Brian Beller and Marco Minneman are also frequent co-conspirators with the always-amazing Mike Keneally. So glad to see Guthrie in these circles.

I really don’t know why they chose the name Aristocrats, unless it was a subtle joke.
OK, this is totally NSFL (not safe for life) - you have been warned.

I love Aristocrats jokes as well as the next demented fellow, but I’d never heard of this Guthrie Govan before this video, and I am blown away. Already ordering this album, and probably many more from such a huge talent.

This coincides perfectly with my new-found audiophile bug, and the new SVS PB-2000 I’ve just hooked up to this PC’s sound system-replacing the craptastic sound card with a dig. receiver was the best idea I’ve ever come up with.

here is a question for the lizard hacker community:

i recently sent out a product upgrade with the product attached as a zip file. as you know, many company email systems will spit up on attachments with certain extensions, like a .zip

i got a bounceback, several days later, from a company whose address is not in my business records. yet, the bounceback looks like the kind i get from addresses on my email list that have anti zip file filters.

why would i get a bounceback if somebody forwarded the update to a 3rd party? otherwise, how could i get a direct bounceback from an email address i never sent anything to???

it is a puzzlement

Maybe the company changed names or got bought. They might set up their email server to accept under the old name and bounce back under the new address without technically “forwarding” the email. Doesn’t explain the time lag tho’ unless the rejection was made by a POP3 downloader, who came in to work a few days after it was sent, and not the central server. It was a 500 (not 400) level reply code?

thanks! it was probably an old address forwarded to a new one.

there was no reply code per se that i could see on the full header - rather, the email was bounced back with this notification:

New York senator Jeff Klein was reciting repeatedly when he his “female, junior communications staffer” pocket tweeted a link to a Google Image search for ‘susan del percio hot’—from her phone, of course.

Reports Business Insider:

In the tweet, which was deleted shortly after it was posted, there was a string of seemingly random characters followed by a link to a search for “susan del percio hot.” Susan Del Percio is a GOP strategist who has worked as an adviser to Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and the 2013 mayoral campaign of Republican Joe Lhota.

Klein spokeswoman Candice Giove sent a statement to Business Insider blaming the tweet on an unnamed staffer.

You can buy a used Mercedes for less than the price of a new Toyota Yaris.

It’s a very dated example, but a friend of mine in high school drove a M-B she bought for just $300. It was a boat, but roomy and very safe (for the occupants, anyway). A diesel Mercedes can run for a million miles or more.

But upkeep is a pain in the wallet. The parts are expensive, and you have to find an independent mechanic to avoid the dealerships picking your pocket. That was why a doctor friend traded in his M-B for an Oldsmobile. Less panache, but more practical.

I’m sure a lot of people buy them just for that emblem on the hood, not realizing the upkeep. If you could find a decent M-B mechanic who wasn’t in the dealer network, you could be golden.

“Brontosaurus” was a household name, until dinosaur scientists ruled that the charismatic “thunder lizard” had been misnamed and should have been called apatosaurus all along.

Now the familiar brontosaurus name might come thundering back. Fresh research suggests it’s a unique individual after all, deserving its own name.

I feel bad for Pluto right now because you know it is reading this and getting its hopes up.

Judge denies federal government’s request to lift temporary hold on Obama’s immigration action

usnews.com

HOUSTON (AP) — A federal judge in Texas late Tuesday kept a temporary hold on President Barack Obama’s executive action that sought to shield millions of immigrants from deportation, rejecting a U.S. Department of Justice request that he allow the action to go ahead.

“U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen in Brownsville refused to lift the preliminary injunction he granted on Feb. 16 at the request of 26 states that oppose Obama’s action.

(snip)

“The coalition of 26 states, led by Texas, filed the lawsuit to overturn Obama’s executive action, arguing that it is unconstitutional and would force them to invest more in law enforcement, health care and education.” More

Of course; they don’t want to invest in any people. Hanen is a GWB nominee and was confirmed May 2002 by a 97-0 vote after first being nominated by the elder Bush in 1992 when Hanen was 39 yrs old. He was in a private practice until his confirmation in 2002.

I know neither one has a chance now of being elected president, and I’m hoping their exposure on the national stage to kill any future hopes of running for higher office. If we’re really lucky, their performance now may also kill their Senate re-election chances, too.

It’s a very sensible idea, but — even though it comes from a Wall Street guy — it won’t catch on among the GOP/Tea Party types. He’s got Obama cooties.

Rahm Emanuel wins runoff in Chicago

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel won a second term on Tuesday after a bruising, multimillion-dollar campaign in the first mayoral runoff in the city’s history.

Emanuel handily led challenger Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, 56 percent to 44 percent, with 73 percent of the vote tallied, when The Associated Press called the race.

The result ends a historic campaign in which Emanuel, President Barack Obama’s first White House chief of staff, raised — by some estimates — close to $30 million (with the help of a supportive super PAC), with much of the investment made in television ads designed to prop up the mayor, who had abysmal approval ratings just last summer.

In recent weeks, Emanuel blanketed the airwaves with TV ads that called into question Garcia’s ability to manage city finances. Anecdotal reports of a huge pro-Emanuel ground presence suggested an effort to swamp Garcia’s underfunded campaign.

I don’t really like Rahm, but i have respect for him and I’m glad he won. Garcia would have been a disaster, and thankfully enough Chicagoans saw that.

Welp, I guess after this story, the RW will raise some money for Slager’s family—but not for Walter Scott’s.

“Slager, who was also formerly a member of the Coast Guard, had not previously been disciplined by the department, the Post and Courier said. He has two stepchildren and a pregnant wife.

“The paper reported that in 2013 a man accused him of shooting him with a stun gun without cause, but that Slager was cleared of wrongdoing after an internal police investigation.”

Wonder what else is in his personnel file?

And how ironic that these 2 men were both Coast Guard vets? Who, you might ask, had the greater opportunity to further himself because of his race?

An infrastructure bank would still need funding, and the GOP is resistant to anything resembling investment in public goods. We see this time and again. Or, they claim that there are other, better projects that should be funded in order to kill projects they oppose, and then they kill not only the project in opposition, but the project they ostensibly supported.

China is building out its roads and railway systems*, and planning hydroelectric and wind energy facilities. And they’ll probably put a Chinese human on the Moon within the next five years.

Meanwhile, the USA will be debating the theory of evolution, global warming, and the “socialist” Affordable Care Act. Instead of moving forward, we’ll be spinning in circles.

* There is now a high speed rail station just two hours from where I live. That means I could be in Shanghai in about nine hours. For reference, that’s about 1500 km (930 miles) or about the distance from NYC to Jacksonville, Florida.

If you had to get to Shanghai what would your options be, and what would each of them cost in terms of time and/or money?

Mentioning this since high-speed rail is pretty much dead-on-arrival in the US unless there is massive subsidy made for it. In the places it would get enough use to break even it is competing with existing rail and infrastructure for right-of-way as well as airlines. For other/longer stretches in the US there would be right-of-way and construction issues followed by a high likelihood of generating insufficient passengers to come close to break even. And, once again, it will be in direct competition with airlines (for speed) and buses (for economy).

Thing is that there are massive subsidies in place for cars and airplanes too - just people don’t see them in the same respect.

Planes require massive infrastructure and subsidies to maintain/support airports, ATC, regulatory environment to keep planes from crashing into each other and the ground.

Roads likewise need massive subsidies to build and maintain the road network.

But somehow, rail has become disconnected from the discussion. Long haul passenger rail may not make sense in the US, but regional HSR definitely would (starting with NEC, but also extending to places like the research corridor in NC, CA (though not necessarily the Central Valley, but that was chosen to reduce land acquisition costs), FL from Tampa to Orlando to Miami, Chicago to STL, etc.

Even safety improvements like eliminating at-grade crossings is something that sufficient funding isn’t available for. Or funding to inspect and maintain thousands of miles of freight lines.

Passenger rail is treated like a red-headed stepchild, even though there are places (NEC again) that carry more passengers between DC/NYC/Boston than the comparable air shuttles do. Acela and NEC regional has 75% of the total market share of air/rail traffic between NYC and DC.

It’s proof that HSR would work under the right circumstances and with sufficient funding (think of the billions spent on airports and attempts to upgrade ATC). Further upgrades to NEC would result in reduction in congestion at NYC and DC airports since air traffic would have freed up slots to other destinations.

Good question, and I had to do some checking.
Option 1: Bus to Changsha (5 hours/$21), fly to Shanghai (2.5 hours/$87 best price) = $108
Option 2: Direct train to Shanghai (23 hours, price between $21 for hard seat to $90 for soft sleeper) = $90 tops
Option 3: Bus to Changsha (5 hours/$21), high speed rail to Shanghai (5.5 hours/$80 for second class ticket or $128 first class) = $101 minimum
Option 4: Train to Huaihua (1.5 hours, prices range from $1.50 to $17), high speed rail to Shanghai (7.5 hours/$104 second class or $168 first class) = $105 minimum

The prices are all pretty much around $100 total, but the cost does not factor in time and hassle factors. For example, option 1 does not include delays for the baggage and airport security check, or the flight delays Chinese airlines are notorious for. I’d also have to take the airport shuttle, which takes about an hour.

The expansion of the high speed rail system has forced the domestic airlines to lower their prices. I’m not clear as to how much government subsidies the various transport sectors get, however.

Yes, these improvements were massively subsidized in the past in order to get the infrastructure built up. Railroads following the Civil War, and then roads following the first World War (local mostly) and then both road (interstates) and airports to a much greater extent following the second World War. Along with pretty much unheralded work for ship and barge traffic since they don’t do much passenger service.

Things might shift back towards rail in the future for the sake of oil economy or other efficiencies. Next to barge/ship rail is very efficient for moving goods. Weak point is point of service compared to an auto. But airliner and intercity bus is dumping you at a central terminal just like a train.

As an exercise I did a quick price compare for getting from NYC to Jacksonville - assuming I had to leave on Friday to get there and do a round trip heading back on Sunday:
Bus (Greyhound) - ~$100 each way and taking 21 hours each way.
Train (Amtrak) - ~$300 each way - though I also hit a $134 ticket for the way back. Takes 20 hours each way. (Also can spend more and get a sleeping compartment.)
Airliner (USAir) - $530 for a round-trip taking under 2 hours each way.

And I think with further notice the prices might drop a bit for the airliner or train. Or given the cities finding a cut-rate carrier.

re: #90 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

Incidentally, China has intercity bus service, too, but I usually don’t take bus rides that are longer than 8 hours. There is a direct bus to Shanghai from my city, but it takes almost as long as the direct train and is more expensive. Plus, it’s boring and the bus latrine is invariably nasty — when it’s working.

Interesting comparison. My prices are much cheaper than yours, but we’d need to factor in the COL in each country. A well paid middle class person in China can make at least $1,000 - $2,000 a month. For them, $100 for speedy or comfortable transport is not an issue.

Someone in America making $2,000 a month would have to take the Greyhound.

That was an “express” Greyhound routing too. For a non-major city source or destination I would expect that trip to take longer and possibly cost more.

Another option that I did not cost out was renting a car for 3-5 days and driving it oneself. Probably not much savings in cash, more personal time and stress due to doing the driving, but getting flexibility in terms of schedule, avoiding terminals, and getting to final destination.

I realize this is way upthread now but I seem to recall that the last Labour government in the UK commissioned a long-term strategic study of their domestic rail network from people who foolishly thought they were actually being asked for an optimal, rational solution rather than something politically expedient.

They apparently calculated that the lowest-cost, lowest-emission solution was to pave all the existing rail tracks and make them dedicated roads for mid-to-high-speed buses. You get a lot of efficiency out of a bus if it rarely has to slow down or stop, and they’re much more flexible than trains, easier to maintain and so on.

That report got shelved pretty quick. People like the romance of the iron road, as it turns out.

re: #136 Higgs Boson’s Mate

Well, that’s not much sillier than digging two 40 foot diameter, 35 mile long tunnels under the Sacramento Delta. My first thought when Brown proposed that boondoggle was, “Governor Moonbeam, you’re back!” The simple fact is that California’s population continues to grow and there is an inelastic requirement for drinking water. That means that Big Ag is going to have to take a hit sooner or later.

And Asia is going to have to get over its love affair with almonds (that’s where most of the almonds produced go).

I drive the I-5 north up through the lower san Jaoquin every summer on a fishing trip to King’s Canyon. I’ve seen groves of trees in virtual “swamps” just flooded with water then there are the water bottling plants like Nestle and others.

Sure we need to cut back on water use as a whole but there are a lot of bigger culprits than the average family. I was happy to see on the news last night that the media is also starting to notice how the wealthier communities are not pitching in and overusing water as well. Specifically pointing out Newport Beach.

I wonder about that conclusion, as a non-expert. I would assume electrified rail would be more cost-effective and less polluting than the buses needed to haul the same number of passengers.

Iran had the temerity to suggest that even their supply of fossil fuels will eventually run out and so they want to move away from them for power generation therefore, Iran must be punished.

re: #142 iossarian

Bus versus rail may have lower capital costs, since the rail requires separate ROW, but in order to carry the same capacity, you’d need dozens of buses just to equal a single train. Each bus would need an operator, and trains can be operated with a single engineer (and some can operate without any conductors on board, but most US operators have several per train). The personnel costs quickly overtake the capital costs over time, and that doesn’t even address the lower capacity.

For instance, a single 10 car subway train can handle 1500 people (150 per car, 10 cars) or more. To get that capacity via buses, you’d need 30 buses (each 50 people each). Since each bus requires an operator, you’re looking at 30 drivers - just to replace a single subway car.

In some urban areas, light rail makes more sense than buses or subway systems, because they don’t have the population density or traffic to support a subway, but have more than just what a bus can handle. BRT is sometimes seen as a lower cost alternative, but BRT requires separate lanes, off-bus purchases, and other infrastructure changes to make it effective.

You might want to consider this, and ask yourself why:

EXCLUSIVE: SC officers exonerated in more than 200 shootings

thestate.com

That’s neither here, nor there in regard to what we are discussing now.

The cop was on the record that he had shot Walter Scott before the video came out. The shooting automatically makes it a homicide.

Nobody said that it was a tragic accident and nobody said that it was a suicide. This automatically leaves homicide.

France’s Marine Le Pen opposes father’s election candidacy

The head of France’s far-right Front National, Marine Le Pen, has said she will move to stop her father Jean-Marie from standing in polls later this year.
In a statement she said her father’s status as honorary president of the party “does not mean he can take the Front National hostage”.
Last week she condemned her father for repeating his claim that the Nazi gas chambers were “a detail of history”.
She is widely expected to run for president in 2017.
In the statement (in French), she says her father “seems to have entered a veritable spiral between a scorched earth strategy and political suicide”.
“Given this situation, I have told him I will oppose… his candidacy in Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur,” she said.
She said his “crude provocations seem aimed at harming me but, alas, they have dealt a very heavy blow to the whole movement”.
The French media is now speculating on Jean-Marie Le Pen’s possible ejection from the party he founded 40 years ago, the BBC’s Hugh Schofield reports from Paris.

It’s very possible the report got shelved in part because it was flawed, but as I recall, they got into all the details of operation cost etc.

Bus emissions are also pretty similar to electric train emissions if you’re assuming current mix of electricity production.

Mind you, in the UK, one of the things that’s happened in the past 20 years is that virtually all trains in/out of London now operate without conductors, and with ticket gates in the stations instead, which may have moved the needle. I totally agree with the point that probably the biggest cost driver is personnel-to-passenger ratio, which is also why the London Underground isn’t going anywhere soon.

Friends and co-workers in Pittsburgh take the train between there and Philadelphia* all the time. And my accountant is looking into using the train rather than bus between Philadelphia and New York City. Train costs more, but she has more space and can actually do useful work as a result as compared to the bus.

* - Route is actually Pittsburgh to New York City, but the train has a stop in Philadelphia.

We just had a park and ride installed this far north of Pittsburgh (about 80 miles north) to catch the bus down to Pittsburgh rather than drive (and pay parking, and the hassle, etc). I had been reluctant to take a position in Pittsburgh because of the drive, parking, etc. This kind of thing might make me reconsider.

Homicides are criminal, excusable, or justifiable.

Slager has been charged with murder, a criminal homicide, although it’s not clear what degree, as far as I can find, although I suspect first degree, since he’s not allowed bond at this point. That could be plea-bargained down, if his defense atty can prove there was no premeditation.

First he used a television interview to defend his view, which he first stated in 1996, that the gas chambers used to kill Jews in the Holocaust were “merely a detail in the history of the second world war” - a remark for which he was originally convicted of inciting racial hatred and fined. He also holds a conviction for contesting crimes against humanity after saying the Nazi occupation of France was not “particularly inhumane”.

Marine Le Pen said she “deeply disagreed” and that he was being deliberately provocative.

Then in an interview on Wednesday with Rivarol, a far-right newspaper, he attacked his daughter’s criticism of his Holocaust comments, saying: “You’re only betrayed by your own.”

He also told Rivarol he defended Pétain, who was convicted of treason after the second world war. He told the magazine: “I have never considered Marshall Pétain a traitor. He was treated too severely after the liberation.” He had earlier said there were fervent Pétain-supporters in the Front National.

“However, investigators are not saying when they will publicly release the information or whether they consider the death of 54-year-old Otis Byrd to be homicide or suicide.

“At each milestone in this case, the FBI’s first step is to personally brief family members,” Don Alway, special agent in charge of the FBI in Mississippi, said in a statement to The Associated Press on Wednesday.” More

Efforts to reach family members by the press were unsuccessful.

I just saw a startling statistic on a friend who posted about this story on Facebook but only 18 officers have been charged with in the line of duty murder in the past 20 years. I had been reluctant to take a position in Pittsburgh because of the drive, parking, etc. This kind of thing might make me reconsider.

Pittsburgh has had closer park-and-rides for years. That it is shifting farther out is not surprising. Larger cities (Philly, NYC, etc.) also have regional rail services that can handle longer commutes, but I don’t see Pittsburgh developing that. Or they’d develop a shorter run first, perhaps along the Allegheny Valley.

No more discount codes on renewals, prices keep creeping up higher & higher, their interface sucks, and to add insult to injury you still have to endure all their crappy in-your-face pimping of their other services (and don’t even get me started on their stupid ads with the female race car driver).

Good riddance.

Well, it is “GoDaddy”, not “GoMommy”. : )

Big Spender, but it won’t help.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, formed 3 Super PACs this week, say they will have $31 million in bank by Friday - @bpolitics

Of which about $25 million will go to ‘operating costs and salaries.’

Well I won’t be getting any Buddy hugs today after so dastardly squirting flea stuff on the back of his neck a couple of hours ago. He won’t come in or even look at me. You think cats can hold a grudge? Amateurs!

You big meanie!!!

How could you let your Buddy down like that?

Tell him some of the Lizards have scolded you and he can now forgive you. Give him a hug and some pets from us too.

Harder for them to get you if they suddenly animate as a zombie. Of course.

I must have gotten a Chinese carrier on the last bus trip I was on when I visited a friend in Akron. Buffalo to Cleveland meant about four hours in a bus smelling of long rotting feces.

It’s already been pointed out that radical religion in politics is a polarizing game killer. Due to conviction of absolute rightness of position(s) the ability for compromise and negotiation goes out the window.

Rand Paul: “The First Amendment says keep government out of religion. It doesn’t say keep religion out of government”

It does not mean banning religious expression from the public sphere, but it does mean that government can show no preference for a particular belief system or church over another

Freepers are predicting that he’ll be acquitted and get a cabinet position and a lucrative recording/publishing contract. Being proven wrong has no effect on them, which is why they are RWNJs in the first place.

338 ObserverArt  Apr 8, 2015 11:06:09am

By the way, I saw some of the earlier comments about Rand Paul and his rather bad handling of the interviews by female news people. I usually watch the first hour of the Today show (the news part) and saw that bit with Savannah Guthrie. Rand was a total asshole with her. I thought she was really going to let him have it, but she kept her cool.

Last night I caught some video of Rand Paul’s big announcement kickoff yesterday and he acted like he was already president. The look on his face as he looked out to the crowd after he made his announcement was just the look of an arrogant ass.

I noticed it even more this morning the way he looked into the camera in the Today Show interview. Nose up, head back…big man.

I have a feeling this is all going to go to Rand’s already rather swelled head. I see him being an insufferable jerk from here on out. Not that he isn’t already. But now he is a presidential candidate and so he will be more special than ever.

It is going to be fun watching guys like him and Cruz begin to get theirs. I just hope some of the journalists decide not to softball these fools. It is not time for that. What we need now is deconstruction of the bullshitters.

That other shooting is the one that had me balling my eyes out. They flat out murdered an obviously mentally ill man in cold blood and not a peep. It happened days after Michael Brown was killed, and not too far away, but next to nothing was said.

And I cried and cried and cried.
