Daredevil Volume 1, Issue 13: “The Secret of Ka-Zar’s Origin!”

Also starring Maa-Gor the man-ape
Arts • Views: 29,443

The issue following Daredevil #12, published in February 1966, sported a beautiful cover by the late great Jack Kirby, who also shared pencilling credit with John Romita Sr. for the whole issue.

This one features the origin story of loincloth aficionado Ka-Zar, who (shockingly!) turns out to be the brother of the Plunderer, that pirate with the ray gun on the previous issue’s cover.

You won’t believe how the cops are spinning this latest killing of a suspect.

Video released of deadly shooting in Tulsa after police chase

kfor.com

WTF? Not in their “normal states of mind”? Sounds as though police training needs a major, major overhaul.

“The reserve deputy who shot a suspect with his firearm rather than his stun gun, and another deputy who can be heard cursing at the suspect after he was shot, were not in their normal states of mind because of the elevated stress of apprehending the suspect, according to a Tulsa, Oklahoma, investigator.

(snip)

“Clark was emphatic that Bates had done nothing criminally wrong and went so far as to say the reserve deputy was a victim.

“Reserve Deputy Bates did not commit a crime. Reserve Deputy Bates was a victim, a true victim of slip and capture,” he said. “There’s no other determination I could come to.” More

The Comics Code Authority was actually an industry group that was formed in 1954 to avoid having governmental oversight, because religious fanatics were freaking out about graphic violence and sexual content in comics like the EC line. The panic was apparently started with a book by a German psychologist, Seduction of the Innocent, that blamed comic books for juvenile delinquency.

We’re still seeing these kinds of idiotic religion-based panic attacks in America today.

He must have been totally stunned when he was charged with murder.

Okay, call me crazy, but haven’t we been told time and again that cops are uniquely trained to handle the stress of these situations and that’s why we can rely upon them to make the “right call” when the situation calls for it? If the stress of the situation was too much for the deputy involved, then perhaps he needs to be put on permanent desk duty. As for the “reserve” fucker, I hope whatever he donated to be allowed to play cop was worth it, because he’s gonna be paying out the ass when the family sues him for wrongful death.

Yes, the worry was that horror and true crime would come to rule comicdom so the Christians banished the demons, and the prudes among them forbid the true crime angle. We see the modern iterations of those fascinations with shows like NCIS and Bones at dinner that typically start out with a grisly and/or nude corpse.

I must say that cover is just primo, the inks are like new.

I believe the CCA is officially kaput. Even if you’re not a comics geek, reading through their stringent guidelines is good for a laugh or SMH or both. IIRC, there was something about werewolf stories being forbidden, or something crazy like that.

The guy Clark quotes extensively is Bill Lewinski of Force Science Institute.

POLICE LOVE LEWINSKI. He has been named to the National Commission on Law Enforcement Integrity and was the keynote speaker last month at the Trexpo Law Enforcement Exposition in Long Beach.

That should come as no surprise; as an expert witness in nearly 100 cases, Lewinski always supports the use of force and always defends police when they are accused of overstepping their bounds.

“This is a guy who’s firmly in the category of junk science,” says Paul Wright, the founder and editor of Prison Legal News, who has tracked Lewinski’s career.

In most cases, Lewinski is called upon to present a scientific-sounding justification for what looks on its face unjustifiable.

citypages.com

18 Nyet  Apr 12, 2015 4:19:06pm
Like the previous code, the CCA prohibited the presentation of “policemen, judges, government officials, and respected institutions … in such a way as to create disrespect for established authority.” But it added the requirements that “in every instance good shall triumph over evil” and discouraged “instances of law enforcement officers dying as a result of a criminal’s activities.”

I believe the ‘I accidentally pulled my gun when I meant taser’ was a somewhat successful defense used in the Oscar Grant shooting. Successful in that the shooter only got two years for killing a subdued victim. And since the shooter is 73, what do you think they are going to do?

And that article really sets a great tone with phrases like:

Harris — a possibly PCP-addled felon

Bates arrived with a pepper spray gun in hand.

(uh, apparently it was NOT a pepper spray gun)

Clark was emphatic that Bates had done nothing criminally wrong and went so far as to say the reserve deputy was a victim.

Clark defended the officer’s language, saying the deputy experienced auditory exclusion, never heard the gunshot

(now that there is some serious bullshit)

It’s very upsetting when you think you are going to have to take someone’s life and this deputy, one of the involved deputies, was upset,” he said.

(not nearly as upsetting as it must be to be the person shot dead, motherfucker.)

As Harris fled, police worried he might still be armed because he ran with his right forearm pressed against his hip, “consistent with trying to maintain control of a gun,” Clark said, adding that no gun was found when Harris was searched after the chase.

Surprise, surprise.

The gun discharges.

(Apparently, it’s a magic gun that discharges all by itself.)

I’m a few episodes ahead of you, but I have to agree. Daredevil wasn’t my absolute favorite Marvel comic but it was one that I always made sure to read every issue and crossover. I am really enjoying how Kingpin/Fisk is being portrayed (both in the writing and the acting) in the Netflix series.

With an extremely short list of exceptions that most certainly does not include “The Avengers”, I haven’t been very impressed with the Marvel adaptations.

I would still like to see a non-terrible Silver Surfer movie, but I’m not sure it’s possible to make one.

His mind slid away into the labyrinthine world of doublethink. To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again: and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself. That was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word ‘doublethink’ involved the use of doublethink.

59 freetoken  Apr 12, 2015 7:13:42pm

Speaking of doublethink, I just came across this article from Bloomberg today, which not only embodies doublethink, but all sorts of misdirection and, basically, garbage substituting for any real insight:
