Very nice! Thanks Charles, I needed a little mellow tonight.

Love Mark Knopfler’s playing. He has such a distinctive style, I can always recognize his guitar work. And I’m quickly becoming a fan of Ruth Moody as well.

Only shame is we have one of the grandkids tonight, a toddler, who we just got to sleep. Otherwise I’d be checking this out on my good system instead of crappy laptop speakers. Ah well, it can wait until tomorrow.

Later, lizards. May you dream of guitars and pie.

Maybe I’m bound to wander
From one place to the next
Heaven knows why
But in the wild blue yonder
Your star is fixed in my sky

Just another bar at a crossroads
So far from home
But that’s alright
Whenever I’m going down a dark road
I don’t feel alone in the night

There’s a place in my heart
Though we’re far apart
May you always know
No matter how long since I saw you
I’ll keep a flame there for you
Wherever I go

They’re looking to close up in here
They’re pulling down the blinds
But they’ll let you stay awhile
They’re not going to mind

Now I’ve got to leave you, brother
So this round’s mine
Here’s looking at you, anyhow
You can go on and have another
They won’t call time
I’m going to say my goodbyes now

There’s a place in my heart
Though we’re far apart
May you always know
No matter how long since I saw you
I’ll keep a flame there for you
Wherever I go

That’s a pretty good song; I’ve always liked Knopfler, with his distinctive guitar playing and his smoky voice.

Here’s one of my favorite Dire Straits songs:

Knopfler and Emmylou Harris, If This is Goodbye

Love their voices together. Roadrunning is one of my favorite CDs.

Unless you prefer this one:

Knopfler is a finger picker, so no plastic picks with his right hand. There a few others, like Lindsey Buckingham, but most rockers like to use use hard picks. I like the sound of finger pickers on electric guitars. Really warm and intimate.

Love to, but when I click your name, I’m punched back to the home page. I’m a Luddite and don’t have an e-mail account on my Apple here at home. It is going to be a beautiful day tomorrow in South Austin. El Alma’s, at Dawson and Barton Springs Road, is where I wander down to the C-Store next to it around ten to pick up the Sunday Times.

If there is another place that is more comfortable to you, please advise.

GotNwes is catching up to the current news cycle.

BREAKING: Why do pro-#BaltimoreRiots pundits move house so much? #FreddieGray

Lots of pundits are supporting the riots on Twitter. And some even are sympathetic to the ones in Baltimore.

We wanted to get a sense of what these pundits do in their private lives, so we could figure out what we’re doing wrong.

What is their revealed preferences? Also, how babby is formed?

Are the voices of black America or the so-called Baltimore uprising living in majority black areas, y’know, the ‘Hood, the ghetto, the slums?

Nope.

I will note that CCJ has used the term “revealed preferences” before. It’s a term coined by Paul Samuelson, the economist, for judging consumer behavior. en.wikipedia.org

And CCJ is applying the concept incorrectly.

I can’t write like he does. It’s impossible. Maybe if I were really loaded I could reproduce his lack of grammar, syntax and logical organization, but even then 45+ years of writing for work and for school would get in the way.

Thank dog for that! I can’t either, and I’ve made my living as a writer for more than 40 years.

Even before he completely went off the rails, his writing was utter crap. Pretentious. Poorly constructed. Boring. Disorganized. Totally
egocentric, no matter what the subject.

And that’s not even touching on his total lack of basic grammatical skills.

You managed to capture some of the spirit of his current drunken bender but your training betrays you.

Needs more megalomania, bragging and less proper use of grammar and syntax. Also needs a couple of spelling errors.

Nice job though and I’m glad to know that attempts to parody CCJ don’t seem to have caused any lasting damage. ;)

I was looking at a Brian May interview (some website about players’ rigs) and he uses a coin. He does concede that he holds the coin lightly, but it’s still a frickin coin. He prefers coins made before 1952 (or so) because they’re a little bit softer. They showed his guitar (He uses the same one he made with his father when he was a teenager 95% of the time!) and it has all these metal filings in it that they have to clean every so often.

Someday that guitar will go to auction for charity, and it won’t be like So and So used this guitar when he recorded such and such. Brian May used that guitar for just about everything for decades, and since it’s handmade, it’s a one of a kind. Somebody made a replica in case he has a problem during a show, but it rarely gets used.

As part of the great opera revival (?) going on I noticed that in the season final episode of Daredevil that, in the penultimate climax scene, they used Nessun Dorma as the music. It was an abbreviated version. It struck me funnily, even though it was not totally out of place given the original context of the song.

More Puccini:

I suppose, but in the series as a whole the music wasn’t exactly of that style, so it stood out to me. On the whole I think the music for the series was not that impressive, but small screen productions rarely have great scores.

I agree. It was a real surprise. Maybe the intent was to heighten the drama and suggest a triumph, but with almost a half hour left to the episode it was easy to guess it would not be a total victory.

re: #46 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

As a series I think it is much better than the usual TV offerings, though I liked it less than many people it appears. Some of the acting is not so hot in my opinion. The strong point is the story arc, the Wilson Fisk character (and his entourage), and the mood set in the environment as a whole.

The show could have used a bit more attention ($) on the music, and the dialogue writing for both the lead and for the Page character came off to me as too shallow at times (unless it was intended to maker her a bit of a ditzy character.)

Charlie Cox may have been trying to portray a character whose emotions are under tight control, except when he puts on the mask and pummels the shit out of evildoers. Or he might just not have the emotional range that D’Onofrio has. And, for all the chatter about his womanizing, Murdock had no serious liaisons during the 13 eps.

Page as a character doesn’t seem too well thought out, or maybe they’re trying to paint her as conflicted, too. On one hand, she’s fearful and vulnerable. On the other, she’s willing to risk her life going after Fisk & Co. She’s not ditzy, though.

Have you watched Gotham? If so, what’s your take on it?

If the story line plays out according to the original material, there was a reason why Page was afraid no one would take her seriously if they investigated her. The character she was based on was a reformed junkie and prostitute with ties to a drug cartel who moved to New York to try and start over.

See, I’ve not followed the Daredevil comic, so I’m coming to this series a complete newb. I did pick up on Page being a newcomer to NYC and her reluctance to discuss her past or her family, though.

This is probably racism, but just to be sure: cops are very happy about pepper-spraying in general, incl. white people. This has been a huge topic here at LGF a while back, after the separate incidents at NYC Occupy and at UC Davis.

Yet Blacks in #Baltimore have to deal with this kind of treatment every. single. day. They don’t get warnings and offers of rides home, either.

I’m not blaming those white protestors who joined in with residents in those neighborhoods to protest; I’m just pointing out the difference in treatment. I’m sure those white protestors in #Baltimore saw the difference.

The only 3 neighborhoods on curfew in #Baltimore were Black. Elsewhere in the city, nothing.

I knew this suspect was probably white, from where he lives. Cornelius is a pretty affluent town just north of Charlotte on the lake. Median family income is over $83K/yr (2012) and it’s 92% white, also conservative.

Suspect is 16 yr old and was wearing bullet-proof vest when he shot the cop during a “domestic” dispute involving his sister with his mother and girlfriend also at the house.

That’s going to be the $64 question, but I’d bet as an adult. He shot a cop and it appears he was prepared to engage in a Bundy standoff, or somethin’ but was too impulsive with that gun. I suppose living with 2 females older than he is was just too much for this poor kid. ////

The Roots of Poverty Are Many and Deep

brookings.edu

And this is why, for so many yrs, I encouraged any Black women I met on the job, to forge ahead. I was more than willing to let them pass me by because I knew my opportunities would be somewhat greater, even when we came from the same economic and social background, because of my race. Sometimes they would express doubt but I told them to file an EEOC complaint or threaten to sue, even those who applied for jobs when I worked at an all white law firm because none of the white women who worked there had any legal experience besides me except what they learned on that job. A couple had no experience at all. Yes, I was often seen as a “trouble maker” by other whites but I didn’t care. I’d done enough statistics as a legal worker for lawyers who did sue on EEOC issues to know and my own experience proved it, also.

“This state of affairs affects poor black and white Baltimoreans differently. White men without college degrees are better-off because they have access to relatively lucrative blue-collar jobs through social ties within their families and their largely segregated neighborhoods. Eighty-nine percent of white high school dropouts were working at age 22; the figure for black dropouts was 40 percent. Contrary to popular portrayals of inner-city Baltimore, this isn’t due to differences in drug use and related social maladies. Higher- and lower-income white men were more likely than their African American counterparts to use hard drugs and marijuana, smoke, and binge drink. These young men, poor white and black alike, had numerous problem encounters with the law, but a police record was less of an impediment to whites in the job market. And in the industrial and construction trades, where 45% of whites were employed, but just 15% of blacks, whites earned practically twice what African American men earned.

“This matters for women and children’s well-being. Lower-SES white women had relatively low individual earnings, but their average family income was at parity with that of lower-SES white men’s because they married or (more often) partnered with those men. By way of comparison, at age 28, many more lower-SES African American women were parenting alone, and struggling to get by on their own low personal earnings. These factors gave lower-income white families more stable neighborhoods and home environments. Coupled with their superior access to job networks, this afforded white children a decided material advantage over their lower-SES African American counterparts.”

Morning LGF members!

I had The Today show on for a few minutes and happened to see a Meet The Todd preview of today’s show. He is going to be talking with John Boehner, and in the preview Chuck Todd asked Boehner if he was concerned about the police problems in America. A very watery-eyed Boehner said he was concerned about it…and that was the end of the tease with Todd saying more in the show.

I think I am going to watch just to see what Boehner is going to say about Baltimore, Freguson, Cleveland, New York, North Charleston SC, etc. I want to see how a leading Republican handles this issues knowing there is a big election year coming up.

Give the entire State back to Mexico for the difference. Those who run TX probably wouldn’t care since there are probably plenty of rich oil men who would love to get control of the Mexican drug trade and expand it and take over that country, no doubt about it. It is all about greed and keeping all the wealth for themselves, after everything is said and done. Without the influence of the oil baron lobbyists, we could even concentrate more on sustainable energy sources to battle climate change.

And I don’t even think that scenario would wake up those brain-dead Jade Helm types, even though I wouldn’t want to inflict any of them on Mexico, but we could exchange them for the more intelligent Mexicans, too.

re: #141 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

Wow. Jim Wright has gotten around to the Jade Helm insanity. A truly epic smackdown.

He covers absolutely everything. What a great rant.

Look, maybe you haven’t noticed, but we in the military are often called upon to operate in foreign lands, particularly in urban and suburban environments. How in the hell do you think we train for that? What? You think it’s just fucking magic? We get by on our charm and wholesome American looks? Do you have any idea what it takes to do what we do? Coordination, communication, navigation, talking to civilians, security, just finding your way around in a strange city, and a thousand other mundane things you’ve never thought of. How in the hell do you think we learn that?

You can’t exactly send troops to Tehran to practice you know - well, you can, but it’s bound to get you talked about, especially that part involving, you know, military invasion of a foreign country. So we do it here, in our country, where we can concentrate on the skills necessary without being shot at - except given the rise in paranoid droolers here at home, maybe it would be easier to do it in a hostile foreign land. These days, Baghdad is far more sane and friendly than whatever the fuck is going on down there in Texas.

Honest to God, what the hell is wrong with you people?

We do this all of the time. This is what we do when conservatives don’t have us invading other countries. We practice.

I watched the Greensboro Massacre video Justanotherhuman put up in #139 again having seen it before. That led me to do a search on some further info as I remember the incident, but not all the outcome.

One name stood out was that of Frazier Glenn Miller Jr. What was it about that name?

Well, he was a member of the National Socialist Party of America, the group involved in the Greensboro Massacre. Wiki says he made the claim the Communist Workers’ Party (the anti-Klan group in Greensboro) fired the first shot.

He has always been very politically active and a white supremacist pretty much his whole lifetime. He tried to run for political offices like governor many times, mostly in North Carolina and Missouri (any surprise there?). Wiki has him a member of first the Democratic party, then a Republican and finally he declared himself an Independent.

And not just a hate talker, he was a very active all through the years, a tradition seemingly passed down from his father. He was arrested in 1987 in Ozark Missouri where he and others were busted with many illegal automatic guns, C4, dynamite and over a half-ton of ammunition.

He even received $200,000 from Robert Jay Mathews, the leader of The Order. The Order was responsible for the shooting death of radio talk show host Alan Berg. Later he turned on the Order and was a states witness to help lessen his own convictions. I guess even other bad people couldn’t trust this piece of dirt.

Damn. I guess the F.B.I., ATF and other authorities should have had someone following the guy for ever. He was a determined, life-long hater.

So determined, on April 13, 2014, he was the only suspect in the Overland Park (Kansas) Jewish Community Center shootings where three people were killed. On December 18, 2014 he was judged competent to stand trial and they are seeking a death penalty. He is up for a bunch of federal hate-crimes.

Check the page on him at the SPLC site. This guy has been in and around a lot of the fringe media and even appeared on The Howard Stern Show. I guess they were all just asking questions.

SPLC - Frazier Glenn Miller

The problem with the Republican Party is they can’t handle the wingnuts. Left wingnuts are on the fringe of the Democratic Party and have little influence. Right wingnuts must be heeded and appeased by anybody who wants to make a run. You can try to sound as reasonable as you want, but the Republicans could care less, only to be amused at your attempt to sound sane.

Here’s one. He’s a former TX GOP lawmaker. He’s not there anymore.

In his letter to the governor, Todd Smith of Euless, who retired from public office in 2013, said he is “horrified that I have to choose between the possibility that my Governor actually believes this stuff and the possibility that my Governor doesn’t have the backbone to stand up to those who do.”

He said he wrote because the thought that the U.S. military would be a threat to Texas is “embarrassing” and it is important “to rational governance that thinking Republicans call you out on it.”

“Is there ANYBODY who is going to stand up to this radical nonsense that is a cancer on our State and our Party?” Smith asked.

And the answer is that we haven’t heard of anyone standing up to this radical nonsense that is a cancer on their state and party.

I disagree. The Republican seems to have abandoned the idea of representing anyone other than the ultra rich. How will you turn that around? Sane moderates are being ignored. You cannot help that which does not want to be helped. I think any attempt like you say is naive and enabling.

It’s like the drug addict that doesn’t want help or intervention. They either end up asking for it after they have fallen as far down as they can go, or they die. I am thinking we are going to see that death, they sure show no signs of wanting actual help. They do like enablers and people that excuse them. That keeps them alive, not viable, but able to keep up the abuse.

Remember how they said 2016 would be different? They would throw that big tent open and invite everyone form every ilk into it. They lied. They will keep lying. How long will they keep lying? As long as they can read responses like your’s and Dark’s. In fact they count on it.

Do as you please with party registration and voting in primaries, but that will realistically only have an effect if the GOP goes on an extended losing streak (which hasn’t happened since the FDR era).
