Saturday Afternoon Jam: Death Cab for Cutie, NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

An intimate set from an excellent band

This is a really great live performance by Death Cab for Cutie. I was trying to think who singer Ben Gibbard’s voice reminds me of, when it suddenly hit me: he sounds like a less edgy version of Stan Ridgway from Wall of Voodoo.

(Their name, by the way, comes from a song by another of my favorite bands, the wacky British Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band.)

Death Cab For Cutie came as a trio: Ben Gibbard sang, Nick Harmer played bass, and we wheeled in our piano for Zac Rae. This intimate set included two new songs — including “Black Sun,” the first single from their new album Kintsugi.

The album title refers to the Japanese art of reassembling broken pottery and making the breakage part of the newly formed pot. Death Cab For Cutie, a groundbreaking band formed in 1997, has gone through its own rebuilding of sorts. Chris Walla, a founding member of the band, has left, after contributing music to Kintsugi, but that’s his farewell offering.

Death Cab For Cutie is still strongly defined by Gibbard’s words, and that couldn’t be more evident in this beautifully stark performance, which also includes “No Room In Frame” from Kintsugi, as well as two stripped-down favorites from the past. One, “Your Heart Is An Empty Room,” is from Plans, while a beautiful love song from Transatlanticism, “Passenger Seat,” moistened more than a few eyes in the crowd.

Set List
“Black Sun” 0:07
“No Room In Frame” 5:13
“Your Heart Is An Empty Room” 9:23
“Passenger Seat” 14:00

Any thread that begins with Death Cab for Cutie then includes mentions of Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and Wall of Voodoo is already platinum in my book.

Nice Tiny Music performance. I really like Ben Gibbard’s voice and his phrasing.

When I heard this tune (YouTube - Long Album Version) back years ago, I was hooked on Death Cab for Cutie. I’m not sure what it is, but there is a haunting loneliness to his voice. The music to this tune fit his voice perfectly. It gives me chills.

And where are the patrol boats with Ricky Perry on ‘em??? Oh wait, he is too busy kissing butt in New Hampshire pretending he has a chance in hell of getting the GOP nomination.

I guess the ol’ southern border isn’t a problem until the next mention of immigration hits the GOP parroting points.

Fox Austin, Feb 23:

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott is keeping the Texas National Guard on the border until they’re replaced by troopers.

But Democrats and some Republicans are showing frustration with a skyrocketing tab is approaching $1 billion since 2008. Border security was major issue among GOP voters last year, but Democrats and some Republicans want better metrics attached to more money.

The state last week announced it will offer fast-tracker training to veteran Texas police officers who want to become troopers.

Ted Cruz in New Hampshire had a line (I’m paraphrasing)….abolish the IRS and send the 90k people who work for it to the border. Imagine an illegal seeing an IRS agent? They’d run back home…

Disgusting.

And beyond common sense to say out loud we should lay off 90K fellow Americans.

Bwahahaha.

When George Lucas tried to expand his production company studios in California’s wealthy Marin County, the community pushed back. Then the “Star Wars” creator wanted to sell the land to a developer who would build affordable housing.

It’s inciting class warfare,” Carolyn Lenert, then head of the North San Rafael Coalition of Residents, told The New York Times at the time.

Now, two years after that project stalled, Lucas has decided to build the affordable housing and pay for it all himself.

“We’ve got enough millionaires here. What we need is some houses for regular working people,” Lucas said through his lawyer Gary Giacomini.

Because providing housing for service industry employees is just like waging war on the rich.

I need $40,000 to hire private eyes, pick up the material, run the requisite stupidly expensive tests, and produce a high production quality video.

Any money leftover (and there shouldn’t be) or raised over the will be used as a fund to induce people in the Clinton world to leak material to us. As there is serious dissension in the Clinton empire, this shouldn’t be too hard to get them to rat on one another. Sooper genius couldn’t take 10 seconds to look up assault?

In common law, assault is the act of creating apprehension of an imminent harmful or offensive contact with a person. An assault is carried out by a threat of bodily harm coupled with an apparent, present ability to cause the harm.

So unwanted touching along with threatening comments meet the definition of assault easily. Since the charge was sexual assault, “sexual abuser” seems approprate.

And while Weil states matter-of-factually, “I’ve got as good a chance as anyone,” his platforms seem specially aimed at the political third-rail: A $22 per hour minimum wage, national legalization and regulation of marijuana, mandatory gun insurance for gun owners and free abortions are just a few of his platforms.

The reality: The military isn’t treating Christians like precious little snowflakes anymore. If Huck wanted to see open hostility for a someone’s religious beliefs, he should have checked out how Agnostics or atheists were treated when I was in.

Oh, right, he never served.

“We’re non-believers.”

“Pick one.”

“Neither?”

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A 10-year-old girl with a rare genetic disorder just wanted people to come to her birthday.

Mackenzie Moretter has Sotos Syndrome-it left her with some brain damage and makes it difficult for her to make friends. When no one responded to invitations to her birthday party, her mom reached out on Facebook and Mackenzie got much more than a party.

Music, cake and games aren’t unique for a birthday party, but this is not an ordinary party for an ordinary girl.

Mackenzie thought no one would come to her 10th birthday party.

“I have a hard time making friends at school,” she said.

But when people heard her story, they responded in a very big way. Everyone showed up to celebrate — from neighbors, to strangers, to big names. Even Elsa from Frozen made an appearance.

I looked around the news. The only people talking about a military retention issue are Huck’s band of crackpots. In fact, some of the services are tightening retention, making it harder to stay in anyways.

In 2015, Army will lose nearly 20,000 soldiers in drawdown

The Army stands to lose 18,200 soldiers in the drawdown plan for 2015, through attrition and reduced accessions, but also with retention screening boards that may lead to soldiers being forced out.

Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno said involuntary separation actions will be targeted at the various officer and noncommissioned officer ranks “to keep the force in balance,” and to compensate for the additional soldiers who were brought into service during the manpower buildup for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“Now that we are reducing the Army, we have got to bring (those levels) back down, and we are going to continue to make decisions to do that,” said the chief during a September interview at his Pentagon office.

“My guess is that as we continue to draw the force down, we will have to do (selective release) boards every year through 2019,” he said.

Now, lets just say for a minute that its true, that fewer troops are choosing to renlist. Allow me to offer another theory.

After being at war since 2001, Veterans can hear the GOP pounding the war drums again and have zero interest in fighting Iran to line the pockets of the GOP’s contractor buddies.

As opposed to the GOP chickenhawks, real soldiers know the score. They know Iraq was absolutely made for the kind of force we can bring, as long as you define “victory” correctly, and don’t care what happens afterwards.

They also know Iran is Afghanistan with a large, well-trained, motivated, and relatively well-equipped military. I’d be bailing for goddamn sure…. (Ellipsis!)

South Korea police clash with protesters over ferry disaster

reuters.com

(Reuters) - South Korean police clashed with thousands of protesters, blocking their way to the presidential palace, where they hoped to demand a more vigorous government response to a ferry disaster that claimed more than 300 lives a year ago.

“About 13,000 police and 470 police buses were deployed in the area around Seoul’s main ceremonial thoroughfare and 100 protesters were arrested, an official of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said.

“Saturday’s rally, organised by a group representing families of the victims, was the largest in recent weeks as the country marked the first anniversary of the April 16 disaster.” More

Does ISIL thinks this kind of religious genocide is going to win friends and influence people? If so, this is going to be a long fight against a new kind of fascism the world has yet to experience. I don’t mean the usual “Islamofascist” crap from the right wing, either. This is something different, something which can pull in people from western countries eager to experience and contribute to a “cause” which allows them to achieve something which fills an empty existence without thinking about it, even if it means slaughtering innocents.

I wish I could express this more clearly. Being an atheist, I have no religious dog in this fight, just the preservation of lives against the insanity we are currently witnessing, this zealotry gone mad, which I think is more about power than religion in the long run.

thamesvalley.police.uk

ISIL appears to be an “alternative” for those who no longer wish to work within the system, who simply give up and offer the ultimate sacrifice. This seems to be a core element of the insanity—self-preservation, for oneself, one’s mate, even for one’s children, be damned.

We don’t always get what we want and have perfect lives—that hasn’t happened for the majority of people in history. Most of us come to this conclusion as we mature and do the best with what we have even while we try to make things better, not just for ourselves but for others. We can certainly keep our own identities while we work within the system we live. We see that happening even today, in the US, as racism once again becomes a huge element in this society, along with women’s rights, LGBT rights, etc, both in every day life and in the upcoming election.

I’m not saying we have a perfect “system” that should be transferable to other countries whole, but what’s being offered in the ME and North Africa isn’t democracy from any side at this point. There is no “democracy” in war zones.

A friend with whom I share book recommendations said this was for me. He said it was just right up my alley—as it was way weird. Then he shook his head.

I enjoyed it, but I hate to tell him it wasn’t all that weird. A novel angle on a standard Zombie story —with a sci-fi bent instead of a horror.

I liked it. But on a 1-5 scale of weirdness, it barely rated.

Made me wonder about the average person’s tolerance for weird.

310 ObserverArt  Apr 19, 2015 7:10:26am

Morning all. I am getting ready to go to a friend’s place to watch the Grand Prix of Bahrain. Unfortunately I will not be watching Meet The Press this morning to see if the speculation that Ohio governor John Kasich will be using the show to announce he is getting aboard the GOP 2016 clown car.

Two local NBC news shows are pushing the central Ohio crowd hard to tune in. I don’t know if that is to help Kasich or MTP ratings.

If anyone watches, please post up some comments. LGF hasn’t had much comment on Kasich, and if he gets in the clown car, I expect the members to let it rip.

I hope people in the media ride Kasich hard. He doesn’t like criticism and hopefully someone will say something nationally that gets him heated up and the asshole in him comes flying out.

I guess I’ll have to try to catch a repeat late tonight.

Heh…one of the local GOP talking heads just said “There is no clear front runner. John Kasich could become that front runner.” Yuck.

Oh look, Rob “I think I am a senator” Portman is talking now. God that man is so boring. You almost fall asleep as he tries to form words to actually say something.

Later. This comment is from Battleground Ohio.

So there’s this:
April 19 Has Become Everyone-is-a-Threat Day

It’s a bug. In a jar. A chemically contaminated bug that was a prop in a military exercise held last month in Georgia. Engineers and security police at Moody air force base played out a scenario where “sovereign citizens” used weapons of mass destruction—in the form of contaminated bugs—to attack the base, a trifecta of trickery that melds terrorism, Armageddon and sedition all into one convenient domestic soup. That bug is the greatest threat to American freedom. Not because of Iran or North Korea or al Qaeda but because of a lazy and thoughtless convergence—that’s the hot word in military circles these days—that can define anyone who does anything as a homegrown terrorist threat. And it’s all about April 19.

331 Justanotherhuman  Apr 19, 2015 7:51:37am

I guess the ol’ southern border isn’t a problem until the next mention of immigration hits the GOP parroting points.

The patrol boats are limited to lakes and those parts of the Rio Grande with enough water to float them. They draw around 3-4 feet so they can’t operate in some parts of the river for much of the year.

Here’s some more about what’s going on down on the border. Good stuff, including how US drones are used to provide ISR support for the Mexican army.

“How does the media fit into this? What responsibility do we have?

“There’s this journalistic ethos saying if I get one opinion then I need to get another opinion that countervails that. So if I say the world is round, are you obligated to say the world is flat, lest someone think you are being biased in your reporting? Well, that’s absurd. You wouldn’t do that, you’re educated. You know that there are certain points of view that have no foundation at all in objective truth.

“So the question arises then at what point should a journalist give equal time to equal points of view that are opposite or in denial of emergent scientific truths. If you allocated column inches in proportion to the scientific consensus of experiments, there would be one sentence talking about people who deny climate change and the rest of the ten columns talking about research that supports it. But that’s not what we see in the public.

“I think journalists are abandoning what would be their sensibility of following the emergent truths and in some cases painting a debate as though there’s a scientific debate when in fact there isn’t one — and that makes for headlines and more clicks.”

Well said. Something those using the internet needs to learn.

No, but I can see three positive potential outcomes of a Sanders run, although the last two are only positive to Republicans (such as I):

1. Sanders plus O’Malley is probably enough to force Hillary Clinton to agree to at least a handful of debates. Primaries are better with voters getting to see all the candidates at one time and thus learning about their voting options.

2. Sanders the Socialist might force Clinton to the left on an issue or two, thus giving the eventual Republican nominee an opening on those issues to occupy the center and leave Clinton looking more liberal in the general election.

3. A possibly humiliating defeat for Bernie Sanders is always a good thing in my book.

VOCABULARY WORD OF THE DAY:

“elitism colonialism puritanism”? Those three words don’t equate very well, and what many people see as “puritanism” (but is more properly simply called “religious moralism”) is hardly a “European” (which in this context means ‘Western’) trait. I also don’t like the word because it assigns a overall negative connotation to ‘Europe’, and seems to say that black people have to maintain a distance from things that are ‘European’.

To be honest, I regard “Negropean” to be synonymous with the slang usage of ‘Oreo’ in its practical meaning.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Got back from a minor driving trip through history. About 1400 miles driving total, and a comparable number of photos. It was much needed to be sure, as the ongoing family medical issues reasserted themselves yesterday so another weekend evening was spent in a regional ER.

Having visited the residences of Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe, I can’t help but take Lafayette’s position and rage against the fact that they all talked about equal rights and freedom for man, all while each held slaves and refused to address the issue substantively. It’s the paradox that we still live with to this day. It was also interesting to hear about how each of these founders may have been brilliant politically and philosophically, but their financial acumen was less than one would expect. Each was left with significant debts on their deaths, and one of the reasons that their homes don’t have the possessions they could was that much was sold off to pay off the debts they racked up.

Curiously, one of the big reasons for the debts, was that land prices fell into a depression during this time - a consequence of the Louisiana purchase more than doubling the size of the nation, reducing the value of land throughout the original territory of the US due to a glut of land.

Saw a report this morning of a rookie cop (whose family bought him a body cam) managed to avoid shooting and killing a man who was being sought on murder charges and had rushed towards this cop while calling for the cop to kill him. This cop showed tremendous restraint, and the lesson other cops should learn from it is that firearms should be used only as a last resort - not the first thing they think of in a situation.

The epidemic of officer-involved shootings will come to an end when cops are trained that firearms are not the first line of defense; they are a last resort when all else has been exhausted.

Great track. I also like “I like it heavy” too (“Since I was 13 years old

Wow, never having owned anything beyond a cheap point & shoot (in terms of film cameras) before I bought my T3i, I wasn’t even aware ISO went that low! My dad had an Argus that was built like a tank (we’re talking 1960s-70s here) that he used to take gorgeous photos with, but I never paid much attention to how he took them—I hardly noticed anything BUT the photos.

He always used slide film and would develop any prints he wanted based on that. He had hundreds & hundreds of them taken in national parks (before I was born), the Texas coast, the Southwest… We’d set up the slide projector & screen a couple of times a year and look at them all. Because viewing slides meant you were looking at light passing through the photo/film instead of being reflected off paper, the colors were amazing. He could also take some amazing b&w photos. He had a great eye.

re: #392 CuriousLurker

The waterfall shot was done with a Sigma 17-50 2.8. Only filter was skylight 1A. No ND filter used.

That particular waterfall shot (which was one of a series taken) is possible because the light was coming from the right angle to let me shoot slow 1/4 second at f16. Late afternoon and this particular waterfall’s location allows spring shots like that with the sun filtering through the not yet bloomed forest canopy without full intensity.

I got the timing/lighting right on that hike to get some great shots of the falls.

I thought the Japanese Pederson was pretty cool too. Seemed to come from the same group of Ordnance personnel sent to the Philippines as the Type 1 MMG Forgotten Weapons featured a while back. The Japanese were so desperate they were sending design-testers to war, and those testers decided to try to do more damage before dying by bringing some of the prototypes they had to hand with them.

Pope’s remarks ‘to accelerate Hagia Sophia’s conversion into mosque’

Pope Francis’ labeling of the mass killings of the Ottoman Armenians as “the first genocide of the 20th century” will only accelerate the reopening of Hagia Sophia to Muslim worship, the top Islamic official in Ankara has suggested.

“Frankly, I believe that the pope’s remarks will only accelerate the process for Hagia Sophia to be re-opened for [Muslim] worship,” Professor Mefail Hizli, the mufti of Ankara, said in a written statement released late April 15.

According to Hizli, the pope’s statement “has reflected a modern color of the crusader wars launched in these lands for centuries.” These lands have long been the “standard bearer” of the Muslim world, meaning many enemies, both from inside and outside of the country, have been launching attacks with different methods. She also spent 8 years in the White House as first lady - unique and applicable experience no one else has ever had.

And she’s crossed the commander-in-chief threshold:

In a Cabinet-style setting, surrounded by retired military leaders, Sen. Hillary Clinton said the public should ask whether Democratic presidential rival Barack Obama has met the criteria needed to become the nation’s commander in chief.

“I think that since we now know Sen. (John) McCain will be the nominee for the Republican Party, national security will be front and center in this election. We all know that. And I think it’s imperative that each of us be able to demonstrate we can cross the commander-in-chief threshold,” the New York senator told reporters crowded into an infant’s bedroom-sized hotel conference room in Washington.

“I believe that I’ve done that. Certainly, Sen. McCain has done that and you’ll have to ask Sen. Obama with respect to his candidacy,” she said.

Calling McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee a good friend and a “distinguished man with a great history of service to our country,” Clinton said, “Both of us will be on that stage having crossed that threshold. That is a critical criterion for the next Democratic nominee to deal with.”

While I wait for answers to my questions, here’s a Sanity Break:

‘It’s our responsibility as moms’: Mother-of-two Kristen Bell urges parents to vaccinate their children as she stars in spring-inspired cover shoot

Kristen Bell, the voice of Frozen’s Anna and the spunky star of House of Lies, believes that parents take the anti-vaccination debate too far and endanger other kids while they are at it.

‘Your child is 100 times more likely to be struck by lightning than to have a severe reaction to a vaccine; that’s a fact,’ Kristen said in an interview for the May issue of Good Housekeeping.

The mother of two daughters, Lincoln, two, and Delta, just four months, with actor Dax Sheppard shares how her views on vaccinations actually changed after the birth of her girls, as well as her own self-acceptance of her changing body and the hustle of her acting career.

Kristen takes a hard stance on vaccinating her kids and urges other parents to do so as well. Citing scientific research, she shares her intimate belief that it’s her duty to not only protect her children, but other children, too - especially those who may suffer from autoimmune diseases or cancer.

‘If your kid can’t get vaccinations; if he goes to school with my kid and I choose not to give my kid vaccinations, I’m putting your kid at risk,’ she said. ‘To me, that’s unacceptable.’

‘As moms, our responsibility is not just to our kids - it’s to all the other kids, too,’ she added.

To be fair, lots of people in the West still think the only advantages the Red Army had were numbers and winter.

And if this is the mini-series I think it is, I watched a few minutes of it some months back. I changed the channel when it showed German paratroopers dropping over what the text on the screen said was the Maginot Line. When I saw the very important 1940 German campaign against France being depicted so briefly and inaccurately I knew the series was worthless.

I understand why an American TV program might not want to lavish attention on the German campaign against France and the Low Countries in May-June 1940, but having a basic understanding of how that campaign went down is vital to understand how the US Army trained, planned and fought later in the war (US tank destroyer doctrine was a direct reaction to that campaign, to take just one example).

For the History Channel to care so little about accuracy and actually informing its viewers is to do said viewers a great disservice.

1. The Constitution does not bar it, either. Rather, I see our founding document as being silent on the matter.

2. It’s enactment is the right thing to do. The arguments against it do not add up to enough to justify the pain its refusal inflicts.

I only looked for about 10 minutes or so, but in their recall of the battle of Midway, all four Japanese carriers were destroyed in six minutes. later, they Russsia’s secret weapon was winter, the winter caused the surrender of the Sixth Army at Stalingrad, and the surrender of the Sixth Army took Hitler by surprise.

Looks like a very carefully constructed Pop version of the history with nothing even slightly controversial or challenging the standard accounts (see the book “Shattered Swords” for a better understanding of Midway for example).

Japan did not have the camera and film industry Germany and even Italy did. Cameras were much more rare in Japan at the time. Moreover, the Japanese forces were often far from the facilities needed to develop film.

Good afternoon Lizards from partly sunny Philadelphia. Some sun, but mainly light overcast and in the 60s. Good day to have the windows open and use a few small fans to move the air around. (Not so good for my allergies.)

Pie is cooling and lamb marinating in the fridge to start making stew around 4pm. So I am resting up a bit before starting on further prep work.

Weekend activities have been hampered by a cold/sinus infection making me feel tired. And a set of bug bites* from last Monday or so are in full allergic reaction as well and make standing up and sitting down a bit painful. Cortisone cream helping a bit, but this too needs to be ridden out.

Since ya’ll are talking about WW2, I started reading The War That Ended Peace: The Road to 1914. It seems to be well written and grabbed my attention from the first page.

Once I’m done with that—it’ll probably take a good long while as I’m a fast reader but have little time for it and it weighs in at almost 800 pages—and have wrapped my head around what happened, then I’ll move on to either From the Ashes of War: The Creation of the Middle East or A Peace to End All Peace: The Fall of the Ottoman Empire and the Creation of the Modern Middle East. Maybe I’ll read both since the former is only 62 pages.

If anyone has recommendations on other books. let me know. Note: I love history, but it needs to read like a novel and I’m not interested in detailed discussion of military strategies or weapons and the like. I want to know how human lives were affected and why.

BTW, A Line in the Sand: The Anglo-French Struggle for the Middle East, 1914-1948 also looks interesting, but I don’t know if I want to invest the time reading 500 pages about it when I have dozens & dozens of other Kindle books on various subjects that I’ve already purchased…

Most likely since I avoided contact with brush while walking around beaches and the state park where Fort Miles used to be that day.

However mites or chiggers I guess are possible since most of the bite action was under clothing at the upper climb limit due to my belt constricting higher access. Militia heads to Oregon gold mine as tensions mount with BLM (VIDEO)

up.anv.bz

In an event reminiscent of the standoff last year between Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and authorities representing the Bureau of Land Management, members of the group known as Oath Keepers have began to set up camp in Josephine County, Oregon, where the owners of a mining claim have become involved in a battle over property rights with the BLM.

The current owners of the Sugar Pine mining claim, who have battled with the BLM for some time now, said their rights to the claim have been grandfathered in, passed down for well over 100 years, but according to reports from a local ABC affiliate, the BLM said the claim’s documents are outdated and since the claim has changed owners at some point in the past, those documents are now obsolete.

However, unlike the Bundy dispute, the BLM isn’t telling the claim owners they must desert their operation altogether.

Jim Whittington, with the Bureau of Land Management, said the mining operations that are currently being performed at the claim are such that require more than just a basic mining claim. Whittington said they must either cut back the operation so that it falls in line with regulations or obtain the proper documents.

However, the owners of the claim are apparently concerned that authorities will shut down their mining operation without due process, and that’s why they called in the Oath Keepers.

“Because we are a constitutional group,” said Mary Emerick with Oath Keepers. “We defend the Constitution … and we are here just to make sure that they receive their Fifth Amendment rights which is due process.”

498 klys (maker of Silmarils)  Apr 19, 2015 12:00:48pm

We currently let religious folks perform a ceremony that has legal implications. They can perform that ceremony without any legal implications too, but the government doesn’t recognize it then. The government only recognizes it if they have the appropriate paperwork, specific to the couple.

In other words, contract law already applies to marriage.

What people are saying is that the contract law should be applied equally. However, because of the conflation of having the paperwork with the religious ceremony, a lot of people feel that their religion gets a say in who should have access to that paperwork.

It doesn’t.

Nothing would change WRT the clergy. If they have the proper paperwork, then the state still recognizes the marriage.

If people want to bring religion into marriage, then let’s make it even-Steven and have religion—not the courts—dictate under what conditions a couple can divorce. Yeah, propose that to the people who claim marriage is a religious institution and you’ll hear all kinds of howling.

Also, if marriage is a religious institution, then why are atheists allowed to marry? Why are people of different religions allowed to marry, regardless of what their respective religions dictate?

I think CL is more correct. For the application of the law - how taxes are determined, who gets to speak for the spouse in an emergency, property ownership - the clergy has no authority. It all has to do with the state. Churches can perform any wedding they want, but it doesn’t count with the government unless the correct paperwork is filed. Right, here in the US we can have a civil ceremony, or a combined civil/religious ceremony. The decision about which is up to the couple.

In England, there is the civil ceremony, and then there can be a separate religious ceremony if the couple chooses. *

DF apparently thought CL was advocating for the complete separation of the civil and religious aspects, requiring all couples to be married in a civil ceremony and then allowing a religious ceremony afterwards.

* Although double checking on this there are apparently churches that can register the marriage with the register office after the religious ceremony, which would be like our combined civil/religious thing. I don’t know if that’s new or was just a misunderstanding on my part previously.

I noticed her using the pedals, now that you’ve taught me what to look for. ;)

Had to chuckle at your description of the chromatics. LOL.

Lever flipping is a bitch.

re: #490 Dark_Falcon

There’s a good argument for that, CL, but I still argument against it. It’s not worth the anger and fear of government such a legal regime of marriage would bring. It would be seen as stripping powers from the clergy and vesting them in the state. And there are places in America where that could lead to major violence, egged on by irresponsible media outlets (Fox News, this means YOU!).

I’d prefer inconsistency to insurrection. I’ll document my concern about that last point in my next post.

We need to stop conflating Holy Matrimony with a civil contract. And clergy should have no say in civil contracts, period. Clergy are under no obligation to perform marriage ceremonies they don’t approve of, so why should we care what they think? And if we refused to acknowledge rights because some object, we’d still have slavery. SMH.

re: #511 klys (maker of Silmarils)

I may be wrong, but I think DF read CL’s comment as saying that we should move to a system like England’s, where the civil ceremony is separate from the religious ceremony.

That’s certainly not how I would read CL’s comment (just that she was emphasizing that the civil and religious aspects are separate, even though they are often conflated) but I could sort of understand how he might get there.

I’m basically saying leave the freaking religion out of it unless it was a religious ceremony—i.e. if you want to be married by your imam, rabbi, priest, whatever and s/he files the appropriate paperwork, then nothing changes (the state still recognizes it). In short, I guess what I’m saying is it should be a constitutional right under our system.

Yes, I have several friends who are vicars in CoE and their “wedding book entries” are filed with the registry office as legal documents.

Our wedding was officiated by a UU minister (friend of my mother’s who had known me since I was 6 months old and only became a minister while I was in college).

That was pretty much the only reason we had a minister involved, because of the family friend aspect.

As a nod to making my mother happy, we included one Bible reading. From Ruth, about how she wouldn’t abandon Naomi.

We also included a reading from the original CA Supreme Court decision allowing SSM in the state, describing what the institution of marriage means to people. We weren’t in anyone’s face about what that case was, but it was my own form of protest about it. Also probably went way over the heads of most of my relatives, who take a …disappointing stance on this issue - but I didn’t want a lot of drama about it, I just wanted us to be able to do something to make our feelings known if you knew where to look.

Oh hey, it turns out that it’s France where the civil ceremony is required and must be performed in the council offices.

Also, there’s other paperwork, like a government-issued certificate.

Lever flipping is a bitch.

Need to build the specific muscle groups to make it easier. Perhaps a targeted exercise such as flipping desks? /

Not surprised considering their insistence on public secularism.

It’s more the whole “do it while in the middle of the song so quickly because you need that hand to play notes again and don’t forget to flip it back or else you’re going to have bad chromatics!”

I’m not very good at fast.

If anyone has recommendations on other books. let me know. Note: I love history, but it needs to read like a novel and I’m not interested in detailed discussion of military strategies or weapons and the like. I want to know how human lives were affected and why.

Are you looking only for WWII? ‘Cause I’d highly recommend the greatest Civil War book ever, Battle Cry of Freedom
There’s enough military stuff to please people who do want that, but also lots of politics and economics and personalities and just everything. Very big on the “why”.
