Dutch Far Right Anti-Islam Demagogue Invited to Address Members of Congress

Mainstream GOP extremism
Wingnuts • Views: 28,630

One of the horrible political developments of the past few years has been the complete acceptance of radical anti-Muslim hatred by the Republican Party. The nastiest bigoted conspiracy theories and fear-mongering have become totally mainstream GOP positions; fantasies about shariah law taking over America, accusations of terrorist ties against innocent people, outright lies everywhere you turn.

There’s plenty to criticize George W. Bush for, but one thing he got right was his refusal to demonize all Muslims for the terrorism of Al Qaeda after 9/11. But nowadays there’s absolutely nobody in the Republican Party with the courage to stand against the tide of hate speech and bigotry, and right wing media and blogs are just chock full of anti-Muslim ranting, every single day.

And today’s awful case in point: representatives Steve King (R-IA) and Louie Gohmert (R-TX) have invited notorious far right Dutch Islamophobe Geert Wilders to speak on Capitol Hill and to a group founded by Newt Gingrich.

In a recent apt example, notorious anti-Islam and far-right Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders has announced he will be addressing members of Congress at two events later this month. Wilders, who has called for a ban on the Qur’an, the construction of new mosques, and Muslim headscarves, boasted on his blog of his invitation to the United States by members of Congress. His invitees are none other than far-right congressmen Steve King (R-IA), known for his vociferous anti-immigrant stances, and Louie Gohmert (R-TX), infamous for his House floor tirades about “terror babies” and claims that “radical Islamists” are pretending to be Hispanics to come to the United States. The trans-Atlantic alliance is in fact a match made in heaven, as Wilders’ conspiratorial and xenophobic views align well with the extreme right fringe of the Republican Party.

After inquiries to Gohmert’s office for additional details about the April 29 reception, his staff merely told me that Gohmert had invited the Dutch politician to speak on Capitol Hill but that Gohmert is not hosting the reception. Wilders is also expected to speak at a breakfast the same day for lawmakers belonging to the Conservative Opportunity Society, a group that was founded by former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich. “I feel deeply honored by the invitations. In my speeches I will warn my American colleagues of the dangers of Islamization,” wrote Wilders on his personal blog.

If John Boehner wants to try and not be remembered as the worst Speaker in history, he needs to slam Gohmert and King’s head into the wall for this.

This isn’t Republican/Democrat issue; the issue is who is actually running the House, Bohener or a group of radicals who want to destroy the country and remake it into their image of what the US should be.

He won’t. He keeps power by pandering to the whackos as much as he possibly can, so that he has just enough street cred to say “no” to them when it matters, like when they want to destroy the global economy by defaulting on the national debt. If you are a swarthy furriner, and you ain’t Israeli, the House GOP hates you.

The far right has always been fascist. What is new is that the GOP mainstream is becoming increasingly proto-fascist in several ways, most notably in its attempt to get the politics of scapegoating accepted in the US vs. Muslims and LGBTQ people.

I totally despise what’s being done in this country by these kinds of cowards who can’t arrest someone without resorting to the ultimate violence.

And getting away with it time after time seems to give them some kind of go ahead to even escalate further. The attitude of the American public seems to be for them to use anything to capture “criminals” because most people just assume that if a cop is after you, you’ve done something wrong, whether or not you have. Especially if you’re a minority or poor.

If we don’t start demanding that cops defuse these situations and actually do real police work without resorting to these kinds of tactics, then all of us lose.

The AIDS thing yes, mostly. The prescription plan was unfunded, and could have been so much better. For example, the VA can negotiate for lower prices, but not Medicare.

not really since it was really designed to stop the flow of drugs from canada where the prices are half that of american prices for the same drugs, when under patent

the ‘tell’ is that the bush prescription drug benefit law explicitly forbids the u.s. government to negotiate the price of the drugs provided under the plan

it’s the ‘preserve high profits for prescription drugs’ bill

For a while, Tim Pawlenty instituted a program where Minnesotans could import prescription meds from Canada. First time I tried to use it, the meds were confiscated by the Dept. of Homeland Security. When I talked to someone at the state, they told me that confiscations were rare so try it again. I got another letter from DHS very quickly telling me they’d confiscated the meds again. The quick turnaround clued me in that the DHS already had my info on file. Pissed the hell out of me and I didn’t try it again. This was probably back around 2013.

I thought it looked big (and unspotted) for a bobcat. And my biologist brother says the first thing to look at when IDing wildlife is range…

That’s just it… the range for them now is everglades and very southwest end of Florida. That park is way north and east coast, about 150 miles from what would be their normal range. OTOH, Panthers do spread out a great distance from each other (in part to avoid interbreeding), so it’s not impossible.

By “salient,” Segal means “effective.” Science denial isn’t working any more.

What can work — what have worked, historically — are apocalyptic warnings about the high cost of government action. That is the GOP’s native territory. It’s a story everyone involved in the right-wing coalition understands instinctively. It is core to their identity.

Right, because the fingerprints are only preserved if you violate the integrity of a crime scene.

Is “Get Rand Paul out of the Senate… elect him President” one of the failed campaign slogans?

Last week a wolf caught a salmon…

Driving home the other day, one of those ran across the road in front of me. A bobcat, that is, not a shark!

My thoughts: “Deer? Too small. Dog? Funny looking dog. Short tail…BOBCAT!”

107 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge  Apr 8, 2015 3:28:06pm

We’ve got an even bigger problem in this country in that a lot of the right wing—can I say 27% of the population?—have a…unique understanding of “crime”.

For them, crime is crime. Be it murder, shoplifting, selling loosies, walking through the wrong neighborhood: It’s all the same. And crime being crime, the death penalty is a perfectly legitimate outcome.

Fortunately, we have people authorized to perform as judge, jury, and executioner on the spur of the moment when they see (or suspect) a crime. Nothing they do can possibly be questioned.

The right wing makes this jibe with their anti-government beliefs and paranoid fear of persecution by inventing boogeymen who don’t, you know…actually exist…to perform this oppression. Jack-booted thugs in black helicopters and the like. Actual cops can do no wrong, however.

Of course, it is convenient that god has made it easier to tell a crimer when you see him by inflicting the Mark of Cain (Curse of Ham?) on those who need executing, so they can be distinguished at a glance.

Elected pols from foreign countries aren’t going to be kept out no matter how repugnant. You have to sink to Pol Pot/ Fidel Castro / Idi Amin level to get barred here.

From his wiki:

Geert Wilders (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈ☾ːrt ˈʋɪldərs], born 6 September 1963) is a Dutch politician and the founder and leader of the Party for Freedom (Partij voor de Vrijheid - PVV) which currently is the fourth-largest party in the Dutch parliament.[1][2] Wilders is the Parliamentary group leader of his party in the Dutch House of Representatives. In the formation in 2010 of the Rutte cabinet, a minority cabinet of VVD and CDA, he actively participated in the negotiations, resulting in a “support agreement” (gedoogakkoord) between the PVV and these parties, but withdrew his support in April 2012, citing disagreements with the cabinet on proposed budget cuts.[3] Wilders is best known for his criticism of Islam, summing up his views by saying, “I don’t hate Muslims, I hate Islam”.[4] Wilders’ views regarding Islam have made him a controversial figure in the Netherlands and abroad.
