Came back to drop this off since we were discussing WWI in an earlier thread today and the subject came up:
How the Occupation of Istanbul Shaped the Modern Middle East
DURHAM, NC - At the end of World War I, the defeated capital of the Ottoman Empire, Istanbul, was “a city of poverty and refugees” with a multiethnic population of 1 million, with 100,000 refugees including Balkan Muslims, Russians, Crimean and Caucasian Muslims, Jews, Armenians and Turks.
“Multiple ethnicities and languages mixed and mingled. Each brought with it a separate ideology and vision,” said Duke Associate Professor of Turkish & Middle Eastern Studies Erdağ Göknar, speaking last week as part of the provost office’s Thomas Langford Lectureship.
When the British, French, Italians and Greeks arrived to occupy the city in 1918, they ignored the cosmopolitan space of the city, focusing instead on nationalities. The logic of emphasizing national groups was informed by Wilsonian principles of national self-determination. This was the same logic that led to the greater partition of Ottoman territory that Göknar said reconstituted the Middle East and whose violent consequences can be seen throughout the region today. It is certainly not helpful that the few GOP voices raised against this nonsense from senior GOPers seem to come from retired or otherwise inactive GOPers, as opposed to the current crop of GOP leaders.
It is also massively unhelpful that even relatively moderate GOPers completely reject any criticism of the GOP that doesn’t come from one of their own.

Glad life and limb was spared! Oy!
I can remember a particular day, 11 July 2011 actually, the worst commute I’ve ever had to endure. It rained a couple of inches in an hour right before I had to drive home from work. I encountered so many flooded out roadways. I pac-manned my way around for a while, not getting anywhere (Remember folks, if the road is covered in water TURN AROUND!) until I ran into some dude with a huge truck. Him and I coordinated and got a few of the small vehicles through some deep water in a major intersection. He’d just drive his lifted-all-to-fuck F-350 through the water and the wake would leave just enough pavement for a few cars to get through. That shit was surreal.

Diatomaceous earth is a good non-toxic fix for indoor ants. If you sprinkle it along their trail it gets into the joints in the exoskeleton and locks them up tight.

They haven’t had a well-defined trail until after I put out the bait. I know the entry point is under the toilet at this point and replacing it with a water-saving version is definitely on the potential list for dealing with things. We’d do both at once, though, and have a plumber come in to handle it (I know where to draw the online on doing my own home improvement and I don’t feel up to dealing with that one right now) and I haven’t had the time to deal with it since this flared up so badly last week.
There is some chance my app will go up on the Google Play store tomorrow, at which point I can switch gears and deal with some of this shit. And also job hunting again, sigh.

It’s very common to criticize the US for not ratifying the Treaty of Versailles and not joining the League of Nations—I’ve done it myself, frequently. It’s worth remembering, though, that just as Britain was given a LoN Mandate over Palestine and Transjordan, and France was given Syria and the Lebanon, the US’s Mandate was to have been The Straits (including Constantinople) and Turkish Armenia. I can’t even imagine what a mess that would have been.

I’m seeing a lot of people excited about the Tesla home battery. I don’t get it, why spend twice as much per kWh of capacity over lead acid banks? I can see where there’s a convenience factor of never having to check specific gravity, and they look cool, but that’s really high premium to pay for that. The lighter batteries make sense in cars where the power to move the weight of the battery comes from the battery, but it just doesn’t matter at all in a static storage set up.
I guess the real upside is the economy of scale, the people they can convince to buy these things subsidize the cost of the same technology for the cars.

The site where Doncaster sits was once a Roman fort constructed in the 1st Century in what is now South Yorkshire. British history is totally fascinating. It’s where my ancestors originated before coming to North America and probably why I’m so fascinated with it. I suppose it’s human nature to want to explore that aspect of one’s past. If my ancestors had stayed in Britain, I would probably have wound up in a village somewhere, content to live a provincial life. I imagine that the first settlers in this country naturally migrated to areas that reminded them of where they came from—city, town, rural, etc. I don’t think I’m being “sentimental” about this because I don’t like rank sentimentality.
One day, perhaps we’ll understand how your origins influences one’s modern day persona and how that affects humanity’s on-going trip from one era to the next and perhaps, how that molds one’s own personality. IIRC, Jung tried that with “genetic memory” and modern day psychology has pretty much dismissed it, but I’m not so sure it should be in all aspects, as I think humans are very plastic in their adaption to time and place, although it could explain why there is so much “unease”. For instance, what kind of person would I be if my forebears had settled in another area of the world and would I still think this way?
I never much liked what I did for a living nor was I ever comfortable living in cities with all their hustle and bustle and that could explain my lifelong feeling of discomfort,. But it also informed me in other ways, such as respecting other people different than myself and solving the many conflicts I had, in effect, not thinking provincially. Or maybe, it’s just modern life in general that tends to rip so many from our natural connections in relation to the earth itself. Who knows? I wish I had studied more and not been so “busy”. Or maybe I have far too much time now to dwell on subjects like this. : )

Youth vote to play big role in British election
LONDON — Young people may play a decisive role in Thursday’s general election in Britain.
Nearly three quarters of the 6.8 million 18-to-24-year-olds who are registered to vote are expected to cast ballots in the tight race that may end inconclusively Friday, forcing either the Conservative or Labour parties to scramble to form a coalition government with more minor parties.
The number, from the youth volunteering charity VInspired, is 14% higher than at the last general election in 2010, when just 44% of people in that age group voted. The total turnout that year was 65.1%. More

I had a problem with fruit flies a few years back and wrote about my evil stratagems.
I felt wickedly clever when I tried to lure them to their doom with some vinegar and a piece of fruit left in an open microwave oven.(Should I patent this idea?)
I allowed them to gather for about an hour, and then slammed the door shut and started it up on high. I stopped when the plum slices were unrecognizable, sizzling masses. I opened the door, and at least one fruit fly zipped out!
I may have come off as cruel in my efforts to purge the kitchen of fruit flies. But when I opted for the microwave, remember, I was defending my home. I looked around my kitchen, desperate for a non-toxic way of keeping those inscrutable invaders away (dead).
Is nuking them in the microwave so much crueler than spraying them with a deadly neuro-toxin (like Hitler), or leaving them to starve on a sticky strip (like Pol Pot)? Aren’t those other traps really just a way of pretending you are not killing them, but (like Milosevic) just relocating them———into the trap? And isn’t keeping a clean kitchen just yet another way of starving them slowly to death (like Stalin)? And hey, I never actually chased them around with the brulee torch; I was just brainstorming. And I DID feed them in the microwave.

EU to investigate claims McDonald’s avoided $1bn in tax
The European Union competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager said on Tuesday that she was examining claims, made by trade unions, that McDonald’s paid just 𠫁6m of tax on royalties worth 𠫃.7bn between 2009 and 2013.
“We are looking into the information gained by trade unions when it comes to McDonald’s in order to assess if there is a case, or if we should open cases there,” Vestager said.
McDonald’s is accused of channelling money through a Luxembourg-based subsidiary with a Swiss branch to exploit a generous tax break on intellectual property rights. It is a similar structure to that used by a host of multinationals exposed by the Guardian’s LuxLeaks investigation last year.

It’s hard enough to fire bad cops, but then they’re able to get hired by other departments who then have to deal with the bad cops too - and so too do the communities they’re supposed to serve.

Sheriff: naked man in lawn chair threatens neighbors with AK-47
When deputies arrived, they found Carroll “completely naked” on the back porch of his home at 2828 Deal Road, lot 5. The report indicated Carroll had a towel around his neck.
The report notes that when asked why he was naked, Carroll, referring to his neighbor said “he p***** me off so I sat in that chair.” Carroll allegedly told deputies that he wanted to be naked and wasn’t going to put on any clothes, stating “I don’t care.”
Deputies asked Carroll if he had threatened his neighbors by saying that he had an AK-47 and “knew how to use it.” Carroll said that he did make the statement, then laughed, according to the report.

Regarding the Stewart video topic of this thread. Hasn’t Texas always seen itself as it’s own entity and is only considered part of the union of states because they lent their awesomeness to the other 49 who were glad to have them?
I think that is called proudly independent. One big lone star on that flag, representative of only one state.
So yeah, they probably see this as an invasion since the union was taken away from them by the African-American Socialists Commie Marxist Muslim Community Organizer and they never voted for that to happen.
Just as soon as Ted Cruz or Rick Perry become President this will all be forgotten.
Oh, wait. Maybe the Feds know that is not going to happen so they are taking positions to fight off the revolution that is coming when Texans find out they aren’t going to have a Texan as President.

HUNTINGTON, w.va. (WSAZ) — A Marshall football player has been dismissed from the team after police said he attacked a gay couple.
They said he punched them in the face in Huntington last month as they walked down the street.
Many people have spoken out against the alleged attacks, including Marshall University officials who called them “bigoted” and “violent” and said they won’t be tolerated.
In a tweet late Wednesday afternoon, Marshall Athletic Director Mike Hamrick said, “Coach Holliday and I have decided to dismiss Steward Butler from our program in light of additional information regarding his charges.”
This came just hours after they first put him on indefinite suspension.

That’s why one should never drive through floodwaters. That’s what might be hidden underneath.
That picture reminds me of a sad flash flood story I will always remember. A lot of times I’d relax on weekends by jumping in my VW GTi and go out country roading. Ohio has some great sportin’ car type roads south east of Columbus, especially around the Hocking Hills area.
One road that I used to get out to the metro area and into the country is Coonpath road just north of Lancaster.
One morning on the news I heard there was a heavy rains in that area and they got 6 inches in a little over an hour. A small creek that I drove over many times on Coonpath Road had turned into a raging river with the big rain and it totally wiped out the small bridge on the road went over the creek.
Apparently sometime in the early morning during the storm a young mother and her baby drove down the road and never noticed the bridge was gone. They fell into the raging water and were washed so far down into the hilly farms in the surrounding area it took authorities some time to find out what happened. No one knew until the car was found.
By the time the car was discovered both the mother and child were dead from drowning. It was so sad.
If you drive over that area today, you can see it is a newer bridge and some new road to replace all that was wiped out.
And if you stop and look down you will notice a tiny little creek about a foot wide with a trickle of water.

Don’t forget O’Malley and Webb. That’s four right there. But I’m with you, I don’t like it just being assumed that it’s Hillary’s turn. I think it’s best for the party when someone like Obama or even Hillary’s own husband has to work hard for the nomination. The Dems don’t need a grand jury of candidates but it would be nice if there was a healthy debate so Hillary doesn’t get the nomination by default.

Let’s argue theoretically:
If Pamela is right (she’s not) and Muslims are “savages” (they’re not) then why is she repeatedly poking sticks in the eyes of “savages”
Isn’t that the same as the guy who crawls into the tiger enclosure at the zoo?
Your reference to tigers reminds me. The morning local news showed the court room where the mother that dropped her baby into the Cheetah exhibit at the Cleveland Zoo back a few ago was being charged.
She is from the Columbus metro area, Delaware Ohio and worked on Sawmill Road right out where my previous job was at in Powell.
Guess what her job was.
She is (was?) the manager at the KinderCare child care center.
Link to local article about it for those that might not have heard the stopry that was posted here at LGF previously.
Delaware County woman charged after son falls into cheetah enclosure
—CUT—
Mrs. Schwab, the assistant manager of the KinderCare at 4895 Sawmill Rd. on the Northwest Side, is on leave, said Colleen Moran, a spokeswoman for Knowledge Universe, which operates KinderCare. Moran said she was unaware of any complaints, warnings or disciplinary actions against Mrs. Schwab during her 13 years working for the company.
“We were saddened to hear of Saturday’s incident at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo involving Michelle Schwab’s son, and we wish him a speedy recovery,” Moran said in a statement. “Ms. Schwab … is currently home with her family and will remain out of our center while this issue is investigated and addressed.”

THIS. A little while ago I was reading a Gothamist article about the events in Garland. I enjoyed it until the last paragraph in which the author said:
One day our children may live in a world where it’s possible to denounce both Pamela Geller and the psychopathic religious zealots who want her dead, but if we have to choose sides here, we probably have to choose Geller and free speech, no matter how offensive hers may be. Ugh. Guess this means we’re on team Geller here. The terrorists have won.
So I asked him:

Of those who ran previously, what makes any of them think that they are now better positioned to be President? What have they accomplished since the last time they ran?
For Santorum, nothing. He’s out of politics for a couple of years, so he probably think that counts towards outsider credibility.
For Democrats, at least Hillary was SoS since running last, so there’s foreign policy experience she didn’t have previously. Same can’t be said of the rest of the clown car on the GOP side.
The rest are a mix of 1st timers who have no actual experience (Carson), whose business credibility strains creduilty (Fiorina) and governors who have turned their states into a basket case (Jindal, Walker, Christie), and senators with no actual experience (Rubio) or whose experience is primarily in shutting down government and costing the nation billions in the process (Cruz).
Yeah, what a thrill.

Woke up this morning to find my cell phone service suspended because I missed last month’s payment. Relying on customer timing for income can be a bit of a mess, unfortunately. It means there are times I have good income but other times I have little income and the bad income stretches from Nov. to Apr. I got hit with an unexpected expense a couple of weeks ago so decided to hold off paying my phone bill because THEY’VE ALWAYS LET IT SLIDE PAST 30 DAYS BEFORE.
My fault of course, but I hate it when my complex payment plans get screwed up.

2. The Billie Holliday catalog of songs
3. Nick Launay, producer for the Bad Seeds and others
4. The Bad Seeds’ rhythm section
5. Guitars by Nick Zinner (YeahYeahYeahs) and T-Bone Burnett
6. String arrangements by Van Dyke Parks
I bought this a couple of days after its release. In my not-at-all-humble opinion, it’s breathtaking, moody (yet celebratory), and emotionally resonant, more than worthy of the material being covered. A truly magnificent record, in all respects. Something to be celebrated.

“When I hear our current president say he wants Christians to get off their high horse so we can make nice with radical jihadists, I wonder if he can watch a Western from the ’50s and be able to figure out who the good guys and the bad guys really are,” Huckabee said.

Italy, U.S. say break up mafia cocaine ring run out of pizzeria
(Reuters) - Italian and U.S. agents broke up a major cocaine trafficking network run out of a New York City pizzeria, detaining 13 Italians with links to organized crime on Thursday, police said.
Italy’s elite SCO police and FBI agents captured the men as they slept in their homes in the southern Italian region of Calabria and held them on charges of conspiracy to run an international drug trafficking ring, police added.
The year-long investigation, dubbed Operation Columbus, was led by federal investigators in Brooklyn and prosecutors in Calabria, the region that is home to the ‘Ndrangheta, a mafia group on the Italian mainland akin to Sicily’s Cosa Nostra.
The network is accused of organizing cocaine shipments from Costa Rica to the United States and Europe. More

Some parents in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district want school officials to take action after a controversial Instagram post and comment appeared after a school field trip to Gettysburg.

I know but some apology is better than no apology at all. That said, when the fuck are people in parts of the South going to get over the fact that the South fucking lost and isn’t going to “rise again.” Really, I don’t think Americans especially those that glamorize the CSA realize how destructive the Civil War was. If you were alive during the Civil War chances were good that you had someone related to you or close to you killed in the war.

re: #305 lawhawk
Funny, I had a similar experience with him years ago, after the 2nd or 3rd book. Ex was working an Arlington bookstore, nice parquet floors. He was basking in his glory, signing for all manner of Pentagon staff types who worked nearby. He treated the store staff like a pack of bothersome rats there only to serve him and who were well beneath him.
Forgetting, of course, that the same staff set him up with a comfy chair and a nice table while ensuring there were enough copies of his twaddle available for the huge line of his fans so none of them went without. The staff also got him coffee and water, treating him with (undeserved) respect.
Which he repaid by ignoring the ashtray on his table and crushing out every one of his cigarettes on the nice parquet floor.
Not a word of thanks to anyone involved on the store’s part. What’s the opposite of “gracious”? Tom “Lord of the Putzes” Clancy.
I’ve scraped more valuable schmutz from my tennis shoes on a muddy day.
I’ve met at least a dozen authors at various events over the years (among them Anne Rice, James Ellroy, Harlan Ellison, Doris Kearns Godwin, Ken Kesey, Vincent Bugliosi and Andrew Vachss). ALL of these folks were gracious to everyone in their radar at these events, without exception.
And every one of them has more talent in their nose hairs than the overbloated hack Clancy.

Sort of a non-apology apology.
The student who posted the photo to Instagram issued an apology on April 16 saying, “I’m sorry that my picture offended people and especially my initial caption.” The apology went on to say, “I’m proud to be a part of my state and I’m sorry my photo was so offensive but I find it appropriate in that I’m honoring heroes that fought to protect their home and families.”

Oh well fuck that. And it’s laughable that she’s giving the crap about protecting their family and homes when they were visiting Pennsylvania, a state that the Army of Northern Virginia invaded. John Burns was defending his home. The men of the CSA were defending a horrid institution. I mean she can be proud of her individual ancestors and that’s her freedom to do so but the crack about slaves was just pathetic.

But when D’Souza — the maker of the anti-President Obama film “2016: Obama’s America” — tried to take a summer vacation from his sentence at the Mater Dei School, Manhattan federal Judge Richard Berman sarcastically rejected his request. “With respect to [his parole officer’s ] request that Mr. D’Souza’s community service hours be ‘waived’ from June 1, 2015 until July 13, 2015, the request is respectfully denied,” Berman wrote. “The short explanation is, as all criminal defendants are aware, that we don’t provide ‘summer breaks’ in these circumstances.”

The very point the author makes is nonsense and misleading, it would remain such regardless of where it appeared.
By mentioning the fact (widely reported at the time) that ISIS was trying to use Ferguson both as a recruitment tool and as a possible source of a bigger conflagration, DHS is no way and form equated the protesters and terrorists.
It’s the same bullshit that was used against DHS by the right, when they screeched that mentioning the fact that RW terrorists were likely to be vets meant that Obama’s DHS equated the saintly veterans with terrorists.

It was only the “regimental” battle flag of the 49th Infantry, and none of those were recruited from the area she’s in. Those are all counties in the Piedmont for the most part and it was a square flag, not a rectangular one.

There is no statue or holiday named for my great great grandfather and you certainly don’t know his name but he was more of a patriot than Robert E. Lee.

.@Kragar_LGF They have to pretend that their supporters are smart people, and that everything is Dems fault, or the narrative falls apart.

And for my Theory of Relativity:
If your parents didn’t have children,
you probably won’t either.
A well-placed “probably”, sir!

Blame Obama for the paranoia they’ve given their supporters for years but then act like Obama is wrong to bring up failed policies of the previous Republican administration. Yeah that’s the ticket Republicans.

re: #395 Kragar
You know what else is Obama’s fault?
*That Obama funded job training so MrBWS could get his Class A CDL while he was laid off for more than a year.
*That the Class A CDL qualified MrBWS for a high-paying IBEW job.
*That the high paying union job also included the first health insurance for us after more than 10 years of doing without.
*That we are able to build a new house.
*That we can afford alternative energy to supplement commercial sources.
*That other members of my family, who aren’t as financially well off as we are, now have affordable health insurance.
There are a few more things, but I’ll stop.
I mean this very sincerely: Thank you Obama!

Yeah I’m off for a few days. :)
I like their summer shandy. Has almost a lemon aide like taste to it but not too sweet like Mike’s.

Love their summer shandy too. This is the same, but with grapefruit. It’s actually quite refreshing. A nice change of pace. Now, that Pipeworks Ninja vs. Unicorn. It’s magnificent. And proudly representing Chicago. :)

I’ll have to give it a try then. Grapefruit is good. I tried their cranberry this winter. Not bad but not as good as the Summershandy.

She should read more about what they were protecting. I’m sure there were plenty of Germans who thought they were protecting Germany from “Bolshevism” too. I rarely ever do that but I think it’s fair to compare the Nazis to the CSA.
Please don’t Go-dwin there.
As in every case, there is the individual valor and motivation of individual soldiers on both sides of every conflict, then there is the motivation behind the governments that sent them to fight.
Let us not mix up the two.
