Republican Congressman Confronted by Extreme Anti-Immigrant Protesters, Threatens to Punch Them Out

This is one of those stories in which everybody involved sucks.

California Republican Rep. Stephen Knight was recently confronted by anti-immigrant protesters from the group “We The People Rising” at his office in Simi Valley, and the conversation got so heated that Knight threatened to fight one of the protesters.

“You told me you didn’t vote for amnesty and you did. I looked it up on the Internet. You lied to me,” a protester named Mike told Knight, before patting the congressman on the shoulder and walking away.

Knight, an Army veteran and longtime Los Angeles police officer, went over to the protester and confronted him.

“Mike, Mike,” Knight says. “Hey, if you touch me again, I’ll drop your ass. All right? Don’t, don’t touch me. Don’t, don’t touch me. Don’t touch me.”

“One more time, Mike,” he added.

Note that “We The People Rising” is not just an ordinary group; they have extensive connections to white supremacist organizations, and were involved in the ugly demonstrations in the California town of Murrieta last year, in which protesters screamed hateful insults at buses full of immigrant families. These people are so extreme they consider Rep. Knight, who is a far right conservative in every way, to be a “RINO.”

Here are some of Knight’s right wing bona fides: Steve Knight (Politician).

He supported Proposition 8, which was ruled unconstitutional by SCOTUS on June 26, 2013. Knight opposed bilingual education, and voted against the images of the Confederate flag being removed from state property. Knight has consistently voted against increasing the minimum wage, gun control, and water regulations for the city.

This is where the Republican Party has ended up in 2015; the agenda is increasingly being set by overt white supremacists and xenophobic extremists.

Republicans from now until the demise of the party will be threatened the way this guy was - ‘We’re gonna vote you out when your term is up.’

You made that bed, guys. Enjoy sleeping in it, until you’re deemed insufficiently pure of heart and replaced by a ‘purer’ candidate.

So, how do we stop it? I try to educate people. They still talk to me anyway.

I had to school a guy on disability who lives here because he got a letter (I’ll probably get one, too), that SS recipients with a certain income limit will not have their premium for doctor’s visits paid by the State starting next year. He blamed it on “Obamacare”.

The reason? NC is one of the states that refused to expand Medicaid under Republican leadership and I told him that. So all those people in the State who receive under something like $1300/mo will have to start paying.

Support for Prop. 8 wasn’t unusual. It did, after all, get a majority of the votes cast on the issue. The best evidence that someone is extreme whatever-wing is that he supports something so far out that it has next to no support at the national level. [At the time the vote was taken.]

Bilingual education isn’t a RW-LW issue. It’s a technical issue. Do kids fare better in the long run if they spend a while intensively learning English and then take their other courses in English, or do they fare better if their English education is gradual and in the meantime they take their other courses in the language spoken at home?

The answer might depend on how old they are when they start. It might depend on how gradual gradual is, and on whether the bilingual education ever actually gets around to where they can go mainstream. There will inevitably be instances where what has been called “bilingual” education turns out badly for most of the students in a school system, and who wouldn’t oppose that?

As to the answer to this technical question, my hunch is that immersion is best. That’s how the army works it, after all. And Berlitz.

The minimum wage is another technical issue. It should be clear to one and all that at some point, a minimum wage law can set wages so high that businesses despair of breaking even, give up, and close rather than go broke paying more than they can afford.

In Sweden, people do a lot more of their own work than in the US for just this reason. You may not be much good at putting furniture together, but you don’t have to pay yourself minimum wage and you don’t have to pay taxes on that wage you don’t pay yourself. This has an egalitarian upside but it has the downside that there’s little formal employment to be had in assembling furniture and a lot of people who could get more done working at something they’re actually good at end up slogging through the furniture assembly.

Minimum wage laws are just one way, and probably not even second best among the choices, for raising the living standard of the working poor. The Earned Income Tax Credit, which should be liberalized and phased out slower, would do a better job of it, by me.

And then we come to the Confederate Flag. That’s a horse of a different color. I won’t even bother to try to construct an excuse or an explanation for that one.

Same thing here in Pennsylvania. I told people to go to Evil Obamacare Site and check out the prices for your county with your total income in Pennsylvania. Then I told them to type in Shelby county Kentucky with the same income and come back and tell me how great your Tom Corbett is. In a few days Governor Wolf will expand Medicaid and undo that turd Corbett dropped on his way out. All Obamas fault.

Uh, I beg to differ. Bilingual education is absolutely a right/left issue. There’s a simple reason why every conservative politician opposes it, and it has nothing to do with improving education. The opposition is driven by xenophobia, and it’s obvious in everything they say about it.

I’ve been following this issue for years and the idea that conservatives give a rip about improving education is laughable.

I’ve always been a bit torn on at-will employment. On the one hand, freedom to freely discharge employees allows corporations to improve efficiency easily (by way of layoffs, or by simply firing someone they find underperforming without going through the hassle of detailed documentation, performance improvement plans, etc.) On the other hand, it is so ripe for abuse and so incredibly slanted in favor of the employers, and as someone being employed rather than doing the employing, is constantly in the back of my head as I go about my work.

However, I don’t particularly want the brand of “sex is bad mmkay” that the church collectively is trying to sell, either.

Did anyone catch President Obama on Hard Ball tonight?

The President is pretty strong in his support of the TPP trade bill and was pretty adamant that people like Senators Elizabeth Warren and Sherrod Brown (One of my Senators) aren’t really reading the bill’s details and listening to the meetings they have had on it all. He more or less said he understood they had a political role to play and they also had to deal with the bad trade bills in the past that make everyone very wary of any new trade packages.

The man can be damn convincing. He was very strong in mentioning that this is the Pacific and it is being overrun by China’s heavy hand and if we do not compete with a fair play, then China will unfairly bump the U.S. out of the market.

Also, lots of talk about how it makes for fairer markets with people like Japan and South Korea.

I guess I need to hear more on the whole thing and it will be interesting to hear what people like Warren have to say to the President’s new criticism of her stance.

If it’s less than 5-6 hours, I figure driving is as efficient as flying, since I’m 2 hours from a nearby major airport. I can get Amtrak to Chicago (but not St. Louis) easily. Anything more, I have to fly, simply because Amtrak lines are so convoluted.

We like riding trains. If you also do, this website is a fantastic resource. The Trans-Siberian Route is on the list at some point - we actually want to try to pull off an around-the-world trip without planes (and not by cheating and just booking an around-the-world cruise, although we may cave and do a leg of that for the Pacific transit).

You can get around the world without a plane or ship, if you’re a whacked Australian with an army surplus jeep.

state Rep. Craig. Fitzhugh (D) first offered an amendment to HB 977 that would allow doctors to exempt patients from the waiting period for mental health reasons.

That amendment was immediately tabled by Butt.

“Putting this psychological harm bypass into the bill is really a loophole for the abortion industry,” she said. “It allows someone who is going to profit from abortion to get the waiting period waived.”

A second amendment put forth by Fitzhugh would have allowed women who become pregnant through rape or incest to be exempted from the 48 hour waiting period.

Butt, however, suggested that the victims could be lying about being raped.

“This amendment appears political,” Butt asserted. “Because we understand in most instances, this is not verifiable. Let’s make sure that these women have the information and the understanding to act.”

Pennsylvania high schoolers wear matching flannel, hang hateful posters on ‘Anti-Gay Day’

A band of Pennsylvania high schoolers in matching flannel shirts slapped hateful poster on gay students’ lockers and drafted a “lynch list” to mark their self-concocted 𠇊nti-Gay Day,” students said.

As many as 100 students at Claysville’s McGuffey High School took part in the Thursday protest a day after the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance held its Day of Silence. GSA’s day was organized to draw attention to and condemn bulling against gay students, according to the Observer-Reporter.

The homophobic students, mostly boys, wore flannel shirts on the same day and wrote 𠇊nti-gay” and drew crosses on the backs of their hands. The group stuck intimidating posters on gay students’ lockers and scuffled with Gay-Straight Alliance members and their supporters, student Zoe Johnson told WPXI.

“Yesterday, there was pushing, posters hung on homosexual students’ lockers. Teachers were having to run out and take them down,” she said.

This kind of shit really makes me crazy.

They think that whatever the President does, it’s wrong, lazy, or treasonous. Look at the golfing example. They constantly whine that President Obama plays too much golf, while they were happy to defend Bush for taking monthlong vacations and clearing brush or mountain biking. But what do they want, a president who doesn’t exercise and doesn’t take any time off for eight years? What could possibly explain such a glaring double standard? Similarly, they had no problems with Bush or Reagan flying around the world or the country doing presidential things. Whenever Obama travels anywhere, they’re furious. They expect him to never go anywhere and never say anything.

Don’t even get me started about that freakout when he wanted to address school kids about the importance of staying in school and wingnut parents took their kids out of school so they wouldn’t get those socialist cooties.

These people are nuts.

Denver to SF is gorgeous. I’ve posted some photos from that route in the past.

The Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, and Southwest Chief are all on the to-do list at some point.

I wish I weren’t so motion-sensitive. I just can’t deal with any kind of motion where I can’t stop and get off if it gets to be too much. So I can just barely manage a local commuter train that stops every 5 minutes. Express? Not so much.

I discovered last month that I can feel the motion on an aircraft carrier that is docked in a very quiet bay. (USS Midway-actually way more interesting than I would have thought.) But really, who feels motion on a %$# parked aircraft carrier? Yeah. Me.

Yes, they do help, but they have limitations. You need to start hours ahead of time, so they aren’t for the casual 2 hour trip, and they reduce but don’t eliminate the feeling of motion. Also, you need a prescription, so they’re probably great for something like a cruise, but not for ‘everyday’ situations.

Edit: In my case motion results in a feeling of falling and being unable to reduce or change the motion leads to panic attacks, so it is a bit more complex than most people’s motion issues.

I have had occasional times when driving was a problem, but if I’m driving, or even riding with a friend or family member, if I have a problem I can slow down a bit, or ask the driver to slow down. It is an intermittent problem so just a brief reduction of motion is usually enough and then I’ll be OK.

It is a pain. I can take Dramamine and tolerate mass transit as long as the motion varies and there are stops every few minutes, but I don’t enjoy it. If I flew more, I’d be OK with that, but I have very few occasions to do so, so flying is very difficult for me, but way better than boats or trains.

In any event, belated birthday gifts (through no fault of the giver) are usually acceptable, as are early gifts.

What.the.fuck?

First, Lindsey’s whole “gee those Jews are good with money” stereotype message here isn’t even trying to be subtle. Second, this a just a gigantic promise of quid pro quo and official corruption, “pay me money and you’ll have representation in my cabinet.” Third, pro-Israel funding doesn’t actually mean Jewish donations. It mostly means catering to a lot of hyper dispensationalist Christian nutjobs. So literally everything about his statement is grotesque.

Taking action as gun violence captures particular attention across the state and especially in Milwaukee, the state Senate on Tuesday approved a repeal of the state’s two-day waiting period for handgun purchases, sending the bill to the Assembly on a voice vote.

Current state law prohibits consumers from taking a handgun from the store until 48 hours after a background check is started, with that waiting period extended three additional days in certain cases. Under the bill proposed by Sen. Van Wanggaard (R-Racine) and supported by Gov. Scott Walker, handgun purchasers could take possession of them as soon as they clear state background checks that with today’s technology typically take a matter of hours.

“There’s no statistical evidence that it reduces violence whatsoever,” Wanggaard said of the so-called cooling off period.

166 William Barnett-Lewis  Apr 21, 2015 11:53:12pm

Two thoughts:
1) it can only have any effect on the first purchase. As has been noted here, many if not most gun owners have more than one firearm already.
, 2) this will be very popular in the rural parts of the state and will possibly be enough to counter Walker’s urban unpopularity much as his signing of the CCL law gave him the extra votes that carried him in the recall election.

Wiser than I am, I guess.

It’s fear — and fear-mongering — driving people to demand they be permitted to carry weapons wherever they go. They’re afraid of immigrants, Muslims, gays, liberals, Obama, blacks, independent women — that’s just a partial list. I guess they cling to their weapons as some kind of “security blanket” to scare off the baddies.

It would be a lot safer for the rest of us if they’d switch to rabbit’s feet, St. Christopher medals, or crosses. For all the RW pronouncements of faith in God, the nutters don’t seem to have a lot of confidence in Him protecting them.

They would make you into a 2nd class citizen, too, you godless heathen, you.

It’s not even a question of 2nd class citizenship. They want to reduce women into chattel, with no rights of their own. They would be expected to go from dependence on daddy, to dependence on husband, then son, etc.

I just watched CCJ’s interview with Jeremiah True. Talk about two guys being all butthurt about not be able to get laid whenever and with whomever they want. True even advised young men not to go to college, especially a liberal arts college like Reed, until the government (!?) tells colleges to put an end to what he says is a “rape culture” mythos.

UpChuck of course managed to work in mentions of Jackie Coakley, Emily Renda and U Va — twice even.

It bugs me whenever I see Emily Renda’s name, because I know another Emily Renda who’d be just a few years older than the UVa Renda. I had to go a-googling to make sure they weren’t the same woman.

Both True and Johnson sure do love their Aristotle and Plato, I’d say. Two birds of a feather.

Do we want to revive the middle class and enlarge it or not? Do we want our children and future children to get a good education? How do we protect workers? Should we get beyond 20th century thinking about who American workers are, such as industrial types and concentrate on what is increasingly becoming a service economy of both “white” collar and “blue” collar workers in organizing efforts without sacrificing those in traditional unions?

The world is changing and we have to change our thinking about how our society is structured or the rest of the world will sail on without us. We’ve already seen how unregulated trade has worked as mfgrs have shipped jobs overseas, taking advantage of both cheap foreign labor and decimating mfg in the US. Time to try something else and work on enlightening those who see education as a worthless exercise as well. We should be excelling in science, technology, and other advanced thinking without neglecting those who need help in achieving a decent living as well, putting political differences aside. We simply can’t “rest on our laurels” because we’ve experienced what that means.

SpaceX has discovered what caused its Falcon 9 rocket to crash land and explode

The rocket fell on its side because the legs could not support its weight. The landing legs are designed to help keep the rocket upright, but are not strong enough to either support the rocket if it lands too fast and hard on the platform or prevent it from tipping once that process has begun.

Perhaps they would be better off with a launch facility at White Sands and recovering on land?

Don’t think landing on the barge is in and of itself the problem. If the legs are buckling under the stress of landing on the barge, they would probably do so on land. Wonder what material they are using for the legs.

Nothing on here about the composition of the legs, but the tanks are an aluminum-lithium alloy.

The barge is in constant motion. If it’s coming up as the stage is coming down, the stresses on the legs will be greater and probably asymmetric as well.

Material, I’d bet on aviation grade aluminum.

Something you don’t see every day:

Delays were caused on a busy stretch of motorway earlier “due to a dog taking control of a tractor”.

The bizarre incident was reported by Traffic Scotland at J13 of the M74 near Abington in South Lanarkshire.

It later emerged that a sheepdog called Don, owned by a local farmer, had leaned on the controls of a tractor, taking it from a field on to the road.

Police and the farmer later recovered Don, who was unhurt, and the tractor, from the central reservation.

(Traffic Scotland’s twitter TL tweets and replies are pretty funny about this incident.)

191 Justanotherhuman  Apr 22, 2015 4:15:28am

re: #190 Backwoods_Sleuth

That’s hilarious! So is this:

Michelle Muirhead asked: “Will the dog have points on his licence? Was he breathalysed? Did police arrest him?”

No doubt the farmer left the tractor running and “Don”, used to the thing, thought he’d go for a solo ride.

True about the barges motion. That is way the previous attempt was scrapped. Sea was to rough for a successful landing

Not being an engineer, I can’t say for sure, but wouldn’t a titanium alloy of some sort be a better albeit, more expensive, choice? You get the benefits of light weight and strength over that of aviation grade aluminum.

“A key upgrade to enable precision targeting of the Falcon 9 all the way to touchdown is the addition of four hypersonic grid fins placed in an X-wing configuration around the vehicle, stowed on ascent and deployed on reentry to control the stage’s lift vector. Each fin moves independently for roll, pitch and yaw, and combined with the engine gimbaling, will allow for precision landing - first on the autonomous spaceport drone ship, and eventually on land.”

Their ultimate plan is to push the stage backward and land near the launch site. That would eliminate the problem of the barge moving up and down. They depend exclusively on GPS for both the rocket and the barge—there’s no communication between them or radar or anything like that on the rocket.

GPS is only accurate to ±3 meters—which is fine horizontally, but may be too coarse vertically, especially with up-and-down motion by the barge. Then there’s the matter of throttle response. They only plan on three short burns to reduce speed to a survivable point before landing, not continuously regulating the thrust till touchdown. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they’d thought this whole thing out sufficiently, but now I don’t know.

It has to have some sort of altimeter. If it isn’t using radar, then I suspect that it is using some sort of atmospheric pressure sensor. But I could be wrong and it uses a cut off switch on the landing gear to tell the computer it has touched down.

If you are even considering a run for the WH, that’s a question that Americans deserve to have answered. If you punt, you’re not presidential material. This isn’t an issue you can weasel out of.

Foreign policy and warmaking is an essential and critical aspect of being president. If you can’t tell people your views on a lengthy conflict entered into by a prior president, you have no business in the WH. Yeah, you might not win a lot of support from your fellow GOPers, but all Americans deserve to know what you think - because it informs as to what you might do going forward.

This is just another symptom of the GOP clown crazy train (because a car simply isn’t big enough to hold that amount of crazy).

Very interesting report about how US DOE facilities, including Livermore and Oak Ridge didn’t just model out Iran’s nuclear program, but duplicated aspects of it and came up with ways to transition it from a potential nuclear weapons facility to a research oriented one. That’s about twice as fast as China’s fastest high speed rail trains. I’m impressed.

A while ago, I mentioned the new high speed rail service from a city about 90 minutes from here to Changsha and points south and east. It took 1h40m from Huaihua to Changsha; the bus ride is about 6h and the regular train almost 8. To build this rail line, they had to tunnel through several mountains, which is why the westward extension to Kunming is going to take quite a while to complete. HSR rights of way avoid steep inclines, so the only way to go is through the mountain ranges running through this part of China.

These people are so extreme they consider Rep. Knight, who is a far right conservative in every way, to be a “RINO.”

Pretty much. I think the big hullabaloo is over the fact he didn’t want this guy brought up in the show as he was embarrassed by him.Hell, we all have relatives, living and dead that are an embarrassment to the family. That’s why we generally try to keep them confined to the attic or cellar.

I have the same situation among mine, as well. But my slave-owning ancestors were Quakers, and manumitted their slaves in the 1700s, and my enthralled ancestors were Swedes.

Enthrallment was a pretty bad deal, from what I can gather. Almost like slavery, because there was little hope of escaping servitude. No wonder so many Swedes and Norwegians emigrated.

As annoying and full of bullshit as American debates are, they’ve got a few things going for them, like an audience. The debate I watched took place in an empty studio with all the candidates standing at podiums in front of a white screen. The moderator would tell them what the topic was and then go down the line for each party’s candidate to articulate their position on that topic. Then they’d get another round to be able to respond to anything that someone else said. Once that was done, they’d move on to the next topic.

Well, yes. It was a lot more policy driven, but there’s a reason for that. Mexican election law actually prevents them from attacking each other directly in ads. They have to either dance around any allegations or just talk about the party that the candidate they’re attacking is from. And since they’re all going to want to use a soundbite from the debate in their official ads, they’re very limited in what they can and can’t say.

FWIW, they also all create fake unofficial ad campaigns that are designed to look like cheap DIY “concerned citizen” videos, but that’s another story. Hah.

Some company spokesperson needs a refresher.

Consumer Reports says the safety risk is low and the magazine does not know of any reported injuries. Even so, no grill should have this flaw, Nanni told NBC News. And none of the other 136 grills tested did.

The editors shared their findings with Brinkmann. The company said the Patio Grill meets industry safety standards and does not pose a risk. Even so, the company told Consumer Reports it made design improvements to prevent any burner from going out and the change has been made at the factory for future production.

Gas Grill fails safety test

Sort of translates as “Our grill is not a risk and meets the standards. We’ll fix it anyways.”

Those who hide the most behind “the thin blue line” are often those who least deserve said protection.

It’s pretty common in most groups and communities unfortunately. So in reality, you could be waiting 18 months between raises. In the mean time, they’d just keep dumping more and more responsibilities on your head so they could have you work virtually any shift.

Underemployment is another issue. And it’s something I’ve struggled with. Wingnuts think the guy working the fast food counter is just some bum who didn’t work hard enough in college but underemployment does happen and I blame a lot of it on wingnut jackass employers who refuse to take chances on people.

I’ve noticed most of those who push the “work harder” line are Boomers whose most recent familiarity with minimum wage labor was hectoring the kid at the McDonald’s for there being pickles on their burger. They seem to think, almost to a person, that things are just as they were in the 60s and 70s, between the ease of finding a job (“Just walk in and ask!”), the ease of getting a raise (“Just work hard!”), and the affordability of basic necessities (“You kids don’t know how good you got it!”).

In a world of 7 billion people and millions of robots and billions of machines, a single person’s labor isn’t so important.

And thus, that is how said laborer is treated.

We have to look at our society with an eye of how we want to live the rest of our lives and how we want the next generation to start off.

That’s why I think we ought to focus more on taxes than wages. Money is not a physical substance but an abstract expression of power. The increasing share of the total wealth into fewer hands means a smaller group of people are gaining more power over the majority.

It’s my position that we need to recycle that wealth through massive re-investment in infrastructure designed to be sustainable.

We’re fighting an uphill battle here, as the current way of life started with agriculture and that means control over land like the hunter-gatherers never could conceive. He who owns the land rules, and the real problem with 7, moving to 10, billion people on the planet is that controlling land and natural resources is now even more central to control over the masses.

And yet one can’t discuss these things without the average hyper-individualistic American shouting COMMUNIST!

And then you have the younger ones who by good fortune and sometimes by good connections got into a good position fairly soon out of school who look down on the rest of us still looking for that right position as just being “lazy” and “entitled.” Maybe I am entitled a little bit but I challenge those who claim that to ask themselves if they worked any harder than I did for their degrees. The greatest failure of today’s political discourse in America, I believe, is the unwillingness to discuss openly that the future can’t be like the past.

Oh, people will come up with fancy slogans and all.

But a real discussion is lacking. I believe this is so because once one really gets into the details the changes needed require people to give up things - wealth, maybe some “freedoms”, status.

A Kanawha County judge has thrown out a lawsuit filed in 2013 by a woman who claimed her abortion was botched at a clinic on Charleston’s West Side.

Kanawha Circuit Judge Joanna Tabit entered an order Monday dismissing the lawsuit filed by the Family Policy Council of West Virginia on behalf of Itai Gravely. The judge dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice, meaning it can never be refiled.

Gravely, who was 26 at the time her lawsuit was filed, sued the Women’s Health Center and Dr. Rodney Lee Stephens. The Family Policy Council, a conservative evangelical group that opposes abortion, held a press conference across the street from the health center the day the lawsuit was filed. The lawsuit also prompted West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey to begin a review of abortion regulations statewide.

Dr. Byron Calhoun, who treated Gravely at Charleston Area Medical Center after her abortion and served as the expert in her lawsuit, is the national medical advisor for the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, an anti-abortion organization that trains and provides legal counsel to “life-affirming” pregnancy resources centers, according to the group’s website.

later in the article, we come to the out and out lying parts:

In her 12-page order, Tabit concluded that Gravely didn’t tell healthcare providers at the clinic she was addicted to heroin “which may have caused later complications when pain-relieving measures were employed during the procedure.”

The day after her abortion, Gravely called the clinic complaining of severe cramping and heavy bleeding, Tabit wrote. Clinic personnel asked her to come in to be examined, but instead Gravely called an ambulance and went to CAMC, because she didn’t have the money to get herself to the clinic.

While at CAMC, Calhoun performed an ultrasound, where he testified he found a fetal skull of about 13 weeks gestation in her uterus — but Calhoun didn’t tell Gravely of his alleged findings at the time, and a follow-up procedure at CAMC found no fetal remains.

Just finding a minimum wage job these days is no longer a simple matter of walking in and asking for an application. Paper applications are an endangered species, mostly only seen in start-ups or small businesses without a major net presence. If you want to work for a major chain, you better be prepared to sit for 20-30 minutes online filing out an application and dealing with a long questionnaire. The last part in particular is a way a lot of kids are getting screwed over, because they don’t tell them up front that that questionnaire is pretty much a pre-interview.

In 1969, I was making $100/wk ($5/hr) and raising 2 kids on it, and we didn’t really want for a lot, except maybe trying to buy a house. And because I paid for everything in cash and had no credit, I couldn’t get one. I didn’t try again until 1978 when I bought my first house.

$100.00 in 1969 had the same buying power as $661.44 in 2015.

I was actually making $700+/wk in 1995 because I asked for a huge raise of 20% a couple of years before. And had already bought my second house after selling the first one for twice what I paid for it.

Before that, though, I worked at jobs that paid far less, esp in the 80s and was treading water. Luckily, the house pmt for that first house was only $220/mo, PITI. I’m practical and was lucky it was so low, since I was out of work a couple of times in the 80s.

“The incidents at Ferguson , Missouri and North Charleston , as terrible as they are, I feel like we can learn from them,” Parrish said. “Social pressures have forced law enforcement to redefine community policing. The public wants results, not talking on community policing.”
“It’s a systematic approach to multiple communities to make a more approachable police department,” Parrish said. “It’s continuing to build trust between the police and the community.”

One can hope.

You forgot to rant about some unhinged Clinton conspiracy. I’m disappointed.

re: #379 SteveMcGaziBolaGate

I wonder if there is similar data comparing productivity and real wage growth for minimum wage workers. I bet that would show an even greater divergence, and would probably include a significant downward trend on real wages.

Well, I found this:

Between 1979 and 2013, productivity grew 64.9 percent, while hourly compensation of production and nonsupervisory workers, who comprise over 80 percent of the private-sector workforce, grew just 8.0 percent. Productivity thus grew eight times faster than typical worker compensation.

And this:

Labor market policies and business practices have large, though often underappreciated, potential impacts on wages. While this set of policies and practices includes many discrete parts, the common thread of the past generation is that practices, institutions, and standards that have boosted bargaining power for low- and moderate-wage workers have been targeted for weakening—and have been replaced by policies that put more power in the hands of corporations and their CEOs.

Policies that rebuild institutions to provide bargaining power to these workers should hence be a top priority for those looking for better wage outcomes. These policies include raising the minimum wage, strengthening unions, reducing wage theft, updating overtime protections, and correcting worker misclassification.

I realize you hold all the power cards here, but here are some facts which point toward the possibility that conservatives do care about education.

(1) Democrats control California, Republicans control Texas. On the whole.
(2) NAEP scores do not place California head and shoulders above Texas. It’s rather a tie, but if one has to break the tie, then the advantage goes to Texas.

Here’s the numbers for 8th grade reading as of 2013:

W: TX 279, CA 275
B: TX 253, CA 247
H: TX 255, CA 252
A: TX 285, CA 280
L: TX 254, CA 251
N: TX 276, CA 276

Here W=white, B=black, H=Hispanic, A=Asian, L=Low priced lunch eligible, N=Low priced lunch not eligible.

Somehow or other, the richer state, with the Democrats in charge and calling every last shot, have managed only to stay close. The Republicans, in the poorer state, and making all the wrong decisions and not even caring, have managed to equal or exceed Democrat results.

Minimum Wage was $4 in the ‘90’s.

407 SteveMcGaziBolaGate  Apr 22, 2015 9:21:23am

From: huffingtonpost.com

“The minimum wage should have reached $21.72 an hour in 2012 if it kept up with increases in worker productivity, according to a March study by the Center for Economic and Policy Research. While advancements in technology have increased the amount of goods and services that can be produced in a set amount of time, wages have remained relatively flat, the study points out.

Even if the minimum wage kept up with inflation since it peaked in real value in the late 1960s, low-wage workers should be earning a minimum of $10.52 an hour, according to the study.

Between the end of World War II and the late 1960s, productivity and wages grew steadily. Since the minimum wage peaked in 1968, increases in productivity have outpaced the minimum wage growth. “

Texas vs California on the latest SAT scores — a dimmer Lone Star

State education officials have attributed the declining SAT scores in Texas to an increase in the number of minority students taking the exam. Minorities generally perform worse than white students on standardized achievement tests like the SAT and ACT, the nation’s two leading college entrance exams.

However, California students outperformed Texans by big margins this year — 15 points in math and 22 points in reading. Demographics of the student populations in the two states are similar: California is 52.7 percent Hispanic and 25.5 percent white, while Texas is 51.3 percent Hispanic and 30 percent white.

Amazing what a standardize test can do.

That’s because the model got broken due to the hippie liberals making it easy for all the hoi polloi to go to college. Since that degraded the value of a college degree and the proper old boy network there had to be alternative control and secret society networks built up to compensate. With corresponding expense and hand-wringing in how to reestablish exclusivity. Requiring an MBA was only a stop-gap measure.

re: #399 lostlakehiker

I realize you hold all the power cards here, but here are some facts which point toward the possibility that conservatives do care about education.

(1) Democrats control California, Republicans control Texas. On the whole.
(2) NAEP scores do not place California head and shoulders above Texas. It’s rather a tie, but if one has to break the tie, then the advantage goes to Texas.

I’m a product of California public schools, pre-Prop 13.

My schools were extremely well-funded, and the quality was the nation’s best. Small classes, honors and AP for high schoolers, gifted and talented programs at the elementary school level. New textbooks every 3 or 4 years, well-stocked library, well-equipped science labs, arts and athletics and field trips. Other than the Catholic schools, there was zero demand for private education. My classmates were the doctors’ kids, lawyers’ kids, engineers’ kids, along with the maids’ kids, the gardeners’ kids and the mechanics’ kids. In my graduating class of 400 students, 8 had perfect SAT scores (I was not one of them). 85% of us went on to college. I went to a highly selective private college, where I was as well-prepared as the Andover and Exeter kids.

My sister was 7 grades behind me; by the time she got to high school (a few years post-13 budget cuts), the classes were double the size they’d been for me. There was no honors or AP, no chemistry lab, no biology lab. The textbooks hadn’t been replaced since passage, the library hadn’t gotten new stock since then, there was no art or theater, no field trips, and athletes/band/drill team had to buy their own uniforms and equipment. Barely half the kids got into college; meanwhile, most of the doctors’ and lawyers’ and engineers’ kids transferred to the newly opened private school.

And oh, yeah, that was when California was a swing state. It was Conservatives who pushed and passed 13, with sob stories about elderly widows and 3rd-generation shopowners losing their property to taxes.

Conservatives care about education for their own children, not for anybody else’s. Especially not for The Help’s kids, who would need taxpayer funding for quality schools.

Details. Details.

466 Backwoods_Sleuth  Apr 22, 2015 10:04:58am

Reuters from June 6, 2014:

(Reuters) - A Romanian court sentenced hacker “Guccifer”, who broke into the emails of former U.S. president George W. Bush’s family, entertainment figures and the head of the Romanian secret service, to four years in jail on Friday.

Marcel Lazar Lehel, a cab driver by trade and known by his aliases “Guccifer” and “Small Fume”, was arrested in January in Bucharest and could spend a total of seven years behind bars as he also carries a previous three-year suspended sentence.

So, Chuck plans to break him out of a Romanian jail? Or is he fluent in Romanian jailbreak bribery methods?

Fort Benning officials said Wednesday afternoon on the base’s official Facebook account and on Twitter that officials have secured the area and that personnel were safety evacuated as a precaution.

This other reason that I think this is Chuck’s big plan is that technically Chelsea isn’t a Secret Service protectee since she’s over 18, and he can theoretically get Bill’s DNA from Lewisnky’s dress and therefore doesn’t have to deal with Secret Service protection for that.

If I’m right he’s skating on the very narrow edge of legality, which would explain his concern and need to run his scheme by several lawyers before going forward with it. He’s also likely to incur some severe Secret Service heat anyway, because getting Chelsea’s DNA is going to involve some incredibly creepy stalkerish behavior that the Agency might involve itself in anyway despite the technical limitations on who they overtly protect.

Fifty-seven DNR staff receive layoff notices amid talk of budget cuts

Fifty-seven employees of the state Department of Natural Resources began receiving formal notices this week that they might face layoff as part of Gov. Scott Walker’s budget for the next two fiscal years.

DNR spokesman Bill Cosh said that of that number, 27 employees are in the Bureau of Science Services, a unit of the DNR where Walker is proposing significant cuts.

The bureau performs significant research duties for the DNR, and the cuts have come under fire from wildlife and environmental groups who say research is the underpinning of many agency activities.

DNR officials have said in recent weeks that it’s premature to say what cuts will actually occur, and how science and research will be handled at the DNR in future years. Cosh has said that science is carried out across the DNR, and not just in the Bureau of Science Services.

In the brief personal message below, I exhort fellow Christians and ministers to take a STAND. The time for languishing on the sidelines of the battle for Liberty is over. There can be no spectators. All Christians and fair-minded citizens must enlist in this war. Either we will fight for our liberty or we will lose it!

I was an adult of 26 working in 1967. A HS diploma would get you an office job back then, no need for a college degree. I know, as I did bookkeeping, secretarial, the entire gamut of clerical work.

I’ll bet it was her daddy’s company and her major wasn’t business related.

The photo she uses doesn’t compute, either. If she was 21-22 in 1967, then she’s closer to 70 than 30.

Did you look at her bio? BELLY DANCER!! Yeah shake it off shake it off.

Yeah it was. Host was trying to make it seem as if she had over reacted with her tweets and was being disrespectful but was unable to.

re: #404 Dr. Matt

How exactly do those cherry-picked numbers suggest they are “facts which point toward the possibility that conservatives do care about education”?

Cherry picked? You pick it, then. Fourth grade math, eighth grade math, fourth grade reading.

The results will be about the same. I picked the first one I came across.

The numbers suggest that either conservatives do care about education, or that instead, nobody anywhere gives a lick. Because if Democrats cared and had effective answers, and Republicans didn’t care and thus didn’t implement effective answers, then the comparison between these demographically similar states would be a hands-down win for California. It is not.

As to the notion that nobody gives a lick, that’s just absurd. It’s incompatible with human nature. For that matter, the claim that conservatives don’t care is incompatible with human nature. it demonizes and dehumanizes conservatives. It is, moreover, factually wrong as evidenced by the proof I just gave. Twice.

How about if I pick SAT scores for 2014?

testprep.about.com

testprep.about.com

Texas

Critical Reading: 476

Mathematics: 495

Writing: 471

California

Critical Reading: 498

Mathematics: 510

Writing: 496

California scores 22 points better in critical reading.

California scores 15 points better in Math.

California scores 25 points better in writing.

Huh, it’s almost like when you standardize the tests, California scores better than Texas three times out of three.

What do you think of that evidence?
