I give you a real, not ironic, Amazon review of Dick Morris’ book:

I’m not sure there has ever been a book that required more research than Here Come the Black Helicopters. There are a half a dozen pages of small print references in the back. Wow. Thanks for your work, Dick.

Ruth Moody’s voice is just gorgeous.

Here’s an achingly beautiful duet with Mark Knopfler.

Cruz adviser Rick Tyler told the Associated Press that the Treasury Department could collect the postcard tax forms. “There would be a very small division inside Treasury,” he said, “and it would not be in any way representative of the old IRS.”

Chris Edwards, who leads the libertarian Cato Institute’s tax policy studies, questions whether a small department could do the job. He told AP that even the most simplified tax code would require 10,000 to 20,000 tax collectors.abajournal.com

Start the taxing at $40K and tax capital gains as part of your income, and we can talk. Oh, what do you mean capital gains won’t be taxed? So, the reason it’s a flat tax is that the upper crust won’t pay anything?

i find most wingnuts are incapable of realizing that a flat tax would mean their tax bill would skyrocket

one reason for this - besides being totally incapable of doing arithmetic - is that they dont believe in the federal budget, or rather they believe in an ass-pulled-out-of version that they hand around like an urban legend

Cato’s made it pretty clear that Cruz’s idea won’t work. The IRS can be reformed, but it cannot be abolished as a practical matter. The fact is that for its problems, it adequately performs its critical functions and is not by the standards of government overly wasteful.

I don’t expect Ted Cruz to back off of this bad idea, since he clearly thinks its wingnut catnip. But he’s just given me yet another reason not to vote for him in the Illinois primary next March.

Michigan auto shop offers discounts for gun owners, bans gays

Fed up with his perceived acceptance of gay Americans and the shunning of firearms, a Michigan auto shop owner posted a message on Facebook offering a discount to gun owners and a refusal to serve those who are openly gay all in the “spirit of freedom.”

Brian Klawiter, who owns Dieseltec Automotive Repair in Grandville, wrote the message on April 14 detailing a dichotomy he sees as unfair (adding emphasis by writing words in all caps).

“Our rights as conservative Americans are being squashed more and more everyday. Apparently if you are white (or close to it), you have a job, go to church, and own a gun… That translates into racists, privileged, bigot, conspiracy theorist,” he writes. “Too many of us say nothing. Well, freedom of speech isn’t just for Liberals, THEY are the ones that need to learn to “co-exist”, THEY are the ones who need to WORK to be ‘equal.’”

“Guns ARE allowed at DIESELTEC, so much so in fact that we will offer a discount if you bring in your gun,” he continues, adding, “I am a Christian. My company will be run in a way that reflects that. Dishonesty, thievery, immoral behavior, etc. will not be welcomed at MY place of business. (I would not hesitate to refuse service to an openly gay person or persons. Homosexuality is wrong, period. If you want to argue this fact with me then I will put your vehicle together with all bolts and no nuts and you can see how that works.)”

Bigoted asshole angling for sympathy purchased by wingnuts. Neither a good American nor a good Christian.

Well, they trust me enough at the scuba shop that I now have a set of keys and permission to come in when they are closed to work on things on the repair bench. I’m moving up in the world.

Doing “Rescue Diver” (think “Scuba Lifeguard”) this weekend. Going to be a long couple of days, 6 dives on Saturday and 3 on Sunday, and all of them are going to be pretty ‘active’ in terms of towing somebody, stuff like that. I know I’m going to sleep like a log those evenings.

I’m excited. This is the last certification I need before I can start on my professional level certs.

Have a great evening, and remember, no matter how bad things may be at the moment, you’re not “The Ginger Avenger”, so life isn’t really that bad now, is it?

Sliver of good news for Wisconsin.

New Poll Finds Russ Feingold Beating Sen. Johnson By Double Digits

A new poll finds former Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) beating Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) by double digits in the 2016 race for Johnson’s senate seat.

The Marquette University Law School poll released Thursday found that 54 percent of registered voters say they would support Feingold in a 2016 matchup, while 38 percent said they would support Johnson.

Bad news for Walker.

Scott Walker’s Wisconsin approval rating drops in latest poll

As Gov. Scott Walker moves closer to a formal announcement that he will run for president, a new poll shows his approval rating in Wisconsin is slipping and some of his legislative priorities are deeply unpopular.

Still, the poll released Thursday by Marquette University Law School found Walker leading the Republican presidential field in Wisconsin. And nearly two-thirds of GOP-leaning voters in the state want him to run.

Yeah, just peeked at it. Rather poor handheld video from a phone.

The problem with any Batman vs. Superman story line is that fundamentally the stories’ basic premises don’t mix.

Superman is a Christ-replacement, and rather obviously so (just like Doctor Who.) Batman became over time the classic anti-hero in a faux New York.

The former calls for magical beings from magical places. The latter calls for very human, if occassionaly biologically or mechanically improved, characters playing out psychological dramas.

But the mob tyranny is what his conservatism is all about.

The movie is obviously based heavily on Frank Miller’s iconic Dark Knight Returns series (which also heavily influenced Christopher Nolan’s series). The thing is, Miller’s series was bat-shit insane (pun!). Mostly in a good way, but still insane. And humorless. And a deconstruction of the superhero mythos, as it stood in the 1980s.

Turning that into a satisfying movie experience in 2015 is pretty frickin’ tough. I suspect it’s basically going to be like the Watchman movie.

Although kind of fascinating that he was co-invented by Joe Shuster, a Canadian-American Jew — which is partially why Superman had black hair, instead of being blond, and was an immigrant, and the Daily Planet was modeled on the old Toronto Star building. As an icon for Americana, he’s very different than, say, Captain America.

Dwayne Johnson now does movies just so the producers can have a name that potential ticket buyers will recognize. This is like the old studios, with their stable of stars, which they would put in an endless list of not so good movies, just to have the right names on the billboard.

I’d count Morrison’s “All Star Superman” and the animated series versions as very good and highly entertaining.

In my opinion, Superman is at his best when he’s written as a thinker, and when he’s placed in scenarios where he can’t just power through…or, more tellingly, doesn’t want to power through because meeting force with force could mean other people getting hurt.

That and the fact that even though he’s supposed to be the cliche epitome of God, country, and apple pie, Steve Rogers is far more complicated than that. Hell, in the films he’s actually been the one to swear the most out of all the Avengers. He was the guy to risk jail by lying on his recruitment forms multiple times to get into the Army. He risked court martial to save Bucky by basically going AWOL to find him. He also basically fought a one man war against the US government in the Winter Soldier film.

Additionally, Superman has a secret identity, and hides his true identity. At the end of the day, he can go home and be Clark Kent with almost no one the wiser.

Steve Rogers was the literal posterboy for the war effort and his story out there for the whole nation to hear. He was in movies, trading cards, collectibles, etc. Everyone knows who he was, and he has to deal with that.

The great Superman deconstruction was Miracleman (ne Marvelman), Alan Moore’s amazing series in the 1980s. Okay, he was really taking about the Shazam myth, but most of it still could apply to Superman.

In his story, the superheros decide they’re tired of our shit, destroy all of humanities’ nukes, and take control of the world, turning it into a communist paradise. Good times!

A quick sidebar on Vox Day, one of a handful of this saga’s bold-faced names. In addition to writing sci-fi, he’s a video game designer and early proponent of Gamergate, which, he argues, resembles Sad Puppies in that “both groups are striking back against the left-wing control freaks who have subjected science fiction to ideological control for two decades and are now attempting to do the same thing in the game industry.” He is the second human being to be expelled from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA), after he used the organization’s official Twitter feed to slam the award-winning black novelist N.K. Jemisin as a “half-savage.” He questions the need for women’s suffrage. And he believes that our national ills can be partially attributed to “the infestation of even the smallest American heartland towns by African, Asian, and Aztec cultures.” Yes, Aztecs. ANYWAY.

Here’s an excellent post by someone who was on the Sad Puppy/Rabid Puppy slate and declined his nomination:
blackgate.com

Which leads directly to my next point. Looking over the list of past Hugo-winning novels — the category I feel I know the most about, if only in relative terms — I don’t see that books which have won or been nominated in the last ten years are appreciably more ideological than books which have won or been nominated in any other ten-year stretch.
Some of that may have to do with the way I approach the books (more on this in 1.A.iv, below). I look at Heinlein, in particular, as fundamentally a political writer concerned (speaking generally) with issues of liberty and society — others will disagree, but all my life I’ve generally found the core of his books have less to do with the narratives than with his political beliefs. This is more true in some books, less so in others. But it’s what I find when I read him.
Similarly, take a look at something like H. Beam Piper’s Little Fuzzy (nominated 1963), which I loved as a young teenager. It’s about a man in conflict with a corporation — specifically, a business trying to declare native life on an alien planet to be non-sapient so it can better exploit the planet. That would strike me as a political theme, and I assume it would strike Torgersen as such also: among his list of “subversive switcheroos” he gave on February 4, he mentions “Planetary colonization [stories in which] The humans are the invaders and the native aliens are the righteous victims.” Which to me is essentially Little Fuzzy.

Beyond that, though, I don’t know how to describe writers like Kurt Vonnegut (nominated 1960, 1964, and 1970) and Ursula Le Guin (won 1970, nominated 1972, won 1975) as anything other than political. Or Samuel Delany. Or William Gibson. Or Kim Stanley Robinson.

Vonnegut was nothing if not political.

“I’m eating my breakfast, I’m checking my Facebook, all of a sudden I see this Amber Alert for this child and it looks like this child in my bed, and I’m like, ‘Oh, my God! What’s going on?’” John Truong told ABC affiliate KOMO-TV in Seattle.

As I understand it, the WHACKOS would say that social media is the devil, invading privacy and all that …

John Ringo is one author I consider to be more right-wing. I enjoyed the books of his I’ve read. He is one of the few male writers who can actually write female characters.

the Last Centurian was a book I thoroughly enjoyed (in audio—it was excellently narrated).

How is your day so far?

Sitting at home with a cold that hit full-force yesterday. Might have to go out simply to refill the tissue supply.

Plus something bit me up while I was traveling Monday and walking beaches (or while sitting in a park eating lunch.) Got a rash in a few places on my legs that looks like a series of inflamed small bite or sting wounds. Irritating and slightly itchy.

Drinking tea and watching it rain while they pour concrete on the construction site across the street.

212 LastYearsMan  Apr 17, 2015 5:48:27am

George RR Martin (a longtime Worldcom attender) had a long series of posts of the whole Sad Puppies/Rabid Puppies vs. Hugos situation — fairly moderate politically, but he does a great job of showing the whole brouhaha is yet another big, whiny, right-wing nothingburger (the apex of which was probably this post, but there are a whole bunch of other ones going into even more detail).

I read a book years ago actually called Queen Bee. It was a novel. The Bee was an extreme version of the syndrome.

I sat thru a presentation once about male/female differences in management.
Men play as a team, women have a hierarchy. Which struck me as bizarre, since the speaker went on to say men lead from the pinnacle of a pyramid and women lead from the center of a wagon wheel.

whatever.

All I know is that in MY house, I am the Lady of the House and She Who Must Be Obeyed.

The later is also a book series. The original by H. Rider Haggard was borrowed by Rumpole.

Since, AIUI, it costs more to carry out the Death Penaltly than it does to carry out a life sentence, I concur.

I don’t think we should remove the Death Penalty totally. I just do not see any practical benefit from it as things stand. We can remove a person from society without killing them.

While it seems wrong that society must then be obliged to maintain them, it is more cost-effective than not doing so.

I have particular issues with seriously violent criminals. At some point, I think they crossed a line and chose to give-up their rights. Obdi and I have been over this.

I don’t think I’m going to change my mind.

I’ve always advised women to get as much education as they can and make their own money, instead of making a huge mistake like I did as a young woman 56 yrs ago. It’s not hatred of men, it’s simply looking out for yourself and your own prospects first. Are there any Ivies that aren’t included in that group? Well, Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth.

I imagine the State schools listed get quite a ton of alumni gifts as well from those who’ve accumulated a lot of wealth. When you have a lot of money pouring in as “gifts” and endowments, you can afford the kinds of investments, and risks, most smaller and State schools cannot.

The University of Kentucky’s student newspaper photo editor was shot to death early Friday on East Maxwell Street near Transylvania Park.

Jonathan W. Krueger, 22, was from Perrysburg, Ohio, according to his Facebook page. He was killed by a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the Fayette County coroner’s office. Krueger was to be the paper’s ad manager in the fall.

Krueger was a junior in the UK College of Communications and Information, UK officials said.

Lexington police Lt. Clay Combs said officers suspect that the shooting involved an attempted robbery, although many details remain unclear.

I hit the library when I was a teen, but it was all just medical stuff at that point—there was little else, except the male coach who was too embarrassed to even discuss it candidly, even to describe how our reproductive organs worked in a “health” class.

A coach, for crying out loud.

The first real (and very helpful) information I got about how lady parts worked was from the illustrated how-to-use-this-product paper that came with my first box of tampons.
My reaction was “why is this so difficult for a grownup to explain to kids?”

The thing about teaching sex-ed in a phys-ed class one day… is that being phys-ed and being way back when, the entire classroom was just guys. So you had two male phys-ed teachers and a bunch of 15/16 year old students (yeah, a bit late I think.) I’m pretty sure the class consisted of a) defining puberty, b) defining secondary sexual characteristics, and c) something about “VD” as we used to call STDs back then.

Ayep. I got more out of reading the pamphlets I got from the school nurse when I got my first period and the instructions in a box of tampons than I ever got at home or at school. I had to pretty much teach myself about sex.

The problem with any Batman vs. Superman story line is that fundamentally the stories’ basic premises don’t mix.

They “can” mix if handled correctly. Yeah, it takes suspension of disbelief, but we’re talking about superheroes here, so that’s a given. The 1990’s DC animated universe did a heck of a jog on those kinds of stories.

“An Associated Press reporter on the scene said the large blast went off just outside the consulate building in Erbil’s Ankawa neighborhood, setting nearby cars on fire. Kurdish security forces quickly arrived on the scene.” More

Well, we have this to report in the big picture of energy flow from the planet to space:

The average temperature across global land and ocean surface temperatures combined for March 2015 was 0.85°C (1.53°F) higher than the 20th century average of 12.7°C (54.9°F). This marks the highest March temperature in the 136-year period of record, surpassing the previous record of 2010 by 0.05°C (0.09°F). The Northern Hemisphere had its second highest March temperature on record, behind only 2008, while the Southern hemisphere tied with 2002 for third highest.

[…]

The first quarter of 2015 was the warmest such period on record across the world’s land and ocean surfaces […]

Carry on.

Early indicators of the malaria parasite in Africa developing resistance to the most effective drug available have been confirmed, according to new research published in Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

Researchers at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine found Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites with a mutation to the gene Ap2mu were less sensitive to the antimalarial drug artemisinin.

GENEVA, April 17 (Reuters) - ‘Isis’ has been removed from the official list of names of future hurricanes as it was now deemed inappropriate because of the eponymous militant group, the U.N.’s World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Friday.

As the name of an ancient goddess of Egypt, Isis had been on the WMO list of names for hurricanes in the eastern North Pacific in 2016, WMO spokeswoman Clare Nullis said.

But ISIS is also used to describe the Islamic State militant group, whose forces have captured large swathes of Iraq and Syria and which stands accused by U.N. war crimes investigators of committing brutal atrocities against civilians.

The proposal by the WMO regional centre was endorsed by the WMO Hurricane Committee, composed of experts from 27 member states and territories meeting in Costa Rica this week, Nullis said. “The Hurricane Committee removed the name “Isis” from the rotating list, and agreed to replace it with “Ivette”.”

Your daily moment of “WTF?!”

The plaintiffs had agreed to pay for an attorney to serve a subpoena to Jensen in prison, but the defendants asked to expand the role of that attorney - a guardian ad litem who oversees the legal affairs of an incarcerated or incompetent person - and place him on their defense team.

The plaintiffs objected, saying defendants had no right to counsel in civil cases, and balked at paying the attorney’s legal fees.

They argued that the guardian, Kirk Bottner, acted as Jensen’s defense lawyer anyway, over their objections, and they asked a court in September to limit his role.

A court official recommended that each side in the case pay half of Bottner’s $46,000 bill.

I can’t imagine anyone who disagrees with that.” He said the concert is intended to help the community.

The Sandy Hook Promise group formed in the wake of the massacre to honor 20 children and six staff members killed. I get the catalogs since I ordered my Nikon D3200 from them two years ago.

This order was “discretionary toy fund” from my company bonus* to get a telephoto lens and an additional memory card.

* - Bonus pretty much gets eaten to help with taxes every year, but I earmark a bit for personal stuff. Plus the company did an additional “plus” this year by tossing a free $1000 into everyone’s 401K.

He says that yes the companies like McDonald’s and Wal-Mart are benefiting from fucking their workers over, BUT, society wants a person who works full-time to not be in poverty so it is society as a whole who is responsible for keeping these people fed and housed. So taxpayers are not subsidizing those low wages, they’re keeping up their part of the bargain.

Maybe the argument back is to make the process more efficient by having the company pay more and not require as much bureaucracy to collect the monies and then pay them out again. Then again, he is missing the point that Walmart is leeching off the taxpayer in any case.

You have to ask why history calls them “Robber Barons” and not “Road-building Barons”

Even the railroad Barons of the 1800’s were called “Robber Barons” because they built the mighty railroads with government land grants, government protection through seized Native American lands, and importation of cheap Asian labor.

Bees don’t sting when they’re swarming. But there are probably a lot of pissed off bees in broken boxes that are trying to protect their hives…that’s not swarming.

I worked bees for a few years - they’re really quite gentle if you handle them correctly.

I hope they aren’t being killed. Foam makes me think they are.

Meat world trolls suck.

Our super, a Uruguayan woman in her late 50’s who’s been taking care of this building for 10+ years, just called me asking if she could come talk to me about something because she needed a favor.

She showed up at my door in tears because she’d put up a sign about the exterminators coming tomorrow and someone wrote a bunch of nastiness on it (f*ck you, b*tch, mf, etc.)

Anyway, she wanted me to scan it and print copies so she could give it to whoever, which I did. She kept asking me “Why? Why? I treat everyone nice.” Because some people are just sick assholes, that’s why. I assured her that it wasn’t about her, it was about the person who wrote that trash. So anyway, I gave her a hug and assured her that I love her, then sent her on her way.

WTF? Why do people do that kind of sick, chickenshit stuff? It seriously pisses me off. There are WAY too many assholes in the world.

</end rant>

re: #555 #FergusonFireside

I hope they aren’t being killed. Foam makes me think they are.

They are. Foam will suffocate them. Then the beekeeper will lose all the colonies that could otherwise be repaired and transferred to new ‘supers’ (the name for the boxes bee frames are hung inside). Also lost, all the brood frames (new bee larvae). So, assuming it was a full sized (2-ton) bee truck, that would be 120 colonies lost. If it was an 18 wheeler, there could be as many as 300 colonies stacked on the back of the truck.

When I worked bees I would pick up 120 colonies at a time and move them around - we put 40 colonies per bee ‘yard’ so 120 would be enough for three yards around a large alfalfa field.

There is a way to save most of the colonies, but it’s too time-consuming and the road would have to stay closed.
Opening the road is the main priority.
And those firefighters don’t know what they’re doing.

dammit.

Yes, the Feds have no right to exercise control on the states, and local authorities have no right to resist the State. Got it.

It’s pretty cool. For once a social media thingy device change I like.

On my smartphone, when I go to retweet something, it gives me the option to “retweet” or “quote tweet”. And the “quote tweet” option does the new thing of the tweet in the tweet.

Wingnut welfare. The also-rans end up on the speaker circuit and make millions off the rubes.

586 darthstar  Apr 17, 2015 12:23:36pm

Oh, god…there’s a narrative under Chuck’s gofundme page in addition to the stolen copyrighted image…

I need $40,000 to hire private eyes, pick up the material, run the requisite stupidly expensive tests, and produce a high production quality video.

Any money leftover (and there shouldn’t be) or raised over the will be used as a fund to induce people in the Clinton world to leak material to us. As there is serious dissension in the Clinton empire, this shouldn’t be too hard to get them to rat on one another. (We are also working at establishing more connection with the hacker Guccifer to see if we obtain some of his materials legally.)

Yes, this is vague (because we don’t want to tip off the Clintons to what we’re up to) and no, it’s not illegal. (I checked with five different lawyers.)

Any money left over will be used for bribes…hilarious. Oh, and his grammar sucks.

But he checked with FIVE DIFFERENT LAWYERS!
