Jeb Bush Is a Fan of “Scientific Racist” Charles Murray

Jeb Bush, who’s currently being positioned as the “moderate” among the GOP’s 2016 Clown Car Full of Loons, said today he’s a big fan of white nationalist Charles Murray’s books.

Lowry asked Bush, “… is there any policy or anything public officials can do to help turn back what has been a rising tide of family breakdown crossing decades now?”

“Absolutely, there is,” Bush, a likely 2016 Republican presidential candidate, said. “It’s not exactly the core. My views on this were shaped a lot on this by Charles Murray’s book, except I was reading the book and I was waiting for the last chapter with the really cool solutions — didn’t quite get there.”

Later in the interview, Lowry asked Bush what he likes to read. Again, he cited Murray.

“I like Charles Murray books to be honest with you, which means I’m a total nerd I guess,” Bush said.

In case you don’t know the name, Murray was responsible for “The Bell Curve,” an academically suspect book that argues blacks are less intelligent than whites for genetic reasons; a book that gave rise to the “scientific racism” movement increasingly popular on the right wing.

Murray is currently a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

Some more “Wisdom” from Charles Murray:

Try to imagine a GOP presidential candidate saying in front of the cameras, “One reason that we still have poverty in the United States is that a lot of poor people are born lazy.” You cannot imagine it because that kind of thing cannot be said. And yet this unimaginable statement merely implies that when we know the complete genetic story, it will turn out that the population below the poverty line in the United States has a configuration of the relevant genetic makeup that is significantly different from the configuration of the population above the poverty line. This is not unimaginable. It is almost certainly true.

-Murray, Charles (January 24, 2000). “Deeper into the Brain”. American Enterprise Institute.

In audio obtained by the Burnt Orange Report, American Enterprise Institute scholar Charles Murray can be heard explaining to an audience at the University of Texas that his views on women had not changed since a 2005 paper, in which he asserted that one or “maybe” two women had played significant roles in the field of philosophy.

When a woman at the event on Tuesday asked Murray if he still believed what he wrote, Murray quipped, “Who do you have in mind?”

Murray argued that in “certain traditions” like literature, women had been at the “peak of accomplishment.” But he said that he could only recall one important female philosopher, “and she was not a significant thinker in the estimation of historians of philosophy.”

“So, yeah, I still stick with that,” he insisted. “Until somebody gives me evidence to the contrary, I’ll stick with that statement.”

It really doesn’t matter. Those who agree with Murray will be praising Bush. Those who don’t even know who Murray is and hold the same views will still vote for him when the rest of the Klown Kar Kandidates don’t survive the primary, because the entire R base is racist as fuck.

“The last chapter with the really cool solutions”??!!

Give me a fucking break. I’ve read the Bell Curve, and in that book the ‘last chapter with the really cool solutions’ was truly feeble. The rest of the Bell Curve at least had a thesis and made out a case (a repellant case for racism, to be sure). Its conclusion was mindless drivel and pap because Charles Murray was too chickenshit to give any real recommendations based on his thesis, such as ethnic cleansing, pogroms and/or genocide. That was for the readers to fill in.

Since scientific racists like Murray are notorious for never changing their habits, I’m sure his new book has exactly the same weakness at the end.

Finally, I agree that this is more evidence that there is simply no such thing as a moderate Republican.

28 CriticalDragon1177  Apr 30, 2015 4:21:20pm

Charles Johnson,

“moderate” doesn’t seem to mean much anymore when it comes to Republican presidential candidates. The GOP needs to lose a bunch of elections, and hopefully that we lead them to actually pick some genuinely moderate and reasonable candidates. This “scientific” racism nonsense should be over with, at least when it comes to mainstream presidential candidates by now.

I read “Coming Apart” a couple years ago, kind of by accident, as the subtitle was intriguing and I didn’t recall Murray’s name and previous work. To say his logic is flawed would be an understatement.
He was inclined to blame people in a no-win financial situation for their problems, ascribing it essentially to a lack of moral character.

31 GeorgetownPress  Apr 30, 2015 4:22:31pm

I have not read Charles Murray’s Coming Apart (the book that Bush is referencing), but I did watch an long interview of him about that book on TV Ontario’s The Agenda. His comments in that interview did not come across as racist, rather he emphasized the similarity between black and white family breakdown; the difference being that black family breakdown was “30 years ahead” of white family breakdown. That is, black and white America was converging in regards to family breakdown, but the social context (not any genetic difference) meant that it occurred earlier in black America.

I cannot say whether Bell Curve is racist, but condemning Jeb Bush as a racist because he references a book by an author who also wrote something racist 20 years ago is like condemning Obama as a communist because of his relationship with Bill Ayers.

Not really. At the very least, Bush cites Murray (who has not changed his stripes at all since the Bell Curve came out) as an ongoing present-day inspiration.

Obama certainly didn’t do that with respect to Ayers.

Too hot to take the dogs to the beach - but I did it - twice - anyway. Everywhere I look it’s hot. Just looked in the mirror, and I’m hot…okay, different kind of hot…more of a hawt!!, but you get my drift.

I’d go surfing, but I know the second I put on my wetsuit I’m going to be…hot. And the water temp is already up to 57 degrees…FIFTY FUCKING SEVEN! …IN APRIL! (May is tomorrow). BALTIMORE (WJZ ) — From the beginning, the investigation into what killed Freddie Gray has centered on what happened inside the police transport van.

We knew there was another prisoner inside the van and tonight we hear from him.

WJZ’s Mike Schuh is the first to speak with Donta Allen about what he heard.

“I am Donta Allen. I am the one who was in the van with Freddie Gray,” Allen said.

The one who the police commissioner calls the second prisoner in the van.

“The second prisoner who was picked up said that he didn’t see any harm done to Freddie at all,” Commissioner Anthony Batts said. “What he has said us that he heard Freddie thrashing about.”

But Allen wants to set something straight.

“All I did was go straight to the station, but I heard a little banging like he was banging his head,” he said.

He tells WJZ he’s angry about an internal police report published in The Washington Post.

“And they trying to make it seem like I told them that, I made it like Freddie Gray did that to hisself (sic),” Allen said. “Why the [expletive] would he do that to hisself (sic)?”

So this afternoon going across campus, I walked by a couple of ferns that are brown and dead because of the drought (not that common around here because we have fog). I haz a sad.

And the House just passed a - balanced! - budget resolution that drops yet more money on the military and guts social services. If you have any Republican friends left, rub their noses in it. (Clinton One managed to run a surplus without soaking the poor.)

And they are gasping at the events in Baltimore.

It is hot today (73 degrees currently). Too hot to swim - but I did it anyway. Pool felt refreshing, but a bit warm (it was 84 degrees at the club). Hot tub - also warm.

Normal temp is 52-54, so we’re already pushing into the danger zone - last year it got to 67. That’s when you see those pretty fuzzy little harbor seals rotting dead from starvation on the beach because there is no food source as it’s all gone deeper to cold water.

I fucking hate global warming. I can’t even bitch about the heat without thinking about the ramifications.

It’s going to be a long, hot summer.

Cruz ducks question about blacks panhandling

One day after Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said Hispanics don’t panhandle because it would be shameful for them, the Republican presidential contender is refusing to offer an opinion about African-Americans who beg for money on the street.

Asked Thursday what he thought of them, Cruz turned away without speaking, […]

Speaking yesterday at a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce meeting, Cruz recalled once having lunch with a Hispanic entrepreneur who asked when the last time was he had seen a Hispanic panhandler.

“It’s a great question,” Cruz said, adding, “I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a Hispanic panhandler, and the reason is in our community it would be shameful to be begging on the street.”

Well Ted, you don’t get out much I see.

On the WaPo bullshit story—Charles Pierce, reminiscing about a certain incident in Boston (ah yes, I remember it well):

Most of all, it reminded me of a guy named Willie Bennett.

On a rainy night in 1989, a well-dressed, well-spoken thug named Charles Stuart capped his pregnant wife as they were returning from a childbirth class in the Mission Hill neighborhood of Boston.

As part of the plan, Stuart shot himself in the stomach. He told the Boston police that an unidentified black man had done the crime. This was a nice white couple from the suburbs shot in a largely African American neighborhood.

The Boston cops went completely wild, strip-searching men at random, busting down doors, and rousting everyone who looked at them crossways. Then, they heard about a kid who had been joking about his uncle’s having shot the couple. His uncle was named Willie Bennett. The cops picked him up and then fed him into the media maw, drowning out the complaints from Mission Hill about the excessive police response to the incident.

As The Master put it in another context, the newspapers, especially Mike Barnicle of The Boston Globe, went along for the ride. Not long after, my wife and I attended the annual dinner of the Boston community development organization, and we were sitting next to several of the city’s old-line African American activists.

“He shot her himself,” one of them said. “Everybody in the neighborhood knows that.”

He was right. The cops were wrong.

What’s funny is that he only has himself to blame. If he hadn’t pre-emptively brought up the allegation in an informal exchange with Greg Howard it absolutely never would have become a thing. By being the first one to bring it up in conversation he gave Howard license to write about it, practically dared him to actually. Then followed all of his toothless threats of a filing libel lawsuit and demands for a retraction over an allegation that Howard never actually made.

The whole thing was a classic own goal.

“The holding cells are approximately 10 by 10 (some slightly larger), with one open sink and toilet. The women were instructed that the water was “bad” and that they shouldn’t drink it. There are no beds — just a concrete cube. No blankets or pillows. The cells were designed to hold people for a few hours, not a few days. In the one cell which housed 15 women, there wasn’t even enough room for them all to lie down at the same time. Three times a day, the guards brought each woman four slices of bread, a slice of American cheese, and a small bag of cookies. They sometimes got juice, but water was scarce, as the COs had to wheel a watercooler through every so often (the regular water being “broken”).”

I just can’t even imagine.

“Interviewing these women was emotionally exhausting. Quite a few of them began crying — so happy to finally see someone who might know why they were there, or perhaps how they might get out of this Kafkaesque nightmare. These women came from all walks of life. We interviewed high school students, college students, people with graduate degrees, people with GEDs, single women, married women, mothers, the well-employed, the unemployed, black women, and white women. Almost all of them had no record. Those that did had things like DUIs and very minor misdemeanors. Our group didn’t interview any of the men on the other side, but my colleagues reported very similar situations. On the men’s side there were journalists and activists, as well as high school kids with no records, barely 18 years old.”

This is good news, I think. I’m an occasional gamer now, but back in the day I played a TON of DOOM 2 mods.

It was an interesting idea, but the compensation was 75% for them, 25% for the modder. It was also poorly thought through because most of the more complex mods incorporate content from other mods.

Two other things worked against the idea. First, the amount of time and learning that it takes to create a noteworthy mod is immense. You’d have to sell many copies in order to realize more than a couple of bucks an hour for your work. Second, mods have been free for so long that gamers were outraged at anyone having the temerity to suggest that they pay for them.

That will be a labor of true love. The longer a car sits, the harder it is to restore. If the engine has not been run in a long while, the gasoline has probably dried to a kind of varnish in the carb(s), and those will need overhauling. Plus, the cylinder walls have probably rusted a bit and/or the rings have rusted to the walls, so squirting some penetrating oil into each cylinder before you crank the engine is advised.

Both of those are in the plan, along with a bunch of other things (changing all the fluids, checking the hoses, changing the belts, new tires). I’m a pretty fair hand at all things mechanical after spending my formative years in my dad’s barn, maintaining his fleet of antique John Deere tractors. Their carbs are a lot more primitive than the one on this car, but the operating principle is the same and most of it is just gasket work and cleaning all the little micro-passages.

In addition to dropping some oil down the spark plug holes prior to turning it over, I’m also going to wiggle it with a breaker bar by hand rather than hitting the starter straight off. I don’t want to bend anything if it’s stuck, and if I can work it loose gently by hand, then everything else should add up to a purring kitten by the time I’m done. Then next year maybe I can fix some of the weather damage - it needs a new vinyl top, and Mrs. Fish says it’ll probably need some interior refurbishing from mouse attacks.

I learned that last part from an old-timer mechanic who worked on my old heap years ago. Also, cranking the engine a few times with the coil wire disconnected and grounded will push the oil around inside and get things ready for when the engine is running for real.

Now I want an old car to work on. Not too many these parts, China does not yet have a huge used car market.

Pull the plugs, cut the compression and she will spin free with just a bump of the starter. It will help ‘fish even if he wants to spin it by hand with the front pulley, etc.

re: #153 thedopefishlives

In addition to dropping some oil down the spark plug holes prior to turning it over, I’m also going to wiggle it with a breaker bar by hand rather than hitting the starter straight off. I don’t want to bend anything if it’s stuck, and if I can work it loose gently by hand, then everything else should add up to a purring kitten by the time I’m done. Then next year maybe I can fix some of the weather damage - it needs a new vinyl top, and Mrs. Fish says it’ll probably need some interior refurbishing from mouse attacks.

It’ll need de-mousing, for sure. I lived in the countryside for 16 years, and the damned mice loved building a nest in my daily driver, just below the heater core and squirrel cage fan in the HVAC system. After blenderizing a few hapless mice with the fan, I finally installed some wire mesh to keep the little buggers out.

Plus, no more smell of warmed up mouse piss.

They refer to 1 installation. I will say in advance I don’t know what a kickstrip is or where the installation takes place (in the store or at home). If it’s at home, the work time may include the time the driver meandered around town, hitting a drive-thru on the way, and counting all that time to the job. The customer may only see the installer for five minutes, but maybe that’s how the time gets skewed

re: #97 BeachDem

The cops were wrong.

esquire.com

I’m way behind.

But.

The press legitimizes the racists, no research required or ever done. Susan Smith, the horrible woman who killed her kids and blamed it on black men.

They ran with this story until it was bullshit.

That’s my biggest fear right now. I know there is a nest (current or past is undetermined) inside the glove box. I’ll have a look-see when I pull it out to see if they have gotten after any of the wiring, either under the dash or under the hood. If it looks reasonably intact, this should be smooth sailing; if it’s been attacked and destroyed, well, it might be time to call in a professional. A full wiring harness is above my pay grade.

Cherry is great… so is Apple. My favorite would have to be Blueberry, or any other berry-based pie. I’m not a huge fan of peach or shoo-fly pie, but I’ll eat a piece or two to be polite. :)

When I did RAGBRAI (a 10,000 rider bike ride across Iowa) I tried to have a piece of pie at each and every little town we passed through. (and there were many each day). I found that any pie is better than no pie, and that I can’t eat that much pie and still be able to ride.

It’s the only time I’ve done a multiday bike ride and weighted MORE at the end than at the start.

Must be Midwest thing. All of my mom’s side of the family all live in South Dakota and Minnesota. I first ate rhubarb pie as a very young child over Christmas at my mom’s relatives in rural SW Minnesota.

I love rhubarb pie. I’ll be in Vegas this weekend, do you think they’ll have some there? Been too long since I’ve had rhubarb pie.

I’m sure it is a Midwest thing. There are a lot of what you’d call “rustic” recipes around here, like the vinegar pie. Very meat and potatoes folk, us of the heartland.

Chuck is a classic sociopath. He’s capable of being charming to people if he thinks they can help him in some way - like Joe Rogan, a guy with millions of followers, or to reporters who haven’t encountered the real Chuck yet.

But he’s a snake, and he’ll turn on anyone as soon as he thinks they’re not useful to him.

The worst thing about Chuck is his idea that being a prick is a money maker.

Unless someone is a very good actor and careful not to drop out of character, a toxic persona on the Internet reveals a lot about what might be buried deep beneath a person’s real world mask. Bryan J, Fischer, for example, has a lot of buried anger or revulsion about something, or he couldn’t constantly be such a hateful bigot online. As for CCJ, I was thinking more along the lines of an awkward nice guy persona at first meeting — the kind of guy who will cheerfully pose for joint selfies and ingratiate himself to certain people, but will turn on that same person in an instant if something goes even slightly wrong.

I’m sure his ex-college GF has a lot of tales to tell, if she were willing to risk his wrath again.

Ant update: after coming home on Monday night to discover the catfood absolutely crawling with them, I have been waging war.

We haven’t seen them in the kitchen after cleaning up the feeders/mopping the floor between there and the bathroom they’ve been coming in through. Today I picked up some borax at the supermarket and mixed up a borax/sugar water solution. Cotton balls soaked in that are currently in the bathroom. The ants seem …partially interested.

I don’t have any peanut butter in the house or I’d do up some of that as well.

In the meantime, the cats have been disturbed by the appearance of the mop three times so far this week (normally they’re in hiding when the housekeeper is here) and are continually whiny because the feeders aren’t producing their food, dammit.

Fingers crossed something fucking works.

It’s true, that would be worse.

Because certain of our furry children are giant pigs, we have timed feeders. Giant huge timed feeders. The moat technique won’t work, so it’s been manual feeding since we got home. If I can get the problem corralled at the entry point (currently coming up under the toilet in the master bathroom, now that I’ve cut off the cracks in the grout by re-caulking), I’d be okay with putting the food back out, but… we’re not quite there yet.

We put a few tablespoons of boric acid and sugar water in those cheap semi-disposable plastic cup size containers. Make a couple decent size holes in the cover, and leave a little solution on the top to help the ants get the idea. Works for us.
You can also try disrupting their trails by cleaning the trails thoroughly to remove the scent they lay down.

Rubbish is part of a much bigger crisis, researchers and advocates say, as record numbers of sea lions have washed up on California’s shores thanks to changing wind patterns and warmer ocean waters. These creatures, top predators, serve as indicators of what else is happening in the ocean, said Shawn Johnson, director of Veterinary Science at the Marine Mammal Center.

“We know everything is connected — a change in the winds is leading to thousands of sea lions stranding on the beach,” Johnson said in a statement.

Maybe I just have a highly sensitive creep sensor. There are some people who just totally creep me out when I am around them. Tim Scott, our esteemed Senator, is one of them.

Any time I’ve been in the same room with him, I have an extreme visceral reaction, chills up and down my spine, and I can’t get away fast enough. There is just something about him that sets off alarms.

I believe, even if I didn’t know what I already know about him, that upchuck would cause the same reaction. There is just something creepy about his persona.

Still don’t get why Chuck was trying to deny that he’d been business partners with Joel S Gilbert earlier, and that the two of them launched GotNews together. Was that just his ego talking, a need to pretend he built that crapshack by himself?

Some people can’t help but exude their inner self, no matter how much they try to disguise it. Something in their manner, or their eyes, or speech patterns, or all of that can send up alarms. If dogs bark at them for no apparent reason, and toddlers avoid them or cry when nearby, chances are something is wrong.

A man is watching a little girl play in the park with her dog. He asks her what her name is.

“Blossom”.

He says “What a pretty name. How did you get such a pretty name?”

“When my momma was pregnant, she walked outside and a cherry blossom fell on her stomach just as she felt the first contraction, so she named me blossom.”

He says “What a beautiful name for such a beautiful girl. What is your dog’s name?”

“His name is Porky.”

He says “That is cute. How did he get that name?”

“He likes to fuck pigs.”

It is. We have a 4am wakeup, he’s in surgery at 7. Should be home by 10, assuming all goes well and traffic doesn’t suck too horribly on the way home.

I have the fixings for chicken noodle soup with matzoh balls (his request) and a bunch of other favorites to cook for him this weekend.

He was totally amazed that such a procedure was even possible.

“Yeah, they call it an Addadicktome.”

381 teleskiguy  Apr 30, 2015 9:44:35pm

The Aurora, CO theater shooting trial began on Monday. It’s expected to last five months. Survivors of the massacre are testifying.

On Tuesday, the prosecution’s first witness, Katie Medley, described how she was nine months pregnant when she went to see the movie with her husband Caleb, an aspiring stand-up comedian.

Her husband, who was shot through the eye, testified briefly from his wheelchair, just a few feet away from Holmes, who looked on expressionless.

The brain injury Caleb Medley suffered left him unable to walk or speak clearly. Instead, he pointed at an alphabet board to spell out his answers as he confirmed his name.

After the gunfire began, his wife said she quickly realized he was badly hurt: “I saw blood pouring from his face, and I knew he got shot in the head,” she told the hushed courtroom.

[…]

Another survivor, Munirih Gravelly, an employee of Aurora’s Buckley Air Force Base, went to the Century 16 multiplex with a friend who was killed there.

She said the movie had been playing for about 15 or 20 minutes when a tear gas canister was thrown into theater nine, and then the shooting started. She lay on the floor.

“I heard all the gunfire and a lot of yelling, you know, out of confusion, but then it shortly turned to screams. I heard a lot of people calling other people’s names,” she said.

During a pause in the shooting, she tried to crawl to safety, but froze when the shots began again.

Finally the gunfire and the movie stopped, and the lights came on.

“Then I could see down the aisle I was in, and I wouldn’t have been able to get out anyway because there were bodies in it,” Gravelly said. She had to step over her friend’s corpse to leave.

The perpetrator of this crime is a monster, insane or not. Whatever happens to him, he cannot be a part of society ever again.

If found guilty at trial the jury will decide whether to apply the death penalty, which is a goddamned clusterfuck as it is in Colorado. We’re the most wishy-washy fuckin’ state in the union IMO in re: the death penalty. Three guys are on death row right now (one guy for 22 years) and the litigation for those guys has cost taxpayers millions over the years. We’ve executed exactly one prisoner since the Supreme Court declared the death penalty constitutional in 1977. Gov. John Hickenlooper gave one of the death row inmates (the 22-year-long inmate) an indefinite reprieve right before an election he was running in. He was re-elected and has sole authority to grant any death row inmate a commutation to life in prison, which no governor of Colorado has ever done.

All four of the death row inmates I’ve described above, and the Aurora theater shooter in the midst of a death row trial, these are all very bad actors, unsavory characters who killed people in cold blood. That fact is not in dispute. But the application of their sentence? It’s bullshit.

*rant off, sorry for such a long comment*
