Pamela Geller: Burmese Muslims Had It Coming

She really doesn’t believe in freedom or human rights.

In her recent Time magazine piece, Pamela Geller denies that she and her organization, American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), were “asking for it” when their “Draw the Prophet” contest was attacked by Muslim extremists on Sunday. She claims they were fighting for “freedom,” but how does she feel about the freedom of Muslims to live and worship freely? One need only look at her attitude towards the Rohingya people of Burma to see her hypocrisy.

The Rohingya are an ethnic minority in Burma. As Muslims, they face constant persecution from the Buddhist majority. For decades they have been denied basic civil rights. In recent years, they have been forced to lived in squalid camps.

Two years after the outbreak of communal violence, a deepening humanitarian crisis is claiming more lives by the day. Malnutrition and waterborne illnesses in the camps, aggravated by the eviction of aid groups and onset of monsoon rains, have led to a surge of deaths that are easily preventable. In a country that’s still being hailed in the West for its tilt toward democracy, the ongoing blockade on critical aid to more than 100,000 displaced Rohingya around Sittwe — and thousands elsewhere in Rakhine state — amounts to a crime against humanity, rights groups say.

For years, the Rohingya have been denied citizenship in Buddhist-majority Burma, and have faced severe restrictions on marriage, employment, health care and education. Now, it seems, the Burmese authorities are determined to starve and sicken the Rohingya out of existence.

Organizations from Amnesty International to the Brookings Institute to the Heritage Foundation recognized the atrocities being committed in Burma. In 2013, the U.S. House of Representatives proposed a resolution condemning the persecution of the Rohingya. Geller opposed it.

In her mind, because the Rohingya are Muslim, they deserve such treatment. In an AFDI “Action Alert” she wrote:

Support the Buddhists in Burma. Seriously. Do this. I am in Boston, as our free speech lawsuit is being heard today, but I will be working the phones, and so should you. Burma is 90% Buddhist. These are a peaceful people. The Muslims have brought war to Burma.

Typically, while fighting for her own rights, she disparages the Rohingya and their rights. She engages in a perverse example of blaming the victim. From there, Geller continues into an all out xenophobic, paranoid, hate-filled rant:

Anywhere Muslims immigrate, conflict follows. And so it goes in Burma. More on the effects of Muslim immigration here. When tolerant and culturally diverse societies agree to Muslim demands for their religious privileges, so begins the process of islamization…..At 2% to 5%, they begin to proselytize from other ethnic minorities and disaffected groups, often with major recruiting from the jails and among street gangs….From 5% on, they exercise an inordinate influence in proportion to their percentage of the population. For example, they will push for the introduction of halal (clean by Islamic standards) food, thereby securing food preparation jobs for Muslims…When Muslims approach 10% of the population, they tend to increase lawlessness as a means of complaint about their conditions…After reaching 20%, nations can expect hair-trigger rioting, jihad militia formations, sporadic killings, and the burnings of Christian churches and Jewish synagogues…At 40%, nations experience widespread massacres, chronic terror attacks, and ongoing militia warfare…From 60%, nations experience unfettered persecution of non-believers of all other religions (including non-conforming Muslims), sporadic ethnic cleansing (genocide), use of Sharia Law as a weapon…After 80%, expect daily intimidation and violent jihad, some State-run ethnic cleansing, and even some genocide, as these nations drive out the infidels, and move toward 100% Muslim, such as has been experienced…100% will usher in the peace of ‘Dar-es-Salaam’ — the Islamic House of Peace. Here there’s supposed to be peace, because everybody is a Muslim, the Madrasses are the only schools, and the Koran is the only word.

The House, to their credit, passed the resolution despite opposition.

Does Geller deserve first amendment protection? Of course she does, just like the KKK and the Westboro Baptists. But like these other groups, she is not fighting for “freedom” or “human rights.” She is a hateful, spiteful bigot who sees the “other” as less than human.
