John Oliver’s Must-See Interview With Edward Snowden

Oliver to Snowden: “You have to own that”
US News • Views: 24,403

YouTube

John Oliver might be the first interviewer who has ever asked Edward Snowden some hard questions about what he did. In this Last Week Tonight clip, Oliver presses Snowden relentlessly on why he stole and released so many secret documents without ever reading them — and Snowden doesn’t come off well at all. And Oliver does this while still addressing our very real concerns about privacy and surveillance, a balancing act no one else has managed to achieve.

It’s sad that we’ve reached a state where comedians do a better job of real journalism than most journalists, who’ve acted more as sycophantic enablers of Snowden’s actions than anything else.

Sorta a “court joker” role. He’s not “serious” so he can do something serious.

What headline is GG talking about?

5 Dark_Falcon  Apr 6, 2015 11:30:27am

My guess would be that Snowden’s minders underestimated John Oliver. They thought because his show is classed as a comedy show he was looking to do a ‘funny, powder puff’ type of interview.

Again, that’s only a guess.

Edward Snowden admits to John Oliver: I didn’t read all of leaked NSA material

In the interview, the British comedian asked Snowden: “How many of those documents have you actually read?”

Snowden replied: “I’ve evaluated all the documents that are in the archive.”

Oliver then pressed the whistleblower further, arguing that to “evaluate” did not mean that he had read them all.

8 Drive By Commenter  Apr 6, 2015 11:32:52am

The real comedians are on the 6 ‘O Clock News. And the Sunday “news” shows.

9 jaunte  Apr 6, 2015 11:33:07am
“How many of those documents have you actually read?” Oliver asked, referring to the estimated 200,000 NSA documents Snowden stole and turned over to journalists in Hong Kong.

“I have evaluated all of the documents in the archive,” Snowden replied.

“You’ve read every single one?”

“Well, I do understand what I turned over.”

“There’s a difference between understanding what’s in the documents and reading what’s in the documents,” Oliver countered.

“I understand the concern,” Snowden said.

“…The US government believes Snowden also took up to 1.5 million “tier 3” documents potentially detailing US capabilities and NSA offensive cyber operations. The whereabouts of that second cache documents remains unknown.

Snowden doesn’t talk about the second cache of documents anymore.”

Appears that he has admitted indiscriminate theft of state secrets, the content he didn’t even bother to read or understand before providing those state secrets to other nations. So how can anyone still call him a whistleblower and not a thief and traitor?

Completely OT, but I am excited, so.

It turns out Nightwish is on tour in the US this month, and I just realized it. And now I have tickets to see them. My first concert, even.

Shhhh, I’m slow at these things.

Journalists are afraid to ask hard questions these days, because that results in losing access in the future to the folks being interviewed. Makes it difficult to do their jobs if they can’t get access. Of course, access provides little advantage if they are afraid to ask hard questions.

Oliver and Stewart can get away with asking hard questions because their jobs don’t depend in having future access to the folks being interviewed. Sad state of affairs.

19 darthstar  Apr 6, 2015 11:45:40am

Don’t have time to watch the full video right now, but caught a few minutes of the Snowden interview. The guy can’t look straight forward and talk at the same time - what a crappy liar.

Okay, gotta run soon. Did get a response from one company about a possible phone interview today - though I suspect the person who emailed me doesn’t realize I don’t live in India (and his grammar sucks, but hey, if he’s just arranging a call for someone here, then I’m okay with it).

Of course, I also need to go down to the EDD and have some kind of Return to Work eligibility review - where some poor bastard gets to have me explain how I’m not looking for hourly labor, though I wouldn’t mind getting even 80% of my last salary.

I click on the post number and the full post shows up in a new tab. This is a big improvement over not showing at all on here and taking five or six tries to show in the new tab…until that quit working altogether.

37 Charles Johnson  Apr 6, 2015 12:06:57pm

To be more detailed about it - embedded tweets are rendered by Twitter’s Javascript code, which turns a blockquote tag with a special class into an IFRAME that contains the fully formatted and rendered tweet. When this Javascript runs in Firefox, Firefox doesn’t properly resize the area that was formerly a blockquote, to be the size of the rendered IFRAME.

Unfortunately there’s nothing I can do to fix it. (The problem never happens in Chrome or Safari.)

39 Thanos  Apr 6, 2015 12:07:34pm

One note about all this: Did you notice how Snowden caveated the Dick pic question? When pressed he described how your gmail could go to a data farm in the UK even if you weren’t corresponding with someone overseas . The misdirect is the word “could” — Google would have to have a perfect storm of circuit failures, routing issues, and MPLS ring failures in the U.S. here to even want to think about routing your Gmail to a data farm in the UK when there are at least five domestic centers closer. Think about the economics of the situation - routing anything out of country puts it on circuits that are many multiples of cost higher than domestic ones. Nobody designs or engineers for any data to go out of country unless there is a real need for that data to go over-border. Indeed, as I’ve pointed out before routing voice calls out of country and then back in can get you big fines because even if it is inadvertent you are avoiding LEC access fees.

Because that sort of complexity is where outrage goes to die. Most people don’t understand how the tech works which means a discussion about it leaves them on the outside looking in and thus takes the focus off of them and puts it on experts regarding whom the public tends to be uneasy.

I have been grasping for a metaphor for what the NSA should properly do, and I think of it like the store camera in a 7/11. To me, it’s “surveillance” when there, a bank of monitors with shadowy types watching it, live. But in fact, that’s not the way it is used. The store keeps the last x hours to use in the trial of the guy who killed the clerk for $123.95. If a certain store gets a lot of shoplifting, they will bring in a guy to catch the thief.

And the huge data collection is the same way. They don’t want to see your dick pic (officially), but some employees might make jokes at your dick’s expense. They could be disciplined for that, but there is no moral hazard you have been put in if some weird guy (or gal) at the NSA likes to look at it.

What the phone data is, and even Prism is, is a gigantic security camera. There is so much data that the NSA can only keep three days at a time in the life of the Internet. Then 30,000 or so go poking and searching around all that data and they put links in, and a copy of data they know is interesting over time. In other words, they shouldn’t make false promises. The terrorist still pops up, shoots people, and then is gunned down while the cell leader screams. But you can pick up, by watching data, that the guy who gave the order is x, and he’s just traveling to Y. You can’t save the 7/11 clerk from the idiot who shoots him. But you can ID him and put his sorry ass on trial.

But it was the white man who defeated Superman in World War II. Let me tell you something else, you push the white man only so far, you’re going to have a reaction like you’ve never seen.”

Don’t worry about. Reading comprehension isn’t his strong suit, but what even the tutor seems to ignore is that the SAT was originally a 400-1600 scale for decades, and they switched it to 600-2400 by adding an essay that did nothing to improve the test. So, they’re going back to the 400-1600 scale. They constantly tweak the exam, and this guy thinks his students should hold off on taking it until the College Board figures things out.

Except that isn’t practical advice to kids who are juniors/seniors in HS looking to get into college on schedule. They need to take the exam and can’t wait until the CB sorts things out.

Is the ACT a better indicator? Beats me. I didn’t take the ACT, only the SAT back in the day.

And I don’t brag about it now, nor did I know anyone who did brag about it - though the rumors of those who got perfect scores on either English/Math in HS were well known - and the ppl who did get those scores were truly brilliant (and have gone on to be quite successful AFAIK). Then again, the folks I went to HS with were quite well rounded, and weren’t just book-smart brilliant.
