Twitter Blocks Ads by Notorious White Supremacist “Weev”

Some people who use Twitter had a very unpleasant surprise recently, when they saw “promoted tweets” (read: advertisements) appearing in their timeline espousing overt white supremacism. These tweets were placed by a notorious troll named Andrew “weev” Auernheimer — but he’s not just trolling, he apparently really is a straight up white supremacist, with a swastika tattoo and everything.

But today, Auernheimer’s ads have been shut down by Twitter, which is excellent news.

Among the tweets promoted by Auernheimer was one that read: “Whites need to stand up for one another and defend ourselves from violence and discrimination. Our race is dying.” A second promoted tweet read: “White pride, world wide. Do you know the 14 words?” - a reference to the white nationalist credo: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.”

But a further attempt to promote the first tweet a day later led to a rejection from Twitter, which cited a ban on ads dealing with hate content, sensitive topics and violence.

There’s another question that should be asked, though: why does Twitter allow open racists and white supremacists to use their service at all? Yes, they have a First Amendment right to say what they want, but Twitter is a private company and the First Amendment applies only to the government. What does Twitter gain by permitting racists to spew hatred, except a lot of ill will?

By the way, Auernheimer does have at least one fan on Twitter: our stalker pal Chuck C. Johnson, who has retweeted many of Auernheimer’s ugly posts. For example:

Those “promoted tweets” are exactly why I left twitter. I don’t need some shithead getting in my timeline that I have no desire to read. Talk about shoving it down your throat (in your eyeballs maybe). And when I replied to the “promoted tweet” to fuck off, I got some dumb asses wanting to harass me. Fuck them, they “talked” to me first, if they didn’t want to hear me, don’t fucking “talk” to me.

Wow.

House Bill 4105 would prohibit state or local tax money from being spent to “issue, enforce or recognize” a same-sex marriage. It also would ban any government employee in Texas from issuing a same-sex marriage license or recognizing such a marriage legally performed in another state.

State agencies and county officials also would be barred from spending money to enforce a court order requiring gay marriage.

Opponents have questioned the proposed law’s constitutionality and say its passage would allow state-sanctioned discrimination, destroying Texas’ reputation as an open and welcoming site for businesses looking to expand or relocate.

The bill’s Republican author, Rep. Cecil Bell of Magnolia, has said the change is needed to counter a wave of federal court rulings that have redefined the meaning of traditional marriage, leaving Texas among only 13 states where marriage is limited to opposite-sex couples.

“This will make certain our dollars are used the way we as Texans want them used,” Bell said during an April committee hearing on HB 4105.
The bill has 78 Republican co-authors, more than half of the 150 House members.

Other provisions of HB 4105 would bar county clerks from filing a same-sex marriage license and prohibit the state’s vital statistics unit from entering gay marriages into Texas records. County clerks that issue a marriage license to a gay couple would forfeit $30 per license to the state.

I smell a hell of an opportunity for good press here. When this becomes law, put together a donation drive to cover the fees charged to any county clerks willing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in defiance of the state. But they’ll need to make sure that there’s a way to verify that the licenses went to same-sex couples, to avoid scam artists.

A note to guests at the Hilton Chicago Magnificent Mile Suites, shared on Reddit, requested “you not open your windows in your suite during this time, to avoid the annual migration of high-rise flying spiders, a Chicago phenomenon.”

The note said lakeshore high rises, the Willis Tower, and the John Hancock Center have noticed an annual influx of flying spiders spinning miniature masterpieces as high as 95 stories.

These people have not learned that there is a distinction between the sacrament of Holy Matrimony and the civil status of marriage.

Just like there is a difference between a marriage ceremony (be it religious or secular) and wedding celebration (with or without pizza)

If they cannot get that distinction through their pea brains, then they have no chance grasping the notion of non-discrimination.

That was back when Christian fundamentalist fucks like Fischer didn’t try to hide behind Israel’s skirt about their Anti-Semtisim. Not mocking Israel mind you with that but saying that fundies like Fischer use Israel as a skirt against the fact that they are some of the most Anti-Semitic people you’ll ever meet.

They do not give a shit about Israel or the Jewish people, they just need a revived Israel so they can see their blood-God prophecies of Armageddon fulfilled. Truly some sick shit.

What is true is that MLK’s father was a Republican but what they don’t tell you is when the Kennedy brothers arranged MLK’s bail to be paid, he became a supporter of the Democrats and never looked back. The Republicans forfeited any moral authority on civil rights the second they nominated Goldwater and when later Nixon and Reagan adapted the Southern Strategy. They think black Americans are stupid and have forgotten that but they haven’t and they haven’t forgotten that Republican politicians continue to shit on them by claiming they vote Democratic because of “free stuff.”

A party serious about Civil Rights in the 60’s wouldn’t have nominated Goldwater and wouldn’t have embraced Strom Thurmond, the original Dixiecrat into its own ranks. Yes, there were Republicans in Congress even a majority of them that supported the Civil Rights legislation that LBJ signed into law but their actions as a party showed that civil rights wasn’t a priority for them. Not to mention that beloved and whitewashed conservative editor William F. Buckley pushed the insidious lie that Civil Rights was a communist plot. That always needs to be brought up when discussing WFB. He wasn’t the noble conservative he’s retrospectively made out to be. Well Nugent and Parks are both carbon based lifeforms so Ted’s got that going for him but so do 6 billion other people. Really, I find it sad and pathetic that the same people whose ideology and indeed in some cases many of them were accusing people like Rosa Parks of being communists now try to claim her as their own. Do they know that Rosa Parks spent many years working for favorite conservative boogeyman, John Conyers? Do they know that John Lewis an associate of MLK and many others is a preeminent liberal in Congress? The right has no moral authority to claim the civil rights movement. Just because the Republican Party at that time was actually decent on the issue doesn’t give the Republican Party of today, the same one that gutted the VRA for that matter any moral authority on the issue. They only say nice things about MLK and Parks because they’re universal icons in this country. But they don’t understand the Parks and MLK were up against the worst forms of right wing opression in this country and they don’t see those forces as a reflection of their ideology.

Rove warns GOP that they need to have a contingency plan if SCOTUS guts subsidies:

Obama will then accuse conservative justices of overreaching and demand that the GOP Congress immediately extend subsidies to every state. His message will be politically potent, as it will turn the words of Republicans in 2013 back on them: “If you like your plan,” Republicans said, “you should be able to keep your plan.” Hillary Clinton will join in depicting Republicans as heartless brutes who would let people die for lack of health insurance rather than fix Mr. Obama’s law.

Rove’s warning is falling on deaf ears. The GOP Congress would never be able to pass 50 state subsidies.

Rove warns GOP that they need to have a contingency plan if SCOTUS guts subsidies:

Rove’s warning is falling on deaf ears. The GOP Congress would never be able to pass 50 state subsidies.

The GOP promised weeks ago that, by the time the ruling came down, they’d have a proposal ready to go to cushion the blow and give them time to work on an alternative.

We saw a week ago what that proposal is: Just extend the subsidies for two years, well after the presidential election, so they can avoid actually addressing the issue. You can already see the gears grinding in their heads as they tell themselves its yet another foolproof plan: Set 2016 up as another “referendum” on Obamacare, declaring that a vote for Hillary will be a vote for “socialism” and a vote for whoever they nominate will be a vote for “freedom.” Remember how well it worked for them in 2012?

If I was going to dump time in this, it was going to be useful for me. It’s aimed primarily as a portfolio piece to show employers, with the added benefit of hopefully benefiting fellow hobbyists.

Heh. I did a quick look at geology apps. Lots of stuff for maps, identifying minerals, etc. Figured there would be something useful there for stratigraphy; recording GPS coords of site, automatic use of the compass and level functions to measure direction and dip of a strata (if working with sedimentary rocks) by holding the phone level with the strata and hitting a button, etc. etc.

And what report is this genius Representative relying on?

There are two other Sad Puppies book reviews at that site. These are also worth checking out.

Edited to add following quote from the ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ review:

If you have raised your children right as I have done with mine then your best bet is to take a hands-on approach. I read this book to my children, taking care to explain the subtle SJW traps that were on every page. I am pleased to report that they showed no interest in it afterwards.

I think it will be a long time before any of them bring home a book by this joker, who has written numerous SJW propaganda hatchet jobs. The very title of Hop on Pop is a matriarchal assault on male authority. The Sneetches and Other Stories is a fable about the extinction of the white race due to targeted immigration and interbreeding. His books are about the political obsolescence of the straight white male and he is so shameless he doesn’t even bother to hide it.

It’s really irritating, nervous making and unprofessional. You don’t see carpenters constantly grabbing their hammer like it’s a prosthetic dick. More cynical read of the situation:

1. Pam Gellar makes explicit what they’d prefer to be left implicit.
2. By framing criticisms as “you have to respect religion,” they’re setting up a defense for when somebody mocks someone Christian.

The criticism of Pam Gellar I want to see is that she’s assuming a mantle of free speech and status as victim of violence, when she speaks openly and often about how others don’t deserve free speech, and how people that were actually killed—like the kids at Utoya—weren’t “really real” victims deserving of sympathy.

re: #273 The Ghost of a Flea

More cynical read of the situation:

1. Pam Gellar makes explicit what they’d prefer to be left implicit.
2. By framing criticisms as “you have to respect religion,” they’re setting up a defense for when somebody mocks someone Christian.

The criticism of Pam Gellar I want to see is that she’s assuming a mantle of free speech and status as victim of violence, when she speaks openly and often about how others don’t deserve free speech, and how people that were actually killed—like the kids at Utoya—weren’t “really real” victims deserving of sympathy.

Excellent points.

The UKIP, Britain’s Tea Party. Every bit as ignorant, racist, and bigoted as their American counterparts.

BTW, saw this on the BBC site earlier and thought of you even though it’s about a different species of ant: Invasive ants are extreme excavators.

Oh, also this:

I am either going to be successful at killing off the colony or I am creating a pet ant colony.

The jury is still out.

Asked if he could detail what an appraiser’s job entails, Glanz said he doesn’t know.

“I don’t know. I just appoint them,” Glanz said. “That’s all I do. I appoint them, and the only requirement is that you be a citizen of Tulsa County. It is a political patronage.

That’s a sweet little perk, isn’t it? About $50,000 a year as an “appraiser,” with no requirements other than being buddy-buddy with the sheriff.

I’m sure they’re getting expert professional appraisals from these folks, right? Right?

Pope Francis has been made an honorary Harlem Globetrotter. He is the ninth person in the team’s 90-year history to be so honored and his jersey number is 99, which is all Dan Brown needs for the plot of his next gazillion-selling novel.

I want to see His Holiness wear the jersey and play some ball, or he’s just a poser. //
