Video: President Obama’s Statement on Baltimore Violence

“We, as a country, need to do some soul-searching”
US News • Views: 28,217

YouTube

Here’s the statement President Obama gave earlier today on the violence in Baltimore; he appropriately called out the rioters and looters as criminals, but also made the very serious point that the violence distracted from “multiple days of peaceful protests” focused on “entirely legitimate concerns of these communities in Baltimore” that “frankly, didn’t get that much attention.”

I would have appreciated it more had he called out the mayor for the city shutting down public transit just as schools were letting out and throwing kids off the buses and onto the street where cops were out in riot gear.

It’s hard to believe Obama is still so calm, reasoned, thoughtful, at this stage of his presidency. Proud of how he’s handled the pressures.

I’m waiting for his WHCD speech next year. The election will be in full swing, he’ll be on his way out the door, etc. It’s going to be fun.

Ta Nehisi Coates, last night:

“…it’s worth remembering what, specifically, happened to Freddie Gray. An officer made eye contact with Gray. Gray, for unknown reasons, ran. The officer and his colleagues then detained Gray. They found him in possession of a switchblade. They arrested him while he yelled in pain. And then, within an hour, his spine was mostly severed. A week later, he was dead. What specifically was the crime here? What particular threat did Freddie Gray pose? Why is mere eye contact and then running worthy of detention at the hands of the state? Why is Freddie Gray dead?

The people now calling for nonviolence are not prepared to answer these questions. Many of them are charged with enforcing the very policies that led to Gray’s death, and yet they can offer no rational justification for Gray’s death and so they appeal for calm. But there was no official appeal for calm when Gray was being arrested. There was no appeal for calm when Jerriel Lyles was assaulted. (“The blow was so heavy. My eyes swelled up. Blood was dripping down my nose and out my eye.”) There was no claim for nonviolence on behalf of Venus Green. (“Bitch, you ain’t no better than any of the other old black bitches I have locked up.”) There was no plea for peace on behalf of Starr Brown. (“They slammed me down on my face,” Brown added, her voice cracking. “The skin was gone on my face.”)

When nonviolence is preached as an attempt to evade the repercussions of political brutality, it betrays itself. When nonviolence begins halfway through the war with the aggressor calling time out, it exposes itself as a ruse. When nonviolence is preached by the representatives of the state, while the state doles out heaps of violence to its citizens, it reveals itself to be a con. And none of this can mean that rioting or violence is “correct” or “wise,” any more than a forest fire can be “correct” or “wise.” Wisdom isn’t the point tonight. Disrespect is. In this case, disrespect for the hollow law and failed order that so regularly disrespects the community.”

Worth noting that northeast cops typically use the switchblade charge on any folding knife, no matter how small or what the actual construction is. I don’t think anybody has seriously carried a switchblade since the 1970’s.

No one outside of actors in bad 1950’s movies carried a switchblade. The knives were so poorly made that they were more dangerous to the wielder than the intended victim. It’s a bullshit charge.

I read last December where NYPD started going after workers from packing and the theater district for carrying work knives and box cutters.

One guy mentioned how a cop took what he thought was a perfectly legal pocket knife and squeezed it while flicking his wrist a peculier way. The knife opened, although it had not been designed to open that way.

The cops are being taught this little trick to get felony arrests. The knives are still legal to sell or to have in your home, but illegal to actually transport in any fashion as interpreted right now.

Hm. I note that it was taken for granted that the riots were wholly instigated by residents. Nowhere do people ponder the possibility that fuck-ups by police and the city contributed to it. Shutting down mass transit before school let out puts hundreds, if not thousands, of high school kids out on the street. Mass number of people will be seen as potential rioters by police. Natural horse play by teens could have someone shoved into a policeman. Over-reaction by police then escalates a tense situation.

Implausible?

The Associated Press obtained the recordings, which were part of a federal case that was later dismissed.

“It’s kind of a thing that I need to go back to, to scare the sh*t out of me, to make me feel good about life,” Bates says on the recording. “I love that. That was just great.”

Bates, who built an insurance company that he later sold for $6 million, told the company’s new president - who secretly recorded the remarks — that he never did like taking orders from others.

“I don’t do well with that,” Bates said. “I don’t do well with direction. I never have, since the first grade. My first-grade teacher and I had a problem with it — I’ve had problems throughout my life with it.”

He also suggested on the recording that he performed favors for his attorney while working at the sheriff’s office in exchange for his legal fees.

“I haven’t paid him yet,” Bates said, chuckling. “Let’s say — I mean, he knows I’ve done some sh*t for him at the sheriff’s office for some of his clients.”

The attorney, Clark Brewster, confirmed the recording was authentic but disputed its relevance to the Harris shooting.

“This was two guys at a restaurant talking frankly about their experiences, and, unbeknownst to Mr. Bates, Mr. (Bryan) Berman apparently was surreptitiously taping him,” Brewster said. “It has nothing to do with the shooting, I can tell you that.”

He also denied knowledge of the favors that Bates referenced, saying that his client may have been dropping names in hopes of having the plaintiffs to drop the case.

I just googled him and he’s apparently very racist, doesn’t deal in facts, has worked at all the major right-wing fake “news” organizations, and is a provocateur type who has actually been banned from Twitter in the past, and is so much of a troublemaker that most of the other right-wing fake journalists don’t get along with him. He’s like Drudge minus the huge fonts, or Breitbart minus that one time he died… and also in both cases minus the web traffic since his site gets a LOT less than either of theirs.

My brother and I were having a conversation a lot like this. We both agreed while the rioting and looting is not to be condoned that there seems to be lacking empathy or sympathy for what these neighborhoods and conditions are like.

Empathy with those living there, sympathy with their conditions, but not sympathy (or condoning) rioting and looting. Sounds like liberal “nuance” crap to me.

tl;dr: 40 years of Reaganomics coming home to roost combined with the police acting as occupation forces rather than law enforcement.

I want to believe in hell because I pray #40 is paying for all the evil he caused here and around the world that our grandchildren will still be trying to repair.

He really was not only an awful president but an awful person too. I really believe that.

As I’ve said elsewhere, the majority of the people simply have zero empathy for the minority experience in America and want to live in their happy comfortable cocoons of faux-meritocracy and faux-respectability, rather than confront that there’s still institutional hurdles and landmines that make life miserable for anyone not reasonably pale enough, or without the ‘non-ethnic’ name, forget the societal hurdles and landmines that support and build off the institutional ones in a self-feeding cycle.

It’s the Calvinistic, Alger-esque ‘if you’re not succeeding, you’re just a failure who doesn’t try hard enough’, ‘if you’re being harassed, you probably brought it on yourself’ ‘if you’re being arrested, you have to be guilty of something’ bullshit fantasy that acts as a footnote to the American Dream.

And my biggest problem remains with those who act like the looting is the end of times but don’t have so much a word for the man who lost his life. The stores can be rebuilt. The Grays aren’t getting back their son.

re: #39 gwangung

I would like to know why the officials shut down public transportation too, which ended up leaving kids with no way to get home. That was a stupid decision and possibly led to the problems we saw yesterday.

Have to say, my brother and I had our fair share of fights when we were teenagers but he really understands and I think this pardon me if it’s overdone but he really does have a lot of African American friends and he has witnessed first hand the mistreatment that happens to them. One can hope it will at least cause a tiny bit of an actual discussion of the issues.

I’d love to believe he could win and get a majority in Congress because that’s what it would take to actually fix somethings. I don’t know how people don’t get this simple difference. It’s the same willful misunderstanding behind empathy vs. sympathy. The former does not necessarily imply the latter. You can understand the impetus behind something without being supportive of it. You can understand (or at least attempt to understand) why something like a riot can explode without saying the riot was a justifiable good.

Because it is a NUANCE. Which is dead as a part of our public and political discourse. You are either fully in favor of or diametrically opposed to an issue.

I found Buck similarly amusing.

That said, Christie was bitching on the radio the other day about his poll numbers. Actually claimed it wasn’t his fault, it was the media essentially out to get him.

Worth noting that northeast cops typically use the switchblade charge on any folding knife, no matter how small or what the actual construction is. I don’t think anybody has seriously carried a switchblade since the 1970’s.

I’m jumping in late here but, I think Coates’ argument against non violence is wrong. The civil rights movement in the 60’s was a non violent movement. They certainly saw violence committed against them. ML King did not justify the use of violence against these (often police) aggressors. King and his followers never lost the moral high ground. The shamed their opponents in the court of public opinion. Change happened as swiftly as it did because of the non violent protests - King knew that burning and looting would play into the hands of the racists.

[Embedded content]

You know what just dawned on me that’s pretty weird? While the RWNJ are shrieking about how POTUS is going to try to institute martial law to stop the 2016 elections, it’s actually GOP governors who are getting state military & police involved in things—Texas governor (GOP), NJ governor (GOP), Maryland governor (GOP). Notice a pattern here?

The fact that the Democratic mayor of Baltimore made the request to the Maryland governor seems to have made the RWNJs a bit nervous as wingnut-friendly RealClearPolitics posted this: General Commanding National Guard In Baltimore: “This Is Not Martial Law”

But note that the very last sentence says:

A stunned looking Gov. Larry Hogan stands behind her.

Stunned? He’s the one that called them in yesterday, why would he be looking stunned? These assholes are scare-mongering, as usual, but this time they might actually get people killed.

Edit: Governor Hogan’s statement on 4/27:

“When the mayor called me, which quite frankly we were glad that she finally did, instantly we signed the executive order. We already had our entire team prepared,” he said. “We were trying to get in touch with the mayor for quite some time, she finally made that call and we immediately took action.”

I doubt that’s why he’s running. There is no better platform from which to speak and help guide the conversation than as a presidential candidate. He wants that debate to get his message out and, when called for, call bullshit. I welcome his voice with enthusiasm and thank him for putting himself out there.

The movement in the 60s was a movement. The police violence in the 2010s is not a movement, and it’s wrong to say a police officer can call for a non-violent movement in response to police violence.

What do you mean about police violence not being a movement? How was it a movement in the civil rights era? Pragmatically, mob violence is not the way to solve police violence. (I think) nonviolence is a much more effective means to end police violence. I don’t care who calls for non violence (or if it’s self serving on the part of the police). You are not going to make it better by burning down buildings.

“When school let out that afternoon, police were in the area equipped with full riot gear. According to eyewitnesses in the Mondawmin neighborhood, the police were stopping busses and forcing riders, including many students who were trying to get home, to disembark. Cops shut down the local subway stop. They also blockaded roads near the Mondawmin Mall and Frederick Douglass High School, which is across the street from the mall, and essentially corralled young people in the area. That is, they did not allow the after-school crowd to disperse.”

There’s also the difference between running for the Democratic nomination and going third party like Nader did twice. As long as Sanders doesn’t intend to ignore the results and torpedo the eventual nominee’s chances he should be welcome to participate in the process. It’s actually a nice show of support from a nominal independent.

re: #228 qubit2020

I’m jumping in late here but, I think Coates’ argument against non violence is wrong. The civil rights movement in the 60’s was a non violent movement. They certainly saw violence committed against them. ML King did not justify the use of violence against these (often police) aggressors. King and his followers never lost the moral high ground. The shamed their opponents in the court of public opinion. Change happened as swiftly as it did because of the non violent protests - King knew that burning and looting would play into the hands of the racists.

Yeah…but King didn’t achieve his nonviolent movement by magic. His protestors trained and studied how to not react. It was a time-consuming process, and people did get turned down.

What we keep seeing is a core of people trying to arrange a nonviolent protest, but they’re doing so in an area with lots of crime and problems (including failures by local government and police violence), a dense population, and on short notice. When a “riot” breaks out, it’s immediately impossible to sort out protestors from lookee-loos not involved with the protest from opportunists who see a chance for mischief. There’s just a mess of people in varying degrees of panic.

And what’s worse is that there are individuals in law enforcement that have an incentive to provoke a violent response: they don’t want scrutiny or accountability.

Yeah I’m all for a field of real candidates. Sanders, Webb, O’Malley. Chaffee, maybe. Wouldn’t mind seeing either of VA’s Senators dip their toes in the water. Would be good experience for them.

Both of the VA Senators have come out for Hillary. Tim Kaine was the first—he announced for Hillary in May 2014. Not sure exactly when Warner did, but when he spoke at our convention this past weekend, he announced for Hillary.

I love Bernie Sanders, but he’s too old and would probably not get a single cross-over vote, what with being a SOCIALIST.

Webb seems to only care about the military and Jim Webb (he was supposed to be at our event, but sent a surrogate because he wanted to go to the nerd prom.)

Which brings us to O’Malley—he’s really working it. He, too was going to the nerd prom, but flew in from San Francisco (and got stuck in Birmingham for quite awhile) to speak at our convention before heading to DC.

Chafee was there as well, and I thought he was really a nice guy, but he didn’t get a very warm reception.

Hillary sent Terry McAuliffe and there was a bit of grumbling about why she wasn’t there herself, but overall, her peeps got a good reception.

Fucking bureaucrats need to cut the red tape and do their jobs.

Can you say, “Massive fail?” Looks like Chuck has given up on it and is now trying to hide it.

But he just had his grand launch on it Monday. (I guess the first couple of weeks was the “off broadway road trial”)

As I mentioned earlier, the NJ troopers have their own problems with racial discrimination and bigotry. I was talking with one years ago who gleefully admitted to tuning up a suspect with officers on the side of a highway.

So, maybe not the best crew to send into the mix.

It’s also an incredibly transparent “boost my poll numbers, look it what a boss I am” move by my esteemed governor. Especially on the heels of his “The media is out to get me” whiniest on the radio the other day.

NJST has issues. NJST in Maryland will have a bigger issue. “Now what do we do?” Go out and be seen. “Why?” Because the crowd isn’t that angry yet.

“Hello. I’m here to tell you you must move on out…”

I lived in a neighborhood like that in Cincinnati back in the early to mid-70s.
It looked horrible to outsiders, but we had a great integrated community despite the slumlords.
Random people passing by would tsk tsk but couldn’t see indoors, where most of the apartments were amazingly decorated and very well kept (again, despite the lack of interest in maintenance by the slumlords).
Oddly enough, the only “bad elements” were the white trash Appalachian folks who started moving in who were used to anything goes. And I say that as a current white Appalachian who has a couple of those white trashy neighbors here in the holler whose properties are so stereotypically trashy and make all of us here the butt of late night jokes.

“Mondawmin is perhaps the most diverse square mile in Baltimore in terms of social class. It is a historically African American community composed of young professionals, retirees, and working people, where each block has its own character. Some streets are lined with trees and marble steps, front porches and gardens. The neighborhood clusters around Mondawmin Mall an urban shopping mall, and features schools ranging from elementary to four-year college, green space on wide boulevards and small streets, convenient small businesses, many active churches and dedicated neighborhood associations. Mondawmin is a community rich in character and history.”

Note that Charles deleted the flounce. We were all declared haters among other things in the now deleted comment.

More than a couple years ago he said this was a hate site. He backpedaled a lot from that but it was really silly.

Lostlakehiker was half-reasonable, and half-nuts, mostly, unfortunately, about matters of race.

The stupid “Let me take a quote from someone you like and then prance around when you denounce it” thing really grinds my gears, because it’s so easy and proves nothing. I mean, you can ‘quote’ Chris Rock saying “You know what I hate? n*****s!” and it obviously is completely different out of context than in.

When I saw Obama’s statement on the news, the only portion they showed was him condemning the rioters. Nothing about him talking about the conditions that led to the riot.

Quoting out of context is cheap-ass stupid shit.
