Friday Night Jam: Laura Marling, “Sophia”

Where I’ve been lately is no concern of yours

I can’t believe I never discovered Laura Marling’s music before this week, but now I can’t stop listening to her. This amazing song builds up from a solo acoustic guitar performance to a powerful full band with strings. Marling plays with the structures of her songs in a way that’s reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, but with her own appealing character. Just great stuff.

This is from the album titled: A Creature I Don’t Know.

Sending good vibes BB King’s way!

A guy had a t-shirt with Murphy’s laws of combat. Some that I can remember

Incoming fire has the right of way

If the enemy is in range, so are you

The enemy also has a plan

If you’re not sure, the Claymore is pointed at you.

If you have the enemy on the run, it’s an ambush

Try not to look important. Maybe the enemy’s low on ammo too.

Yes, BB King is getting up there. We’re all gonna get there sooner or later. He’s left a legacy of music that will live forever, and inspired many people, myself among them.

Got to see B.B. at a small venue with good acoustics a couple of years ago. While his stamina was obviously limited and the show less than a hour, it was money well spent. He made some great music.

Damn.

If this is his final curtain call, he’s done pretty good considering he’s been a diabetic for a couple of decades.

Though that isn’t entirely true. My sister does procurement for the US government. One of the companies she kept having to deal with kept bidding so low that no one took them seriously. Though, because the put in a low bid, they would get compensated for being passed over. So, one day, my sister called them on it, and gave the bid to them. The came back later and said they couldn’t do it.

My little factory would do a job making propellent rollers for the Navy. We made them since the 60s but during the 2000s we couldn’t get the contract for the new ones, even though we had the mold. Short story long, some guy in Bucks county would get the job, send them to the Navy and the Navy would immediately send them to us for repair (in their original packaging). The other guys’ rollers only lasted a shift and ours lasted weeks (All we did was use the rubber formula on the drawing!). It wound up costing the Navy double for the rollers because we always got beat on the new equipment bid but they didn’t have to bid out the repair.
It didn’t help that the Navy guys got cycled through the department too quickly to build up institutional memory.

I’ve been reading a column and listening to the audio at a West Virginia PBS station.

wvpublic.org

I’m finding the equivocation of the host to be rather silly. In some cases he’s recounting past acts of terrorism (by Christians no less) but of course doesn’t want to condemn them.

And if only we listened to the book banners… kumbaya and all.

Just not digging it.

However there is some good audio there, of interviews with the hard right reactionaries.

I don’t do Facebook much but my experience has been overall very positive. I have learned “where are they now” about 1960s High School buds in Chicago that would have never happened otherwise. It’s enabled me to reconnect a bit with a few old study buddies from Bradley U, circa 1971-1974. It has pleased me to see that most of my social acquaintances here in Texas are as liberal as I - something we all have generally learned not to discuss in most social settings in person cuz it’s, yanno, Texas. LOL

Facebook has given me a line to cousins/family with whom I wouldn’t otherwise be in touch with at all and reignited a few relationships that were once very close but fell into distance because life happens. Likewise it has also shown me that the distance that has grown between me and others who were once inseparably close is now too vast to ever cross and that’s sad but okay.

Indeed they do. Back in the late ‘80’s, when we lived up the road a piece in Chinatown here in NYC, our best friend was visiting and one drunken night noticed we had a defunct tv stashed in the corner of our railroad tenement flat and he suggested we throw it off the roof. Being mature adults, naturally we agreed and it was wicked cool. The sound also seemed inverted.

Evening, Lizards!

So, just so I’ve both this right, the people that arrested a young black man for possessing a perfectly legal knife, hand and leg cuffed him, threw him into the back of a paddy wagon unsecured, and occasionally stopped to beat the fuck out of him, which caused him to die, are now being defended by the Baltimore City Police Union as being being victims of “an egregious rush to justice”?

How about their actions being “an egregious rush to cowboy justice”?

Really, officers, why not just throw a rope over a tree branch and hang the little horse thief?

You fucking fucks fucked up and got caught.

Will they be convicted? My cynical side says “Not a chance”.

My dad was a TV repair guy way back when. His preferred technique of shattering the CRT for disposal was:

1. Put it face down inside a cardboard box large enough to have the neck sticking up an inch or so.
2. Take a long broom handle.
3. Hunker down so your eyes are below the level of the top of the box.
4. Whack the neck with the broom handle until the seal is broken or the neck breaks.

I watched him do this from a safe distance once as a kid. That big old 27” tube made one hell of a noise when it imploded. CORRECTION: Now that I think about it, the tube did not shatter impressively, though the sound of the air rushing into the busted neck was pretty loud and sudden. The point of this method was to limit the chances of implosion.

The real danger is the recoil of the glass pieces after the implosion. Plus the insides were coated with lead and the screen with phosphors, none too healthy to breath in.

When I was a kid we dropped one off at the landfill, and being an asshole kid I had a plan. I saw a very large rock and waited until everyone was back at the car and then bowled it at the screen, thump, thump, thump *BOOM*

Pretty much the total opposite of your Dad’s preferred method.

The old black-and-white ones you could just reach in with a pair of needlenose and break the little glass teat in the middle of the pins that they originally drew the vacuum through. You’d hear the air whistle in but it was perfectly safe.

The three-gun color tubes had a much wider neck and a plastic cover over the whole end, so it made it more difficult. The later one-gun inline tubes I don’t know about.

I’ve seen BB many times over the years, and the best was a late show on a Saturday night in San Carlos in the Bay Area at the Circle Star Theater, with its famous revolving stage. The opening act was the incredible Millie Jackson, who shocked the older folks with her raunchy funkafications, followed by the one and only Bobby “Blue” Bland, who blew the roof off the joint. BB slayed as usual, and when the clock turned to midnight, his bass player announced that it was BB’s birthday, and I stood up and shouted, “It’s my birthday too!” and my wife nudged me to sit down and BB caught that and cracked up. Everybody sang “Happy Birthday” and had a rockin’ good time.

I should add that the ticket price was $6. For three fantastic acts with a big band!

This was back in the ’60s, and the tube I am pretty sure was a three-gun color CRT.

CRTs are going the way of the buggy whip, so that particular danger of implosion and shattered glass everywhere will fade into history. The newer flat screens (LED, LCD, etc) have a different environmental hazard. I might have read somewhere that at least one company has proposed reclaiming the rare earth metals from them for reuse, but the cost of reclamation now is far above the market price of indium and the other metals. Most of those metals right now come from China.

Speaking of which, on Monday our class trip visited a manganese processing plant near here. There were sacks of manganese “briquettes” everywhere. The plant takes manganese extracted in a neighboring county, grinds it into a powder, and compresses the powder into briquette-sized pieces for transport.

Mn briquettes — Guaranteed not to burn

The place smelled strongly of powdered metal. The workers did not wear masks, and the paper masks we were given were ineffective. Fortunately, we didn’t stay in that part of the plant very long.

Yeah, they don’t seem to be going to any pains to recycle the neodymium from the magnetrons in microwave ovens, either. The “rare-earth” elements aren’t particularly rare—it’s just hard to separate them from each other, since they have the same number of electrons in their outermost shells.

People seem to be surprised that in a neodymium-iron-boron magnet, far and away the rarest element is boron. (And in samarium-cobalt it’s the cobalt.)

Thanks for the info EC, that’s good to hear. My mother was in hospice care off and on for a couple of years before she passed away.

Btw, I love that phrase, “passed away,” though I have no idea what it means. It just sounds so soothing, like “she passed way and went over yonder to a relaxing bubble bath.” After all the shit my mom went through, she earned an eternal bubble bath.

98 RealityBasedSteve  May 1, 2015 10:28:07pm

Oh, a few other things about the trunkfish or boxfish. They have a hard bony plates that give them their shape, that’s part of their defense, and also why they can’t swim well. They also emit a toxin into the water and are toxic if eaten. So you can be slow and rigid, as long as others find you toxic. (sound like anybody we know?)

But then after the show, BB was out in the crowd signing autographs and handing out guitar picks with his name on them (which I have since lost).

Then it dawned on me why they did not want knives in the venue: all we need is one delusional whacko guitarist out there who believes himself to be the second best blues guitarist in the world, and all he needs to do is take BB out of circulation, etc…

Evidently things got pretty hinky in Seattle and Oakland, but cops arrested 50 in #Baltimore last night, I assume mostly for being “without papers”. AFAIK, and being reported, it was pretty peaceful. National Lawyers Guild was on the scene for people arrested, and DC law school dean deferred exams for those helping in B’more.

Baltimore police: 38 protest-related arrests and 15 curfew related arrests Friday - @cmcampbell6
see original on twitter.com

More anarchists and free-form damage on the West Coast and plenty of arrests there. The Black Bloc was in Seattle, of course.

I can understand the anger against used car dealers and banks in Oakland, though. And $3M paid out in police brutality cases each year.

I don’t see these protests over in the immediate future. So reminiscent of the ’60s but with modern communications, different, with the cloud of even more people affected by the wealth gap, stagnating wages or no jobs, student debt, etc. And the police haven’t really changed their tactics in the end—it’s all about trying to stifle lawful dissent, to silence the voices of those they oppress. This time, at its core, it’s about racism and money, about those at the lower end of the wealth gap who no longer can get ahead, or even stay in place, because of the greed of the 1%. It affects every corner of this country and it definitely will affect the coming electoral season.

It’s going to be a long, hot summer for many, so we should expect even more reaction from the RW.

Finances of the British Royal Family

en.wikipedia.org

The Queen is said to be worth about $500 million. She receives an annual salary of $12.9 million; Buckingham Palace is worth around $5M. But that’s not the end of it; all the royals in the lineage receive free money; even minors receive funding for their expenses. Although they’re not required to pay taxes, some do voluntarily.

At any rate, they’re fixed for life and beyond, unlike most ordinary Britons who also find it increasingly difficult to make a living.

She doesn’t own it and its the “official royal residence” in London with a state function although you’d think it more valuable, wouldn’t you? Filled w/major art pieces, etc and has 775 rooms. Basically, like most castles, it’s an historical bldg and probably requires a lot of upkeep.

The royal family does own Sandringham House on 20K acres. Balmoral Castle, another residence, is owned by a Trust but used as a private residence for the royals.

I don’t really know where that $5M number came from. It did seem really low. It’s really around $5 Billion.

I think the royals make money off their real estate and other investments. It’s not like they are dependent on their subsidies to eat, but probably need the subsidies to enjoy a suitably lavishly royal lifestyle.

While we in the States sneer at the anachronism of the Royal Family, we have no skin in this game. It’s up the Brits to decide what to do with them. The Windsors are (very) slowly catching up to the 21st century, but no one is going to part willingly with their lifestyle.

Unless he comes down with something and homeopaths himself to death….

And he’s doing quite well, in the quasi-privatization of the royal family

“When Britain’s Conservative-Liberal coalition government announced its austerity budget in the fall, there was a small clause that essentially privatizes the Royal Family and turns them into uncontrollable profiteers who are almost obligated to take a political role.

(snip)

“This was Prince Charles’s idea. As a future monarch, he doesn’t take money from the Civil List but has turned his own gift, a £650-million land package known as the Duchy of Cornwall, into a hugely profitable enterprise. His company’s high-end sausages, sauces and herbal “medical” products, produced on public land for which he pays nothing and by a company that’s exempt by charter from corporate tax, fill the supermarket shelves of England; and his investment and property-development portfolio has become a powerful force.

“Charles received £16.5-million from the Duchy in the year ended March 31, 2010, according to its annual report; the organization also pays his personal staff of 110 people, including his valets, his servants and his wife, as salaried employees. When he takes over the throne, he will inherit (without paying any inheritance tax) his mother’s estate, the Duchy of Lancaster, which paid the Queen rental incomes of £13.2-million last year. And, of course, he’ll be able to expand his business empire into the Crown Estate.” More

Marco Rubio (Yes! My favorite candidate has a chance!)

Rubio— single term Senator, no “executive experience”, birthers, and the added bonus of the base hating him because of immigration. He’s a less charismatic Obama with all the wrong policy positions.

Cruz — Toxic to everyone who isn’t a religious fanatic and mouth breather.

Walker — I would’ve said he was a threat, but his attempts to outcrazy Ted Cruz by coming out against LEGAL immigration will destroy him with the business conservatives who like legal immigration.

Paul — Just like his daddy, he gets the uninformed and naive interested because he babbles about freedom. Just like his daddy, he won’t make it out of the primaries.

Trump — LOL

Christie — Without Bridgegate he might have had a chance. Now he’s DOA.

The GOP has realized that they will not win the general election with another rich white guy.

Rubio’s trick will be winning the primary without being a rich white guy.

Rubio has a steep hill to climb. He was supposed to be The Great Latino Hope for the GOP, but his perceived capitulation on immigration ruined him with the RWNJs. They’re not going to vote for him. They’re all about Ted Cruz.

Well here is another well documented case of excessive force.

Man sues West Jordan police; K-9 cop attacked his face during tree-burning incident (with video)

His crime? Burning a Xmas tree in his backyard.

A West Jordan man is suing the city’s police department after one of its dogs chewed on his face — several seconds after he put up his hands in surrender, the complaint alleges.

Martin Lee Hoogveldt, 33, filed a federal civil rights lawsuit Wednesday against the department, and specifically one of its officers, Ian Adams, alleging illegal entry and excessive force.

Edited to fix link

Pleas note that the video from the body cam is very disturbing.

The long and short of the Sheriff’s bloviations to Cavuto is “This shouldn’t be going to trial because there’s nothing these cops did that was wrong!” He’s convinced that she doesn’t have the evidence for reasonable doubt, despite virtually nobody outside the BPD and the state’s attorney’s office actually seeing the whole of the evidence, and that she’s pursuing charges purely for politics, that these cops are “human sacrifices.”

Well, I would probably think they all have personality disorders, but that’s not a defense. Insanity is pretty hard to prove as a legal defense; even schizophrenia often doesn’t qualify, as we’ve seen. It’s a pretty high bar to overcome for a defendant.

criminal.findlaw.com

Also, even the mental status of victims of police shootings and brutality don’t seem to get much consideration, as we’ve seen. All “perps” are treated as aggressive threats to them, not as people needing emergency services.

I think once a cop has established the kind of mental instability Rice did 3 yrs ago, they should be either put on desk duty or pursue some other avenue of employment. They shouldn’t ever be allowed to carry a gun again.

That’s kinda of where I’m at. We’ve essentially had a Bush or Clinton running either running the country since 1989 (1981 if you count Sr’s VP post). We’re in a POTUS rut.

After all the catastrophic political news since…well, 1980…I think we had a real stroke of luck this time. If Obama hadn’t come on the scene because of the Ryan/Seven-of-Nine débacle, and Hillary Clinton had been elected in 2008, another Democrat (whoever they might have been) could easily lose in 2016.

The way it is now, we have a real chance of a Democratic White House for 16 years in a row, which hasn’t happened since Roosevelt/Truman. There could be a serious demographic shift in that time—particularly, the typical Fox viewers are going to start dying in droves before 2024. (Well, so will I, probably.)

Issue over party still gives the advantage to the Dems, at least here in Texas.

Our asshole governor just caved to the Alex Jones loons and the paranoid fuckwits who think Obama is going to use Jade Helm to declare martial law and take over America, declaring himself King For Life. He’s sending the Texas State Guard (read: camo wearing civilians who are typically used as volunteer support during a hurricane or other disasters) to “monitor” the US Army. That alone is reason enough to vote for Hillary, because the state GOP is clearly stuck on stupid if the governor thinks that was a good idea.

Hell, I saw a small miracle two years ago, when all three of the top spots (Gov, Lt. Gov, & AG) went to Democrats despite the full-court press to make the election about Obamacare and about how McAuliffe was little more than a catspaw for the White House.

That said, I’m not overly thrilled with Hillary being the heir apparent, because I know that there are young Democrats out there that have broad appeal. I’d love to see a Corey Booker, Julian Castro, or (yes) an Elizabeth Warren out there on the campaign trail, showing that there is young blood in the party’s veins. But I’m also pragmatic about these things, and when you’ve got a candidate who is ahead of any potential GOP challengers, whose poll numbers are holding steady despite “scandals,” it’s hard to argue that I should consider abandoning her simply because her proposals don’t exactly match up with my views.

Not really. In fact, VPs have often been more handicapped by being part of a sitting administration than helped, mostly because they’re basically hitched to the rise and fall of their boss’ legacy. I think he would have won handily if he hadn’t tried to run away from that. With the special case of Gore, the only VP who’s run (without serving as president first) and lost was Hubert Humphrey. I get the impression that people think Truman and Johnson don’t count because they were already in office, but they did win reelection. They could have lost, like Ford did.

And let’s face it—Hillary’s getting up there. By 2024, her VP might very well be serving as president.

re: #305 Lidane

Nixon was Eisenhower’s VP. It just took him a while to win the Presidency.

Also took Humphrey showing a level of political decency that campaign did before or since, avoiding making public that Nixon was deliberately working to sink the Paris Peace Talks by offering South Vietnam better terms once he won in November. It went so far that Johnson had wiretaps on Nixon and so had the evidence to support such charges if Humphrey had made it public knowledge.

How often does the VP become the next prez?

almost 1/4 of our presidents have died in office; that needs to be a consideration when voting for someone who’ll be 70 the year she’s inaugurated.

For VP’s who didn’t ascend that way… Nixon (with an 8-year gap) and GHWB in my lifetime, and Gore won the popular vote.

I saw Gore in person in Charlotte. I liked what he had to say, but he came off as very yawn-worthy, not quite able to shed the “professorial” persona. Little charisma and definitely not Mr. Excitement, as too many would like, regardless of party. Clinton was definitely a hard act for Gore to follow.

That’s kinda of where I’m at. We’ve essentially had a Bush or Clinton running either running the country since 1989 (1981 if you count Sr’s VP post). We’re in a POTUS rut.

When you look at where the parties’ mindsets are, however, it’s a no-brainer. One appears to be sane. The other is foaming at the mouth, waving a Bible in one hand and a gun in the other, screaming how God will destroy us for allowing gay marriage.

Maybe Hillary should run as a Rodham. I really don’t get the dynastic argument against her.

Of course you remember how the Republicans joked about Hillary being the “real president” in Bill’s administration? A lot of the more regressive types on our side will probably think of Bill as being the “real president” when she’s elected. But they’d be OK with that, because they remember the Clinton years fondly.

322 Targetpractice  May 2, 2015 10:15:20am

What’s with this “dynasty” business? Not only is it as something as old as presidential elections, with the Adams father-son duo, it also rather falls apart when you consider that Bush Sr. and Dubya couldn’t have been more different. Plus, there’s plenty of positive connotations to the connection of Hillary to Bill, considering all the effort the GOP put into portraying her as the real power behind the throne.

Elizabeth Warren doesn’t even want to run for president. She knows that her time is best spent outside of that circus. People who keep bringing up her name as a presidential hopeful are just dreaming about their bestest ever imaginary candidate. That said, she’s a GREAT senator.

it’s a wooden bear

Are there any internet traditions that I should know about wooden bears? I don’t have a clue…

re: #384 Bubblehead II

What’s it looking at?

It’s looking across a railroad trestle and down towards the Mississippi River.

Century link is starting to piss me off. 4th time in a week.

That’s not Century Link. I got that from, supposedly, my carrier and if you take the survey (which seems real, with real questions that make sense), you’re taken to a page for your free reward of bullshit anti-aging pills or what have you. At the bottom of THAT page in tiny letters it tells you they’re completely unaffiliated.

I called my carrier and they said there’s nothing they can do about it and it’s definitely not them doing or sponsoring it.
