Republican Congressman Confronted by Extreme Anti-Immigrant Protesters, Threatens to Punch Them Out

This is one of those stories in which everybody involved sucks.

California Republican Rep. Stephen Knight was recently confronted by anti-immigrant protesters from the group “We The People Rising” at his office in Simi Valley, and the conversation got so heated that Knight threatened to fight one of the protesters.

“You told me you didn’t vote for amnesty and you did. I looked it up on the Internet. You lied to me,” a protester named Mike told Knight, before patting the congressman on the shoulder and walking away.

Knight, an Army veteran and longtime Los Angeles police officer, went over to the protester and confronted him.

“Mike, Mike,” Knight says. “Hey, if you touch me again, I’ll drop your ass. All right? Don’t, don’t touch me. Don’t, don’t touch me. Don’t touch me.”

“One more time, Mike,” he added.

Note that “We The People Rising” is not just an ordinary group; they have extensive connections to white supremacist organizations, and were involved in the ugly demonstrations in the California town of Murrieta last year, in which protesters screamed hateful insults at buses full of immigrant families. These people are so extreme they consider Rep. Knight, who is a far right conservative in every way, to be a “RINO.”

Here are some of Knight’s right wing bona fides: Steve Knight (Politician).

He supported Proposition 8, which was ruled unconstitutional by SCOTUS on June 26, 2013. Knight opposed bilingual education, and voted against the images of the Confederate flag being removed from state property. Knight has consistently voted against increasing the minimum wage, gun control, and water regulations for the city.

This is where the Republican Party has ended up in 2015; the agenda is increasingly being set by overt white supremacists and xenophobic extremists.

So, how do we stop it? I try to educate people. They still talk to me anyway.

I had to school a guy on disability who lives here because he got a letter (I’ll probably get one, too), that SS recipients with a certain income limit will not have their premium for doctor’s visits paid by the State starting next year. He blamed it on “Obamacare”.

The reason? NC is one of the states that refused to expand Medicaid under Republican leadership and I told him that. So all those people in the State who receive under something like $1300/mo will have to start paying.

Support for Prop. 8 wasn’t unusual. It did, after all, get a majority of the votes cast on the issue. The best evidence that someone is extreme whatever-wing is that he supports something so far out that it has next to no support at the national level. [At the time the vote was taken.]

Bilingual education isn’t a RW-LW issue. It’s a technical issue. Do kids fare better in the long run if they spend a while intensively learning English and then take their other courses in English, or do they fare better if their English education is gradual and in the meantime they take their other courses in the language spoken at home?

The answer might depend on how old they are when they start. It might depend on how gradual gradual is, and on whether the bilingual education ever actually gets around to where they can go mainstream. There will inevitably be instances where what has been called “bilingual” education turns out badly for most of the students in a school system, and who wouldn’t oppose that?

As to the answer to this technical question, my hunch is that immersion is best. That’s how the army works it, after all. And Berlitz.

The minimum wage is another technical issue. It should be clear to one and all that at some point, a minimum wage law can set wages so high that businesses despair of breaking even, give up, and close rather than go broke paying more than they can afford.

In Sweden, people do a lot more of their own work than in the US for just this reason. You may not be much good at putting furniture together, but you don’t have to pay yourself minimum wage and you don’t have to pay taxes on that wage you don’t pay yourself. This has an egalitarian upside but it has the downside that there’s little formal employment to be had in assembling furniture and a lot of people who could get more done working at something they’re actually good at end up slogging through the furniture assembly.

Minimum wage laws are just one way, and probably not even second best among the choices, for raising the living standard of the working poor. The Earned Income Tax Credit, which should be liberalized and phased out slower, would do a better job of it, by me.

And then we come to the Confederate Flag. That’s a horse of a different color. I won’t even bother to try to construct an excuse or an explanation for that one.

I’ve always been a bit torn on at-will employment. On the one hand, freedom to freely discharge employees allows corporations to improve efficiency easily (by way of layoffs, or by simply firing someone they find underperforming without going through the hassle of detailed documentation, performance improvement plans, etc.) On the other hand, it is so ripe for abuse and so incredibly slanted in favor of the employers, and as someone being employed rather than doing the employing, is constantly in the back of my head as I go about my work.

I hope the scene in the above videos is repeated in every GOP congressperson’s office, town hall and public outing now until the end of the elections next year.

The GOP has fueled this behavior since Obama has been in office. They thought it would give them a guarantee voting block they could count. They never thought about how to answer that anger, because they never thought it would lead to anything but votes.

I love traveling by train, even if Amtrak in the US has its own host of problems (particularly with running on time anywhere outside of the Northeast corridor). It’s so much more pleasant.

Did anyone catch President Obama on Hard Ball tonight?

The President is pretty strong in his support of the TPP trade bill and was pretty adamant that people like Senators Elizabeth Warren and Sherrod Brown (One of my Senators) aren’t really reading the bill’s details and listening to the meetings they have had on it all. He more or less said he understood they had a political role to play and they also had to deal with the bad trade bills in the past that make everyone very wary of any new trade packages.

The man can be damn convincing. He was very strong in mentioning that this is the Pacific and it is being overrun by China’s heavy hand and if we do not compete with a fair play, then China will unfairly bump the U.S. out of the market.

Also, lots of talk about how it makes for fairer markets with people like Japan and South Korea.

I guess I need to hear more on the whole thing and it will be interesting to hear what people like Warren have to say to the President’s new criticism of her stance.

Over the distances that I travel, driving is as efficient time-wise and cheaper money-wise than the train. However, it is far more of a pain in the ass, which is why my wife makes me do all the driving.

If it’s less than 5-6 hours, I figure driving is as efficient as flying, since I’m 2 hours from a nearby major airport. I can get Amtrak to Chicago (but not St. Louis) easily. Anything more, I have to fly, simply because Amtrak lines are so convoluted.

I’m thinking about taking a train trip across some scenery this summer, though.

Ooo, the one up in the Canadian Rockies. I was more interested in it before I found out it’s not an overnight train, but we will still probably do that at some point.

We like riding trains. If you also do, this website is a fantastic resource. The Trans-Siberian Route is on the list at some point - we actually want to try to pull off an around-the-world trip without planes (and not by cheating and just booking an around-the-world cruise, although we may cave and do a leg of that for the Pacific transit).

That amendment was immediately tabled by Butt.

“Putting this psychological harm bypass into the bill is really a loophole for the abortion industry,” she said. “It allows someone who is going to profit from abortion to get the waiting period waived.”

A second amendment put forth by Fitzhugh would have allowed women who become pregnant through rape or incest to be exempted from the 48 hour waiting period.

Butt, however, suggested that the victims could be lying about being raped.

“This amendment appears political,” Butt asserted. “Because we understand in most instances, this is not verifiable. Let’s make sure that these women have the information and the understanding to act.”

They constantly whine that President Obama plays too much golf, while they were happy to defend Bush for taking monthlong vacations and clearing brush or mountain biking. Similarly, they had no problems with Bush or Reagan flying around the world or the country doing presidential things. Whenever Obama travels anywhere, they’re furious. They expect him to never go anywhere and never say anything.

I wish I weren’t so motion-sensitive. I just can’t deal with any kind of motion where I can’t stop and get off if it gets to be too much. So I can just barely manage a local commuter train that stops every 5 minutes. Express? Not so much.

I discovered last month that I can feel the motion on an aircraft carrier that is docked in a very quiet bay. (USS Midway-actually way more interesting than I would have thought.) But really, who feels motion on a %$# parked aircraft carrier? Yeah. Me.

Edit: In my case motion results in a feeling of falling and being unable to reduce or change the motion leads to panic attacks, so it is a bit more complex than most people’s motion issues.

I have had occasional times when driving was a problem, but if I’m driving, or even riding with a friend or family member, if I have a problem I can slow down a bit, or ask the driver to slow down. It is an intermittent problem so just a brief reduction of motion is usually enough and then I’ll be OK.

It is a pain. I can take Dramamine and tolerate mass transit as long as the motion varies and there are stops every few minutes, but I don’t enjoy it. If I flew more, I’d be OK with that, but I have very few occasions to do so, so flying is very difficult for me, but way better than boats or trains.

Senate votes to end Wisconsin’s handgun waiting period

Taking action as gun violence captures particular attention across the state and especially in Milwaukee, the state Senate on Tuesday approved a repeal of the state’s two-day waiting period for handgun purchases, sending the bill to the Assembly on a voice vote.

Current state law prohibits consumers from taking a handgun from the store until 48 hours after a background check is started, with that waiting period extended three additional days in certain cases. Under the bill proposed by Sen. Van Wanggaard (R-Racine) and supported by Gov. Scott Walker, handgun purchasers could take possession of them as soon as they clear state background checks that with today’s technology typically take a matter of hours.

“There’s no statistical evidence that it reduces violence whatsoever,” Wanggaard said of the so-called cooling off period.

Two thoughts:
1) it can only have any effect on the first purchase. As has been noted here, many if not most gun owners have more than one firearm already.
, 2) this will be very popular in the rural parts of the state and will possibly be enough to counter Walker’s urban unpopularity much as his signing of the CCL law gave him the extra votes that carried him in the recall election.

I just watched CCJ’s interview with Jeremiah True. Talk about two guys being all butthurt about not be able to get laid whenever and with whomever they want. Delays were caused on a busy stretch of motorway earlier “due to a dog taking control of a tractor”.

The bizarre incident was reported by Traffic Scotland at J13 of the M74 near Abington in South Lanarkshire.

It later emerged that a sheepdog called Don, owned by a local farmer, had leaned on the controls of a tractor, taking it from a field on to the road.

Police and the farmer later recovered Don, who was unhurt, and the tractor, from the central reservation.

Not being an engineer, I can’t say for sure, but wouldn’t a titanium alloy of some sort be a better albeit, more expensive, choice? You get the benefits of light weight and strength over that of aviation grade aluminum.

I’ve seen mountaintop removal coal mining, seen photos of the shit that gets done in huge ore mining digs, read of the toxic chemicals that get dumped in our streams and rivers, and giving the Earth one day of recognition seems like the LEAST we could do for raping (a term I don’t use lightly) our natural resources so consistently.

Very interesting report about how US DOE facilities, including Livermore and Oak Ridge didn’t just model out Iran’s nuclear program, but duplicated aspects of it and came up with ways to transition it from a potential nuclear weapons facility to a research oriented one. They also worked on reconfiguring an Iranian nuclear reactor so that it would not be able to produce plutonium without reconfigurations that would be noticeable.

A while ago, I mentioned the new high speed rail service from a city about 90 minutes from here to Changsha and points south and east. It took 1h40m from Huaihua to Changsha; the bus ride is about 6h and the regular train almost 8. To build this rail line, they had to tunnel through several mountains, which is why the westward extension to Kunming is going to take quite a while to complete. HSR rights of way avoid steep inclines, so the only way to go is through the mountain ranges running through this part of China.

The debate I watched took place in an empty studio with all the candidates standing at podiums in front of a white screen. The moderator would tell them what the topic was and then go down the line for each party’s candidate to articulate their position on that topic. Then they’d get another round to be able to respond to anything that someone else said. Once that was done, they’d move on to the next topic.

Well, yes. It was a lot more policy driven, but there’s a reason for that. Mexican election law actually prevents them from attacking each other directly in ads. They have to either dance around any allegations or just talk about the party that the candidate they’re attacking is from. And since they’re all going to want to use a soundbite from the debate in their official ads, they’re very limited in what they can and can’t say.

FWIW, they also all create fake unofficial ad campaigns that are designed to look like cheap DIY “concerned citizen” videos, but that’s another story. Hah.

I made myself valuable to my first boss, busted my ass for months. What did I get for it? The knowledge that no matter how hard I worked, I wouldn’t be able to receive that few cents more an hour for another 6 months, because corporate policy was reviews happened annually, and then you had to wait for the regional manager to make the rounds to sign off on any proposed raises. So in reality, you could be waiting 18 months between raises. In the mean time, they’d just keep dumping more and more responsibilities on your head so they could have you work virtually any shift.

Sounds like police academies and departments need to do a lot more in terms of teaching and then reinforcing ethics. Along with repeatedly pointing out that falsifying evidence *once* can lead to all your previous police work being questioned and a lot of cases being thrown out or appealed.

(And if you’re not in the field out of a sense of serving justice and the community you should be weeded out of the program then and there.)

It’s pretty common in most groups and communities unfortunately. Seen it more than once in my fraternity experiences, and also got one of the infamous “not a team player” reviews as a result of not tolerating it in one group.

The knowledge that no matter how hard I worked, I wouldn’t be able to receive that few cents more an hour for another 6 months, because corporate policy was reviews happened annually, and then you had to wait for the regional manager to make the rounds to sign off on any proposed raises. So in reality, you could be waiting 18 months between raises. In the mean time, they’d just keep dumping more and more responsibilities on your head so they could have you work virtually any shift.

At my first real job at Arthur Treacher’s, the manager would always add up the day’s hours and multiply it by the minimum wage and expect that it would generally add up to about 10% of the day’s sales, give or take a little. A lot of businesses have different expectations of how much labor should comprise the cost of sales (or % of gross sales, either way its the same concept). This was in the early 80s. Since then productivity has increased tremendously, and I’m sure that 10% figure is far lower by now.
Shouldn’t the wingnuts ask themselves “Wouldn’t increased productivity merit a pay raise?” I guess that would involve something they lack.

A Kanawha County judge has thrown out a lawsuit filed in 2013 by a woman who claimed her abortion was botched at a clinic on Charleston’s West Side.

Kanawha Circuit Judge Joanna Tabit entered an order Monday dismissing the lawsuit filed by the Family Policy Council of West Virginia on behalf of Itai Gravely. The judge dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice, meaning it can never be refiled.

Gravely, who was 26 at the time her lawsuit was filed, sued the Women’s Health Center and Dr. Rodney Lee Stephens. The Family Policy Council, a conservative evangelical group that opposes abortion, held a press conference across the street from the health center the day the lawsuit was filed. The lawsuit also prompted West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey to begin a review of abortion regulations statewide.

Dr. Byron Calhoun, who treated Gravely at Charleston Area Medical Center after her abortion and served as the expert in her lawsuit, is the national medical advisor for the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, an anti-abortion organization that trains and provides legal counsel to “life-affirming” pregnancy resources centers, according to the group’s website.

Just finding a minimum wage job these days is no longer a simple matter of walking in and asking for an application. Paper applications are an endangered species, mostly only seen in start-ups or small businesses without a major net presence. If you want to work for a major chain, you better be prepared to sit for 20-30 minutes online filing out an application and dealing with a long questionnaire. The last part in particular is a way a lot of kids are getting screwed over, because they don’t tell them up front that that questionnaire is pretty much a pre-interview.

In 1969, I was making $100/wk ($5/hr) and raising 2 kids on it, and we didn’t really want for a lot, except maybe trying to buy a house. And because I paid for everything in cash and had no credit, I couldn’t get one. I didn’t try again until 1978 when I bought my first house.

$100.00 in 1969 had the same buying power as $661.44 in 2015.

I was actually making $700+/wk in 1995 because I asked for a huge raise of 20% a couple of years before. And had already bought my second house after selling the first one for twice what I paid for it.

Before that, though, I worked at jobs that paid far less, esp in the 80s and was treading water. Luckily, the house pmt for that first house was only $220/mo, PITI. I’m practical and was lucky it was so low, since I was out of work a couple of times in the 80s.

Bilingual education isn’t a RW-LW issue. It’s a technical issue. Do kids fare better in the long run if they spend a while intensively learning English and then take their other courses in English, or do they fare better if their English education is gradual and in the meantime they take their other courses in the language spoken at home?

The answer might depend on how old they are when they start. It might depend on how gradual gradual is, and on whether the bilingual education ever actually gets around to where they can go mainstream. There will inevitably be instances where what has been called “bilingual” education turns out badly for most of the students in a school system, and who wouldn’t oppose that?

As to the answer to this technical question, my hunch is that immersion is best. That’s how the army works it, after all. And Berlitz.

The minimum wage is another technical issue. It should be clear to one and all that at some point, a minimum wage law can set wages so high that businesses despair of breaking even, give up, and close rather than go broke paying more than they can afford.

In Sweden, people do a lot more of their own work than in the US for just this reason. You may not be much good at putting furniture together, but you don’t have to pay yourself minimum wage and you don’t have to pay taxes on that wage you don’t pay yourself. This has an egalitarian upside but it has the downside that there’s little formal employment to be had in assembling furniture and a lot of people who could get more done working at something they’re actually good at end up slogging through the furniture assembly.

Minimum wage laws are just one way, and probably not even second best among the choices, for raising the living standard of the working poor. The Earned Income Tax Credit, which should be liberalized and phased out slower, would do a better job of it, by me.

And then we come to the Confederate Flag. That’s a horse of a different color. I won’t even bother to try to construct an excuse or an explanation for that one.

She probably definitely did have help and this is the problem with people like her, they probably did work hard but they delude themselves into thinking that they did all on their own. They ignore the student loans, that Mom and Dad helped out, etc. They think all their success is thanks to them alone. Of course, when they do fail, it’s the big bad government’s fault.

I realize you hold all the power cards here, but here are some facts which point toward the possibility that conservatives do care about education.

(1) Democrats control California, Republicans control Texas. On the whole.
(2) NAEP scores do not place California head and shoulders above Texas. It’s rather a tie, but if one has to break the tie, then the advantage goes to Texas.

Here’s the numbers for 8th grade reading as of 2013:

W: TX 279, CA 275
B: TX 253, CA 247
H: TX 255, CA 252
A: TX 285, CA 280
L: TX 254, CA 251
N: TX 276, CA 276

Here W=white, B=black, H=Hispanic, A=Asian, L=Low priced lunch eligible, N=Low priced lunch not eligible.

Somehow or other, the richer state, with the Democrats in charge and calling every last shot, have managed only to stay close. The Republicans, in the poorer state, and making all the wrong decisions and not even caring, have managed to equal or exceed Democrat results.

Yeah, I was raising a family on $5/hr in 1969 and being told I couldn’t get a promotion because “men had families to support”. Even male meter readers and service guys w/no office experience were brought in the office to do better paying jobs than the female office workers at the gas company, and I resented the hell out of that, even after I aced the mgmt tests they purported to use in evaluating people for mgmt. It’s also why I posted an EEOC article on the bulletin board, was called in about it, given a harder time, made fun of, and subsequently told them to shove it. : )

I would like to see our legislators and administrators look at how other Western countries handle education. Because it seems that modern education and career development is a hole.

I was probably the last guy to make the “Midcentury Model” work. After getting out of the draft Army I quickly married and started a family. Our combined 80 hour income was under $100. Working on a unionized assembly line and the GI Bill let us eat and let me get most of a Master’s in 5 years. Total school debt was about $2000. A third kid and the Nixon recession put me out of school and into (very) odd jobs. No one can expect to do that today.

I realize you hold all the power cards here, but here are some facts which point toward the possibility that conservatives do care about education.

(1) Democrats control California, Republicans control Texas. On the whole.
(2) NAEP scores do not place California head and shoulders above Texas. It’s rather a tie, but if one has to break the tie, then the advantage goes to Texas.

I’m a product of California public schools, pre-Prop 13.

My schools were extremely well-funded, and the quality was the nation’s best. Small classes, honors and AP for high schoolers, gifted and talented programs at the elementary school level. New textbooks every 3 or 4 years, well-stocked library, well-equipped science labs, arts and athletics and field trips. Other than the Catholic schools, there was zero demand for private education. My classmates were the doctors’ kids, lawyers’ kids, engineers’ kids, along with the maids’ kids, the gardeners’ kids and the mechanics’ kids. In my graduating class of 400 students, 8 had perfect SAT scores (I was not one of them). 85% of us went on to college. I went to a highly selective private college, where I was as well-prepared as the Andover and Exeter kids.

My sister was 7 grades behind me; by the time she got to high school (a few years post-13 budget cuts), the classes were double the size they’d been for me. There was no honors or AP, no chemistry lab, no biology lab. The textbooks hadn’t been replaced since passage, the library hadn’t gotten new stock since then, there was no art or theater, no field trips, and athletes/band/drill team had to buy their own uniforms and equipment. Barely half the kids got into college; meanwhile, most of the doctors’ and lawyers’ and engineers’ kids transferred to the newly opened private school.

And oh, yeah, that was when California was a swing state. It was Conservatives who pushed and passed 13, with sob stories about elderly widows and 3rd-generation shopowners losing their property to taxes.

Conservatives care about education for their own children, not for anybody else’s. Especially not for The Help’s kids, who would need taxpayer funding for quality schools.

(Reuters) - A Romanian court sentenced hacker “Guccifer”, who broke into the emails of former U.S. president George W. Bush’s family, entertainment figures and the head of the Romanian secret service, to four years in jail on Friday.

Marcel Lazar Lehel, a cab driver by trade and known by his aliases “Guccifer” and “Small Fume”, was arrested in January in Bucharest and could spend a total of seven years behind bars as he also carries a previous three-year suspended sentence.

Situation at Fort Benning, GA.

Authorities at Fort Benning, the U.S. Army post in west Georgia, say they’re dealing with an ongoing “emergency situation” at the post’s Warrior Transition Battalion.

Fort Benning officials said Wednesday afternoon on the base’s official Facebook account and on Twitter that officials have secured the area and that personnel were safety evacuated as a precaution.

Base officials said in the social media posts that children in a child development center were safe but were being moved to another site due the emergency.

The base provided no other details, and Fort Benning officials could not immediately be reached or did not give further information Wednesday afternoon.

Fifty-seven DNR staff receive layoff notices amid talk of budget cuts

Fifty-seven employees of the state Department of Natural Resources began receiving formal notices this week that they might face layoff as part of Gov. Scott Walker’s budget for the next two fiscal years.

DNR spokesman Bill Cosh said that of that number, 27 employees are in the Bureau of Science Services, a unit of the DNR where Walker is proposing significant cuts.

The bureau performs significant research duties for the DNR, and the cuts have come under fire from wildlife and environmental groups who say research is the underpinning of many agency activities.

DNR officials have said in recent weeks that it’s premature to say what cuts will actually occur, and how science and research will be handled at the DNR in future years. Cosh has said that science is carried out across the DNR, and not just in the Bureau of Science Services.

I was an adult of 26 working in 1967. A HS diploma would get you an office job back then, no need for a college degree. I know, as I did bookkeeping, secretarial, the entire gamut of clerical work.

I’ll bet it was her daddy’s company and her major wasn’t business related.

The photo she uses doesn’t compute, either. If she was 21-22 in 1967, then she’s closer to 70 than 30.

Because if Democrats cared and had effective answers, and Republicans didn’t care and thus didn’t implement effective answers, then the comparison between these demographically similar states would be a hands-down win for California. It is not.

As to the notion that nobody gives a lick, that’s just absurd. It’s incompatible with human nature. For that matter, the claim that conservatives don’t care is incompatible with human nature. it demonizes and dehumanizes conservatives. It is, moreover, factually wrong as evidenced by the proof I just gave. Twice.
