Raw Video Shows Cops Shoot, Kill Subdued Man, Mock Him While He Lay Dying

Yet another extrajudicial execution from a police force. In this case the suspect was shot by a reserve volunteer officer of 73 years of age who confused his taser with a gun. This comes from the mentality that some police have that anyone who runs gets tased, beat down, or killed even after they stop resisting or running. Accidental or not I still have lots of questions about this one.

YouTube

The final tragic moments of Eric Harris’s life were caught on video, as well as the sociopathic nature of law enforcement. Harris was accidently shot by a reserve deputy, apparently meaning to taser him, while on the ground being subdued by other officers.

“He shot me! He shot me, man. Oh, my god. I’m losing my breath.”
To which an officer gives a response that can only be described as sociopathic, telling the dying Harris, “Fuck your breath! Shut the fuck up!”
Harris can be seen on the video running from police as the officer with the body cam gives chase, catching and taking Harris to the ground. Once on the ground the officer can be heard telling Harris, “Roll on your stomach now.”

Reserve officer Robert Bates, 73, can be heard yelling “Tazer! Tazer!” as if to inform the other officer that he was about to use his stun gun on Harris, when suddenly a gunshot rings out.

“I shot him!” the stunned reserve officer says, as he drops his gun onto the ground. “I’m sorry.”

When my wife and I were training and competing in a tactical shooting sport we took advantage of all kinds of training and what would appear to be really odd tests. Many were from advanced skills tests done live fire against the clock for added stress. Frankly borrowed tests from SWAT and entry team squads. Also people yelling loud noises etc. Gotta say the kinds of mistakes that were made by even experienced students or instructors was compelling evidence for symptoms. Symptoms of stress like a massive adrenaline dump, tunnel vision, shaking, reduced fine motor control, Inured to pain. and more. Impaired Judgement .
Mistaking a gun for a taser looks and sounds more unlikely than one might think. All of this is exacerbated by a pursuit. By the understanding the public is at risk right that second. By way of the adrenaline and our ancient fight/flight physiology.

I guess my point is we have to keep a open mind and sharp understanding of the evidence at shootings before we judge. Heroism, justified shoot, mistaken, mishaps and malice are all possibilities.

Exactly why 73 yr old volunteers don’t need to tag along with cops, and if they do they need to be unarmed.

Digby:

They don’t like it when people don’t listen to them, and things can quickly become violent when people don’t follow their orders.”

Nice little civil rights you have there. Be a shame if anything happened to them.
…….
…the lack of accountability, endorsed by the public, explains why these incidents continue to happen. The public seems to think that cops should be allowed to beat, torture and shoot people without repercussion. One assumes they wouldn’t feel that way if it happened to them but most people seem to think it won’t.”

Why do people run from the cops?

Maybe they’re scared some low life sack of shit will kill them and be able to hide it behind a badge.

The reserve Tulsa County Sheriff’s deputy who fatally shot and killed a man last week when he thought he had pulled his Taser, is part of a group of wealthy donors who make large contributions to the department for the privilege of playing police officer.

According to Tulsa World, Robert Bates, 73, who made the fatal mistake that cost a man his life, is a local insurance company executive who has donated multiple vehicles, weapons, and stun guns to the Sheriff’s Office since becoming a reserve deputy in 2008.

And if/when you read the “exonerating” explanation by the Tulsa Sergeant “expert,” just remember that he relies heavily on this guy’s pseudo-science:

Bill Lewinski defends cops accused of excessive force

…as an expert witness in nearly 100 cases, Lewinski always supports the use of force and always defends police when they are accused of overstepping their bounds…

Articles in the newsletter have included everything from research suggesting that a suspect’s level of aggressiveness can be determined by the relative length of his index and middle fingers to instructions on proper procedures for investigating police shootings. The latter article recommends that officers who have shot someone not be required to make a written statement, or that if they must, that they do so only after being allowed to walk around the scene of the shooting with a lawyer and union representative.

“In that case, and in other cases where I’ve dealt with Lewinski, he’s called to the stand to put a scientific gloss on an argument that has no scientific basis,” Bennett says. “He shows up, he’s a university professor, he’s got a Ph.D., he’s attached to this important-sounding institute. But there isn’t actually any science there.

re: #16 Mich-again

There is no such thing as a gun accident.

There are screwups. Does it really seem probably that this guy, knowing he was on camera, deliberately drew his gun so as to be able to kill the guy and call it an accident?

This can’t work out well for him. If he thought about it even a moment, it would surely have occurred to him that it wouldn’t.

He made several mistakes, beginning with taking on those duties at his age and with his lack of training and culminating in drawing the wrong weapon. The department made more mistakes, such as taking him on and arming him, and then it compounded them with police misconduct.

But the shooting itself can hardly have been the plan all along.

20 Mich-again  Apr 12, 2015 9:29:56pm

re: #19 lostlakehiker

A screwup is not the same thing as an accident. Calling it an accident makes it blameless, like it was an act of god. But carelessness is not the same thing as an accident.

Auditory exclusion is technobabble for “selective listening.” Parents and teachers of small children are familiar with this syndrome. Police officers should be held to a higher standard than 7-year-olds.

So, this 73 yr old basically got what he wanted—license to play cop—and didn’t even really have to train for it like a career officer. I expect he spent time at the gun range, but otherwise, according to another report I linked yesterday, he was at the top of the reserve pile and had donated a lot of materiel to the Sheriff’s Dept such as ammo, tasers, vests, etc. Probably saw himself as a real Sheriff than a mere volunteer deputy, even by the paid deputies who saw him as their benefactor as well. I expect he was given a wide berth.

The thing about reserves is that because they mostly receive no pay as volunteers and more often than not have to pay for their own uniforms, weapons, protective gear, etc, they often see themselves as “special” anyway, often more gung ho than the schlubs who get a regular paycheck (we put our lives on the line for free! one site claims). They can exert “authority” over others and “clean up the streets”, even if they’re simply used as a uniformed presence at events, in ride-alongs, and are auxiliary to FT, paid LE. Depending on the venue, they may receive a modicum of training, but never as much as a FT officer, and duties plus hours worked can vary.

A look at the TCSO reserve page offers no info about qualifications or training for reserve officers. tcso.org

Interesting piece on reserves at Police One, also, which calls them “extreme volunteers” (ouch!). Even some career cops don’t like them much, it seems. policeone.com

This is incredible, just incredible, so horribly wrong and sad. She deserved treatment in a mental health facility, not jail, and might still be alive otherwise.

Fairfax jail inmate in Taser death was shackled

washingtonpost.com

“A mentally ill woman who died after a stun gun was used on her at the Fairfax County jail in February was restrained with handcuffs behind her back, leg shackles and a mask when a sheriff’s deputy shocked her four times, incident reports obtained by The Washington Post show.

“Natasha McKenna initially cooperated with deputies, placed her hands through her cell door food slot and agreed to be handcuffed, the reports show. But McKenna, whose deteriorating mental state had caused Fairfax to seek help for her, then began trying to fight her way out of the cuffs, repeatedly screaming, “You promised you wouldn’t hurt me!” the reports show.

“Then, six members of the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team, dressed in white full-body biohazard suits and gas masks, arrived and placed a wildly struggling 130-pound McKenna into full restraints, their reports state. But when McKenna wouldn’t bend her knees so she could be placed into a wheeled restraint chair, a lieutenant delivered four 50,000-volt shocks from the Taser, enabling the other deputies to strap her into the chair, the reports show.” More

This story from Friday showed up on my Facebook feed this morning:

Milledgeville Pharmacist Refuses to Fill Prescription for Miscarriage Patient

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.— Brittany Cartrett recently learned some bad news from her doctor about her pregnancy. She miscarried around five or six weeks along.

“So we made the decision to not do a D&C and to get a medicine. So he said I’m going to give you this medicine, you’ll take it, and it will help you to pass naturally so that you don’t have to go the more invasive route”, said Brittany Cartrett.

The doctor’s office called the Milledgeville Walmart to fill the prescription but they were told no and they were not given a reason.

snip

The drug in question is Misoprostol, which can also used to induce abortions.

WGXA’s Chace Abrose spoke off camera to Wal-Mart pharmacist Sandip Patel who said he was aware of the situation and also said that pharmacists have the ability to turn down prescriptions at their own discretion.

Mercer University Law Professor Zac Buck verified that the ability to turn down prescriptions based on personal beliefs has been a law in Georgia for about 15 years.

WGXA also contacted Brian Nick at Walmart’s corporate office who stated, “Our pharmacists fill prescriptions on a case by case basis every day in our stores throughout the country and we encourage them to exercise their professional judgment in doing so”.

Meanwhile, in China, these women were protesting public harassment against women in public places, which sounds as though it is deeply imbedded in Chinese society.

Despite the Communist Party’s lip service to women holding up half the sky, the Party has not succeeded in dispelling thousands of years of cultural bias against women. China is approximately where the USA was in the 1950s wrt gender equality and sexism.

Well, happening here, also, as a lot of men pay lip service to “equality” when all they want is a woman generating income for them, the rest of the ideals of equality being tossed like yesterday’s stale pastries.

re: #75 Backwoods_Sleuth

This story from China is somewhat related, and anyway I need to get it off my chest.

Sometime ago, I posted here and on my blog about one of my former Chinese students, Carla Wu, who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at age 23. She underwent surgery and pretty aggressive chemo, and that seemed to do the trick. She and her fiance made the decision last fall to have a baby and hold their wedding party in his hometown on Jan 1, and her hometown a few days after the Chinese New Year.

She was fine on Jan. 1, but by late February was feeling weaker and the pain in her leg gradually returned. When I spoke with her last month, she was still pregnant but the pain had spread to her lower back. The doctors suspect the cancer had returned and was now in her kidneys. They were reluctant to pursue any surgery, radiation or chemo until then, to protect the child.

Now they have no choice. Carla is in constant pain almost everywhere in her body, and to save the mother, they will remove the fetus, which is still too undeveloped to be viable. It’s a horrible choice, but it will be done this week. Then, they will try to save the mother.

Were Carla living in one of the US states that have passed strict anti-abortion laws, she and her doctors would be charged as felons and brought to trial. Those laws would put the mother at risk of dying a truly horrible death — Carla’s already reached the maximum pain killer dosage — to save a fetus that could not survive even in an incubator at this point (second trimester).

China is not a perfect place by any measure, but at least in this respect they are right. Government should not be interfering in what is a medical and familial decision.

Maybe everybody should have body cameras—on the model of Russian dash cameras. If somebody winds up dead at the hands of the cops and their body camera turns up missing or somehow disabled, that would constitute an admission of first-degree murder. Too bad it’s come to this, but something has to be done.

He asked us what countries did we visit and we said “Netherlands, Czech Republic, Israel”

He said “Did you buy any olive wood carvings?”

I said we didn’t, even though I have bought olive wood tchotchkas on previous visits.

He said that olive wood may have parasites.

Well we got home and I was unpacking all the tchotchkas and I found that I actually did have an olive wood tchotchka that I forgot about when we were going through customs. It was a part of a random batch of tchotchkas that I bought for co-workers.

This is the man who is vigorously campaigning to be Senate Minority Leader. Harry Reid endorsed him for the job. Here’s his latest move on the Iran nuclear deal:

After holding his tongue last week upon announcement of the framework, Schumer signaled this week he will support legislation led by Senate Foreign Relations Chair Bob Corker (R-TN) to ensure congressional review of any deal and give Congress the chance to block it. Corker intends to take up the bill next Tuesday and approve it in committee, potentially with amendments.

If he is elected Minority Leader I will officially give up on the Democratic party and register “No party preference.”

LOL. We spent so much money in Mexico buying things. My dad and I both checked large empty suitcases to bring our stuff back and we still ended up having to do a third bag just to get it all home.

I packed a huge suitcase the size of a refrigerator with stuff for my daughter & grandkids.

Then for the return trip I just packed it with the laundry bag full of our dirty clothes LOL.

Back when I was in HS, my Dad and I helped a friend of his move out to Kansas from CA. On the way back, we hired a small U-Haul truck and hit a bunch of antique shows, yard sales, and any place else that looked interesting.

I hope to dog none of that stuff was made in China. I reflexively check labels now just for that reason. No point in bringing Chinese-made souvenirs to friends in China, y’know.

I noticed that some souvenirs that I saw at Israeli and Amsterdam souvenir stands were “made in China” but all the stuff in Prague was proudly labeled “Made in Czech Republic”

Oh, no. We went to the wood carving villages and saw them actually working on the carvings. Some of the ones we bought from were actually in a Mexican Folk Art book as some of the best for a particular type of art. We did the same thing with the weavers. We bought some rugs from a famous weaving family and got to see their operation. They also fed us a fantastic lunch. We had actually met the head of the family in Santa Fe and I attended a dye workshop that he put on for us at the living history museum where I volunteer. We went with a small group led by a buyer of Mexican folk art for the past 30 years. He and his wife know everyone and everything it seems. We got to visit some great archeological sites as well.

Reserve officers. Controversial in and outside of departments.

Obdi made a good point above in concept. Yet hate to toss the good with the bad right? Maybe just have a strict entry protocol/training/reviews system. LAPD provides one large scale example. I think most who read that would find it a confidence builder at least in this city.

Being a reserve officer is not the same necessarily as going on patrol, carrying a gun and full blown arrest credential. Here in LA (maybe state laws apply) there are three levels of reserve officer.

I have to wonder how many good and proper patrols, encounters and arrests have been made by reserve officers? OTOH We have this one example of a really older guy, and another example of a younger trained up serving officer that testified he made the same mistake. Grabbed a gun thinking Taser.

AddictingInfo is marginally reliable as a news source, and the post cited is fearmongering on the level of UpChuck’s and Dim Jim’s sites. That said, the writer does have a point, but the blockchain — the Bitcoin shared ledger — records all transactions. If Paul’s fundraising is transparent and its receiving addresses are made public (big ifs, I know), it would be possible to monitor those addresses for large donations. We wouldn’t know where the donations came from, of course, but at least we’d know how much and when.

Supposedly, it’s possible to track IP addresses on the blockchain, but I may have heard that incorrectly.

Years ago, while waiting for surgery, the doctor asked how I was doing. As usual, it was about 7am and I had been fasting (no coffee or cigarettes) since the night before. They’ve changed the way they measure blood pressure since then, so I can’t remember the exact number, but my blood pressure was barely registering.

I told the doctor what it was and his eyes got really large and said, “maybe you should smoke a cigarette!”

I 1/2 way thought he was serious. Of course, they can adjust blood pressure up while in surgery much easier than they can lower it. So all was well.

Try eBay, that’s where I got mine. You can usually pick up a small one for starting around $15-$20. As with most things, as the quality goes up so does the price. The bigger and/or really exquisite ones can cost in the hundreds (and sometimes even thousands) of dollars.

However eBay is great if you want to buy designer tchotchkas like Swarovski, Herend, Lalique, etc. because it’s much cheaper than at the shops.

When I was growing up, there were actually dead bodies in my freezer. If we had a babysitter who was looking for ice cream, it always freaked them out to find baggies full of frozen bats. LOL.

My dad is a small mammal expert, bats and rodents in particular. At the time, he was doing some sort of experimenting with the bats. They were basically dried out, then put on a cookie sheet in the oven to make sure there was no moisture, then we ground them up in a molcajete. That was then put through a machine that told all sorts of things about the physiology of the bat. I was only in 3rd or 4th grade, so I don’t remember what all the machine told them, but I clearly remember grinding up dead bats.

Speaking of, Charles was trying to identify a bird the other night when I was lurking, so I went off in search of California beach/coastal birds. I didn’t find the one in his photo, but I found some other useful bird stuff:

WhatBird - North American birds only. You can do a step-by-step visual search, use their bird expert wizard, or browse based on various attributes.

For the Left Coast lizards in Cali who are bird watchers/photographers:

Pocket Guide to Beach Birds of California (PDF) - Eighty-three page book, full-color photos

Guide to the Marine Birds of Zuma Beach (PDF) - Twenty-three pages with full-color photos. Not as slick as the one above, but lots of useful info for identifying birds.

Yes, absolutely. That’s why I called it a screwup rather than an accident. Screwups are what we call it when an accident that is obviously waiting to happen happens. It’s a screwup because somebody should have seen it coming.

Failure to systematically close the door to foreseeable “accidents” is dereliction of duty.

re: #339 Lord Of The Pies

Wow, this dude is like the wingnut no one has ever heard of:

(all emphasis mine)

Health Care

My family lost our health insurance plan because of Obamacare. I will work tirelessly to repeal Obamacare and replace it with healthcare reform that moves towards less government control and more individual empowerment.

Rather than increase government spending and control, we need to address the root causes of poor health. This begins with the fact every American adult is responsible for their own health. Healthcare is a service we all need, it is best provided through voluntary and mutually beneficial market exchanges. My reform plan will be financially responsible. It will provide you with the freedom to choose the doctors and the health care services that best suit your own unique set of lifestyle choices.

Immigration

For the past four years, it has been my contention that illegal immigration is the biggest issue we face as a nation. We do not need immigration reform, we need immigration enforcement.

Illegal immigration affects every major issue America faces: healthcare costs, education costs, election fraud, crime, terrorism, the spread of infectious diseases, welfare, tax fraud, congestion, jobs… the list is endless. I will put a stop to illegal immigration conclusively.Politicians, especially Presidential candidates, fail to recognize the precise problem. We must cut off the incentive to illegally enter the US. This means we must cut off the job magnet. To do this, we must levy employers who hire illegal aliens, and prosecute repeat offenders. We must commence deportation proceedings immediately, beginning with those people who have recently entered our country illegally.

Double fencing and hi-tech equipment will work at the border high-traffic areas, as long as there is a will to stop the flow of illegal activity at the border. Currently, there is no will. Thus, all the fencing and technology we have in place today is nothing but window dressing, and a huge waste of tax dollars.

Abortion

We have to approach the abortion issue with care and love. Many young girls are scared, they feel there is no place to turn. It is important to try to understand the emotional state of young women seeking an abortion. They are misinformed about adoption and they are unaware of the assistance that awaits them. We have to save lives through education.

I am passionate about this issue and how it needs to be addressed. Conservatives will alienate voters if we do not convey love, understanding and concern. Education, education, education. It’s the answer to saving lives. I back my words with facts: The numbers are changing. For the last several years, polls show more people siding with the pro-life movement. I truly believe the shift has to do with the advent of new technology. We have to better educate our youngsters.

SSM

As a Catholic, I believe in traditional marriage. At the same time, I do not believe it is the role of the federal government to meddle in this area. I believe the matter should be turned over to the states.

I view Americans as one people regardless of their religious beliefs or sexual preferences.

Gun Rights

Guns do not kill people. People kill people. The Second Amendment right of Americans to keep and bear Arms is fundamental to a free society, which in turn ultimately depends on personal responsibility. Citizens must have the right to defend themselves, their families, and their property.

There are existing laws, and several proposed gun control laws, that do not correlate with decreased violence. Instead, they hamper the ability of law-abiding citizens to defend themselves and their families. Most gun-related murders are committed by gang members. In addition, incidents of mass violence, often perpetrated by severely mentally ill individuals, should not be used by policymakers as an opportunity to restrict constitutional rights.

A Texas state representative is refusing to meet with the constituents who will be the most impacted by legislation she has proposed.

State Rep. Molly White (R-Belton) has proposed legislation that would allow businesses to refuse to serve customers on religious grounds. The first-year Republican lawmaker has also proposed legislation seeking to make the state’s ban on same-sex marriage immune from court rulings.

“Marriage is a Holy union of one man and one woman created and ordained by God. There is no other definition. As a Christian, I am guided by God’s Word,” she explained in a statement.

But White’s staff has said trying to discuss the issues with her “would be a waste of time.”

The Temple Daily Telegram reported last week that White’s staff had initially greeted Frank Carlson of Equality Texas, before turning him away upon learning who he represented.

Her staff told Carlson, who works on behalf of the largest LGBT rights organization in Texas, to “drop off your literature and leave.” White’s staff informed Carlson that the lawmaker “is against anything LGBT.”

This woman is not a Christian.

Yes, it’s going to be a crazy campaign. Even the primaries. Even within primary groups if you know what I mean.

What’s sad is that no matter who is elected more than two billion dollars which would do a ton of good for any number of causes will go up in smoke.

Yes. But the scary part is that it’s not the Firebaggers I’m talking about. I don’t follow people like that. I’m talking about Obama supporters that hated Hillary Clinton and Pumas in 2008. I might also add that the Pumas aren’t helping either because they’re very aggressive about their Clinton support.

Jebus. Hello again. Think I’m done and everything’s up and running again.

Started with the Wimax failing to install and went downhill from there. Did a bad recovery and then it found some weird stuff on the HD during chkdsk. Then I managed to almost kill Windows with a bad recovery.

Fixed that and tried a million times to get the Wimax up and running until finally I uninstalled Malawarebytes and finally, finally it installed.

Not going to bother with Malawarebytes ever again. Free or not.

Anyway, here I am. Probably good to take a break from all the Hillary Clinton derangement on Twitter. Crikey they’re driving me nuts.

This is my life in a nutshell.

Plz to stop blowing up my inbox with your demands just for a few minutes. I’d like to catch my breath and maybe even order lunch. It would be nice.

Thanks,

Almost. Was reading some comment/rant by one guy who was calling it malware itself and didn’t understand. Guess I finally figured it out. Saw some file it created right at the time this mess started. The damn thing was still running in the background to a certain extent.

I use Malwarebytes Anti-malware all the time. I love it.

I do routinely disable MBam & Avast when I update & make sure new apps are on their exceptions lists.

BTW, the latest post at HillaryIs44 shows that its owner Alex Rodriguez is probably mentally ill. The phrase “BOW DOWN TO HILLARY BITCHBOYS” is repeated throughout, dozens of times, and then there’s this:

Donna Brazile and the rest of you bitches better BOW DOWN! NOTHING IS FORGIVEN! NOTHING IS FORGOTTEN! BOW DOWN BITCHES SO IT WILL BE EASIER TO CUT OFF YOUR HEADS!

Hillary and her husband, along with the PUMAs, were pretty nasty at times. Add in the shenanigans that she tried to pull with Florida’s delegation to the nominating convention and you had a pretty toxic mix of expediency-driven assholery.

They’re all free to battle it out. I’m not going to do it nor do I want to be around that craziness until the primaries end. Don’t want it. If liberal Twitter is going to be that kind of hellhole they can do it without me.

Yes, it’s one of the original PUMA sites and it’s been totally unhinged about Obama throughout the years, but it’s becoming even more unhinged now (I didn’t think it was possible). I don’t even want to imagine the cognitive dissonance going on in Alex Rodriguez’ head.

This is going to get crazy. Again. Wasn’t really exposed much to these people in 2008 save the few Republican Pumas we had at LGF and they were quite frankly rather strange.

Nah, that shit is real. I remember cataloging their derp and stupid back in 2008.

The owner of the site that I remember was a blogger named Alegre. They kicked up SUCH a shitstorm of whining about persecution of Hillary supporters over at DKos that I think they were personally banned by Kos.

I will never forget Alegre’s post calling for a blogger strike at the same time the very real Hollywood writer’s strike was going on. Oh man. The fastest way to piss off a bunch of professional writers is to equate your political blogging and your feelings of oppression because Kos isn’t bowing down to Hillary with the very real job losses and financial struggles of writers and workers in the entertainment industry at the time. It was a tsunami of vitriol.

Alegre was another famous PUMA, not from HI44 but from another one of those sites (forgot the name and don’t wish to search). She was around DKos too until banned.

I saw that this morning. Clearly someone didn’t tell Drake he was going to get kissed. His reaction was priceless.

He’s now trying to spin it as being disgusted by the taste of her lipstick, but come on. Who’s he trying to kid?
