Special Deal on Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD 7, Today Only: $79

Great Deals • Views: 57,267

I just bought one of these sweet little Android tablets for myself, and you may want to take advantage of this special from Amazon too: Kindle Fire HD 7 - only $79.00. The special offer lasts until the end of the day, and the normal price is $139.00 — so this is an excellent deal on a very nice tablet.

I was just at Amazon looking at that, trying to make up my mind if I should buy it or not.

Can you use it for Twitter & LGF?

2 Charles Johnson  Apr 20, 2015 1:40:40pm

Yes, it runs the Twitter app, and it has a built-in web browser so it should work for LGF.

Does it allow you to use a micro-sd card for more storage or is it only cloud storage? My music makes me … hesitant … to use only cloud storage for any tablet because I don’t trust any company.

Yeah, I hear you. If it were pure android, I’d scrounge the coin today but there are too many compromises to bother with it. I can get locked in by MS or Apple just as easily and with better performing software.

I have mine on my nightstand for late-night web grazing and library books. I got the ‘LiveBrary’ app that allows me to sign in with my library card number and borrow books. Very handy.

And yes, you can use it for LGF - but posting is kind of a PITA due to the virtual keyboard. And long threads take a really long time to load up.

The only weird thing is that if you have multiple tabs open, Silk doesn’t cache them, and when you flip from tab to tab the page actually has to load again.

It’s not bad for articles, but when you get into a 300+-post LGF thread there’s a lot of waiting around.

All these police killings have got to get the American public deeply disturbed and questioning of policing methods and attitudes.

Right? Right???

Tell me they are disturbed. I don’t think our society can take turning a blind eye to all this human carnage in the name of law and order.

If this goes on much longer we are going to start to see the early/mid 60s type riots return. Should that happen, it is going to get real ugly. Add in all the guns and other ‘toys’ and the attitudes of the cops and how pissed off people are getting about the economic times and look out. It is a real bad mix.

Hunter at kos, on John Kasich waiting for a word from God about running for president:

Just once I would like God to tell a Republican governor that maybe he or she ought to focus on getting his or her own house in order…

Does God never tell any of his powerful supplicants that no, actually, they should probably not seek more power? Has there ever been a politician who spoke to God and reported back that God thought they were a crap-out who did not deserve a scrap more attention?

Oh no. Not going commercial are they? That’s Grand Canyon only by extension, not in the actual park I take it? I have been to the Navajo end of the canyon and it is quite spectacular, albeit not as vast. The Indians have broad authority over their lands, dunna how this will work out. Natural beauty may not have stopped any of their casinos from being constructed.

I bought the big Kindle HDX, and kept it for a few months. Loved how speedy it was - but ultimately, the user experience was not cool. Couldn’t load in another browser; app selection was quite limited. And despite how quite and handy it was for consuming content (ie books, mags, movies, music) - all coming from the Kindle store … I just kept feeling that the damn thing was snaking a little robot arm out & rifling thru my wallet.

Everything you do on the Kindle is aimed at pushing you to go to Amazon & spend. I understand that’s how Amazon needs to make $$ off the things, but really, after a while it gets tiresome.

re: #13 William Barnett-Lewis

Does it allow you to use a micro-sd card for more storage or is it only cloud storage? My music makes me … hesitant … to use only cloud storage for any tablet because I don’t trust any company.

I used to think SD cards were essential, but I think that’s changed now. I ditched my HTC One (M8) for a Galaxy S6 and have no regrets. I now have a useless 128GB SD card, but the S6 is so much more responsive, has better LTE reception, and I haven’t needed to access my music collection since I subscribed to Spotify. Between Spotify, NetFlix, Hulu Plus, and the Plex Server in my home, I can access any Audio/Video media I want from anywhere via the cellular network and public WiFi. I mostly use the 64GB in my phone for books and VR apps now.

I use my phone as a WiFi hotspot to allow the same capabilities on a Fire HDX tablet.

re: #20 klys (maker of Silmarils)

I know the Samsungs have SD card slots on at least some models, but Google hasn’t put them on theirs, nor has Amazon.

I’m leery of the Amazon stuff in part because it’s not quite complete Android, but my Nexus 7 has had its share of bugs too, so…

There are a couple of things I can’t run on a Fire tablet due to the lack of the Play Store, but all my main apps are available. It has caused me to pay twice for a few apps, but you get a lot of value for your dollar with a Fire tablet because it’s subsidized by advertising, and is a sales channel for Amazon.

I could root the tablet and install standard Android, but the Fire UI is acceptable to me, so I leave it as-is.

Don’t get me wrong - I really dug how quick the Fire was, and I was able to subscribe to some things (Analog, Asimov’s) that are unavailable on my iPad. But at the end of the day, the Amazon walled garden is even more restrictive than Apple’s. And that’s a damn shame.

I just look at it as a different sort of device than an open tablet. It delivers good value for $ if you’re looking for a device to buy and view media on. If you’re looking for something to display media you’re producing or acquiring on your own, it’s not as good as a regular Android device.

Also noteworthy:

Netflix will run on it, Amazon Prime, TWC, HBO go, Flixster, etc. all work fine.

The nice thing about the Silk browser is that the heavy thinking and transactioning for it takes place in Amazon’s Cloud infrastructure, which makes it fast when on slower networks, like those shared wifi hotspots, etc. Since everything is in the cloud and you are basically only passing pictures and keystrokes, it’s also pretty secure.

It’s also android, so most android apps will load and work fine, it’s only the ones that require full system control from root that give problems.

Welp.
I just ate a pint of Blue Bell mint chocolate chip last night.

I suppose there are worse ways to die.

So…We’ve been using a Logitech Squeezebox internet radio through powered speakers as our main source of radio for the past 8 years. Last week it gave up the ghost, so I talked to my wife and we figured a Kindle with the TuneIn Radio app would be a suitable replacement.

So I just bought one. I clicked from here, so there’s a small bit in it for you, Charles. Thanks to you and C_L for pointing this out - you guys saved us some money!

Be sure and buy a good case for your Kindle Fire. I bought an Otterbox for mine and, though it was expensive, my Kindle is still alive and well after more than two years during which it suffered its share of mishaps.

One other thing: It streams excellent quality video (You’ll need a mini HD to HD cable) to a television set. I hooked mine up to to the set while I was waiting for my Roku and it streamed Netflix, HBO Go and Amazon Prime video no problem.

Judith Miller is a horrible person. Just watched her on Chris Hayes. Nothing redeemed, worst case confirmed.

The notion of conservatives getting drunk on wine, putting on Barry White and having sex to breed makes me want to shut of my computer, run upstairs and put ‘I Wanna Destroy You’ by the Soft Boys on the turntable.

Sexy Conservatives Will Out-Breed Barren Liberals

Schlichter:

“Chelsea Clinton is the archetype, the living result of a transactional marriage between two leftists, lavished with attention and constant reinforcement, a spoiled non-entity who ends up bedecked in Bulgari jewels and a Derek Lam blouse on a magazine cover opining upon life as if she had earned that right by achieving anything on her own. Confusing luck with accomplishments - like mother like daughter.”

I wonder if he knows about Alice Walton?

A conservative male spent all day yesterday writing this garbage. I’m dumber for having read it. Now I think all liberals hate God, country and children.

People are quick to bash Reagan, but you gotta remember, the other side had Jimmy Carter, Ted Kennedy, Walter Mondale, Michael Dukakis, Gerry Brown, …
Not exactly the kind of guys you’d want to trust with the keys of state. But you didn’t have to wait for the Contract with America to bail on the right. Dan Quayle should have done it all by himself. He was Sarah Palin before Sarah Palin. The right was stuck trying to pretend he was somehow fit to take over for H. The real fact was he made H impeachment-proof.

Hmmm…I’m gonna point out that, empirically, Jimmy Carter, Michael Dukakis and Jerry Brown were actually pretty damn good people to hand to keys of state to….and they proved it with management of their states.

Just saying….

‘Morning, all.
