Besides, prize fighting would just be a huge step down for a good professional race horse. Well actually it would be a step down for the old ass that can’t carry any weight or a plow anymore. Some would rather be glue. Prize fighting may exist just to make the NFL look good.

The El Dorado is technically longer, but this specific year, GM downsized its fleet, leaving the ‘79 Continental as the longest full-size sedan in production at that time.

As I called it to another friend of mine, a “100% genuine Detroit land boat.” It’s in solid shape for having sat for 16 years; when we towed it down the hill into the driveway, I was locking up the tires with the brakes - with no power boost. I put new engine oil in it and am working on getting the ignition and fuel systems replaced/cleaned so that we can try to drive it back here to the fishbowl.

It’s been cleaned up a little bit in this picture, but it’s in good shape, with only a very small amount of body rust and the typical surface rust on the frame. The tires are new; after 16 years, the old ones were completely cracked and dry-rotted.

The thought occurred to me that I mentioned a “profitable” murder-for-hire enterprise. It wouldn’t be very profitable if we used the Continental; while its spacious trunk would allow us a pretty good corpse-to-car ratio, unfortunately the miles-to-gallon ratio is probably going to reduce the profit margins considerably.

What?!? Pacquaio is a much better person than “Money” Mayweather is, IMO:

Beyond boxing, Pacquiao has participated in basketball, business, acting, music recording and politics. In May 2010, Pacquiao was elected to the House of Representatives in the 15th Congress of the Philippines, representing the province of Sarangani. He was re-elected in 2013 to the 16th Congress of the Philippines.[16]

Pacquiao, while mostly focused on being a boxer and a congressman, is listed as the head coach of the basketball team Kia Sorento. He was also drafted onto the team as 11th overall pick in the first round of the 2014 PBA draft, making him the oldest rookie drafted,[17] as well as the shortest player and the first dual-sport athlete in the Philippine Basketball Association.[18] He played 7 minutes of one of the team’s games. Pacquiao also owns a team in the PBA Developmental League (PBA D-League), the MP Hotel Warriors.

The Paquiao-Leviticus thing is bunk, by the way.

On Wednesday, Granville Ampong wrote a follow-up post on the matter, saying of the Leviticus quote, “Pacquiao never said nor recited, nor invoked and nor did he ever refer to such context.” And Pacquiao likewise issued a statement, saying, “I didn’t say that, that’s a lie… I didn’t know that quote from Leviticus because I haven’t read the Book of Leviticus yet,” and adding, “I’m not against gay people … I have a relative who is also gay. We can’t help it if they were born that way. What I’m critical off are actions that violate the word of God. I only gave out my opinion that same-sex marriage is against the law of God.”

Manny may be a bit old-fashioned (and not necessarily in a way we’d like), but the truth should not be a casualty.

re: #67 Great White Snark

Remember when some tried to blame US gun dealers/makers for that weaponry? The question “where is the RPG store?” seemed to slip away without much notice.

Well, many of the parts for those cartel-made AR-15s did come from the US. The cartel most often makes the lower receiver (also just called a ‘lower’), which is the part the ATF considers to be the controlled component of a rifle. Things like barrels, trigger groups, and bold carriers are fairly easy to buy here in the US. The bolt carrier is in many ways the real heart of the AR-15 design, and its harder than the lower receiver to build because it can only be built out of high-quality steel.

So those cartel rifles have underground made lowers and pistol grips, but the great majority of the bolt carriers are being smuggled in from El Norte.

re: #67 Great White Snark

Remember when some tried to blame US gun dealers/makers for that weaponry? The question “where is the RPG store?” seemed to slip away without much notice.

You’re being hyper literal. Yes they have Russian made RPG’s, but Mexican gangs also have US made LAW rockets.

They were armed to the teeth. Their arsenal ranged from semi-automatic rifles to rocket-propelled grenades. When the smoke finally cleared and the government had prevailed, Mexican federal agents captured 540 assault rifles, more than 500,000 rounds of ammunition, 150 grenades, 14 cartridges of dynamite, 98 fragmentation grenades, 67 bulletproof vests, seven Barrett .50-caliber sniper rifles and a Light Anti Tank (LAW) rocket.

And the US does hold a lot of blame for the weapons that fuel the drug gange. We gave hundreds of thousands of grenades to Central American Governments under Reagan and Bush, and far too many of them are now on the black market.

The majority of grenades have been traced back to El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, according to investigations by agents at the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and their Mexican counterparts. ATF has also found that almost 90 percent of the grenades confiscated and traced in Mexico are more than 20 years old.

The administrations of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush sent 300,000 hand grenades to friendly regimes in Central America to fight leftist insurgents in the civil wars of the 1980s and early 1990s, according to declassified military data obtained through the Freedom of Information Act by the Federation of American Scientists.

Not all grenades found in Mexico are American-made. Many are of Asian or Soviet and Eastern European manufacture, ATF officials said, probably given to leftist insurgents by Cuba and Nicaragua’s Sandinistas.

One of the most common hand grenades found in Mexico is the M67, the workhorse explosive manufactured in the United States for American soldiers and for sale or transfer to foreign militaries. Some 266,000 M67 grenades went to El Salvador alone between 1980 and 1993, during the civil war there.

I dunno. After those Africans and Bangladeshis drown in the holds of that smuggler boat in late April, Italy once again put out the idea of sending peace keepers to Misrata. Lt. Gen. Haftir, head of the Libyan National Army, wasted no time in pouring cold water on that stupid idea. Europe still does not get that the Misrata militia is dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood. As such it cannot be won over into a peace deal, because many of its members and most of its leaders see themselves as being on a Mission From God. It has to be destroyed as a fighting entity.

Overstatement is overstatement as in the RPG’s. The US, Russia China and others send weapons all over the world and they wind up in the wrong hands. Criminals will often outwit the law like criminals do. It’s their job, some are adept at it. Connecting your perception of gun culture to the weapons down south strikes me as terribly distant.

Associating me with the most egregious facets of gun culture is the same kind of baloney as your comment about Pacquio. And worth about as much attention. Your religious bigotry as shown there in number #75 is offensive especially from a fellow man of faith. Back up a bit young man, you got too much wrong. My culture is not guns. I have guns for a reasonable purpose and with reasonable cause. Like it or not. My culture is quite apart from your perception.

Connecting your perception of gun culture to the weapons down south strikes me as terribly distant.

To be fair US Gun culture is the reason there’s still a private party transfer loophole in place in most states. That alone facilitates the funneling of countless assault, sniper, and anti material rifles down south. Resistance to closing that is massive.

In other gun news I picked up the Browning Twelvette today. Aluminum receiver, two shot semi auto 12 gauge, it already feels like the best upland game gun I’ve ever held. Shoulders, balances and points as well or better than my Fox and LC Smith doubles, and noticeably lighter than either. It’s a shame that design never caught on.

You’re voting SNP*, I take it?

I’m not going to go after you regarding the Tories. You and Isee the UK Conservative Party in very different ways and we’re not going to agree about it. I will, however, say that I think that I think the SNP is effectively planning to win seats that will then effectively boycott real governance. I also think that Westminster devolving some real powers on the Scottish Parliament is the best way to defang the SNP. The SNP’s popularity will fall once it is forced to actually govern and take ownership of unpopular policies.

Note for those not following the UK elections: SNP = Scottish National Party.

How much of a hit did the SNP take when the independence referendum failed?

Not as much as you’d think. It’s poised to pound the Labor Party in Scotland.

98 Aye Pod  May 2, 2015 6:47:57pm

Hi DF. Yes I’ll be voting SNP. The SNP are looking for almost a clean sweep in Scotland this week. Labour are paying the price up here for completely failing to oppose the tories austerity narrative and accepting their framing of almost every issue. They could have done what the SNP have done - stuck to their principles and energised the young and disaffected, but instead chose to chase after the shiny tory voters.

Not to mention that the ‘vow’ made by the Westminster leaders including Labour’s Ed Milliband before the referendum vote to give more power to Scotland was of course a complete lie. Labour have said they will refuse to allow the SNP into government as part of a coalition, even if that is the only way to stop the tories governing for another five years. The Westminster parties speak about us almost as though we were terrorists. All the talk is of the desperate need to deny the Scots representation unless they vote for one of the main Westminster parties. It’s an absolute disgrace.

Whatever happens next, it’s looking increasingly certain that the union’s days are numbered. I’m looking forward to thursday night - especially after the disappointment of the referendum - it’s going to be quite a ride, with a great result for SNP voters like myself but there will be an extremely messy outcome, with weeks of dirty dealing before a new government is in place.

I had never heard of that gun. D_L used to work at a shotgun range called Oak Tree who sold lots of shotguns, some for epic$$. She filled me in a bit. But two shot? Huh. Quite an oddity. Looks sweet to shoot. I like shooting clays, it’s more intuitive than my usual run and gun on the clock.

It’s pretty clear that the Unionist parties made a major mistake by trumpeting devolution to win the independence referendum and then essentially going back on their word after making only token efforts to keep it. That’s the sort of dishonest politics that some people remember come the next election. Which is also a lesson that the candidates for US President (of both parties) should take to heart as well.

None whatsoever as it turns out! Quite the reverse - it is not only possible but quite probable that the SNP will win every Scottish seat in Scotland on thursday. The SNP also has a new leader - Nicola Sturgeon. After her performance in the TV debates, a lot of English people were searching online to find out if there was any way they could vote for her. Looks sweet to shoot.

Browning’s advertising at the time said something like “don’t think of it as only holding two shells, think of it as never empty.” Because it has an automatic hold open and the lifting gate mechanism chambers the first shot shell immediately as you load it. Because of that guys who practiced with it could reportedly get three aimed shells off faster than those using pump action shotguns.

I just like it because it’s kind of a rare oddity and seems so logically thought out. If you’re used to a double barreled break action it just makes sense.

I boxed a bit in High School and afterwards. Standard amateur rules, headgear, larger gloves, a jab that just makes contact is a point, same for a powerful body blow. If you were fast, you could win a lot of fights by outpointing your opponent. If you hit hard, you could win a lot of fights, since your opponent wouldn’t want to come in at you.

If you weren’t fast OR a heavy hitter, then everybody wanted a match against you. Let’s just say that I was an opponent that was always in demand. :)

I’m not sure if CCJ is angry because he thinks journalists who are sympathetic to the protesters in Baltimore are being hypocritical living in “nice” neighborhoods, or because those mostly AA journalists are living in mostly white neighborhoods.

He made a big thing about Louisville Judge Olu Stevens living in a McMansion in mostly white Prospect, with the sly implication that Stevens might have done something illegal to afford such a home. Stevens has been a lawyer for years, and his wife is a radiologist, so in real life — not UpChuck’s fevered imagination — they probably bought the house with their own money.

Their first album was recorded in one day so they needed to use some songs that they’d been playing for years and could perform flawlessly in their sleep. That said, they were recording a lot of covers because they liked the songs so much. George had a real flair for playing Chet Atkins style country licks, and Paul sang the hell out of Little Richard covers.

Beatles For Sale had a lot of covers because they were so exhausted and pinched for time, but from then on they were writing everything.

Since I’ve viewed some of the softball interviews (or more accurately, job applications) from the NR “summit” I thought I might try the one with Carly Fiorina being interviewed by John Fund.

I couldn’t make it a couple of minutes in. There was something so off putting that I couldn’t stand spending any more time.

Pretentious people with too much money, enough to buy the machinery to make them look intelligent when they are just lucky and ungracefully so - I just can’t stomach it.

My two cents is he’s retaliating for all those unhappy times at school: Chuck against the cruel world. Plus he’s really got a hardline attitude about “purity” and hypocrisy, given his attacks on conservatives’ sexual escapades. I’m sure there’s some fancy shmancy psychological term for his behavior.

I’ve read some of Revolution in the Head, and I recall the early albums were produced quickly under a lot of corporate pressure to capitalize on the band’s popularity. Their EMI recording studio was also relatively primitive. It wasn’t until the boys took over creative control that the situation changed.

It also helped when The Beatles made Parlophone a shitload of money. ;)

I was thinking about The Beatles in 1964 the other day. Capitol records wouldn’t touch their records until the beginning of 1964, and by the end of that year Capitol had released Meet The Beatles, The Beatles 2nd Album, Something New, The Beatles Story, and Beatles 65. Then there was the Hard Day’s Night soundtrack on United Artists and their first UK album (that Capitol rejected) on VeeJay records. Seven freakin’ albums in one year. The record companies were milking them for all they could get.

I agree that his school experiences seem to be part of his issue and feed his rage.

He does seem to be a malignant narcissist; his reactions to any criticism are consistent with that. I think many of his failures and broken relationships are a result of him attacking people for anything he perceives as a put down. He can’t tolerate any criticism. People who don’t acknowledge his greatness are enemies.

I appreciate the work Charles has done to shine a light on Upchuck’s words and deeds. It’s like cleaning the cat box; a shitty job but if you don’t do it the consequences can be worse than the job.

Well, so far he’s gotten Radley Balko’s address wrong TWICE. But, of course it was an “honest mistake and the fault of Lexus-Nexus” because the AWARD-WINNING JOURNALIST is never wrong.

And it misses the point of why publishing Balko’s address is at all necessary or ethical. Plus, it opens up the possibility that some of his knuckle-dragging followers will harass the current residents of those addresses.

It’s like when he was trying to stalk Charles and showed up at an old address. Later tried to claim he knew it wasn’t the current address so he wasn’t stalking. Don’t think he fooled anybody.

At least right now he’s flying around and so doesn’t have his gun. Hope his wife is smart enough to make it disappear while he’s gone.

Either he has spent some of his GoFundMe money on his own access, or he’s got some loyal follower who has access doing the legwork for him. Either way, I think using LN for the purpose of publicizing someone’s home address violates their TOS.

Oh, his whole premise that you can’t be for social justice if you don’t live in poverty is completely bogus, for sure. (And that HE is righteously charged with exposing those he finds wanting in sanctity.)

I was just pointing out that his cracker-jack research is so pitiful that he usually comes up with the wrong address, or the wrong city, or the wrong person.

Good for you—can’t wait to hear their reply. (You might also point out that “someone” is maligning their reputation by claiming they provided him with incorrect information.)
