In Which the Governor of Texas Tweets a Link to the Stupidest Man on the Internet

And people ask why I say the GOP has gone completely batshit
Wingnuts • Views: 37,519

Once in a while we get an absolutely perfect picture of how utterly deranged the Republican Party has become. Today’s picture of degradation comes from Greg Abbott, governor of Texas, who is actually tweeting a link to the Dumbest, Most Racist, Most Dishonest Man on the Internet… Jim Hoft. Yes, the blogger who frequently links to white supremacists, makes up stories out of thin air and hatred, and never corrects an error. The guy who originated the completely false story that Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson suffered serious facial fractures in a struggle with Michael Brown.

I’d better stop recounting Hoft’s crazy dishonest posts now, because I’ll be going on forever. He’s horrible beyond belief. And he’s the go-to blogger for the Republican governor of Texas.

(Hoft’s post is exactly as moronic as the title implies, of course.)

America is the best country in the world and all our freedoms are being taken away from us by a gay muslim communist dictator who spends all his time golfing while people are murdered in an ever-increasing spiral of violence that has absolutely nothing to do with how many guns there are.

Exhibit A of the typical Greg Abbott voter:

Dallas Woman Posts On Facebook “A Female Shouldn’t Be President”

“I believe in what I said,” she told Pickett. “There’s an old biblical sound reasoning why a woman shouldn’t be President.”
Here’s the full text of her post:
“If this happens - I am moving to Canada. There is NO need for her as she is not the right person to run our country - but more importantly a female shouldn’t be president. Let the haters begin … but with the hormones we have there is no way we should be able to start a war. Yes I run my own business and I love it and I am great at it BUT that is not the same as being the President, that should be left to a man, a good, strong, honorable man.”
Rios posted her opinion in opposition to Hillary Clinton’s announcement as a Presidential candidate for the 2016 election. But Rios went well well beyond a political position. She says a President should always be a man.

Canada? The country that had a female Prime Minister more than 20 years ago?

Rand is just as much of a pseudo-libertarian loon as his father. But he’s more of a Romney type weasel, trying to have it both ways. He wants to hold on to the kooks who loved his dad, but that’s clearly not enough to win the nomination. So he plays this game of going back and forth between sounding like Ron and sounding like Ted Cruz. I don’t think Rand has the brains or interpersonal skills (just look at his interviews) to pull off such an incredibly delicate balancing act.

At least Ron was upfront with his lunacy; basically he said, “Here are all my crazy ideas, take it or leave it.” When Rand gets confronted with his own inconvenient words, he becomes defensive and whiny, a petulant child who wants to make news with his antics, but never have to be held responsible. I don’t predict success for Rand, unless one defines it as staying in Congress long enough to run unsuccessfully for president for decades and still have a backup job.

One reason I would like to see Paul win the GOP nomination: It would bring a direct and very public confrontation with the conspiracy industry and affiliated elements of the loony right (ie the John Birch Society). The latter has flourished out in “flyover country,” nearly unnoticed by outsiders, for over 50 years. To me it is very obvious that JBS and the earlier isolationist conspiracism from which it derives, are the bedrock foundations of the current political right.

England, 1100s: English common law, a combination of Anglo-Saxon and Norman traditions, leads to the creation of coverture, which is the belief that married men and women are one financial entity. As such, married women cannot own property, run taverns or stores or sue in court. Those financial rights could be enjoyed, however, by widows and spinsters. Over time, coverture is corrupted into the view that women are property of their husbands.

From a graphic and what is best described as a “message” standpoint, there is a whole lot wrong with the HRC logo for 2016.

As one of the political cartoonists pointed out on Sunday, a logo that is a red arrow pointing to the right isn’t exactly the symbolism that a Democratic candidate wants to put forward. I might add that the two blue lines on the background having a more than passing resemblance to the WTC towers doesn’t help the image at all, either.

121 Belafon  Apr 13, 2015 7:15:28pm

re: #111 Charles Johnson

Reading through the article, they talk about it needing to have curves. She’s staying away from Clinton to differentiate herself from Bill. She could have possibly gone with a cursive H, though I’m curious if anyone has any idea what to do with it. Cursive is also become “old fashioned.” You don’t even get a curvy letter in her name until you get “over the Hill” (get it?).

Some years ago, my dad’s employer, Kraft Foods, tried one of those hoity-toity “rebranding” efforts from a marketing company. The entire effort was an EPIC FAIL and a rollback to the original branding was effected posthaste. Honestly, there are good marketers/graphic designers, but generally, if they’re approaching you, you should be suspicious.

Exactly. Illinois had an older law that specifically forbade recording cops, but it was struck down as unconstitutional. The Federal DOJ has been quite explicit about trying to educate local police that the public has the right to photograph and record cops on duty.

Again, the privacy interests that may justify banning audio recording are not limited to those that the Fourth Amendment secures against gov- ernmental intrusion. But the Illinois eavesdropping statute obliterates the distinction between private and nonprivate by criminalizing all nonconsensual audio recording regardless of whether the communication is private in any sense. 720 ILL. COMP. STAT. 5/14-1(d). If protecting privacy is the justification for this law, then the law must be more closely tailored to serve that interest in order to avoid trampling on speech and press rights.

Basically, if cops are in public saying shit that bystanders, lookie loos, passers by, whoever can hear, then it’s not private. Whatever expectation of privacy they might assert is meaningless unless they’ve taken reasonable measures to guarantee it. Such measures generally run along the lines of getting the hell off a public street, close whispering, moving into a closed squad car, etc. The onus is on the government servant to guard their conversations and the conduct they wish to be private against witness by an overtly present public, not upon outsiders to refrain from hearing, seeing, or recording what is plainly being said and done on the public’s dime.

re: #205 teleskiguy

With that, Rwanda is still hugely sexist:

theguardian.com

But recent reports hint at a darker picture behind the success stories. According to the government’s 2010 demographic and health survey, two in five women reported suffering physical violence at least once since they were 15. One in five had experienced sexual violence, most at the hands of their husbands.

A 2011 report from the Rwandan Men’s Resource Centre said 57% of women questioned had experienced violence from a partner, while 32% of women had been raped by their husbands - a crime admitted by only 4% of men. And while, according to UN figures, the number of people living in poverty has fallen from 56.7% in 2006 to 44.9% in 2011, in rural areas the poorest citizens tend to be women, often genocide survivors.

207 Nyet  Apr 13, 2015 9:53:38pm

210 Nyet  Apr 13, 2015 10:00:57pm

Then there are the paradoxical oppressed oppressors. Meet the TERFs.

I will not call a male “she”; thirty-two years of suffering in this androcentric society, and of surviving, have earned me the title “woman”; one walk down the street by a male transvestite, five minutes of his being hassled (which he may enjoy), and then he dares, he dares to think he understands our pain? No, in our mothers’ names and in our own, we must not call him sister.

Been watching Flame and Citron on Netflix. This is a much discussed Danish movie about anti-Nazi resistance assassins in World War 2. Harrowing stuff, an unflinching examination of the moral ambiguity of war even when the justice of the cause is beyond question. The two killers, though ruthless and efficient, are human and they react like humans.

When asked if she thought the sexual advances her son mentioned in some way excused his actions, Debbie Stancil responded, “I need to stop. I’m feeling sick.”

The chipping away at Obama’s signature legislative successes will continue until the Democratic party gets its shit together and retakes Congress. The Republicans are willing to attach their agenda to must-pass legislation and any president that we Democrats elect will have to sign off on it. That is very bad because it gives the Republicans plenty of cover if our supine media even bothers to call them on screwing their own constituents.

Why do Republicans hate consumers?

Although it’s probably way too meta, I’ve concluded that most Republicans hate their constituents. They despise the drooling masses and envy the Democrats for having the votes of the educated. They know that they’re nothing more than leg-breakers working for loan sharks and it galls them that no one appreciates their intellectual prowess.

To do all that as you speculate, I would think you would also have to have a bit of self hate too. Surely a don’t care attitude is needed in the least.

And then, when you look at the approval ratings of Congress and the GOP itself, the drooling masses don’t seem to like them in return.

A good bigot does not need context. Pffft. Context is for wimps!

Maybe you do not have a feel for how easily that word comes from bigots in this country. All they need for context is an African American. It does not matter what the African American is doing, how good a person they are, etc. Had he let that slip out completely it would have seemed natural for him and it would have been natural for many bigot ears to accept it.

Dear Gwyneth,

I have lived on $29/week. I did it while I was unemployed. I never, ever bought limes, much less seven of them. Get a fucking clue.

No love,
Me

On a side note, the advantage of having a Mexican meat market near my house is that they would have chicken legs for $.59/lb and chicken quarters for $.89/lb every week. I’d stock up on chicken, then spend the rest on staples like veggies, rice, and beans. Some of the chicken went into a pot for a massive amount of soup. The rest went into the freezer and got parsed out for meals. Living on $29/week for food CAN be done, but you’d better have some basic cooking skills and a tolerance for eating the same thing day after day after day until money improves.

381 blueraven  Apr 14, 2015 9:35:39am

For 29 dollars I could buy a pretty big package of chicken thighs, white rice, frozen veggies for a chicken/rice meal that would probably feed a family of 4 for two days. Then maybe ground beef or sausage, a big bag of potatoes, milk, bread, eggs, cheese and dried beans.

I’m grateful that I’m a farmer who raises an abundance of fruit and veg, have mad canning/freezing/food preservation skills, raise chickens, and own a forest full of wild game and tasty wild foodstuffs. The farm pond has been repaired, so we’re looking forward to having that re-stocked.
And there’s always the huge crawdad population here along with an abundance of sassafras trees (to make file powder) so gumbo can be on the menu as well!

I had to sink a random archaeo test pit up in Carter County. The diceroll gave me a meter square with several sassafras saplings. Hard digging, but it kept us in tea for the winter.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everybody run!!

Just saw this at freep.

During the course of a joint operation last week, Mexican Army and federal law enforcement officials discovered documents in Arabic and Urdu, as well as “plans” of Fort Bliss - the sprawling military installation that houses the US Army’s 1st Armored Division. Muslim prayer rugs were recovered with the documents during the operation.

Yep, prayer rugs and Arabic or Urdu “documents,” the multiple smoking guns of ISIS. Too bad they can’t produce a translation of these damning documents, for example:
“Dear son,
Glad you made it okay. When you get to Dallas, look up your cousin Faris. He thinks he can get you a job at the sandwich shop where he works.
Love,
Mom”
They might have maps (not “plans”) of Fort Bliss for any number of reasons, locating a nearby relative, hoping to land a grounds maintenance gig, etc..

The freepers have a bumper crop of derp today. I’ll probably take a walk and wait for it to ripen before post posting more.

A while back I saw where Gwyneth had said that she would rather die than feed her children cup-o’-soup. That’s fine for her, and I’m not crazy about the stuff myself. Nevertheless it is a top item at the food pantry at our church, which provides emergency supplies to people who can’t get to the food bank right away. The pantry managers always include it when people ask for advice on what to donate. The reason is that it requires no more preparation facilities than a source of warm water and it is therefore very popular with homeless people.

My mom volunteers teaching people in single-residency hotels in San Francisco how to cook healthy meals on hot plates and microwaves, since they don’t have kitchens. She tries to get them to split the middle between what they generally eat—prepared food, at the best—and healthy food. So, use cop of noodles as the base, and add some fresh broccoli, sugar snap peas, and bamboo shoots.

No. They did exactly the right thing. The “cult of Victory” allows Putin and his cronies to excuse their crimes (in Ukraine and elsewhere) as “defending the Victory and memory”. The parade has become but an empty ceremony given the current context, when Putin’s Russia attacked its neighbor, annexed a part of its territory and provoked a bloody war in another part. This is too similar to what Hitler once did. Standing together with Putin overlooking the Russian tanks that may have taken part in that war would have been inexcusable. This is no longer purely about memory, this is about the resurgent Russian “might”, or, in practical terms, about doing anything you want because you’re “the Victor”.

Besides, Russia is not the same as USSR, it doesn’t own the Victory. Maybe these heads of states should go to Ukraine instead ;)

PS: This, however, is appropriate:

But Merkel has decided not to completely ignore the occasion. Die Zeit reports that she will instead travel to Moscow on May 10th to visit The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier at the wall of the Kremlin with Putin.

The collapse this year is the latest in a series of alarming die-offs, sicknesses and population declines in the ocean ecosystem along the West Coast. Anchovies, which thrive in cold water, have also declined over the past decade due largely to fluctuating ocean temperatures and a lack of zooplankton, their food of choice.

The number of herring seen in San Francisco Bay has fluctuated wildly, reaching a historic low in 2009.

Record numbers of starving sea lions have recently been washing up on beaches in California because there aren’t enough sardines and anchovies for pups to eat. Fisheries scientists estimate that 70 percent of sea lion pups will die this year due to a lack of food.

Sick pelicans

Brown pelicans, too, have suffered from mass reproductive failures and are turning up sick and dead in California and Oregon. A 2010 study by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Geological Survey and other scientific organizations found that many of the starving and emaciated pelicans are eating worms and other prey inconsistent with their normal diet of anchovies and sardines.

Strange diseases have also been proliferating in the sea. Large numbers of sea lions have recently been found convulsing with seizures caused by a neurotoxin found in algae blooms or red tides. The blooms suddenly proliferate for unknown reasons, cover large areas and infuse shellfish, mussels, anchovies, sardines and other filter feeders with toxins that are then consumed by sea lions.

One in which countries like Japan that depend on the sea to feed their population starve, and either attack China to seize land, or have a massive die-back until the land in Japan can support the remaining people.

We didn’t have to back ourselves into a corner, but a lot of people believe that they can take whatever they want, and ruin the commons for us all via over-fishing and pollution. Some of these people also see endless war as a benefit, so don’t care that they create desperation.

It was mostly small stuff that would happen in the hotel or in restaurants. For example, she asked one of the hotel people for an elástico and got a blank look (she meant rubber band, but the word she used means elastic, like in an elastic waistband.
