Right Wing Bloggers and Rush Limbaugh Fall For Las Vegas Man’s Hoax About Harry Reid’s Injuries

Awesome
Wingnuts • Views: 29,363

A Las Vegas man claims he started a false rumor that the injuries suffered by Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid several months ago were the result of an attack by Reid’s brother, not an exercise accident.

Larry Pfeifer, a 50-year-old former consultant in the nightclub and entertainment industry, said he fabricated the story after becoming appalled that right-wing political blogger John Hinderaker published a rumor that Reid’s injuries stemmed from an assault by a Mafia enforcer. Pfeifer said he pitched his fake story about the Reid brothers’ supposed fight to Hinderaker, author of the Power Line blog, to test whether the blogger would publish it, as well. When Hinderaker reported it and the rumor was subsequently spread by others in conservative media, Pfeifer says he began plotting to self-report it as a lie to show the lack of credibility and journalistic standards among partisan media figures.

“It was just so outrageous,” he said. “The fact that someone can say something completely false that can destroy somebody’s life, it’s just wrong. Where’s the moral compass?”

Of course Powerline and Limbaugh will say that they only reported the claim and didn’t endorse it. And yet their minions were successfully worked into a lather by this story.

More people should be doing this kind of thing. Right wing bloggers (and media) are so completely deranged at this point they’ll fall for anything. They need to have their noses thoroughly rubbed in it.

Love this story. It’s not limited the opposition either, we (or I) fell for the GWBush Nat Guard story, until Charles helped debunked it. Why? Because it fits our narrative. We knew he was a dick, so when a story about him being a dick comes out, we all said, yeah that sounds right. That’s the sign of a well though out lie. Just enough truth to get you to bite.

Which is why they’re likely to default to attacking him while asserting that they’re really the “victims” here. It’s not that they published bullshit because it fit their bias, it’s that they’re being kept from the “truth” by all the liberal “lies.”

Isn’t John Hinderacker a lawyer for the Kochs? I dunno. Just askin’.

Powerline was attacking Obama the first second after Benghazi, gasping and hyperventilating over the fact that some said, the attacks were provoked by a video that mocked and insulted muslims and their god.

My favorite part of that video is when Obama personally starts calling out the climate deniers as know nothing idiots and the ‘anger translator’ has to walk him back. It makes me wonder if the whole purpose for the skit was to give Obama a way to publicly call Inhofe an asshole. Obama really went for the insults with gusto. Yay for him.

“I myself was to experience how easily one is taken in by a lying and censored press and radio in a totalitarian state. Though unlike most Germans I had daily access to foreign newspapers, especially those of London, Paris and Zurich, which arrived the day after publication, and though I listened regularly to the BBC and other foreign broadcasts, my job necessitated the spending of many hours a day in combing the German press, checking the German radio, conferring with Nazi officials and going to party meetings. It was surprising and sometimes consternating to find that notwithstanding the opportunities I had to learn the facts and despite one’s inherent distrust of what one learned from Nazi sources, a steady diet over the years of falsifications and distortions made a certain impression on one’s mind and often misled it. No one who has not lived for years in a totalitarian land can possibly conceive how difficult it is to escape the dread consequences of a regime’s calculated and incessant propaganda. Often in a German home or office or sometimes in a casual conversation with a stranger in a restaurant, a beer hall, a cafe, I would meet with the most outlandish assertions from seemingly educated and intelligent persons. It was obvious that they were parroting some piece of nonsense they had heard on the radio or read in the newspapers. Sometimes one was tempted to say as much, but on such occasions one was met with such a stare of incredulity, such a shock of silence, as if one had blasphemed the Almighty, that one realized how useless it was even to try to make contact with a mind which had become warped and for whom the facts of life had become what Hitler and Goebbels, with their cynical disregard for truth, said they were.” -William L. Shirer, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich

Careful with putting it as you just did. I know you’re not saying insurgents who murdered women and children were good guys, but others might read it that way and turn your words against you.

Note: It should be remembered that the Kikuyu insurgency (which never called itself the ‘Mau-Mau’) had a legitimate grievance at its root. Yes, the insurgents acted very badly, but the Kikuyu had been the subject of intolerable discrimination by the white dominate colonial legislature, culminating in an admission of non-whites into said legislature than gave Indians and Arabs far more seats per capita than blacks. This, like South Africa’s spending twice as much on an Indian’s education as that spent on a black African, was the government making clear that blacks were the “lowest of the low” in their country. That such attitudes fostered revolt is not surprising.

To take it any other way means that ralphie thought Newt was trying to compliment Obama. I get that you are amazingly pedantic, so not sure how you would take phrase ‘dog whistle’ out of context.

48 Dark_Falcon  Apr 26, 2015 3:09:44pm

And the first round is over in the NHL west as the Minnesota Wild trounce the St. Louis Blues 4-1. This win sends the Wild on to meet their 2nd round nemesis the Chicago Blackhawks once more. And once more I see the Blackhawks coming away with the win.

The other Western Conference series will pit the Calgary Flames against the Anaheim Ducks. So we have the tar sands versus the OC.

68 Shiplord Kirel  Apr 26, 2015 3:34:59pm

The slaughter of white civilians during the Mau-Mau insurgency was, and still is, vastly exaggerated by the usual suspects. It was massively propagandized at the time and remains an effective dog whistle on the racist right to this day.
According to official British figures, the Mau Mau caused the following civilian casualties during the 5 years of the emergency:

Native Kenyans killed: 1,819
Native Kenyans wounded: 916
South Asians killed: 26
South Asians wounded: 36
Europeans killed: 32
Europeans wounded: 26

There were around 200 deaths in the security forces. These aren’t broken down by race but the majority were African soldiers and policemen.

More than 10,000 alleged Mau Mau were killed outright in military and police operations and 1090 were judicially executed (more than the French executed in Algeria).

The brutality of the insurgents is well documented, of course, with horrors like the Lari massacre, but most of this was directed against fellow Africans.

At the same time, the conduct of the British colonial police is nearly beyond belief, with ghastly concentration camps, draconian search, detention, and pass rules, and many documented accounts of torture, murder, and abuse of every description.

I thought about this while I was watching Foyle’s War a while back. It is a wonderful show and Michael Kitchen is one of the greatest actors of the age, but more than one episode went out of its way to contrast British tolerance and fairness with the segregationist American racial attitudes of the time. This is valid enough for the specific time and place but it also contrasts very sharply indeed with the conduct of the British themselves in their overseas empire, both then and a few years later in Kenya.

Here’s a photo of Larry Reid, Harry’s brother, when he was arrested on a variety of charges, over a month after HR’s exercise accident.

foxnews.com

If Harry fell into a cabinet, as he stated, after an elastic band on the equipment snapped, there’s no doubt in my mind that he suffered the injuries he has been treated for; after all, he’s 75 and no matter how healthy he might be, aging people are more prone to debilitating injuries such as he suffered.

Which reminds me: I must be more careful with the new chef knives I recently purchased. : )

Btw, I can remember the Mau Mau insurgency, though I was very little (7 in 1956). We lived in England at the time and the Kenyan emergency was the subject of saturation news coverage. My parents would usher us out of the room when the TV news came on, for fear we would hear the ghastly details of the demonic Africans and their barbarous atrocities. Naturally I made a point of hearing as much as I could.

Today was not my best day on LGF, and I ask your forgiveness, but I also swell with, not pride, but humility that this awesome community of people has seen fit to uptick me that much.

So my ex sister in law’s daughter rescued a cat from an acquaintance who was going to take it to the shelter. SIL asked me if I was interested. I thought about it for two days, decided ya, this is the time. I’m over here to meet the cat and her (teenage) daughter decided she has the power & said no.

The cat is so sweet & I’m quite upset.

This is when I reflect & am so glad I was never a parent, because how this kid rules the fuck over them. Daughter does nothing in cat care mom does all. She has 2 other mom cared for cats. But mom has no power over the teen.

It was really, really awful. The gist? Boys are supposed to make all the money and buy girls things and girls return the favor with just looking good and providing whatever he wants. Singing “Spending all his money on me”and posing “sexily”. None of those girls looked over 12 with the youngest looking about 8. They’re supposed to be sisters in real life so the parents are obviously treating them like cash cows.

Have could they be having any fun? And wearing stiletto heels and wedgies on top of everything else? Poor things, the beginnings of dysfunction for them, although I hope not, but kids can be impressionable.

You’d be surprised at the “positive” comments and 62,000+ “likes” over on Youtube, along with almost 8M views. Or maybe not, considering how twisted a lot of pop culture is and how it’s aimed specifically at those kids to be prolific consumers.

Even worse than the sexualization is the message it sends to girls AND boys about what their roles in life should be. This is like a nightmare corporate vision of good little mindless consumers neatly slotted into their expected sexist positions. Awful. Just awful.

This got my attention because my son has the same family: 4 daughters and one son about the same ages as this group (except my son’s youngest is three). They are very talented and love to put on “shows” and make family videos, except all their “productions” are age appropriate (like “Sound of Music” type songs) and locked for family viewing only.
