I don’t think a dollar a day is unreasonable. Just committed it for the cause.

This Jura single malt is outstanding!

(And no, one has nothing to do with the other.)

Glad the fund is doing well! Will kick in what I can on payday — it’s worth a lot more than I can afford, alas.

Also relieved to report that my ex-Texan hubby has made it from Denver to Austin (okay, to his sister’s place outside of Georgetown) in one piece, despite rain, hail, funnel clouds, wingnuts and earthquakes. I didn’t expect the earthquake. Sheesh, what a week to pick for the trip!

Mind you, I’m listening to the thunder rumble outside my window tonight, and they’re tossing around the four-letter S-word for Sunday morning’s forecast. Won’t be the first time it’s snowed on Mother’s Day, but I’ll take that over hail any time. You want some of this, California? Please? Be glad to share — when I find mushrooms in the yard, we’ve had enough rain for awhile.

Now if I can just get the spouse — and the car — home in one piece…

No thanks necessary, my man. You have provided a forum that is unique on the web. I’ve been her 8 1/2 years and it just gets more open and more inclusive.

29 Pawn of the Oppressor  May 7, 2015 11:03:20pm

I had a dream the other night after the Garland shooting that Chucksie was outside of a building I and some other people were in, pointing a toy gun through the windows. We ran outside and chased him off with yelling and threats (like how you’d chase a dog off your lawn). It wasn’t a far-fetched dream because he was actually “in town” and hypothetically I could have run into him somewhere in DFW. Yuck.

I guess it just amazes me that somebody can exist in the media-sphere as, essentially, a completely shameless criminal - with no legitimate paying job, going around breaking laws and harassing people, and generally being an asshole - without having the slightest bit of… I dunno… Decency I guess? A sense of right and wrong? He really does seem to be some kind of low-grade sadist. It’s strange how the immediacy of social media can make a “star” out of that asshole kid everyone hated in high school.

re: #29 Pawn of the Oppressor

Well, there’s “fame” and there’s “infamy” and some people just don’t know the difference.

People don’t know the difference in a lot of things these days. I blame that whole “don’t judge” meme carried to an extreme.

You might not judge a book by its cover, but you certainly can critique the contents.

For those following Britain’s election…

At least Britain’s election wasn’t an oversweeping success for the Tories, even though I’m disappointed that the Scots fell for the SNP line and Sturgeon previously said her win wouldn’t mean independence. Many of the votes won by the SNP more than likely were votes that would have gone to Labour.

At least Cameron doesn’t have a mandate, it’s a narrow majority. The huge individual loss was for Ed Balls of Labour, who was called the “shadow chancellor”, to a female Tory by 422 votes. The biggest losers by far were the Liberal Democrats. UKIP won a seat, by a former Tory turned UKIP, but it appears Nigel Farage may have lost, and promised he would resign as party leader before the election if he lost. Expect a few party resignations today.

This neatly sums up the situation for Scots now:

33 Justanotherhuman  May 8, 2015 2:17:08am

Douglas Alexander, who directed the opposition Labour’s campaign and would have been Britain’s foreign secretary if they had won, was defeated by a 20-year-old student from the Scottish National Party.

And, of course, the “markets” are happy with this Tory win.

re: #35 Nyet

To me, as an outsider, it just looks like the SNPers have cut off their noses to spite their face.

Now, not only do they not get “independence” (which was never a real independence according to their own plans) but now they made sure that the party they exactly don’t want is in power.

It’s no wonder that so many turn their backs on the election booth, for whatever reason—that one vote is becoming ever more meaningless, thanks to Citizens United and a weak FEC.

The vote is just as valuable in the election itself. The questions are:
1. Is the investment of time necessary to research the candidates properly worth it?

2. Does the current system where campaigns appear to need a billion dollars to pay their media and advertisement bills essentially carry with it a quid pro quo where the big contributors get access and influence to directly affect policy and votes of the winning politician?

3. And if a candidate cheats and wins what difference does it make if the FEC fines them (or the party) a few million after the fact?

And for #1 I would actually say that has gotten harder since candidates seem to rarely actually talk policy anymore. They mouth platitudes and their speeches adjust to pander to the different audiences. And the internet is going to tell you different things since the various sites are generally partisan one way or the other.* So you then have to start digging out voting records or rely on party platforms. And the latter can be very nutty and start pushing you towards “team” straight ticket voting. And we know where that leads.

* - The media/information outlets being partisan is not a new thing. In the “old” days it seemed traditional that a city/region had two newspapers and one oriented towards one party and the other towards the other party.

That was my point—Portland Metro is a much smaller population center than the Puget Sound or SF Bay areas. I guess there’s a long (sparse) corridor down through Corvallis that spreads out the area.

I want May weather. Which according to reports is coming back next week. Woot!

This morning I have some roofers climbing around my house replacing some damaged slates. The last two winters with the huge snows managed to crack and drag a couple out of place. A couple also came down completely. Maybe we’ll get a break this winter since the last two were pretty snow covered.

How is that El Nino coming out in the Pacific? If I have it right, I think El Nino’s out west mean milder and dryer winters back east. Plus rain for the Californians.

Ever wonder why Jeb Bush hasn’t announced yet? Ever wonder why campaigns cost so much yet raise so much?

It’s because, as a non-candidate, he can raise unlimited amts of money. The rules change when he announces.

17 Months Before Election Day, One Campaign Aims For $100 Million

npr.org

Our election system is so fucked up it will never recover without a massive reform. Money rules it, and you and I don’t have it. It’s no wonder that so many turn their backs on the election booth, for whatever reason—that one vote is becoming ever more meaningless, thanks to Citizens United and a weak FEC.

Gun control is a case in point. The polling that I’ve read suggests that 70% of Americans want some sort of federal gun control. Instead of voting that in, pols from both parties failed to even renew the modest gun controls that had been in effect. The electoral system will never be reformed because the current one is so easy to game. It’s team vs team and money vs money, sound bites vs policy. Pols pretend to pay attention to the wishes of the electorate for the duration of the election and then they listen to their big donors. No wonder that voter turnout is abysmal.

We’ve had less than 60% o the voting age population actually voting since 1968 (and that wasn’t even 61%). These figures do include convicted felons, because not all of them are eligible to vote in every state. The lowest % of voting occured in 1996, 1924 and 1928; the highest in 1860 and 1876.

presidency.ucsb.edu

The fact is, more people appear to be less interested in politics generally and depend on their own biases, rather than educating themselves. Voting can be hard work when you do your research and most people just depend on the kind of superficial knowledge they have about candidates. In today’s electioneering, though, there is a definite distinction between the 2 main parties, even though many don’t think there is. That’s always been very evident since the 1980s and even more so as the Tea Party mentality has taken over the Republican Party.

How can anyone call this country “progressive” when it’s taken the entirety of our history for a major Black or female candidate to even run, and win? And we’ve already seen what happens when one or the other does win—the division not only is still there between the parties, but efforts to erase any gains are doubled down on and attempts to actually govern are severely restricted.

re: #70 WhatEVs

Anyone know what “Scotland devolution” is?

“You’re on your own, Jack.”

The Smith Agreement:

Conclusions
The Scottish Government is calling for full fiscal autonomy, but the Committee concludes:

Fiscal autonomy would deliver additional powers but would expose Scotland to greater risks.
Under full fiscal autonomy Scotland would not only lose £8 billion in additional funds that are delivered via the Barnett formula and block grant but would replace the security of Barnett with volatile oil revenues which are not within the Scottish Government’s control. The recent collapse in the oil price would have been disastrous for a Scotland with full fiscal autonomy.
The majority of the people of Scotland voted to retain the safety net of the UK’s broad tax base, and the Smith Agreement respects that decision.
Full fiscal autonomy would expose Scotland to increased financial risk and an immediate hole in its budget of £6.5 billion - equivalent to over half of Scotland’s spend on healthcare.
For the first time “the majority of the money spent by the Scottish Parliament will come directly from revenues raised in Scotland”, making it more fiscally accountable.
Significant powers over welfare will be devolved including the hugely important power to increase every each and every benefit by as much as desired.
Scotland will continue to benefit from pooling risk and resources across the wider tax base of the whole of the United Kingdom, protecting it from shocks in Scottish revenues or expenditure.

Oil and gas revenues are not as significant a percentage of Scotland’s economy, as it is in other oil producing countries.

Nevertheless, if Scotland wants full control of their economy and the Scottish Parliament voted for it, they would ultimately be responsible for every expenditure as well as foregoing revenue from the UK. As it is, Scotland wants to have its cake and eat it, too.

See the Smith report, above, which is recommendations that would provide Scotland with a soft landing, at least for the time being.

Those 56 SNP votes won’t prevent the British Parliament from making as many changes as they wish.

re: #154 Aye Pod

Every party is going to eventually talk about immigration and use it like a cudgel to win. Sturgeon is talking about UKIP, a radical anti-immigrant group, not immigration generally, and also about discrimination against immigrants, which, AFAIK, many emigrate from former British colonies, don’t they? And aren’t some Britons also against Eastern Europeans? I don’t know how many immigrants are permitted into the UK every year and if those numbers are a real problem or if it’s simple bigotry (in the case of UKIP, yes, we know it is). It appears that some ordinary white Europeans are as frightened of any kind of immigration as some of those in the US are, esp when they approve of Americans or Canadians doing the same thing.

The world itself is already having to deal with a lot of migration. It’s very tragic that countries (esp former colonies) where mass emigration is happening because of poverty and/or war are not doing, or cannot do, their very best, even with aid, to make life better for their populations so that the tragedies we’re seeing today could be eliminated and people wouldn’t be driven from their homelands. And it doesn’t help when those same countries have brain drains, either, because opportunities are better in countries other than one’s own.

Nationalism is going to be (if it already isn’t) the major roadblock to people being able to move freely from one country to the next. This is why trade and treaties are going to be even more important in this century, to give other countries the means to develop their own resources and industries.

i don’t either. It’s not society’s job to force women to have children. re: #175 FemNaziBitch

It’s a plain English reading that makes sense. IL and some other states enacted constitutional provisions that protect pensions from being reduced. For instance, the state constitution provides that membership in any pension or retirement system of the State is “… an enforceable contractual relationship, the benefits of which shall not be diminished or impaired.” On that basis alone, any attempt to enact a legislative reduction in benefits to those pensions is unconstitutional pursuant to the state constitution.

The only way you can go around this restriction and reduce those pensions is to amend the state constitution and eliminate this provision. In the process, you’d be indicating your preference to ignore the contractual relationship between the state and its employees, and that further ignores that the state politicians have repeatedly plundered the pension fund by shortchanging funding so that they could fund other priorities rather than address structural funding either by reducing services or increasing taxes (or a combination of the two).

I also think it’s interesting to look at what the two parties have done in the past 50 years. I mean I believe Goldwater wasn’t a bigot but he still voted against the CRA 1964 and his party still nominated him. That doesn’t show a party committed to civil rights. That shows a party that felt it could gain the votes and they did given how Goldwater did in the South of angry Southern whites who were pissed that their ancestral party embraced Civil Rights. And it was all downhill from there with Nixon fully adapting a formal Southern Strategy, Reagan opening his campaign talking about states rights where the three Civil Rights Workers were murdered and I doubt even a mention of them, H.W Bush’s Horton ad, the whisper campaigns by W Bush’s allies about McCain’s adopted daughter in 2000, and of course now the crap said about Obama and also the repeated accusations by Republicans that black people vote Democratic because they want “free stuff,” The Republican party has regressed on civil rights. Gerald Ford who would be 102 this July was more progressive on the subject than any of the candidates running this year.

Really Republicans if your party is such a champion of Civil Rights. Show me what they’ve done in my lifetime on the subject. I see a lot of weakening of civil rights by Republicans like opposing not only same sex marriage but civil unions as well. I see that the judges on the Supreme Court who Republican presidential candidates consistently cite as model judges weakening the VRA. It’s nice that they seem to appreciate what MLK and Rosa Parks did but at the same time, I’m deeply skeptical if this batch of Republicans would have actually supported their cause had it happened now. I’d like just one example of what the Republican Party has postively done on Civil Rights since the latter half of the Reagan years. If you’re citing what your party did in the 1860;s, then you’re failing big time.

I don’t disagree. I guess my point is even if Goldwater wasn’t a bigot, the party showed how little it valued Civil Rights by nominating an opponent of the signature civil rights legislation of its day for president that year. Goldwater being a bigot or not really isn’t my point here. My point here is that by nominating him the GOP basically said good bye to nearly a century of embracing Civil Rights and hello to the people who opposed it tooth and nail. I think we agree more than we don’t though. I don’t think Goldwater was actually a bigot since he had and did support civil rights legislation before and after the CRA-64 but he still did vote against it and he still deserved to lose because of that and other things.

Last week, I was subpoenaed to appear at the trial of the woman who hit me. The sheriff who served me called that woman ‘your basic crackhead’. I had mixed feelings about that. (I have not met the woman.) This week she was arrested for making a four year old girl, her granddaughter, sleep outside locked out all night. Feelings are unmixing.

She needs to be locked up and that child placed in a good home.

Yesterday, I inadvertently stumbled across a shit ton of stories about selfish, cruel and just stupid people who abused and killed their own children (drugs were involved in some of the kids’ deaths even) and it left me feeling that there is no hope for some of them except incarceration.

That whole article is insulting and presumptuous.

The sacrifices you make when you have children are things you need to exercise to be a person of value

Their argument seems to be similar to the one that says atheists can’t have morals because they don’t fear retribution.

I chose not to be a parent because I didn’t want that job. A lot. As such I would not have been very good at it and I thus spared any children who may have been born to me had I listened to this crap. The only people who should be parents are those who want to be parents and can raise their children with love and joy.

She owns her own self-destruction. And you could have been killed because of it, and so could those kids. If she hasn’t learned responsibility by her age, there’s little hope she ever will. Maybe she’ll get some help in prison, if she really wants it.

US MILITARY BASES RAISE SECURITY STATUS DUE TO ISIS THREAT

abc11.com

Military bases and installations in the United States have been ordered to raise their force protection condition status to Bravo (FPCON Bravo), due to general concerns about ISIS related threats, but not because of any specific threat or plot.

U.S. Northern Command’s Admiral William Gortney ordered the increase in the force protection condition from FPCON Alpha Plus, which is the standard for U.S. military bases.

The order will result in some visible increases in security, though there will also be other not-so-visible measures that will be taken. It is unclear how long the order to raise the force protection condition will remain in effect.

And there’s no accounting for attraction, either. She sounds young, so hasn’t worked out the kinks of what she really wants yet and seems to be using him for a guide for what she should or shouldn’t do. If she already had really strong opinions about it, she’d not let that attraction divert her from them.

I mean, having kids isn’t quite the same as deciding where to have dinner. It’s a huge life decision, as is when to have them or whether to have them at all.

It’s a decision that is going to be a major, if not primary controlling, factor in your life for the next twenty years. It deserves a lot of thought, discussion, and planning. Plus contingency planning as well.

(I joke that couples wanting to adopt or bear children should first be given a kitten to care for two years, and then a puppy to care for two years, and then can start handling children. And also at that point they will have a Feline Overlord properly in charge with a canine enforcer on hand.)

If you get clear of needing a woman’s body as an incubator you then get a whole lot of changes in societal pressures. There is some SF writing that addresses this. In particular it is an undercurrent in a number of Bujold’s Vorkosigan series novels since the different societies have done different things with having uterine replicator and IVF technology available.

Including one novel focused on a planet inhabited only by men.
