Criminal Charges Filed Against 6 Baltimore Cops in Death of Freddie Gray

One officer charged with murder, 5 others charged with assault and manslaughter
US News • Views: 31,779

Huge news from Baltimore today, where the state’s attorney has announced criminal charges against six police officers in connection with the killing of Freddie Gray.

A Baltimore prosecutor announced criminal charges on Friday against six police officers in the arrest of Freddie Gray, whose death after suffering a spinal cord injury in police custody touched off riots.

One officer, the driver of the van that carted Gray away after his arrest, was charged with a count known as second-degree depraved heart murder. Other charges against the six officers included manslaughter, assault and misconduct. Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said five of the six officers are in custody.

Marilyn Mosby, the state’s attorney for Baltimore, said that Gray’s arrest on April 12 was illegal and had been ruled a homicide.

She said officers failed to get medical help for him even though he repeatedly asked for it. She also said a switchblade that officers accused Gray of carrying illegally was a legal pocket knife.

It won’t bring Gray back, but if this puts cops on notice that they can’t mistreat young black men with impunity, it’s potentially huge.

And hopefully the notice will be taken nationwide. Because this is not localized anywhere…it’s everywhere.

3 Targetpractice  May 1, 2015 10:40:07am

And, of course, the wingnuts who as recently as yesterday were openly speculating about how the Gray family and the “thugs” on the street would react to the cops being exonerated are now tearing into Mrs. Mosby and suggesting that the cops are being railroaded, that this is a “war on cops,” and that her husband being on the city council means there’s political motivations to charging these cops.

I can only imagine that Fox’s nightly shows are gonna be chock full o’ nuts.

So now we just bypass the normal justice chain and go straight to trial? Obviously the Mayor and the White House have been talking and she is taking orders from the top.

The Palestinians are indeed part of a larger group of Arabs as well, but they are also a distinct people, forged from their shared experiences first as Ottoman subjects, then in the British Mandate, then under Egyptian and Jordanian occupation, and lastly under Israeli occupation.

As a people, the Palestinians deserve self-determination in a state of their own, alongside and at peace with Israel, where Jews deserve self-determination and protection in a state of their own. Ideally both of these states would be ethnic homelands with full minority rights, like many states in the old world such as Greece.

His criminal record was 3 inches think and we’re expected to believe he will be missed?? NO WAY. Blacks are totally of of control today and need to understand they will be watched, locked up and arrested more frequently now and Officers will do everything in their power to clean the streets of this trash.

How is her conflict of interest greater than McCulloch’s? I mean McCulloch was quoted as saying he sees his prosecutor’s office as another arm of law enforcement and had a father who not only was a police officer but killed in the line of duty. The problem wasn’t to me that the older McCulloch’s father was a cop- it’s that his father was killed in the line of duty and that he has a buddy relationship with them. Didn’t say anyone complaining about that on TCOT. But I get it. Marilyn Mosby is a young black woman so of course it’s a conflict of interest.

Baltimore is a majority Black city so if the right jury is picked, the cops will most likely be found guilty. I really don’t care what the wingnuts have to say about this. Justice needs to be served and a clear message has to be sent to the police that there is no open season on Blacks any more. At the very least, these cops should be fired for violating proper procedures which could have prevented Mr. Gray’s death.

Haven’t some of those bad apples been on the force for awhile?

Usually when you let fruit rot for an extended period in the bin, all the fruit ends up spoiled.

At that point, you need to toss all the fruit out, clean up the bin and then restock. And then keep an eye on it so you can easily identify when one apple starts to go bad.

How Western media would cover Baltimore if it happened elsewhere

International analysts predict the seeds of a so-called “American Spring,” fomented by technology. “It’s amazing what social media is doing for the cause of justice in America,” said a political rights analyst based in Geneva. “The black youth of America are showing what 21st-century civil rights activism looks like, using technology, social media and a decentralized organizing strategy to hold authorities accountable and agitate for change. These kids represent what modern-day freedom fighting looks like. The revolution will be tweeted, Periscope-d and Snapchatted.”

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on bridge scandal charges: ‘Today’s charges make clear that what I’ve said from day 1 is true. I had no knowledge or involvement in the planning or execution of this act’ - @GovChristie

Just because you say it doesn’t make it true.

Hmmm. Are these weasel words?

No knowledge or involvement in the planning.

So he had nothing to do with planning and carrying out the bridge blocking after he told them what to do.

I don’t deny any of what you’re saying.

I just go way back with Kasich (friends who went to college with him; he used to be my rep; friends’ parents who used to host all kinds of events for him), and hold him in extremely low regard. He is a snake and an obnoxious one at that.

As a long-time Columbus resident, I know all of what you are talking about.

Do happen to remember the talk about him back in the late 70s when he was (I believe) a state rep and getting ready to run for congress? There was much speculation he was gay and he lived with his campaign manager/main aid. He danced around that for the longest time.

I remember a woman that worked the Jerry Hammond for (Columbus) Mayor campaign who said he was big buds with all the ‘guys’ at The Limited. I don’t care, but you’d think he would at least be a bit more sensitive to LGBT issues and not play the God-fearing Christian.

Insufficient evidence … so far.

With two more indictments, and a guilty plea in hand, Christie’s facing at least two more people who might turn evidence on him to reduce their own sentences. And the federal prosecutor isn’t going to lay down all his cards here without all the ducks in a row. He knows he’s going to get more evidence of wrongdoing.

But you know what I find cute? That Gov. Cuomo thinks that Christie’s in the clear. I can’t tell if that’s comity or comedy.

Both have done more than their share of screwing up the Port Authority (which wasn’t in great shape before either of them took office, but it’s fallen into even worse shape since then - and really since before 9/11).

Former GOP lawmaker blisters Abbott for ‘pandering to idiots’ over military exercises

In his letter to the governor, Todd Smith of Euless, who retired from public office in 2013, said he is “horrified that I have to choose between the possibility that my Governor actually believes this stuff and the possibility that my Governor doesn’t have the backbone to stand up to those who do.”

He said he wrote because the thought that the U.S. military would be a threat to Texas is “embarrassing” and it is important “to rational governance that thinking Republicans call you out on it.”

“Is there ANYBODY who is going to stand up to this radical nonsense that is a cancer on our State and our Party?” Smith asked.

Smith is an attorney practicing in Euless and said in an interview that he was so disturbed by Abbott’s response that he laid in bed frustrated and unable to sleep.

He woke up this morning and decided to write Abbott the letter, which he also sent copies to the state House and Senate.

Rush to judgment? Oh you mean like arresting Freddie who didn’t even commit a crime? Tough shit. It’s an indictment. I’m tired of police unions acting like cops shouldn’t be subject to the same laws that the rest of us are because they’re cops. Being a cop doesn’t give you carte blanche to violate the law and people’s rights.

re: #296 #FergusonFireside

oh lawd, they did nothing wrong.

It’s unfortunate that they either have no one with the sense to understand that taking this stance is putting the entire department and every officer at increased risk or they do and are ignoring the advice. Continuing to argue that the officers involved did nothing wrong when it’s so clear that they did very wrong shit that directly caused the death of a wrongfully arrested man just makes them look stupid and immoral. Then to threaten the DA and her spouse in their letter… jumpin’ jesus these guys are morons.

One of those guys was lawyer for Lt Brian Rice.

One officer (the driver charged the most, Caesar Goodson), 45; Lt is 41; one is 30, the other 3 are 20s.

I really hope that, between now and when the trial(s) begin, the FOP comes up with a better defense than “They didn’t do anything wrong.”

My hope is they STFU until the trial is over.

Do not remember that. Friends knew/were related to the girls he dated in college (actually, one of my friends dated him for a very brief time) and just said he was mean, cheap and an asshole. Don’t recall the gay rumors.

Another friend’s parents were big buddies with him and when he was first running for Congress, he was at their house a lot—insufferable, if I remember correctly.

re: #249 Backwoods_Sleuth

I read something earlier today that CPS is investigating Toya Graham.
That’s probably CCJ’s big scoop of poop.

The point is that she is a totally ancillary part of the story—thrust into the 15-minutes-of-fame spotlight accidentally, so what does the little turd think he’s going to accomplish with whatever bullshit he intends to spout?

Toya Graham is a walk-on extra in this drama, and, to continue the Hollywood analogy, would be be listed as “uncredited mother” in the movie’s credits.

Yeah, upchuck, go after her (or better yet, get somebody on Twitter to do it for you, you lazy asshole)—now THAT’S journalism.

All 6 cops now in custody. Per CNN.

Good.

On the issue of conflict of interest, there is no conflict of interest. Even if she had an anti cop bias, which is ridiculous because she comes from a cop family, so what? She is the prosecutor, prosecutors are always adversarial to defendants. Should she recuse herself from drug gang prosecutions because she has an anti drug gang bias? The prosecutor tries to prosecute crimes, the defense attorney is biased in favor of the defendant and the Judge is supposed to be neutral. What the hell is everyone talking about? It is merely desperate bullshit.

T-shirt printing company just sent me a “Tell us how we are doing” email. I told them.

Then a page almost demanding that I post my review on facebook came-up.

HA!

One head of the hydra really doesn’t know what the other ones, or the body, are doing, do they?

I’m glad she found probable cause herself, fuck the grand jury system. It’s optional and rife with problems.

What’s next:
Monday there will likely be a bond hearing and a date will be set for a probable cause hearing. I think there is more than enough evidence for a Judge to find probable cause. Usually then comes an offer and a plea deal but this fucker I’m sure is going to trial.
