Daredevil Volume 1, Issue 26: “Stilt-Man Strikes Again!”

Also featuring the Masked Marauder
Arts • Views: 42,605

In episode 13 of the amazingly great Netflix Daredevil series, the Stilt-Man costume made an appearance in Melvin Potter’s workshop:

And here’s one of the first appearances of the Stilt-Man character (who will probably be featured in future Marvel productions) in issue #26, published in March 1967, with cover art and pencilling by Gene Colan.

(This cover from the Lizard Collection is in great shape, with super-bright inks and sharp corners.)

All new to me:

“Peter Petruski was working as a research chemist in New York City when he invented an extremely adhesive “multi-polymer” liquid. Creating a paste-gun and calling himself Paste-Pot Pete, he decided to use his invention to commit crimes. Each time he was defeated by the Human Torch— from his initial attempt at stealing a top-secret army missile, to joining forces with the Wizard. Finally jailed, he was given a parole when he helped the Avengers with a solvent to free the city from Baron Heinrich Zemo’s Adhesive X. Using his freedom to develop better weaponry, he was still defeated by the Human Torch and the Thing.”

He doesn’t get paid enough. He doesn’t get paid enough. He doesn’t get paid enough.

My grandson just called and said his van lost its transmission just before he got to his last stop in Winston Salem—where the female co-worker was robbed last week. Said he kept shifting and finally found that first worked a bit and coasted on in to a service station that’s heavily frequented through the night since they have a kitchen and sell food all night. Whew! He said the highway patrol frequents the place. Boss sent a rollback up with another van, he removed the contents from the broken down one into the new, and continued on his way.

So he just called to give me a head’s up and not to worry, that he’d be home in another hour and a half.

Such a sweet, considerate man he is—at 24. I’ve learned not to underestimate him. : )

Payday lender Wonga reports £37.3m loss for 2014

“Last year, it apologised and agreed to pay compensation to customers after using letters from fake legal firms when chasing debts.

“That left it with a compensation bill of £2.6m to be paid to 45,000 customers, not all of whom have been located yet.

“It also had to write off thousands of unsuitable loans. Debts worth £220m from more than 300,000 customers were cancelled, owing to a failure to assess properly whether those borrowers could repay.” More

I hope Andy Haste and his cohorts lose every one of their Savile Row shirts. These are the beasts who prey heavily on the working class and poor, making billions in the process.

Who knew those vile “payday loan” sharks were operating in Europe? I suppose wherever there’s money to steal, they’ll be operating everywhere. Nothing but the modern day version of those “slush funds” that used to operate illegally.

Here’s the latest EXCLUSIVE!!! from gotnwes.com:

EXCLUSIVE: Is University of Al Abama’s Muslim Student Assn a terror factory?

The number of Muslim students at the University of Al Abama may be small, but that doesn’t mean the Muslim Student Association there isn’t manufacturing terrorists by the truck load.

OK, maybe two.

Two people. Not two trucks.

Wait. Make that one.

Thanks to the crack research team at GotNewsDotCom, the world now knows that the University of Al Abama has pumped out two students one student who may or may not have become terrorists as a result of their university experience.

As the campus at Tusc Al Oosa has 36,000 students alone, that’s barely a success rate of 0.0056%. Clearly, the Al Abama Terror Factory is doing a crappy job of training young Muslims for the exciting career of worldwide terrorism, and heads will soon be rolling (literally!) to find a new management team.

Really have zero tolerance for BS today. Especially the Chuckles variety.

That ongoing family medical issue had yet another complication over the weekend and we’ve now got surgery scheduled with the hope that it will help reduce the pain to at least manageable levels (imagine the pain at 15 on a 1-10 scale for extended periods and even the strongest pain meds couldn’t put a dent in the pain). Turned out the pain was coming from a fracture site that will not resolve itself without surgery; it was causing bone pain for a while (think microfractures), but scans didn’t reveal anything until the break was significant enough to show through.

It’s like dealing with a statewide wildfire and going from crisis to crisis.

Ugh. I’ve got good faith in the hospital and the staff there have been fantastic. That’s all I can hope for. Well that and thoughts and prayers (and whatever else I can think of).

Greetings from Battleground Ohio!

Ohio governor John Kasich is getting so close to running for president, I think he is partially in the GOP clown car with only one leg dragging on the road and an arm reaching out to pull the door closed.

Washington Post - John Kasich makes a big move toward a White House run

CONCORD — Ohio Gov. John Kasich Monday took a big step toward a possible 2016 Republican presidential run with the launch of a new a 527 group, the Washington Post and NH1 News in New Hampshire have learned.

The new group is called New Day for America, and one of the biggest political names in New Hampshire — former Sen. John E. Sununu — is serving as a director.

Kasich, who was just re-elected in a landslide last year to a second term as Ohio governor, also served 18 years as a congressman. Last month Kasich made his first visit to the first-in-the-nation primary state since he briefly ran for president in the 2000 cycle.

Kasich returned to the Granite State this past weekend, joining nearly 20 other GOP presidential candidates and potential contenders at a NHGOP Leadership Summit in Nashua that attracted nearly 700 Republican activists.

Kasich urged those in the audience to “think about me, would you. Don’t commit too soon. Let us all have a chance to breath.”

Also serving as advisers on the group are Jo Ann Davidson, the former speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives and current Ohio RNC committeewoman, Phil Geier, former chairman and CEO of the Interpublic Group of Companies, and Bruce Soll, senior vice president and counsel of L Brands.

This story has been updated to correct that the new group is a 527, not a super PAC.

New Day for America 527 Group web site

At the bottom of the New Day web site was this:

Paid for by New Day for America. Not authorized by any candidate or candidate committee. Contributions to New Day for America are not tax deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes.

I guess I need to understand 527 Groups a bit more. It seems pretty clear by the large image and the way it is worded in the WP article the site is a money grabber for Kasich. But, it is not authorized (wink, wink) by Kasich.

I was not surprised to see someone from L Brands involved. L-Brands is operated by the big money man of central Ohio Les Wexner who was behind the Limited…now L Brands (Victoria’s Secret, Bath & Body Works, Pink, La Sensa, Henri Bendel New York).

If I remember correctly, Kasich was always buddies with Wexner.

John E. Sununu is serving as director of his 527 group. Ugh. Easy to see the connections to the establishment GOP there.

Maybe Walker and Kasich will cancel each other out for the backup establishment candidate to take up the slack if Jeb falters.

By the way, heard this morning the big Koch money is set to go to Walker. I guess Scotty is counting that as an early win.

Chipotle’s food sourcing requirements are much stricter than at most fast food joints. They require pork and chicken to come from free-range, antibiotic-free animals, for example. That means they pay more than the normal wholesale price for those meats. I watched a Bloomberg program about the founders a while ago. They’re really committed to serving fresh, healthy food with a minimum of pesticides and antibiotics, and according to the program, very committed to promoting employees to managerial positions. But there was no discussion about entry level pay, IIRC.

Nope. The new AUMF is so dead that several Representatives are insisting that it isn’t. Congress has declined from being unable to declare war to being unable to vote an AUMF.

In Rodriguez v. United States, Eighth Circuit is vacated and remanded.

Absent reasonable suspicion, police extension of a traffic stop to conduct a dog sniff violates the Constitution’s shield against unreasonable seizures. A routine traffic stop is more like a brief stop under Terry v. Ohio than an arrest under Arizona v. Johnson.

I don’t have UA gear, but similar gear from other makers, and it’s great for hiking/outdoors to layer up/down. Keeps you comfortable and dry, no matter how active you’re being. And the gear we’ve got is super light, so it makes packing a breeze.

Yeah, I remember North Face having some of that for hiking way back. And UA seems to target sports enthusiasts mainly, from the products I’ve seen online, but I can see people who work outdoors all the time, like Mr. BWS, using it also.

At the bottom of the New Day web site was this:

I guess I need to understand 527 Groups a bit more. It seems pretty clear by the large image and the way it is worded in the WP article the site is a money grabber for Kasich. But, it is not authorized (wink, wink) by Kasich.

[snip]

NPR was going over this this morning (I listen to WKSU, Kent State Univ. station). They kind of explained that the 527 groups can use the money to push for/against issues but not directly support a candidate (again, wink wink).

This is just the latest development of “Just because you bought it doesn’t mean that you own it.” You can bet that there will be more to come.

I can foresee a lot of EULA coming down the line where it spells out that you are “leasing” software or hardware instead of actually purchasing it. With the follow-on that therefore your modification rights are heavily restricted.

Google search has a newfound love for mobile-friendly sites

cnet.com

Google is making changes to the machinery of its mobile searches that will reward websites deemed mobile-friendly and penalize those that are not.

As of Tuesday, Google is updating the way it looks at the design of mobile websites as a way to determine how a site ranks in its mobile search results. The more mobile-friendly the site, the higher it will likely appear in the search results on a mobile device, specifically on a smartphone.

(snip)

More often than before, people are searching and surfing the Web from mobile devices — around 60 percent of online traffic is now generated by mobile devices, according to published reports. As such, websites need to ensure that their content can be easily viewed and navigated by mobile users. Through its new search algorithm, Google is offering a wake-up call to website owners. Sites penalized by Google for not being mobile-friendly could find a dip in users and a potentially a dip in sales. More

The driver had a concealed-carry permit and acted in the defense of himself and others, Assistant State’s Attorney Barry Quinn said in court Sunday.

It took a few spins for me to like “What Kind of Man”. I don’t care for the beginning of the song, but once the guitars start in I can dig it. The only misfire I’ve heard so far is “St. Jude” because it feels long and ponderous. Of course, I felt that way about “Seven Devils” on the Ceremonials album and I eventually came to like the song. It was just a matter of time. The scale of the operation demands it at this point.

It’s funny - I know a lot of bluegrass musicians here on Long Island, and most of them have never listened to a note of Mumford. I know this because I asked a lot of them what they thought of Mumford’s use of modern production techniques in the recording of what was essentially bluegrass.

They don’t seem to garner much attention at all among the purists.

I’m still trying to figure out how this one works, because it looks like what’s happening is there are two double rainbows (check how the curves parallel each other). What I don’t understand is the how - is there a second light source? Different rainstorms diffracting to produce the different angles on the rainbows? Second one is probably more likely.

I need someone who is more awake and better versed in the atmospheric physics that would produce this.

Reflection isn’t quite the right word, but I know what you mean. And if you look, that’s the case: you have two that are the proper color order and two that are reversed.

I have seen a triple - the third is typically very faint but the colors are in the proper order again, and it parallels the first two.

skullsinthestars.com

The rays from the double rainbow come back at a more extreme angle than those of the primary rainbow: by my calculation, they make an angle of about 50° with respect to the incoming ray. This means that the double rainbow lies outside of the primary rainbow, as one can see from experience. The colors will also be reversed, as we can see by posting the primary rainbow figure right next to the comparable double rainbow figure.

The double rainbow will be naturally dimmer than the primary rainbow. Every time light is reflected inside the drop, part of it “leaks” out of the droplet and is lost. The more times it bounces around inside, the more light is lost.

With that in mind, we can ask: are there higher rainbows? In fact, it is possible on rare occasions to see the tertiary and quaternary (3rd and 4th) rainbows, caused by light bouncing around 3 and 4 times within the rain droplet, respectively! However, these bounces cause the light to exit the drop traveling roughly in the same direction that it entered. This means that the tertiary and quaternary rainbows can only be seen when the raindrops are between the sun and the observer.

Chrono-Synclastic Infundibulum

Chrono-Synclastic Infundibulum was a strange dimension where everything became one and everything and one was right. Those who passed through it became Chrono-Synclastic Ifundibulated, and had strange side-effects. They could see in all three normal dimensions, but also in time. They were able to see the past, present, and future all together. Those who were caught in it or “unstuck in time” would appear at different places for certain amounts of time. A prime example of a victim was William Niles Rumfoord, who would appear on Earth every 59 days for one hour. He also would appear on Mars, Mercury, Betelgeuse, and Titan. He was able to see what was happening in different places at all times, but was not able to know everything. The sensation has been described as “being everywhere at once”.

I saw this on Gawker. Apparently this was sent to only 4 people (like, oh I dunno GRANDPARENTS) just to make sure there isn’t duplicate gifting. Then it got out into the wild Internets.

I have asked my kids what they want for their kids’ birthdays so I don’t get them something that they already have (that I already bought for them) and so that I get something that’s age-appropriate.

I just found out that my grandson (who isn’t even 4 yet) like to do 100-pc puzzles, the 24-pc Doug & Melissa puzzles that I got for him at Hanukkah are “too easy”

Buy him four of them and mix up the pieces in advance?

Yes, and they get together to discuss legalism in an org called “ZETA” which is comprised of zoophiles. It still goes on in the US, people are charged to have access to farm animals, for instance, by those who accommodate them

This is a case that happened in WA state in 2005 and got a lot of attention because the man who was utilizing a horse for sex died from acute peritonitis due to perforation of the colon.

Good eye! That’s a Stratocaster pickup from a 70s Strat that I had in the bottom of the pickup box. I figured I’d try something a little different with this one - plus the old Tele neck pickup I had didn’t work when I wired it up. :)

“Accordingly, with 1.275 million additional women never getting married, nearly 900,000 more children of the next generation would be aborted as a result of their mothers never marrying,” he wrote.

Schaerr added that same-sex marriages would effectively be wiping out a population equal to “the entire population of the cities of Sacramento and Atlanta combined.”

“Accordingly, with 1.275 million additional women never getting married, nearly 900,000 more children of the next generation would be aborted as a result of their mothers never marrying,” he wrote.

I don’t know either. It would probably be some kind of light reflection - like say off a glass building or something reflective to cause the reflection at a different angle.

Or, perhaps it’s some manner of artifact from the camera taking the photo.

I’d lean towards multiple reflections - the primary and secondary rainbows are those on the right side of the image, and the reflections are those other two we see at angles different from the primary one.

I just sold a Paul Reed Smith with P-90s to finance getting the Fender Tele, so I need another one to even things out again. :)

I like the idea of an esquire body with a P90 - A Telecaster Jr of sorts :)

In a decision that effectively recognizes chimpanzees as legal persons for the first time, a New York judge today granted a pair of Stony Brook University lab animals the right to have their day in court. The ruling marks the first time in U.S. history that an animal has been covered by a writ of habeas corpus, which typically allows human prisoners to challenge their detention. The judicial action could force the university, which is believed to be holding the chimps, to release the primates, and could sway additional judges to do the same with other research animals.
