I know I’m getting old since I don’t recognize any of those “correspondents” or whoever they are at the tables.

Russian hackers read Obama’s unclassified emails last year: NYT

reuters.com

(Reuters) - Russian hackers who penetrated sensitive parts of the White House computer system last year read President Barack Obama’s unclassified emails, the New York Times reported on Saturday, quoting U.S. officials.

“There is no evidence that the president’s email account itself was hacked, White House officials said. Still, the fact that some of Mr. Obama’s communications were among those retrieved by hackers has been one of the most closely held findings of the inquiry,” the paper said.

“A White House spokeswoman declined to comment on the report but the White House earlier this month confirmed the breach, saying it took place last year and that it did not affect classified information.

“The New York Times said on Saturday the breach had been “far more intrusive and worrisome than has been publicly acknowledged.” More

According to the NYT, Walker said something about banning immigrants. The Koch brothers want cheap labor, so they’re not amused.

He basically said the other day that, in addition to stamping out illegal immigration, he thinks we should consider slowing or stopping legal immigration for awhile, because there’s too many natives without jobs. Something that plays well with the cheap seats, but is toxic to the Koch crowd who rely heavily on H-1B visas to cover their educated labor needs cheaply.

That’s the thing about a wide-open field that is ignored by those who are demanding a “strong” Dem bench, that that’s “strong” GOP bench is presently self-destructing before it even reaches the primaries. Walker’s imploding, Bush is stalling out, Aqua Buddha’s mystique is wearing off, and Cruz is an absolute joke. Such is life. Maybe I’ll go see a movie tomorrow. Humm… Ex Machina, which is scoring a 90% at Rotten Tomatoes, and looks like a good thought provoking film, or Paul Blair: Mall Cop 2, which is coming in at 4%. (I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything score that low). Decisions, decisions.

The only one who seems to be riding out the storm is Rubio, and that’s because nobody sees him as a serious threat.

The problem is that there are always more elections. Not getting potential nominees for 2016, 2020, and beyond in front of voters now is a missed opportunity.

We were comparing Arrow and Daredevil (the TV series, that is) the other day, and the verdict was DD is a much better drama. I noted that Arrow runs on network TV, which means the scriptwriters can’t be as explicit as they can on a paid-for “network” like Netflix. So, Arrow tends to be bland by comparison.

Watching Arrow just now, I realized another difference. DD writers have 14 more minutes per episode to develop a story. Once you remove the commercials, a typical Arrow ep is only 43 minutes long. Plus, the commercial breaks force each scene to be comparatively short.

Makes me wonder what Arrow would be like if each episode was closer to an hour long.

A month ago, I’d think I was crazy for saying this, but I’m gonna say it now…I think Rubio might end up being the GOP nominee. Because it seems that all those things I used to write him off before now, from being hopelessly naive to having virtually no record to run on, makes him golden to the establishment.

Plus Rubio’s already got his own birther nutbars, so he’s set. Heh.

I still say the big money donors are going to go with Jeb or Christie. They’ll pick the one that’s less damaged and run with him. I would’ve said that Walker had a chance, but once he decided to lose his goddamn mind and babble about cutting LEGAL immigration, I changed my mind.

The big money types who give millions of dollars want EASIER legal immigration because that helps them attract and retain the best talent. They also want things like same-sex marriage and non-discrimination laws protecting LGBT people for the same reason. Walker signed his death warrant when he went off-script to try and outcrazy Ted Cruz.

re: #136 Lidane

The money will go with the guy who will win the primary. Immigration won’t mean a thing because the Republicans will just live with the status quo and use that to attack the Democrats; business will keep its labor stream. Ultimately, Jeb will be the nominee, just like it was obvious that Mitt was going to be the nominee last time. Christie doesn’t just have a problem with bridgegate, he will have a problem defending his tenure as US Attorney in NJ. He always manged to catch low and mid level bad guys, but never the big fish. He was really average. It was a blurb briefly a couple of years ago, but you can bet it will come back big if he runs.

Not to mention this;

Russia’s Interior Ministry has denounced Kremlin-backed Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov’s comment encouraging law-enforcement officers to “shoot to kill” security forces from other parts of Russia that conduct operations in Chechnya without its consent.

The ministry said in an April 23 statement that it considers the comment “unacceptable for the leader of the Chechen Republic.”

Kadyrov made the remark at an April 21 meeting with law-enforcement officers in Chechnya’s capital, Grozny.

Heh, I love how Carrier turns the theistic argument against itself:

freethoughtblogs.com

P1: In the beginning, there was absolutely nothing.
-
P2: If there was absolutely nothing, then (apart from logical necessity) nothing existed to prevent anything from happening or to make any one thing happening more likely than any other thing.
-
C1: Therefore, in the beginning, nothing existed to prevent anything from happening or to make any one thing happening more likely than any other thing.
-
P3: Of all the logically possible things that can happen when nothing exists to prevent them from happening, continuing to be nothing is one thing, one universe popping into existence is another thing, two universes popping into existence is yet another thing, and so on all the way to infinitely many universes popping into existence, and likewise for every cardinality of infinity, and every configuration of universes.
-
C2: Therefore [given logical necessity], continuing to be nothing was no more likely than one universe popping into existence, which was no more likely than two universes popping into existence, which was no more likely than infinitely many universes popping into existence, which was no more likely than any other particular number or cardinality of universes popping into existence.
-
P4: If each outcome (0 universes, 1 universe, 2 universes, etc. all the way to aleph-0 universes, aleph-1 universes, etc. [note that there is more than one infinity in this sequence]) is no more likely than the next, then the probability of any finite number of universes (including zero universes) or less having popped into existence is infinitely close to zero, and the probability of some infinite number of universes having popped into existence is infinitely close to one hundred percent.
-
C3: Therefore, the probability of some infinite number of universes having popped into existence is infinitely close to one hundred percent.
-
P5: If there are infinitely many universes, and our universe has a nonzero probability of existing (as by existing it proves it does, via cogito ergo sum), then the probability that our universe would exist is infinitely close to one hundred percent (because any nonzero probability approaches one hundred percent as the number of selections approaches infinity, via the infinite monkey theorem, similar to the law of large numbers).
-
C4: Therefore, if in the beginning there was absolutely nothing, then the probability that our universe would exist is infinitely close to one hundred percent.

Breitbart has a lurid account this morning of “violent riots” that have “shut down” the city of Baltimore. To anyone who was paying attention, it is obvious that it was the high handed antics of the Baltimore police, not the protests themselves, that shut down the city.

It is important to realize that in today’s cultishly authoritarian police culture, the resulting outrage is not a bug but a feature. From travelers stranded on the closed interstate to the imprisoned crowd at the ballpark, thousands of complete innocents got the message loud and clear that the cops can do anything they like and there is fuck all the little people can do about it.

I think we might be headed for a catastrophic breakdown of law and order in this country. People are fed up with being robbed and abused at every turn by the very people they have empowered to prevent robbery and abuse. Police excess and arrogance, from gleefully shooting dogs and beating old ladies to “asset forfeiture,” is designed for one thing, to intimidate the law abiding, to emphasize the power and supremacy of law enforcement to the “sheep.”
The problem with this is the apparent assumption by many police that their power and authority is theirs and theirs alone. This is why they remain so amazingly oblivious to the rising tide of anger and resentment from all points of the political spectrum. They lost the left decades ago, and they are in the process of losing the right.

Their power is not theirs alone, though. Their power and authority is still, both legally and practically, based solely on the consent of the public. Think about it: The average urban police department is outnumbered hundreds to one by the people they increasingly seek to dominate and whose consent is essential to their power. Some spark, an urban equivalent of Bundy Ranch for example, could lead to a conflagration that could spread across the country in a matter of hours when people realize just who has the real power and who does not.

A floor fight at the GOP convention? Wingnut on plutocrat action?!

Hoo boy. That would be some prime entertainment.

re: #195 Dr Lizardo

The wingnuts seem to be lining up behind Cruz; I think if he doesn’t get the nomination - or at least the VP slot - then you’ll see a teabagger revolt, possibly at the GOP convention.

Who knows? The convention itself could be the scene of the showdown between the wingnut base and the plutocrats who run the GOP. That could be interesting. I suspect there’s not enough popcorn in the world for that spectacle.

If Ted Cruz gets marginalized at the polls and SCOTUS rules against the RWNJs on gay marriage, I expect a VERY contentious GOP convention next year. A floor fight is unlikely since both parties have changed their rules in recent years to prevent that from happening, but a massive infight at the RNC would be catastrophic.

Still, if Cruz gets ignored and SCOTUS strikes down SSM bans, there will be a lot of buthurt and demands from the RWNJs. The minimum that will satisfy them would be Cruz as VP. They’re going to be just like Tony Perkins and demanding SCOTUS impeachments for every justice that rules in favor of SSM.

Yeah, I can see that happening. The butthurt from the wingnut base would be off the charts under such a scenario.

Here’s a good example of your typical wingnut on the subject of SSM, courtesy of the fever swamp.

Tyrant is a judge that redefines and thus rewrite a law and practice upheld for centuries. Im afraid should they act again as tyrants we will need much more than marching to restore law and order to our land we will need impeachment and beheading. For there can be no law while employees in black robes can simply rewite it after 2 hundred years of settled practice.

This is a matter of rule of law written by the people & their states vs uneledcted federal employees in black robes.

You can’t after all have a nation of law that changes at the whim of tyrants rather than the due process of a legislator.

Morning LGF gang!

I’ve been saying for some time there might be a connection to the TeaParty and the old hippie protesters. A tenuous connection as many are not real hippie protesters, but they still come from the generation of protester and maybe they see themselves as those old Vietnam era “take it to the streets” types.

If they get pissed off enough and they do have a convention showdown in Cleveland next summer, will it get as nasty as the 1968 Democratic National Convention? I doubt it, but one never knows these days.

UpChuck has all three of main weapons deployed in that series, plus one support weapon:

1. Doxing (or the threat to dox)

2. Gender-based attacks such as Slut shaming or calling the woman he’s targeted a ‘bitch’.

3. Calling the person he’s going after a liar (without offering proof, of course).

4 (Support). Describing his victim’s foe in laudatory terms.

So the pattern we see from Chucky is:

There was this odd cultural practice, practiced well into the second half of the 20th century in isolated rural parts of America, known as “courtship”. It involved allowing the male to demonstrate that he was a gentleman capable of respecting his partner’s wishes in a number of settings before engaging in any potentially compromising acts with him.

It has come to be supplanted by “the hookup”, in which the young man is only expected to be nice long enough to convince the woman to compromise, or barring that, use force, threats or coercion.

And then, if she complains about it, to call her a “slut” for having had anything to do with him at all in the first place.

All that crap is going to have to work itself out if the younger generations on down from here hopes to have some decent social interaction and ordered lives. What the College Accused Me Of — Or, Why I Haven’t Been Blogging
By Charles Johnson at 8:13 AM
Now that I have graduated it is time to explain to my readers why it is that I have been incommunicado these past days.

My cheating, lying ex-girlfriend, XXXXXXXXXXX, was apparently very upset with my blog post describing her as a cheating, lying ex-girlfriend who was making stuff about me and sending it to my admirers on Twitter.

XXXX then made up a frivolous complaint against me saying that I had “harassed” and “defamed” her and brought in the Dean of Students. There was only one problem: I had, in her own writing, emails and chats that showed she had cheated and lied.

He then goes on to detail what the college did and what he did in response to the harassment charges.

In journalism, you reputation for truthful, balanced and responsible reporting was key to your professional success. In social interaction, being regarded as a gentleman was key to your personal success.

Nowadays it is about getting what you want without getting thrown in jail for it, and if you are, blaming it on everyone but yourself.

There’s no good answer. Paying ransom helps keep the hostages safer. In the 80s President Reagan would sell weapons to Iran, they would release one hostage and grab another, then we would sell more weapons. Paying ransoms was also a big factor in the minimal loss of life to the Somali pirates.

Well, I don’t like to lump all charities into a generalization, but those who run the boards are most likely responsible for the tenor of charities.

Wherever you have greed, you’ll find corruption everywhere.

Don’t get me wrong; if the Clinton Foundation has made missteps, this is certainly a good time to rectify them. After all, charity, or philanthropy—if you want to call it that—has always been designed for the benefit of those who control the economy, to make themselves look generous.

However, considering the alternative, I will gladly support Clinton as the first female President. That would be a first step in trying to smash a patriarchal society that preys on women and seeks to corrupt all of us to some degree.

Yes, but the hostages were only part of the reason the weapons were being sold. Another was that some of the profits were funneled to the Contras fighting the Sandanista regime in Nicaragua. This support made the arms sales a ‘two-fer” against Moscow: Iran used I-TOW ATGMs to blow up Iraqi-manned T-72s, while the Sandanistas used supplied arms to fight a regime that the USSR also supplied with weapons.

A third, and much smaller reason, was to field-test systems like the I-TOW. Part of the sales agreement with Iran covered the Iranian Army passing user reports back to the CIA, which passed the critical data from said reports to the relevant armed services. I-TOW data obtained from Iran was used to help design TOW-2A so as to be able to overcome projected armor improvements in Soviet tanks.

Being in treatment does not protect you from being arrested. It’s up to the DA and the police if you get to finish treatment before they arrest you, and then only if it’s an inpatient program. If there’s parts of the day where you’re free to leave, the cops will likely arrest you, treatment facility or no, in order to make sure you don’t commit further crimes or try to run.

If there’s parts of the day where you’re free to leave, the cops will likely arrest you, treatment facility or no, in order to make sure you don’t commit further crimes or try to run.

Except they usually don’t kill people. It’s wrong. So an arrest for robbery (property, again) is more important than that of a life being taken by the cops.

I see.

The actions of both the USA and USSR regarding the Iran-Iraq War must be seen in the context of the larger and contemporaneous Cold War.

One thing it got us was a decade of super-cheap oil prices, what with both Iraq and Iran pumping and selling as much as they could to finance their war efforts, thus buying us another decade to ignore alternative energy sources…

Awww Dark. Where is that benefit of the doubt you give for some of the GOP people we see you express from time to time? You know, the stuff about politics having certain needs that you have to cover to get elected and then go on to do good things.

This is just more politics and it is the GOP digging dirt that they can sell to you. Dirt you seem to have bought and stored away just like intended.

Later all. Got some stuff to do before running out to some friends for a burger cookout. Sure it is a little brisk, but the sun is out, not a cloud to yell at in the sky and burgers cooked up outside don’t know the temp.

When it comes to President Reagan, I never cared that he was an actor. He was a better than average President who built an administration of people who were generally pragmatic. By the end of the George H Bush administration those pragmatic people were pretty much pushed aside by the ideologues. Reagan had his flaws, even the one DF is trying to deflect by saying that the DOD needed to field test those missiles (how’s that for a reach!!). He did compromise an awful lot and that it largely forgotten.

Iraq had been in the USSR’s orbit for a long time prior to 1979. Don’t forget that the IDF was destroying Iraqi manned T-55s sent to aid Syria in the Yom Kipur War of 1973. Iraq actually took delivery of its first two shipments of T-72s prior to its invading Iran.

As for the cost issue, Iraq paid for its Soviet tanks but the financing arrangement for the sales meant that Iraq’s debt kept increasing. And it wasn’t interest, it was additional purchases before earlier purchase sets’ costs had been recouped by the manufacturer.

When people like Harris and Cenk start presenting themselves as “authorities” on any issue, that’s when I start tuning out. They’re simply opinions, and we all have them.

That said, people have a right, everywhere, to live their lives as they see fit as long as they do no harm, of any kind. That goes for any ideology—political or religious/non-religious.

Right now, you could probably find a shit ton of excuses people use to inflict pain and suffering, even death, on billions of others due to those kinds of factors.

Interesting (to me at least) comparison of how the new lens if going to be used. Took a shot of a robin with the standard lens, and then a roughly similar shot with the telephoto. Standard 1 is simply the base image shrunk to 11% size. Standard 2 is a clipped image centering on the robin. Telephoto 1 is an 11% sized image and Telephoto 2 is a clipped image. Nothing done with a editor to clean up anything.

Standard 1 - robin in shrunk image
Standard 2 - clipped image centering on robin
Telephoto 1 - shrunk image
Telephoto 2 - clipped image centering on robin

341 Rev_Arthur_Icantbreatheing  Apr 26, 2015 9:19:58am

“Investigative journalism; explanatory journalism; journalism that exposes corruption and injustice and gives a voice to the different, the marginalized, the voiceless—that’s power. It’s a privilege. It’s as important to America’s trajectory—to our values, our ideals—than anything that we could do in elected office.

We remember journalists we lost over the past year—journalists like Steven Sotloff and James Foley, murdered for nothing more than trying to shine a light into some of the world’s darkest corners. (Applause.) We remember the journalists unjustly imprisoned around the world, including our own Jason Rezaian. (Applause.) For nine months, Jason has been imprisoned in Tehran for nothing more than writing about the hopes and the fears of the Iranian people, carrying their stories to the readers of the Washington Post in an effort to bridge our common humanity. As was already mentioned, Jason’s brother, Ali, is here tonight and I have told him personally we will not rest until we bring him home to his family, safe and sound. (Applause.)

Obama Honors Slain and Imprisoned Journalists
These journalists and so many others view their work as more than just a profession, but as a public good; an indispensable pillar of our society. So I want to give a toast to them. I raise a glass to them and all of you, with the words of the American foreign correspondent Dorothy Thompson: “It is not the fact of liberty, but the way in which liberty is exercised, that ultimately determines whether liberty itself survives.”

I’m literal by nature. But I’ve got no beef with you on this point, just some disagreement. Carry on.

I understand. It’s just that in no way was I talking about what the Kochs were motivated by. What do you disagree with me about? Come on, you don’t actually believe Walker’s bs do you? I mean he may well be a spiritual guy but this reeks of cynical bs to me in that he’s acting like it was his spirituality that got him through the recall and ignoring that he had some very wealthy friends (hi Chuck and Dave) that got him through that. If I were a religious person, I’d be disgusted by that. As I said, it seems to me that it’s almost like conservative evangelicals like being taken for suckers by people like Walker.

I’m always cynical when someone who has made their political bones on fucking the less well off in favor of the more well off talks about how big a role his faith plays in his life. When has Walker ever favored a policy as governor and now presidential candidate that would benefit the less well off at the expense of the very well off? I’ve never seen that. I’ve seen lots of the reverse though since his first election to Wisconsin’s governor’s mansion in 2010.

re: #375 bratwurst

Amazingly, some pro-Israel Republican Senators are not pro-Israel enough for Aipac now.

That’s not actually what AIPAC is saying:

At issue is the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act, a bipartisan bill authored by the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Bob Corker. Earlier this month, the bill was voted out of Corker’s committee unanimously, with strong support from Democrats and a promise from President Barack Obama not to veto the bill if it reached his desk without amendments that he said could imperil the Iran nuclear negotiations.

Senate staff members tell us that since Monday, senior Aipac lobbyists and board members have had face-to-face meetings and phone calls with leading senators to try to dissuade lawmakers from voting for the Republican amendments.

But that is an awkward place to be for the largest pro-Israel lobby in Washington. Senator Marco Rubio, for example, filed an amendment Thursday evening requiring Obama to certify that Iran has publicly recognized Israel’s right to exist as a condition of getting Congressional approval of the Iran deal. Earlier this month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proposed a similar idea, but Obama said such a demand would wreck the negotiations. Aipac is now taking Obama’s side on whether a final nuclear accord with Iran should compel its regime to recognize Israel’s right to exist.

Aipac supports Corker’s bill as is. Earlier this year, it quietly dropped its campaign to get Congress to pass new sanctions on Iran latched onto a previous version of the chairman’s legislation. Corker’s new bill, which has added concessions to Obama, would give Congress a chance to review an Iran deal and could provide for a vote on the deal, although language inserted at the last minute makes clear that Obama could begin implementing the agreement even if Congress votes against it.

So AIPAC is trying to prevent to attachment of ‘killer’ amendments. That good, but I do feel the bill needs an amendment such that Congress can keep sanctions in place if they vote the deal down.

The ‘hen’ part isn’t sexist. The photo was of a male mallard duck (called a drake), and in duck species it is solely the female (who is called a hen) who builds the nest and takes care of the young (ducklings). Saying that a drake was feathering its nest would be factually incorrect because drakes don’t do that.

Male Canadian geese (ganders), by contrast, play an active role in nest building and keeping an eye on their offspring after they hatch.

Saying that a drake was feathering its nest would be factually incorrect because drakes don’t do that.

Male Canadian geese (ganders), by contrast, play an active role in nest building and keeping an eye on their offspring after they hatch.

It was and is completely sexist.
And if it was supposed to be the “funny” part, you failed.
As a matter of fact, the entire comment was a fail for you since you decided to use a great photo of a duck to make a completely irrelevant (and nasty) political comment.

Santorum even admittted that they’re not looking for the smart people. There’s a reason why social liberalism especially rises with more education and why social conservatives like Ricky have such contempt for secular post secondary education even though they received it themselves. Keep em ignorant and voting Republican. Budget cuts to education ahoy!

The weirdest part is that when I was growing up (30 years ago), teachers were respected. My parents were No Questions Asked about them.

30 years ago teachers were as well respected as cops and soldiers. Then the unis started churning out educated kids AKA ‘liberals.’ We need to return to greatness by taking our country back and using colleges as job training centers, not this cockamamie education stuff.

I did not write those terms.

What we need is someone in leadership to speak, well, eloquently, about the pandering to religious gatherings for the sake of buying votes, the currency of the buy being paranoia and ignorance.

Anyone attempting to broach the subject will find those terms twisted and thrown back in their faces. that prevents a lot of politicians from even trying.

The “recognizing Israel’s right to exist” ploy is a poison pill to prevent the arms agreement with Iran from moving forward. Republicans know it isn’t likely so it’s a convenient excuse to kill the treaty.

Folks who understand that nothing else has slowed Iran’s plans would like to see the agreement move forward. The alternatives are scary.

Some good news, at least:

Mustafa Akinci, a veteran politician with a strong track record of reaching out to rival Greek Cypriots, has been elected as leader of the breakaway Turkish Cypriots in ethnically divided Cyprus.

Akinci handily defeated hard-line encumbent Dervis Eroglu with 60.38 percent of the vote, preliminary official results showed. Turnout for Sunday’s vote was just over 64 percent.

Akinci is seen as a moderate who can propel forward stalled reunification talks that are expected to resume next month. Akinci rode a wave of discontent with five years of rule by Eroglu who failed to rally right-wing supporters.

Hopefully, the Cypriots - both Turks and Greeks - will be able to move forward. It won’t be easy, to be sure, but the future’s what you gotta look forward to…..not keep looking back at the past.

Empathy is what truly separates liberalism and conservatism once you get past policy differences. I am a liberal in large part because I empathize with those who aren’t me. In my observations of prominent conservatives, it’s teh total opposite- they won’t empathize with people who aren’t them. Never an attempt to sympathize with teh gay kid told he’s going to hell, the unwed mother to be, the black kid harassed by cops.

Well, it has turned into a disaster.

I don’t think that it’s a disaster. The post at your link does point out some of the pitfalls of the current setup. Unless you’re a very careful modder, it’s possible to inadvertently incorporate someone’s work in your mod. Skyrim has been around for a while and so a modder may have long ago replaced a file for, say, a hat, with a better looking one, created by someone else, and then forgotten about it. The structure of the modding tool makes it easiest to replace that original hat with a modded one by using the same file names as the original.
It’s early days. I’d like to see how this plays out.

re: #482 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

A great performance, but as an unregenerate Yorkist, I don’t believe a word of that Tudor agitprop that Shakespeare preserved for posterity. I think Richard III was the victim of the most successful campaign of character assassination in history—and really, the beginning of that craft, pursued so relentlessly today.

As for George R. R. Martin, I haven’t read anything of his since Dying of the Light, so I have no opinion on GoT.

Agitprop so successful that it succeeded in erasing the rule of Richard IV from history.
