Rand Paul Seems to Have a Problem With Being Interviewed by Women

We should note that this isn’t the first time Rand Paul has been patronizing and insulting to a female interviewer; earlier this year he actually shushed CNBC host Kelly Evans when she pressed him about his nutty statements on vaccination.

The pseudo-libertarian crackpot seems to have a real problem with assertive women.

Just posted this comment in the previous thread and saw this one open about the same time. Since it is to this topic…here it is again.

- - - - -

By the way, I saw some of the earlier comments about Rand Paul and his rather bad handling of the interviews by female news people. I usually watch the first hour of the Today show (the news part) and saw that bit with Savannah Guthrie. Rand was a total asshole with her. I thought she was really going to let him have it, but she kept her cool.

Last night I caught some video of Rand Paul’s big announcement kickoff yesterday and he acted like he was already president. The look on his face as he looked out to the crowd after he made his announcement was just the look of an arrogant ass.

I noticed it even more this morning the way he looked into the camera in the Today Show interview. Nose up, head back…big man.

I have a feeling this is all going to go to Rand’s already rather swelled head. I see him being an insufferable jerk from here on out. Not that he isn’t already. But now he is a presidential candidate and so he will be more special than ever.

It is going to be fun watching guys like him and Cruz begin to get theirs. I just hope some of the journalists decide not to softball these fools. It is not time for that. What we need now is deconstruction of the bullshitters.

“…The strangest episode of Paul’s time at Baylor occurred one afternoon in 1983 (although memories about all of these events are understandably a bit hazy, so the date might be slightly off), when he and a NoZe brother paid a visit to a female student who was one of Paul’s teammates on the Baylor swim team. According to this woman, who requested anonymity because of her current job as a clinical psychologist, “He and Randy came to my house, they knocked on my door, and then they blindfolded me, tied me up, and put me in their car. They took me to their apartment and tried to force me to take bong hits. They’d been smoking pot.” After the woman refused to smoke with them, Paul and his friend put her back in their car and drove to the countryside outside of Waco, where they stopped near a creek. “They told me their god was ‘Aqua Buddha’ and that I needed to bow down and worship him,” the woman recalls. “They blindfolded me and made me bow down to ‘Aqua Buddha’ in the creek. I had to say, ‘I worship you Aqua Buddha, I worship you.’ At Baylor, there were people actively going around trying to save you and we had to go to chapel, so worshiping idols was a big no-no.”

Nearly 30 years later, the woman is still trying to make sense of that afternoon. “They never hurt me, they never did anything wrong, but the whole thing was kind of sadistic. They were messing with my mind. It was some kind of joke.”

Paul faces the problem in the Primary race that usually only plagues GOP candidates in the General - he has to convince a new crowd that he doesn’t really believe all that stuff he USED TO say, so that they’ll vote for him, while simultaneously convincing his longtime supporters that he’s only pretending to believe in the stuff he’s spouting NOW, so that he can do all the stuff he always talked about.

But you have to be smoother, and a more brazen and convincing liar to pull that off. Getting pissy about it doesn’t help.

Speaking of crucifixion, it remains a legal form of execution in Saudi Arabia and theoretically in Iran and the United Arab Emirates. SA adds the refinement that the condemned should be executed first, usually by beheading, THEN nailed up. Yes, there exists a place in the 21st century, a wealthy and influential place at that, where the authorities may lawfully crucify a headless body.

But Kelly, the judge, ruled that sentencing Rojano-Nieto to 25 years in prison or longer would violate his constitutional rights. A spokeswoman for the Orange County prosecutor said they are considering appealing the ruling.

“It was a surprise and we sent out a media advisory because of that,” said spokewoman Roxi Fyad.

And already there is a Facebook group dedicated to recalling Kelly in response to the ruling. Kelly, a former University of Notre Dame basketball player, has served as a Superior Court Judge since 2000.

According to Wikipedia:

After some stalling, it was eventually broadcast by the PBS programme World in most of the US on 12 May 1980, although some PBS stations did not do so. For example, in South Carolina, the PBS affiliate cancelled broadcast of the film, a decision influenced by fact that the then US Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, John C. West, had formerly been the state’s Governor.

good freaking grief:

In a recent apt example, notorious anti-Islam and far-right Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders has announced he will be addressing members of Congress at two events later this month. Wilders, who has called for a ban on the Qur’an, the construction of new mosques, and Muslim headscarves, boasted on his blog of his invitation to the United States by members of Congress. His invitees are none other than far-right congressmen Steve King (R-IA), known for his vociferous anti-immigrant stances, and Louie Gohmert (R-TX), infamous for his House floor tirades about “terror babies” and claims that “radical Islamists” are pretending to be Hispanics to come to the United States. The trans-Atlantic alliance is in fact a match made in heaven, as Wilders’ conspiratorial and xenophobic views align well with the extreme right fringe of the Republican Party.

New Study Shows Arctic Permafrost May Be Thawing Faster Than We Thought

thinkprogress.org

“Scientists might have to change their projected timelines for when Greenland’s permafrost will completely melt due to man-made climate change, now that new research from Denmark has shown it could be thawing faster than expected.

“Published Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change, the research shows that tiny microbes trapped in Greenland’s permafrost are becoming active as the climate warms and the permafrost begins to thaw. As those microbes become active, they are feeding on previously-frozen organic matter, producing heat, and threatening to thaw the permafrost even further.

“In other words, according to the research, permafrost thaw could be accelerating permafrost thaw to a “potentially critical” level.” More

We are so fucked.

Hey, let’s celebrate some good news on the front page for a change!

Residents of Ferguson made history yesterday with a record turnout, electing two black candidates—Ella Jones and Wesley Bell—to the City Council. The noteworthy vote ushers in a new era for the local assembly: for the first time since Ferguson’s founding, half of the council seats are held by African Americans.

Worth a read:
What More Is There to Say? On Walter Scott and Black Death

The difficulty of responding, again, to something we’ve seen so many times, and will see again, is not lost on me. As a writer and editor of a news outlet, it is my job to speak up when necessary and to use this platform to the best of my ability. But the constant onslaught of black death weighs on my shoulders. Last night, and much of this morning, I found myself at a loss for words. When asked by another editor if I had “any thoughts on Walter Scott,” I bucked at the idea. All I could think was, Fuck, what more can I say that I haven’t already? Writing “Black Lives Matter” has but so many iterations. When I sat down to write this afternoon, I found myself grabbing for the same words I have used in this space before, the same obvious truths that I have imparted onto you, the reader. But we are here again. So I must try.

It’s insulting and stupid. You can’t just substitute one woman for another. Women don’t just exist as some sort of hive vagina where we’re programmed to support every woman who comes along regardless of her party or platform.

McCain ditching people he actually agreed with for his VP and going with Palin was one of the most deeply stupid, cynical moves I’d ever seen. It was craven and obvious, and I can’t believe people fell for it.

A blank round doesn’t provide enough gas pressure to cycle the action of an automatic or semi-auto rifle.

A blank fire adapter plugs the barrel, forcing the gas pressure back, allowing the rifle to fire again.

154 RealityBasedSteve  Apr 8, 2015 12:44:55pm

re: #148 Rev_Arthur_Icantbreatheing

Ok, someone explain this one to me, please?

Edit: I originally read that as “black-firing adaptor” given the news of the day.

Blank rounds (used in training for example) have a reduced charge and don’t generate enough pressure to work the action on the rifle to chamber the next round. A BFA is basically a cap with a small hole drilled in it that screws onto the end of the barrel, and creates enough back pressure to work the action.

Since it blocks the barrel, if you attempted to fire a live round with it, it would cause great damage to the rifle, and probably the shooter as well.

You wouldn’t go into combat with a BFA on your rifle any more than you would wearing Florescent Orange Camo.

RBS

155 Kragar  Apr 8, 2015 12:45:24pm

Obviously, any weapon with a BFA on it isn’t going to be much use in an actual combat situation.

From a Google cache of Wilders’ blogpost:

Geert Wilders MP, leader of the Dutch Party for Freedom (PVV), will hold two speeches in Washington DC in late April for members of the US Congress.

On Wednesday April 29th, he will speak at a reception offered to him by Congressman Louie Gohmert (R, TX).
That same day, he speaks at the invitation of Congressman Steve King (R, IA) at the breakfast meeting of members of the US Congress belonging to the renowned Conservative Opportunity Society, a group founded in 1984 by Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Wilders: “I feel deeply honored by the invitations. In my speeches I will warn my American colleagues of the dangers of Islamization.”

After his visit to Washington, Geert Wilders travels to Garland, Texas, where on May 3rd he will give a speech and award a prize of $10,000 for the best Muhammad cartoon.
