Paranoid Right Wing “Journalist” Sharyl Attkisson to Host “Investigative Journalism” Show for Sinclair

The inmates are taking over the asylum
Media • Views: 26,473

The woman who invented a brain-dead paranoid fantasy about the NSA deleting her articles as she typed them gets rewarded by the Sinclair network with a show on “investigative journalism.” Focusing on “accountability,” which she herself has somehow completely avoided.

Our media just gets more pathetic every day.

The show, Sinclair announced, will mix both investigative and political journalism. It will also focus on “accountability.” In 2013, Attkisson alleged that both her personal and professional computers had been hacked by the U.S. government for more than two years during her time reporting on the Benghazi attack.

Note that Attkisson deleted her video from YouTube that purported to show the “hacking” as it happened.

What I Wish I Could Tell Them About Teaching in a Title I School

I’m in my fifth year of teaching English at a Title I middle school. Title I schools are public schools that receive special grants because of their high number of students who have been identified as at-risk. I adore my students and my teaching team. I love teaching. I’m really good at it. I respect my administration and feel valued by them.

But at the end of this year, I’m leaving. I’m not sure if I’ll continue teaching elsewhere or start a new career. If I do leave, I’ll be one of the 40-50% of teachers who leave during their first five years. A drop in the bucket.

To other teachers, I’m sure this isn’t surprising. Without knowing me or where I teach, they can probably easily guess why someone who loves her job and is good at it would be leaving.

But it’s not teachers who need to know what it’s like. It’s everyone else. People who have no idea what it’s like teaching in a Title I school. Some of these people are even making important decisions about education.

Our media just gets more pathetic every day.

I blame the internet.

Really.

There is very little of the traditional (news, general) print media left. Paying advertisers are now going elsewhere. It’s just a bad business.

If you read 19th century newspapers they can be a real treat, but they inherited lots of bad practices from their ancestors, the sheets produced in the 18th century.

I’m not sure if we can identify when the news media peaked in credibility, if the idea even works, but it probably stretches from Edward Murrow to Walter Cronkite.

I posted on a Gawker thread somewhere that I understood (somewhat) Ben Affleck’s embarrassment. I have relatives who fought for the confederacy. I’m not proud of that. That said, I’m not a huge star, and I don’t know his motivation. I’m glad he seems to be dealing with it.

That said, it’s not the crime, it’s the coverup that gets you. I hope he can move past this. He seems like an alright dude.

I would tell them about how policies that have been designed to not leave children behind are also teaching them that hard work doesn’t matter.

It’s here that some will chime in CHARTER SCHOOLS!!

Fundamentally, I believe that a parent cannot be replaced by a teacher. From whatever nuclear family a student springs has such profound effects on that student that the best teachers will be stymied.

I guess I’m glad that the dedicated teachers accomplish the amount they do. Our society is better for it, but there is only so much a teacher can do.

I’ve never taught Title I classes, or even any at-risk students, but I’ve experienced many of those same triumphs and frustrations that writer has. Education of young people is much, much more than test scores and pushing “product” out the door. It’s an intense person-to-person interaction, with one teacher interacting with 30 students or more in each class, five classes a day, five days a week. And if you do it the way it should be done, it’s fucking exhausting work. You come home drained each day, with a stack of homework to grade and the next day’s lessons to plan, and maybe a set of phone calls to make.

America’s corporate education reformers have no fucking clue what they’re talking about. And Michelle Rhee should be ashamed, as a former classroom teacher herself, to be part of that “reform” movement — not to mention that whole Washington, DC, testing scandal under her watch.

Yeah. That’s gonna work. Righhhhht…

The history of education in America has these big cycles: school as factory, school as individualized learning place, school as factory, etc. Whenever one phase become too extreme, the pendulum swings to the other phase. It’s been like this in the public schools since the late 19th century. Dewey’s teaching philosophy (now currently in disfavor by the “reformers”) was every child deserved a broad academic and moral education and needed some kind of schooling tailored to their skill set. It replaced the factory model of churning out literate, blue collar workers.

In the 1950s, Sputnik scared the crap out of Washington, and there was a big push in what we now call STEM education, to produce a generation of scientists and technologists. The 1960s and ’70s were more touchy-feely and Dewey-like. Now we’re back to the factory model, with students being measured like widgets by examinations that are tied to funding and school rankings. Moreover, we’ve got this new “free market” notion that government should let any Tom, Dick or Harry open a school and offer parents vouchers to send their kids to Tom’s Charter School. It’s so much easier for politicians to pass the buck this way, than to struggle with how to improve public education. Let Tom worry about the details and the angry parents.

Time for lunch. I need a break, because this topic is near and dear to my heart and I get really pissed off about these so-called education reforms.
