LA Times Calls on California Lawmakers to Pass Vaccination Bill Despite Anti-Science Parents

The Los Angeles Times editorial board is calling out the state legislature for caving in to the demands of the deluded, selfish anti-vaccination movement: California Lawmakers Should Pass the Vaccination Bill.

Anti-vaccination parents showed up last week in Sacramento threatening to leave the public schools en masse, and the Senate Education Committee crumbled like a batch of overbaked cookies. Sen. Richard Pan (D-Sacramento), who has written legislation that would mandate vaccines for almost all public school students, was forced to take back his bill for revision.

“The penalty for not immunizing their kids is you either have to home-school or take your kids out of public schools, and I don’t think that’s a solution to the problem,” committee Chairwoman Carol Liu (D-La Cañada Flintridge) told Pan during last week’s meeting. If that’s so, why does California even bother to have the weak vaccination requirement that’s already on the books? It’s meaningless if the state folds as soon as parents object.

BTW, the grass around here is so high, we have a mosquito infestation. Now the Munchkin isn’t going to have a place to play except the patio and that’s iffy.

And this county won’t do a thing about it, because I called. In Charlotte, they wouldn’t allow grass to get this high—they’d send out a city crew and charge you for it.

Screw that Clown Car Real Estate Mgmt Co, we’re leaving as soon as our lease is up, maybe before if we find something in the next few weeks. We don’t expect to get our security deposit back anyway because it just seems to be nothing but a money thing for the new owner anyway.

These anti-vaxxers will get people killed from their refusal to vaccinate themselves or their kids.

Allowing communicable diseases that can and should be eradicated to continue to blossom because they refuse to vaccinate themselves borders on the criminal.

There are a lot of people who cannot get vaccinated because of medical reasons (immune compromised as say someone going through chemotherapy and other cancer therapies, infants and toddlers who are not able to be immunized or are too young to be fully protected, and the elderly/infirm whose vaccinations/immunity is waning.

These people are put at risk because someone thinks that their kid shouldn’t be vaccinated or that it’s somehow safer to get measles than to get the vaccination, even though there are thousands of measles deaths annually worldwide. There are serious complications here in the US every year from measles. Ditto for mumps, chicken pox, and every other disease for which a vaccination is available.

Heck, there are now vaccinations that can prevent certain cancers - the HPV vaccine now protects against a bunch of strains of cervical and other related cancers. If you know anyone who has cancer, you know how much EVERY SINGLE ONE WOULD KILL FOR THE ABILITY TO HAVE BEEN VACCINATED SO THEY’D NEVER HAVE TO EXPERIENCE IT. EVER.

Yet, you’ve got people who cast about and claim that the vaccinations will somehow increase promiscuity or other BS, and instead they needlessly expose people to a disease that can be avoided.

Eliminate all but the medical exemption for vaccinations. MS and WV only allow medical exemptions for vaccinations. This should be the national standard. We’re talking about a public health crisis, where a plane ride can expose tens of thousands of people to these diseases (see the Disneyland outbreak with cases reported on the East Coast shortly thereafter traced back to Disneyland).

Fuck the anti-vaxxers.

I would hate to see the following scenario, but it is the only thing that might knock some sense into a lot of heads: Parents desert en masse to private schools which are then hit by a by a measles outbreak.

This is a public health law. No exceptions that endanger lives.

Very touching story on Slate a few days ago by a mother whose 1-year-old got the MMR vaccination. He did get one of the more serious side effects, whose name I can’t pronounce or remember, which is quite serious but treatable. Baby fine now. The odds? One in 40,000.

Risk of death or serious incapacity from measles, way worse than that. In the ’20s, 50,000 measles deaths a year. By the ’50s, 5,000 — that decrease was from simple public health and prompt hospitalization if the child got a fever over 104, I believe it was, or got convulsions.

Watched a documentary on VICE a few weeks ago where a genetically modified measles virus is quite effective against at least one form of cancer. Science moves on.

Wow, you guys have to watch this. An Iranian woman rejects a suitor; he throws acid in her face as revenge, blinding & disfiguring her. She demands “an eye for an eye” justice from the court. They tell her that since she’s a woman and only “worth half”, she can only demand that he be blinded in one eye. Yeah, one of the Munchkin’s teacher’s assistants, who I like a lot, said to me yesterday when I told her of the impending storm, “I’ll just leave it up to god. Whatever happens, happens.” I thought that was a pretty fatalistic attitude. I didn’t realize she was even religious.

That was dumb, I was a wingnut then and I didn’t realize how horrible they really were.

Yesterday I sent them a notice that the foundation is withdrawing from their project and I am resigning from their Board of Trustees and please remove my name and the name of my foundation from all correspondence, letterhead, and promotional materials print and digital.

Well needless to say they are shocked SHOCKED at this sudden breakup and why oh why did I have to be so rude?

Do I owe them an explanation other than “because reasons”

The US had large losses due to measles, and later polio.

This is akin to the lack of appreciation for what really went on in the 18th and 19th century regarding Native Americans and what I do think can be called genocide.

We put the past out of our minds, and sometimes that might work, but in the case of communicable diseases I’m pretty sure it won’t.

You’re probably right, I’m in my mid 50’s, so my parents had a vivid memory of those losses and as a teen my next door neighbors were both in wheelchairs due to polio.

We have mandatory vaccinations here in NC, but I’m going to ask tomorrow if any of the kids in the Munchkin’s class are not vaccinated for any religious reason (which can be an exception here). Then, I will repeat doing that as long as I’m around for future grades. And I will raise a stink about it to get him transferred to a class where all the kids have had the required vaccinations.

If her writing style is anything like her tweets, it should be a good read. Strange thing is, I have never been that big on non-fiction and am looking forward to reading this book.

About 10 years ago my non-profit web archive agreed to participate in a history project sponsored by Liberty University.

That was dumb, I was a wingnut then and I didn’t realize how horrible they really were.

Yesterday I sent them a notice that the foundation is withdrawing from their project and I am resigning from their Board of Trustees and please remove my name and the name of my foundation from all correspondence, letterhead, and promotional materials print and digital.

Well needless to say they are shocked SHOCKED at this sudden breakup and why oh why did I have to be so rude?

Do I owe them an explanation other than “because reasons”

Nope, but on the other hand, a list of all the stupid things they support and your foundation don’t, might encourage them to remove you even faster. It might even help if your foundation posts a public notice that you are rescinding your support and why.

Just my 2 cents.

We have mandatory vaccinations here in NC, but I’m going to ask tomorrow if any of the kids in the Munchkin’s class are not vaccinated for any religious reason (which can be an exception here). Then, I will repeat doing that as long as I’m around for future grades. And I will raise a stink about it to get him transferred to a class where all the kids have had the required vaccinations.

Why bother? The kid still has to mingle with the general population at the school. Raise bloody hell until vaccination rates meet the CDC guidelines for all the kids.
