Alabama Shakes experienced a meteoric rise following the release of their 2012 debut and took their time crafting their sophomore album, expanding on their soulful blues-rock sound. Last week, timed to the release of their new CD, Sound & Color, they performed live at KCRW’s Apogee Sessions as part of NPR Music’s First Listen Live series.

Got their first album because of play here. At a recent cookout, a 17-yr old guest and I were the only ones who had heard of them.

Nope. Had they announced for the GOP nomination?

Hah. Quite true.
Went back in the DVR it was “CBS Sunday Morning”. That remaining oasis of nice on CBS morning TV before all the talking heads start up.

Recovering from an incursion of the 4 yr-old. We launched an Estes rocket twice, drove the old Land Rover through all the speed bumps, and did a session of pizza and Civ4. He’s getting the drift.

It’s like Stephen Colbert’s old “Formidable Opponent” bit, where he argued against himself, only sadly taking place in real life.

Christie set to argue his pension law is unconstitutional

Maybe Christie will shoot a video of him humiliating himself for disagreeing with himself, and then post it to YouTube as proof of his leadership. “A politician who is afraid of no one, even himself!”

Also a big shout out to my conservative and independent (“All politicians are the same, herp derp”) NJ fellow citizens who put this guy in office.

Twice.

WTF, people…

Love this tune. Heard it on KCRW, and immediately spun up the album on Beats (man, do I miss the decent UI & music-nerd functionality of MOG). This is crying out to be used as the soundtrack on a Tarantino montage.

23 ObserverArt  May 3, 2015 3:12:27pm

Great White Snark,

I see you didn’t like my comment about you buying GOP talking points about Hillary.

Is not settling for Hillary being a moderate by any definition falling to the default GOP talking points that portray her as a far left evil liberal? When you comment: ” whilst asking for moderate candidates of any kind it’s pretty telling” it hints you see all Democrats candidates current or speculated as being far left.

If I read that wrong, please excuse me. I don’t think I was the only one.

Don’t you find it odd you don’t like to be associated with GOP talking points and being part of group-think, even claiming you are the “indy” this blog/forum needs to point out everyone can’t see through those slats. Yet, you turn right around and toss anyone defending Hillary as being a band wagoner and put everyone behind those very slats.

Little Green Footballs might as well be Hillary’s campaign blog is pretty slamming of a lot of individuals compared to saying you are falling for some GOP talking points.

There are no prefect political candidates. A majority here at LGF seem prepared to admit there are far from reasonable candidates in the GOP. In fact, many are fearful of where the GOP is going and find the GOP dangerous. That is reality. I suggest that is not band wagon jumping.

It is challenging to summon up much sympathy after seeing pictures of battle dressed and seriously armed police laughing as they abuse unarmed protesters. It’s like finding it hard to not give an atta boy to a dog who has finally bitten the hand that has been beating him for years.

Apart from what I read here or accidentally run across in general, I’m not even well versed in the GOP talking points. I avoid the talking heads and don’t read GOP sites. My usual news on TV is BBC and Al Jaz. The bandwagon was self declared by a couple people to me here a week or two ago. Would you posit that does not exist here? That this particular board is not largely pro Clinton? How do I get the discussion above opposing Hilary=supporting GOP policy? Looking at some reactions, that’s not going well.

Opposing Hilary even for reasons that may (or may not point by point) lean right does not equate to GOP support.

Here is what I’m looking for-An economic conservative that will work damn hard on a domestic economy focus, and work to reduce corporate influence in policy making. A middle class focus for once. How far from that can I go and hold my nose? Gonna have to wait and see the post primary landscape to decide. I’m not interested in any isolationists.

Yeah, I think what there is a lot here is Hillary is most likely going to be the Democratic nominee and no matter what reservations I might have, I’ll vote for her because to allow any of the right-wing lunatics who are running (or yapping about running) as Republicans to get anywhere near the White House would be a suicide pact.

re: #34 Great White Snark

The thing is, the more you identify what you want as far as a fiscally responsible(conservative) candidate, the further you move from anything a Republican has put forth in almost a decade. You don’t seem to want a lot of deregulation or arbitrary tax cuts, and I haven’t seen them offer anything else. I’m not coming at this from a Pro-Hillary standpoint so much as a economic pragmatist standpoint. I already know I can’t vote Republican on social issues alone, the fact that their economic policies are terrible is just icing on a turd of a cake.

Well, I’ve pretty much accepted that Hillary is going to be the Dem nominee, and I hope she listens to people this time around and responds accordingly.

That said, her being elected in the General would mean another first, a woman President, and and a safer bet for the country than what Republicans are offering.

There’s little escaping that corporatism and their lobbyists is what’s both running and ruining this country’s economic system and until more people start seeing how far that could go and how it’s really affecting us as a people, we’re going to be stuck with it no matter who’s elected.

This is why I’m so happy to see Bernie toss his hat in. He is going to drive, no, pound this point at every step and make it an issue to be addressed. Hillary will not get to coast her way into the nomination and White House. This is a very good thing.

Right, so I look to the other saner party for a possible winner in my view. Someone I could not just vote but support with my few $$ and simple honest persuasion among my friends. Look I get that reality drags all the recent Presidents in the same direction in many ways. Like Gitmo, GWOT etc. Right now I could care freaking less about Gitmo/Drone strikes until we fix some things here at home.

If for any reason that means stop Hilary for a better candidate, the sooner the better. If what i’m looking for fails to make the ballot I have a vote problem and the country still has a huge problem right where it hurts IMHO.

I like a good bandwagon!

And I will say that when I read the Democratic platform and then the Republican platform, I would pretty much vote for any Democrat over any Republican.

My mantra has always been that the Democrats might not have all the answers, but at least they know what the questions are.

Any so-called “independent” who can read the platforms, which purportedly state what the parties stand for, and say that there is no difference between the two parties either has a reading comprehension problem or a fact recognition problem.

Agree that Hillary is the most likely, but it will be fun to have Bernie Sanders in the debates to bring as much attention as he can to income disparity. It’ll be good for the party to talk about this out loud (not in quiet rooms).

re: #50 Great White Snark

So just vote for the best candidate. I don’t know if that’s super difficult with the choices that are laid out right now. You can vote for a bunch of candidates that are completely counter to everything you want (and are batshit), or you could vote for a candidate that has some of what you want, and doesn’t seem to be batshit. I mean, perspective wise, we do have a presidential candidate who claims to have called the Pentagon to make sure the US military wasn’t about to try to take over Texas. AND he has a crappy economic policy.

The only way to get a candidate to line up with EVERYTHING you want, is to run yourself.

I would never say the board is not pro Clinton. To me the leap is saying everyone is a riding a bandwagon.

Realistically we really only get two choices. Clearly many think there is one. That is not riding being on a band wagon. It is the reality of the situation and the times. At least for what we know right now.

I should would like to know though, how you view Hillary if she isn’t a moderate. I can understand if she doesn’t fit your want of an economic wiz, but I really do not understand how she is not moderate, all things considered.

And I would totally understand if you do not want to define her.

Again sorry if I read you wrong. I am pretty sure you at least understand how I made the mistake of seeing your comment in the light of the typical GOP criticism of her.

Anyone would have to be living under a rock to not see the GOP portrays her as the most evil, liberal, feminist socialist commie ever!

Bandwagon is not meant as any insult, just a nod to a super majority. Shorthand, that’s all. Economic wiz? That would be a adviser or cabinet member prospect. Where she puts the economic emphasis is what I refer to. Will she put the economy out in front of the rest of the platform? Maybe I’ll vote Bernie in the primary. California rules would allow that. I hope someone in the GOP realizes why they have the issues they have and then gets behind the wheel of the Clown Bus and backs that sucker right over most of the current or about to be candidates. The more people that jump aboard the bus before it backs up the better.

83 Justanotherhuman  May 3, 2015 4:13:15pm

I remember writing a letter to the editor of the local Charlotte rag about 40 yrs ago (they loved hearing from me) and charging that city officials were bowing too low to corporate interests, that they would eventually have the upper hand in running the city, to the detriment of what social reforms had been made in the last 20 yrs, such as the desegregation of schools and the beginnings of housing de-segregation.

Turned out they have pretty much taken everything over completely, even to having a heavy hand in the school district, as well as destroying neighborhoods, and creating even more suburban “white flight”. This is considered “progress” these days. Even in the 90s, when I was still working downtown, I could see the future as the bankers continued to build the high rises and to take over the center city, driving out the mercantile class, and it wasn’t pretty then and is uglier today. What had been thriving Black neighborhoods had, over the years, disintegrated and any residential areas left were gentrified and condos and/or very expensive apts were built and bldgs converted. Frantic during daylight, forbidding at night except for those who live there who enjoy their amenities, and the entire city bulging at the seams. Consolidation has meant that the actual city encompasses the entire county and no one really wants to live there as it becomes increasingly expensive from the center out. Even so, some have no other place to go and no alternative.

Every city has its own history, doesn’t it?

re: #74 Great White Snark

Bandwagon is not meant as any insult, just a nod to a super majority. Shorthand, that’s all. Economic wiz? That would be a adviser or cabinet member prospect. Where she puts the economic emphasis is what I refer to. Will she put the economy out in front of the rest of the platform? Maybe I’ll vote Bernie in the primary. California rules would allow that. Heck that guy might be what I’m looking for but my reading of him is not yet up to par. My fault, just have not spent the time yet.

Can I suggest you should have used another word other than bandwagon. I would say to most people bandwagon is saying people are mindless and jumping in because it is fashionable. That sort of says no thought given and knee-jerk. That may be why everyone is taking the term to task. This blog/forum is a bit too thinking and aware to be termed like that.

My take on present-day US politics is very simple. Nothing will be solved until this problem of the GOP wreckers is addressed. The only plausible way for the GOP to start cleaning up its act is for the GOP to have a series of big losses in presidential elections (i.e., 40+ state blowouts).

Unfortunately, this would appear to be impossible, since the deep red states really are a fortress from which no (D) electoral votes will come for the foreseeable future.

Had a good day today. Helped with a “Discover Scuba” (about a 1 hour intro to scuba in the pool) for a group from the Wounded Warrior Project, and a few other folks in there too.

Had one guy just couldn’t do it. He would breath above water, but as soon as he leaned down and put his face in the water he would start to tremble. Worked with him for about 20 minutes, but he wasn’t having fun and he bailed. One of the others got a bit nervous and bolted to the surface from about 10 foot or so. Got him calmed back down and he had a great time.

Looks like a couple of them might go ahead and get certified. Always fun.

I had a very productive day today. With the help of a liberal application of WD-40 and some good old-fashioned elbow grease, I extracted the (extremely rusty and gunky) spark plugs from the old land yacht and was able to determine that the engine did not, in fact, need to be broken loose - it still turned. So I lifted the carburetor from the engine so I could rebuild it here at home, and things are very much looking up for my goal of having the motor running next weekend.

Unfortunately, this would appear to be impossible, since the deep red states really are a fortress from which no (D) electoral votes will come for the foreseeable future.

Let’s look ahead to the 2020 election. The Republicans are well aware of the demographic trends in the United States. Less older white voters and more minority voters. After their successes in 2010, the Republicans gained control of many State Legislatures and Governorships and used their control to Gerrymander many safe Republican House Districts. In the not too distant future, I expect the Republicans to attempt to change the States they control from a winner takes all of the Electoral Votes in a State to a system like Maines and Iowas where the Electoral Votes are split. In Maine and Iowa the winner in the Congressional District gets that electoral vote representing the House seat and the overall winner for the State gets the 2 electoral votes representing the two Senate seats. Safe House seats equals safe Electoral College votes.

I think this is the only way the Republicans can maintain their power beyond 2020. And remember, after 2020, there will be a new census and we’ll have to go through the whole mess again.

I think this is the only way the Republicans can maintain their power beyond 2020. And remember, after 2020, there will be a new census and we’ll have to go through the whole mess again.

To my enormous disappointment, the country acquiesced in the 2000 election robbery. “500,000 votes? Eh, close enough!” What happens when a republican loses the popular vote by 10 or 15 points but wins the Electoral College through this kind of jiggery-pokery? Will people stand still for that?

Utah Man Puts Hands Up, Gets Face Eaten by Police Dog Anyway

A Utah man decided to burn his Christmas tree inside a garbage can, leading to a police call for “disturbing the peace,” resulting in a police dog snatching its jaws to his face and not letting go, even though the man was following police orders to place his hands in the air.
Martin Lee Hoogveldt, lives in West Jordan, a bedroom community in southwest of Salt Lake City. Hoogveldt, 33, assumed that complying immediately with West Jordan Police officers verbal commands, would ensure a safe arrest, especially after they threatened to release their canine if he resisted.
But Martin raised his hands, then suffered the indignity of having his face eaten.

re: #142 Cheechako

I am expecting the Republicans to play games with the electoral votes of states they control in the 2016 cycle.

My arrival in California in the winter of 1981-82 coincided with the first of the big El Nino years of the 80s and 90s, after the drought of the 1970s. A LOT of mudslides, flooding, etc. It seemed like it rained HARD every other day for two months.

In between, you’d get that beautiful crystalline clarity you get out here that you never get Back East unless it’s about -20, where you feel like you could pick out individual trees on Mt Diablo.

A neo-Pagan religion drawing on images of fiercely proud, boar-hunting Norsemen and their white-skinned Aryan womenfolk is increasingly taking root among Skinheads, neo-Nazis and other white supremacists across the nation.

Asatrú leaders have opened prison ministries in at least five states recently, and their many jailed followers are heavily white supremacist. A leading proselytizer, iimprisoned terrorist David Lane, has been writing prolifically and influencing many to adopt his racist interpretations.

In modern American conservatism those points are mutual exclusive.

re: #235 Bubblehead II

I’ve read some criticism of the book, mainly this one: huffingtonpost.com.

As an historian, and one who is deeply concerned with her reputation as a truth seeker, she candidly admits the object of her concern is not without flaws. After admitting that she is not a scientist, she almost immediately claims that there is little evidence to back up the consensus position on human sexual development. Either she’s lying, or hasn’t done her homework. As I’ve presented, the developing consensus was already publicly available back in 2005 in a publication co-authored by many of the luminaries in the field, called “Atypical Gender Development.” In the ensuing decade the evidence has continued to pile up, but it has had no impact on her search for the truth. She still considers the consensus as ideologically biased and intent on a witch hunt, led by a number of well-known and highly successful trans activists. That one of these women is a well-respected economist (Deirdre McCloskey) and another is one of the most important inventors in American history (Lynn Conway) has no effect on her critique. Poor Professor Bailey has been attacked and must be defended by her, her actions enabling others to rise to his defense as well.

Based on what I read Friday morning, the white supremacists are hoping Muslims will terrorize all the Jews into going to live in Israel, then once the Jews are gone they can get rid of the Muslims. By the way, I saw Lord of the Pies said this up above regarding this Texas thing with Gellar.

The “narrative seems to be very stringently stage-managed.”

I wonder if something planned turned out all wrong. I don’t know all that much about Gellar, but she does seem to be a person that goes to all lengths.

Did it all turn all too real when it was not meant to be that real? Setup? Prank gone wrong?

It’s unclear exactly what happened.

The AP says:

Two armed men who opened fire on a security officer outside of a provocative contest for cartoons depictions of the Prophet Muhammad have been killed, authorities in the Dallas suburb of Garland said Sunday night.

The City of Garland said in a statement posted on its Facebook page Sunday night that two men drove up to the Curtis Culwell Center and began shooting at a security officer. […]

Johnny Roby of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was attending the conference. He told The Associated Press he was outside the building when he heard around about 20 shots that appeared to be coming from the direction of a car passing by. […]

The Dallas Morning News says:

The two men pulled up in a vehicle and shot a Garland ISD security officer. The men were fatally shot by Garland police, and their bodies remain on the street outside the events center.

The security officer was released from the hospital after his wounds were treated. […]

Srsly? This points out how we got where we freaking are. Settling for far less. “And a pony”. Oh FFS. Try to take the discussion into policy and see what happens.

Have at it! Personally, I’d like to see you reconcile ‘economic conservative’ and ‘strong middle class’. My observation is that everything about economics that any Conservative has peddled generally involves tax cuts and ‘getting government out of the way’.

The problem is, we’ve done both, and they don’t do what’s been advertized.

For both-siderism to have any merit at all, both sides needs to be making proposals that are at least worth considering.

The Republicans are presently incapable of that.

I gave up on Firefox long ago, but I keep the current version around just in case, for those few websites that don’t seem to want to play with Chrome.

I used to use Safari until it became a memory hog, then switched to Chrome because it was small and fast. But Google has added so much over the past year that now Chrome takes up a gigabyte just to open LGF.

394 klys (maker of Silmarils)  May 3, 2015 8:05:52pm

re: #393 freetoken

I rarely have a single LGF tab take up a gig. The exception to this would be when I open a 500-600 thread comment cold. Most of my LGF tabs are hovering in the 300-550kB range.

Spy will sometimes break a gig if I have let it run without force-closing at least one for a week+.

All of these numbers are without ads, of course. I can’t speak to what they would be with ads.

Just my experience. Yours clearly varies somewhat.

“as generally peddled” is not my lookout. Our observations, being subjective by their nature are all good. Trivializing a point like that gets a call out. Low blow as it were.

The thing is, it doesn’t matter who did it. It could have been ISIS operatives (shipped in by Obama, no doubt, to soften up Texas for the Jade Helm invasion) or it could have been a couple of rednecks driving by who saw the name “Mohammed” on a sign and opened fire.

If it was the latter, none of the nuts are going to believe it. The former is their narrative and they’re going to go with it.

Dear Asshole Client,

Writing to me and CC’ing my bosses on 4pm Sunday afternoon begging for a comprehensive report for April for noon tomorrow is a dick move.

I am not a goddamn miracle worker. I have a life outside the office. I am in the process of having to find a place to move quickly because my landlord sold the property I live in. I need to run errands. I had even hoped to go see a movie for the first time in fucking forever since I’ve got a job and money again, but that couldn’t happen either.

You are getting a quick and dirty list of numbers tomorrow for everything that was spent and done in April and you’re going to fucking like it. Yeah, it’s not flashy. But it’s what I can do at the last goddamn minute since you apparently can’t look at the daily reports I send you because there aren’t enough graphics.

As for me, I’m emailing the stuff I’ve done to myself and going to bed. Good night.

No love,
Me

re: #110 RealityBasedSteve

Always fun.

RBS

I can swim, but I’m not a real water bug. I’m still not comfortable putting my head underwater for very long, despite long years of trying. But I had a ball when I had a short scuba lesson a few years back. Once I remembered “breath through your mouth, idiot!”, I was OK. In fact, I want to do it again, with an English speaking instructor. ;-)
