who are making the big bucks and think that one big story will make their careers, not doing the real work it takes to become a credible, solid reporter over time, actually practicing their craft. And they also see people who are connected (Luke Russert comes to mind) who cut the queue. It has to be frustrating these days to be a principled, plodding reporter, paying their dues, who gets the job done for an average paycheck and no glory.

But we’re no longer producing Edward R Murrows, just wannabees.

“I am NOT saying that the climate action movement is broadly analogous to the marriage equality movement. The harm that climate inaction will bring to billions in the future is just too different from the extensive past and present discrimination and harm gays suffer. But one key similarity is the moral nature of the cause.

“Once third-rail issues transform into moral imperatives, impossibilities sometimes surrender to new realities,” as Salon explained in a 2013 piece on the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Indeed Salon explained in a late 2011 article that what “moved gay marriage into the mainstream in 2011″ was “morality.”

“The LGBT community did not win by asking by asking for “tolerance.” They weren’t trying to get folks to “accept gay marriage by holding their moral noses.” No: “the lesson that the gay revolution holds for any progressive movement” is that “they set out to change change people’s minds about what is moral.” More

I’m beginning to think we won’t see climate change taken seriously by a majority of Americans until we start losing a city to the sea. Even with the worst droughts on record, tornadoes tearing up whole towns, snow storms crushing roofs under record levels of snow, and monstrously huge South Pacific typhoons, people still want to believe that this is just a “normal” thing. The whole “cycles” bit has been pushed so hard that the public doesn’t even question it anymore.

From year to year, if people are not directly impacted by a severe climate event, they tend to acclimatise themselves to the changing norm. Even if you get a fucking firestorm blow through an area, people attribute it to freak weather conditions and the fact that accumulated leaf litter means we ‘we’re about due for one’.
It’s much easier to ignore the stats if you just adapt. Doubly ironic since it’s a species greatest advantage.

The city lost to the sea will be treated as a just punishment along the Sodom/Gomorrah lines, and the right wingers will still ignore the damage done.

What they will also ignore is the desertification of the Southwest and California in particular, even though California is a major agricultural producer for the world. Heck, much of the Central US would be under pressure to identify and locate water sources as weather patterns shift towards a drier and warmer climate. That too will affect where/how people can live - and we may see CA style restrictions put in place all across the Southwest as water supplies are overtaxed (particularly the Colorado River).

Good morning Lizards from a partly cloudy Philadelphia. 43 F this morning, but expected to be sunny and over 70 F by this afternoon.

Cooking exercises went well over the weekend. The lamb stew came out well and has been providing additional meals since Friday. The first try at red lentil curry was tasty, but still needs a few tweaks. And sour cream apple pie went over well with the guests on Friday.

The Sunday pie (apple with brandy-soaked cranberries*) came out first-class. That variant will be repeated in the future.

* - Pie recipe I use includes using some lemon juice and lemon zest in the filling. Variant is to macerate a cup of dried cranberries with the lemon and a tablespoon of brandy or cognac and then mix that into the filling as well. (I diced up my cranberries a little beforehand as well. Learned that from putting dried cherries in something and seeing the results of *not* chopping up the dried fruit a little bit in advance.)

How are things with the Lizards in the windward approaches?

re: #271 Justanotherhuman

The issue of service of process via Facebook is becoming more accepted though some courts still do not recognize it.

Where there are some reasons not to accept service of process via Facebook, because of the reliability of being able to identify the person for service (there are still bogus/fake accounts, even though Facebook generally requires a legitimate person set up an account), courts in NY have begun allowing it because it was the only way that some petitioners were able to identify and locate the respondent.

CPLR 308(5) allows service of process by alternative means when other methods have been unsuccessful/impractical. In other words, the law gives the courts flexibility to allow it as a method for service of process.

Those fans were rioting because their team lost. A couple years ago, VCU fans rioted in Richmond, after VCU’s Final Four lost, and threw loose pavement bricks at cops. All the cops did was deploy smoke grenades to disperse the crowd.

Sports riots in the US happen with alarming regularity, and the treatment of those who are involved in damaging property is frequently less severe than those who were doing nothing wrong (see the peaceful protesters in Ferguson).

The nitwit on Twitter doesn’t seem to get that Ferguson protests were mostly peaceful (and seems to fixate on that cops didn’t shoot and kill any of the protesters). They ignore the illegal detainment of protesters who did nothing wrong, detaining journalists who were doing nothing wrong, targeting protesters via sniper rifle in an effort to intimidate. Etc.

The policing in Ferguson was far more harsh than anything seen at sports riots.

The thing about the UK fans is that they would have done the same thing if the team had won.
Lexington, KY, may be the only city that consistently bans sofas in the street on game days because sofas are historically what gets set on fire.
In recent years, the bad behavior keeps escalating. Everyone knows it’s going to happen and I’ve come to the conclusion that local authorities just let it happen, making half-hearted efforts to arrest those caught in the act of damaging property.
It’s really pathetic that it’s allowed to continue, and even more shameful that it’s excused.

Reading Dark’s comment triggered a thought about the little red-headed dude I hate to mention.

Over the time he has been followed he seems to make anyone and everyone a target if he thinks he can make a dollar off it.

I do not think he cares about gender, sexual orientation, political affiliation, race, religion…anything. All people are to him is a way to advance himself monetarily.

I seriously doubt he has real friends. How could anyone trust him?

Chuck is going to find himself a very lonely human one day, if not already today. Maybe that is why he is the way he is. He has no real human traits such as warmth, empathy, concern and the like.

I have a feeling his background and upbringing have some bad elements. How else is a human like him created?

And then you have the comments about Snowden.

Are Chuck and Snowden similar? Are they an indication of others like them becoming some kind of a personality/character trait brought on by the world such as it is today? Seems to be some kind of strange disconnect from the real human race starting.

If you think the F-35 has problems, check out the issues Russia is having with its T-50 5th Gen. fighter:

For more than a year, the Indian Business Standard newspaper has reported on New Delhi’s misgivings. The Indian version of the T-50 is known as the FGFA.

“The FGFA’s current AL-41F1 engines were underpowered, the Russians were reluctant to share critical design information, and the fighter would eventually cost too much,” the paper reported, based on briefings from Indian Air Force officials in December 2013.

A month later, more bad news leaked to the press. India wanted a bigger share of the project. But the engine was still bad, it still cost too much, the plane’s radar was “inadequate” and its “stealth features badly engineered.”

Then in June, a T-50 landed at the Zhukovsky testing grounds near Moscow … and its engine caught fire. Russian officials said the damage was minor —𠂫ut photographs depicted much of the rear fuselage blackened by the blaze.

“What added to the controversy … was Russia’s refusal to share any details of this failure, to the extent that a technical evaluation team of the Indian Air Force that reportedly was present at the site was refused access to inspect the damaged platform,” Monika Chansoria of the Center for Land Warfare Studies in New Delhi told Defense News.

Russia can’t afford to do the project; they’ve cut the number of planes from 50 to 12, which is to say that they’re more like a technology demonstrator than a capable air wing. The Russian recession and lack of money means that they can’t do what they want to do; the Indian govt is pissed bc they’ve sunk billions on their share of the project. And they’re letting everyone know that the Russians are incapable of getting the project straightened out.

That means to watch for the Indian government to look at alternatives or to kill the project outright to cut their losses. But they need something to show for it.

The scale of the Russian/Indian mess with the T-50 is a fraction of the costs and problems with the F22/F35s. We’re talking $30-50 billion project versus a trillion dollar project. And it’s not like the US has the money either.

At least the F-35’s fire extinguishers work. There has been an F-35 engine fire, but that Lightning II suffered far less damage than the burned T-50 did because its fire extinguishers contained and limited the damage.

In the uS case, The problem with the F-35’s engine has been ID’d and Pratt & Whitney has been required to correct it, at their own cost. This beats the Russian situation, where the cause is not being revealed. Moreover, there are far more F-35s currently than T-50s, so the fact that the T-50 has already had an engine fire with only the 5th prototype speaks very badly of it.

Which sort of ignores the reality that the F-35 is a program that is nearly 20 years old and yet still remains in the pre-production stage because of problems like these. Engines burning up, fuel systems running too hot, “data fusion” still not near to being achieved, internal refits to accommodate worthwhile internal payloads, software lagging years behind, and weight issues that keep cropping up are just the tip of the iceberg. If the T-50’s production run being cut from 50 to 12 is anything, it’s yet more evidence that the F-35 program is a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist.

Obama has written one executive order after another replacing existing US Law. His new “ObamaLaws” aren’t really legal but, with the Dems and Repubs going along with them—or at best not trying to stop them—they become de facto laws by default. Dictator-in-Chief Obama’s latest tactic is not to even write the laws don but, the simply speak them into existence as might a Pharaoh…or an Imam. This is what he and his lackey team have done with the treasonous anti-Israel/anti-USA Iran deal. In making this lunatic and suicidal-for-the-US “deal” with Iran, what Obama has effectively done is say to Iran “I now submit my country to your commands and to Islam.” North American Islamic Republic anyone? This is and has been Obama’s intent all along. He plans—as Van Jones once told a group of high school students—to be President of the World. He is on his way.

Sometimes fear of law enforcement can cause a bad result even when the police do nothing wrong:

New York City teen dies after falling from building to escape police

A 17-year-old boy died on Saturday from injuries he sustained falling six stories from a New York City building rooftop as he tried to escape police investigating a report of teenagers smoking marijuana, law enforcement said.

Hakeem Kuta, of the Bronx, died Saturday morning after being in critical condition for nearly two days, police said.

Kuta fell from a roof ledge as he and a 14-year-old friend attempted to escape police, who repeatedly told the teens to stop and “relax,” a spokesman for the New York City Police Department said.

In a statement, police said four uniformed officers responded to a complaint on Thursday evening about a group of teenagers smoking marijuana in the lobby of a Bronx apartment building, police said.

Why 4 cops for a situation that might not even generate an arrest? Answer: It was an attempt to keep things in hand. Teenage boys are prone to stupid acts of defiance, and they might have engaged in such acts if only 1 or 2 cops showed up. 4 officers ensured no defiance, but instead caused the boys to panic with fatal results for one of them.

No villains here, just a young man who died because he panicked. Very sad.

Just another example of the RW supporting the haves over the have-nots, IMHO.

And of course the DLs also support the evangelical efforts of missionaries requiring the poors in countries they operate to accept their version of religion and convert, if and when they actually offer any aid.

This is the way GG is framing the Oliver interview of Snowden—Americans are all a bunch of dumb asses who care nothing for politics or “what’s happening” to them by their govt. Never mind the shocking revelation Oliver managed to glean from Snowden, that he really has no idea of what detail is in the documents, just that we’re supposed to believe him that he “vetted” enough to make the claims that he, GG and Poitras (among others) have made, and which created new careers for them.

[Embedded content]

So says the guy who claims Brazil for his home.

A 2010 findlaw.com poll found that almost 2/3 of Americans - 65% - were incapable of naming even a single member of the U.S. Supreme Court. A 2010 Pew poll discovered that 41% of Americans are unable to name the current Vice President of the U.S; in other words, Oliver could just as easily (if not more easily) compile a video of Times Square visitors looking stumped when asked if they knew who Joe Biden, or Antonin Scalia, is.

Of course Greenwald thinks this is about political disengagement…and not the fact that many people simply don’t give a fuck about much of anything. How many people couldn’t place Iraq on a map? How many couldn’t point to Ohio?

I wonder how many Americans know more about Kim Kardashian and Tom Brady than Joe Biden. I am betting a far greater number.

So, the entire UVA story is such an interweb shitshow at this point, but has it been addressed anywhere as why “Jackie” pursued this facade? Is she on record anywhere other than RS?

Not to my knowledge. It’s hard to get into anyone’s head. Initially I gave Jackie the benefit of doubt, like I did with Brian Williams. Memory is extremely malleable (which is why no verdict should rest on a single unverified testimony, no exceptions), and traumatized memory doubly so. But after it turned out that she was a serial liar, the hypothesis that she made it all up from the start (the start being her calls to the friends) became at least as probable as that some unspecified incident did happen (whether of sexual nature or not) and got distorted in her memory. We will probably never learn, what it was.

Our lives have been a lie. From brownie batters to chocolate chip cookie dough we’ve been subjected to a wagging finger followed by a “don’t eat that you’ll get sick!” Well, it turns out that good ol’ Mom might have been keeping us away from this sweet stuff for no reason at all since it’s actually really hard to get salmonella from eggs.

We all know that the best part of making cookies is sneaking a taste of that sweet raw cookie dough and no one knows that better than Slate assistant editor L.V. Anderson. At the age of 27 she’s roughly consumed 360 raw eggs in her 15 years of baking and has never gotten sick. Anderson looked into the research behind salmonella and found that salmonella in eggs is rare to begin with.

Back in the 1980’s a salmonella outbreak in the US got hundreds of Americans sick and killed a few dozen. Because this was an egg-associated outbreak measures were put in place to ensure hens avoided infection. Just because a hen has salmonella doesn’t mean she’ll lay infected eggs though. Since new protocols were put in place it’s estimated that 0.012 percent of eggs would be contaminated with salmonella and even THAT doesn’t mean that you’ll get sick.

Thera (Santorini) is composed entirely of volcanic tuff. The giant caldera in the middle is from the gigantic explosion in ~1650 B.C. that devastated nearby Crete and made the Minoan civilization vulnerable to conquest by the Mycenaean Greeks. The hairsplitting debate over whether Karen Santorum had an abortion only serves to expose the ridiculousness of Rick Santorum’s extremism. In his view, it’s absolutely not okay for a woman to have doctors remove her life-threatening pregnancy for her, but it is okay for a woman to deliver a fetus well before viability so that the child can die slowly, in open air, as the Good Lord intended? Or is it just not okay for everyone who doesn’t happen to be Rick Santorum’s wife?

I first read about the Thera eruption years and years and years ago…..the book I’d read it in was published some time in the late 1950s, and even then, it was being speculated that the 1650 B.C. eruption was what led to the Atlantis legend.

I first read about the Thera eruption years and years and years ago…..the book I’d read it in was published some time in the late 1950s, and even then, it was being speculated that the 1650 B.C. eruption was what led to the Atlantis legend.

That was always one of my favorite slightly unorthodox theories. Now that we know the eruption was about 1650 instead of 1450, it doesn’t look quite as good, but I’m still fond of it.

There’s no need to “worry” that this incident might “spread the idea that some women invent false rape allegations” because, simply put, some do.

This isn’t an “all or nothing” thing. It happens, it is known fact that it does happen, and it has incredibly serious consequences for the victims — the real victims — when it does.

Being concerned about those victims, and what false allegations do to them and their lives, is perfectly legitimate. It also does not necessitate any sort of strawman belief that all rape stories are false. But after Duke Lacross, UVA, and a number of other major incidents, a person would have to be mind-bogglingly dishonest to pretend like this isn’t a thing that happens.

I think this comment misses the point completely, while distorting it.

It’s not about whether false rape accusations happen. Of course they do. Cases such as this one remind us that although every rape claim should be taken seriously, they’re but a starting point for an investigation and that one can’t assign blame merely on say-so.

The point about those who “may have spread the idea that many women invent rape allegations” is still valid, because many wingnuts (MRAs like Chuck Johnson) simply assume that most reports are false. This adds fuel to their fire.

Notably, “many” becomes “some” in your rendering. I wonder why that is.

Mainly because extrapolating from one to “many” edges very close to, as I said, treating it like an “all or nothing” phenomenon. That there are some nutbars out there who claim that most or all allegations are false does not diminish the severity of the cases that do occur, yet it is frequently argued in that fashion: to show any concern for victims of this sort of fraud is to be an MRA.

Yes, the primary issue here is bad journalism. But there is a very real secondary issue, which most seem to be ignoring, which is just how much of a witch hunt gets stirred up by this sort of thing when it does happen.

It’s been described in the initial few comments as “an honest mistake”, and I am left to wonder how much damage “an honest mistake” has to do to people before it becomes worthy of repercussions beyond having to say “whoops, my bad”.

624 Nyet  Apr 6, 2015 1:09:07pm

re: #623 GunstarGreen

While I agree that it’s more than a mere “honest mistake” and that there should be more repercussions than a slap on the wrist for playing with people’s lives (both of the alleged victim and of the accused) like Erdely and her editors did, you still did write “some” where the word used was actually “many”, and the difference is crucial. Nobody denies that “some” people make false rape allegations (no one knows - or can know - how many), so presenting it as if that is what was said and then debunking it (“look, the sky is blue!”) doesn’t look all that honest, sorry.

MRAs don’t simply claim that “some” women do it.
