One of the most disgusting right wing racists ever to plague Twitter with his presence, Todd Kincannon, former executive director of the South Carolina Republican Party, has been arrested for criminal domestic violence, after an altercation with his wife last month turned very ugly.

No story about this would be complete without the mug shot.

Oregon governor expands drought declaration

Oregon Governor Kate Brown declared a drought emergency on Monday in three southern and central Oregon counties, expanding upon earlier drought declarations the Democrat made in March, as the state faces record low snowpack levels.

Continuing drought has caused “natural and economic disaster conditions” in Oregon’s Crook, Harney and Klamath counties, heightening wildfire risk, and threatening wildlife and agriculture, Brown said in her declaration.

“Oregon’s unusually warm and dry winter has potentially dire consequences,” Brown said on Monday.

Hey everyone…back from nearly 3 weeks on the road, mostly in Slovenia. As I mentioned before leaving, I was concerned about the recurrence of a health problem I thought I had put behind me before I committed to this trip. I am very happy to report that I got by with only one really bad day this whole time…huge relief. I had some work to do over there, but I also managed to get a lot of fun time mixed in there. Here are a few observations about Slovenia for anyone interested:

- Slovenia is a NICE place. It was my first time there (and I think my 35th country visited in the last 25 years) and I was impressed. Maybe it is a cliché to call someplace a “crossroads”, but it does apply here. This is where Mediterranean, Germanic, Balkan and the wider Slavic Europe meet. The Romans knew it was an important spot, building some significant settlements here. There is still a tiny bit of Roman “Emona” to be seen in the modern capitial, Ljubljana.

- The economy is headed in the right direction, but probably a year or so behind the US. Like anywhere else, there is a wide disparity of economic conditions. In the formerly industrial region around Maribor, where I was based, there are an alarming number of younger people leaving for Austria and Germany.

- Before my visit I had the feeling that the differences in language and culture between the former Yugoslav republics had been exaggerated a bit for political reasons over the last two decades. I am now convinced that this is absolutely not the case.

- Even so, there is some nostalgia for certain aspects of the united Yugoslavia. I was on a road trip with a colleague, and he pointed out that all of the equipment we saw doing road work that day was German made. In his youth Yugoslavia industry was able to meet all of those types of needs.

- The standard of English in Ljubljana is remarkable. It is like the Netherlands in that it’s almost insulting to ask people in the service industry if they speak English. Outside of the capital is a different story, but I don’t think I ran into anyone who didn’t have a decent level of German there. Part of this is down to the mentality of living in a small country. Slovenes are taught from the 3rd grade that they are going to need at least one additional language. I also credit the fact that foreign TV programs are subtitled, not dubbed.

- While Slovenes can be anxious to differentiate themselves from their former Yugoslav brethren in some ways, this fortunately doesn’t extend to restaurants. I enjoyed more meals than I would care to admit here of პvapčići or pljeskavica…much meaty goodness!

I love getting to new places, but I would totally go back. There is nothing here that qualifies so much as an absolute must see for casual European travelers (with the possible exception of Lake Bled) it is a friendly, fun and affordable place to travel…and on the Euro too. It is certainly a simple side trip from Venice or Austria.

Of course, the immediate hue and cry will be that “It’s just another false allegation!” followed by “It’s all a democrat plot” with serving of “He must be over the target, he’s drawing flak!” for desert.

IIRC from an earlier story, the wife apparently has a collection of evidence going back quite a while documenting a chain of abuse. I hope she does, and I hope she uses it.

Batterers’ Intervention
“A batterer’s intervention program (BIP) is a program that batterers attend, most often as a part of a legal system response to their crime. Batterers may also attend a program voluntarily. A BIP can play an important role in a coordinated community response to intimate partner violence, but it is important that victim safety and offender accountability remain the primary goals of a BIP. Education and rehabilitation of the batterer are other goals a BIP may seek to meet. In SC, the Department of Social Services oversees approval of BIP programs across the state.”

Stopping by to say hi real quick…

Saw a couple of images posted by BwS concerning flooding here in KY. Wow.

Made the journey from Orlando back to Lexington on Friday. Took about 15 hours after getting caught in traffic and then hit the heavy rain crossing the TN/KY border. Was worried about rock-slides/mudslides driving through the mountains. The Kentucky River flooding was expansive. And as I got back to the house, walked into wet basement. Of course, just put down brand new carpet in October. So I had to go right to work, and worked through the night and most of the next day. Just continuing to move fans and work the shop vac. Probably have put down and spread over 100 pounds of kitty litter to help draw water out of the padding under the carpet. Took a break to check in. About to head back downstairs. And oh yeah, rain is forecast for this area for the rest of the week, 1-2 inches for Tuesday itself. And I’m fortunate. Others have had it much worse.

Being in a jail jumpsuit in the mug shot tells us he wasn’t just arrested and released. I’ve been arrested a couple of times (once was my fault), and you don’t wind up in that outfit just from being arrested. He probably got an overnight stay, then was bailed out. I doubt he’ll do time after his court date, but it’ll cost him some money.

There’s a new feature on Twitter. I guess there’s a “Quote Tweet” button (I can’t find it) where it just pasted the text to the tweet. Now it just embeds the tweet. This has lead to “Twitter Tunnels.” An example:

64 BeachDem  Apr 6, 2015 7:08:17pm

In a way, Todd Kincannon was what led me to regularly read Little Green Footballs (so you can either be happy or have yet another reason to curse his very name!)

I was writing a post elsewhere in early 2013 about False Equivalency and the Right Wing.

(Opening line--Just as an introduction: an apple is NOT an orange—nor is it a Porterhouse steak or a porkchop.)

Went on to discuss their ridiculous comparisons of themselves and civil rights leaders (sigh—some things never change)

(Middle section—You are NOT Rosa Parks. You are NOT Martin Luther King, Jr. You are NOT being lynched. You are NOT having fire hoses turned on you for having the audacity to want to go to school. You are NOT having your head bashed in for walking on a bridge. You are NOT being set upon by attack dogs for peacefully marching. Nor are you being kidnapped and murdered for advancing your ideas.

Your gun fetishists and hate-mongering fundamentalists bear no resemblance to the people who were (and, in many cases, still are) fighting to be treated as equal human beings.

Then I got to their then new TWITTER GULAG insanity, and Todd’s setting up the TGDN—Twitter Gulag Defense Network (I mean, seriously, could they be any more ridiculous).

(Section on TGDN idiocy—They seem to mostly blame Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs (they “gathered intel” and everything!) for this dastardly plot, although it appears to me that Charles spends most of his time laughing at them.

And speaking of lowlife grifters, Mr. Kincannon was/is as bad as the Ginger Avenger:

First he tried to collect money to hire a Twitter Assistant, because he couldn’t keep up with all the work (I am NOT making this up) Then, apparently when his need for an assistant didn’t prompt sufficient contributions, he claimed that someone has gone to the Columbia, SC police department to try to have him arrested and that they “swatted” his old office address or something.

So then he started looking for donations to his legal defense fund—sound familiar?

Todd Kincannon @ToddKincannon
The Left is trying to have me arrested over#TGDN. I cannot represent myself. Please contribute to #TGDN legal defense: is.gd

The article noted that males killing females is very common in the state. One would think that with SC being a major location of the “c”hristian Taliban, one wouldn’t find such rampant domestic abuse/violence, but since I grew up in the South, I know that what many say in public does not match their private behavior. Knowing people like him I’d move the threat from ‘might’ to ‘probably’. My wife says, “almost certainly.”

Abusers lose their shit when their control over their partners lessens. Sometimes it’s the partner who suffers, sometimes someone else.

My wife’s ex got out of prison just a few years ago for murdering the brother of his second wife. Murder 2 but should have been Murder 1. Except for the intervention of a neighbour it might have been my wife.

That was the topic for the main discussion at our recent issues conference (Democratic Party.) It was a real eye-opener. Some of the most egregious facts are that, in many cases, offenders can pay a fine instead of going to any kind of treatment or intervention. There are some great people down here trying to change things, but it’s very sad.

The one factoid that stood out to me was:
All 46 counties have at least one animal shelter to care for stray dogs and cats, but the state has only 18 domestic violence shelters to help women trying to escape abuse in the home.

The article you linked is just a brief look—the Post and Courier did an incredible series on it last year—really well done, but, I’ll warn you—pretty depressing.

Depends on how they structure the freelance contract. Some photogs have a first-publication/right of first refusal for photo assignments, and the photogs keep the rights, especially if they’re using their own equipment (which they almost always are nowadays). I had a friend who used to shoot freelance for the FW Star-Telegram, and he made some decent money on reselling photos to magazines.

Metal Band GWAR Sued for Allegedly Stealing Late Singer Dave Brockie’s Cremains

nbcnews.com

“The father of Dave Brockie, the late lead singer of the outlandish thrash metal band GWAR, has sued the band’s surviving members, accusing them of having stolen his son’s cremated remains, bass guitars and artwork, court documents revealed Monday.

“Dave Brockie — better known as Oderus Urungus in the gory, science fiction- and fantasy-inspired band followed obsessively by millions around the world — died March 23, 2014, of acute heroin toxicity.

“In the lawsuit, filed Thursday in state circuit court in Richmond, Virginia — where GWAR was formed in 1984 — Brockie’s father, William Brockie, the administrator of his estate, seeks $1 million in compensatory damages plus punitive damages for alleged breach of contract and unauthorized use of Dave Brockie’s image, as well as the return of Brockie’s cremains.” More

In the latest quest to find a martyr the religious right has found a chaplain:

Forbes, others question Navy chaplain’s removal

[…]

But the Navy chaplain - who’s fighting accusations that he pushed conservative Christian views about sexual relations and homosexuality on sailors - has drawn the interest of local congressmen.

U.S. Rep. Randy Forbes, a Chesapeake Republican and co-chairman of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, is questioning the Navy’s treatment of Modder. He led 34 other Republican legislators in sending a letter last week to the Secretary of the Navy asking for an explanation.

Modder was removed from his counseling duties at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in February because he “failed to show tolerance and respect” and “discriminated against students who were of different faiths and backgrounds,” according to the notice given to Modder by Capt. Jon Fahs, leader of the command in Goose Creek, S.C., near Charleston. […]

Fahs cited a half-dozen complaints filed by sailors in his letter to Modder, including: a sailor who said Modder told him homosexuality is wrong; a female sailor who says Modder told her she was “shaming herself in the eyes of God” for having premarital sex; and a pregnant sailor who says Modder criticized her for not being married.

Modder denies the allegations. He is working with a Texas-based religious rights advocacy group called the Liberty Institute. […]

The Family Research Council has also pressed for Modder’s reinstatement, sending an online petition with 100,000 names to the secretary of defense last week.

[…]

Meanwhile, Kibben is slated to meet in the coming days with Forbes and a handful of legislators to address their concerns. The lawmakers also want to talk about the Navy’s protection of religious freedom.

The article, which appears to me to try and present Chaplain Modder in a good light, with a picture of him provided by the Liberty Institute and another picture of him at a ceremony, still makes it clear that his captain reviewed the cases and is the one who dismissed Modder.

Because, heh, ducks or something.

But the real winner of the trophy is rapidly-curmudgeoning surgeon Ben:

Ben Carson Defines ‘Hip Hop’ as Opposing ‘Anything That Has to Do with Jesus Christ’

[…]

“We need to reestablish faith in our communities and the values and principles that got us through slavery, that got us through Jim Crow, and segregation, and all kinds of horrible things that were heaped upon us,” Carson said, according to Business Insider. “Why were we able to get through those? Because of our faith, because of our family, because of our values, and as we allow the hip hop community to destroy those things for us, and as we grasp onto what’s politically correct and not what is correct, we continue to deteriorate.”

The assertion that hip hop music stands in sharp opposition to “family values” received some pushback from the show’s host, who told Carson, “When you said ‘hip-hop,’ my antennae went up very quickly, because I said, ‘Wait a minute that sounds like an old argument that they used to make about rock ‘n’ roll/R&B back in the fifties.’ That’s what they used to say.”

In an attempt to better explain what he meant, Carson replied, “When I talk about the hip hop community, I’m talking about the aspect of modern society that pretty much dismisses anything that has to do with Jesus Christ, that’s what I’m talking about.”

The fact that Randy Forbes, a raging fundie wingnut, is involved is a pretty good indication of the validity of the claims. Some background on Forbes:

In 2010, Forbes filed an amicus brief calling for a vote on whether gay and lesbian residents of Washington D.C. should be allowed to marry. [10] Forbes was also a co-sponsor of HR 3829, a bill that would require the federal government to withhold marriage recognition from legally married gay and lesbian couples in certain states. [11][12] Forbes has supported amending the U.S. Constitution to prevent gay and lesbian couples from marrying. [13][14]

In late 2013, Congressman Forbes pressured the House GOP campaign arm to “deny support for some of the party’s gay congressional candidates.”[15][16] Forbes voted to prevent gay and lesbian service members from serving openly in the military. He also cosponsored HR3828, which would have prevented gay and lesbian service members from marrying on Department of Defense property. [17][18]

CHARLESTON, w.va. (AP) — Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has signed a bill blocking Tesla Motors from opening its high-end electric car stores in West Virginia.

The Democratic governor approved the bill that favors traditional franchise auto dealers in the state. Tesla works in direct-to-customer sales.

I wish people actually paid attention to what he says rather than what they think he says. He’s a raving theocratic Neo-Confederate nutcase who just uses libertarian language to bullshit people. He’s all in favor of harsh, draconian laws against gay people, women, weed, etc. as long as it’s done by the states and not the feds.

Is there video handy of Obama telling the yutes that there are a lot more important issues for them today than just marijuana legalization?

Yre: #174 Dr. Matt

Yes, Jesus was very particular about who He cured.

True. The Jesus of the gospels was quite an asshole in this respect.

21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to Him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession.”

23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to Him and urged Him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” 24 He answered, “I was only sent to the lost sheep of Israel.”

25 The woman came and knelt before Him. “Lord, help me!” she said. 26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs.” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she said, “but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

27 Then Jesus answered, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

Maybe had the couple begged and humiliated themselves, the good doctor would have helped.

The east coast reminded them of Jolly Old, so they lucked up. Even as far south as GA, Scots and the English took to the coastal and mountainous areas. It was the interiors that weren’t much to their liking, with the hot, humid weather, but perfect for working slaves, in their opinion.

I’m somewhat conflicted by the Tesla gambit, only because the dealerships ARE locally owned and provide probably a lot more tax money (and charitable contributions) to local governments/non-profits, etc.

Like when Wal-Mart come into town. Of course, I don’t think Tesla’s going to be big in smaller towns and cities for a long time.

220 lawhawk  Apr 7, 2015 6:47:51am

re: #217 Rev_Arthur_Icantbreatheing

A bill to legalize direct manufacturer sales to customers of motor vehicles is still in legislative hell. The current rule in place requires a customer to go online to buy a Tesla; the manufacturer can’t sell the car in the physical locations because it would undermine dealerships that are “independent” of the companies they serve.

nj.com

I pass by the Paramus Tesla dealer regularly, and it is quite shiny (and it filled a spot previously occupied by an electronics store).

Right now, there’s a bill working its way in NJ that would cap the number of direct manufacturer dealerships in state to four. Given that Tesla is a niche product at the moment, that seems reasonable (“showrooms” are in Paramus and Short Hills so far).

[update] - Gov Christie signed bill allowing up to four direct manufacturer dealerships to be opened.

Some states retain a ban on direct sales by manufacturers.

Tesla is a niche product at present. Their cheapest car right now is a $70,000. If their next car is revealed later this year, it will be in the $40-45,000 range. Still high for mass consumption, even if Tesla were able to meet mass consumption demand.

Four locations across NJ isn’t exactly a threat to any other dealership or manufacturer, or even the current dealer-manufacturer relationship even if GM, Toyota, or Honda decide to go the direct sale route themselves.

Especially luxury car makers, but even everyday drivers like Fords and Honda Fits sell well here. Chinese actually look down on their domestic brands as cheap copycats of foreign brands, so driving a foreign marque is a status symbol, no matter what the price level.

Tesla’s problem here is the same in most of America — charging stations.

I am of the same mind. Local businesses equals jobs. While shopping is going online in a big way, every online business (Amazon, is a good example) who offers little more than regional distribution centers, removes jobs from the local economy…and those regional jobs are, for the most part, low wage positions.

Perhaps not mass consumption but it is up there with other high-end cars (Caddy, Lincoln, BMW, Lexus, etc.) That said, I was shocked at how high prices are for some Buicks and Fords. $40k isn’t that much outside mainstream any longer.

I still think it’s a niche market due to what it is, but that’s a different thing.

I’m convicned that this is why SpaceX is building a launch site in South Texas.

If you look at a current map of charging stations here in Texas, they’re almost all concentrated in the big cities — Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston. There is virtually no reason for anyone outside those cities to buy an electric car right now, since you wouldn’t have a way to charge your vehicle on the go, especially on long drives.

Actually a tea party guy. More horrible people.

Morning!

I’ve heard several reports already about the Great Rand Paul tossing his hat and curly hair into the fray.

Rand Paul is what ever you want him to be. He is all things to all conservative/libertarians.

Me, I want him to be gone as a politician. He is nothing to me.

Does the great governor realize Tesla is electric…and that some of the eastern power plants that generate that electricity use coal. in other words, the governor could have made that about his state’s resource, jobs, etc.

Note…I am not a coal lover, and hope we find ways to get around it as an energy source, or a way to use the source in a cleaner way. I just do not understand how he can go against his own state and politically he will most likely be attacked for his stance by any opponent.

If Obama leaves office having taken us almost a quarter of the way from nowhere to a civilized healthcare system, and negotiates peace with Iran and Cuba—and there is a future where people of normal human intelligence are allowed to write history (doubtful, but who knows?)—he will go down with Lincoln and FDR. Anti-Abortion Group’s Effort To Defund Family Planning Clinics Backfires Spectacularly

Just a few days ago, the right-wing group sent out an email blast to its supporters proclaiming that its prayers had successfully defunded abortion in Maine…

That move caught the attention of a few prominent bloggers, who decided to change the conversation. Mike Tipping, who writes for the Bangor Daily News, encouraged his readers to donate to Maine Family Planning to prove CCL wrong about God’s attitude toward reproductive health services.

Popular sex columnist and LGBT activist Dan Savage followed suit, telling his followers to “make the haters at Maine’s Christian Civic League regret sending out that email blast by donating to Maine Family Planning and pushing them past last year’s fundraising total.”

It worked.

Obviously they have created a new way to scam. Usually they call and say they are with Microsoft Technical…now they use a recorded message and ask you to select “1” to speak to a tech person.

That is probably put in place to protect the idiots on the other end that get some serious verbal thrashing about being low life scum.

I wonder why the number they called from won’t allow me to call back. I wanted to tell them I was calling from the Ohio Attorney General offices about some important messages I am getting from Ohio citizens regarding their scam activities.

Remember this 2010 Rand Paul great idea?

(Newser) - Border fence proposals are a dime a dozen among Republican candidates, but Rand Paul’s is different: it’s underground, and it’s electrified. “My plans include an underground electric fence, with helicopter stations to respond quickly to breaches of the border,” state the Kentucky senatorial hopeful’s website—although Republican officials approached by the Huffington Post seemed baffled by the proposal.

“I have not heard that,” said National Republican Senate Committee Chair John Cornyn. “Underground? What would happen? How would that work?” Paul’s aides declined to elaborate on his fence plans, which, the Post notes, would likely cost well over $1 billion to implement and require the seizure of some private land, a move sharply at odds with Rand’s libertarian philosophy.

IIRC, Paul also claimed that his fence could be constructed for a lower price per running foot than Home Depot plastic white picket fence. Good times.

Because, for the most part, they are, right? Although, having seen the Top Gear China episode done a few years ago, some manufacturers are trying to change that, mostly through buying some of those “foreign” marques (such as Saab and MG) and their technology and engineering.

Oh dear. She’s obviously been driving up and down I-5 reading the signs put up by farmers who planted orchards without checking to see if they had senior water rights. She might have looked east to the Sierras while she was at it and noted there was very, very little snow up there.
The man-made aspect is the idea that any water at all should be allowed to reach the sea-never mind that fishermen might need fish breeding in the streams, enormous ecological damage, and, oh yeah, salt water infiltrating the aquifers.

I just turned it back off. That was a quick way to get sick.

The American Family Association sees thing just getting worse and worse for Christians, predicting in a new email that by 2060:

Conservative Christians will be treated as second class citizens, much like African Americans were prior to civil rights legislation in the 1960s.

Cities with a name from the Bible such as St. Petersburg, Bethlehem, etc. will be forced to change their name due to separation of church and state.

That, in a nutshell, is conservatives’ great fear - that one day, they will be treated like they’ve always treated others. Scares them to death.

They claim liberals are the real hateful ones and fascists all the while they cheer on Vladimir fucking Putin. Conservatives love to talk about how they “support” freedom but all I see from conservatives time and time again are measures that limit a woman’s right to choose, measures that favor one religious group over another, and seek to treat people who love people of the same gender as second class citizenship. American conservatism is about as pro freedom as fascism is.
